A Grand Open

A

t last, I made it to the elite and (for me) elusive skyboxes at the Waste Management Phoenix Open! In fact, I made it to four skyboxes between Jan. 30 and Feb. 2—including a day at the infamously fun sixteenth hole. As if that weren’t enough of a thrill, one of the fabulous Thunderbird hosts whisked my sister and me about the grounds for an orientation tour, chuckling as we clung to the golf cart seat and our beverages for dear life. (See photo.)

I was curious if business would truly be afoot among all the corporate merrymaking, and speaking for me personally, it definitely was. For instance, after hobnobbing with adjacent suite dwellers, I got the skinny on The Golf Tank, an intriguing company that keeps such a low profile, I may never have discovered them otherwise.

Thunderbird Suites Joins Best Western Plus Brand The historic Scottsdale Thunderbird Suites recently converted to a Best Western Plus hotel. “We have completed an extensive renovation and will be a great addition to the Best Western Plus brand,” said Dale Valentine. The hotel, adjacent to Scottsdale Airport at 7515 E. Butherus Drive, was constructed as an inn by Ann and Bill Arthur in 1985 to serve pilots, corporate visitors and leisure guests. 187-Unit Project Slated for SE Corner of Mayo Blvd. and Scottsdale Road The P. B. Bell Companies recently closed on land to build Cascàd, a luxury community in North Scottsdale consisting of 187 units in four- and five-story building configurations. hirteen years ago, the Knights of Columbus from Our Lady of Joy Parish in Carefree had a vision to create a fundraising event to help the less fortunate. From these modest beginnings, it has blossomed to become one of the most successful fundraising golf events in Arizona. The event, now called Golf-ForeCharity, has raised more than $1.2 million over its 12-year history.

The 2013 event netted $170,000: $130,000 for St. Vincent de Paul and $40,000 to other local charities including the Foothills Food Bank, St. Charles Mission School (Apache Reservation), Hospice of the Valley, Maggie’s Place, Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona, Camelot Therapeutic Horsemanship and the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Corporate sponsors, 204 golfers, nearly 400 dinner guests, tee sponsors, auction donors, auction bidders, raffle ticket buyers and volunteers all play a key role every year.

“In this time of economic stress, what St. Vincent de Paul, the tournment’s primary beneficiary, is able to provide is extraordinary,” said Dennis Gougion, who helps organize the event. Got an idea for a golf product or service you hope will take the industry by storm and make you a fortune? The team at the ‘Tank’ will know if your baby is a sweet stroke of genius … or a whiff.

Be forewarned, though, you may find these guys are tougher in their familiar rough than ABC TV’s Shark Tank investors.

fter 20 years immersed in the golf world—doing everything from managing tour-players to product branding and strategy—Tim Ummel describes himself as a “golf generalist.” He stands in The Golf Tank’s private showroom, dips into the jar of salted nuts on the bar, and explains how he and his partners almost accidentally created their idea incubator inside a space that’s proving irresistible to the sport’s movers and shakers.

First of all, he clarifies, the Airpark “Tank” was born from an appreciation and love for the ABC hit show Shark Tank, where entrepreneurs present concepts from every corner imaginable and vie for investor backing. “The fact that we are constantly pitched ideas in our day-to-day activites, we thought, why not take that concept and focus on one vertical: golf,” Ummel says.

The partners, who boast about 85 years of combined golf experience, had already secured a building east of the Scottsdale Airport runway and committed to gutting and renovating the former body shop.

“We had the space and the footprint,” Ummel says, “and [we realized] we could buy one golf company or create a holding company that can buy multiple entities that we can invest in.”

Secreted behind tinted glass walls and a roll-up door, the resulting “Tank” is physically a showstopper: cool gray brick, spiral staircases, velvety greens, cushy couches, steel framed office loft, stocked bar, flatscreen TVs and the primo golf diversions the company already represents in some way tempt from every corner. Upstairs off the lobby, are swanky offices and a conference room, and hidden in the rear lies a a cavernous vaulted garage with gleaming Pebble Tec floors, ideal for expanded functions and deliveries.

“We said, let’s build a place that people walk in and go ‘Wow,’” Ummel says. “It was built specifically for that purpose, to give entrepreneurs a type of space they could feel good about it—an incubator for new ideas, a SkySong [the ASU Innovation Center] for golf, if you will. And on its own, it’s morphed into a great venue for private parties and events, which can be booked on our website.”

Unlike the show Shark Tank, which publicly seeks out pitches, The Golf Tank embraces a low profile, counting on the team’s extensive connections to bring in essentially pre-vetted ideas, usually

through referral. And like bees to honey, golf’s insider population stroll through the doors; caddies on Pro-Am tours, players, coaches, friends of friends. In the middle of the Scottsdale Airpark News photo shoot, Business Development Director Mike Wagner ducks away to greet a first-time visitor who’s decided to check out the tank after jetting into Scottsdale Airport on other business: it’s the inventor of the first golf bag with built-in legs, a modification that revolutionized the equipment

industry in 1986 and is still spoken of in tones of awe.

And though Ummel declines to elaborate on his relationship with Tiger Woods, he’s wearing a golf shirt that bears the logo of Punta Brava, a private, invitation-only golf club featuring the first Tiger Woodsdesigned golf course in the world, being developed at a site in Baja, California. All Ummel will say is the Tank is in the “same facility that houses the development project for Punta Brava.”

Even The Golf Tank website is anemic by design, with simple fields for wouldbe entrepreneurs to submit their ideas.

“As a comparison, if you look at the world of tennis, there aren’t that many products that you need,” explains Ummel. “Whereas in golf, there are mental aids, equipment, clothing, technology. Because of that, there are no shortage of people wanting to pitch their ideas and get things off the ground.”

Once an inventor does get in the door, they get an hour with Wagner and Mike Helfrich, cofounder and managing partner. “We’re the firewall,” says Wagner.

The hopefuls, who arrive in different levels of preparedness, make their pitches or ask for guidance on how to take the next step. “They say, ‘Here is what I see and why my baby should grow up,” Ummel says, adding the team can usually tell within a few minutes if there’s any potential for a truly “disruptive” concept or not.

In the last year, the Tank team has seen a lot of pitches and is already focusing on a select few, whether via acquisition, investment or partnership. Now that they’re committed to developing and marketing a few concepts, they’re even choosier with new ideas. About 10 partners and support staff lend a hand in some fashion at the Tank, and business is brisk.

“Very often we find people come to us, and they think what they need is money, and the reality is what they need is a plan, some strategic thinking for how to grow— and certainly some introductions,” Wagner says. “I would think one of our strongest assets is our Rolodex, our ability to call up a variety of industry assets, whether they be media people, celebrity spokespeople, or industry veterans who do design.”

Ummel agrees. “That’s a big part of our strength. Twenty years in our industry has made that a very big Rolodex.”

The Tank also cherishes its partnership with Airpark neighbor Troon Golf. As the largest golf management company in the world, Troon is in a position to recommend products to its clients. “It’s a powerful tool, and amongst all the noise in the golf industry, it’s nice to have partners like that who can help us move the needle,” says Wagner.

PushNPutt Back Story: Last year, the PushNPutt won best new product at the PGA Merchandise Show. The concept is simple—push down on the top of the flag's metal pole and the balls pop out of the cup, levitated by a steel disk. No more bending down, no more grasping around for retrieval. Partners at The Golf Tank took note: As the first pin-set improvement for practice greens since 1958, this was truly the kind of “disruptive” product that could electrify the market. It definitely had “Doh! Why didn’t I think of that?” appeal. But the inventor—a golf fan and player from North Carolina— wasn’t ready to sell his company. Then one day he came to the Tank in Scottsdale and

forged a relationship with the partners. “We were able to walk him through four versions of prototypes,” Tim Ummel, the Tank’s cofounder and managing partner, says of the months-long collaboration. The Golf Tank is partnering with the inventor on PushNPutt.

Power Posture Pro (P3 Pro) Back Story: A PGA TOUR player came across this machine designed to engage major muscle groups and improve athletes’ posture and motion efficiency. He introduced its inventor— the Australia Olympic team’s coach for motor movement—to The Golf Tank folks more than a year ago. “It allows people ages 6 to 65 to train their body to be in the greatest posture for a golf swing,” says Tim Ummel, cofounder of the Tank, which ultimately opted to partner with the inventor on the venture. “If we do it right, we can help the game of golf, and help it to grow,” Ummel adds. Prototypes for consumers as well as trainers, physical therapists and other prospective commercial customers are underway. “We’re hoping to launch in April,” says Mike Helfrich, cofounder of the Tank. “That’s when

the Masters Tournament happens, and when most of the world says ‘this is golf season,’ and they’re very excited about it.” Because the P3 Pro’s benefits are universal to any sport, the Tank team envisions a wide and growing market.

How It Works: Users step onto the machine, find their hips, bend and get into a solid posture position. Then they perform a series of moves/drills that train them in proper movements. The goal is to make good posture a habit.

Resistance is built into the sliding pads and adjustable for each individual.

Stabilizer muscles work off core muscles, and when users get into a bad position, they have to correct themselves or step off the pads. The Golf Tank has developed a “five minutes a day for 30 day” program.

High Definition Golf Simulator Product Showcase

Back Story: When The Golf Tank partners began crafting their Airpark facility, they wanted to include a simulator for entertainment purposes. Cofounder Mike Helfrich knew of the High Definition Golf Simulator because of his equipment and technology background. The Tank’s custom installation—a striking feature usually set to display Pebble Beach’s famous seventh hole—so impressed the manufacturer, the company asked the Scottsdale group to be its Southwest distributor and flagship showroom.

Specs: Most golf simulators are created through computer graphics, but this one incorporates actual photographs of entire golf courses, which are stitched together in high definition with the help of topographic maps. From the comfort of home, a golfer can be driving toward a hole on Pebble Beach, birds chirping, trees swaying and ocean surf crashing; a moment later, with a quick switch of the main menu, he can be halfway around the world at St. Andrews in Scotland playing the actual contours of that course.

The simulator allows for full golf instruction via cameras, it tracks myriad data and can be used as a home theater, etc. “This is the only one that blows away the visual,” says Helfrich. “It’s a very powerful tool for instruction and fitting vs. just gaming.” The simulators start at $40,000, depending on accessories.

The Only Green

Mike Wagner of The Golf Tank says he’s a “big fan” of how The Only Green improves a golfer’s putting game.

Back Story: This indoor putting green is considered the flagship product of The Golf Tank’s holding company and was its first acquisition. Tim Ummel, cofounder and managing partner of The Golf Tank, had known the inventor of The Only Green for about 15 years and consistently noted the green’s excellent reputation among golf pros and aficionados. “It’s interesting, because it’s the only one of its kind. There is no competitor in its price category,” he says. When ‘the Tank’ came together, Ummel and the managing partners saw an opportunity to “buy the company correctly” and take it to the next level of tweaking, marketing and distribution. “We knew in their life cycle that they were ready to move on to that next chapter,” he says of the initial owner. “Timing is everything.” The Tank is now both owner and manufacturer of the green, and works with distributors.

Golf Law? Yes, Golf Law!

T

here is indeed a topic in the law known as “Golf Law.” In fact, the American Bar Association has published the second edition of The Little Book of Golf Law, authored by John H. Minan, a lawyer, a professor of law at the University of San Diego, and an avid golfer.

Many golfers have had the same nightmare: their wicked slice sails toward a row of house as they cringe, fearing an ensuing window crash or, worse yet, a blood-curdling scream resulting in a lawsuit.

The success of such a lawsuit will depend on the answer to several questions: Did the homeowners assume the risk of errant golf balls because of their proximity to the course? Did the covenants, conditions and restrictions for the developments contain a warning about the possibility of property damage or personal injury? How aware was the golfer of his tendency to slice?

Cases involving golfers and golf courses touch most every subject within the law.

In the area of torts such as negligence, there are cases that dealt with liability for a failure to yell “fore” before a shot, the liability of a golf course for negligent design that creates an arguably unsafe condition, a duty to warn of lightning when the course employs a lightningwarning system or should it simply advise ­—to paraphrase the famous Lee Trevino quip—that one should hold up his one iron since no one, not even Mother Nature, can hit one.

Product liability cases have been brought because of the defective design of a golf cart. Careless driving of a golf cart has resulted in numerous negligence cases seeking recovery for personal injury.

In fact, our firm just successfully handled such a case, one that had resulted in serious injury. But let’s say the driver has

no insurance—can the injured rely on uninsured motorist coverage or is a golf cart not a motor vehicle under insurance law?

Thus, contract law too has been brought into the world of golf. The sponsor of a tournament had to part with a Chevrolet Beretta when its offer of that prize neglected to advise golfers that the hole-in-one to win the car had to occur during a tournament that ended two days before a lucky golfer made a one-in-20,000 shot. Perhaps the sponsor should have purchased available hole-inone insurance, but it or its lawyer needed to make sure the contest complied with the terms of the insurance policy or the policy would not cover the loss.

There’s intellectual property in golf as well. The USGA was successful in stopping a software company from using its formula for a handicap index in a program called Eagle Track on a theory that misappropriation and common-law unfair competition had occurred. The first case to recognize that Arizona allows recovery for violation of a person’s right to publicity arose when a video produced by the National Holein-One Association promoting its Million Dollar Hole-in-One Shootout included a six-second clip of a professional golfer who won a shootout.

Because he did not authorize the USGA to use his image to promote its Shootout and the association used it for its commercial advantage, he won a lawsuit in Arizona Federal Court for violation of his right of publicity. Though the design of a golf course can’t be the subject of a copyright registration, it can qualify as the trade dress of the originating course, and copying the design of a hole

and using the name of the course and number of the hole can be the basis for a claim of common-law infringement.

Golf even comes into play in the august arena of constitutional law. A public golf course’s conduct of a men’s-only tournament subjected it to a claim that it violated the Equal Protection Clause of the United States Constitution. And the national debate over sexual orientation and its legal treatment has found its way to a golf course that allowed spouses of members to play for free but balked at extending that treatment to a same-sex couple.

With results from a Scottsdale golf market research—conducted laste year by Sports & Leisure Research Group—the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau gained a better understanding of how Scottsdale golf customers perceive the destination as well as the market’s strengths and weaknesses relative to competitors.

Caroline Stoeckel, vice president of marketing for the Scottsdale bureau, said, “Scottsdale outperformed competitor destinations across nearly every positive metric including high-quality golf, great weather, fine dining and luxury accommodations.”

Customers from 14 Scottsdale golf facilities were contacted to participate in this study; 675 people completed the surveys.

To qualify for the survey, respondents were required to regularly golf and travel.

t had been two weeks since crowds broke records at the Tournament Players Club, but Dave Aardsma’s voice was still thrumming with enthusiasm as he talked about the 2014 Waste Management Phoenix Open.

“We had 563,000 people attend—pretty amazing,” said Aardsma, chief sales and marketing officer for Waste Management.

“I think this was the best one since we’ve been involved with the tournament, from a perspective of us understanding and getting done everything done we wanted to get done. And it went so smooth.”

WM, which has been the title sponsor since taking over from FBR in 2010, lever-

ages the event to show the company’s evolution from a “garbage company” into “a material management company of the future,” Aardsma explains. A big part of the company’s mission is educating people at “the greenest show on grass” on how WM is handling and extract value from materials that would typically be tossed into a landfill.

This year, more than 200 people attended WM’s Sustainability Forum at an Airpark-area hotel, with 12,000 joining the online simulcast on greenbiz.com. For the first time, WM also gave a key group of invitees a behind-the-scenes tour of how everything from cups and food are

pulled from bins to how “gray” rather than “fresh” water can be reused in portable toilets. “We had 24 people from universities and other big sporting events— including Johns Hopkins University and University of Notre Dame—go behind the scenes to show them how things are being repurposed for second use,” Aardsma said. “We let people know they can do it, show them, and then we can help them do it back at their home, whether it’s the New England Patriots or Rutger’s University.”

WM also stressed social media this year to encourage attendees to share feelings about how it diverts 100 percent of waste generated at the event from the landfill.

People were invited to visit a “Zero Waste Station” to ask questions and see hashtag tweets with the #greenest show displayed on a TV screen. “We had 14,000 people use it in their tweets … and it got people talking all over the U.S.,” Aardsma said.

From the perspective of the host Thunderbirds, whose aim is to raise funds for charity, the 2014 was also a smash hit.

David Rauch, chief operating officer of Airpark-based Annexus Group, said his company was motivated to invest in a corporate sponsorship for several reasons, with the event’s charitable impact a major factor. Annexus also appreciates that their dollars go to a weeklong event with numerous opportunities for client bonding vs. a charity ball-type event.

“We bring in about 200 of our most important business partners as guests for about three days, running through Wednesday,” Rauch said. Annexus does business and training meetings offsite then spends the day at the Pro-Am onsite, taking advantage of the opening party and Birds Nest at night.

“For people who are all coming from out of town basically, the experience is just over the top and has been tremendously received,” he said. “It’s a 24-hour whirlwind feast for the senses.”

How to Maximize Your Corporate Suite or Package Skyboxes at the Open’s famously rambunctious sixteenth hole is considered the hottest skybox locale at the event.

re you getting the most out of your business investment? If there is no designated host to greet guests, for example, you could probably be doing better. Here are some tips and ideas from the experts to think about for next year: • Have a host for your organization that is onsite all day. Keep track of invited guests and actual attendees (as they can differ). Follow up with attendees following the tournament. (WM) • Have games, prizes and other engaging activities in your tent/suite. (WM) • Team up with another local company to split a box/suite if you want to save costs. (WM) • Plan a customer meeting in conjunction with the WMPO to encourage out-oftown customers/employees to attend both events. (WM) • Rather than give tickets/passes out with no plan, make sure you are there to spend time with your guests. Unlike

many events that don’t allow much time to talk, the WMPO features intermittent activity. Don’t squander the opportunity to bond with clients and make introductions when action on the greens slows up. Think about arranging for a car to drop them off instead of having them park and walk, especially if you anticipate they’ll be having beers during the event. Also keep abreast of the tight security measures in 2015 they’ll be encountering at the gates, and let them know beforehand so they’ll be prepared. (For example, this was the first year that attendees were “wanded.” Restrictions on bags change every year.) (Rauch) • Start planning for 2015 immediately, especially if you’re trying to coordinate with other events and have clients coming from out of town. 1940s sports lingo, an article in the Nov. 25, 1948, Scottsdale Progress put out a call for “Casaba Hopefuls” among Scottsdale High students. The 1953 Scottsdale High School Beavers won the state basketball championship in its division.  The town of Scottsdale Recreation Department was created in 1960 to administer a town recreation program.

Previously, youth and adult sports were organized by the all-volunteer Civic Coordinating Council, churches and nonprofit youth groups. During the 1960s the local church league was very active; Scottsdale Presbyterian youth were the 1963 league basketball champs.

Basketball—in city parks and recreation centers—has always been a popular, yearround activity, indoors and out.  In 1968, despite reports that the NBA commissioner considered the Phoenix area too hot and too small to support a team, the Phoenix Suns played their inaugural season at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Jerry Colangelo, at age 28, was general manager; Johnny “Red” Kerr was coach; and Tom Van Arsdale was the team’s top draft choice, earning him the nickname “The Original Sun.” Over the

by Spring Training fever in Scottsdale, much to the chagrin of die-hard basketball fans. But visit any sports bar when the Phoenix Suns are playing, or during the Sweet 16 college basketball playoffs, and you’ll surely see that Scottsdalians like to (w)hoop it up!

Catch these rebounds of Scottsdale area basketball history:  In 1924-1925, a year after opening, Scottsdale High School debuted its Scottsdale Beavers basketball team.

Despite the lack of many paved streets and no freeways in the Valley, the team traveled to Litchfield Park, Tolleson, Buckeye, Wickenburg and the Phoenix Indian School to compete. Among 1950s/1960sera Beaver standouts were at least two professional baseball players, Corky Reddell and Hall of Famer Jim Palmer. Other former SHS hoopsters went on to become a minister, a restaurateur, a retail mogul and hold other business and civic leadership positions in Scottsdale. In 1946, we were still such a small town, with only one high school, that the Scottsdale Superintendent of Schools W.W. Dick was also the men’s junior varsity basketball coach. Using

Other venues for youth and adults to play basketball near the downtown Scottsdale area in the 1960s and 1970s were the YMCA and the Boys Club on Osborn.  Starting in 1974, the Scottsdale Charros got involved in sponsoring/hosting a major boys’ basketball tournament.

In 1974 the Charros donated and presented the trophies at the first National Senior Boys Summer Basketball Championships held Aug. 15-18 at Scottsdale Community College. The following year, the Charros sponsored the second annual Summer Prep International Basketball Tournament, with Charro Garth Saager as general tournament chairman and former Olympic champion and Valley resident Jesse Owens as chairman of the Basketball

 On Jan. 14, 1975, the Valley of the Sun(s) was the focus of the basketball world when the NBA All-Star game was played at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Among the greats on the court were Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Walt Frazier and John Havlicek. The All-Star game returned in 1995, to the then-new America West Arena. Superstars on the court included Shaquille O’Neal, Patrick Ewing, Scottie Pippen, Charles Barkley, Hakeem Olajuwon, Dan Majerle and Karl Malone.

The All-Star Game returned again in February 2009 to the US Airways Center.

Although most of the All-Star game events were held in Phoenix, one year the NBA commissioner held his party at Rawhide, the 1880s Western Town and Steakhouse once located on North Scottsdale Road from 1971-2005. Each time the Valley hosted an All-Star game, scores of fans came to Scottsdale to stay and play; some flew in and out of Scottsdale Airport.

Congress International. The August event drew young athletes and collegiate scouts to Scottsdale from throughout the United States. In August 1976, the Charros and the Basketball Congress International again sponsored the U.S. Summer Prep Basketball Classic and International Championships, which were held at Scottsdale’s Coronado High School. Saager and the Charros worked with the athletic staff of Scottsdale Community College and Arizona State University, as well as Owens to stage the multiday event. Hundreds of high school teams competed in basketball games nationwide until there were 16 teams remaining. Those teams were invited to play in the Scottsdale championship.

Over eight days, some 10,000 fans cheered on their favorite teams while scouts from nearly 30 universities viewed the playoffs in hopes of recruiting for basketball strongholds like UCLA, Michigan State, South Carolina and Maryland.

1970s International Basketball Championships programs

 In the mid-1990s, Chicago Bulls superstar Michael Jordan was a member of the Scottsdale Scorpions (one of six teams in Major League Baseball’s Arizona Fall League) during the one year he played minor league baseball. Jordon has also been a familiar sight on Scottsdale golf courses.  When “Live with Regis and Kathie Lee” was broadcast from the Desert Mountain Golf Course in far North Scottsdale in fall 1993, the Phoenix Suns Gorilla stole the show. Arizona’s most famous ape has also been a popular entertainer at the Special Day for Special Kids event at the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park.  According to the Scottsdale Convention and Visitors Bureau website, past and present NBA stars have favorite area resorts: Amare Stoudemire has been seen at the Hotel Valley Ho, and Wilt Chamberlin and Michael Jordan have each been spotted at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess.  The Harlem Globetrotters “front office” is actually in Phoenix. Long-time Globetrotter star Meadowlark Lemon lives here, and his Meadowlark Lemon Ministries website lists Greenway Parkway in the Scottsdale Airpark area as its headquarters.  The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) Phoenix Mercury played its inaugural season at America West Arena in 1997, bringing national attention to women’s sports in Arizona.  The WNBA All-Star Game will be July 19, 2014, at the US Airways Center, hosted by the Phoenix Mercury.  Phoenix/Glendale is a finalist in the bid process to host the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four for the years 2017…continues on page 40 March 2014 Scottsdale Airpark News | 39

layworks Arizona is hosting its second annual Run the Runway 5K/10K and Kids 1-Mile Mascot Dash at the Scottsdale Airport on April 5. Curiosity about the unique event is already spreading across the country.

“Word is out. It’s never been done before,” said Chuck Warshaver, member

of the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce Airpark Committee and executive director of the nonprofit Playworks.

The family-friendly event includes a Kids 1-Mile Mascot Dash featuring Arizona Sports Team Mascots that may include the Phoenix Suns Gorilla, Howler of the Coyotes, Big Red from the Cardinals, Sun Devil’s Sparky, and Baxter from the Diamondbacks.

Participants will run on the Scottsdale Airport runway while being surrounded by beautiful planes and entertainment along this one-of-a-kind route.

Sarah Ferrara, Scottsdale Airport’s aviation planning and outreach coordinator, says people wanting to know more about the fundraiser have approached her at several professional conferences in recent months.

Last year’s inaugural event had more than 800 attendees (300 spectators) and more are expected this year, according to organizers. This will be the first year that the 10K has been added.

Local Innovations in Care Presented to House Health Committee

M

embers of the Arizona House Health Committee chaired by Rep. Heather Carter heard presentations on innovations in patient care, education and research at Scottsdale Healthcare and John C. Lincoln Health Network during a recent hearing at the state capitol.

Committee members and others heard about advance practice nurse education through the CMS Graduate Nurse Education Demonstration at Scottsdale Healthcare, deploying former medics to reduce readmissions through the John C. Lincoln Transition Coach Program, and groundbreaking cancer research through the Scottsdale Healthcare Research Institute.

Legislators appeared impressed with each of the programs, asking for additional information and commenting on the programs’ positive impact for Arizona residents.

Speakers included Melanie Brewer, director, Nursing Research, Scottsdale Healthcare; Teri Pipe, dean, College of Nursing and Health Innovation, Arizona State University; Nathan L. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved several new drugs that were studied at Scottsdale Healthcare. Erivedge, a treatment for advanced basal cell carcinoma, was approved in 2012, and Abraxane, for patients with advanced pancreatic cancer, was approved in 2013. 

Scottsdale Healthcare’s continuing investment in energy efficiency is paying off, with Arizona Public Service Co. recognizing the local nonprofit hospital system for reduced energy use.

An upgrade to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems at the Scottsdale Healthcare Greenbaum Surgery Center last fall resulted in a significant reduction in energy needs and earned a $31,314 rebate from APS, said Dan Evans, facilities manager at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center, where the surgery center is located.

The APS Solutions for Business Program offers rebates based on how much energy may be saved through energy efficient equipment as well as efficiency built into system design, according to Evans.

Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak Hospital also has earned recognition for reducing energy use during peak periods.

Scottsdale Healthcare has several other ongoing sustainability programs including: • Early adoption of LED lights, which last longer and use 20% less energy.

• Printing reduction, saving more than 3 million pieces of paper during the last fiscal year.

• Recycling of paper, plastic, cardboard, metal, medical sharps and computer parts.

• On-site document shredding, with more than 290 tons of paper recycled in FY2012.

Airparkers adopt DMB fitness centers as their healthy and very social club

ith three standalone multimillion-dollar fitness facilities, and a fourth location under construction in Chandler, Village Health Clubs & Spas is among the Valley’s most successful private health club companies.

And while the original location is in the Phoenix Arcadia neighborhood, you’ll have to forgive Scottsdale Airpark residents for adopting The Village as “their” health club, considering its locations in Gainey Ranch and DC Ranch practically bookend the Greater Airpark.

The Village’s ties to North Scottsdale actually go even deeper.

It all started in 1984, when a trio of successful businessmen banded together to create a real estate development firm called DMB Associates Inc. Headquartered in Gainey Ranch, DMB is the developer behind everything from Scottsdale’s DC Ranch and Silverleaf, to the new Eastmark community in Mesa, which is taking shape on five square miles of land that previously

Why Every New Retiree Should Have 2 Financial Advisors

T

he advisor who got you to retirement is very often not the specialist you’ll need to get you through retirement, a point that author Glenn Ruffenach recently made in Smart Money magazine. When we were in our thirties, forties and fifties, an advisor’s mission was to get us to our target retirement date by growing our retirement savings subject to risk, primarily in the stock market. When the market grew, we benefitted fully from that advance. When the market retreated, we were long-term investors with a time horizon of 20-plus years, who should remain invested “for the long term, because most attempts at timing the market are unsuccessful.” It was understood that our time in was more important than our timing.

During these decades, we also remained active contributors to our accounts at work, and those 401(k)s and SEP-IRAs benefitted from continual feeding and ongoing investment. Any nonqualified (non-IRA) investment accounts we had also benefitted by the reinvestment (rather than the taking) of dividends, as the

market history charts on the walls of our stockbroker’s office assumed.

If you’ve arrived at your sixties with financial scar tissue still visible all over your retirement accounts, you’re not alone.

The last 14 years have devastated many investors, even as they poured precious assets into the sieve that was Wall Street from 2000-2013, during which the S&P 500 gained 25.9 percent, or 1.85 percent per year. You understand that now is the time to emphasize preserving—more than or at least as much as growing—your accounts, for you and your spouse, as well as any legacy you hope to leave your children.

As such, you now believe that the majority of your holdings should be in safe, guaranteed instruments, with a minority share remaining in a conservatively managed and well-diversified equities account.

But herein lies the rub: The advisor who handles this now-smaller piece often doesn’t have the training, perspective, or skill set and expertise to also handle the larger, safety-focused piece. As a revealing study

in Financial Planning magazine recently showed, most risk-based advisors are woefully out of touch with the primary goals of their retired clients: When clients were asked what their top concern was, 86.6 percent said “losing their wealth.”

When their advisors were asked the same question, only 15.4 percent believed “losing their wealth” was the most important issue to those clients.

The investment charts used by these advisors still assume reinvested dividends—even though you and most of your friends have begun enjoying that dividend income in retirement— rendering those charts misrepresentative of your market experience and goals.

(Incidentally, those charts also don’t include fees, expenses, taxes or inflation.)

Their timeworn clichés still roll through their lips like compliance disclaimers (“past history is no guarantee of future performance”), even as you and your spouse yearn for non-legalese, plainspoken, common-sense candor in plain English, and the approach and product

Content marketing is any marketing format that involves the creation and sharing of media and publishing content in order to acquire customers.

Rather than focusing on selling, content marketing is about simply communicating with customers and prospects. The idea is to inspire business and loyalty from buyers by delivering consistent, ongoing valuable information.

Basically, its No. 1 focus is building the relationship between you and your customer and prospects. Not selling.

already using some sort of content marketing as part of their overall marketing strategy. Some of the easiest forms to get started are social media posts, blog posts and email marketing.

The biggest issue we see with our clients is the inability to create a content marketing strategic plan and stick with it.

1. Definition of content marketing and its role Throughout 2014, I believe small businesses will be able to explain what content marketing is, and how they can utilize the various outlets to gain market share and increase brand awareness. HubSpot’s 2013 State of Inbound Marketing Report says, “Companies that clearly define marketing and sales roles in relation to content mar-

Especially in B2B settings; if you are a business that views your search engine rankings as an important aspect of your overall marketing efforts, then Google is banking on you joining the Google+ army.

In late 2013 I wrote about the importance of mobile marketing; here we are again.

With the prediction that mobile Internet usage will overtake desktop usage within the next two years, not incorporating mobile into a solid content strategy is no longer an option. Google’s recent rollout of its new algorithm, “Hummingbird,” along with the complete revocation of keyword data from Google Analytics, reinforce this prediction.

Creating content that can be read on your mobile device will become increasingly important, which means mobile-friendly formatting; use bullet points, shorter and actionable blog posts; engage your enduser, and considering which devices your audience will be using to access your content; check your Google analytics.

4. Automating the content marketing process will fail With the increased importance of content marketing, companies will look to automate the process while trying to remove much of the labor-intensive aspects

Billie Jo Herbeger Honored as

Woman of the Year

illie Jo Herberger was honored at Women of Scottsdale at the Annual Women of the Year Luncheon on Feb. 21, 2014, at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa. A longtime resident of Scottsdale for 46 years, Billie Jo has dedicated much of her life to health and fitness, the arts and being a visionary and philanthropist.

“Billie Jo is the epitome of today’s American woman. Her style and vitality are obvious, her intelligence and wit may surprise you,” Founder Linda M. Herold said. “She is a master entertainer and has cultivated quiet elegance with a dash of whimsy to create magical moments for her family, friends and guests.”

Billie Jo then made a name for herself in the United States and Japan with the water aerobics system she developed. Author of books on the topic, she spent 12 years traveling to Tokyo, Kyoto, Kamakura and Nagoya, where she trained Japanese teachers in her Wet and Wonderful Water Exercise system

for use in Japan’s upscale hotels and spas.

In the early 1990s, she met Judd Herberger through an introduction by his mother, the late arts maven and philanthropist Katherine “Kax” Kierland Herberger. The two have been together ever since and were married at Westin Kierland Resort in 2009.

For many years, Billie Jo and Judd have supported dozens of organizations that enhance the Valley. Among these groups are Phoenix Theatre, Ballet Arizona, Valley Youth Theater, the Heart Ball, Release the Fear, KidsRead, Art Renaissance and, of course, the Herberger Theater Center.

veryone knows by now that I’m a huge video advocate, but I think it’s also important to recognize that video is only a part of a much larger concept of relevancy.

With the emergence of new technologies (i.e. wearables), content consumption will be changing drastically. You may not be an early adopter of the latest smart watch or fitness band, but it is only a matter of time before it goes mainstream. If you think about it, these devices are going to give you more intel about a consumer’s preferences and behaviors then any focus group could ever do.

Taking it even one step further, with these technologies, you will now be able to get your brand in front of consumers at the exact moment they are in the midst of a purchasing decision.

No matter what type of business you are, it’s important you start a healthy relevancy plan of action. Here are my current top-five ways to establish and keep relevancy on the fly:

Although desktops aren’t going anywhere, the truth of the matter is that smartphones and tablets are becoming the “it” tools for online purchases. Well, Oreo did something brilliant and decided to live tweet about the blackout during the event. They received tremendous exposure and opened up a new opportunity for marketers to start branded newsrooms. This is a new concept to the industry but certainly worth giving a shot.
