Looking Up

I

t seems everybody has their own impression of where the Scottsdale Airpark begins and ends. This magazine draws the “Greater” boundaries at Pinnacle Peak and Doubletree roads and 64th and 110th streets, but there’s another definition.

Tying this community together is the shared air space above—the wild blue populated by a host of aircraft heading to and from Scottsdale Airport. Even if you’ve never set foot in the facility, the spirit of aviation permeates the Airpark, which has burgeoned around its namesake airport since the city acquired it in 1966.

After five years of working in the Airpark, I never tire of the sight of helicopters, private jets and studentpiloted Cessnas overhead, the quick roar of chartered business jets ferrying dealmakers, and visits to the unique hangar/office spaces peppering our airport neighborhoods.

Now that fall and the holiday season have arrived, many hangars are doubling as venues for fundraisers and networking parties— and hanging out in a hangar is just plain cool. If you haven’t taken the opportunity yet to attend a Scottsdale hangar event, we highly recommend it. Just last month, Fox & Fin invited readers to its November mixer in the group’s hangar space behind the offices (that’s me, checking out one of the aircraft on display).

Make it a point this December to get to know a little bit more about the business and pleasures of our area’s aeronautical heritage.

Orion Health, a healthcare software company with clients in more than 30 countries, has opened a three-building campus in the Airpark in close proximity to Scottsdale’s “Cure Corridor.” The company plans to hire 100 within the next year and an additional 300 to 400 over the following three years. The average salary of the Orion jobs will be around $88,000 annually. The Orion Health "Center of Excellence" will serve as the company’s North American research and solution center, supporting “big data analytics technology development.” A team of Orion Health software engineers, architects, SaaS engineers, operators, customer support and professional services staff will work at the Scottsdale office along with several of Orion Health’s senior executives.

An official ribbon cutting and open house for the facility at 7350 E. Evan Road is slated for January/February, but hiring is ramping up now.

Fate Brewing untaps plans for a second locale

Along with celebrating its second anniversary last month, Fate Brewing Co. announced plans to open a second location in south Scottsdale. The intimate “Fate North” space on Shea Boulevard just east of Scottsdale Road will continue to focus on “funky small-batch beers,” while the new locale, at 1312 N. Scottsdale Road, will feature 10,000 square feet, a larger kitchen, beer garden, cellar and the capacity to brew 2,800 barrels annually, with room to grow.

Transcend Security Solutions calls Kierland home

Transcend Security Solutions opened its doors for business on Aug. 1, providing security guards, mobile security patrols and virtual security (camera systems and monitoring) to numerous local business, including the company’s own building, Pinnacle IV at Kierland, 14850 N. Scottsdale Road. The company’s focus is on higher-end clientele.

Blue Desert wins major redesign contract

Blue Desert Interiors was recently awarded the contract to redesign the 11,400-square-foot Orthopedic Department at Dignity Health’s Mercy Gilbert Medical Center. The goal of the project is to improve patient healing by redesigning existing interiors into a baseball theme that inspires post-surgery activity through therapy and promotes an atmosphere of team collaboration with their family members and staff. “We’re the only interior design firm in the Phoenix Metro area that specializes in residential, commercial and healthcare spaces,” said Mark LaPalm, IFDA and founder of Blue Desert Interiors, which is based in the Airpark.

Just in time for the holiday shopping season, Scottsdale Quarter introduces five new tenants: fashion stores La Foi Boutique, Planet Blue and Forever 21; YAP, a shop for man’s best friend; and Skin Laundry, a skincare spa that offers 10-minute clinical facials. The 28-acre shopping, dining and entertainment destination is at Scottsdale Road and GreenwayHayden Loop.

High-end condos planned for Silverleaf

Cypress Development Group is poised to start construction of the Sterling Collection in the posh Silverleaf neighborhood in the first quarter of 2015. Priced from the low $1 million, the 213-condominium project at the southeast corner of Pima Road and Thompson Peak Parkway in North Scottsdale features a robotic valet, among other amenities. Delivery is expected early 2016.

TPC Scottsdale, host of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, has completed $15 million in renovations to the Stadium Course ($10.5 million), clubhouse, meeting space and restaurant, reports AZCentral.com. Dramatic white sand in the traps, 250-plus trees, new green locations on four holes, and fairway and green modification on hole 13 are among the improvements. Latin Americantheme Toro replaces the Grill at TPC; overlooking the 18th green, the restaurant is run by the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. Scottsdale began the renovations in April. Scottsdale issued debt to pay for the project, with debt service to be paid by revenues from the city’s hotel-bed tax collections, as well as a temporary increase in the TPC’s annual operations fee, which is paid to the city.

The second Live & Local, presented by Go Daddy and benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, featured more than 50 local chefs, beers, wines and spirits as well as local musicians rocking the night away for a good cause. The event drew more than 3,000 people to Scottsdale Civic Center Mall on Nov. 9, helping to raise several hundred thousand dollars for the Clubs, including the Piper, Thunderbirds and Vestar branches in the heart of the Airpark.

A hybrid office, residential and retail development is in the works for 92nd Street and Bahia Drive near WestWorld in Scottsdale. Third-quarter market figures show the Scottsdale Airpark commercial real estate market continues to improve, reported Craig Trbovich, a commercial real estate broker with Commercial Properties Inc. (CPI), specializing in investment sales and tenant/landlord representation in the Phoenix and Scottsdale submarkets. Office market vacancy, once at nearly 28 percent, is down to 16.6 percent, and the average asking rate is up approximately 10 percent over the past two years. The industrial market vacancy rate has improved from 21.4 percent in 2010 to 8.4 percent currently. Also the average asking lease rate is up 16 percent over a year ago. “One thing that has not returned to the market is new industrial construction, but with lease rates rising and vacancy rates moving lower, new development may be just around the corner,” said Trbovich. gnature Style World’s-largest FBO operator swoops into Scottsdale

O

n this blustery day, the ground crew are wrapped in neon yellow windbreakers as they silently wait for the Gulfstream’s engine roar to quiet after touchdown.

The private jet taxies to the apron behind Signature Flight Support, and ground crew members spring into action, securing tires, clambering up to retrieve two pieces of luggage from a rear compartment, driving the passenger’s Jeep to the foot of stairs unfolding from the cabin. A ponytailed woman in jodhpurs and riding boots disembarks and double checks the bags already placed in her vehicle. She slides behind the wheel and drives through the security gate gliding open 30 feet away.

Later, the pilots will refresh themselves in Signature’s private terminal, perhaps taking advantage of the individual sleeping rooms, and crew will refuel the jet and tow it to a secure hangar space.

Gregory Gibson, general manager, looks on with delight. A true aerophile, he can’t hide the pleasure he takes in overseeing every aspect of Scottsdale’s newest FBO, or fixed-based operator.

The term “FBO” doesn’t come up often in conversations among coach-class travelers flying commercial airlines.

But to bona fide jet-setters, it’s as familiar as “service station.” When private jets land at an airport, they need services and infrastructure unless they’re working through a management/charter company, such as Pinnacle Aviation, that supplies its own. FBOs coordinate with aircraft operators and pilots to furnish fuel, terminals, hangar space and other amenities, ranging from coffee and catering to magazines and car rentals.

Scottsdale Airport is home to two FBOs: Landmark Aviation, which has operated there for decades, and Signature Flight Support, which swooped in Aug. 1 when it acquired the assets of Scottsdale AirCenter and took over its FBO service.

The buy was a coup for Orlando, Fla.-based Signature, which operates more than 120 locations throughout the globe, making it the world’s largest FBO and distribution network, according to the company. Not only did Scottsdale AirCenter already have a sterling reputation in a key market, but the facility boasts striking architecture and design features. …continues on page 20 December 2014 Scottsdale Airpark News | 19

In January 2012, Gregory Gibson got his “tail feathers clipped,” the custom of taking scissors to the shirt of a student pilot after his first solo flight. “That was one of the best days of my life,” Gibson says of the achievement.

“Our acquisition of this location was very strategic for us. We are one of only two FBOs on this field, and this is a landlocked area, so you wouldn’t expect many more to pop up,” says Gibson.

Another plus, he adds, is that Signature’s target clientele frequently travel in and out of Scottsdale: “As to the bottom line, it’s a huge

opportunity to connect with our customer base, right here, in one of the No. 1 resort destinations in the country.”

When Signature took ownership, the existing team at Scottsdale AirCenter had such an outstanding performance record, the entire staff was retained. Gibson was the only Signature employee who came to Scottsdale, transferring from the smaller Kansas City FBO he’d managed for five years.

Compared to other FBOs in the Signature network and beyond, the Scottsdale building is a something of a standout, Gibson says, gazing appreciatively at the high ceilings and angled walls punctuated by steel cable, chrome flourishes and suspended artwork.

“I’ve been here three months, and I’m still very interested in looking around,” says Gibson. “It’s just overall eye pleasing.”

managed by a charter company/flight department that will call ahead to alert FBOs to prepare for an imminent arrival.

Though Signature doesn’t provide services such as catering or detailing, the FBO is all about facilitating the needs of customers through relationships with vendors.

For instance, Gibson can’t speak highly enough of Ciao Baby Catering, which operates out of Scottsdale Airport. If catered meals are requested, Signature staff or the jet’s flight department place an order with Ciao Baby; the food is then delivered to Signature, which stores it until the crew gives the go-ahead for loading.

Gibson’s love affair with the wild blue yonder began in 1991 when he began flying around the globe as a flight attendant for Continental Airlines—one of the “coolest jobs” he says he ever had.

Several years later, he returned to University of Cincinnati, earned a business degree and entered the management program at United Airlines, moving up through positions as in-flight supervisor and manager to operations manager and finally labor-relations representative. Then he was laid off in 2008.

“As a result, I got to rethink what I was doing. I was passionate about aviation—I love airplanes— and I got into this,” he says of the transition into FBO management for Signature Flight Services.

Gibson had always wanted to learn to fly, and when Signature rolled out a program encouraging management to get a pilot’s license so they better understood pilots and customers, he was one of the first in line. He trained five days every week for six months to get his license, taking his first solo trip at the Kansas City FBO with all his co-workers watching.

“It was such a huge day for me,” he says. “Talk about a lump in your throat. The instructor said, ‘You’re ready,’ and shut the door. I took off and flew around—it was too much, it was surreal. I landed and couldn’t believe what I had done.”

Gibson feels privileged to have received the transfer to Scottsdale and the opportunities that come along with the new position. Though, he notes, he hasn’t had a single minute to fly since he got here—and going cold turkey after logging 300 hours in a Cessna 182 in the three years since he got his license hasn’t been easy.

“This first year isn’t about flying,” he says. “It’s about getting my arms around the business.”

The next several weeks will prove a true challenge with the demands of winter visitors flooding in for Barrett-Jackson, the Waste Management Phoenix Open and Super Bowl. Signature is arranging to bring in extra vans, employees, ground equipment and refrigerators from its other FBO locations to support the demand in Scottsdale.

Is Gibson feeling the pressure?

“My stress is high,” he says, suddenly wearing the same grin as when the Gulfstream landed. “But I’m confident we will achieve success.” 

J

ust three years ago, Gemini Air Group was managing a single airplane out of intimate offices and a leased hangar near Scottsdale Airport. In sort of an effortless glide toward growth, like a rare orchid marching toward inevitable bloom, the boutique management company’s management numbers have since ticked up to five aircraft.

Earlier this year, Gemini also earned its own charter certificate, with all planes under management available for charter with as little as four hours notice.

Providing the organic, driving fuse has been Gemini president and owner Tim Carpay’s easy, Canadian manner. If Mounties road the skies, they’d exude the same kind of confidence, capability and likeability. Carpay, 57, hails from Vancouver and first pierced the heavens as a teenager in float planes, flying up and down Canadian’s west coast.

Before moving to Scottsdale in 1995, Carpay ran a nineaircraft charter company in Vancouver. One of his clients purchased his own plane and asked Carpay to manage it for him in the “West’s Most Western Town,” and the move

was made to Arizona. A couple years later, the client sold that plane, but one of the charter passengers who’d booked the owner’s aircraft bought his own jet and, impressed with Carpay’s performance, asked him to manage it.

“And every client we’ve had started as a charter client,” Carpay says. “They buy an airplane and put it with us. They like the way we do things.”

helped a client purchase this fall—was a huge coup for the management company. The large-cabin jet, capable of flying to London or Paris nonstop, is the only Global Express based in the Airport. Due to its hulking size, Carpay houses the plane in leased hangar space from nearby Signature Flight Services.

Gemini now leases two and a half adjacent hangars behind the office, expanding into space that became available at just the right times. The privately owned property is “behind the fence/Airpark,” and has its own fuel farm and an access road to the runway. Unlike the FBOs, which are

right at Scottsdale Airport, Gemini doesn’t have to pay city of Scottsdale flowage fees, which saves their clients quite a bit on fuel costs.

Though Carpay would like to someday invest in a larger, consolidated office/hangar space to facilitate operations (and he’s got some ideas), his vision for expansion is modest.

“We’re kind of at a point where we want to stop for a while,” he says. “I never wanted to be a big company. I want to grow it maybe one more airplane. You can’t provide the same kind of service if there are too many airplanes.” 

The Gemini Difference

Gemini isn’t in the aircraft sales business, though they’ll assist current and future management clients in locating the right jet for their needs if asked. Managing an aircraft involves taking care of everything to do with the plane: pilots, mechanics, hangar space, and arranging charter flights to defray costs when jets would otherwise be sitting idle.

“We really focus on safety and service. We have full-time flight attendants, mechanics, pilots, so we can make sure we are providing the same type of service every time, and obviously we have a fulltime charter person to take care of all that,” Carpay says. “I feel we provide more than most companies. If you use contractors, you just can't teach them everything you want to teach them.”

All 22 of Gemini’s employees are fulltime. Carpay himself will often pull pilot duty for owners' trips, flying everywhere from Paris in springtime to Minnesota in darkest winter.

The company’s charter customers consist primarily of 15 regulars, with “quarter-share companies—the NetJets of the world” relying partially on Gemini to provide backup for their fleets in case of overflow.

Hangar on

Starting in 2011, business began to accelerate, the trigger coinciding with nearly a 50 percent drop in jet prices from 2008. “First a Challenger showed up … about a year and half later, the next one came alone," says Carpay. "It just happened organically. Some of the clients we knew for years decided to buy airplanes.”

Berryman and her Time for Sale Mobile Detailing team clean up to five planes a day, from single-engine twoseater Cessnas to Gulfstreams, mostly at Scottsdale Airport.

They swarm over and inside the aircraft, brandishing long poles topped with “Doodlebug” pads to scrub the exterior, shampooing carpets, polishing brightwork (baby oil is great for removing fingerprints from stainless steel), even cleaning blankets and linens—whatever it takes to turn out squeaky clean results.

them, on sweltering summer days and nippy winter mornings, ensuring every detail is attended to.

“Our customers charter their aircraft as well as using it for their own personal use, and they’re very particular,” Berryman says. “They want it absolutely perfect, every time. It’s like a hotel room. You don’t want to be coming in and see crumbs and fingerprints from strangers who were there before. It has to be spot-on—five-star treatment.”

Her customers include celebrities and corporate CEOs, and Berryman keeps mum when asked for details. Privacy is another service, she says.

Her crew does whatever it takes to go the extra mile to make the customer happy, Berryman adds. Sometimes that means leaving gifts on board—a bottle of wine, cookies—in the same way hotels leave mints on pillows for guests to discover.

“I treat it like it’s not just a cleaning but more of a concierge service,” Berryman says. “It’s not just giving something a lick and a promise and saying it’s good enough. People don’t forget the added touch.”

And Berryman does it in style, pulling up to a job in her Porsche that hauls a trailer emblazoned with her signature

How It All Started

She calls her company Time for Sale because it began as a personal assistant business. After graduating in business from ASU, Berryman worked with an Airpark engineering consulting company.

“That was in 1992,” she says. “We were located in a hangar, which allowed me to meet a lot of pilots and be around the Airpark environment.”

In 2005, after a divorce, she decided to start her own business to help people who didn’t have time to pick up cleaning, take the kids to soccer, meet repairmen at home—“Whatever people needed done, that’s what I’d be hired for.”

Berryman credits a neighbor, retired Air Force Lt. Col. Dave O’Neil, for getting her into the aircraft cleaning business. “I was going in all kinds of directions,” she says. “I knew Colonel Dave for years. He knew about my personal assistant business, and one day he asked me if I could clean his airplane. I owe so much to him because he recommended me to friends who also needed their aircraft cleaned.”

…continued from page 33 “I got busier and busier with the airplanes, and decided this is the direction I’d rather go in,” Berryman says.

Berryman has four full-time employees—some days her husband, Cliff, also works on the planes—and she doesn’t plan to expand. “I like the intimacy,” she says. “I like things small, so I can take care of every job. Sometimes you can get too big and you can fall short and lose sight of what’s really important. I want to take care of four or five planes a day so I can make sure everything is done right.”

Their services have expanded to include cleaning of customers' personal vehicles and boats. Some owners park their vehicle at the hangar when they leave for a trip.

Berryman’s team can detail it right there so the customer lands and has a pristine vehicle to drive away.

Time for Sale also cleans offices in the hangars and adjacent buildings and maintains hangar floors. “I do about six floors in the Airpark,” Berryman says. “The biggest one is about 18,000 square feet.”

One of the company’s newest and most popular services is the application of ToughGuard, which provides the aircraft with a coating designed to increase efficiency, protect the aircraft’s paint and make future cleaning easier and quicker.

Unlike some other Airpark businesses, Berryman doesn’t expect a spike in orders during the coming Super Bowl week.

“The planes usually are cleaned where they’re based, so they’re not coming here with dirty equipment,” she says. “Unless they hit weather, or you have five or six people eating popcorn in the cabin on the way here, the plane probably won’t need cleaning while it’s here.”

But there’s always the unexpected.

“You have to be very flexible and very understanding,” Berryman says. “It’s not your typical ‘show up and make 40 loaves of bread and go home’ kind of job.” For example, a plane may arrive from a chartered flight where the passengers left a real mess just as the aircraft’s actual owner announces plans to travel. “You may have one day to do it; you may have three hours.”

Having a small business operating right at Scottsdale Airport is like working in a small town, Berryman says. Referrals are essential to her success. “People here know everybody. If you don’t treat one person well, it can ripple through. I’m very fortunate, but I’m very sensitive to that issue, too.” 

ou’ve seen the directional signs to Scottsdale Municipal Airport, you’ve spotted the planes en route, but have you ever been to the namesake facility that the Airpark has grown up around?

Even if you live or work here, probably not.

We haven’t conducted an official study or anything, but based on empirical evidence over the last five years (hundreds of chats with people in the Airpark), most people know it’s vaguely “over there,” waving in a direction easterly of Scottsdale Quarter and westerly of the Northsight Costco, but they’ve not stepped foot inside or even driven past.

Well here are a few pithy facts about the airport, and a look inside the facility that’s just around the corner from you … somewhere.

1. How to get to the terminal.

Take Greenway Parkway east and continue past Scottsdale Road, when it immediately turns into a street called Butherus (we admit we don’t know how to pronounce this for sure). Just a minute or two later, you’ll dead end at a stop sign in front of Scottsdale Airport. Make a left onto a one-way roadway and park for free in the lot right across from the terminal. If you take a right onto Airport Drive, you’ll go past several attractive office buildings privately owned on city land.

2. What the Airport Advisory Committee does.

The City Council appointed this ninemember citizen advisory board to review and offer recommendations on policy matters related to the airport, review development proposals, airport-area land use, fees and safety concerns. For example, developers who want to build multistory buildings anywhere near the airport can’t take their proposal to the planning department until they first get the thumbs-up from these guys and gals. It’s safe to say, members are passionate about aviation the importance of the airport to Scottsdale’s financial future.

3. Meet Sarah Ferrara.

She’s the planning and outreach coordinator for Scottsdale Airport, and works upstairs in the terminal, home to the airport’s administrative offices. You’ll see her at public workshops related to the airport, meetings of the Airport Advisory Committee, etc.

4. How the airport intends to handle intense Super Bowl travel.

OK, in 2008, the last time the Valley hosted the Super Bowl, flights in and out of Scottsdale Airport had a few, uh, hitches. Bowl is coming back,” one observer remarked. This time around, the airport’s new aviation director, Gary Mascaro, and staff are determined all will go smoothly, even if the game is a dud and a slew of visitors decide to jet away at half-time. How? For one thing, the airport has introduced a brand new reservation system that will be managed by the FBOs (fixed-base operators) during Super Bowl weekend. Even base tenants and private charter companies will filter all their arrivals/departures through the FBOs so that they are highly synchronized with all parties working together. Another critical improvement, Ferrara told the Scottsdale Airpark News, is a close partnership throughout the event with the FAA, which determines who goes where in Southwest regional airspace. The Scottsdale Airport Tower will also be open extended hours over the weekend (normal hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.), meaning pilots don’t have to use only visual cues to navigate.

5. You can rent an office right at the airport!

Adjacent to the terminal building is an attractive little office building, complete with patio and conference rooms, called the Aviation Business Center. Tenants include aviation-related enterprises such as Southwest Flight Center as well as businesses like Chameleon Music whose owners just enjoy the proximity of flight. Space is now available.

6. A new Airport Operations Center building is in the works.

It’s very cramped quarters for city employees at the airport, and plans are underway to build a facility near the terminal to primarily house operations and maintenance. The admin staff will keep their

offices in the Terminal Building. The project is expected to cost nearly $5 million. When construction is finished, a hangar now being used for equipment storage will be available for rental, with funds going to the city.

7. Landmark Aviation will unveil its new FBO facility before the Super Bowl.

Longtime airport tenant Landmark, one of only two fixed-base operators at the airport, is just about to finish up a major renovation of its facility. One thing is for sure, company officials told the city: It will be finished before the Super Bowl!

8. Rent a car at Scottsdale Airport.

Little-known fact treasured by locals: You can rent a car right at Scottsdale Airport, a handy-dandy locale for many of us. Enterprise and Hertz have reps inside the terminal, and both companies were already getting a plethora of calls about Super Bowl weekend reservations when we stopped by in November.

9. Terminal low-down.

The truth is almost nobody uses the terminal anymore, except as a venue for public meetings. If you fly in or out on a private jet, you’ll go through an FBO or the management/charter company’s facilities at the airport—not hang out at the city’s terminal, though it’s open to the public and you can get free Wi-Fi there. Just a couple

of years ago, the terminal’s interior could be kindly described as “retro ’70s,” but due to the convoluted demise of a company called Set Jet, the terminal is downright swanky these days. Set Jet, a startup with a membership-based model for private air travel, rented a major hunk of the terminal in 2013, paid to refurbish it, then relinquished its lease late last year when a key

party was arrested on unrelated fraud and money-laundering conspiracy charges. Maybe you know him. The upside is, the terminal and its rest rooms are now very, very nice. 

lizabeth “Lizzy” Williams, a student at Arizona Culinary Institute, was recently honored as a top contender at the Scottsdale Regional Food Championships, and went on to compete last month in the World Food Championships held in Las Vegas.

Williams went to the championships on the strength of her recipe for a three-cheese pizza that she calls “Manna From Heaven,” created by her and a friend from her hometown of El Paso, Texas.

“Baking is my passion, and I grew up watching my mom and grandmother cook with very organic and natural ingredients,” says Williams. “I would help make our bread for the week, and I always loved how our creations made people happy—and gave me so much enjoyment.”

Williams was originally enrolled in pre-nursing courses, but she decided to follow her passion and obtained an associate’s degree in pastry in El Paso.

When her mom came to Arizona for medical reasons, however, Williams decided to follow her and enrolled at Arizona Culinary Institute for the opportunity to enhance her baking skills, while also gaining cooking and restaurant management experience.

“Lizzy has the smarts and talent to take her career to the top,” says Arizona Culinary Institute Chef Instructor Philip Sayre.

Williams is determined to own day open up a custom-cake shop.

“I just love working with fondant and creating cakes that are truly my own,” says Williams. 

Whether you have a retail shop here in Scottsdale, provide a specialized service, work business-tobusiness or have a nonprofit in need of outreach, you can close out 2014 on a high note by simply focusing on what you want to accomplish. Here’s how.

Here’s what to expect in December.

Holiday spending will go up, as it usually does. According to Retail TouchPoints, consumers will spend 3.5 percent more over last year.

Online spending will go up too.

E-commerce company Volusion predicts that online shoppers will splurge 9 percent more than in 2013.

So now that you know this season is going to be busier, it’s time to start mar-

The holiday season brings in 20 percent to 40 percent of yearly sales for small and midsized retailers, according to the National Retail Federation. Zero in on what you want. Is it: • Reaching new customers?

Once you know your marketing goal, you can focus on planning.

Let’s get engaged through email.

Email marketing yields one of the highest ROIs in advertising; just saying.

If you have an audience that has already been getting email communications from you, email should be part of your holiday promotion plan. Consider sending separate emails about the promotion, but also make sure you’re including offers in your regular newsletter to drive sales and put you at readers’ top of mind.

What kinds of promotions are best to include in your emails?

• Coupon or discount • Free shipping • Suggest products or services • Encourage customers to buy directly from your website • If running an end-of-the-year donation drive, make readers aware • Promotions that increase awareness of your business or organization • Membership and loyalty programs When you create your promotions, make sure to answer this question: Why does this message/offer matter RIGHT NOW? That’s what your audience is thinking every time they receive any message in their inbox. Use a strong subject line that tells them the most important information in this email. Also make it clear what your offer is and why it benefits them.

Let’s get social.

There is no such thing as an emailonly promotion anymore.

Email is part of social media and any campaign you send via email should also be shared on your social media sites.

Make sure that social media is part of your holiday marketing strategy.

One of the advantages of social media is your fans’ interactions with your content can be seen by their networks. They can easily share your content, giving you a greater chance to reach more people.

• Post your email newsletters and email promotions on your social media sites.

• Make your images work for you—

post product photos; social media users interact more with images than just text or text with a link.

• You can engage with your audience.

Give them shopping advice for the holiday season.

• Ask them what they need help with or what they think about the holidays; use Facebook questions.

It’s all about timing.

Timing is important during the holidays. Along with national holidays, think about the retail events that have become popular over the last few years, such as November’s Small Business (something to consider next year, as 27 percent of participants saw an increase in sales).

Also think about shipping dates in your promotions. Alert customers when you have free shipping or ship-by dates. Plan for exclusive offers and sales, giving your customers enough time to take advantage of discounts.

Do, measure, repeat.

If you’re not measuring, you are not marketing. Period. You should know who is opening your marketing emails, when and how many times, and what they clicked on individually and generally.

Know how many people respond to your surveys, sign up for your events, pay for your events or deal, or make a donation.

Most reputable services, such as Constant Contact, will provide this information in their reports.

You have to know what is working and what isn’t. Automate what you can.

Add a Join My List “tag.” This is a little tool that most any service will provide.

For example, Constant Contact has tools that allow you to collect email addresses from any site, including your Facebook page, Pinterest, website, everywhere.

Set up initial emails that are going out so that when someone joins your list through your website or wherever, they will immediately get a “welcome” confirmation email. And if you’ve made a promise to deliver something when they join, include it in the welcome email.

That way you don’t have to go back and mail the coupon or download link later.

Use a scheduling tool. Hootsuite is great for managing multiple social media profiles at once. MarketMeSuite is another tool that allows you to schedule your social media posts, so you can decide ahead of time what and when you want to share.

And don’t let yourself get overwhelmed by the time you think this will take.

You may have heard you need to spend five to 10 hours a week on social media.

Europe, China, and Japan Stumble into Global Recession

I

n the early fall of 2007, months before the subprime mortgage crisis began to give markets the jitters, I and about 75 other top advisors from around the country were in Monaco attending a financial industry convention. Our keynote speaker, Scott Minerd, the chief investment officer at Guggenheim Partners, was unable to attend in person and had to present to us by phone from his home in California, nearly half a world away. The reason, he

‘Ominous portents of dark foreboding’ … seriously? began to explain to us, was that changes were occurring in the bond and currency markets that would soon spill over into equities and were consuming his every minute. As Scott spoke of massive losses in real estate yet to come (home values were at all-time highs and rising), job losses of 600,000 per month nationally (unemployment was only 4.6 percent), the possible bankruptcy of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (which shocked us all), and the

eventual bear market in equities (which had almost fully recovered their dot-com losses), everyone in the room gasped in disbelief. We had always known Scott to understate eventual events, err on the side of temperance, and always be proven right in the end, which made that year’s forecast all the more unbelievable compared to the recently restored health of the economy and markets. We were shocked.

I share this recollection because Scott

and others who were equally prescient at the time are once again warning of ominous things to come. Europe is sliding into recession as its powerhouse economy, Germany, rather than slowing the decline of the peripheral economies (Greece, Portugal, Spain, Italy), seems to be leading the way into the abyss. In a recent Guggenheim release, Scott writes, “Europe must act now. Things in Europe are bad and policymakers appear already to have fallen behind the curve. The reality is the ECB will need to purchase at least another €1.5 trillion in assets, and even that may not be enough to avert a severe slowdown. Quantitative easing in Europe is coming, but too slowly to avert a severe slowdown and perhaps even a hard landing.”

Europe is not alone. China’s economy has been slowing for months, and in a piece entitled, “Japan Economy Falls into Surprise Recession,” Marketwatch reported that “Japan’s real GDP shrank 1.6 percent

on an annualized basis as firms cut inventories and held back on capital investment.

None of the 18 economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had forecast a contraction; the median forecast was for a 2.25 percent expansion. The figure marked the second quarter of contraction, after the economy shrank 7.3 percent in the AprilJune quarter.”

Note that 18 out of 18 economists got it wrong, off by an astonishing 3.85 percent, not the usual half a percent, something that should raise eyebrows among the investor class that too often depends on such forecasts.

So what does this mean for U.S. markets? Will the global flight to safety bring additional capital to our bonds and equities, as foreign investors prefer our “least worst” markets to their own—or will the growing global recession drag U.S. markets down with it? Whatever you decide, the chart nearby should serve to inform our place in history. Only the bull markets

that ended in 1929 and 2000 lasted longer than this Fed-engineered bull—right before they ended badly. As Scott Minerd put it: “The events overseas provide ominous portents of things to come. If we do get a sign of a bear market in U.S. equities, it could be that the events in Europe presage what lies ahead for the United States. Is it too late to change these shadows of dark foreboding? It is hard to tell, but time is not on our side.”

There's always a reason behind why we don't accomplish the things we say we want to have in life. In fact, it's typically because of some old, worn-out programming we have running through our minds. It becomes the backdrop of our lives. I see it every single month, without exception. It doesn't matter if you're a doctor or an attorney, a college student or a stay-at-home mom, a CEO or an entry-level manager.

We say we want to be healthier, yet we keep putting junk into our bodies. We say we are going to chase after that new career, but we don't even update our resume. We say we want a better marriage, but we come home and fall into our old habits of turning on the TV instead of turning toward our mate. We say we want to

leadership start that business and leave the corporate rat race, but we allow fear to overcome us and stop us before we even start. We say we are going to be a more impactful, empowering leader, but we don't encourage enough and gossip too much.

It's simply easier to complain and commiserate about what we want and don't have than take that first step to actual attainment.

If you find yourself with a list of goals and a true burning passion to have those things, then just start.

Yup, it's that simple. Take your first step.

Our minds are funny, complex creatures. Our brains do not like things to be left unfinished. We are wired for completion. So when that to-do list seems too long, that project seems too big, or that massive goal seems way too massive—just start. You will be amazed at how the act of just beginning a project will lead itself into completion right before your eyes.

And when you don't see immediate results? When those pounds don't just shed after week one, or that bank account doesn't get bigger in the first quarter ... then what?

Keep going. Small steps. Every single day. And I mean it. EVERY. Single. Day. Nothing trumps action. Moving forward, at whatever pace you choose, will eventually lead you to your end goal. The choice is up to you. How quickly do you want to get there? And what are you willing to sacrifice to get there?

Is 2015 finally going to be your year?

The choice is yours. Is this the time when you actually do what it takes to get what you want, once and for all? Then just listen to what Nike said so many years ago, and JUST DO IT. One of my favorite sayings is, "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten." So let 2015 be your year of triumph. Let this be your big win. three-day, two-night celebration with real snow, an electric light parade and a fireworks extravaganza welcome in the holidays at the seventh annual Carefree Christmas Festival, Dec. 12-14.

The tiny town of Carefree, located just north of the Scottsdale and most famously known for its oversized Sundial, turns into an illuminated winter wonderland for the yuletide event.

Festivities take place at the Carefree Desert Gardens, 101 Easy St., from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 10 a .m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The signature Electric Light Parade, presented by APS and produced by the Carefree Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce, begins Saturday at 6 p.m. along Easy Street and is followed by a fireworks display.

Highlights include a lighted holiday village with daytime and late-night shopping, seasonal food and drink, live holiday dance and singing performances including the Salvation Army Marching Band, a Kid’s Zone with 35 tons of real snow, lighted carriage rides, ice princesses, Charles Dickens-inspired carolers, a live nativity display, and Santa.

Pet lovers are invited to bring their pets, dressed in their holiday best, for a pet parade and pictures with Santa on Sunday. Pet adoptions by the Foothills Animal Rescue (FAR) will take place throughout the day.

“The festival has become one of the most well-attended holiday events in the Valley because it brings out the child in all who attend. It is reminiscent of a traditional Christmastime of years past,” said Jo Gemmill, director and founder of the event.

The four-acre Carefree Desert Gardens provide a unique backdrop, with thousands of cacti illuminated in holiday lights for the festival.

According to Gemmill, the festival relies heavily on generous corporate and small business sponsorships to fund the event.

r. Jason Romano, a Scottsdale chiropractic physician, is offering a new twist for his patients with disc ailments—spinal decompression using a computerized DRX9000 table.

This sounds pretty space-age, but Romano brings the details down to earth.

Romano uses the DRX9000 treatments for patients who have herniated or bulging discs or degenerative disc disease, where the spine puts pressure on the disc. Traditional treatments include spinal surgery or chiropractic adjustment. Spinal decompression therapy is an alternative to those treatments.

“I look at the disc like a jelly doughnut,” Romano says. “If you put pressure on the inner part of the disc, a jelly-like substance comes out. If you can reduce the pressure, that jelly can go back in. It’s a difficult process, but in cases where I have seen pre- and post-treatment MRI reports by a radiologist, the MRI shows re-absorption of that disc material after spinal decompression, so it no longer bulged.”

Spinal decompression is traction, but with a difference. The therapy involves intermittent motorized traction calibrated specifically for the patient’s height and weight and the disc area involved. Over a series of treatments, the traction can pull the vertebra apart enough to reduce pressure on the disc, Romano says.

During therapy, the patient is fitted with a harness and lies on a table.

Cushions are placed under the patient’s neck and knees, to achieve the proper position. Then Romano sets the machine to pull at a precise angle and pressure, with periods of relaxation between pulls.

Treatments usually last 30 minutes. “You feel it pull, yet there’s virtually no discomfort,” Romano says. “I’ve had patients as old as 86 on this table.

Once the treatment is done, you’re a little sore because we’re doing work.”

Many patients have electrotherapy, ice or some other additional treatment for soreness after the therapy, and typically they can walk out of the office and go back to work after a session.

Romano says the therapy can be an effective alternative to surgery for many patients.

“It’s important for someone to come in for a consultation, to see if we can help them,” he says. “I can tell pretty quickly whether this therapy can help them, whether they should have other chiropractic treatments and procedures, or whether they should see a surgeon.

times they say, ‘Hey, Dr. Romano, I don’t feel any better,’ I say go have the surgery.

There has been some controversy about the table and others like it, which Romano acknowledges.

Criticism centers on marketing and overstated claims of successful treatment made by some practitioners.

“We have had people who don’t get better with epidurals, physical therapy, injections, surgery— nothing will work for every single patient,” he says.

“But this will do no harm. It won’t cause additional damage to the disc.”

Success also depends on the patient’s involvement, Romano says. “I emphasize that it isn’t just about coming in and doing spinal decompression. You’re a partner in your healthcare. It’s important to get healed through the therapy, then exercise to strengthen your back so you’ll have fewer issues down the road.”

Romano hopes to grow his practice through use of the DRX9000, and also by expanding his massage therapy services to workers in the Airpark area. That includes chair massage, where the therapist can go onsite to treat individuals who spend much of their workday sitting in front of computer screens.

“We’re very fortunate that our massage therapist, Rolinda Teller, stayed with the practice when we purchased it,” Romano says. “We probably kept 98 percent of the practice’s existing patients after our purchase, and I give credit to Rolinda for helping us with that.” 

Airpark chiropractor invents customizable pillow for correct sleeping postures

o you toss and turn all night long?”

“Do you sleep with your pillow folded in half at night?”

“Do you use more than one pillow at night when you sleep?”

“Do you wake up at night because you pillow is too high?”

Dr. Jason Loth, a North Scottsdale sports chiropractor, fires his questions at the camera recording the uShopTV informercial for his new creation, the Spine Align Pillow. He sounds passionate, and he is.

Two years ago, Loth wasn’t even dreaming about filming advertising videos. He was focused on solving a nagging problem—that classic inspiration for many an inventor.

After working as a sports chiropractor

for more than 15 years, he was frustrated by why some patients would respond well to treatment only to come back with the same upper-back issues and headaches. “The problem was there all over again. I couldn’t get to the root of the issue, and I knew that sleep posture was having a big impact,” says Loth.

Many people sleep with a pillow that juts their head forward or upward, causing a host of issues, from migraines to arm numbness.

The doctor set about personally trying every "therapeutic" pillow he could find on the market. He tested about two dozen, and none worked well for every single body type. As a health professional who counsels his own patients to “address the underlying problem not just the symptoms,” Loth

wasn’t about to let the matter rest.

He resolved to create a single adjustable pillow that would allow people of all shapes and sizes to sleep on both back and side in a correct sleeping posture that kept their cervix and spine aligned.

“I found that poor sleeping posture was one of the major contributing factors in putting stress on their spinal joints, muscles and surrounding structures,” Loth says. “Most pillows do much more harm than good … and most of the cervical orthopedic contour pillows that are designed to do this actually don’t.”

years, with Loth finding a comfortable adjustable material that would provide the perfect amount of torque and support. He settled on a filler of 100-percent natural shredded Dunlop latex, a rubberized material from the sap of rubber trees. Unlike Memory Foam, which is made from a petroleum product, the Dunlop doesn’t have a chemical odor and the shredded material is infinitely adjustable.

The filler is inserted into the pillow’s three chambers and may be gently shaken or massaged to customize the amount of support an individual needs. Users can also open the zippered chambers to move the internal fill from chamber to chamber.

One side of the pillow is slightly fatter, designed to support the necks of those 5-foot 7-inches and up; the other is more delicate for slighter frames, with both sloping into a gentle hollow for the head. The remaining two sides are bulkier, designed to keep the neck and head aligned in side positions. As sleepers move about in the night, they can swivel their pillows for continual support.

Loth began his marketing by selling the pillows to his patients in Scottsdale and the East Valley, many of whom have posted video testimonials on his website.

“Once people lay on it, they feel the position they should be in vs. what they have been doing,” he says. “A lot of people say, my neck pain has gone away, my headaches are gone, I sleep better. I get all kinds of positive feedback.”

It was time to ramp up production and marketing. Loth began posting testimonials on his product website, flew to Florida to record a 30-minute infomercial, which will run through the end of the year on uShopTV—a competitor to QVC that’s more affordable for entrepreneurs—and is in the process of getting the product released on Amazon any day.

“Our goal is to send a lot of our customers to Amazon to give us five-star feedback,” Loth says. “When you become a best seller on Amazon, you come up on the front pages and get more exposure.”

Celebrating 29 years of business excellence, the Sterling Award is one of the most coveted business awards in the Valley, with a rigorous application, judging and selection process. Four teams of judges each conduct an initial review of all applications and narrow the field to

three finalists in each category. Once the finalists are identified, the judging teams visit those companies to conduct a personal interview and get a behind-thescenes look at the operations. Once that step is complete, each judge independently casts a set of points for the finalists based on their embodiment of the award criteria. The points are tallied and the results remain secret until the day of the event. One of the highlights of the Sterling Awards Celebration is the highly anticipated video presentation of each of the 12 finalists. Only members of the Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce are eligible to apply for the Sterling Award.
