West Valley development the focus of summit

Nearly 50% of Maricopa County’s growth over the next 25 years is projected to occur in the West Valley.

In order to accommodate a population growth of more than 1 million people, according to John Graham — WESTMARC board member and Sunbelt Holdings president and CEO — economic development strategies are focusing on infrastructure, roads, water and sewer.

Graham gathered alongside other WESTMARC members, elected officials and expert speakers at the 2019 Econom-

ic Development Summit on May 15 to discuss future growth in the West Valley and learn about water, transportation and other developments needed to sustain that growth.

WESTMARC, also known as the Western Maricopa Coalition, is a public-private partnership of the West Valley’s business and education sectors founded in 1990.

The coalition’s membership is comprised of the cities of Avondale, Buckeye, El Mirage, Gila Bend, Glendale, Goodyear, Litchfield Park, Peoria, Phoenix, Sun City, Sun City West, Surprise, Tolleson, Wickenburg and Youngtown.

Graham added that WESTMARC is also working on strategies to attract Class A office space — the highest-quality office space — and connect with advanced industries to generate jobs and retain workers in the West Valley. Because 62% of the West Valley’s workforce commutes to jobs in other parts of Maricopa County, strengthening the job market is mission-critical, Graham said.

A fifth-grade schoolteacher is in custody after he was accused by three students of inappropriately touching them during class.

Ricky Ordway, 43, was arrested by Peoria police and charged with five counts of child molestation and one count of sexual abuse of minors.

According to the police report, the Sun Valley Elementary School principal notified officers May 7 about the accusations.

During the investigation it was discovered that the alleged abuse by Ordway may have gone on for years.

Water resources experts at the summit also expressed optimism about the future — the future of water, that is.

Cape Powers, Peoria’s planning and operations manager, said a tremendous amount of work has gone into securing water in central Arizona.

“When you look at SRP, the infrastructure that’s put in place there; when you look at CAP and the canal and all of that; and then there’s the groundwater; all the redundancy; the long-term storage credits and all that that’s gone into it, you feel better and better about it over time,” Powers said.

A community meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, to discuss the future plans of Peoria’s historic Old Town area. Residents will learn about

The report says an 11-year-old female victim told officers that in February she “was sitting at Ordway’s desk when he pulled up her dress and underwear and touched her” while in class.

“After rubbing the victim’s leg, he touched her (inappropriately),” the report continued. The victim said it felt “weird” and she was uncomfortable and didn’t like it when (Ordway) touched her.

The second victim told police that since September, Ordway had “called her up to his desk, unbuttoned her pants and touched her several times.”

The third victim told officers that Ordway reached into her bra several times since last year.

Ordway was arrested without incident at the Peoria Police Unified School District office. He has worked for the district since August 2016, and has been on paid administrative leave since May 8.

One parent, who asked not to be identified but claimed her daughter was in his class, said she once thought Ordway was a “great teacher,” but is now worried about the charges he faces.

“My kid has been in his class all year and now I am scared to death about this,” the parent said. “My daughter

said nothing happened, but I don’t know and I am terrified. He better hope he didn’t touch my daughter.”

The parent said her daughter was also part of a softball team that Ordway coached.

“When I got the call, I had no idea it could be (Ordway) and I was shocked,” the parent said.

The morning Ordway was arrested, Sun Valley officials sent parents a an email acknowledging his arrest and the accusations.

The statement read, “A student

and parent brought allegations of inappropriate conduct to our attention and we immediately notified the Peoria Police Department. We also notified our fifth-grade families that Mr. Ordway would not be returning to class due to a personnel matter.”

The letter to parents continued, “We share this with you today, as you may see this news play out publicly. We want you to know that the safety and well-being of our students always has, and always will, remain our number one priority. Our immediate focus is to ensure that we maintain quality instruction and student support through the end of the year.”

Ordway has been booked into the Maricopa County Jail and could face more charges pending further investigation.

During his initial court appearance, Ordway said he had never been in any kind of trouble. His bond was ultimately set at $150,000, and if released he will be required to wear a GPS tracking device.

Law enforcement agencies enforcing seatbelt use

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF In an effort to save more lives on Arizona roadways this month the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is partnering with local law enforcement agencies to enforce Arizona seatbelt and child safety seat laws.

Arizona presently conducts enforcement under a secondary seat belt law and a primary child safety/ booster seat law.The enforcement campaign is based upon high visibility traffic enforcement with a “zerotolerance” approach toward seatbelt and child safety seat usage.

As part of a the national “Click It or Ticket” seatbelt enforcement campaign, law enforcement agencies across the state will be stepping up traffic enforcement patrols and increasing other enforcement efforts to drive home an important message: “Buckle Up …It’s the Law!” Regular seatbelt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle

crashes. When worn correctly, seatbelts have proven to reduce serious crashrelated injuries and deaths by about 50%. The proper and consistent use of child safety seats has been found to reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71% for infants (younger than 1 year old) and by 54% for toddlers (1 to 4 years old) in passenger cars. Properly installed booster seats reduce the risk

for serious injury by 45% among children ages 4 to 8 years old.

Despite widespread efforts to educate drivers about the importance of wearing seatbelts, motor-vehicle collisions continue to be the leading cause of death and serious injuries to the citizens of Arizona.

The enforcement mobilization will run through June 2.

Peoria among new WV hotels in the works

In the midst of preparations for the 2023 Super Bowl, the Valley appears to be solving one of the main issues faced during the 2015 game: hotel rooms.

Glendale currently has a total of 1,595 rooms across 13 hotels, but city officials say they are aiming for more than 2,000 rooms as they continue to attract large-scale entertainment events.

And across the Valley numerous other projects are in the pipeline that will add more than 1,300 rooms to the 5,615 currently available rooms.

Scottsdale, Phoenix, Goodyear, Peoria and Avondale all have hotels either under construction or in the planning phase.

In the West Valley, Springhill Suites and Tru by Hilton will add a combined 178 rooms to Goodyear when it opens in 2020.

Nearby, in Avondale, a 130-room Springhill Suites by Marriott is in the works. And over in Surprise, Hilton Garden Inn recently added 124 rooms near the baseball stadium.

Next door to Glendale, Peoria has two Marriott hotels — a Fairfield Inn (95 rooms) and TownePlace Suites

(103 rooms) — planned for the area near 75th Avenue and Paradise Lane.

And with Glendale also adding hotels in anticipation of 2023’s Super Bowl LVII, the issue faced at the 2008 and 2015 games may be on the mend.

In 2013 NFL officials mentioned they wanted a certain number of hotel rooms committed for the league’s use in exchange for guaranteed rates.

Now, the city is expected to have enough rooms to satisfy the league, with Aloft Hotels opening soon near Westgate, and Hilton Inn by Intercon-

tinental Hotels Group (IHG) coming near Topgolf, at 99th Avenue and Cardinals Way. Plans have been submitted for a third hotel, too, according to city staff.

The new Holiday Inn has been in the city pipeline for months, but only recently broke ground.

“We made some changes during the design phase that extended the predevelopment timeline, but our goal is always to provide a product that will maximize value to the community,” said Tim Rutjes, managing member for

SRK Development LLC and Slowey Management.

“We are willing to sacrifice the time necessary for us to feel confident that we have met that objective.”

The Holiday Inn by IHG will add 126 rooms with single- and double-king suites available, along with the fastest internet speeds and initiatives that will lower energy and water consumption.

As part of the Benevilla C.A.R.E.S. Educational Event Series, the Surprise-based nonprofit human services agency will host a free educational workshop that discusses communication with those challenged by memory loss.

The free workshop will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, at the main campus in Surprise, located in the Hellen and John M. Jacobs Independence Plaza at 16752 N. Greasewood Street.

This workshop, part of the Benevilla C.A.R.E.S. Educational Event Series, is titled “Learning the Language: Communication and Memory Loss.”

It features two expert memory and communication specialists from Avenir Memory Care at Surprise and Royal Oaks Retirement Community.

They will share important tips and offer guidance on dealing with chal-

lenging behaviors and how to interpret and intervene in stressful situations.

The free event series offers expert speakers from vetted local senior companies on a variety of topics ranging from estate and tax information to area resources for health care and more.

Park West center debuts new splash pad

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF As temperatures are heating up for the summer, the Valley has a new way to keep cool: Park West’s splash pad is now open to the public.

The water feature, in the shape of an agave flower, mimicking the redesigned logo of Park West, is at the center of the premier family-friendly shopping and entertainment destination. It’s one of the main components of Commercial Investment Real Estate (CIRE) Equity’s $4 million renovation of the Peoria shopping center.

“We have always envisioned Park West to evolve into a regional shopping and entertainment destination capable of bringing people together through safe and interactive experiences,” said Jill Kobe, director of property management at San Diego-based CIRE Equity.

“The opening of our splash pad is a major milestone in achieving this. We hope that it becomes a public gathering spot, where meeting new people and reconnecting with friends and neighbors is the norm.”

The amenity is surrounded by tables and chairs for adults to relax while children enjoy water play. The splash pad is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Park West is planning to add large format yard games and family-friendly events to the area.

“It’s an exciting time to be in Peoria. We are creating the fu-

ture that serves our residents of today and those still to come,” Mayor Cathy Carlat said.

“It is a pleasure to watch the progress and success of CIRE as they enhance the places and spaces that contribute to our healthy lifestyle and prosperous economy.”

Christmas parade funds presented to local food bank

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF The sixth annual Hometown Christmas Parade was held December 8 in downtown Glendale to celebrate the true star of Christmas and support the Hope for Hunger Food Bank.

Because of the community’s support and sponsors the parade was able to raise $11,200 in support of Hope for Hunger.

So, the parade committee recently presented the organization with the proceeds.

In addition to the cash donation, the Hometown Christmas Parade worked with numerous local businesses and parade spectators to collect more than 38,000 pounds of nonperishable food donations.

The Hope For Hunger Food Bank is critical for Glendale, as 23% of the city’s residents live beneath the poverty line.

Phoenix Rescue Mission provides Christ-centered, life-transforming solutions to persons facing hunger and homelessness. The nonprofit Mission, which has been operating since 1952, is asking the public for support of its many programs designed to save lives, including Hope Coach Street Outreach,

Homeless Emergency Services, Men’s Addiction Recovery Program and the new Changing Lives Center for Women and Children.

The Hometown Christmas Parade is produced by a group of citizens who make up the Hometown Christmas Parade Committee. Each year the parade invites attendees, sponsors and participants support Hope for Hunger as part of its mission to give back.

Board of supervisors OKs tentative FY 2020 budget

With a new decade on the horizon, the nation’s fastest-growing county is making smart investments to further position itself as an attractive, longterm home for families and businesses.

On May 20, the Board of Supervisors approved a tentative $2.57 billion budget for fiscal year 2020.

“This fiscally responsible and sustainable budget keeps the tax rate steady for our residents while investing in the kinds of technology and infrastructure that works to serve citizens better,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Bill Gates, District 3.

“These investments include strengthening public safety, improving the voter experience, preserving and enhancing our open space, and utilizing technology and process improvement to save money and make our county government more efficient while providing better service. I am grateful to my colleagues on the board and to all departments for budgeting in a way that plans for, and protects, the future.”

With the 2020 elections fast approaching, the budget reserves funding for updated elections equipment that is expected to increase the speed with which votes can be counted. Improved technology is one piece of a larger discussion about the future of elections in Maricopa County.

“Making our elections the best they can be is a priority of every person on this board,” said Vice Chairman Clint Hickman, District 4. “Modern, reliable equipment is essential for a county of our size so we can efficiently handle the potential record number of voters participating in our democracy in the 2020 elections and beyond.”

Recent numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau show Maricopa County added 81,244 people between July 2017 and July 2018, the most of any county in the nation. The FY 2020 bud-

get allocates $296.9 million for capital improvement projects which will modernize the infrastructure needed to support that growing population. Those projects include multimillion-dollar investments in county parks; a new East Valley animal shelter; and a new substation for the Sheriff’s Office in Avondale. The budget also provides continued funding for the new jail intake facility, Southeast Regional Justice Center, Central Court building, and 225 Madison renovation project, which will turn an old jail into modern, usable office space.

“I am proud to be part of the team that continues to pass budgets that protect our taxpayers while serving the needs of our ever-growing county population,” said Supervisor Jack Sellers, District 1.

“This budget will assure the protection and well-being of our citizens.

I’m pleased the tax rate won’t change, nor is the county required to take on debt to fund operations.”

At a time when many other counties are taxing as much as they are allowed by state law, Maricopa County’s tax levy is $140.5 million below the maximum.

“We live in the most dynamic county in the United States where people tend to have a lower cost of living and pay less for government services than they do in other large metropolitan areas, while also having access to diverse job and recreational opportunities,” said Supervisor Steve Chucri, District 2.

“This budget supports the Maricopa County of the future by building on a great foundation of innovative planning and fiscal intelligence to move us forward.”

• $1.5 million to continue the current model of animal shelter operations that has resulted in a 95% save rate • $1.5 million for process and technology improvements that support the strategic goal of becoming an all-digital county by 2022 • $100,000 to update unincorporated area plans for the next generation • Three new positions for the county’s Innovation Studio, focused on process improvement that in 2018 saved an estimated $1.5 million • Full-time, permanent homeless coordinator to support regional solutions to homelessness through Human Services Department “Investments in county staff directly

The public will be able to comment on the tentative budget between now and the final vote, which is scheduled for June 24.

Rutjes said the company is eager to get the project open but was quick to add they are eager for long-term success in the city.

“It is just one in an exhaustive list of reasons why we want to be involved in the Glendale community.”

One of the highlights of the new location will be a rooftop restaurant that will provide views of the city, including Topgolf and State Farm Stadium.

“We made some changes during the

design phase that extended the predevelopment timeline. But our goal is always to provide a product that will maximize value to the community, and we were willing to sacrifice the time necessary for us to feel confident we’ve met that objective,” Rutjes said.

“Additionally, the added rigor during predevelopment allows us to avoid costly changes down the road and results in optimal construction pace and cost efficiency. We are now in discussions with several nationally branded franchises, and we are still deciding how we can best serve the Glendale community.”

As the Holiday Inn needed the redesign to ensure the restaurant work in the Arizona heat, Rutjes said city staff was quick to assist them in every way they needed to make the project work. “(Glendale’s Economic Development) were an incredibly valuable resource in the development of this project,” Rutjes said.

“Every community has an economic development department, but Glendale’s is probably the hardest working and most effective team I’ve worked with.”

Woman ‘moving’ Mount Washington for multiple myeloma

It happened rather suddenly.

One day Melissa Pineo and her sister, Carol, were active as ever. Over the following weeks, however, Carol began to develop excruciating back pain.

So, she had an MRI. It revealed she had several compression fractures in her spine and many other lesions.

After just six weeks in pain, Carol had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma.

“She was very active. This happened I think around January 28 last year, and the Thanksgiving right before that she was visiting me in Arizona and we were hiking and riding bikes and things like that. It’s hard to see her like that,” said Melissa, who lives in Peoria. Carol still lives back in their home state of Massachusetts.

Multiple myeloma, according to the Mayo Clinic, is a type of cancer that forms in plasma cells, a type of white blood cell.

Though plasma cells traditionally help fight infections by creating antibodies to ward off germs, under the duress of multiple myeloma these cells accumulate in bone marrow, effectively crowding out the healthy blood cells.

These cancerous cells then cause complications by producing abnormal proteins, the Mayo Clinic reports.

Now, nearly a year and half after the early 2018 diagnosis, however, Melissa is looking up — and aiming to put an end to the cancer that has affected her sister so severely.

Melissa has signed up with Moving Mountains for Multiple Myeloma. The joint initiative between the Multiple Myeloma Researching Foundation, CURE Media Group and Celgene allows teams of people to hike challenging mountains to raise awareness and money for multiple myeloma.

Over the span of three days, from June 28 through June 30, Melissa will be part of a 22-person team of multiple myeloma patients, caregivers, nurses and doctors that will climb more than 4,000 feet of elevation.

The focus of their trek will be Mount Washington, the highest peak in northeastern United States and most prominent peak east of the Mississippi. The

Bonnie Moore, Melissa’s longtime friend since middle school who lives back in Massachusetts, will join her. An avid hiker, as Melissa described, Moore has always been there for her and Carol, and immediately offered to lend a hand in the battle against multiple myeloma.

He compared it to diabetes or high blood pressure, where you can kind of maintain the disease. It will never go away at this point, but for some after a stem cell transplant it can be managed using chemos and strong drugs like that. But it can be held at bay.”

Compare that to when the initial diagnosis was received.

“I think that definitely when (Carol) was first diagnosed I had people come up to me and say that their relative, whoever it was, had been diagnosed 10 years ago and was dead within a month and things like that,” Melissa said.

Carol is more to Melissa than just a sister, however. Melissa describes her as a friend, mother figure, role model and inspiration.

The two grew up back in Massachusetts. Melissa was the “baby of the family,” while Carol — the closest in age to Melissa out of their siblings — is seven years older.

“Carol became not just my big sister, but kind of a mom figure,” Melissa said. “And we have everything in common, too, like love of sports and love doing things outdoors.”

That love of sports and the outdoors may prove useful for Melissa, who has a little over a month left until the hike.

But now she must get in a preparative mindset. She has been running, biking and swimming, and said she is also trying to hit hiking spots like Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak.

“Even though they’re your shorter hikes, they’re brutally steep,” she said.

The Peoria Chamber of Commerce knows that, as on Friday, June 14, officials will celebrate its 100th anniversary at the return of the organization’s annual awards banquet.

The event will be from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Rio Vista Community Center, 8866 W. Thunderbird Road, in the Riverside Room.

Tickets cost $60. Two tickets can be purchased for a discounted $110.

The program will begin with a cocktail hour and feature live music, catered dinner and a special presentation from Salt River Project. The history

of Peoria and the chamber’s role in its progress from 1919 until it was incorporated in 1954 will be celebrated through photographs, videos and guest speakers.

Award categories include Business of the Year, Community Volunteer of the Year, Nonprofit of the Year and Chamber Member of the Year.

Sponsorships are available starting at $250 and increasing to $7,500.

Seating is limited, and chamber officials expect it to fill up early, so advance registration is required.

Two people injured after vehicle containing tar catches fire

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF Two people were injured after a commercial vehicle containing tar caught fire recently, according to reports.

Peoria Fire-Medical spokesman Mike Selmer confirmed Peoria and Glendale units responded to the scene.

The incident occurred in a parking lot on the south side of 77th Avenue and Bell Road in Peoria May 15.

One of the individuals in the car sustained “significant burns,” while the other’s burns were minor, Selmer told Peoria Times by email.

The more severely injured person was taken to the hospital on advanced life support, but the second signed refusal.

Selmer said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but an investigation is underway.

Blood donors around the Memorial Day holiday will help kids like Hayley, who will celebrate her 19th birthday on May 31, thanks to 95 blood donors.

She was born with Diamond Blackfan anemia, a rare disease that prevented her body from producing red blood cells. She relied on the kindness of strangers to provide lifesaving blood transfusions every month at Phoenix Children’s Hospital until she was able to receive a bone marrow transplant.

“Blood donors allowed our daughter to play, jump and laugh like other children — and gave her the chance to grow up,” said her mom, Melana.

“They are true heroes.”

I’m grateful for my mother’s choice, but…

We talked about it, my mother and I, back when I was a teenager. How she felt in the fall of 1964, a New York City girl just graduated from high school at the age of 17 who found herself pregnant.

They were dating then, my mother and father, and had been through high school. The Beatles were ringing up No. 1 hits. “My Fair Lady” was big at the box office. The Gulf of Tonkin resolution had escalated tensions over Vietnam. Lyndon Johnson was slugging it out with Barry Goldwater for the presidency.

My father was 18. He worked at a bike shop, made deliveries for a pharmacy and took college classes at night. The two teenagers had a few discussions. Then one night they got in the car and eloped to Elkton, a small city in Maryland.

There would be no abortion.

“There was a place you could go get one,” my mother would tell me.

“It wasn’t legal, but I had friends who went. Your father and I talked about it.

We decided to get married.”

This was the time before Roe v.

Wade, of course; a time of hidden medical procedures and stories tinged with blood. I thought a lot about those

times last week, when Alabama became the latest state to enact a near-total ban on abortions.

Under this new law — meant to provoke a legal fight up to the U.S. Supreme Court — all abortions would be illegal except “in cases where abortion is necessary in order to prevent a serious health risk to the unborn child’s mother.” Alabama’s legislators made no exception for pregnancies caused by rape or by incest.

It is a law with which I disagree, not because I disrespect life, but because I believe life cannot be defined as life until a fetus can live viably outside the womb, either with medical intervention or without.

Given that doctors and scientists put the age of viability at somewhere between 20 and 24 weeks postconception, I believe abortion should remain legal until that point in time — and beyond in cases of sexual assault, incest or serious medical risk to the mother.

Of course, I am also a man. As such, my say in a woman’s right to choose carries less weight than that of the human beings who carry fetuses until birth.

Up until today, 54 years and counting, I have never once been a part of a conversation like the talks my parents had in the fall of 1964.

I would choose as my parents did, on the side of having the baby. But let’s be real: Speculation about decisions hardly carries the same stakes as facing the decision itself.

This will sound passing strange, but more than once I thanked my mother for choosing as she did, to give birth to me.

I admire the choice she made, though — and this is the strange part — I told her I would have forgiven her for choosing to have an illegal abortion.

Granting me life was the original gift my parents gave me, and it was made all the more valuable by the two of

them having made the express choice to have me.

You can disagree. You can say life is so sacred the laws of man must protect it. And I will respect your argument, even though I disagree about the moment when life begins.

Personally, I prefer to view my life as a choice made by two teenagers in love, rather than the byproduct of a few politicians forcing their views onto a terrified and unwilling 17-year-old girl.

Rep. Debbie Lesko: Medicare for none

Does Medicare for All provide free health care to illegal immigrants? That is the question I asked in the House Rules Committee hearing late last month. The disturbing answer was, yes, Medicare for All, the Democrats’ push for a government-controlled, one-sizefits-all health plan, will indeed provide free health care to illegal immigrants at the American taxpayers’ expense.

If that is not bad enough, consider this: all private health insurance, all Medicare Advantage plans, and even the current Medicare program would be eliminated, while still carrying a price tag of over $32 trillion with no plan on how to pay for it. Medicare for All is a shift away from the marketbased health care system toward a government-run, socialist health care system that will inevitably require rationing of care, increasingly higher taxes, and an overall reduction of quality.

Medicare for All would eliminate

all Medicare Advantage programs.

In Arizona’s eighth district, 44% of seniors, 70,000 seniors, utilize Medicare Advantage.

Seniors would be forced to move out of a program they have paid into their entire lives to enter a mandatory government program in which every American would be competing for their hard-earned health care. Not only is this system unfair, but it jeopardizes the health care of millions of senior citizens. I believe our seniors deserve reliable and superior medical care at affordable prices.

Medicare for All would terminate employer-sponsored health care, forcing 158 million Americans who receive their health care through their job or union into a plan chosen by the federal government. About 75% of Americans are satisfied with their current private health care plans and would be forced to leave these plans for a lower quality, more costly government health care plan.

that is best for themselves and their families. Medicare for All will take this choice away from you and your family.

The expansion of Medicare, a program that is already at risk, would be dangerous. If every American were put on Medicare, like this legislation would require, experts say that Americans’ income tax rates would have to double, making it the largest tax increase in modern American history.

That means your taxes will double to cover the cost of free health care for illegal immigrants.

I am committed to working together to build on proven solutions to lower health care costs for American families. I will not support legislation, like Medicare for All, that threatens the health of seniors, strips hard-working Americans of their health care freedom and forces hard-working Americans to pay for illegal immigrants’ health care. I urge my Democrat colleagues in Congress to change their minds and stop this government takeover of our entire health care system and work with Republicans to create viable health

care options for the American people.

Tolby: Good people doing good things

I sat down at my favorite watering hole “Bitzee Mamas,” and across from me was William (Bill) Kelleher, known to his children as “Wild Willie.” Bill told me he met his wife Judy when a friend had arranged a blind date for him. On the way to pick her up he had auto accident and ended up in the hospital. His blind date came to the hospital to introduce herself.

Bill and Judy have been married 56 years. Bill and Judy have four daughters, 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Bill married Judy and went to school and became a mortician, and then went to work for his wife’s father, who owned a funeral home. After

a few years one of his daughters had a breathing problem, made worse in the wet weather of Illinois. So, they packed up and moved to Phoenix.

I first met bill when he gave me 13 very expensive portraits of U.S. presidents to hang on the wall of my courtroom. I asked Bill, “Do you have a motto or something that encourages you to do so many good things?” Bill said, “I was raised a Catholic. My parents were always engaged in doing good things.

Every morning I pray the prayer of St. Frances and I try every day to live that prayer, ‘Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.’”

Several years ago I was proud of the fact I had given 100 pints of blood. I told Bill and he said he had given 130 pints. It is always like that. You cannot

out give Bill. Bill told me about meeting past President Jimmy Carter. He had traveled to Georgia to help build a house for Habitat for Humanity. He told me about how difficult it was for him and a coworker to lift the heavy 4-by-8 sheets of drywall and place them in the ceiling. They noticed a very large man lifting the sheets of drywall by himself with ease. At noon he was introduced to this very large person. His name was Joe Green, the same “Mean Joe Green” of the NFL’s Pittsburg Steelers.

Bill is a past president of the Glendale Rotary, a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow and a regular member of the team that builds two houses in Mexico every year. He has been a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus, holding many local and statewide positions. In 1991 Bill was president of the chamber of commerce in Glendale. He and his wife were heavily involved in starting a free lunch program. He has traveled to the Amazon on trips to improve

health care, been to Guatemala many times to fit glasses and been on the advisory board for the Salvation Army for 20 years. Maj. Leslie said Bill was the driving force that made the new $500,000 building remodel possible.

Six weeks prior to Christmas Bill and his family checked out a red kittle from the Salvation Army, and every Saturday you will find the Kelleher’s ringing the bell in front of Fry’s.

When I asked why he does all these things, Bill answered, “On a trip to Guatemala I was fitting an old lady with glasses and she started to cry and said, ‘Now I can see and now I can sew.’”

Lesson: He ain’t heavy. He is my brother.

Cobras fall short in controversial softball championship game

The scoreboard showed Salpointe Catholic softball’s 6-5 extra-innings win in the 2019 AIA Softball 4A State Championship game. The Lancers celebrated Hillenbrand Stadium at The University of Arizona and hoisted the trophy for the second time in as many years. But, their opponent, Cactus High, felt the game should not have ended.

With multiple runners on base in a 5-5 tie at the bottom of the eighth inning with one out, the Lancers hit a sacrifice fly. A throw home from right field was late, and the Cobras walked off the field disappointed in the loss.

“All of a sudden, we look up into the stands and we see all the parents pointing toward first base and yelling to grab the ball,” junior Cassandra Elliott said.

She took the ball and stood on first base. In the midst of the celebration, the Cobras said Salpointe’s runner on first base never tagged up after the catch. Though they had thrown the ball home initially, Cactus argued it was still a live ball, and that the late throw to first would have constituted the third out.

Because the appeal happened minutes after the final run, the crew of three umpires walked out of the stadium through left field. They could not hear the plethora of fans, players and coaches screaming at them to turn around.

est part when we were calling them,” Elliott said.

Cactus coach Bartt Underwood ran out to lobby his case to the officials.

After several minutes of deliberation, the call stood and the game was over.

A tournament director who appeared to see the play clearly declined comment, as well.

Though disappointed, Underwood said the eighth-inning play was not the sole reason for the loss. The Cobras had other chances to close out the championship.

“It’s never one thing. We can say that play lost the game, but what about those two errors we had?” Underwood

said about a sixth inning that Cactus blew a 5-4 lead. “We had that lead, and if we hold them there, we’re going into the seventh with a lead instead of a tie.”

Though it delayed the celebration a bit, while both teams anxiously waited for the umpires’ final decision, the Lancers were still incredibly proud to repeat as state champions.

“We worked hard since the weight room in the fall. All the young ladies on our team have figured out their role and how to contribute, and no matter what this moment is so special and will be remembered in our hearts,” Salpointe Catholic coach Amy Baray-Rocha said.

But several of the players were visibly upset and a bit dumbfounded by the result.

Elliott said she was proud of the way the team bonded all season. Underwood agreed, and said he appreciates the way the girls worked all year.

“In my book you are champions, and we know there was a call here that didn’t go our way,” Underwood said.

“So what? Do you have to have a ring on your finger to know you’re a champion?”

Cactus finished the year with a 32-4 record.

Cactus High football held its spring practices in May, and the Cobra players and coaches were excited to finally take the field again in hopes of a successful summer and regular season in the fall.

With a full season under coach Jo-

seph Ortiz’s belt, having gone 8-4 in 2018, the team seems to have fully taken on his identity as their leader.

“There’s no more transition state anymore,” he said.

The Cobras are expecting solid production from both the offensive and defensive lines this season. Ortiz said around 20 linemen have attended spring practices, far more than the Co-

bras have boasted in years past.

Barring injury, three of the five starting offensive linemen from last season’s team should return to the lineup in the 2019 season. So, rising senior Travis Combs said the run game could be among the best in the state.

He was one of the linemen who made the switch to the position late into last offseason. There was a learning period,

but now with the returning starters and several other big bodies to fill the open spots, the goal is perfection rather than learning the basics.

“We kind of know exactly what we need to do. It’s not that same learning process of trying to figure out everything. Now it’s just trying to get better SEE FOOTBALL PAGE 21

One of these is not like the others — but it certainly belongs Many of you grew up listening to “Sesame Street.” One of their regular features was a brilliant learning tool helping children understand the concepts of similar and contrast. Three different things that don’t quite fit would be put together. The contrasting object wasn’t bad or negative; it just didn’t fit in the context presented. For example, there would be a hammer, a nail and a puppet. The puppet was the thing that didn’t fit into this particular context.

Here we go. I’m presenting you with three church stories. Two will fit together; one won’t. However, one certainly belongs. Look for it. It’s great advice for everyone. These may seem a bit random, but people in church do these all the time.

Here’s the first story. A man was depressed and opened the Bible

randomly to a page to see what God would say to him. He came across the verse, “And Judas hung himself…”

Horrified, he opened the Bible again at random and saw yet another phrase: “Go and do likewise.” Dejected, he opened the Bible again one final time and came to the verse, “What you must do, do quickly”. Hint: Please don’t take the Bible out of context. Text, out of text, is pretext.

Here’s the second story. Ten years out of high school, Tom ran into his old classmate Fred, once informally voted

“least likely to succeed.” But Fred was driving a $70,000 car and sporting an imported suit. “Fred!” Tom said.

“You’re sure looking prosperous. How did you do it?”

“It’s the easiest thing, Tom. My grandmother left me a little inheritance and the Lord guided me to turn it into a lot of money,” Fred responded. “I just took a Bible, flipped it open at random and put my finger down on the page. It landed on the word ‘oil,’ so I invested in an oil well and money started rolling in. Then I went back to the Bible, flipped it open again, and this time my finger came down on the word ‘gold,’ so I bought a bunch of gold coins. I doubled my money in a year. It’s really been amazing!”

Tom congratulated him and hurried home to pick up his Bible. “If it works for dumb old Fred, it has to work for

me,” he thought. He flipped open his Bible, plopped his finger down on the page, and looked down to read it. It read, “Chapter 11.” Hint: Don’t do it.

Sounds like the last story.

Here’s the third story. A member of a certain church, who previously had been attending services regularly, stopped going. After a few weeks, the preacher decided to visit him. It was a chilly evening. The pastor found the man at home alone, sitting before a blazing fire. Guessing the reason for his preacher’s visit, the man welcomed him, led him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace and waited.

The preacher made himself at home but said nothing. In the grave silence, he contemplated the dance of the flames around the burning logs. After some SEE BIBLE PAGE 28

minutes, the preacher took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it on one side of the hearth all alone. Then he sat back in his chair, still silent.

The host watched all of this in quiet contemplation. As the one lone ember’s flame flickered and diminished, there was a momentary glow and then its fire was no more. Soon it was cold and dead. Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting.

The preacher glanced at his watch and realized it was time to leave. He slowly stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately it began to glow once more with the light and warmth of the burning coals around it.

As the preacher reached the door to leave, his host with a tear running down his cheek said, “Thank you so much for your visit and especially for the fiery sermon. I will be back in church next Sunday.”

Be part of the fire. The message here is sometimes the best message is an unspoken message. No one is too bad to come into church and no one too good to stay out of a church. This story is the one that doesn’t belong with the others but certainly belongs in all our hearts, especially if you’re like the host.

Peoria libraries’ literacy program returns

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF Mayor Cathy Carlat has announced the return of the annual summer literacy program for Peoria residents: “Peoria Reads: Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader.”

The free program was created to encourage Peoria’s future workforce to read 20 minutes a day over the summer.

Peoria residents can sign up for the fourth year at Peoria Main Library, 8463 W. Monroe Street, or Sunrise Mountain Library, 21109 N. 98th Avenue, to receive a bookmark to track their reading. The bookmark can be turned in at the end of summer for a chance to win numerous prizes, including Barnes and Noble gift cards, digital reading tablets and one of three complete book sets.

“Helping our children acquire a love of reading is a gift that lasts a lifetime and I’m excited to kick off the summer with this valuable reading program,” Carlat said.

“With amazing events and opportunities to win great prizes over the next couple months, I hope families join us on this reading adventure.”

To encourage participation along the way, Carlat is inviting Peoria readers

to fun events throughout the summer. Attendance is tracked on the participant’s bookmark and can be counted as additional entries for prizes. Children who complete their reading and attend all five free events will earn six entries to be submitted for the final program drawing.

The summer events begin with “Dive into Reading” from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 25, at the Sunrise pool, 21321 N 86th Drive. Admission is free and popsicles will be provided.

The event will include water safety fun.

From 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday, June 13, at Sunrise Mountain Library, “Reading is Hot” will allow

youngsters to be a junior firefighter and spray a real fire hose.

Then, from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday, June 27, “You Have the Right to Read” at Peoria Main Library. Check out the SWAT Mobile Command Unit and learn about police equipment.

From 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 11, “Reach for Reading” at Rio Vista Recreation Center, 8866 W. Thunderbird Avenue. Kids climb the rock wall for free, and if they reach the book they can win a prize.

Finally, from 10 to 11 a.m.

Liberty student is first winner of new ACT scholarship

Peoria student Ethan Tanner was initially in disbelief when he learned he was the first recipient of the ACT Scholarship Giveaway.

Out of more than 132,000 possible applicants nationwide for the new scholarship, the junior at Liberty High School was awarded $5,000. On May 14, Liberty High School and ACT organized a celebration to congratulate Tanner on his scholarship.

“My mom forwarded me an email saying that I was chosen as the ACT Scholarship (recipient),” Tanner said.

“My first thought was thinking that it was kind of like a joke, but then after a little bit (of time), I was really excited.”

The ACT Scholarship Giveaway is given to four students in a lottery format.

Three of those students receive $5,000, and the other receives a grand prize award of $40,000.

Each ACT Scholarship Giveaway winner also takes home an additional $5,000 technology package containing an Apple Macbook Air, 27-inch monitor, iPad Pro, accessories, Beats by Dre

ACT is a nonprofit, mission-driven organization that is dedicated to helping students achieve education and workplace success. Natalie Ivory, the senior project manager for ACT, explained the motivation for creating this new scholarship.

Legoland accepting ‘Creative Crew’ applications

Most high school students and their families are aware of the finances that go into college, and Tanner was no exception.

“The scholarship has given me an opportunity to have money for tuition,” Tanner said.

So, Tanner has already begun to think about how the scholarship will play into his future plans. He sees himself staying true to his childhood dream.

“From a very early age, I have been trying to get into (Brigham Young University), so I will probably try to get in that school,” Tanner said.

“I want to be a mechanical engineer because I like building things and discovering how things work.”

While he is appreciative of the recognition, it is not something for which Tanner looks, however.

“I mean, I’m not one for recognition, like I would be fine not being recognized,” Tanner admitted. “I still think it’s really exciting to be the first (winner) — it’s a big accomplishment.”

In Guyana Burke will study traditional ecological knowledge of the Makushi and the potential of local wisdom to guide conservation initiatives.

Pita Jungle coming to Park West complex

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF Popular locally owned and operated Greek, Mediterranean, Lebanese, Middle Eastern, vegetarian and vegan restaurant Pita Jungle has announced its newest location at Peoria’s highly anticipated Park West.

The 4,400-square-foot West Valley location will open this summer, though a more formal date has yet to be set.

“We are thrilled about our newest restaurant at Park West, soon to be

the premium destination in the West Valley,” said Bassel Osmani, cofounder of Pita Jungle. “Opening our 22nd location and introducing the Peoria neighborhood to ‘The Art of Eating Healthy’ is the perfect way to celebrate our 25th anniversary this year.”

The new restaurant will feature a large main dining area and outdoor patio that flows into the interior through wide openings and an inviting full bar.

It will be the first location to bake its

own flatbreads in a very visual fashion right in the middle of the dining room.

The restaurant will be open for lunch, happy hour and dinner seven days a week, serving the same Mediterranean dishes that have built its reputation over the past 25 years.

According to Osmani, the Park West Pita Jungle will “project an avantgarde perspective upon what the new roaring ’20s will bring, highlighted by the surrounding geography and the promise of desert urbanism the city of

Peoria has been beautifully delivering.”

Between now and the opening, Pita Jungle will hire approximately 70 parttime and full-time employees, from chefs to servers and everything in between, for the new Peoria restaurant.

With this addition, there will be 19 Pita Jungle’s in the Phoenix Metro area, two in Tucson and one in Flagstaff.

Peoria Harley-Davidson team expanding to Goodyear

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF The team behind Arrowhead HarleyDavidson is looking to grow its West Valley footprint, as construction is now underway on a new, 20,000-squarefoot location in Goodyear.

The new store, Roadrunner HarleyDavidson, will be at 159th Avenue and McDowell Road, and feature the Harley-Davidson Riding Academy Range with expert riding coaches to help create safer riders.

A project of Agate Construction, the new facility is scheduled for completion this fall.

“We’re excited to open our Southwest Valley home to the local riders. We’re even more excited to grow with the city of Goodyear, as we have watched it grow from afar. Our plan is to deliver the same award-winning level of customer service as we do at our Peoria location,” shared Eric Bushamie, general manager and managing partner of these two locations.
