Scottsdale nonprofit Community Celebrating Diversity has announced its 2021 Diversity Champions: Dr. Jan Gehler, former president of Scottsdale Community College, and Alan Rodbell, who recently retired as Scottsdale police chief. Grimaldi’s Pizzeria donates $110K to No Kid Hungry Grimaldi’s Pizzeria has donated $110,000 to No Kid Hungry through its fundraising initiatives in 2020, including the annual Dine Out for No Kid Hungry campaign and a portion from the “Gratitude Fund” contribution from PepsiCo Frito-Lay and the “Flavor Icons” partnership earlier this year.

Since Grimaldi’s partnership with the nonprofit began in 2013, the pizzeria has raised more than $ 1 million to fight childhood hunger.

For each dollar raised, No Kid Hungry can provide 10 meals to hungry children across the United States. In September, guests who dined at any location received a bounce back card to match donations in increments of $5, up to a total of $25 per visit.

“Despite the challenges we’ve faced as a nation, within the restaurant industry, and at a personal level this year, I am so proud to see the way our communities have come together

to continue supporting No Kid Hungry’s efforts to end childhood hunger,” says Eric Greenwald, president of Grimaldi’s Pizzeria.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to continue building a strong relationship between Grimaldi’s and No Kid Hungry as we look forward to our ninth year of partnership.”

Restaurants donate to various charities Steak 44, Ocean 44 and Dominick’s Steakhouse presented more than $64,000 to The Phoenix Heart Ball/American Heart Association, PANDA and Make-A-Wish Arizona.

The funds were all raised in November at each of the restaurants through a month-long charity check round-up and Giving Night on November 30. On that night each of restaurants, Ocean 44, Steak 44 and Dominick’s Steakhouse gave 100% of the proceeds from their first 200 diners to their selected charities.

Steak 44 raised $22,124.20 for the American Heart Association/Phoenix Heart Ball.

Ocean 44 raised $25,000.35 for PANDA. Dominick’s Steakhouse raised $17,027.33 for Make-A-Wish Arizona.

“Make-A-Wish Arizona continues to grant life-changing wishes during this pandemic and Dominick’s Steakhouse is a catalyst to help grant wishes happen children need them the most,” says Shane Power of Make-A-Wish Arizona. “We could not be more thankful to Dominick’s Steakhouse and everyone who came out and supported Make-A-Wish Arizona as

Similarly, the American Heart Association and Phoenix Heart Ball, whose mission is to be an unstoppable force in the fight against heart disease that impacts men, women and children in the United States, also voiced words of gratitude to the steakhouses and their guests for raising these much-needed funds during these tough times.

“Heart disease is still the No. 1 killer in the United States, so these funds are critical right now while we continue to fight heart disease, educate the public and save lives,” says Jennifer Moser, chairwoman of the 2021 Phoenix Heart Ball. “We will use this much-needed money on programs and services to advance the research in saving lives.”

PANDA (People Acting Now Discover Answers), which is dedicated to finding cures and treatments for childhood diseases, received the largest donation from Ocean 44’s month-long event.

Center and every dollar right now helps,” says Tammy Ryan, PANDA president. “We are incredibly appreciative to Ocean 44, all their staff and everyone who came in and supported PANDA.”

Ecep Han adds two FDA, CDC certifications to roster Ecep Han North America, a U.S. veteran co-owned manufacturer and supplier of personal protective equipment, cleared another hurdle after receiving independent certification on chemotherapy gowns and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health approved N-95 masks.

Responding to the demand for the highest-quality PPE at scale has been the mission for Ecep Han North America founders Jonathon Picus and Nick Hammond.

“We have seen considerable attention paid to the idea that quality PPE is in short supply,” Picus says. “Not only can we deliver on that product, but we are working

extremely hard to establish our credibility and position ourselves in front of decision makers who can help us meet the massive demands.”

Based in the Scottsdale Airpark, Ecep Han coordinates PPE shipments from its manufacturing plant in Istanbul. The company has a large monthly production capacity, including more than 5 million gowns and coveralls, 250,000 custom shields and 15 million masks. Since the beginning of the year, Ecep Han has delivered millions of pieces of PPE to customers nationwide, from New Jersey to California.

“Our ability to provide certified PPE

equipment, from gowns, NIOSH-approved N-95 masks, and other protective gear at scale and not produced in China, sets us apart in the market,” Hammond says.

The testing process for the chemotherapy gowns was approved at the international level by EUROLAB and the United Accreditation Foundation, which evaluated the Ecep Han-produced gowns for resistance to various chemotherapy drugs per ASTM F739-12, standard test method for permeation of liquids and gases through protective clothing materials under conditions of continuous contact.

Remodelers TraVek Inc. acquire Trades Unlimited Airpark-based TraVek Inc. has acquired Trades Unlimited, a well-known and established roofing and building envelope waterproofing company in the Valley.

The move to acquire Trades Unlimited started in August 2020 when Warren Raisanen, owner of Trades Unlimited, indicated he was interested in selling so he could pursue another venture. The process took a few months, and the deal was signed December 18.

“This is really exciting for us for several reasons,” says Von Raisanen, president of

TraVek Inc. “First of all, we’re glad to be able to expand the services to offer both Trades Unlimited and TraVek customers. My father and a partner started SunVek Roofing in the ’80s but sold it in 1994. We are very familiar with all facets of roofing, but our focus in recent years has been on remodeling. We have always kept our roofing license, with the thought that one day we would add a roofing division.”

“Now things are coming full circle,” adds Warren Raisanen, president and owner of

Retailer Web Services has new executive leadership Airpark-based Retailer Web Services has new additions to its executive leadership team. All of the members were promoted from within the organization to lead RWS on its growth trajectory and uphold its mission: to serve independent retailers, helping them realize their dreams through the promise of technology.

Genna Majuta has been named chief executive officer, promoted to overseeing strategy for the company and transitioning the role from James “Jim” Kane Jr., founder and CEO. Kane will continue to be actively involved in the business in his role as founder-owner, functioning in a board level capacity, coaching and providing accountability to the RWS executive team.

Majuta has served RWS for 10 years in leadership roles, including chief customer officer most recently, director of customer service and brand manager.

Jodie Pierce will serve as RWS’ new chief operating officer, transitioning the position from Jennie Gilbert who has held the role since the company’s inception in 2006. Like Kane, she will be actively involved, serving in a board level capacity to mentor and advise the executive team. Pierce has served at RWS for seven years, having held positions in marketing and as director of project execution and deployment.

Rounding out the executive team are:

Chief Technology Officer Jeff Dezso, a 10-year veteran of RWS; Chief Financial Officer Kristen Pietragallo, who has been with the company for seven years; and Chief Growth Officer Adam Gilbert, who has been with RWS for nine years.

This team has been transitioning into and operating in their new roles since January 2020, with the new executives running the day-to-day operations at RWS, and founders Kane and Gilbert providing their support while also beginning a new technology startup.

“We’ve had the privilege of leading RWS for a long time,” Kane says. “For me, since preinception over 15 years ago and Jennie (Gilbert), over 14 years ago as the first team member. It’s time for us to step back and create opportunity for others to lead.”

“For Jim and me, our job has been to create a company that attracts great people and inspires them to work together to solve difficult problems,” Gilbert adds. “When that goes well, great products for our customers and new opportunities for bright stars to rise are both created. We are so proud that over the last several years, every new or vacant role in leadership at RWS was filled via promotions of existing team members. We are confident the new executive team will take RWS to new heights and the transitions will be seamless for our customers.”

Rotarians learn about Cave Creek’s history, LTE

By Dr. Honora Norton otary Club of Scottsdale welcomed Kraig R. Nelson, the Cave Creek Museum’s historian and coauthor of the 2013 book, “Images of America: Cave Creek and Carefree.”

Nelson has published in America’s oldest western publication, the Cave Creek-based True West Magazine, and has been honored as volunteer of the year and docent of the year for the Desert Foothills Land Trust and the Cave Creek Museum, respectively.

Since 2011, Nelson has been a member of the Arizona Archaeological Society, which facilitates lectures from some of America’s top archaeologists. He completed advanced coursework for the avocational archaeologist program.

Since 2013, Nelson has given public tours and private presentations for corporate groups at Taliesin West. He’s also a Carefree Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce booster and has written about local history since 2013 for the likes of the chamber guide and A Peek at the Peak.

Nelson noted in his talk and within in a recent the Peak article that the Hohokam were living in the Cave Creek area about 1,270 years ago, arriving in approximately A.D. 750.

In the 1870s, their abandoned canals were revitalized by early Cave Creek Anglos to nurture thirsty crops. We know the Hohokam were master engineers as demonstrated by the approximately 1,000 miles of primary and secondary canals that have been identified in the Phoenix Basin. The Hohokam were the only prehistoric cultural group to rely on a canal system, irrigating approximately 110,000 acres. Impressively, 16 types of crops were cultivated by the indigenous farmers.

Per Nelson, Abraham Lincoln created the Arizona Territory in 1863, separating the future 48th state from the Territory of New Mexico. Fort Whipple, near what is now Prescott, became the first territorial capital.

During his talk, Nelson shared historical facts about Arizona: • Tucson was established in 1775 • Initially Arizona was a confederate territory •Fort McDowell played a major role in development of the Valley of the Sun • Scottsdale was established primarily as an agriculture area in 1894.

• Nelson suggested the Valley’s canals, which were created by hand and flow via gravity, would span from Phoenix to South Dakota.

Returning to Rotary

Adway Gopakumar recently spoke to the Rotary Club of Scottsdale about Liberation Through Education (LTE).

LTE was started as a small community service project in 2018 with a mission of promoting primary education in underprivileged communities.

LTE was chartered as a 501(c) (3) organization in July 2018. During the past three years, LTE raised more than $15,000 with designated contributions of locally sourced school supplies, uniforms, loaded backpacks, roof and building improvements, hearing aids and gifts to schools in India, Ghana and United States.

In July 2020, LTE launched its mentorship program, which is a virtual mentorship

platform that connects qualified high school and university students with underserved students. Its success is measured through increased literacy rates and communication skills, as well as, enhanced critical thinking skills.

LTE is raising funds and promoting initiatives to serve the next generation. LTE’s staff believes in taking action with urgency to raise public awareness about some of the most pressing issues facing society.

By providing the tools necessary for every child to obtain primary education worldwide, LTE hopes to show children growing up in poverty that there is more to the world than what they see every day.

Flying High Again Redevelopment helps the airport top 2019 numbers

cottsdale Airport appears to have escaped the worst impacts of the coronavirus with construction and operations booming in spite of the pandemic’s negative impact on the airline industry as a whole.

The airport’s operations initially took a dip in March and April due to COVID-19, dropping 6%t compared to 2019, according to flight data from the Federal Aviation Administration.

But that data shows activity recovered in the following months and the airport is now on track to surpass 2019 activity this year.

Overall, between January 1 and October 31, Scottsdale Airport has seen nearly 82,000 total flights, a 4% increase over the same time period in 2019.

“It is highly likely that our airport operations and based aircraft numbers will exceed last year’s numbers,” says Scottsdale airport spokeswoman Sarah Ferrara.

According to numbers provided by

the airport, there are 455 aircraft based at Scottsdale Airport, up from 442 in 2019.

The number of aircraft visiting the airport between September and November—excluding those based in Scottsdale— was also up by just about 1% this year compared to 2019, though those numbers were buoyed by a strong September.

Visiting aircraft were actually down by 929 flights, or 5%, in October and November.

The overall increase in flights in Scottsdale comes as activity at all airports nationwide was down 23% from January through October, according to the FAA. Ferrara says Scottsdale Airport’s success is likely due to its chartered flights, which have seen a rise in popularity lately.

As a general aviation airport, Scottsdale Airport does not host commercial airlines, which have been hit hardest by the pandemic.

“So, in our opinion, we think that people, especially with some of the impact of some of the pandemic, are starting to use

more charter operations and maybe even up their use of business aviation, which is pretty much our bread and butter,” Ferrara says.

That is backed by the experience of charter operators at the airport.

“The first couple of weeks in the pandemic, we were extremely busy moving people where they had to go… then in April and May we were very, very slow,” says Ken Casey, director of sales and acquisitions with Pinnacle Aviation, a Scottsdale-based company that offers charter and management services.

“We weren’t doing hardly any business because nobody was going anywhere.”

But Casey says activity started to recover in June.

“We became definitely very busy…a majority of the people who want to do whatever they can not to get on the airlines, not to be exposed, not to go through the whole airport process and risk infection,” Casey says.

The airport could become even busier as it welcomes a third fixed-base operator, or FBO, to Scottsdale.

In 2019, Jet Aviation acquired a stake in Scottsdale Jet Center, which had taken over leases at the airport in 2018.

Approved by the council in December 2018, that deal included plans to redevelop a portion of the site and open an FBO at the airport.

Jet Aviation announced its new hangar terminal opened for business in December.

The Jet Aviation project is just one of several major construction projects that has popped up in and around the airport in recent years.

The airport reported that a mixture of private and public projects has generated more than $92 million in direct construction costs since 2017.

“This is the most construction activity I have seen at the airport and Airpark since 2000 and 2001,” says Scottsdale Aviation Director Gary Mascaro.

That includes the $27 million Business Aviation Center building the city opened in 2018 and three separate private hangar projects valued at around $23 million, Ferrara says.

Scottsdale Airport is also in the process of building up to 14 new box hangars on site.

Phase one of construction, which will include seven hangars, was approved by city council in March at a cost of $4.1 million.

The city council approved six leases for seven of the new hangars in June 2019, and the revenues generated by those leases over the next 20 years will cover the cost of construction, according to the city. 

Second Time’s

a Charm Mayor-elect Ortega has deep Scottsdale roots

The winner of Scottsdale’s m a y o r a l e l e c t i o n p u l l e d o ff a narrow 5,900-vote victory over Lisa Borowsky when Maricopa County finished tallying votes.

Ortega’s latest run for mayor came 16 years after he first ran for the position in 2004 following one term on city council.

Ortega lost that race to incumbent Mary Manross, who then lost in 2008 to current Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane.

Now, with Lane termed out after 12

years in office, Ortega is in line to become the city’s 11th mayor.

Though Ortega was not born in Scottsdale, he has put down deep roots in the community since moving here over 40 years ago.

Ortega started out his life in Scottsdale working for iconic architect Bennie Gonzales in the late 1970s before opening his own firm in the 1980s and entering local politics decades later.

His wife Rosemary Ortega’s roots run even deeper, having moved to Scottsdale as a child in 1966 after her father, a former New York cop, was hired to join the Scottsdale Police Department’s command team under Walter Nemetz, the longtime chief of police.

“I’m very proud of him,” Rosemary says.

“It’s kind of humbling to think of all the people; the effort that it takes. You realize

how much so many people are willing to do to support you and give you their ideas their time with their families.”

David and Rosemary Ortega still live in the home they bought 38 years ago just north of Saguaro High School. There, they raised two children who went on to graduate from Saguaro High, their mother’s alma mater.

But David Ortega’s story started out about 100 miles east of the Valley in Globe, which he remembers as “a wonderful city.”

His family, which also has deep roots in Tucson, owned a jewelry shop in Globe.

The Ortega family’s store has no relation to the Gilbert Ortega Indian jewelry stores that have long lined Scottsdale Road downtown, though David did design the Gilbert Ortega store on the corner of Scottsdale Road and Main Street in 1997.

AIRPARK Buzz Like his father before him and daughter after, Ortega attended UA. Shortly after graduating with a degree in architecture, Ortega came to Scottsdale and took a position working for Gonzales, who designed Scottsdale’s Civic Center Library, City Hall and Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.

Ortega, who opened his own firm in the 1980s, said his architectural background has influenced his views as a local leader.

“I believe my buildings should be postcards for people…and I’ve always promoted that part of Scottsdale, because it’s got its own cache and we can build on it,” Ortega says.

Ortega, who has four sisters and one brother, was the only member of his family to move to the Valley.

And it did not take long for Scottsdale to make an impression on him.

“I remember driving up Scottsdale Road with kind of my jaw dropped,” Ortega says.

Not long after coming here, Ortega met Rosemary, nee Gannon, whose father, the late Michael Gannon, would soon become the city’s next police chief.

Gannon, a World War II veteran, took over Scottsdale Police Department in 1982, serving in the position until he retired in 1988.

Gannon, who passed away in 2008, was a man of few words known for his “professionalism and a tough but fair attitude,” according to an obituary.

“He was an amazing man,” Ortega says.

As Ortega tells it, he shared a few words with Gannon during his first dinner at the Gannons but found out from his future brother-in-law that their brief interaction was significant.

“I said, ‘Gee, your dad’s pretty quiet’ and he said, ‘Well, he’s spoken more to you than all of her other boyfriends,’” Ortega says.

David Ortega and Rosemary Gannon married in 1980 and went on to have daughter Alexandra and son Luke.

For Ortega, Scottsdale has been a great place to build his life.

“My life here has been amazing, and basically after 20 years I was elected councilman and that was exciting; I enjoyed that,” Ortega says. “And here we are 20 years later and I’m in the position of leadership for the city.”

But Ortega’s life in Scottsdale has also been marked by tragedy.

In 2014, his daughter Alexandra, or Alli as she was known to friends and family, died of complications related to knee

Despite her untimely death, Alli Ortega had an outsized impact on the community during her life.

After attending UA, Alli returned to Scottsdale to work at the Paiute Neighborhood Center in South Scottsdale.

Alli, a longtime volunteer at the center, was hired as a recreation leader in 2005.

But that job title does not encompass the role she filled at the center, where Alli led the afterschool and teen programs and had a positive impact on countless children.

An online obituary included dozens of condolences from friends, families and children impacted by Alli.

Alli was an amazing unique person,” Maggie Wells wrote. “She loved every one of us (at) Paiute no matter (who) we were...

She was like a second mother to me and the rest of the kids.”

To this day, the city of Scottsdale and Scottsdale Community Partners host the Alli Ortega Empty Bowls fundraiser to support the Vista Del Camino food bank and in 2019, the city officially dedicated the Alli Ortega Memorial Garden at Paiute Community Center.

Alli’s brother built his own impressive resume abroad.

After graduating from Saguaro, Luke went on to graduate from Yale and now works for the U.S. State Department.

As of 2019, Luke served as a cultural attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Bolivia, according to the embassy’s website.

David and Rosemary Ortega also have two grandsons who live with Luke and his wife Lais in South America.

During the Bolivian political crisis in fall 2019, David Ortega had to take a break from local politics and travel to Bolivia to bring his grandsons to Scottsdale.

At the time, Ortega was a vocal opponent of the proposed Sunday Goods dispensary in downtown Scottsdale but was conspicuously absent from the November City Council vote on the project.

In communications with the Scottsdale Progress—the Scottsdale Airpark News’ sister publication—from November 2019,

Ortega only said he was “7,400 miles away in Andes” and could not make it to the meeting.

“I was in Bolivia by myself in the event that the children would have to be evacuated and they were evacuated; I evacuated grandsons,” Ortega says.

Despite his long history in the city, Ortega did not enter local politics until late 1999 before going on to win a council seat in 2000.

“I came into Scottsdale and everything unfolded for us; getting married, having children, having a beautiful life. I wanted to be involved in school, church and business,” Ortega says. “It was natural for me to then step up when I ran for council.”

Much like today, that campaign was centered on his criticism of council for being too beholden to developers.

He then served one term, foregoing a reelection campaign to run against Manross for mayor in 2004.

In the years between his mayoral runs, Ortega mostly remained out of politics save a failed run for a seat on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors on the Democratic ticket in 2012.

But, in 2019, Ortega reappeared on the local political scene, attending a handful of council and planning commission meetings to oppose high-profile downtown developments like Southbridge Two and the Sunday Goods dispensary.

He argued they did not fit the character of the area or would overburden local infrastructure.

“You know what my track record has been for the last two years, you know, involved in downtown issues,” Ortega says.

“I spoke freely; I spoke courteously, and I spoke directly to council.”

Those projects persuaded Ortega to enter a crowded mayoral election that already had three candidates when he announced his run in January.

“It had to do with the tone-deaf council,” he says.

"I know the system; I know how the process should work, and it seemed to be stacked against the downtown.” 

Sphinx Date Ranch’s roots run deep in Scottsdale

N

early 100 years ago, Roy Franklin discovered a tree sprouting in a Phoenix y a rd a n d k n e w i t w a s something special.

The tree was producing black sphinx dates, which are smaller and sweeter than Medjool dates with a bit thinner skin. Still only known to grow in Arizona, these dates helped plant the seed for one of Scottsdale’s most beloved businesses: Sphinx Date Co. Palm & Pantry.

“If you would have told me that dates—and even Scottsdale—would be in the cards for me even 10 years ago, I may not have believed you,” says Sharyn Seitz, who owns Sphinx Date Co. Palm & Pantry with her daughter, Rebecca Seitz.

Sharyn was born in New Jersey and spent much of her early years moving around everywhere from Montreal to St. Louis. In college, she studied economics, which led to a successful career in the finance and government fields, including work for the state of Illinois in the governor ’s budget office, owning her own business and working for Amtrak in Washington, D.C. Her first brush with Scottsdale was when she and her daughters moved there in 1977, but had to depart soon for Chicago (and eventually Indianapolis), where her thenhusband had been hired for a job, but made her way back a second time in 1982. During her second time around, while raising her family, Sharyn made a name for herself, including holding positions with the Arizona Legislature, city of Phoenix and private companies in the Valley.

“During my first stint in the area, I was a proud member of the second-ever graduating class of Scottsdale Leadership back in 1994, and eventually served as its president.

I was also appointed by Mayor Drinkwater to work on the Mayor ’s Budget Review Committee in 1994, and the Scottsdale Citizens Bond Oversight Committee from 1989

Family and eventually a new career opportunity called Sharyn away from Scottsdale again, however, in the early 2000s first in Kansas City to help family and then in D.C. after Amtrak came calling. When she retired from the company in 2012 as assistant vice president of finance for budget and grant administration, she wasted no time in coming back.

“The third time is the charm for me and Scottsdale. It is my forever home,” Sharyn says.

But what to do this third time around?

“By this time, my daughter Rebecca was grown and working in digital marketing,” says Sharyn, who adds Rebecca is a graduate of Scottsdale Leadership as well. “If you remember back to the early 2010s, much of that industry was struggling—like most industries—as a result of the Great

Together, the two discussed combining their skills to start a business.

“At the time, Sphinx Date Co. Palm & Pantry was operating as Southwest Gourmet Market,” Rebecca says.

“The business was looking for a buyer, and in researching it we learned about Arizona’s rich date history.”

Inspired to update the market as a showplace for not only dates but a bevy of artisanal products from Arizona, the mother-daughter team bought the business and rebranded as Sphinx Date Co. in 2012.

“My mom’s operation and financial knowledge combined with my abilities in digital marketing and e-sales was a perfect fit,” Rebecca says.

“The only challenge we faced was from the initial name.”

As Sphinx Date Co., many assumed they were a date farm versus a market with locally sourced gifts of all types ranging from honey and salsa to wine and beer.

PacketWatch is the name of the business and the proprietary network monitoring,

analysis and investigation platform designed to help cybersecurity threat hunters quickly and efficiently accomplish their daily tasks. He calls PacketWatch one of the “coolest tools out there.”

“Our company provides cybersecurity for corporations and individuals,” he says.

“We meet our customers in a couple ways.

Obviously, we love referrals. That’s great.

“Sometimes we perform what’s called ‘managed detection response,’ which is, essentially, watching your network for you, making sure nothing bad gets in. If something does happen, we identify it very quickly and reduce ‘dwell time’—how long the bad folks are in there—and then we keep your network safe.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an uptick in incident responses, McAndrews

says. The opportunities are greater for hackers to access remote gateways to networks because folks are rushing to set up workstations at home.

“They’ve expedited getting laptops and things into people’s hands,” he says.

“Companies are creating more remote access accounts—and they don’t always put security first.

“Now there are more opportunities for these folks who have been out there scanning for these things to find them. We’re seeing a lot more breaches.”

Many times, affected companies become long-term, managed detection clients.

Use complex passwords

McAndrews has been in the field for 25 years and has spoken at many events.

“Sometimes in my talks, I tell people I have found that a large percentage of the population in America has at least three passwords,” he says.

“You have one password that you think is just for small sites that you don’t care about, you have one that you think is a little bit more secure, and you have one you might use for your banking. Most people seem to fall into that category.”

For example, if the “medium” password is on a website that is breached, the hackers will download the database of usernames and passwords. They then put it into a password spray.

“They can blast your email address with that password across the top 1 million websites in a matter of minutes,” he says.

“So, just imagine that if I get that one password you’ve used on a few dozen sites and I blast it to the top 1 million sites in the world, how many am I going to get into? What if I do get into that website?

Am I going to have your credit card information, your home address, your shipping information, etc.?”

McAndrews doesn’t use the same password twice, and he suggests others do the same. Password managers like LastPass come in handy for this.

“I couldn’t even tell you my passwords because my password manager changes them,” McAndrews says. “They’re very complex and they’re long. If I need to do a password reset because I don’t have my password manager, I can still do that. But for right now, my passwords are secure.”

On the commercial side, McAndrews recommends using multifactor authentication, an electronic authentication method in which a computer user is granted access to a website or application only after successfully presenting two or more pieces of evidence to an authentication mechanism.

“When you sign in, they send you a text or they need to type in a code that protects it,” McAndrews says. “Even if your company’s passwords or emails fall into the wrong hands, if they don’t have the second factor, if they don’t have the text message or the code, they can’t get in, right?”

Patch management is important as well. McAndrews and his colleagues are seeing an increase in unauthorized access coming through network devices.

Virtual private network gateways and firewalls are vulnerable. If companies haven’t fixed that vulnerability, hackers exploit them. Once hackers sneak into

a company network, they start looking around. That’s when McAndrews and his clients see an increase in ransomware.

One of McAndrews’ intelligence analysts said in Q3 2019, the average ransom was $42,000. The same time in 2020, it’s over $233,000.

“On average, some companies estimate the actual cost is over a million for the average ransomware incident,” he says.

“As for the ransoms, they are reaching almost a quarter million dollars on average and companies are being asked to pay to get their data back.”

McAndrews says ransomware is a huge moneymaker for organized crime based in Eastern Bloc countries. Recently, he adds, U.S. Department of the Treasury officials said those who make payments to sanctioned groups can face sanctions.

He suggests establishing segregated backup routines so they’re not in the

same domain. Many ransomware groups immediately look for backups and delete them, which adds more pressure to pay the ransom.

Hackers also threaten to publish data on the dark web and, eventually, the internet.

“I have numerous clients right now where I found their information on the dark web,” he says. “Unfortunately, it’s already out there. So, they’re having to deal with that as we move forward and clean up the network to keep them out.”

Cybersecurity expert

McAndrews has always been interested in cybercrimes and knew, one day, he’d work for the FBI. After working in sales, McAndrews became an agent and taught at the FBI Training Academy at Quantico and the International Law Enforcement Academy in Budapest.

As an agent, he worked in cyber matters and was on a special team called the Cyber Action Team that was deployed for the highest-profile intrusions.

He also fought crimes against children, which he calls some of his best work, as he knew he was saving kids.

“I never had a case that I didn’t feel completely 100% about,” he says. “I got confessions out of pretty much all my subjects. Unfortunately, it’s an illness, I believe. We need to protect people, especially children. You get one chance at childhood, and for someone to mess that up for their own benefit is unforgiveable to me.”

The FBI was primarily forensic work.

Now that he’s returned to the private sector, he feels he can do more to help people.

“In the private sector, I can help businesses and individuals prepare,” he says.

“It’s a good feeling to say I put a lot of people in jail who needed to be there, but now I can help companies really secure their networks.”

McAndrews puts his motivation simply. Most of his friends are musicians, and he admires their creativity. To many of them, their career comes easily. Music isn’t so easy to McAndrews.

“You get one chance at childhood, and for someone to mess that up for their own benefit is unforgiveable to me.”

Longtime friends

McAndrews helped found PacketWatch with CEO Chuck Matthews.

“I met Chuck through the FBI Citizens Academy,” McAndrews says. “He was formerly one of the folks who helped manage that for the country.

“Chuck and I became acquainted, and we spoke quite a bit. We were at an FBI charity golf tournament when we first

talked, and we kept in touch. Eventually, he convinced me that I could make a difference, so when I joined them, we fulfilled our vision.”

The two have worked with the government, the media, manufacturing and individuals. The biggest compliment he receives is clients love working with him because he has “a personality.”

“One of our customers even wrote a review for us one day,” McAndrews says.

“She said watching us work was like being in a Jason Bourne movie. She said when she sees us on the phone and computer, it just came to life. We’re not a large shop that just runs you through the mill. We’re honest with you. We want to do what’s right. We’re not going to run up the clock on you.”

Back to the three M’s, quite a few of McAndrews’ colleagues are musicians, ranging from Eric Clapton tributes to heavy metal.

“We have a rock ’ n’ roll flair, and we love it,” he says. “If you get to know me, I’m all about malware, music and motorcycles. Let’s just do it and have fun.” 

Getting Money Moving Early Warning offers banks intelligence, Zelle Network

“We provide intelligence to the financial services industry. We get money moving,” explains Meghan Fintland, director of influencer relations at the company, which has a location in the Airpark. “What that means is that we are a payments and risk technology company, and so we provide the backend

technology and intelligence that banks use to verify payments and verify identity of the consumer.”

Owned by seven of the country’s largest banks—Bank of America, Capital One, JPMorgan Chase, PNC Bank, Truist, U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo—Early Warning offers a variety of identity, risk and payment solutions.

They include identity validation and first-party fraud or account mismanagement assessment, identity theft protection service alerts, account location and asset search and verification, electronic consent-based SSN verification, and payment and deposit verification with account owner authentication.

Of all its offerings, however, it’s the Zelle Network that has gained the most notoriety among the general public, allowing for quick and easy person-to-person (P2P) payments as well as disbursements and small-business

transactions within the United States.

“We sell to any type of financial institution, whether that’s a regional bank, a national bank or a credit union—any financial institution in the United States,” Fintland explains.

“We have over 2,500 customers within our foundational products, so our payments and risk technologies; and then with Zelle, we are in more than 800 mobile banking apps to date, and over 1,000 financial institutions are contracted in our network.”

Consumers whose bank or credit union is not a partner can instead download the Zelle mobile app from the Apple or Google Play app stores and link an eligible Visa or

Mastercard debit card.

Enrollment requires an email or U.S. mobile number, and then the consumer can send money to or receive money from other Zelle users—regardless of bank, though at least one person in each transaction must have a bank within the network—typically within minutes.

Zelle does not charge any fees, though the company’s website recommends consumers verify that with their financial institution.

The network, which was launched in 2017, allows “for replacement of checks and cash,” or the sending of “money to people you know and trust,” Fintland describes.

“Not a lot of people carry cash anymore, and an easy way to send money to people you know and trust is through your digital banking app or mobile banking app,” she says.

Though the Zelle Network originated for P2P payments, it has since expanded to support small-business transactions, a feature Fintland says “is continuing to increase with more small businesses and banks coming on board.” Seven financial institutions currently support this feature: Bank of America, Chase, Citi, Frost Bank, FirstBank, Morgan Stanley and U.S. Bank.

“There›s all these types of small businesses that can really benefit from not accepting checks, cash flow, and being able to manage their accounts more efficiently,” she says, adding that Zelle reduces companies’ risks to tangible money.

“You lower your risk by using Zelle, because that's right into your mobile banking account, and then it helps you manage your cash flow much more easier.”

Zelle also allows the disbursement of pay-

ments from organizations, companies and the government. Examples, Fintland says, include the American Red Cross donating to people in the face of natural disasters; insurance claim payments; financial aid for students; as well as the issuing of refunds.

In short, Zelle saves time and money that she says would otherwise be spent when issuing physical checks.

Essentially, Early Warning is “continuing to be able to innovate our platform to serve the needs of contactless payments, digital payments,” Fintland says. “It’s been really interesting to see the brand and to see the use cases of P2P change, because it didn’t stop when COVID hit—it actually expanded and helped people move on with their lives.”

That growth shows, as the company announced in early November that it had exceeded 1 billion payment transactions from September 2019 to September 2020. That includes $84 billion in payments processed during the third quarter of 2020, an 18% growth from the previous quarter, from 323 million overall transactions, a 17% growth.

Small businesses, on the other hand, received $4.5 billion in payments, over 30% more than the previous quarter, while Zelle’s disbursements business saw nearly $500 million sent to consumers by companies.

“We're not just seeing that younger generation—Gen Z and Gen X—use Zelle, but we're also seeing seniors as well. So, within this past year, we saw an increase of seniors using Zelle to send money to their families or to receive money, and to send money to their grandkids for gifting,” Fintland highlights, noting a partnership with Older Adults Technology Services and Senior Planet that offered older adults digital banking courses.

“It’s a really interesting time to be with Early Warning and Zelle and just the financial services industry, because it’s changing so rapidly with people at home,” Fintland says.

‘Life is Hell Sometimes’ Rebalancing the brain with Cereset Technology

he brain is an extremely complex system. The left and right hemispheres are in constant communication with each other and when outside stressors and traumatic events enter the equation, the brain’s full abilities are eroded. This can cause one’s brain to enter a freeze response of numbness or a fight or flight response of anxiety.

Scottsdale Airpark-based Cereset uses a noninvasive process to reset and rebalance the brain so it can operate at its fullest abilities. Cereset has facilities across the country and has extended its growth worldwide, as it now has locations in Europe as well.

“We support the most vastly complex and powerful near-infinite system that we know of in the universe, which is the human brain. We support it to do its own work,” says Lee Gerdes, CEO and founder of Cereset.

Cereset was formerly called Brain State Technologies, which was founded in 2000 conceptually and was incorporated in 2004.

It went by this name for 16 years until it developed an algorithm and evolved into an advanced neuro-technology brand and changed its name to Cereset in 2017.

The name combines “cer” from cerebrum (brain) and reset, creating Cereset.

Clinical trials have shown Cereset in the 90th percentile, helping people find relief from a range of mental ailments like depression, anxiety, insomnia and concussion injuries with a success rate of 85% to 96%, Gerdes says.

“That’s way beyond anything in the field. But you see, we’re not doing anything

to the brain. What we’re doing is supporting the brain to balance itself.”

Cereset clients sit in what Gerdes calls a comfortable chair and are asked to close their eyes. Four proprietary high-resolution brain frequency sensors are placed on two areas of the scalp, which record precise real-time brain rhythms. A patented algorithm translates the brain rhythms and correlates them to specific engineered tones to create a unique “brain echo.”

which helps the brain recognize its reflection and enable it to fully relax and reset itself to its natural balance. Clients come in for six sessions and periodic “tuneups” as needed, Gerdes says. Cereset is a health and wellness system, not a medical intervention system, he adds.

“Everybody faces junk,” Gerdes says.

“Life isn’t fair, and we all get dealt hands at times that just quite frankly suck, and there isn’t much we can do about it.

“But that hand that we’re dealt can change our brain because our brain’s job is to keep us alive. If (the brain) has to go in fight or flight to keep us alive, it will, and it will stay there because it did keep us alive. If it has to go into a freeze response to keep us alive, it will do that and it will

stay there.”

Cereset reminds the brain of its middle ground, and as it does, it relaxes and resets itself, he explains.

“With over 800 people through clinical trials and 150,000 clients, we’ve never had an adverse response except for a slight headache,” he says, mentioning that it caused a loss of sleep for a night or two for some people.

For some, Cereset is not effective, Gerdes says. It’s unclear why the technology doesn’t work but he hypothesized that it could be due to certain medications the patient was on that caused the process to slow down, like xanax, benzodiazepines, strong sleep aids as well as opiates.

However, if patients can get off or lessen

the amount of some of these medications, it’s likely their brain will have a more effective response, he says.

The all-inclusive Cereset package is $1,500 for four consecutive sessions, which are usually done within the same week.

The package also includes a follow-up “Integration” session three weeks later, which adds up to a total of five, one-hour sessions.

Cereset also offers an “Introduction to Cereset” $99 special. The introduction is a 50-minute evaluation that includes an orientation with a personal TechCoach, a baseline brain observation, a Personal Brain Index and a recommended plan of action.

“Life, especially now, is hell sometimes,” Gerdes says. “It moves so fast,

there’s so much stress, and now with COVID–oh my.”

The Scottsdale Cereset location as well as a number of offices around the country has worked with many people dealing with persistent, long-lasting symptoms of COVID-19, Gerdes says. These symptoms include depression, anxiety, sleep issues as well as the loss of taste and smell. However, “we’ve never dealt with the loss of taste and smell before,” he says.

Cereset has been able to rebalance the brain, helping patients to regain their senses of taste and smell with four sessions within a week’s time, Gerdes says.

As Cereset has progressed, the leaders decided to standardize the technology instead of licensing it, Gerdes says. This allowed Cereset to create a franchise and grow significantly, as it now has 30 offices, four of which are in Europe and the rest scattered across the United States. Four more offices are opening by March, he says.

“The success of our franchise so far is

very, very good,” he says. He described most of the people who own franchises as “hobbyists,” as most aren’t doing it for money. “They got into this more as a retirement type of thing.”

Gerdes discovered that the most important qualification one must have to own a franchise is “compassion,” Gerdes says.

“They have to be able to truly care about people.”

It’s also important for franchise owners to have a background in health care or have reference points from the health care area so they can refer clients, he says.

Cereset and the U.S. military

Cereset had a study with the Wake Forest School of Medicine in WinstonSalem, North Carolina, on persistent postconcussive syndrome for athletes, Gerdes says, adding that “All those athletes came back fully.”

for us to do some research with them,” Gerdes says.

Mild traumatic brain injury or persistent post-concussive syndrome is “a signature injury of the war on terror,” he says. Around 100,000 people in the military suffer from these conditions, he adds.

“They have yet to find anything effective,” he says. “They can help some people mitigate some of the symptoms, but they can’t really get the person back to their full experience and quality of life.”

After receiving a grant from the Department of Defense, Cereset is working with people in the military and is conducting a study at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, as well as Fort Bragg, a military installation in North Carolina, he says.

“We’re having great success with that,” he says. “We would be done with phase one if it weren’t for COVID. “We’re excited about the possibilities and we should finish that up in 2021.”

The Department of Defense wanted to conduct a study to measure the brain in its actual state using magnetic resonance imagining (MRI), Gerdes says. They wanted to do the treatments three weeks after the intervention as well as three months and six months, he says.

However, Gerdes saw this as a problem and “threw my best 5-year-old tantrum I could muster,” he says. The reason he said he didn’t want to do it in six months is that “I’ve worked with a lot of Navy Seals and I know those guys and the first thing they’re going to do is go back to the field.”

However, the Department of Defense, paying for their services, said “that’s the way it’s going to be,” Gerdes says.

Gerdes’ prediction was right he said, as everybody in the study group went back into combat. However, Gerdes and Dr. Charles Teleger, a neurologist and professor at the Wake Forest School of Medicine who led the study, were amazed by the outcome, he says.

Because the operators were back in the field getting shot at, the two expected the brain to show the rigors of that and anticipated that the brain would be less balanced than it was in three weeks.

However, “what we saw was exactly the opposite,” he says.

“It was more balanced in six months, even after they went back to war,” Gerdes says. The only thing the two could hypothesize was that they were dealing with a group of patients who loved what they do for a living, he adds.

“They gave 150% to everything in it,” he says. “They love their brothers, they loved operating, they loved it. When we love what we do. It really, really matters in terms of our own well-being.”

Technology advancement and future growth

Before the Cereset algorithm was developed, when the company went by the name Brain State Technologies, the technology was driven by a tech coach, Gerdes says, explaining how the tech coach made decisions for the clients in between sessions. Instead of the four sensors they use now, two sensors were used to mirror the brain’s activity back to itself. From there, technologists, after reading the graph, would change the protocol for the next session, he adds.

This process required ten to 15 sessions at around two hours each over a five- to 15-day period, meaning that the client had to invest around 20 to 30 hours to go through the sessions. It also took a long time to train the technologists, he said, adding that it took six months for

technologists to become relatively proficient and a year to become very proficient.

“We collected all the data for all those years before, and we created algorithms around that data so the computer could make those decisions in real time,” Gerdes explains.

The algorithm also made it so technologists can be trained in two to three weeks instead of a year, he says.

Cereset is in another growth point and is ready to take Cereset 2X to the FDA for medical device authorization clearance, he says. They are looking for an investor to join.

Hook & Hunt Airpark business is Arizona’s best-kept secret

M

ary Hampton’s Scottsdale Airpark office of Hook & Hunt is unassuming.

It sits smack dab in the middle of a connected row with several other businesses at 15955 N. Dial Boulevard. Double glass doors are surrounded by large windows and a cinderblock frame that sits 50 feet tall.

From the outside looking in, the office space looks unsuspecting and almost identical to the others. However, the warehouse is one of Arizona’s best-kept secrets.

Hook & Hunt is an online eCommerce store that sells name brand merchandise at a 50% discount. It’s a cross between eBay and Amazon. Items are listed at a low price, similar to a low bid on eBay, and once customers secure the deal, the shipping process is comparable to Amazon.

“I guess you could say we are a bit unsuspecting from the outside looking in, but our 5,000-square-foot warehouse is truly astonishing and it’s like a completely different world back there,” Hampton says.

“I haven’t had one person come through who isn’t astonished by what they see.”

Ironclad shelves line the east wall, rows of cardboard bins are centered down the middle and more than 12 pallets of merchandise sit stacked against the west side of the warehouse, appearing more like a highly secured vault.

“It’s safe to say that we pretty much have one of everything,” Hampton says. “You name it, we’ve got it.”

“The initial idea for Hook & Hunt was to create a place where customers could come in and shop, then the pandemic hit,” Hampton says. “I had to make a decision when Arizona went on lockdown in March and instead of opening a store, I moved everything to a strictly online model. The world came to a stop, but instead of putting my dreams on hold, I decided to pivot.”

Hampton’s decision to become a shippingbased business and allow local customers the option of contactless pick up, is the key to her success.

“In the beginning, it was just me and my kids filling anywhere between 15 and 20 orders a week,” Hampton says. “Now I have a staff who is responsible for logging inventory, uploading items to the website and making sure all of the merchandise is boxed and shipped within 48 hours of an order being placed.”

Hampton runs a tight ship and is a savvy businesswoman. Her already well-established custom closet company, Hampton Design & Closets, wasn’t put on the backburner while launching this new endeavor. Hook & Hunt didn’t stop Hampton from launching a new nonprofit this year either. Through Rare Ambition, Hampton and her two adult children were able to provide Thanksgiving dinner to 30 local families struggling financially.

Hampton has always believed in putting families first, her own and those of strangers. That’s actually where the idea of Hook & Hunt started. As the sole provider for daughter Cambria Hatch, 19, and son Hunter Hatch, 18, Hampton has always strived to give them the best of the best.

“But nice things always come with a ridiculously hefty price tag,” Hampton says.

“As a single mom, it wasn’t always easy in the beginning to buy the biggest TV or the newest gaming console.”

“What could’ve been the most challenging time to start a business and the easiest time to make excuses and stop everything, she decided to make it work,” says Hunter, who also runs the warehouse. “My mom never made a plan B because she was that determined to make Hook & Hunt a success.”

The future looks bright for Hook & Hunt.

As inventory sells, Hampton is quick to purchase more items in bulk, but they are rarely the same.

“I’m always mixing things up and it’s helping me determine what people are really after,” says Hampton. “It’s also been a lot of fun getting calls from customers who are overly excited to find such good deals, they think there’s a catch.”

There isn’t.

“My dad opened his original Scottsdale location well before there was a freeway,” says Jeremy Smith, co-owner and director of showrooms.

he Waste Management Phoenix Open’s enormous crowds, the thunderous cheers and the countless festivities will have to wait another year due to the rapidly spreading COVID-19.

The event will welcome a limited number of fans this year.

Scaled-down structures are under construction around the TPC Scottsdale’s 16th hole, which will be available to fans who purchase the package to attend the famous par-three hole. Tickets are $500 to have a headshot in primary visibility, and $250 to be in secondary visibility as a virtual fan.

“As we continue dialogue with the PGA Tour and the city of Scottsdale, ultimately, we would like to land between 5,000 and 8,000 fans a day,” Jenkins says.

The maximum of 8,000 fans per day will not compare to the over 700,000 fans the tournament has seen in recent years, but Jenkins still believes the week of February 1 to February 7 will provide great moments.

“I still think it is going to be an amazing venue to watch golf,” Jenkins says. “The golf course is beautiful, and it is really going to serve two diff erent purposes.

If you want to watch some of the best golfers in the world, that opportunity is there. The 16th hole is going to be a

single-deck structure, but it is still going to be the largest structure in golf. It is our goal to make it as fun and exciting as it usually is.”

Part of the annual golf tournament is the raucous Coors Birds Nest Concert Series, which features prominent singers and performers each year. However, due to COVID-19, it has been canceled.

“We decided we had enough on our plate with the golf tournament,” Jenkins says. “A super majority of the money comes from the golf tournament, so we decided to cancel Birds Nest, and focus on what we do best, which is the golf tournament.”

A majority of the hospitality suites and structures will not be built this year do the number of limited fans, and as of right now, fans are only can buy packages for the 16th hole. The packages range from $12,000 to $16,000. No word yet on general admission.

“It’s our intention to try and make it work with general admission,” Jenkins says.

The Waste Management Phoenix Open has been nothing but spectacular each year. From Tiger Woods’ ace at the

16th hole in 1997, to the robot hitting a hole-in-one on the 16th hole in 2016, the tournament has always had its incredible moments. The event has won tournament of the year four of the last six years, including 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2019. It has made itself a gold standard of professional golf.

“If you have watched golf for the last six months, you see how the PGA Tour and its TV partners have done an incredible job showing the game without fans,” Jenkins says. “It’s just going to be different. We get attendance of 30,000 to 40,000 people on Monday or Tuesday, where it is a practice round.

“It’s a giant 192-acre golf course where people are going to be spread out. Acupuncturist Kiya Hunter just wants to end the world’s suffering

irpark-based Acupuncturist Kiya Hunter just wants to heal people.

Hunter has been treating pain, autoimmune diseases and other hardto-treat cases since 2008, through either massage or acupuncture. She has a deep understanding of the brain-body connection and provides results.

One of her patients, an 80-year-old marine, came in with a morphine drip attached to him.

“His pain was an 8 out of 10—even with the morphine drip,” Hunter says. “After regular acupuncture, he was shaking his hips and twirling his cane. It sounds like something from a movie, I know. His peripheral

artery disease went away. It was amazing.”

Hunter says acupuncture has many benefits like stress reduction, an immune system boost and pain relief. A child came in with chronic mucus in the lungs from an infection and Hunter provided relief.

“You never know what you’re going to get,” she says.

Working in the health field was a longtime dream for Hunter. She wanted to be a doctor since she was 4, when she received a doctor’s kit. After high school, she went straight to massage school, so she could work parttime and “make good money while I got my bachelor’s degree in psychology.”

“I did run my own massage business for a while,” says Hunter, who earned her master’s degree. “I had a child at the time.

My son went to preschool during the day and, sometimes, he would go to school with me at night.”

She moved to Arizona to earn a master’s degree in acupuncture from the Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture. Hunter adores Arizona and has found success with her practice, Meraki Acupuncture.

Her treatment is quick and easy; clients are in and out of the office in 30 minutes.

Once patients are evaluated, Hunter analyzes clients’ presentation and gives an estimate of the number of treatments likely needed based on clinically evidence-based data. This varies with the specific condition, the amount of time you’ve had it, and other factors.

The acupuncture process is repeated two to five times a week until maximum improvement is seen. Then a maintenance regimen is often prescribed to prevent recurrence.

Maintenance may be as little as one to two times per month.

“I usually do a consult for free, to see if I can help the person,” Hunter says. “If acupuncture doesn’t work, I do refer out if it’s not the answer. It all depends on how long they have been in treatment, how intense the treatment was and the case details.”

The cost is $80 to $130 per session upfront.

She provides super bills to submit to insurance, if the company covers it.

“It’s hard for me to take money from people when I’m trying to help them,” she says. “But I have to charge people because

“My whole purpose is just to end suffering the best way I can. It breaks my heart when I see people who have tried everything, and they’re left with no other options. We have so much stress in this world. I want to help people not be so miserable. I want to help them have a happy existence and reduce stress. By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski hen Mark Teahen left Major League Baseball during Spring Training of 2014, he and his wife, Lauren, took a trip to Italy to consider the sport in the European country.

“We heard from a friend in Italy that you don’t make money, but it would be a way for us to see Italy and not go broke doing it,” he says. “We thought it would be a fun way to put a cap on my playing career.”

Instead, they fell further in love with wine after stumbling upon Enoteca Falorni, a wine bar in Chianti that once housed the first major winery in the region.

“I fell in love with the culture,” he says.

“The team offered a contract, but I decided I was kind of burned out. If I’m not going to be playing for a big-league job in the United States, I figured I would take some time off.”

The most interesting to the Teahens: Enomatic wine dispensing systems. Each bottle was attached to a tap that dispensed the wine, delivering the quality equivalent to a newly opened bottle for up to four weeks. They regulated the temperature as well as the quantity by offering a full pour, a taste, or what the Italian word “sorso” means—a sip.

At Enoteca Falorni, there were 100-plus wines available to taste, organized in 13 different sections by region or type of wine.

“It was self-serve, what I like to call a ‘wine buffet,’” he says. “We purchased a card for the dollar amount we wanted, grabbed a glass and started tasting.”

Lauren adds, “It was really a unique and fun experience.”

The Teahens wanted to bring this idea to the United States, but they didn’t know

“We substituted in what might work for a wine bar,” Mark says. “We went to the (Scottsdale) Quarter and a few other locations. We weren’t married to doing it, but we found a good location at the Quarter.

We took a chance on the idea.”

Sorso Wine Room at the Scottsdale Quarter is a labor of love for the Teahens, who visit the wine bar daily. Lauren worked with the architects to create the look and feel that she and Mark wanted.

The menu evolved as they learned about wines, as has the food. Initially, the Teahens were just going to offer charcuterie boards.

The menu offers shareables like shishito peppers ($11), house citrus-marinated olives ($7) and Mediterranean nachos ($12/$16) with mozzarella, feta, basil pesto, sun dried tomato pesto, tomatoes and kalamata olives on lavash chips.

to $22) with roast beef, burrata, prosciutto de parma, salami, serrano ham, smoked salmon, mozzarella, olive tapenade, hummus, tomato, sun-dried tomato pesto, green apple, gorgonzola, mixed berries, strawberry and a rotating selection.

Salads are served ($12 to $15), and 11 “sandos” or sandwiches. The TAPP is shaved turkey breast, brie, fig jam and arugula ($14), salmon PLT ($15) with smoked salmon, pancetta, avocado, sliced tomato and mixed greens in a lemon vinaigrette.

Flatbreads wrap the menu ranging from “the usual” to “il mare” with olive oil, lump crab meat, asparagus, sliced tomato, mozzarella and lemon zest ($12 to $15).

“People still come in for the bruschetta,” he says. “‘The Dip’ does well. It’s a collection of goodness and cheese.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has been slightly challenging for Sorso, which is 6 years old.

“We turned it into a grocery store,” he says. “We had grocery store kits and stuff like that. People were extremely gracious with our tips. We’ve built a really nice community who come in and enjoy Sorso as usual. People like the atmosphere and the food.

“But it’s been an extremely tough year for everyone We made it through that first shutdown. Our staff has done a great job.

Scottsdale events evolve, reschedule, run their course

By Joan Fudala he 2020 and 2021 event seasons will take a notable place in Scottsdale history, described as “canceled, postponed, virtual, masked, socially distanced, few or no spectators and cardboard cutout fans in seats, creative, enduring and hopeful for the future.”

The global COVID-19 pandemic hit Scottsdale in March 2020—amid a booming signature event season.

Baseball Spring Training games were canceled after two weeks of play, the Scottsdale Arts Festival became a virtual event and the Scottsdale Culinary Festival was postponed to a safer time, just to name a few.

Dozens of public and private events, dinners, fundraisers and concerts were canceled or postponed indefinitely. However, as the pandemic dragged on, and public gatherings were strongly discouraged (especially indoors), event organizers got their creative juices flowing. Some events went virtual.

WestWorld became a venue for drive-in events, like the community July 4 celebration and celebrity concerts. Shopping center parking lots began hosting drive-in movies. There were drive-by graduation and birthday parades and Zoom concerts and parties.

So, in years without COVID, how have

Scottsdale’s signature events evolved, changed dates and places or run their course? Take a look, listed in order of the event’s “Scottsdale seniority” (and please note that all 2021 dates were as of December 15, and are subject to change due to COVID-19):  Parada del Sol began in November 1951 as the Sunshine Festival, an event designed to kick off Scottsdale’s tourism season. parade and barbecue were originally sponsored by the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce and the Scottsdale Riding Club, who turned the reins over to the newly formed Scottsdale Jaycees in 1954. The JCs changed the event name to Parada del Sol, moved it to January and added a rodeo in 1956. The parade route, although primarily in Old Town, has changed direction and length many times. The rodeo has moved from a vacant lot where Fashion Square now stands (1956-58), JC’s rodeo grounds near Scottsdale Stadium (1959-1984), Rawhide (1985-2005) and WestWorld (since 2005, and also in 2001). Despite the changes (no more beard-growing/shaving off contest called Whiskerino, no Parada queen and court, no Scottsdale High Beaver Band, no JC Mavericks staging a mock bank holdup, no Scottsdale Jaycees or Lazy J’s organizations), Parada remains Scottsdale’s oldest, beloved signature event, including the arrival of the Hashknife Pony Express, which began in 1959. This year, instead of its usual early February date, the 68th annual Parada del Sol Parade & Trail’s End Festival is planned for Saturday, April 17, 2021, and will be organized by the Scottsdale Charros, joining the group of volunteers who have staged it since the Jaycees disbanded in 2009 as well as the city of Scottsdale. In 1956, the show was moved to the McCormick’s ranch in Scottsdale, where they built a special Paradise Park arena and grounds to host future shows (near the southwest corner of Pima Road and Shea Boulevard). It became the premier Arabian horse show in the United States, attracting horse owners, breeders and fans. Held annual in February, the show has moved venues from the Biltmore, to the McCormick’s Ranch, to Paradise Park, to a new Paradise Park on Bell Road/60th Street, and, finally, to WestWorld in 1989. In fact, a primary purpose of establishing WestWorld (originally called Horseman’s Park and HorseWorld) was to create a permanent home for the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show and other equestrian events throughout the year. This year, within COVID-19 guidelines, the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show is scheduled for February 11 to February 21 at WestWorld. The Phoenix Open was held at Arizona Country Club in 1957 (Billy Casper), 1959 (Gene Littler), 1961 (Arnold Palmer), 1962 (Arnold Palmer), 1963 (Arnold Palmer), 1965 (Rod Funseth), 1967 (Julius Boros), 1969 (Gene Littler), 1971 (Miller Barber) and 1973 (Bruce Crampton). In 1974, the open returned for a regular run at Phoenix Country Club until it moved permanently back to Scottsdale in 1987 with the opening of the TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course. See wmphoenixopen.com to confirm dates, times and attendance guidelines.  Raising construction money by preselling season tickets to a not-yet-built ballpark, the newly formed Scottsdale Baseball Club got the “winter nest for the Baltimore Orioles” completed by November 1955, and the birds held their Spring Training in Scottsdale in March 1956. The Orioles opted for the Grapefruit League after the 1958 spring season, so the Boston Red Sox took their place at Scottsdale Stadium. During the Sox’ tenure here, the Scottsdale Baseball Club turned the responsibility for hosting Spring Training to the newly chartered Scottsdale Charros, who have continued to host spring training teams at Scottsdale Stadium ever since. The Charros return revenues generated by the games back to many community organizations and schools. The Chicago Cubs replaced the Sox, playing at Scottsdale Stadium from 1967 to 1978; they were followed by the Oakland A’s (from 1979 to 1981). The San Francisco Giants became the longest-running home team for Scottsdale when they began holding Spring Training here in 1982. Spring Training has been disrupted by players’ strikes, owner lockouts, and the absence of any Major League team here for the 1966 spring season. An arson in the 1960s and the tear-down/complete rebuild of the stadium in 1991/92 didn’t stop

See springtraining.com or mlb. com for the latest updates and attendance guidelines.  Begun in Scottsdale in 1971, the BarrettJackson Collector Car Event has been held in Scottsdale every January since 1989—bringing international acclaim and cars of fame to Scottsdale. Russ Jackson and Tom Barrett joined forces to produce their first classic car event in 1967, the “Fiesta del los Auto Elegance,” staged at the Scottsdale Ballpark. By 1971, they were producing the now famous classic car auction from tents at Scottsdale’s Safari Hotel.

Outgrowing the Safari site, for several years the car auction was held at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, that is until Mayor Drinkwater lured the show back to Scottsdale and WestWorld.

Over the years, the event has grown to two weeks in January and attracts well over 200,000 attendees. Other car auctions held during January in or near Scottsdale—Russo and Steele Collector Automobile Auction, Gooding and Company, Bonham and others—have added to the tourism draw and economic impact of the collector car phenomenon in Scottsdale for many years. Barrett-Jackson has announced it has rescheduled its annual January show to the week of March 22 at Scottsdale’s WestWorld. The February 12 to March 14, 1971, event was staged in various venues throughout Scottsdale. It featured long-time Scottsdale resident artists Philip Curtis, William Schimmel, Paolo Soleri, Agnese Udinotti, Walter Bohl and several

others; Arizona photographer Carlos Elmer; and performances of the Scottsdale-Phoenix Civic Ballet at Scottsdale High School and Phoenix Chamber Music Society at Kerr Studio. The festival also incorporated the annual Scottsdale-based National Indian Arts Exhibition and the annual Arizona DesignerCraftsman show-sale. It has continued to be held as a three-day event on Civic Center Mall every March, although snow and ice impacted it in 2006 and COVID canceled it at the last minute in 2020, turning it into a virtual, online event. Fingers crossed for the in-person 51st Annual Scottsdale Arts Festival scheduled for March. See scottsdaleartsfestival.org for dates and attendance guidelines.  Since 1978, the Scottsdale League for the Arts has presented the Scottsdale Culinary Festival, the longest-running festival of its type in the nation, according to its website.

Proceeds from the event support local arts nonprofit organizations. Last year’s event in mid-April was canceled due to COVID; see scottsdalefest.org for 2021 updates and attendance guidelines.  During December, the big white tents for

the annual Celebration of Fine Art began to rise, a Scottsdale tradition since 1989 when Ann and Tom Morrow established the show on Scottsdale road just north of Fashion Square. Now staged by their daughter, Susan Morrow Potje, it’s held on North Hayden Road just south of Loop 101. This year’s event is scheduled for January 16 to March 28; check celebrateart.com for event details and attendance guidelines.  Some of Scottsdale’s events are a pleasant part of history, no longer held here (or anywhere) for one reason or another.

Remember the National Festival of the West? The Scottsdale National Indian Arts & Crafts Exhibition? The All Indian Days Pow Wows? The October Fair carnivals? The Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf played at Grayhawk, the inaugural Skins Games played at Desert Highlands and The Tradition played at Desert Mountain? Circus Flora? The Thunderbird Balloon Classic at WestWorld in the 1990s? La Posada and the Miracle of the Roses Pageant every December at OLPH?  And who can forget one of Scottsdale’s dirtiest annual traditions…Mighty Mud Mania, which we hope will be back in 2021, COVID permitting. We’ve also enjoyed Art Walk since the 1970s and any event at the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park since 1975.

Scottsdale’s signature events are part and parcel of our lifestyle, anticipated by residents and visitors and a huge boost to Scottsdale’s economy and local nonprofits who benefit from event sponsors’ generous grants. Let’s hope for the sake of the organizers and attendees that Scottsdale’s signature events can safely be held in 2021…whether we wear masks and socially distance…or enjoy the event in front of our computer or TV screens. As history shows, no matter what the obstacle—weather, strikes, date or venue changes or even a pandemic—Scottsdale loves and attends its events! 
