Local artist’s work garners international honors

One year ago, Mustang Library became home to 20 small, bronze sculptures of finches reading pages from published books. The public arts project was installed around the library and the adjacent Mustang Transit Center near the roundabout on 90th Street. Since then, “Birdie Umwelt,” created by local artist Mary Lucking, has not only been admired by library-goers and Scottsdale residents, it also won Merit Honors in the Public Spaces category at the eighth annual international CODAawards: Collaboration of Design + Art. “Scottsdale Public Art is honored to be recognized by the CODAawards for ‘Birdie Umwelt,’ public art created by Arizona artist Mary Lucking with fabrication from Bollinger Atelier and E2 Innovations,” said Kim Boganey, director of Scottsdale Public Art, in a prepared statement. The CODAawards celebrate projects that successfully integrate commissioned art into interior, architectural or public spaces. “Birdie Umwelt” evolved out of a partnership with Scottsdale’s Transportation Department. “It was created as way to quietly herald the importance of literacy for those using mass transit near the Mustang Library area,” Boganey said. Part of the Scottsdale Public Art Permanent Collection, “Birdie Umwelt” includes a stylized birdhouse sculpture inspired by the library’s architecture. In addition to the aforementioned 20 finch sculptures, “Birdie Umwelt” also includes a series of bird and feature images sandblasted into walking paths along the greenbelt.

“‘Umwelt’ is a German word for ‘environment’: ‘Um’ is what surrounds us, and ‘welt’ is our world. So, it really is the world that surrounds us. And I think that’s a wonderful part of this extraordinary piece,” Scottsdale Arts President and CEO Gerd Wuestemann said at the project’s opening and dedication last May. “Birdie Umwelt” – which was part of the city’s Mustang Transit Center capital improvement project that included new transit amenities, pedestrian and bicycle improvements, a new signal and a roundabout – took six years to complete.
The project began in 2013 with a national call for artists and artists, and once Lucking was chosen, the first 10 bird sculptures, the birdhouse and the sandblasting were completed November 2017. The art was so well received that the installation was commissioned by Scottsdale Public Art to become part of the city’s Fine Art Collection. The city expanded the project in 2018 to include 10 additional books and birds, all of which were added last spring.
“Public art sometimes lives at a large scale, visible from afar, like the highway art or the piece up at the SOHO development. And sometimes public art can be small and poetic, something that you have to discover when you spend a little time. I think this is one of those pieces that inspires poetry, that makes us think a little bit more about life and how we relate to our environment,” Wuestemann said. Lucking, who specializes in projects that include art incorporated into urban and rural walking and biking trails, public transit stations, college campuses and neighborhood parks, was inspired by the birds she frequently spotted nesting around the library. She said she wondered what books

in the Mustang Library the birds might find the most compelling. Thus, Lucking’s concept became: What would birds read? “I come to every project with an open mind, working with the community and design team to create a piece that responds to the specific qualities of the space,” Lucking said in her artist statement. “My aim is to delight, to intrigue and to invite people to look more deeply at what is already there.” seeBIRDIE page 30

Magician and TV star Michael Carbonaro has been trying for “months and months and months” to host a drive-in gig. When WestWorld and R Entertainment came knocking, he jumped at the chance. The host of truTV’s “The Carbonaro Effect” will bring his show to WestWorld Polo Fields at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. Carbonaro’s show will feature his signature blend of bizarre antics, audience interaction, hilarious video clips and mind-blowing magic. “I had the drive-in idea right away,” he said. “When the world shut down and live performances shut down, I equated that to the end of vaudeville for entertainers. “I thought, ‘It’s over.’ That goes for everybody—from the hot dog vendors, the ticket takers. It was just devastating. My husband said the drive-ins were still open. We went and watched ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ in April and I thought, ‘Why am I not doing my show here?’ We were all safe, in our cars. We were together. We were all enjoying the movie together and it was refreshing.” After all, the history of magicians and drive-in theaters run deep. “Back in the 1950s, during horror screenings, magicians would do horror magic shows on top of the refreshment stands,” Carbonaro said. “We looked around and WestWorld in Scottsdale had their stuff together. They had a beautiful stage. We were like, ‘Let’s do two of them. in person at the venue. It’s not a video performance. “We just stuck a big yellow sign that said, ‘Live in person’ on the sign. A lot of people still asked if I was going to be there. Yes, I’ll be there sweating it out there with you.”
A performing magician since his youth, Carbonaro went on to study experimental theater at New York University with the aspirations of entertaining audiences through a variety of theatrical mediums, including hidden-camera magic, which he later showcased frequently on, “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” Following Carbonaro’s frequent late-night appearances, he was presented with the opportunity to launch his own television series which would become, “The Carbonaro Effect.” In addition to his success on television and many live performances, Carbonaro’s extensive list of accolades insense of humor,” said past Scottsdale Public Art Board Chair Chris Irish, who also attended the dedication event. He was also inaugural recipient of the, “Copperfield Prize,” which recognizes an individual for elevating the art of magic. Like everyone else, Carbonaro has found the pandemic to be a rollercoaster ride. But parts of it have been enlightening. He spent six years straight working on his television show and didn’t realize he was looking for an escape. “I wanted to be able to sit and star at a wall for a few days in a row with my own mind and thoughts,” he said. “I wanted to get connected to what excited me, what I’m curious about. I wanted a different way of being creatives versus the demand of putting stuff out really quickly. For now, “The Carbonaro Effect” is on hold. “I’m working on a number of other magic projects for television,” he said.
“I want to do a TV special that is magic at the drive in. I was looking to do a live version of our theater tour right before things shut down. “Even if it wasn’t a pandemic necessity, there’s something sexy about a live show at the drive in. We’re putting together a new wave of music for televisions that’ll be different. It’s a diversion from ‘The Carbonaro Effect,’ but all that’s moving slowly. We have some exciting ideas on the table.”

30 locals on Restaurant Week lineup

With the arrival of September comes one of the more popular culinary events of the year, Arizona Restaurant Week: Dine In or Take Out (ARW) taking place Sept. 18 through 27.
A favorite among foodies, ARW gives Arizonans 10 days to explore some of the state’s best restaurants, all of which offer three-course prix-fixe menus for a steal: just $33 or $44 per person.
Some restaurants also offer wine pairings and upgraded menu items at an additional cost.
Many Scottsdale restaurants are on the lineup, from Blanco Tacos + Tequila and Kona Grill to Olive & Ivy and Zinc Bistro.
Of the just-over 100 participating restaurants statewide, more than 30 are in Scottsdale, including Blanco Tacos + Tequila, PHX Beer Co., and ZuZu at Hotel Valley Ho, among many others.
House Brasserie is a newbie to ARW; the refined New American restaurant located on Main Street downtown joined in the spring, as a way to introduce their establishment to a new audition, House Brasserie owner and manager Joe Ieraci said.
“[And] to be knitted into the community,” he added.
“We feel not only gratitude but also great pride in the fact that the local dining community has showed up again and again in support of our industry since closures and limited re-opening mandates,” Arizona Restaurant Association President and CEO Steve Chucri said.
“We are thrilled to see that dining out — whether that means in-restaurant or getting take-out — is still such an important part of people’s lives.”
