After a grueling school year, Scottsdale resident Sarah Sakha will travel to Washington, D.C., this month as a U.S. Presidential Scholar.

Sakha, who graduated from Xavier College Preparatory in May, said she was nominated for the award by an anonymous teacher or organization.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, which was established in 1964, attracted approximately 3.2 million candidates this year. These candidates were evaluated on their SAT or ACT test scores, academic achievement, personal characteristics, leadership and service activities. The Commission on Presidential Scholars then chose 565 semifinalists.

Sakha was one of the semifinalists named.

Merit Scholar and a Flinn Scholar, she was also the assistant editor-in-chief of her school’s newspaper winning state and national awards for her work.

“It had its ups and downs,” she said of her final year in high school. “It was pretty grueling to keep grades up and submitting apps and finding out where you got in (college.) It was bittersweet at the end.”

Her achievement went beyond the classroom in Arizona and into Tehran, Iran, where she traveled every summer to mentor and teach English to orphaned and handicapped young girls and women.

“I’ve been doing this for four summers now, and it’s truly an indelibly formative experience,” she said.

By Meghan McCoy In an effort to raise awareness of scorpion problems in the Valley, one business is hosting a contest with a $1,000 cash prize for the Creepiest Scorpion Encounter.

Jim LaBrie, co-owner of Scottsdale’s Bug and Weed Mart, said he decided to hold the contest because scorpions are a problem for a good percentage of Valley folks.

Participants are asked to submit a 250 word or less description of their scorpion encounter with an original photo or video. The footage can showcase an up-close look of the actual

scorpion, a theatrical reenactment or a retelling of the story. Those who submit an entry are encouraged to make it creative and compelling.

Scorpions, he said, begin making appearances once the weather warms up, which typically is from February until November. With an early spring this year, LaBrie said there was scorpion activity in January.

“Generally the season is about nine to 10 months,” he said. “Thirty-five years ago, it was the first of March to about the end of October.”

The easiest way to decrease the activity of scorpions is to make sure entry ways are reduced of clutter. He said people should get rid of such clutter as leaves, twigs and stacks of wood, as well as keeping shrubs trimmed.

Preventative measures can be taken by using granulators and sprays for an invisible barrier around the building, which is odorless and does not bother pets, people or plants. Areas where bugs like to hide, such as door frames, sidewalks and the edge of patios, should be sprayed.

“We have stores that sell the actual chemicals,” LaBrie said. “Each of the managers are trained to show each person how to use them.”

LaBrie said when individuals are shown how to use the chemical, the results are significantly better and far less expensive to treat the problem.

He said the rule of thumb is if individuals treat with granules four times a year and spray eight times a year they will virtually be bug free.

The contest is open to all Maricopa County residents, 18 years old or older, except employees of landscaping or pest control companies. All submissions should be sent to contest@bugweedmart. com with a typed description in the body of the email, the photo either attached or embedded in the email and a video link. The deadline is 12 a.m. Wednesday, June 25.

The submissions will be uploaded to Facebook and Twitter and a confirmation email will be sent to the participant with a link to the social media website. Finalists will be chosen based on the number of Facebook “likes” and retweets on Twitter.

The winner will be announced the week of June 30.

WestWorld in Scottsdale is hoping to create a new holiday tradition for Valley residents when it hosts the first Scottsdale 4th of July at WestWorld from 2 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Independence Day. WestWorld is partnering with two companies—M Catering by Michael’s and the R Entertainment Co.—to deliver an entire day of fun with an array of interactive games, food and family entertainment inside the venue’s airconditioned north hall. The day will culminate with a traditional fireworks show set against the McDowell Mountains.

“We’re happy to offer a patriotic, allages event the entire family can enjoy, in temperature-cooled surroundings to boot,” said Brian Dygert, WestWorld general manager.

Radio Disney Junior will be on site with free interactive entertainment, including five fun Disney Junior stations that feature dressing the part as a prince or princess at a Princess Sofia station; bringing a favorite toy for a checkup at the Doc McStuffins

station; and searching for hidden treasures at the Jake and the Neverland Pirates station.

There will also be free half-pipe and quarter-pipe BMX and skateboard shows featuring former X Games athletes. For toddlers, free playtime includes a “Sesame Street” Jump House and a chance to build and “race” a LEGO car on a LEGO track.

Rounding out the entertainment will be face painting, live music, a Budweiser Beer Garden and even an ice cream village featuring Cold Stone Creamery and Haagen-Dazs.

Tickets in advance are $10 for general admission or $5 for Scottsdale residents. Children 6 and younger are free. Food and play zone games are $20 for the first wristband and $10 for each additional wristband. Parking is $5. Scottsdale Having Fun Before World War II, when Scottsdale was a small agricultural hamlet and modern air conditioning had yet not reached Valley homes, life in this sun and canal-filled paradise required adaptation. Still, as these pictures attest, locals and visitors alike managed to have loads of fun.

One especially popular pastime in the early 20th century for Scottsdale residents was cooling off in the canals, which were the sites of “swimming parties,” complete with bonfires to roast hot dogs and marshmallows, said Michelle Bickert and Amy Long in “Salt River Stories” (www.saltriverstories.org).

The Topgolf golf concept involves players hitting balls, with imbedded microchips from 102 climatecontrolled hitting stations, to an orchestrated outfield of targets. There are interactive displays and automatic golf ball feeds to make the experience even more accessible.

Topgolf is anticipating that its unique blend of golf, entertainment, culinary and beverage options will delight some half a million visitors in its first full

year. The commercial impact for not only the Scottsdale area, but the Salt River Maricopa Indian Community is extensive as well, with estimates of over $260 million in economic impact during a 10-year window according to the CEO. This business is here to stay and Leverton knows it: “At Topgolf, whether you have swung a million times or none, you can have fun, eat great foods, enjoy our drink menu, and be with friends.”

OdySea in the Desert, the 35-acre, multimillion dollar entertainment complex under development on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Reservation, is slated to break ground on the next phase of the project, OdySea Aquarium, this summer.

With a planned opening in fall 2015, OdySea will be the largest aquarium in the Southwest and promises a state-of the-art facility in the unlikely setting of the Sonoran desert. The 16-acre attraction, designed to accommodate up to 15,000 visitors daily, will join Butterfly Wonderland and OdySea Mirror Maze as the third destination attraction of the entertainment district.

OdySea Aquarium will have two levels spanning over 200,000 square feet. Planners say visitors will move between levels via acrylic tunnels while viewing some of the most fascinating animals of rivers and oceans in the world. Among the features planned is the SeaTREK experience, which allows guests to descend deep into the “ocean” where they will be surrounded by sea

The OdySea Aquarium will also include a Lighthouse Café serving a full menu and light snacks and an OdySea Treasures Gift Shop. Additionally, the facility will accommodate private events up to several hundred guests.

“The OdySea Aquarium in Scottsdale will offer the very latest in technology and will have a futuristic entertainment component that goes far beyond delivering a standard aquarium experience,” Knishinsky said.

“We are hopeful that visitors from across the country will want to add this to their ‘must do’ Arizona itinerary.”

Knishinsky, Martin Pollack and Rubin Stahl are the development and management team behind the Butterfly Wonderland and Mirror Maze attractions that opened in

the complex in 2013. The trio were also responsible for the Newport Aquarium in Kentucky, which was named a top aquarium in a readers poll published by USA Today.

Other future attractions planned for OdySea in the Desert include an IMAX Theater, an “Arizona Experience,” a Ripley’s Believe It Or Not museum, retail shops and a “Taste of the World” culinary showcase of international restaurants.

The upcoming OdySea Aquarium will be a for-profit facility employing more than 250 individuals with nonprofit component administering all the educational programs and services. A sampling of the planned exhibits includes Rivers of the World, American Rivers, Amazon Rivers, Shores, Penguins, the Great Barrier Reef, and “the Bizarre and the Beautiful,” including jellyfish, octopus, large king crabs and seahorses.

Educational media boards, placed throughout the facility, will provide hands-on experiences, illuminated world maps and sounds from different regions all over the globe.

July 4th Fireworks Cause for Concern, Precautions

They create the collective oohs and ahs from the crowd as they light up the sky. Fireworks are a time-honored tradition for the Fourth of July, and even the biggest kid enjoys setting them off or writing his name in the air with a sparkler. But, they can also be dangerous if not handled properly.

Jim Ford, Scottsdale Fire Department fire marshal since 1989, said that because of recent legislation, fireworks laws have changed so that Maricopa County cannot restrict use within its jurisdiction.

One-third of Scottsdale is preserve land and another one-third has environmental overlay for landscaping and natural areas, so cause for concern for use of fireworks is high

in Scottsdale. Ford explained that the use of fireworks around these areas is a high risk for fires.

“We always close our preserve on the Fourth of July because we don’t want anybody going in there and setting something off.”

Fireworks are allowed in Scottsdale on private property, Ford said, with the property owner’s approval. Use of fireworks is prohibited on City property which would include parks, streets and schools.

Use of fireworks is only allowed in Maricopa County from Tuesday, June 24, through Sunday, July 6. Sales of fireworks are permitted through July 6.

Besides closing the preserves for Fourth of July, Ford said there are

other precautions that consumers should take when using fireworks.

There is also a right way and wrong way to use fireworks. “They’re just not harmless little things.”

Summer can be a drain on your energy bills, especially here in Arizona, however there are some things that you can do to offset the seasonal impact on your pocketbook.

These DIY projects will help you save on summer cooling costs to keep your home’s temperature down during the hot season.

• Add Some Green Around Your Home. Provide natural shade to your home by planting trees and bushes. You especially want shade that falls directly on windows and doors to block the harsh summer sun. This will help to diffuse the heat and keep your home a bit cooler.

• Create Artificial Shade. Consider installing awnings above windows that face the sun. Awnings that can be rolled up or down offer the choice of letting in the sun versus keeping the windows in the shade.

Watermelon Cake and Strawberry Pie It’s July and we’re looking for ways to stay cool, eat lighter and maybe give the slow cooked oven recipes a rest. The heck if I’m going to give up my sweets, though.

So what better way to kick off July than with two scrumptious desserts that require very little effort? Watermelon cake is all the rage online these days. I have to admit that I was not a believer

that you could actually frost a real watermelon and decorate it like an actual cake. But you can, if you follow my instructions, and I think you’re going to love it!

The second recipe for strawberry pie is an all-American favorite and this recipe really brings out the true flavor of fresh strawberries.

Watermelon Cake with Whipped Cream Frosting 1 watermelon Fruit for garnish: (1 pint blueberries, 1 pint strawberries, 6-7 Kiwi, 2 cups grapes, 1 large orange) 2 pints whipping cream (or more for large watermelon) 1 small (3oz) package Jell-O Instant Vanilla Pudding 2-3 tablespoons powdered sugar

Cut rind off entire watermelon.

Make a slice through the bottom to make a base so it will remain steady on a plate. Cut watermelon the size and shape you want your cake. (A flat top cake is easier to garnish with fruit.)

Pack paper towels around the entire watermelon to soak up watermelon

For the Stabilized Whipped Cream Frosting: For each cup of whipped cream used, add 1 tablespoon of instant vanilla pudding and 1 tablespoon of powdered sugar. For sweeter frosting, add more powdered sugar.

Whip together until stiff peaks form. Frost cake with spatula or place frosting in piping bag with large star tip. (I use a 14- or 16-inch piping bag.) Garnish with fresh fruit and slice in wedges. Serve immediately.

Strawberry Pie

1 deep dish pie shell plus 2 teaspoons sugar 6 cups quart fresh strawberries 1 cup white sugar 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 3 tablespoons cornstarch 3/4 cup cold water 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1 heaping tablespoon powdered sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of sugar over pie shell and bake for about 15 minutes or until lightly golden brown. When done, arrange 4 cups of whole strawberries in pie shell, point up.

With a small food processor, fork or potato masher, thoroughly puree

remaining 2 cups strawberries and combine with cup of sugar in a medium saucepan. Add lemon juice.

Cook over medium heat and bring to a boil, stirring frequently.

In a small bowl or measuring cup, whisk together cornstarch and water.

Gradually stir cornstarch mixture into boiling strawberry mixture.

Reduce heat and simmer mixture until thickened, about 5-6 minutes, stirring often. Pour mixture over berries in pastry shell. Chill for several hours before serving. In a small bowl, whip cream and powdered sugar until firm peaks form. Serve each slice of pie with a dollop of whipped cream.

Phillips ‘Itching’ to Hit the Road

By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Phillip Phillips is going “a little crazy.” He’s been home on and off for the past few weeks, after touring with John Mayer and Matchbox Twenty.

He can’t wait to hit the stage again.

“I’ve been itching to get on tour and everything,” a jovial Phillips said via telephone. “I haven’t been able to jam with my band.”

Phillips, who won the 11th season of “American Idol,” is taking to the road to support his latest album “Behind the Light,” which features the single “Raging Fire.”

“I really love it,” he explained about the song, which debuted at No. 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 after selling 74,000 digital copies. “It’s fun to play live. We wrote that song pretty quickly. We had the idea then we went and started something else. I said, ‘Let’s go back to that.’ We wrote it in four to five days, if that, probably less. We turned in a rough version of the song to the label and they said, ‘Well, this is awesome. We want to put this out next Tuesday. We had three to four days to finish it, master and mix it. It was crazy, so super fast.

But it was good and I’m so proud of that song.”

For the collection, Phillips was able to experiment a bit more, after having rushed through his first post“American Idol” release “The World from the Side of the Moon.” The album was nevertheless successful, having spawned the hits “Home” and “Gone, Gone, Gone.”

“It’s similar, but it’s different,” Phillips said of “Behind the Light.”

“It’s more mature. You can tell there’s a lot of growth there. It’s a little bit

deeper as well, lyrically. It takes you into a deeper side of things. Everyone goes through things in life, whether someone knows it or not. I think the lyrics really speak well on this album.

“From the first song ‘Searchlight’ to ‘Midnight Sun,’ it’s about life in general. I’m still young—only 23— but being out on the road for a couple years straight, every time you get to go home, you see the age in all your family and friends. Then, you look at yourself in the mirror and say, ‘I guess I’ve gotten older as well.’ That’s what this album is about.”

Phillips will perform tracks from the album when he headlines Salt River Fields on Thursday, July 3. A native of Leesburg, Georgia, Phillips feels very blessed that he’s been able to spend so much time on the road.

He’s created some strong friendships throughout the learning process.

“It’s hard to say who I learned the most from because John Mayer, he was so busy, but we got to hang out a little bit,” he said. “Rob Thomas was a great guy. They had a lot of great advice and they really respected how I played music. They were really nice to me and great with my whole crew.

If I did ask them anything, they would say keep doing what you’re doing and keep making the right decisions.”

Put Your Kid’s Acting Skills to Work Act One Youth Theater in Scottsdale is looking for kids with talent for a musical production of “Disney’s Sleeping Beauty—Kids!”

Youths from ages 8 to 19 are invited to audition on Wednesday, Sept. 3, for a production of Disney’s version of the classic fairytale.
