ith Arizona’s premier air show, Luke Days, canceled for the third year in a row due to challenges with COVID-19 and economic strain, those on and off Luke Air Force Base are left reminiscing about the glory days of prior shows.

“Our airmen, alongside our community and corporate partners, have worked tirelessly over the past several months to plan a tremendous show that would excite and inspire future generations,” says Brig. Gen. Gregory Kreuder, 56th Fighter wing commander.

“We were really looking forward to showcasing airpower to the amazing communities who support Luke and our mission to train the world’s greatest fighter pilots and combat-ready airmen. Unfortunately, due to ongoing supply chain issues, rising costs of products and services, and other related effects of COVID-19, I determined the best course of action was to cancel this year’s show.”

ic displays scheduled.

The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds were set to headline the event, showcasing their elite piloting skills through complex maneuvers that, according to Sites, were always a show-stopper for the crowd. Other aerial acts would have included the U.S. Air Force F-35 demonstration team, U.S. Air Force Wings of Blue parachute

In addition to the acts in the sky, static displays would have included the T-7, F-16s, F-35s and A-10s, according to Sites. There were also heritage aircrafts, too, like the World War II P-47 Thunderbolts and B-25 bombers, as well as unique items such as the Apache helicopters and some tanks. Usually, people are invited to walk through some of the aircrafts and can climb up to take a peek at the cockpit.

Before the event was canceled, Sites says everyone was excited about the event. Command Chief Master Sgt. Daniel Weimer of the 56th Fighter Wing says Luke Days is a great way for the public to get insight into what the Air Force base does and has become a staple in the community.

“Since 1941, we have been a part of and have worked closely with our neighboring communities,” Weimer says. “Luke Days is another opportunity to showcase the awesome airpower your Air Force provides to our great nation and to, above all, say thank you for your support.”

Sites says the air show offers a sense of wonderment and something to aspire to for kids, a bit of nostalgia for veterans and a full day of entertainment for everyone in between. He says there is something there for everyone to enjoy, which is made evident by the tens of thousands of people who attend.

In previous years, more than 250,000 people attended the air show, making it the largest two-day event in the state. Sites says the show is free to the public because leaders at Luke Air Force Base want to give the community a look at what goes on behind the scenes, and its benefit is twofold.

“It’s important for the American taxpayer to see what our military is,” he says. “And then it’s incredibly important for the civilians to have access and encourage them to see what the military is. The air show ends up becoming the largest recruiting tool for our branches of service.”

Kreuder admits no one is happy about having to cancel again, but the decision was made in the best interest of everyone involved. He adds, however, that this is not the end of Luke Days, and the base has plans to continue the event in the future.

“This was a tough decision, as we were all really excited to host what would have been an amazing event and thank those who we are honored to serve,” Kreuder says. “We are normally on a two-year cycle and our next scheduled show is in 2024; however, we will explore opportunities to host one earlier, if possible.”

F

ighter Country Foundation President and Executive Director Ron Sites didn’t start out in the military. In fact, he was never really involved at all until he started volunteering at Luke Air Force Base around 2007. Once he started, though, Sites fell in love with the community and has been dedicated to helping airmen and their families.

“We are all incredibly fortunate to be a part of this mission, and we’re continuously humbled and honored to get to do this, because it allows us to stay close to a culture that not a lot of people get to be close to,” Sites says.

According to Sites, he has been on several career paths. From the golf industry to financial services, Sites was unknowingly making moves to bring him to Luke Air Force Base.

“I ended up working for Southwest Valley Family YMCA, to eventually be the executive director of that flagship branch,” Sites explains. “While I was at that branch, we established a military outreach program, which included the 56th Fighter Wing. That’s when I got introduced to Luke Air Force Base and the honorary commander program. Once I got involved, the Kool-Aid was stuck in my veins. I got hired by Fighter Country Foundation, and the rest is history. We’ve been doing this for 11 years in September.”

Sites became the president and executive director of the foundation in 2010. Ironically, he had previously passed up the chance to join the Air Force about 18 years prior. He says his older sister was in the Air Force and retired as a command chief, but, until joining the Fighter Country Foundation, he never really connected with her in that area.

The Fighter Country Foundation is a nonprofit organization that aims to support the men, women, families and mission of Luke Air Force Base.

It fulfills that mission through programs and services that are geared toward morale and well-being, culture, tradition and mission sustainability.

“While there are a lot of other military support organizations across the country, there are none that do what we do and at the capacity that we do it,” Sites says about the foundation. “We’re very unique.”

The foundation’s first program was established 13 years ago and has since grown to offer almost 20 programs. Sites says their programs have successful outcomes, which in turn garners more support for the organization. It got so much support, in fact, that it stepped up in a way few other organizations can.

“We had to establish new ways to invest those resources to support the base. So, we started renovating facilities on an active-duty military installation. That’s what doesn’t really take place anywhere else across the country at the level we’re doing it,” Sites says. “We renovated the fire station and the flight kitchen. We added a security forces guard mount room. So,

what started as programs and services geared toward the military members and families has grown to also include renovating facilities on the base.”

He adds the organization has grown to do a lot more than just “put up our pompoms and cheer for Luke Air Force Base” and has taken action to do more to support the military members and their families. That’s another way the Fighter Country Foundation is different from some other military support programs — Sites says they are there for the family members just as much as the airmen. Several of the programs are specifically for the kids or spouses on base.

There’s the Blazer Box Care Package Program, where Blue Blazer Squadron members will put together care packages for airmen who are deployed downrange, and the Back to School Bash, an event where the Fighter Country Foundation will pack 500 backpacks for children at Luke and military members will pack another 5,000 backpacks for children in the community. Then there is also Operation Santa, which provides a shopping spree for 40 deployed children around the holidays. The Dorm Dweller Holiday Party provides a positive distraction during the holiday season, when airmen may be away from home.

Looking to the future, Sites says the foundation will continue to grow and already has new projects underway. He says while they finished phase one of the facility renovation project, there is more to come. One of their biggest priorities now is creating an Honor Guard training facility for the Honor Guard members at Luke Air Force Base.

“In addition to that, some other programs would be the renovation of the Luke Chapel

kitchen, where they serve 24,000 meals a day.

We’re working on a child development center room addition project, so we can take some of these kids off of a waitlist and get them into some new licensed classrooms and the families don’t have to take their children off base to a more expensive, further-away location,” Sites says.

“We’re also working on trying to help support a splash pad project and a dog park project on the base, so we’re working side by side and collaborating with the Luke leadership to try and be a part of that. Then, most importantly, we’re always working on sustaining the programs that we’ve established over the years.”

Sites says everything the Fighter Country Foundation has accomplished has been with military personnel and leaders that transition every two years. He says every time the leadership switches over, the organization kind of has to press pause to develop those new relationships, explain what the Fighter Country Foundation is, what it does and why it does it.

After really getting to know one another, they sit down to establish new programs based on the current needs.

The organization must work in short time

frames, but Sites says the way it works allows them to accomplish things that no one else accomplishes in the country, which is “pretty awesome.” He says part of the accomplishments come from having an exceptional team, and the organization is fortunate to have such amazing staff members.

Sites loves what he does and says it is an extremely rewarding position — and it works.

Fighter Country Foundation receives positive feedback from military leaders, which Sites says reflects the views of the airmen and their families.

“The consistent feedback we get from the leaders across the Air Force is that there is not another organization in the country that does what we do. And the airmen, the spouses and the children support that feedback,” Sites says.

“I can’t tell you how amazing it feels to read testimonials and outcome reports from a resiliency retreat or to hear the response from the airman and the family members. And that response also coincides with the feedback from the leadership about how amazing the event was and the purpose it provided. So, again, we’re very fortunate to get to do what we do, and the military members greatly appreciate it.”

Veteran Maj. Jim Geiser wants to make a statement

.S. Marine Maj. Jim Geiser calls the Scottsdale Memorial for the Fallen a labor of love.

He is taking the steps toward creating the memorial by combining his love of genealogy, his respect for his former occupation and the honor of fallen military members.

Once $310,000 is raised, a seven-sided granite stone will list 66 Scottsdale residents who died while on active duty. The emblems of the five branches of service and the city of Scottsdale logo will adorn it.

“We try to set something as an example for moms and dads and aunts and uncles to take

their kids and show them these are the individuals who gave their lives so we could have the freedoms we have today. We don’t want that to get lost,” Geiser says.

“It’s just something we think needs to be done. It would be my hope that every other city in the state of Arizona would have a monument like this for their fallen, a by-name monument.”

Set to be placed on the northeast side of Scottsdale City Hall, the memorial is nearly a decade in the making.

In 2014, a group of Scottsdale citizens led by Geiser formed the City of Scottsdale Memorial Action Committee with the hopes of establishing the memorial, but the fundraising process took longer than the committee expected.

“We started this process … it’ll be eight years coming up now, I think, in April or May, and all along we started trying to raise funds,” Geiser says.

“We thought when raising funds that the city of Scottsdale residents would run forward with

handfuls of money to help us. We missed that by about 100%, and we started pursuing other avenues of fundraising.”

While total costs are hard to predict, Geiser says the group has already raised about $231,000 toward its $310,000 goal.

Geiser says many, including the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community, have come forward with donations.

The research behind the memorial took some time. Geiser painstakingly identified the fallen military with ties to Scottsdale.

“We want it to be accurate,” he says. “I don’t want to miss anybody. For example, we went through two world wars before Scottsdale had any boundaries. We had three individuals who died during World War I — two from the Pima community and one from the community here.

“I eventually came up with 66 names, three of whom I knew personally, 17 are from the SEE MEMORIAL PAGE 25

The honored have received a Distinguished Service Cross, a Silver Star, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, 11 Bronze Stars, five Air Medals and two POW Medals.

Arizona’s Official State Historian Marshall Trimble, a committee board member, says the research project relied heavily on family members of those who served.

Trimble came on board after Geiser contacted him about his uncle Jack, an Army sergeant who served in New Guinea.

He said most helpful were “the ones who had sons or daughter in the military, and if they knew anything, we really had to rely on the public to help us out on this.”

“The place is so large now, people don’t know everybody around in town like they used to, and so I have to say we have to credit a lot of the people that knew somebody who knew somebody who knew somebody and so forth,” Trimble tells the Scottsdale Progress, the sister

publication to Sound of Freedom.

One of the most helpful resources were old high school yearbooks and the FindaGrave website.

“Back in the early days when my uncle went to school at Scottsdale High, there was only one high school, so it was pretty easy to track that,” Trimble says. “Now we’ve got five or six or seven high schools here in Scottsdale, and that’s a lot of names and we don’t know everybody like we used to, and so we had to do a lot of searching and just get help from the community with what we were trying to do.”

Longtime advocate Geiser could be called an advocate for the fallen. After he was asked to be a part of the ASU veterans’ chapter of the alumni association, Geiser decided to create a memorial for the school.

“They told me at ASU they read the names of all the veterans on Veterans Day,” he says. “I do genealogic research as a hobby, and I wanted to see their list. Nobody knew who had the list. It took me almost a year to find it.”

After extensive research, Geiser worked with consultants to create a wall-mounted me-

morial next to the Pat Tillman Center. Again, first, he needed to raise money.

“I wrote a letter to Dr. Crow asking for help,” Geiser says. “Then $30,000 appeared and we built the memorial. It was dedicated. We’ve added three names now since we dedicated it.”

He’s disappointed that most students just pass by it and “don’t appreciate it.”

“It’s there for them to pause and reflect,” he says. “There’s a bench there. Pat Tillman’s name is on there. Two of my friends’ names are on there. Through an organization called FindaGrave, I did the best I could to document those individuals’ stories. Some are pretty sad. One of them crashed his airplane on McDowell Road and 53rd Street during a training exercise.”

Geiser hopes the memorial becomes as important to the Scottsdale community as to relatives of those it honors.

One Tough Little Egg Airbase Arizona Flying Museum shows off Cayuse

T

he OH6A Cayuse helicopter may not be the biggest airship on the Airbase Arizona Flying Museum floor.

But the Cayuse, produced by Hughes Tool Company division of Hughes Aircraft, casts a big shadow over the history of helicopters setting speed, climb, safety and service records.

Designed to be a light observation helicopter, Cayuse crews took over the perilous task of locating enemy ground positions from earlier fixed-wing aircraft in the Vietnam War.

Commemorative Air Force Col. and retired United States Army Col. Dave Sale, who served two tours in Vietnam, says Cayuse crews pinpointed enemy positions by dropping smoke grenades and providing directional assistance to attack helicopters such as Huey and Cobra gunships.

Sale says this required Cayuse crew members to expose themselves to small arms and anti-aircraft fire from the enemy. On many occasions, he says, the gunship crews located the enemy positions by sighting the wreckage of a downed Cayuse.

These tough little choppers could also be deadly armed with 7.62 mm Mini Guns, grenade launchers, rockets and anti-tank guided missiles.

Despite their dangerous task the whisper quiet and tough little birds amassed an admirable safety record in part because the egg-shaped cabin separated from the tail boom on impact greatly protecting crew members. And it gave the Cayuse the nick-

name of the flying egg.

The Cayuse on our floor served three years in Vietnam and was shot down six times. It survived to find its way back to the United States, where it became part of the prestigious U.S. Army Silver Eagles Precision Demonstration Team and ended its active-duty career in the Air National Guard. It is on loan to Airbase Arizona from the Arizona Army Aviation Heritage Foundation.

The Cayuse sits beside a Huey gunship in our museum, soon to be joined by a Cobra helicopter as part of our Vietnam War era collection, which includes an F-4 Phantom.

Airbase Arizona Flying Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday weekly with about 20 planes on display at any given time. The museum also offers rides on six of its planes, including its iconic B-17 Bomber. Schedules and flight information are available on the website at azcaf.org.

T

he ability to respond to a threat at any time, from anywhere in the world, is a cornerstone of U.S. air dominance. Student-pilots from the 63rd Fighter Squadron recently completed a mission designed to demonstrate this ability, and to push the boundaries of F-35A Lightning II pilot training.

The mission marked a shift in how 63rd FS pilots are trained, and confirmed the U.S. Air Force’s ability to quickly compose force pack-

ages from any operational environment, no matter how austere.

Planners designed the mission to test how students perform during full-spectrum, complex mission execution, says Lt. Col. Jason Curtis, 63rd Fighter Squadron commander.

“The goal of the mission was to survive in a contested environment and gain access to a forward armament refueling point,” he says.

A forward armament refueling point, or FARP, is a strategic location at which aircraft can quickly refuel, re-arm and return to combat with minimal infrastructure or manpower requirements.

“What makes this mission unique is the challenge of integrating both high-altitude

and low-altitude tactics to destroy and survive advanced air threats and surface to air threats,” Curtis says.

During the planning process, Curtis, along with 56th Fighter Wing leadership, leveraged information and expertise from Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center (AFOTEC) Detachment 6 based at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.

According to Lt. Col. Joe Goldsworthy, 56th Fighter Wing chief of safety, the information offered by Air Force Operational Test & Evaluation Center engineers “enabled us to enhance our training level by providing a precedent for dynamic off-station events typically not achievable in the local training areas on a normal day-to-day basis.”

“Typical student training usually takes place in an operating area near base,” Curtis says. “(Because of this,) students get very familiar with the airspace, threat locations and fight directions, which degrades the dynamics of the training potential.”

Taking those students out of a typical training environment and placing them into an unknown airspace “exposes them to problems they haven’t seen before and forces them to think critically rather than apply a predetermined solution,” Curtis says.

As a result, pilots used the F-35’s embedded training (ET) system, which allowed them to fight against simulated threats without needing physical threat emitters.

“Embedded training lets us exit our usual training environment, decouple from physical threat assets, and conduct missions without sacrificing fidelity,” Curtis says.

Embedded training also affords F-35 pilots the ability to replicate

any current or emerging threat, and allows them to build tactics to overcome those threats.

The larger strategic impact of this mission was not forgotten among 63rd Fighter Squadron and 56th Fighter Wing leadership.

“This mission shows that the F-35 is strategically capable of fighting its way through heavily contested airspace in a challenging and dynamic environment, rearming, refueling and proceeding even further without the need for support from more vulnerable aircraft like airborne tankers or (command and control) assets,” Goldsworthy says.

Not only can they accomplish this task, Javorsek adds, “but we can do so successfully with inexperienced pilots. No other pilot could perform at this level without much more extensive training. It is great to see the 63rd (Fighter Squadron) leading as we transition from training fingers to training brains.”

This mission also demonstrates “the innovation taking place in our training squadrons will let us pursue adaptive basing and execute Lilly Pad Operations when responding to adversaries,” Curtis says.

Lilly Pad Operations refers to the idea of aircraft “hopping” from one location to another along a strategic route.

“Forward armament refueling points play a critical role in support of Lilly Pad Operations and allow our F-35 fleet to operate abroad with minimal manpower, logistics or infrastructure requirements,” Curtis adds.

Due to the F-35’s multirole capabilities in all warfare domains, it serves as a node in a network of domain-agnostic assets, according to Curtis. Domain-agnostic warfare refers to the ability to create combat effects from any warfighting domain, rather than the traditional methods that tend to focus on platforms.

“As our adversaries continue to become more advanced, we have to change the way we test and train. By starting with what effect needs to

After completing the mission, it was clear to 63rd Fighter Squadron and 56th Fighter Wing leadership that the mission was beneficial to student F-35 pilots.

“This high-end training mission shows not only what our students can do but also the capabilities of our incredible support from ground personnel, mission-planning experts, and highlights our interoperability as a lethal team,” Goldsworthy says. “I am consistently in awe of what my Air Force is capable of and truly proud and humbled to be part of a mission like this.”

GETTING RECOGNITION

etired Army Sgt. Maj. Anna “Lea” Seago says after serving the country, many veterans look inward, turning their efforts to their own communities.

But despite the good many do, it can be a thankless job, often without veterans getting the recognition they deserve.

“There are a lot of people doing things and they’re doing it in good faith and happiness, but yet they aren’t ever given an opportunity to be awarded for their service,” says Seago, chair of Unified Arizona Veterans.

The Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame (AVHOF) looks to correct that by honoring those who have gone above and beyond as members of their communities.

BY CONNOR DZIAWURA Sound of Freedom Staff Writer Managed by Unified Arizona Veterans, a nonprofit consortium of veterans service organizations, the AVHOF is accepting nominations for its Class of 2022 through March 31.

According to the official Criteria and Nomination Form, the AVHOF “seeks to recognize Arizonans, living and deceased, who have worn the uniform of our Nation’s Armed Forces and have made significant

contributions to their community, state, or nation outside their military service.”

This can be by way of “veterans’ advocacy or volunteerism, professional, political, or other civic contributions of a clearly outstanding nature,” the form continues.

“They gave back when they were in the military, and they’re turned in that way now,” elaborates Seago, who was inducted to the AVHOF’s Class of 2013 and is a member of the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame Society. “They don’t ever give up helping people. It’s a lifestyle, so to speak.”

“A lot of them aren’t ever honored,” Seago continues. “It’s like when we had that real tragic summer; we just had such terrible heat. Some of these people, even handicapped veterans, went out and took water to people. It’s just over and above what you would think someone would do.”

Nominees must be of good moral character and have no felony convictions, the Criteria and Nomination Form states.

They must also have been born in or entered military service from Arizona or at some point been a permanent resident of Arizona for a minimum of five consecutive years.

An honorable discharge or retirement certificate verified by a U.S. military service document is required, as are military and civilian photographs.

A selection committee will review nomination packets, and a background check will be conducted. Selectees are forwarded to the governor for approval.

The Class of 2022 will be honored at the annual induction ceremony luncheon.

“All of these people gather, they’re onstage, we have a luncheon, we honor each one,” Seago describes. “The secretary of state, and Col. (Wanda) Wright at the ADVS (Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services), they present the medallions and the plaques to each one; they each have their photograph made; and they’re honored that way. It’s a very wonderful event.”

Seago says there’s “nothing like it.”

High school students join effort to save home

L

ocal high school students learning construction at West-MEC technical school in Glendale are helping a veteran’s widow keep her home.

On February 17, WestMEC students in the General Construction Technology class returned for the second time in a month to work on the Glendale

home of LaGean Levar, whose husband Thomas, a U.S. Navy veteran, died last year.

After Thomas died, the city became aware of the dangerous state of disrepair inside the home. The structure was headed for condemnation, so city officials alerted retired Glendale Police Sgt. Jeff Turney.

An Air Force veteran, Turney has a long record of helping local vets. In 2019 he

made national news by helping a World War II veteran drive from Glendale to Florida to reunite with family. Turney has also chaired the Glendale Chamber’s Military & Veterans Affairs Committee.

When Turney heard about LaGean’s situation, he contacted Angels on Patrol and Operation Enduring Gratitude, which went to work organizing volunteers and donated building materials for the renovation. LaGean is staying with her next-door neighbors while the volunteers bring her home up to code and make it comfortable.

Operation Enduring Gratitude was founded by West-MEC construction instructor and Army veteran Charlie Ellis in 2014. Its mission is to perform home repairs and upgrades for veterans in need.

Ellis said LaGean’s house is the ninth home the group has helped renovate. It has also performed numerous smaller projects, including the installation of about 80 wheelchair ramps for veterans.

F E AT U R E nity to give his construction students real-world experience and help someone in need at the same time.

The combination of the students working alongside building professionals using donated materials “is like a three-legged stool. It’s borderline perfect,” Ellis says.

The high school students are contributing valuable labor, gaining experience and also making professional connections with the builders who are contributing their time to the project, Ellis says.

“Hopefully we get jobs out of this for our students,” he says.

Ellis added that having the students working at the site helps him recruit professionals to donate their time, since companies are on the lookout for new hires with construction workers in high demand.

West-MEC construction student Chris Lopez, of Peoria, was working on a plumbing project inside the home.

“It feels nice,” he says. “It’s rewarding to feel like you’re helping. It gives you the opportunity to work in your community.”

Turney said that having the construction students step up and be involved has en-

“We had one young lady who didn’t know anything about plumbing,” he says, “and now she’s our plumber.”

Turney said the aim is to have one professional working with each group of volunteers on a particular project inside the home.

One of the contractors working with Lopez and the other West-MEC students was Marcus White, owner of Veteran Advisors, who was restructuring the walls of the home.

White, an 18-year Navy veteran, says his business is veteran focused, hiring veterans and offering discounted work to veterans, in addition to donating time to projects like the home renovation.

White says he was motivated to help after seeing a need for veteran services when he retired from the military. He says he is particularly passionate about helping homeless veterans, because he knows people who fell into homeless after their service and “died on the streets.”

As a contractor, his skills can help keep veterans in their homes by helping on projects such as making houses ADA rated for

disabled vets.

“I do this because I enjoy helping my community,” he says. “There wasn’t that structure and set up (for veterans) when I got out.”

Turney and Ellis says Operation Enduring Gratitude and current home renovation pulled together a lot of different people from the community, including many businesses that have donated supplies and numerous trades, from tree trimmers to electricians, donating their time.

As the West-MEC students were getting ready to enjoy hard-earned pizza after the day’s work, Jason, a technician from America’s Pride Air, which donated an air conditioner, arrived to check on some previous installation work.

“It just feels good,” he says. “It feels great to help someone out.”

Turney said that with the help of its partners, Operation Enduring Gratitude has made a “night and day” difference in the home.

“This is going to be her forever home,” he says. “We want her to have a good solid home.”

Help is Available AARP aiding veterans, military spouses with job search

A

ARP has launched a new, free digital platform bringing information and resources to help Arizona’s 522,382 veterans and military spouses compete in today’s job market.

The AARP Veterans and Military Spouses Job Center launched nationwide earlier this year and has resources like the veterans career advantage course, which focuses on career planning and skills development; a job board with a “veterans wanted” search filter; a resume advisor and others.

“I’m pleased that we can offer these free resources to our military veterans,” says Troy Broussard, senior adviser in the AARP Office of Community Engagement and Desert Storm veteran. “They served our country, and you don’t serve alone when you serve — you serve with your spouse and your family, so we want to make sure that we take care of that family and are helping them.”

Broussard says service members and their spouses face unique challenges when facing the job market. Reports from the U.S. Bureau of Labor show veteran unemployment has decreased over the past year, but Broussard says underemployment continues to hold many veterans and their spouses back.

“From a report back in 2020 from the Blue Star Families, we found that two-thirds of employed active-duty spouses reported they were underemployed in some way, indicating that their current employment does not match their education desires or experience,” Broussard says.

“So, that was our call to action to bring this job center online. It’s a one-stop hub where veteran and military spouses can go to get these

free resources.”

Broussard says one of the challenges faced by veterans returning to the workforce is a lack of prior job experience, as it is difficult to translate a military background into experience for the civilian job market. The AARP job center’s resume tool helps veterans find the right wording for military jargon and matches their skill set to possible civilian jobs.

In addition, Broussard says AARP works with companies and employers specifically looking for veteran employees, and there are a wide range of opportunities available on the center’s job board.

“There are companies in technology, companies focused on the service delivery industry, some opportunities in sales, across the entire gamut. There are available jobs that can fit any career,” he says. “The key thing for us is that this job board filters what veterans want, so you initially have an upper hand.”

Another struggle comes from moving every two to three years, which means a nearly constant cycle of applying, getting references, updating resumes, interviewing or sometimes just not staying anywhere long enough to move up the ladder. Broussard says this is why the job center is also an important resource for veteran and active-duty spouses.

Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Len Kirschner was on active duty for 22 years and had 14 assignments. His wife, Peggy, was formerly a high school guidance counselor but had to continually jump through hoops and was not able to be hired as one for years because of all the moving around they did.

“She had her teaching license in California.

Then we went to Colorado and she got her license there,” Kirschner says about his wife.

“Then we went to Texas and she had to get a Texas license, so she had to take some classes.

Then, she tried to get a job as a guidance counselor and failed again. She ended up teaching fifth grade, but it wasn’t exactly what she wanted to do.”

He says her experiences aren’t dissimilar to other military spouses who have to find a new job after relocating. Broussard points out that, in addition to the hassle of having to keep finding jobs, it doesn’t look very good on a resume to not stay in a position for more than a few years. He says the AARP job center has resources to help with that, too, and Kirschner says he wished something like that would have been available to his wife at the time.

“Any type of help where you would have some information about how to approach these kinds of jobs would have been helpful,” Kirschner says.

Out of AARP’s nearly 38 million members, Broussard says more than 5 million are military or veteran families. He adds that AARP is excited to provide this service after the service military members and their families did for the country.

“We want to attack this underemployment, and we want to make sure that those who serve our country and those that are in the family of those supporting our country are employed to where they should be and that they have the skills to make sure they can move forward to their next rewarding career,” Broussard says.

Smooth Transition Community colleges ease the transition to civilian life

M

aking the move from active duty to civilian life can be challenging.

Glendale Community College focuses on helping military personal get the education and training they need for a smooth transition.

Recently discharged and retired military service personnel as well as their dependents often need to reassess how their skills will translate into the civilian workforce. Often, they find that they need get additional training and education to meet the needs of the workplace and prepare themselves for a secure future. The Veterans Services Center at Glendale Community College is standing by to help fulfill that mission.

There are a number of questions that immediately come to mind as you map out your academic plans. Items such as what will it be like adjusting to college life, what should you study, and what type of school is the best fit for you?

There are several factors to consider when determining what to study. Choose from a variety of subjects, including business, computer technology, health services, auto technology and education.

The second thing is researching job trends. At Glendale Community College, the Veteran Services Center academic advisement team and career services team can assist with academic and career plans.

Determining the best type of school to attend can depend largely on your chosen field of study.

Former Luke Days

L

uke Days, Arizona’s premier air show and a community tradition, has been canceled for the third year in a row. This year, hopes of a return on March 19 and March 20 were high, but the 56th Fighter Wing command team ultimately made the decision to cancel the event in mid-February.

The show, usually held every two years, is a mix of military and civilian aircraft that provide demonstrations. There are dozens of aerial acts, ground acts and static displays. In previous years, the air show has seen hundreds of thousands of people attend. Here’s a look back at some of the highlights of Luke Days throughout the years.
