Peoria residents should expect an increase to their water and sewer bills next fiscal year, as council is expected to hear about a proposed rate increase in May. City council will hear about two proposed increases – one for fiscal year 201920 and a second in 2020-21. The increases, if passed, will increase the average bill by approximately $4 over that time. Staff will present their recommendations at the May 21 city council meeting. A 2.27-percent increase is being considered for 2019-20, which would increase
the average bill $1.84 per month. Staff will then request a 2.73-percent increase in 2020-21, which would increase the average bill by $2.26 per month. “Rate increases are necessary from time to time to meet operating and capital needs,” said Sonia Andrews, finance and budget director. “The city’s practice has been to request small incremental rate increases each year to keep up with inflation and increasing operating and capital needs of our utility systems. We believe this incremental approach provides better predictability and affordability for our customers.” Andrews said the reasons for the increas-
