Plexus Worldwide donates $100,000 to national organizations Plexus Worldwide, a direct-selling health and wellness company focused on health and happiness, donated $100,000 to five nonprofit organizations, including Special Olympics, Black Girls CODE, Our Military Kids, The Trevor Project and The George Pocock Rowing Foundation.

Each organization received $20,000 from Plexus to help expand their programs to more people across the United States.

These outstanding organizations are committed to empowering underrepresented communities.

“These organizations have made it their mission to serve communities and empower young people to embrace who they are, while creating awareness and teaching inclusivity,” says Tarl Robinson, founder and CEO of Plexus Worldwide.

“We are proud to be able to do our part to help them continue their programs, which enrich the lives of so many people

Delta Dental of Arizona’s Allan Allford announces retirement

Allan Allford, president and CEO of Delta Dental of Arizona, plans to retire by December 31, after more than 11 years leading the state’s top dental insurance company and more than 43 years in the health care and private sectors.

“Under Allan’s leadership, Delta Dental of Arizona has nearly tripled its membership and our foundation has made significant strides in improving oral health throughout the state,” says Candace Wiest, chairwoman of the board of directors for Delta Dental of Arizona. “He will be greatly missed but has developed a team of strong leaders that will ensure the company’s continued success.”

Delta Dental is the largest and most experienced dental insurer in Arizona, covering more than 1.2 million smiles. During Allford’s tenure, the company achieved substantial growth in membership and revenue, increased the size of its PPO dentist network, improved business operations, and developed a workforce culture that attracts and retains top talent. However, it is the advancement of the nonprofit insurer’s mission to improve lives by promoting optimal oral health that Allford is most proud of.

“While I’m proud of the many accomplishments our team has made over the past 11 years, it’s the relationships and lives we’ve touched that I’ll remember most,” Allford says.

Since 2011, the Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation has improved the well-being of more than 2 million Arizonans and given back $11 million to the communities it serves through community grants, strategic partnerships, education programs and dental supply donations. Some key initiatives include substantial gifts to St. Vincent de Paul in Phoenix to expand and operate its dental clinic for underserved children and adults, the creation of an oral health educator role at Phoenix Children’s Hospital to help lower patient infection rates, and a partnership with HonorHealth to fund dental treatment for uninsured patients who visit emergency rooms with dental issues.

Delta Dental of Arizona’s board of directors is working with executive search firm WittKieffer to identify and select a replacement. The approach to the process will ensure a smooth leadership transition, and Allford will continue to lead Delta Dental in the interim.

Thunderbird Field II Veterans Memorial Inc. recently awarded a 2021 Aviation Scholarship to Bradley Riedle, an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University student working toward a Bachelor of Science in aeronautics.

TB2 is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to preserving Scottsdale’s aviation history, honoring all military veterans and creating educational opportunities for Arizona students studying all aspects of aviation.

Thunderbirds, Waste Management Phoenix Open raise $115K The Thunderbirds, the hosts of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, raised $115,250 through its Faces on 16 campaign, a program that had fans donate money to have their face at the iconic 16th hole during the 2021 playing of the “The People’s Open.”

The program was a unique way to raise additional funds for so many charities in need, especially during the current pandemic.

“We’ve seen what other teams and leagues have been doing to showcase

‘virtual’ fans, and we just wanted to put our own spin on it at the 16th hole,” says Tournament Chairman Scott Jenkins.

“It was awesome to see the response from our fans and how many people quickly donated to offer significant support to our local charities. We continue to say we have the greatest fans in golf, and this is a prime example.”

The $115,250 raised will be distributed to four charities — Arizona Helping Hands, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley, Phoenix

The CORE Institute donates $10K to St. Mary’s Food Bank The orthopedic practice The CORE Institute made a $10,000 donation to St. Mary’s Food Bank to help meet the increased demand from the COVID-19 pandemic.

St. Mary’s Food Bank helps feed hungry families throughout Phoenix, and with the donation from The CORE Institute, it is able to serve an additional 70,000 meals to Arizona families in need.

“The CORE Institute focuses on more than just musculoskeletal health, we also focus on the health of our communities,” says Dr. Mark Campbell, Arizona market president at The CORE Institute.

“So, it was important to support our

local community partner, St. Mary’s Food Bank, during this crisis that has left so many people unable to put food on their tables.”.

Food insecurity is a problem faced by nearly 2 million Arizonans every year. That number has drastically increased during the last year with COVID-19, quarantine protocols, and the loss of jobs across the state.

Nearly 30% of Arizonans are living on wages that barely cover housing and other basic necessities. With little money to spare for food, many people across Arizona often skip meals and have no other choice than to purchase the cheapest, sometimes

St. Mary’s Food Bank served 20% to 25% more families in 2020, feeding 2,000 families weekly compared with 500 in 2019.

Plexus Worldwide hosts 5K Chek It Walk

Plexus Worldwide, a direct-selling wellness company, brought people together from across the world for its annual 5K Chek It Walk, which raised $10,000 for Cancer Support Community Arizona.

From January 4 to January 6, the Scottsdalebased business rallied 888 participants who together reached a total of 10,581,743 steps. The money was donated to Cancer Support Community Arizona, whose mission is to nurture an environment that enhances the atmosphere of healing and support for anyone impacted by cancer.

“As an advocate of Cancer Support Community Arizona, we were proud to see so many people from our global community join the virtual 5K charity walk for such an important campaign,” says Alec Clark, co-founder and president of Plexus Worldwide.

“Raising awareness for such a great cause helped us reach our goal and, in turn, helped this wonderful organization that does so much for this community.”

Due to COVID-19, Plexus’ annual walk was virtual this year, allowing participants to choose their own route on their own time, as long as they logged their progress. The event was also used to promote Plexus’ Breast Chek Kit, the company’s first wellness product. It uses a tool called “sensory touch magnification” to improve the effectiveness of breast self-exams, which are encouraged for early detection of breast cancer.

“We were thrilled to partner with Plexus during this event since their company’s purpose has always been to spread health awareness and wellness, a core belief of Cancer Support Community Arizona as well,” says Debbie DiCarlo, CEO of Cancer Support Community Arizona.

“Through this donation, we can continue to provide programs and support those affected by this terrible disease.”

Stopping Short-Term Rentals Rep. John Kavanagh’s bill faces hurdles

R

By Wayne Schutsky ep. John Kavanagh’s attempt to reign in short-term rentals has won the support of Scottsdale officials but could struggle with his Republican colleagues due to a competing bill supported by the rental industry.

Kavanagh’s bill would return some power to cities and towns that was lost in 2016 when a new state law banned them from regulating short-term rentals.

If passed, HB 2481 would allow cities to create zoning restrictions to limit or even eliminate most short-term rentals, though he says the bill would not affect owneroccupied properties that rent out a room or backyard guest house.

Scottsdale is home to at least 4,000 active short-term rental properties, according to Air DNA, a market research firm.

The properties have long drawn the ire of some residents, who complain that they attract partiers and lead to noise and trash problems by dropping what are essentially commercial operations into the middle of neighborhoods.

“HB 2481 is moving forward and contains multiple reform measures that would begin to provide relief for local neighborhoods suffering the negative impacts of short-term rentals,” city spokesman Kelly Corsette says, noting it “establishes local licensing options and provides for more local zoning oversight.”

Scottsdale City Council passed ordinances in 2019 to reign in unlawful or nuisance parties at problematic short-term rentals, though the new regulations — and associated fines — applied to all properties in the city because of the 2016 state law.

“Scottsdale sees HB 2481 as the best option this year and the minimum acceptable bill that would allow the city to begin to address the many negative impacts of short-term rentals,” Corsette says.

Kavanagh, who represents much of Scottsdale, also has the support of Mayor David Ortega, who says cities are in a better position to know the impact of these rental properties.

“We know our neighborhoods; we know our traffic patterns; and, of course, we know the cost and impact on our policing and trash pickup and all these other ramifications,” he says.

Kavanagh’s bill passed the House Government and Elections Committee on February 10 on an 8-5 vote with bipartisan support, but Kavanagh tells the Scottsdale Airpark News it still faces an uphill battle.

“We’re currently pushing (former Sen. Kate Brophy-McGee)’s bill from last year that died when we adjourned, but we’re having trouble getting the votes,” Kavanagh says.

Last year, the bill also had industry support and passed in the Senate on a 25-5 vote, Kavanagh says.

However, industry heavyweights like Expedia and Airbnb have now lined up behind a competing bill supported by Sen. J.D. Mesnard, a Chandler Republican.

SB 1379 would include occupancy limits and insurance requirements for rentals and allow for revocation of a property owner’s tax license if they repeatedly violate local regulations — but stops well short of empowering cities to actually limit the number of rentals in a given area.

That bill was also passed out of the committee with support of both Democratic and Republican lawmakers, including Scottsdale Sen. Michelle Ugenti-Rita.

It does not have the support of the city of Scottsdale, though.

“Senate Bill 1379 is wrong on so many levels and just picks around the edges of the situation that we are encountering as cities and having to police and commit resources to,” Ortega says.

He says the Senate bill is too reliant on state-level regulation of tax licensing and argued the state does not have the staffing to ensure that short-term rentals are registering.

He also criticizes the penalties under Mesnard’s bill, which caps them at the amount of daily rent at the property where a violation occurred.

Kavanagh says the bill would just give cities the ability to reign in corporate rental companies that are essentially setting up commercial operations in neighborhoods.

He says it’s a compromise that returns some power to local governments without repealing the 2016 state law completely.

Kavanagh suggested the industry has been empowered by the emergence of support at the Legislature for the laxer regulations but did not rule out persuading them to switch loyalties.

“We’re going to try and get them flipped over, but it’s going to be difficult,” he says.

“I’ve got to get 60 Republicans in the House to agree with it.”

Scottsdale officials argue that Mesnard’s bill simply does go far enough.

“We do not believe the bill provides the necessary local governance structures needed to effectively manage short-term rentals and mitigate their negative impacts,” Corsette says.

Kavanagh was blunter, stating, “The Senate bill doesn’t really do anything; it’s no reform at all.” 

Getting a Facelift Scottsdale Airport to close for runway rehab

Construction on a $12 million rehabilitation of Scottsdale Airport’s single runway will begin on July 6 and is expected to shut down the airport for 45 days.

cottsdale Airport is scheduled to undergo a runway rehabilitation project this summer that will close the airport for 45 days.

The $12 million rehab is scheduled to begin on July 6 and will be the airport’s largest federally funded grant project.

Grant funding from the Federal Aviation Administration and Arizona Department of Transportation will cover 90% of the project cost. ADOT and the city of Scottsdale will pay the remaining 10%, according to the city.

The airport’s lone runway has not undergone any major rehabilitation since it was first built in 1967, airport spokeswoman Sarah Ferrara says.

The city completed an airport pavement report in 2018 and commissioned a more thorough field investigation by contractor Mead & Hunt in 2020 to confirm and update data on the state of the runway.

According to the city, the runway is in fair condition but is showing signs of distress, including cracking and raveling.

Additionally, the shoulders and blast pads are in poor condition, while some of the connectors and taxiways are still in good condition.

“The city has maximized the useful life of its one and only existing runway,” Ferrara says. “The runway is in critical need of rehabilitation to ensure the infrastructure is maintained in excellent condition to best serve the based and visiting aircraft customers.”

The rehab project will not increase the runway’s size or weight capacity.

The project will include rehabilitating the runway and associated connector taxiways along with reconstruction of the shoulders and blast pads.

It will also include electrical modifications, new pavement markings and recon-

struction of the airport’s perimeter road.

The construction shutdown will mean a temporary loss of revenues for the airport, which operates as an enterprise fund, meaning it operates self-sufficiently without allocations from the city’s general fund.

Ferrara says construction was scheduled during the airport’s slowest month.

“Our best estimate is a loss of around $163,185 in airport revenues,” she says.

“This is from losses in fuel sales, transient parking fees, customs fees, rental cars and transient landing fees.”

That would account for just a fraction of the airport’s total revenue.

The airport took in $5.9 million in total revenue in 2018-19 and is expected to exceed those numbers this fiscal year, which runs from July 2020 to June 2021, despite the negative impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the airline industry.

Scottsdale Airport appeared largely insulated from those impacts last year due to its reliance on private operators and charter providers.

“We became definitely very busy … a

majority of the people that want to do whatever they can not to get on the airlines, not to be exposed, not to go through the whole airport process and risk infection,” says Ken Casey, director of sales and acquisitions with Pinnacle Aviation, a Scottsdale-based company that offers charter and management services.

The airport is expected to bring in even more revenue — around $6.5 million — in 2020-21.

When construction kicks off in July, the airport will be fully closed to all aircraft operations and flight training activities.

“We have contacted Valley airport representatives and have assembled a contact list to help our tenants find temporary relocation options,” Ferrara says.

“Our contractors, Mead & Hunt and Banicki Construction are coordinating and working together to complete it in the quickest amount of time possible to reduce the impacts,” Ferrara says. 

o matter how high Ricky Borja’s star ascends, he always considers himself “that kid from Guam.”

Not only was he born there, but his grandmother Maria and the Chamorro culture were major influences on him.

“My grandma’s mantra in life was to care for others over oneself and to do it with no expectation of reciprocation or the requirement of any type of payback, and that really set the stage for how I chose, and continue to choose, to live my life,” Borja says.

He studied computer science in his teens and moved to Portland, Oregon — sight unseen — at 21.

Before making the move to Portland, Borja saved money for the trip by working at Guam’s Westin Resort, starting as a reservation agent but quickly rising in the ranks, leaving the property for the United States as a senior engineer across several properties.

Once stateside — and after adjusting from life in flip flops in Guam to life with four seasons and ample rain in Portland — Borja discovered a Westin property down the block from his apartment and earned a job there to help pay for his room and board while in school.

Thanks to his focus on caring for his team and guests, Borja, within 18 months, became an integral employee at the Westin while earning his computer science degree with honors.

“My life hit a crossroads at that point,” Borja says. “I spent many a sleepless night debating a position at Hewlett Packard versus continuing on in hospitality, but hospitality eventually won out.”

After 19 years, Borja is still content with his decision to choose a career caring for others all those years ago. He’s not only worked in senior management positions at prominent casinos and hotels in Nevada, California, Utah and Michigan for Starwood Hotels, Stations Casinos, Canyons Resort and Kimpton Hotels, he even worked as the vice president of operations for SGE International, overseeing international resort openings, brand standards and operational guest service campaigns for businesses worldwide, including acting as on-property consulting at Cosmopolitan Las Vegas.

Notably, he served as vice president of hotel operations at Viejas Casino & Resort in San Diego, helping it to earn the Forbes 4 Star and AAA Four Diamond ratings, and he also drove the full preopening efforts of the all-suite, all-adult Willows Hotel & Spa. “With each opportunity, including working with and for Dan Gilbert, who is best known

In 2019, Borja’s grandmother was able to smile down on “that kid from Guam” in Scottsdale, as he made his way to Arizona to help open the new Adero Resort, leading the former Copperwynd Resort’s transition to Marriott’s only Autograph Collection property in Scottsdale. Then, in 2020, another Scottsdale-area opportunity knocked — this time, in the form of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation.

“Ever since my work with Viejas Casino and likely due to my own upbringing, I felt a kinship and connection in working with members of Tribal Communities,” Borja says.

“So, when the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation approached me about being a part of opening the We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort in Fort McDowell, I had to pinch myself.”

An Airpark-area resident, Borja humbly accepted the role of We-Ko-Pa’s director of hotel operations in August 2020, where he is charged with managing more than 150 employees in the front desk, spa, housekeeping, group sales and other departments supporting the

In what little spare time Borja has, when not spending time with his girlfriend, he plays the bass in a reggae band made up of fellow Guam natives in California.

“We call ourselves 56 Hope and released our debut album, ‘Good Fortunes,‘ in 2007 and have since been written up in the San

Diego Reader, the Herald & Review and many more,” says Borja, who prior to COVID-19 traveled back and forth between Arizona and California to perform.

Given that he is able to see some of his fellow Guam friends through the band, Borja is not as homesick as he once was. That’s especially since he’s become increasingly involved in the local community. He’s looking forward to even more opportunities to connect and give back locally. 

fter shifting to online auctions at the onset of COVID-19, Barrett-Jackson marked its return to live events by hosting the first fall auction at WestWorld of Scottsdale in October.

The event was a success and proof that the world’s leading car auction house could safely host live events while helping to support the community and local businesses. Barrett-Jackson is looking forward to hosting its next live event, the Scottsdale Auction, from Saturday, March 20, to Sunday, March 27, at the same venue.

“This was a year that nobody saw coming,” says Carolyn Jackson, vice president of brand strategy and CEO Craig Jackson’s wife.

“While October did look a bit different from our typical events, we had tremendous engagement online and the action on the auction block was just as exciting.

When we return to Scottsdale in (March) it’ll be different as well, but it will feel the same in the sense that there will be that shared passion and camaraderie. Seeing how happy everyone was to return to the events really drove home how much people care for each other and share this passion for cars, and how they couldn’t wait to have those experiences together.”

Committed to putting the safety of customers and the car community first, Barrett-Jackson will incorporate the same extensive protocols in accordance with CDC guidelines at the Scottsdale Auction as it did for the previous one.

Several months prior to the October event, Barrett-Jackson met with Scottsdale and WestWorld officials to discuss ways it could innovate and upgrade the safety of the event. These enhancements included limited attendance, the addition of sanitizing stations throughout the venue, an increase in custodial staff to clean common areas, as well as advanced filtration and air treatment technologies.

The venue site was also reimagined to create more physical space between attendees and employees, along with plexiglass partitions, contactless cashiering and requiring people to wear masks.

“After working diligently with the team to put all these safety protocols into place to keep the collector car community healthy, I was absolutely thrilled that we were able to return to live events in such a responsible manner,” Jackson says.

“We were very conservative because we take this very seriously. We examined best practices from other events and set very high standards because we wanted to prove that we could do it safely. The pandemic accelerated the pace of innovation across the board.”

Barrett-Jackson hosted the fall event not only for the sake of bringing back entertainment to the devoted car community but also to help drive revenue to local businesses that had suffered as a result of COVID-19.

“There is an economic impact whenever a major event like ours is canceled, and there are so many people that depend on these events happening and help make them happen,” Jackson says. “People have bills to pay, and if these restaurants and hotels don’t make it, then the landscape of the city is forever changed. I don’t want to imagine a world where those businesses don’t exist.”

Another important aspect of BarrettJackson events are the charity auctions, where they partner with celebrities and high-profile individuals to raise funds on behalf of different charitable organizations.

Former President George W. Bush, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and NASCAR Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon are among those who have donated cars and helped raise funds for various nonprofits. At the Scottsdale Auction, Olympian Michael Phelps will donate a car to raise money for the Michael Phelps Foundation, his nonprofit that promotes water safety and emotional health among children and young athletes.

“There are so many needs right now, with mental health being one of them, especially

during the current crisis,” Jackson says.

“It’s painful to see what isolation from lockdown is doing to people, including young children. I’m so impressed by Michael’s ability to share his story and start his charity. It’s going to be a great opportunity to raise awareness for mental health.”

At the October auction, Barrett-Jackson achieved a 100% sell-through rate of rare and unique collector cars, in addition to setting multiple world records and raising $845,000 for charity. Through the donation of three charity vehicles that were sold on the auction block, critical funds and awareness were raised for Team Rubicon, an organization that supports American military veterans; Building Homes for Heroes, a nonprofit that builds and modifies homes for veterans and their families; and the HeartStrings Foundation, which donates guitars to veterans, music therapy programs and children’s hospitals.

“One of the most important elements that touches me the most are the charity cars,” Jackson says.

“Just knowing that we have the opportunity to raise money and awareness for these charities that are in desperate need of funds is very exciting. Early on in the pandemic, (racing CEO) Richard

Childress stepped up and donated a Dale Earnhardt car from his collection for our online auction in May, which went to benefit COVID-19 relief efforts. It’s always inspiring to see what members of the car community will do to help others.”

Jackson has seen her fair share of impressive cars throughout the years, but one of the vehicles that came across the auction block that spoke to her on a more emotional level was a 1934 Cadillac coupe.

It was previously owned by Nellie, her husband’s late mother.

“That was the car she drove him across the country in that he says started it all,” Jackson says. “It’s one of my favorites because it belonged to his mother, who was such a strong woman.”

The Jacksons took another trip down memory lane during the pandemic when they were going through storage units that contained various items belonging to Craig’s parents. Among those items were old films and tapes, which offered a glimpse into his life growing up.

“I didn’t get to meet Craig’s parents or brother. They had all passed away by the time I met him,” Jackson says. “Getting to see videos of them and hear their voices really helped me understand how far

they’d come and their love for all this.

We’re looking forward to highlighting those memories and so many others leading up to Barrett-Jackson’s 50-year anniversary, which is on the horizon.”

Barrett-Jackson looks forward to celebrating its golden jubilee in 2021, which will include revisiting the company’s history.

“I feel privileged to work every day in an industry that is rewarding, exciting and dynamic,” Jackson says. “Over the years, I’ve worked in different industries, but the passion, commitment and energy in the collector car industry is such a gift.

And I feel incredibly privileged to play a role in it.” 

ark Scalpone has tinkered with engines since he was 10 years old. He started with lawn mower engines, disassembling them and putting them back together with his uncle. Sometimes, he says, he wasn’t so successful.

He honed his skills by his teenage years and subsequently founded Vintage Iron and Restoration in 2004 in Apache Junction. Now it’s based in the Airpark, where he’s found success.

Vintage Iron is a full-service and maintenance facility that upgrades and installs items on muscle, antique, vintage, classic and custom show cars. Scalpone and his techs work with customers on their projects, keeping the clients’ budget as the benchmark.

“I always tell customers, ‘If you have a car here, come in like you own the place.

They should feel at home,’” Scalpone says.

“Just walk in and talk to the tech. We’re not hiding anything. If there’s a question about something, ask it and we’ll figure out what it is.”

In other words, most customers don’t just pass their keys to Vintage Iron and Restoration's 16-person staff and leave. They become family.

“It’s way better out here,” he says. “I was doing general work at the time. I was out in the cold and the snow. I wanted to go somewhere warm.”

Scalpone admits it’s taken some time to convince himself that this isn’t a hobby.

It’s now his job.

“I like it so much that it’s just part of what I do,” he says. “I’d rather be out in the shop working than doing any paperwork.”

Four years after founding Vintage Iron and Restoration, Scalpone was hit with the crash of 2008.

“We did anything and everything to keep it alive,” he says. “That’s when this morphed into a classic car repair. Then, about five or six years ago, people started spending money again to build cars.”

His business has since then gone from 0 to 60.

When asked about his favorite project, Scalpone quotes one of his peers, Dave Kindig from “Bitchin’ Rides.”

“He says, ‘The next thing I’m going to build,’” he says. “There’s a lot of truth to that because you’re excited about the car and when it’s done, you’re like, ‘OK, let’s move on to the next one.’” 

Driving MBA is helping students master the road

The defensive driving lab is more advanced. It has 40 scenarios that introduce the students to hazard recognition, the dangers of intersections, red-light runners, skidding and adverse weather conditions.

DrivingMBA has graduated more than 15,000 students from the program since opening its doors over a decade ago.

Research shows motor vehicle crashes are the No. 1 cause of death among teenagers in the United States, she says.

Most of these fatal collisions occur within six months of a driver obtaining a license.

“We are firm believers in the power of ‘experiential learning,’” Wojtczak says.

“Our programs are designed for novice drivers, professional drivers, mature drivers, and drivers who need special attention. Simulation is a perfect tool to allow novice and experienced drivers to make mistakes and learn from them in a safe environment. In the ‘real world,’ that isn’t possible without significant consequences.”

When DrivingMBA opened in 2003, it was near the Ice Den before moving to a building on Bahia Drive. When COVID-19 hit, the company was forced to downsize due to employees working at home. “ We o p e r a t e with a much smaller footprint,” she says. “Glendale has two simulation labs, one manager ’s office and that’s it.

“We used to do in-house classes with 12 to 15 students. We had to put it all online.

We don’t need this big classroom that we’re using as a waiting room.”

DrivingMBA is opening a second facility to provide DrivingMBA teaches beginners the its drivers training fundamentals in a simulation lab, in to students in the vehicles and through online classes.

aria Wojtczak believes in the power of education, especially when teens are working toward their driver ’s license. She founded DrivingMBA, which has offices in the Scottsdale Airpark and Glendale, to make sure folks of all ages had top-notch training.

“For any family considering registering their teen for driver training, this is the time to do it,” Wojtczak says. “We learned early on that standard driving training isn’t enough to keep Valley teens safe on the roads. Our mission is to save lives, and we believe in the power of education and providing our students training and tools based on research and science to help them become competent, responsible and safe drivers for the rest of their lives.”

Recreational sales began at the Scottsdale Airpark location on January 28, and since then, many of the location’s “core” customers are “ecstatic,” he says.

Many have voiced their excitement about the fact that purchasing marijuana has become “more of a social experience,” one in which even mom or grandma can join, he adds.

Sol Flower wants to improve everyone’s quality of life

ol Flower dispensaries’ mission is to empower its employees and customers to live their lives with “soul.”

CEO Pankaj Talwar says Sol Flower accomplishes this by helping folks with anxiety, muscle aches and digestive issues with cannabis. Then, he adds, people can wake up every day feeling “fully empowered” and ready to “seize the day.”

The employees at his dispensaries are no exception.

Working in a dispensary can be “stressful” and “very fast paced,” he explains. However, cannabis helps many of his employees find the mental clarity they need to stay present in the moment so they may live their lives with “soul” and exude this energy within each customer interaction.

Talwar is the head of vertically integrated Copperstate Farms, which established Sol Flower dispensaries in 2019.

Scottsdale Airpark’s Sol Flower, located off North Hayden Road and North 82nd Street, is now a dual-licensed dispensary. That means it’s allowed to conduct recreational and medical marijuana sales within its facility.

Talwar says he “loves” the Scottsdale Airpark location, saying it’s located at “such an amazing crossroads” between commercial businesses and residential communities.

However, the location is in need of more signage, he says.

It took almost a week for the location to formally begin recreational sales after its dual license was approved on January 22.

Dozens of other newly licensed competitors opened for recreational sales in the meantime “but we were comfortable waiting,” he says. The dispensary had a list of state-regulated measures to implement before it could open its doors for recreational sales.

Sol Flower’s staff and marketing team had to secure child-resistant bags and update its payment system to collect the additional 16% tax for recreational sales.

The dispensary also had to transition all the employees’ dispensary agent cards to the new dual-purpose facility agent cards, which Talwar says was a “herculean effort.”

The fingerprint of each employee had to be resubmitted along with the state-required $300 fee per employee.

“All the credit goes to the Sol Flower retail dispensary team and the HR team for making this happen at such a timely, rapid-fire basis,” he says.

The dispensary is serious about following the regulations around Proposition 207, he says. It wanted to train all of its employees properly.

New inventory locations also had to be implemented to ensure that medical marijuana products were “segregated” from recreational products, Talwar says.

It’s “really important” to take extra precautions to ensure that a recreational buyer doesn’t accidentally get their hands on an item only permitted for medical marijuana sales.

Recreational buyers are limited to no more than 100 milligrams of THC per package of edible marijuana products. However, medical marijuana cardholders can purchase edibles with a much higher potency.

Mixing recreational and medical marijuana customers together created some concern about potential long lines and wait times, Talwar says.

The dispensary took steps to mitigate this concern by creating separate lines, he says.

Medical patients also have the ability to get their products delivered to their homes.

Sol Flower sets itself apart from the rest by placing customer service “at the top of everything,” he says. “We are constantly monitoring how fast we can get service needs met.”

It’s important to get experienced “cannabis connoisseurs” in and out the door as efficiently as possible, he says. However, “We want to be able to provide to the cannabis curious and the cannabis newbies the time to ask a lot of questions because it is overwhelming.

The dispensary trains employees to handle “certain situations with care and the right level of empathy,” he adds.

Copperstate also differentiates itself from competitors by being “vertically integrated,” Talwar says. Copperstate is “blessed” to have a 40-acre greenhouse in Snowflake.

“We’re one of the largest greenhouses in the country for cannabis — and we have it right here in Arizona.”

All the marijuana plants are sungrown without the use of harsh chemicals and pesticides. The greenhouse utilizes ladybugs to serve as natural predators to control the many aphids that “enjoy eating our leaves,” he says.

“We let the ladybugs get a nice full stomach, and eventually they fly out through the vents, but they still usually get a few days of feasting and that’s all we need.”

Copperstate buys a million ladybugs each week, Talwar says.

However, “we’re not perfect,” he says. Occasionally, “the buds don’t look as perfect as if we used harsh chemicals.”

Growing marijuana indoors under artificial light also helps to give buds a nicer appearance; however, all plants in the Copperstate grow house are sun-grown.

“We are very natural. When it gets hot, we don’t have AC sucking up a lot of energy. We open up vents, and the only way our plants grow is through the sun.

“We live and die by what the sun provides.”

Copperstate and Sol Flower take their natural methods of growing marijuana very seriously, he says. Their system of vertical integration provides both variety and scale so that Talwar and his team know “exactly what’s being sold.”

It also allows them to provide their products at a reasonable price, Talwar explains.

However, since recreational sales began, the demand for products has “really skyrocketed,” he says. Many dispensaries are stockpiling to be prepared.

This intense demand combined with a new testing regulation put into effect at the end of last year has caused lab facilities to become “overwhelmed,” he explains.

“We’ve had delays in getting our lab test results back,” he says. “We can only put on the shelf what has been certified.”

Sol Flower seeks to provide a “safer alternative for people who may have been buying illegally through the black market,” he explains. The passage of Proposition 207 was “a wonderful, symbolic moment.”

The recreational legalization of marijuana was eagerly sought out by the majority of Arizonans, he says, mentioning how it was approved by 60% of the state’s voters.

For his employees, “it helps remove the stigma that sometimes some people feel by being in the industry.”

“It is such a historic symbolic victory because it’s a full validation of their passions and it helps legitimize their chosen career choice.” 

Uncorking some less common kinds of wine

hances are that you’ve tried a cabernet sauvignon, pinot grigio or chardonnay in your day. You’ve perhaps even enjoyed a Champagne, merlot or pinot noir.

Beyond the most common wine varietals on the market today, however, there are several dozen other options, with something that will please every palate. Here is a look at some of our favorite less common kinds of wine, each worth a sample and sip when you feel like something new.

2018 Priest Ranch Grenache Blanc Developed in northern Spain and now a showstopper in Yountville, California, this is a full-bodied white wine made from the red grenache grape known for its alluring aroma and higher alcohol percentage than most other white wines. This one delights with white peach, melons and honeysuckle on the nose, then explodes with flavors of stone fruit and citrus to the taste. $22

Hill Family Estates 2019 Albariño Like Grenache Blanc, the albariño grape made its way into wine bottles first in Spain, but in the Southern Iberian Peninsula growing regions.

Refreshing and zippy with a tart acidity and flowery notes, this gorgeous bottle is the perfect introduction to the varietal. But be careful, its mouthwatering green apple notes and hint of lemon-lime go down very easy on a patio with friends. $65

Clif Lede 2018 Claret This is a tricky one, as there is no claret grape.

Historically, it is actually the term — originally from Great Britain — used for heavy Bordeaux wines out of France. Today, it is used stateside to describe red wines made in the Bordeaux style as it is with this award winner. Jammy with hints of blueberry at fi rst, there are also more earthy elements, including cinnamon and cumin and a long finish with a touch of red apple. $48 2018 Gemstone Cabernet Franc Though similarly named, cabernet franc has slightly thinner skin than cabernet sauvignon. It also has less tannins and more of a perfume and herbaceousness to the nose. This is a perfect expression for someone new to this type of wine, as it is medium bodied and explodes with strawberries and plums on the nose before giving way to layers of red fruit in each sip. $125

Handwritten Tawny, 10-Year The happiest way to end any meal, tawny is a type of port wine and made from red grapes.

Extremely sweet with nuanced nuttiness, H a n d w r i t t e n re a l l y does this varietal right.

The roasted and toasted caramel notes with darker hints of cocoa and coffee in each sip are heavenly, juxtaposed with the overall sweetness in the bottle. Insider tip: Pour it over ice cream. $75 2016 Goosecross Petit Petite So, is this type of wine petit syrah? Petite verdot? The answer: it is both. Petit Petite is a blend of both big wines, resulting in anything but a petit wine. Dark and seductive, Goosecross’ version — nicknamed the inkyblack monster — is a triumph of bold black fruit, cassis and leather that will leave even the pickiest of palates pleased. $95 Shafer Vineyards Relentless Syrah This wine is aptly named — and even copyrighted — given it is how you will feel about scoring case after case of this syrah, which has a bit of petite sirah as well.

While grown all around the world and beloved for its dark skin and full-bodied richness, syrah is still less common in everyday wine drinkers’ vocabularies than cabernet, merlot or pinot noir. But it shouldn’t be, because syrahs — especially this one — are deep, powerful wines bursting with everything from

black plum, herbs and vanilla to leather, herbs and stone, all in the same sip. $95 Mira Jimmy D’s Red Blend 2016 Ever wanted to design your own custom wine? Those who make red and white blends are essentially doing just that: taking what they think will work and dreaming up wholly new flavor profiles. This particular blend is a beautiful beast made from 47% syrah, 33% cabernet sauvignon and 20% petit verdot.

Nutty and spicy, yet with raspberry, black cherry and plum, it’s a truly unique blend of the best of the best. $75

Chandon Pinot Meunier, Carneros 2017 You’ve likely had pinot meunier before — you just didn’t know it. Dating back to the 16th century, it is one of three grapes grown widely in Champagne, France, and it is a key varietal in true Champagne.

It stuns on its own here, in all of its darkberried glory. Expect a tremendous smoothness and fruit-forwardness here, especially plum, black cherry and tons of berry notes. $40

Silver Trident 2018 Playing with Fire Proprietary Red Blend This small winery takes pride in breaking the rules by experimenting (aka playing with fire) with different fermentations, blends and barrels. This showstopper is the result of playing with a blend of malbec and cabernet franc. Given its parent grapes, the blend has a smooth and creamy start with concentrated flavors upon sipping and a spicy finish as well as notes of dark berries and even chocolate. $48 Stewart Cellars 2018 Tartan Question: When is a cabernet sauvignon not just the standard sip we’ve all tried dozens of times? Answer: When Stewart blends the cabernet with a little merlot, malbec and petit verdot as it does in this supple, earthy take.

The chocolate, cherry and pepper aromas here will dance through your nose, and the lush finish will have your mouth watering while waiting for the next sip. $25 

Pita Jungle predicts opportunities with first food truck

ince it was founded in 1994, Pita Jungle has grown to 24 locations across the Phoenix area, Flagstaff and Tucson. To continue its expansion and provide healthy options to a growing customer base here in the Valley, the Mediterranean chain is taking a different angle with the launch of its new food truck.

“Everyone has been kind of seduced by the notion of food trucks, and that had started a few years ago when food trucks came out of the woodwork as a new thing,” says Bassel Osmani, Pita Jungle co-founder. “Chefs were going on food trucks. Suddenly, it wasn’t just typical ‘food truck’ food.”

Citing a shift from typical “festival food” such as hot dogs to “gourmet” options, Osmani realizes there are opportunities that come with mobile food, especially in light of recent events.

“Now, in the wake of COVID — or while we’re still in COVID — we realized that’s something that we can use in several

“If nothing else, I mean, that food truck will be a very useful tool just to shape up and fortify our catering operations,” Osmani says. “And then if things work out, the sky’s the limit, right?”

While the goal is to eventually have a fleet of food trucks, Osmani considers the first one “the proverbial wetting the whistle.” It all depends upon results. “We’ll take it from there,” he says.

Beyond the obvious scenarios, Osmani is open to other opportunities for the food truck. That includes a future in which there could be a drive-thru lane, something he says other restaurants have had success with during the pandemic.

“Imagine you have physical location and you put the truck next to it and you create a traffic loop where cars drive up to the food truck, place an order on a microphone or by a human attendant in a parking lot, and then they drive through it and pick up,” he describes.

Another opportunity could be going so far as to put food trucks in more remote locations, giving people access to healthy food by such areas as rest stops.

“I thought about the notion of going somewhere on the I-10 or the I-8 between Phoenix and San Diego, Phoenix and LA, and putting food trucks there,” Osmani notes.

And while he emphasizes it’s not in the works, a “summon” feature is on his wish list so the Pita Jungle food truck could target highpitajungle.com demand areas.

Rolling Out a New Concept Ling’s Wok Shop was inspired by the pandemic

One step is the Asian fusion offshoot Ling’s Wok Shop, which is slated to open at Hayden Peak Crossing at Thompson Peak Parkway and Hayden Road in the spring, early summer. It will combine the ease and speed of a fast-casual restaurant with a full-service dining establishment.

“Ling & Louie’s is known for creating flavorful dishes using traditional Asian cooking techniques and ingredients in nontraditional ways,” says Banquil, the company’s president and CEO. “At Ling’s Wok Shop, diners will enjoy our most popular menu items, plus a host of bold new flavors from across Asia.”

Among these will be Ling’s seafood hot pot, which features scallops, salmon and jumbo shrimp simmered in a green curry-coconut broth. The menu also will include clean, light and healthy wok-fired creations accentuated with the restaurant’s 15 signature sauces.

Banquil says operating Ling & Louie’s through the pandemic made him and his team look at their operations. The restaurants were just as busy as they were before the pandemic.

“We had lower operating costs, and we’re more profitable,” he says. “I thought, ‘Why not make this the model going forward?’

That’s where this direction has taken us.

We’ve been looking to expand Ling & Louie’s since I took over the brand in the beginning of 2019.”

The restaurant will join Pure Sushi, Tavern Americana, Juan Jaime’s Tacos and Tequila, Nékter Juice Bar and Starbucks at the 145,000-square-foot center. The fully occupied center boasts a mix of local and national tenants and is anchored by a 75,000-square-foot Fry’s Signature Supermarket.

Banquil calls the Grayhawk location “the perfect spot” and says it was time to “pull the trigger on this.”

“The style of service is going to change,”

he says. “During lunch, it’s going to be a fast-casual restaurant with counter service.

Guests will place their order and we’ll bring it out to you.

“Around happy hour and segueing into dinner, we’ll convert to a full-service space. I keep looking at the demographics of the area, with the businesses popping up and all the construction. We feel a majority of the guests will come in for lunch — get in, get out and get back to work or the kids. We want to make it easy and approachable.”

Rooftops are also plentiful in the area, so Banquil says he feels having a full-service Asian restaurant there is “super beneficial.”

“It’s really lacking in that area,” he says.

“We’re going to take a lot of our familiar favorites at Ling & Louie’s, where we

have 40 sauces we make in-house with proprietary recipes.

“We’re going to use those familiar flavors but present them in a healthier, cleaner and a bit more modern way than we do at Ling & Louie’s. Guests will say, ‘This is orange chicken, but it feels cleaner, healthier and it tastes fresher. You’re full but you don’t have to take a nap.”

Banquil worked for the original owner for 10 1/2 years before he approached him about taking over the company as a whole.

He treated Ling & Louie’s as his “baby,” and the adventure has not only been satisfying but super exciting, he adds.

“Working through the pandemic as a second-year business owner was super stressful,” he says. “It was such an educational experience. It reignited everything and gave us the passion to move forward and know, even though we were in the most adverse condition, we’re a really strong brand. We think we can grow and take this to the next level.”

In late February, Banquil was preparing to submit the construction plans for Ling’s Wok Shop to the city of Scottsdale. His wife, Mariam Malak, is designing the interior.

“She’s helping with the overall look and feel,” he says “We’re getting all that squared away. In doing this, she not only gets more exposure to the restaurant world, which is where we met, but I’m getting exposure to her world.” 

Scouting has long history in Scottsdale

By Joan Fudala ountless Scottsdalians — past and present, homegrown and transplants — have fond memories of their days in the nation’s three major youth groups — Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Camp Fire (Girls).

These organizations can trace their Scottsdale troops/groups’ roots to the 1920s. Although the youth groups have different mottos, uniforms and structure, they’ve shared facilities, field trips, community service projects and fun for nearly a century in Scottsdale.

Let’s scout out a few items of local lore:  The Boy Scouts of America was founded February 8, 1910; Camp Fire Girls was established March 17, 1910; Girl Scouts was founded March 12, 1912.  “Scout executive Hiscox of the Roosevelt district with scout men from Phoenix will conduct a scout installation for the Scottsdale Boy Scout organization Friday evening at the high school. An invitation has been issued to the affair to all parents of boys of scout age. Refreshments will be served by the local PTA. Following is a list of Boy Scouts: Frank Burleson, scribe; Theodore White and Edward Tiewell, patrol leaders; John Pierce, Frank Bennett, Paschal Brown,

Among the early members of Scottsdale’s Camp Fire Girls group was Thelma Steiner, who served as Scottsdale’s assistant clerk in the 1960s/’70s and was an active member of the Scottsdale Historical Society.  Scottsdale Boy Scout troop No. 70 was represented at the Arizona State Fair by Burson Donn and Dick Van Benschoten, according to the November 14, 1929, Arizona Republican.  During World War II, Scottsdale scouts and Camp Fire Girls took on many responsibilities to aid the homefront and support men and women in the armed services. Boy Scouts collected wastepaper in a big drive in February 1944. Camp Fire Girls sewed for the Red Cross through the Valleywide “Service for Victory” program and gathered magazines for disabled veterans. Girl Scouts tended Victory Gardens and collected costume jewelry (for soldiers to use in overseas areas where some local populations had no use for money but did like jewelry and trinkets).

The Scottsdale area also gained a “scout celeb-

rity” during the war, according to the January 30, 1944, Arizona Republic: “It is strange to think the national Girl Scout wartime program and the Papago Park prisoners-ofwar camp are both directed from the same home here, but it is true. When Col. Alan H. Means took charge of the (POW) camp, Mrs. Means moved here too. She is the national president of the Girl Scouts of America.”  “I was a Camp Fire girl in the 1940s,” explained Eleanor Mowry Brierley, who was born and raised in Scottsdale, graduated from Scottsdale High and continues to serve as treasurer of the Scottsdale Historical Society. “Mrs. Austin was our leader. We did many crafts, but none stand out. What I do remember big time is going to summer camp in Prescott. Leaving on a big greyhound bus from downtown Phoenix, going the long way into Prescott. Remember this was pre-Black Canyon Freeway. The camp was southeast of Prescott and was a Camp Fire camp for a month then a Girl Scout camp. It was called Camp Wamatochick. Lots of games, food in a ginormous dining hall. Long hikes with snack lunches and blisters on the feet and the prerequisite campfire sing-along. Sleeping in cabins with four sets of bunks. Well, not so much sleeping. And outhouses with many, many daddy long legs spiders. I loved it so much.”

In 1948, Scottsdale Boy Scout Troop  101 worked with the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce to survey town residents and businesses. Data collected was used to publish a directory and to establish the level of interest in obtaining natural gas service for Scottsdale. The boys also sold subscriptions to the new Scottsdale Progress newspaper

the beneficiaries of Scottsdale’s annual Community Chest/Red Feather Drive.  Members of Scottsdale’s Post 44, American Legion voted unanimously to sponsor a Boy Scout troop. According to the October 8, 1954, Scottsdale Progress, “a committee composed of William H. Bright, Robert Yount, George Cavalliere and George Botsford was appointed to represent the post in organizing the troop.” Since completion in 1948, the Post facility on First Street welcomed many scout meetings to be held there.  Goldwater’s Department Store supported and sponsored scouts and Camp Fire Girls in a variety of ways. The local store chain ran ads in the 1940s that were the Little Bear Girl Scout News, and held fashion shows at places such as the Westward Ho or Biltmore Hotels to benefit the youth groups and their summer camps. Scottsdale’s Bank of Douglas used its regular ad in October 1951 in the Scottsdale Progress to salute the Girl Scouts and Camp Fire Girls, saying, “Each of these great movements has helped make healthy, happy competent citizens out of three generations of American girls. We wish them every success in the future.”  In 1950, Alan Rousch of Scottsdale’s Boy Scout Troop 101 received the “God and Country Award” for service in the Methodist Church. He was the first scout in the Camelback district to receive the award, and only the eighth in the entire Roosevelt Council.  Throughout the 1950s, the Tower House of the old Adobe Guest Ranch, which had been purchased by the Civic Coordinat-

ing Council and turned into Scottsdale’s volunteer-run Community Center, was also called the Scout House. Girl Scouts met there and also held a summer day camp.  Since their beginnings in Scottsdale, the three youth organizations have participated in numerous community service projects.

In 1950, the Odako group of Camp Fire Girls hiked up Mummy Mountain to gather tiny cactuses to make miniature gardens for children in the Arizona Crippled Children’s Hospital. During the polio epidemic of the 1940s/’50s, Girl Scouts participated in the March of Dimes fundraising effort. In 1956, Girl Scouts of Troop 371 made mittens to be sent to Hungarian refugee children. In 1957, Brownies and Girl Scouts planted trees donated by the Scottsdale Jaycees around the Little Red Schoolhouse, which was then serving as Scottsdale Town Hall. Blue Birds at Kachina Elementary made toys, which they donated to the children’s ward at County Hospital. The Scottsdale Association of Girl Scouts held a district sing at Saguaro High in April 1970, an event held every year as a service project.  Selling things to raise money for outings and for charity has also been a hallmark of Scottsdale’s youth groups: Girl Scout cookies and calendars, Camp Fire Girls candy, Boy Scouts Christmas trees and peanuts.  “I was in Cub Scouts and Webelos from third grade through sixth grade (early 1960s),” recalled Don Hadder, a graduate of Coronado High School, former city of Scottsdale planning executive and past president/current board member of the Scottsdale Historical Society. “My mother was our den mother. I collected a lot of badges, made crafts (I still have some bookends I made), and went on fieldtrips (one was to the AJ Bayless museum on Indian School Road just west of Central Avenue. Then we went around the corner to the Carnation ice cream plant afterward). I made two of the wooden race cars (got first place with one) and the wind-up balsa wood rockets that went on a tight string across the room. One year, we went to a big Jamboree with troops from across the Valley.

It was held on what was then a vacant field at the southeast corner of Scottsdale and Osborn roads. Various groups made log towers, a stage, etc. There must have been over 200 tents across the field, from small to group sized. The big highlight was a massive bonfire.”  Scout/Camp Fire Girl field trips, outings and events have changed with the times. Scouts and media reports list among the favorites: Sphinx Date Ranch (1948), Ice Land Skating Rink, Legend City, Arizona

State Fair, fashion shows, father/ daughter dinners, hikes, campouts, cookouts, Grand Canyon trips and marching in Parada del Sol parade.

Camp Fire Girls of the Ingleside district earned a week in Hawaii, according to an article in the June 10, 1975, Scottsdale Daily Progress.

“Since September, four girls of the eighth-grade group have put their time and energy toward one goal: to make enough money for a trip to Hawaii… ‘We never quit,’ said Wendy Springborn to explain how they had done it…The girls earned $1,800 through bake sales, rummage sales, selling things at park and swap, selling stationery and collecting newspapers and aluminum cans.”

In more recent years, Eagle  Scouts have undertaken projects in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and youth groups have continued to participate in patriotic ceremonies and community events as ushers and organizers. For many years, Brownies, Girl Scouts, Cub and Boy Scouts, Blue Birds and Camp Fire Girls have been invited by the mayor and city council to lead the pledge of allegiance before city council meetings.
