ew campaign finance reports reveal that both sides in the Southbridge Two referendum fight shelled out large sums of money to spread their messages during the signature drive in December.
Now, both sides are questioning each other's ethical behavior in getting those sigantures. Campaign finance reports filed with the City of Scottsdale on Jan. 15 by the Committee for the Preservation of Old Town Scottsdale and Protecting Scottsdale’s Future show that the PACs cumulatively raised over $262,000 through Dec. 31, 2019.

The bulk of that cash was paid to individuals hired by the developer to spread his message – and not work for the opposition. The opposing PAC also spent a significant amount of money to hire paid petition circulators, including the wife of a Scottsdale Councilman who opposed the development.

local lawmaker responded to concerns about fake signatures on arguments in the voter pamphlet issued in last year’s Scottsdale Unified budget override election. Last fall, some Scottsdale residents questioned the identity of five authors whose arguments were in the pamphlets the county sent to eligible voters. On Jan. 9, state Rep. John Kavanagh, RFountain Hills, introduced H.B. 2121, which would require arguments for or against overrides, bonds and other ballot measures
