Memorial goes beyond Veterans Day

But when the Peoria Veterans Memorial Board collected letters from children ages 8 to 10 and distributed them among patients and visitors to the VA Hospital in Phoenix, the tide turned.

Walgreens and its primary care partner Village Medical recently opened three Village Medical at Walgreens practices in the area, with plans to open 12 by summer 2021.

Village Medical at Walgreens, which includes a location at 20266 N. Lake Pleasant Road, is a full-service primary care practice. Six in 10 Americans live with at least one chronic condition, requiring multiple daily medications. In Arizona, chronic diseases are the most common, costly

The city of Peoria is partnering with A New Leaf West Valley VITA Program to provide tax services to Peoria residents.

Residents can drop off their tax information with a VITA volunteer. Tax preparation services will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis by IRS-certified volunteers. These services will be available on Saturdays April 24, May 1 and May 8 at the Peoria Community Center, 8335 W. Jefferson Street.

board’s chairman. “We took the letters to the VA hospital, and it was amazing.

“It brought them to tears. It gave them hop. Not only did I get those to veterans in Phoenix but to the VA in New Mexico and Texas, too.”

The board, which meets regularly, is responsible for the Veterans Memorial at Rio Vista Community Park, 8866 W. Thunderbird Road. John Sefton, Peoria’s director of parks, recreation and community facilities, said the board is appointed by the mayor and council. It was established with the creation of the Rio Vista Recreation Center and the first phase of the memorial.

In 2016, the first phase was created

with the veterans in mind. There is shade for respite and a seating area.

“The honor wall is for families and loved ones to recognize their person who has served the community,” Sefton said. “This coming November will be our fifth year of installing names on the honor wall. We now have over 280 names on the wall.”

Snedicor said the memorial is not only great for families but the veterans as well.

“They don’t have to have died in battle,” he said. “They could be active duty, reserves — just as long as they served in any form or fashion. They all put themselves at risk. It has the same requirements as the National Cemetery, and they don’t have to have lived in Peoria.

“On the other side of the granite wall is a list of every major battle with a little paragraph about each. Kids can

learn what we have done as a military to protect the freedoms that we have today. They can reflect there and think about the battles and what has taken place. We have a Huey there named after John McCain.”

When The Moving Wall, a half-sized replica of the Vietnam Wall, came to town, the board was asked to recruit volunteers to help assemble it.

“About 200 volunteers came,” Snedicor said. “We worked with veterans to assemble it. The school district had buses come out. Kids spoke about the Vietnam War. It was great.

“The city was awesome in providing food, water and all the resources we needed during the event. The city and the district had outside resources get together and make it impactful to all.”

Land developers give back to Glendale

Glendale-based The Mangat Group has invested nearly $35 million in land purchases in the last six months and owns roughly 1,000 acres throughout the Phoenix metro area.

It most recently purchased a parcel of land in Buckeye valued at $2.5 million at the beginning of March, and by the end of the month, that same piece of land was in escrow for $5.6 million.

“Land value in Arizona is increasing exponentially,” said Tony Mangat, founder of The Mangat Group. “We purchased a plot of land in Peoria for $180,000 a few years ago, which is now valued at $4 million.”

Mangat founded The Mangat Group after immigrating to the United States from Punjab, India, and his company purchases and develops property primarily in the West Valley.

Mangat’s first project consists of a 36-acre plot of land in Glendale off Northern Avenue and the Loop 101, which he is turning into the state’s first field hockey stadium.

He plans soccer and field tennis, as well as restaurants, hotels and a fully operational media center. The $50 million sports complex will hold between 700 to 900 fans.

“This is a passion project inspired

by Indian religious leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale,” Mangat said.

“I wanted to leave a legacy for him, all while providing an area for children to develop and learn good values so they don’t go down the wrong path. I have hopes this will inspire kids to play more sports so they stay off drugs and live a healthier lifestyle.

I wanted to improve the community by providing those opportunities.”

Mangat was also motivated to build the stadium for his son’s teammates.

“My son plays for the U.S. junior field hockey team, and I wanted to provide a practice field for him and his teammates, especially with the Olympics coming to Los Angeles in 2028.”

In addition to the Glendale property, Mangat owns residential property

in Buckeye that’s 315 acres. He plans to partner with housing developers to construct a community near the downtown area off Highway 11 and is looking for additional land purchases in the area.

Mangat is developing a large truck stop on 16 acres in Black Canyon City and has plans for a gas station and fast-food restaurants on 80 acres in Tonopah. They will be breaking ground in the next 60 days on three self-storage facilities in Peoria, Glendale and Goodyear and will begin construction on two RV storage facilities — off Jomax and the 101, and Baseline and the 202 — in the next four months.

Expansion plans were driven by the success of the first five practices in Houston, indicated by high satisfaction from patients and physicians and better health outcomes. With many locations in medically underserved areas, Village Medical at Walgreens will help meet the needs of patients, including those who may not have access to health care and are at greater risk of health disparities.

“I feel like this is what they talked about in school — the triad relationship between provider, pharmacist and patient,” Burgess said. “We hear about this pharmacy utopia, if you will. Then, you get out and practice and it’s not there. There’s this health care disconnect. A lot of my colleagues are very jealous that they don’t have this.”

Arizona’s distracted driving/ riding event planned

Peoria-based Arizona Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Foundation will host “Share the Road & Riding for the Long Haul” from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Saturday, May 1, at Phoenix Shrine Auditorium & Event Center, 552 N. 40th Street in Phoenix.

AMSAF and Dignity Health (Chandler Regional Medical Center), Law Tigers, RideNow and Rosenbluth Family Charitable Foundation will host a dinner adventure and fundraiser featuring Western characters, guest speakers, live and silent auctions, and music — to focus the public on the critical need to reduce distracted driving and help eliminate crashes and fatalities.

Dr. Joseph Sucher, director of trauma services at HonorHealth Deer Valley Hospital, will serve as one of the

served 20 years in the U.S. Marines, including combat time in Iraq.

“I was primarily stationed overseas,” he said. “I was in Okinawa and on the West Coast. I was in Barstow, California and Guam as well. In 20 years, you get to places.”

The board is also working on a Veterans Trail with the parks and recreation board. It collaborates with the community resource center in Peoria and law enforcement to help homeless veterans.

“We help them with housing,” Snedicor said. “We work with the VA to get resources to help homeless veterans get out of homelessness. The board is there to facilitate projects or things that need to be done.”

Snedicor said Sefton is a great asset to the board.

“John is the guy I talk to, and he gets the things I need to accomplish our tasks,” he said. “We have a very

supportive mayor and council, too.

They’re very pro-veteran. It’s the partnership we have between the city, the city offices, the director of parks and recreation, and obviously the connections we have with other cities and with our senators and congresspeople who help.”

At its 94th annual Water Conference and Exhibition in Phoenix, the AZ Water Association recognized EPCOR USA with 41 safety and operational excellence awards for water and wastewater facilities across the company’s Arizona territories.

The AZ Water Association presents water awards of honor every year in the categories of water distribution

National pastime baseball now a time past?

Little more than a month after he called Dec. 7, 1941, a “Day of Infamy” and led America into World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt paused from his duties as commander-in-chief to assume the mantle of “First Fan.” In a letter to Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis dated Jan. 15, 1942, FDR requested that “baseball keep going.” President Roosevelt believed it was important to stateside morale that our nation find respite from the rigors of wartime and that our “national pastime” could provide it.

Had a “woke” culture (as opposed to an awakened populace) existed in the early 1940s, there would have been plenty of complaints. Major League Baseball was a segregated sport (it would not integrate until after the war); there were no “workers’ rights” for players, because teams “owned”

them contractually; and the quality of competition suffered as the game’s young players volunteered for military service.

Despite rosters filled with older, younger and medically discharged players, baseball continued during the war years and cemented its spot in the annals of Americana alongside hot dogs and apple pie — or so it seemed.

Now, almost 80 years after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, a different president has called on Major League Baseball in a very different way, and MLB has answered the call by joining in a political attack on the state of Georgia, as well as an economic assault on the “majority minority” city of Atlanta.

History may record Joe Biden as the 46th president of the United States, but he was batting leadoff when it came to bashing Georgia. Appearing on ESPN’s coverage of opening day, President Biden turned Major League Baseball into a “political football,” calling on MLB to move the All-Star Game

out of the Peach State.

Hyperbole is an omnipresent reality in American political speech, but Mr. Biden’s false charges plumbed new depths. He described the new Georgia Election Reform Law as an “atrocity,” added that it was “Jim Crow on steroids,” and mistakenly claimed time and again that Georgia was closing the polls at 5 p.m. on Election Day. It was that final falsehood that drew the ire of no less a progressive publication than The Washington Post.

On March 30, the Post turned “fact checker” on the chief executive’s repetition of the falsehood. The newspaper correctly pointed out that polls in Georgia remain open until 7 p.m. on Election Day, and gave the president four “Pinocchios” for his deliberate use of disinformation. Yet “Geppetto” Biden continues to pull strings (or more accurately, yank chains) by continuing to make that false claim.

Unfortunately, other publications lend credence to the incredible. Be-

cause the new Georgia Law requires voter ID, Politico frets that it “could potentially restrict voting access.” But shouldn’t voting access be limited to legal, registered voters who can confirm their identity?

With the White House using the “bully pulpit” to bully others, a compliant target was found in MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. No “Mighty Manfred” by any stretch of the imagination, the commissioner collapsed in the wake of the woke onslaught.

In his official statement of April 2, Commissioner Manfred fashioned a rhetorical spitball: “I have decided that the best way to demonstrate our values as a sport is by relocating this year’s All-Star Game…”

While Rob Manfred got rolled, the Rockies were rewarded in the rush to relocate.

My faith and hopes are restored by Suns

Quick to hold a grudge yet molasses slow to forgive an enemy. That will be my epitaph. It also explains why I’m having a difficult time with the Phoenix Suns these days.

The Suns were a big reason I moved west in 1995. They had Charles Barkley, upon whom I had spent much of my grad school stipend buying cheap seats in Philly’s old Spectrum arena. If Phoenix was good enough for Chuck, hey, who was I to argue?

Two years after Suns fans had their hearts broken in the 1993 NBA Finals

by Michael Jordan’s Bulls, I moved to Phoenix armed with all manner of purple hats and regalia. Over the next 15 years, I watched, listened or attended the next thousand Suns games in a row.

True story: I so loved the 2007 Steve Nash-led Suns, I traveled to San Antonio for games three and four of that franchise-changing playoff series

against the loathsome Spurs. I was in the stands when Robert Horry hipchecked Nash into the scorer’s table.

The ensuing mayhem caused Amar’e Stoudemire and Boris Diaw to leave the bench — earning each a one-game suspension — and required me to be physically restrained from punching a Spurs fan in the postgame taxi line.

Not my finest moment as a human.

And the Suns losing to the Spurs remains my biggest heartbreak as a sports fanatic.

The Purple Gang never really recovered from that debacle. They won 55 games the next season but again lost to the Spurs in the playoffs. Coach Mike D’Antoni left; front-office bumbling began.

By 2010, owner Robert Sarver had parlayed the mythic “Seven Seconds or Less” squad into a sub-.500 bunch that wasted Nash’s prime. I shared season tickets with a buddy that year and seeing Sarver strut about so annoyed me.

I began to give my seats away — and skip watching games.

By 2012, I couldn’t have picked most Suns players out of a police lineup, a useful attribute when the team’s roster featured Marcus and Markieff Morris.

Then, a couple years ago, a strange thing happened: This franchise somehow found its way. Sarver slipped into the background, perhaps having realized that being a quiet disliked rich guy who owns a winning team is more profitable than being a loud disliked rich guy who owns a loser.

They drafted Devin Booker, who scores at will; inked world-class human Monty Williams as coach; and landed Deandre Ayton, a 6-foot-11 mountain with Shaq-esque potential.

This iteration of the Suns grabbed the NBA’s attention by going 8-0 in last year’s COVID-19 “bubble,” then traded for point guard Chris Paul, a sure Hall of Famer.

With the playoffs looming, Phoenix has the league’s second-best record.

Few pundits are shouting “title contender,” but with LeBron James gimpy, anything is possible in this odd, pan-

demic-mired season. I find myself wanting to care about the Suns again but wary, on guard, over-cautious.

Will Sarver bust out his old foam finger? Will Manu Ginobili, age 133 and fully bald, come out of retirement to join the Lakers, then flop the entire Suns team into foul trouble at a critical moment?

Or will the Suns end up in the finals against the Brooklyn Nets, who appear to have signed every All-Star in NBA history and are coached by — wait for it — Steve Nash?

Imagine that storyline: The prodigal son returns, accompanied by his assistant coach — wait for it again — Mike D’Antoni. Will they get their revenge on Sarver? Or will the unthinkable happen: Will the Phoenix Suns finally win an NBA title after zero championships in 53 seasons?

Finally, another Suns series I wouldn’t miss for the world.

Conversely, Colorado, a state with what NBC News describes as “expansive voting laws” but more accurately identified as “ballot fraud friendly,” given its policy priorities of same-day voter registration and elections conducted primarily by mail, will prosper — at least in the short term.

The implications are clear. MLB has chosen to “play ball” with Biden, and

in so doing, has chosen sides politically. It is an error of major league proportions.

Don’t discount the effect of music on you

usic. It is a huge part of our lives. Every day we listen to something. Our life is often enhanced by the music we listen to, the melodies we love and the symphonies we cherish. And once again, we can go to concerts!

Did you know students who take music classes also excel at math, science and English? There is a verified (scientific) connection between people who succeed in science and music. If one studies the music of Bach and Beethoven, the mathematical and symmetrical nature of music is evident. For young people, the correlation between music

and success is undeniable. A recently published research article in the Journal of Psychology found that students who studied music, played instruments and engaged in music programs at school did better in math and science exams.

Take heart, parents, your kids might not listen to the music you like, but music is an essential ingredient in growth and development. Maybe the kids today do not appreciate Beethoven, but let’s not diminish the impact of Billie Eilish, who at age 18 wrote music in her home with her brother for many years and is now a major pop star. Her devotion to singing and writing is epic. And it inspires many people of all ages.

The positive intellectual effects of studying music seem to be centered around the enhancement of broad competencies, such as memory, time commitment and self-regulation, which are

similar skills required to conquer math problems. Learning to play an instrument is not a quick process.

It takes time, practice and devotion.

The very qualities we need to succeed in life! To make kids “smarter,” maybe music is the way to go. Sitting at a piano, learning to read music, blowing a horn, singing a song — these are things that create the backbone of mastery.

I recall, as a child, a new piano (our first) being delivered to our home in Ohio. You would have thought Sputnik landed in our living room. It was one of the most joyful family events that I can remember, and my grandmother Helga, an accomplished pianist, was there at the “unveiling.” She was the first to “touch the keys from God” and make music, followed by my father, who was also a superb player. We were very middle class but felt “rich” that day to have

acquired something so amazing.

No matter what life holds, we are thrilled, comforted, inspired and transformed by music. Like anything special, we want to share our music with others.

We want to experience a concert with someone we love! And now we can. The beat goes on, and the music is playing.

Anthem is holding Music in May every Friday evening at the Anthem Community Park. From 7 to 9 p.m., this is a family-friendly event series, so bring a blanket, picnic dinner and enjoy diverse sounds underneath the Anthem sky. It’s open to the public, with free admission and parking. Kids dance, neighbors meet and the park rocks!

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Angry with Leibowitz Editor: Rarely do I respond to news reports, but I found Mr. Leibowitz’s article was particularly offensive.

The headline “Anti-vaxxers long on myths short on logic” started my morning off on the wrong foot. I am so tired of one-sided journalism and was surprised that your paper carried this.

I have enjoyed the local news in your paper, but reading this article was just disappointing. Did Mr. Leibowitz research the other side of this issue? Interview anyone from the other side of this issue?

I am not an anti-vaxxer. I receive my FDA-approved flu shots annually. I take any approved vaccination recommended by my physician. I am not long on myths. I am an educated person and make my own informed decisions

based on all information available.

I certainly am not short on logic. I am an educated, professional woman with a resume of accomplishments that will stand up to anything that Mr. Leibowitz wants to use for comparison.

Finally, his last sentence, implying people with a different opinion from his own may have wisdom but are tainted with idiocy deserves only my scorn.

Scare tactics such as “creating an issue for our state” and requiring “75% to 80%-plus of the state to be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity” push me even further away from even considering putting this drug into my body.

I have many reasons, medical and personal, for making this choice. I should not be made a target of ridicule because of my beliefs.

Glendale’s Glencroft Center for Modern Aging, the largest senior living campus in Arizona, is looking to immediately fill positions at an on-site job fair Thursday, April 22.

Glencroft is adding nearly 50 fulltime positions ranging from caregivers, nurses and administrative employees to security officers, maintenance/landscaping and dining services workers for its operations. With nearly 900 residents and 500 staff, Glencroft is emerging from the pandemic with growth and a healthy outlook for 2021.

Home searches crowded despite rising costs

If you’re searching for a home and it seems a little crowded out there, there’s a reason.

According to ShowingTime, the platform Realtors use to schedule most of the MLS showings, showings of Peoria listings in the $300,000 to $399,999 range averaged 23.3 showings per listing, and Peoria traffic in the $200,000 to $299,999 range averaged 25.1 showings per listing.

In Glendale, homes in the $300,000 to $399,999 range averaged 20.7 showings per listings, and in the $200,000 to $299,999, the average was 24.2 showings per listing.

These numbers are double and triple the numbers of showings per listing

from just one year ago. Considering a closing typically takes 30 days, and the average days on the market is down to 34 days, nearly all of these showings are taking place in the first couple of days a listing is active.

Very crowded indeed. And not all showings are scheduled through ShowingTime, so actual numbers are typically higher.

And prices continue to climb. According to The Cromford Report, 50% of sales closed in Maricopa County in March sold for an amount over the listing price. That’s not only up from 41% of February sales but a sharp increase from the 33% average we’d been seeing consistently since August 2020.

March 2021 saw 450 MLS listing sales closed in Glendale and 408 in Peoria. Today there are 106 active and available listings (not counting properties already under contract or pending close of escrow) in MLS in Glendale and 110 active listings in Peoria.

That’s 23.5% of one month’s inventory in Glendale, down from 37.8% in March, and 27% of one month’s inventory in Peoria, down from 38.6%.

Today’s Maricopa County inventory is 39.9% of March’s closed sales, down from 50.3% in February.

According to Freddie Mac, mortgage rates are holding steady. As of April 15, National Mortgage Rates reported U.S. weekly averages of 3.04% for a 30-year fixed rate, 2.35% for a 15-year fixed rate and 2.8% for a fiveyear ARM. March entry-level prices for a detached home with three bedrooms and two baths in the West Valley for buyers using FHA financing saw minimums of $190,000 in Maricopa County, $250,000 in Glendale, and $240,000 in Peoria.

Conventional financing buyers saw minimums of $177,000 in Maricopa County, $257,400 in Peoria, and $253,000 in Glendale. Maricopa

County VA buyers paid a minimum of $220,000, Peoria VA buyers paid $308,000, and Glendale VA buyers paid a minimum of $287,000.

According to MLS statistics, the number of Maricopa County buyers who financed their purchases in March held steady at 78%. Conventional financing made up 73.6% of those sales, FHA financing 10.1%, VA financing 5.7%, and the remaining sales used other financing methods. For the week ending March 28, only 4% of Maricopa County sellers contributed to buyers’ closing costs.

Friendly Pines to celebrate with camping kids

In just a few short months, children will hopefully get to do what they were not able to do last summer because of COVID-19.

They will pack up sleeping bags, pillows, flashlights, and duffel bags filled, with their names labeled on everything; give mom and dad a hug goodbye; and then board a bus that will take them up to Friendly Pines Camp in Prescott.

Located in the cool pines of the beautiful Bradshaw Mountains, Friendly Pines Camp has become a favorite sleepaway camp tradition for thousands of families.

“We’re now seeing a fourth generation of campers,” said Kevin Nissen, the long-time co-director who has worked full time with the camp for 30 years.

“Many of our former campers, who are now the parents and even grandparents of current campers, tell us that they love that we’re still teaching the same, classic camp songs and square dances; still cooking Dutch oven biscuits over a campfire; and offering many of the same outdoor sports, activities and camp traditions that they remember doing.”

Founded in 1941 by Bud and Isabelle Brown and accredited through the American Camp Association, Friendly Pines Camp is Arizona’s longest-running family-owned summer camp. The founders’ great-granddaughter, Megan May, is the camp’s other co-director.

Designed for ages 6 to 14, this coed sleepaway camp offers more than 30 traditional camp activities, including

horseback riding, swimming, waterskiing, ball sports, rock climbing, performing arts, fine arts, pet care, fencing, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, dancing and sewing.

According to Nissen, “Sleepaway camp is the ideal training ground for developing resilience or grit. At sleepaway camp, boys and girls are encouraged to try new things like riding a horse, waterskiing, or scaling the climbing wall.

“Camp is also a place where children can discover their inner strength.

They learn that maybe — for the first time — they can make their own way in the world. And isn’t that what we really want our kids to know?”

Being “unplugged” and away from so much screen time is another big reason why parents choose to send their children to Friendly Pines for a couple of weeks every summer.

Nissen said he hears from more parents every year that they simply want their children to enjoy socializing and playing with other kids face to face, not on social media, and they want their kids to enjoy being outside in nature. Every afternoon during “siesta,” kids can be found reading and relaxing in the hammocks that swing between the trees.

This summer, Friendly Pines is scheduled to operate from May 29 to July 31. There are one-, two-, fourand six-week sessions available. The camp’s COVID-19 safety protocols are on the camp’s website.

“We will continue to communicate with the state and county health departments and maintain our high level of communication with our camp families regarding changes in status for summer 2021,” Nissen said.

“We are currently enrolling for this summer and all families, have until May 1 to cancel without any penalty, less a $100 administration fee.”

Parents should also know that while many of the camp’s activities and traditions have remained the same over 80 years, all the main buildings and cabins have been remodeled and upgraded.

Central’s Kaleb Parham takes after his father

Kaleb Parham has a love for the game of football that can be attributed to many things.

The Peoria native is a freshman at Central College in Pella, Iowa, playing nose guard for a program that is the fourth-winningest NCAA college football team since 1975.

At 6-foot-3, 290 pounds, Parham’s size alone may lead one to believe he was destined to do battle on the gridiron.

But his size is not his best feature as a football player — or a person. Many around Parham believe he is an exceptional individual with a heart of gold.

Central’s head football coach, Jeff McMartin, said he believes Parham exemplifies the kind of person he wants playing for his program.

“For a guy his size, he moves really well,” McMartin said. “He’s got good feet; he’s athletic. He’s somebody who just has the right demeanor. He loves the game of football and loves to compete. He’s willing to play hard and give you everything he has.

“Kaleb is an expressive young man.

He’s easy to get to know and great to talk to. He’s a great guy.”

Parham loved Central the second he visited the school. As a person who values family very highly, he knew Central would be a good fit.

“The whole campus had a real family vibe to it, and the coaches extended that even more,” Parham said. “They really made me feel like I was going to be part of a real family and not just a football team.”

Central’s success as a football program was no secret to Parham, but not only did he not shy away from it, he welcomed it. He was looking forward to the challenge of playing on a consis-

tently successful program.

“It brings me a little more confidence,” he said. “I know I’m going into somewhere that knows how to win and how to succeed. I know they’ll prepare me to do just that.”

McMartin acknowledged Parham as an important part of its defense, and as a freshman, he is featured in the team’s “Two Deep” system. Central utilizes two players at each position defensively and subs them in and out to keep players fresh during a football game’s grueling events.

He sees Parham as a possible piece to the program’s future on the defensive line.

None of this early success or praise comes as a surprise to Kory Parham, Kaleb’s father.

“I think Kaleb understands that there is no moment that is bigger than him,” he said. “He has this saying: ‘Onto the next.’ For him that’s just whatever the situation is; he’s not going to dwell on the bad or negative side of it. He’s always going to stay positive or optimistic. In doing so, he’s going to carry that into his walk of life.”

Kory Parham played football for 23 years, including 15 professional years in minor league football. He also worked for the Arizona Cardinals for nine seasons in public relations.

Parham has been around football his whole life, and in following his father’s footsteps, he fell in love with the game at a young age. He started playing when he was 5 years old and said his father has been a huge part of his football career.

“When I started to really enjoy (playing football), I think he started to really enjoy that I liked it,” Parham said.

“He really was my cheerleader.”

The family aspect of the game looms largely in Parham’s head. Growing up in a family-oriented household and watching his father play for so many years drew him even closer to the game.

“Having a team and building relationships with people is probably my No. 1 thing in life,” Parham said. “So, being a part a big group of guys that pretty much everyday bond together and are really truly a family is what makes me enjoy and love football.”

Parham was not always the outspoken person that his head coach and teammates are now used to. Only through his development as a young man has his personality become more extraverted.

“When Kaleb was younger, he was just sort of a quiet kid,” Kory Parham said. “He would just kind of sit in the corner. As he started to develop his personality, he became more of a quiet leader. He would be vocal at the time that he felt he needed to be, and along with that he knew he needed to be a leader. As a leader, you have to show examples, and he would do just that.”

The transition from high school athletics to college sports is a tough transition for many, and for Parham, it was

even more difficult. His freshman season at Central was canceled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“He’s had to overcome a lot,” McMartin said. “He’s had to be a bit of a visionary and say, ‘You know what, it’s not always going to be like this. It’ll get better.’ It hasn’t been anything like what a normal year is like. He missed a whole freshman year of football. He’s making it up now, but he’s had to be patient, so I think that’s been the real challenge he’s had to deal with.”

While he was rightfully disappointed, Parham saw the season’s cancellation as an opportunity to get closer with his new teammates.

“Going from high school to college is a big step, and them canceling (the season) was almost a blessing in disguise,” Parham said. “It gave us more time to bond and prep. I think the people who used that time wisely really benefited from it.”

McMartin said Parham’s transition to collegiate football has been pretty good so far, but he’s looking forward to seeing Parham get even better.

“He goes against a lot of big offensive lineman, and it’s nice that he has the size to go toe to toe with them,” McMartin said. “He’s a first-year player, so he’s learning. The game is different, the speed is different, the physical nature of guys is a little different, and he’s growing into that. But he’s helped us out a lot, and he’s done a really good job so far.”

Kory Parham recognizes his son’s ability to keep himself from failing. He said one of his best attributes is recognizing where he is best fit. He knows his son will do whatever it takes to succeed at Central.

Centennial sophomore pitches perfect game

In Major League Baseball’s 145 years, only 23 perfect games have been recorded.

The achievement isn’t quite that rare at the high school level, but it is still a notable accomplishment for Centennial sophomore Cristian Mogen.

Mogen threw 84 pitches in the recent 6-0 win over Glendale’s Kellis High School, striking out 14 of the 21 batters he faced, without allowing a single one to get on base.

“It felt pretty good. I haven’t really done anything like that,” Mogen said.

“It was a pretty good moment in my baseball career, so it was really nice.”

It wasn’t until the fifth inning that he realized the accomplishment was within reach, when Centennial coach Jon Williams had to decide whether to pull Mogen or give him a shot at completing his perfect game.

Jon (Williams), pulled me aside and told me that I was about to be at my pitch count for that week, but he didn’t know if he wanted to pull me because I was perfect. He made the decision while we were hitting to leave me in, so yeah, that’s basically when I realized that I was going perfect.”

Primarily a shortstop until this year, Mogen is relatively new to pitching and said he didn’t expect something like this happen so quickly.

“This is my first year pitching for high school, and I’m just getting used to it,” Mogen said. “Going into the first couple games, it was a new experience to pitch against varsity-level players and other teams like that, so I was kind of surprised that (the perfect game) happened.”

He said his previous outing against Apollo, a 7-0 complete-game victory where he struck out 10, proved to himself that he was ready to pitch at the SEE GAME PAGE 16

“I think it gave me a lot of confidence because going into the Apollo game, we knew that they were a good team and we couldn’t take them lightly,” Mogen said. “Getting through the whole game with a shutout felt really good. My team backed me up with a lot of defense. Our whole team was just doing great, and it was a big confidence boost going into the Kellis games.”

With a comfortable 6-0 lead, Mogen said he didn’t feel much pressure to finish his perfect game when he returned to the mound for the seventh and final inning.

“I wasn’t really stressing over it.

My team was playing great defense behind me, and I went out there and just did what I did in the other innings, just hoped everything fell into place,” Mogen said. “I’ve just been trying to not overthink things, because stressing about it makes it worse.”

“Throughout my baseball career, Jon has coached me through all age groups.

When I was 8, I played on a club team with him, and we’ve just been going up through the ages,” Mogen said. “There’s another coach, coach (Roberto) Ramos on Centennial, we’ve just been playing club ball together through the years, and they’ve just been coaching me up. They’ve basically made me who I am today.”

He also stressed how important his teammates were in accomplishing the feat.

“For the perfect game, there were a lot of good defensive plays. It wasn’t just me pitching,” Mogen said. “There were a couple pretty tough plays that the defense made, so it was

mostly on the defense. I was just there throwing strikes.”

After growing up idolizing former Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer, Mogen said his current role model is a Texas Rangers prospect and Glendale native.

“A younger role model who I have is a guy named Jonathan Ornelas. He got drafted by the Rangers,” Mogen said. “I knew his brother while I was growing up, and the way he worked at everything that he did, I just kind of looked up to him.”

He said his dream is to play college baseball in a few years and hopefully turn pro, but for now, Mogen is focused on helping the Coyotes.

“I feel like we’re going to do really good this year. With coach Jon being head coach for his second year now, I feel like the whole culture has changed,” Mogen said. “We’re playing as a good team, everyone is putting together good at-bats, and everyone’s playing with a team mentality. I feel like we can do big things this year.”

achieve,” he said. “Along with that, he’s a true student of the game. He sees what goes on around him. He’s fine-tuning everything he sees to become a better athlete, player and teammate.”

Parham credits his smooth transition to college ball to his alma mater, Sunrise Mountain High School.

“Sunrise Mountain did a really good job preparing us to be adults and good men, which I think really helped once I got to college and understood how it was going to be,” he said. “I was already prepared for it.”

Parham is majoring in business management at Central. In the long run, Parham wants to be a firefighter, but through the love he has for his family and the family-oriented mindset his parents instilled in him from a young age, he is driven to use his major for something bigger.

“I came to college to get my business degree to help my dad,” Parham said. “He’s starting a general contracting business. And my mom is

trying to become co-owner of a medical finance company. They’re both trying to run a business, so I just kind of figured why not play football and also get a degree so I can also help my family out.”

The connection Parham has with his family is evident. Kory Parham believes Kaleb’s future is bright. He is beyond prideful in his son’s achievements.

“I’m really honored and proud as a parent of my son,” Kory said. “When he was growing up, a lot of people would say, ‘Oh, you’re Kory’s son.’

After watching him over the last four years, I’m now proud to say that I’m Kaleb’s dad.”

“He’s transcended not only as a player but as a person as well. I love the fact that people gravitate to him and look at him as a solid, down-toearth guy that is willing to help anybody. He genuinely just cares about people.

“His biggest thing is just always trying to do the right thing.”

Bull Shooters continues to help the neighborhood

Mike Bates, a former star baseball player at Apollo High School and Phoenix College, didn’t want his love for sports to wane. He joined an adult softball team and, naturally, after each game they headed to sports bars to reminisce.

Unexpectedly, he bought a sports bar, Six Shooters, in 2008 and rebranded it Bull Shooters Billiards & Sports Bar. However, the battle to obtain a liquor license turned into a fight to save the neighborhood.

In its last three months, Six Shooters had 23 calls for police service before Bates took it over, he said. Last year, Bull Shooters didn’t require police to visit once.

“We had to persuade the neighborhood, the police department, everybody, because they all voted against the opening. Then they gave me six

months to prove I was worth it,” said Bates, a Glendale resident, in his dartboard room of his bar.

Bates proved the 29,000-squarefoot Bull Shooters would be family friendly, an asset to the community and a stellar business partner, and he was granted a liquor license. He created a business-homeowner alliance to help upgrade the neighborhood.

“It’s about rejuvenating this area,” he said. “They were ready to close this shopping center and tear it down if we didn’t take this space.

“The only big thing here when we came in was Laser Quest. They had an agreement or whatever that said if it wasn’t 50% occupied, they could get out of there.”

During the pandemic, Bates grabbed his staff and visited a different restaurant regularly to boost sales.

rant is owned and operated by Bates and his family. His wife, Julie, cooks homemade food, and his daughter, Jamie, is a manager.

The room boasts 50-plus largescreen plasma TVs, 45 billiards tables, 20 dartboards, shuffleboard, foosball, 30 draft beers including craft, offtrack horses, homemade food, and karaoke after 9 p.m.

“It’s like Walmart or Disneyland for adults,” Bates said with a laugh. “You can buy lottery tickets and scratchers here. We have karaoke at night, dart leagues at night. My wife makes the best homemade green chili.”

“This isn’t just bar food,” said Bates, who was drafted four times by the MLB. Bull Shooters has been voted the best billiards or pool hall in Arizona five times and the best in America Smothered green chili burrito

It’s a logical award for Bates, who switched his attention from baseball to softball to darts. He soon found success in that, too, being named to the National Dart Hall of Fame in 2010 and the American Art Hall of Fame in 2012.

Through dart competitions, he’s raised $250,000 for charities, including $11,000 for the Granite Mountain Hotshots.

“We have our differences and all that,” he said about dart players. “But when it’s something like that, we all come together and support each other.

Every year, we do the St. Mary’s Food Bank benefit. It’s funny because they left one of the boxes behind. It’s by our front door. I looked at it yesterday and it’s full again. That says a lot for our guests.”

A professor stood before his class with items on the table in front of him. When the class began, he picked up a large and empty mayonnaise jar and filled it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

Then the professor picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. Of course, the pebbles rolled into the open areas between the rocks. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. The sand filled up everything else. He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “yes.”

“Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things — your family, your partner,

Let’s change that. Let’s make our inner space at least as necessary as our outer space.

Recently, my friend Dick Knights and I were fishing. He made an observation that refocused my priorities. He noted these current COVID-19 times have revealed that most people are obsessed with their physical health but not their spiritual health. They will do anything to preserve their physical lives and do next to nothing about preserving their spiritual lives. We humans are a spirit, we have a soul and we live in a body.

Our bodies will die, but our spirit lives forever. Don’t allow earthly stuff to crowd out heavenly stuff.

In many ways, the entire life of Jesus was about setting priorities and adher-

your health and your children — things that if you lost everything else and only they remained, your life would still be whole. The pebbles are the other things that matter — like your job, your house, your car.

“The sand is everything else — the small stuff. If you put the sand into the jar first, there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same applies to your life.

“If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the essential things. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, have a dinner party or fix the disposal.

Take care of the rocks first — the things that matter. Set your priorities. After all, the rest is just sand.”

Consider this. All it takes is one shaping event, one bad medical report, one significant failure or one person you love who just died to discover what matters in life. Don’t let the small stuff take up your time, energy and resources.

OBITUARIES Michael Gene Hart Michael Gene Hart, beloved husband, died on March 12, 2021 at age 67, after a heartbreaking battle with cancer. Born on May 23, 1953, in Tucson, AZ, to Lt. Colonel Gene Hart, USAF, and Charmaine Donohue; Michael grew up primarily in Tucson and Phoenix, AZ, and Albuquerque, NM. Michael found stability, direction, and community from his fellow students, teachers, and the Catholic brothers of The Abbey School in Canon City, CO; attending from 1967 until graduation in 1971.

Next for Michael, the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA, graduating from Raymond College in 1975. An "acting bug" took him to New York City where he studied at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. He eventually gave up the stage for graduate studies in journalism at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

His first job after graduate school in 1990 was as Executive Editor of The Glendale Star and Peoria Times in the Phoenix metropolitan area. It was here that he learned to love community journalism, an interest that landed him a job with the Los Angeles Times in 1998, where he edited for "Our Times," a news section focusing on the vast diversity of L.A. neighborhoods. When "Our Times" was eliminated, Michael found another "local" niche in the business-to-business magazine realm. He edited, first, the San Fernando Valley branch of the L.A. Business Journal then moved on to Editor-in-Chief of Tradeshow Week in the Reed Elsevier family of publications. Even with the waning of print journalism, Michael worked in various capacities for the "B-to-B" world until his untimely death.

Michael married Susan Hunt in Tucson on November 28, 1985. They shared a passion for travel, art, opera, books, liberal causes, dining out, and their beloved cats—to name a few. Though they opted to remain childfree, Michael and Susan found community and family through the Unitarian Universalist (UU) church where they immersed themselves in social activism. Always a leader, Michael served on various boards, including his final role as Board President of the Pacific Southwest District of the UU Association. Of course, ever the journalist, he also wrote for UU World, the magazine of the national UU Association.

After 22 years in Los Angeles (and many fine moments at Dodger Stadium), Michael and Susan returned to Tucson and their beloved Sonoran Desert in 2020. In addition to his wife, Susan, Michael is survived by his half-sisters, Shirley Crotwell, Carol Castillo, and Sandy Bass; all of the greater Albuquerque area. Michael's ashes will be interred in the Memorial Garden of the UU Church of Phoenix at a date to be determined.

1. Sort through your closets, cupboards and garage for items to sell.

2. Partner up with a neighbor or friend. This is helpful to give each other breaks during the day.

3. Advertise your sale — ask us for our Yard Sale Special!

4. In your ad include the type of sale, (e.g., Yard Sale, Multi-Family Sale), date, time, address/ cross streets, and be specific on prices for high dollar items.

Popular items you can include: furniture, appliances, electronics, tools, yard equipment, designer/children’s clothes and shoes, craft items, antiques, unique items and collectibles/ collections.

5. Place signs on major cross streets and on the corners leading into your neighborhood. Just a fat, solid black arrow on colorful poster board works fine.

6. Price your items. If having a Multi-Family sale, each family should have a different colored price tag. You can do a $1 table, $5 table, etc., to save time.

7. Money. Be prepared with change, including coins. Do not accept checks. Cash only!

8. Have electricity available to test items.
