Peoria High School freshman Zuri Muhammad wants to change the world.

The wish is ambitious, but in elementary school, Zuri was troubled by a classmate’s lack of basic needs. With limited funds, Zuri and her mother, Kimberly, founded Zuri’s Circle, to provide the less fortunate with water, food, clothing, furniture, school supplies and uniforms.

The goal is to empower youth, teens and adults through activities, programs and interactive camps.

“I wanted to help my friends and everybody I could when I was younger,” said Zuri, 14. “My mom motivated me to do it, and we started Zuri’s Circle. It’s a nonprofit SEE BRANDON PAGE 4 organization where we help those in need the best we can — especially in Peoria. We make sure they have all the resources and opportunities that everyone has.”

Peoria expands testing with autonomous vehicle

The city of Peoria will test an autonomous shuttle, RoboRide Medical, as part of a four-month pilot program.

The free, electric, driverless shuttle will open to the public at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, in the health care district near Plaza Del Rio Boulevard and will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays.

The city of Peoria will host a launch celebration at Freedom Plaza Courtyard,

located at 13714 N. Plaza Del Rio Boulevard, from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4.

“Peoria is a modern, thriving community embracing the evolution of transit,” Mayor Cathy Carlat said.

“As we evaluate future needs and opportunities, we are thrilled to collaborate with industry leaders and regional groups to identify how fully electric and autonomous vehicles can improve mobility in our community. I look forward to seeing Peoria residents and families joining us as

we study this exciting and innovative concept.”

The city of Peoria partnered with the Maricopa Association of Governments and Beep Inc. — who provides multipassenger, electronic, autonomous mobility solutions — to bring RoboRide Medical to Peoria.

Peoria USD updates its COVID-19 mitigation plan

The Peoria Unified School District has updated its COVID-19 mitigation plan, effective Jan. 3.

In-person instruction All families are encouraged to conduct daily health checks, including taking their children’s temperature before school and assessing them for any symptoms. If they have any COVID-19 symptoms, keep them at home and follow Maricopa County’s COVID-19 isolation protocol.

Close contacts and quarantine Anyone who is identified as a close contact to someone who tested positive for COVID-19 will still be notified by the school. Now that vaccinations are available for individuals ages 5 and older, for those who choose them, quarantine will no longer be used as the first mitigation response to reduce the spread of COVID-19, but rather in a more targeted approach.

Parents will be notified of additional mitigation procedures if the county intervenes due to special circumstances at a school. Absences resulting from

county-required quarantine are marked as excused.

If the county does not implement additional mitigation procedures, quarantining will be a personal choice for children, unless they are symptomatic.

Parents who choose to have their child quarantine should call the school’s attendance line daily to report the absence. They should also notify the child’s teacher so that they can help with home learning.

Although prematurely suspended due to the pandemic, Peoria received positive feedback and useful data regarding driverless technology.

With ASU’s help, the city of Peoria and MAG will study the feasibility of autonomous vehicles in a health care district. This analysis will provide data on high-tech mobility options and ridership patterns to better understand future transit opportunities and mobility solutions.

Plaza Del Rio is home to more than 100 medical facilities and over 500 senior living residences. This service connects Peoria residents from their point of origin to their destination within the same service area.

“MAG is dedicated to exploring emerging technologies that provide transportation access and convenience to our region’s residents and improve quality of life,” said John Giles, Mesa mayor and MAG Regional Council chair.

“The RoboRide Medical pilot project reflects the region’s commitment to transportation improvement and affirms that the region is open to new technologies that improve the efficiency, safety and operations of our transportation system. This type of forward thinking and planning is necessary to ensure regional competitiveness for the benefit of our residents.”

RoboRide Medical has no steering wheel or pedals and will operate using a pre-programmed, fixed route. No appointment, fee or pre-screening is necessary.

Additionally, the shuttle can accommodate passengers with mobility needs, including riders with wheelchairs or scooters. The shuttle will always have an attendant on board to ensure riders have a pleasant and safe experience.

The Beep Command Center will remotely provide an additional layer of safety and support by communicating with the attendant at any time. RoboRide Medical holds approximately eight passengers and will operate at a

maximum speed of 15 miles per hour.

“We are thrilled to return to such an innovative community like the city of Peoria,” said Joe Moye, Beep chief executive officer.

“Our partnership with the city and the Maricopa Association of Governments provides the perfect synergy to enable mobility for all communities and people.

lic speaking, adopt-a-classroom, youth leadership, after-school activities, Be Powerful Mentorship, community gardening, Reading with Israail, and Together Building Youth Scholarship.

“We have a garden at Peoria Elementary School, and because of that, they allow us to go into the school with the students and teach them how to garden,” Kimberly said.

“We talk to them about healthy eating habits and how to cook the food that is grown in the garden.”

Helping with the Community Gardening program at Peoria Elementary School is private chef Jibriel “Chef Bombay” Saunders. The Muhammads believe gardening allows youth to think critically, problem solve, and get creative in the kitchen.

“We harvested so many vegetables in the midst of the pandemic, and we decided to keep it going,” said Saunders, who lives in Glendale.

“We don’t know if this is going to happen again. So, we’ve been trying our hardest to really help families in Peoria.”

Saunders met the Muhammads six years ago through his work with rapper/Netflix star Ali Tomineek.

“Zuri is an amazing individual,” the Peoria High School graduate said. “I believe she’s just so talented in many ways. She needs to be recognized. It makes me extremely excited to see her out there working with the youth. All of our missions align, so we teamed up and we wanted to work together. I believe she’s a great candidate for whatever opportunity arises for her.”

Zuri’s siblings are just as giving as her.

A student/wide receiver at Clarion University in Pennsylvania, Kahliq, 23, founded the Show the World clothing line.

“He does that to promote to young people — including himself — that there’s more to life than just sports,” Kimberly said. “You can show the world so many sides of you.”

A former Peoria High School football player, Kahlil, 21, recently grad-

uated from Full Sail University and works as a music producer/engineer.

Israail, 9, plays basketball and promotes literacy through Zuri’s Circle, Kimberly said.

Idris, 12, “just wants to play basketball” and explore his options.

“I’m proud of every last one of them,” Kimberly said. “I raised them all to be charitable. She just took more to it. They all do charitable acts, but she wanted to do more. That’s how Zuri’s Circle came about.”

Besides her supportive mother, Zuri has plenty of supporters in her corner. Nicole Mayfield, who helms You Matter Too, an antibullying nonprofit, met Zuri through Kimberly.

The two are longtime friends who lost touch when Mayfield moved away in 1996 but reconnected in 2017 after she returned to town.

and learned about Zuri being bullied that we decided to partner to help bring awareness about bullying and the toll it takes on the person,” Mayfield said.

“There was no way I was going

to let this beautiful little girl with a heart of gold continue to be bullied and lose her passion for helping people.”

Mayfield said Zuri — You Matter Too’s first experience candidate — was bullied because she was “shining in the community and they were doing everything to dim her light.

“She was isolating herself and hiding her cute little face behind her hoodie. You Matter Too made sure to let her know just how awesome she was and wanted her to know that we would support her in any way that

she needed us.

“Zuri is beyond remarkable, and I am so glad to see that she is embracing her greatness. It is definitely an honor to collaborate with her. I am super proud of the young woman that she has become and know that she is going to do greater things.” PT

Nine indicted for PPP fraud Dream City raising funds

Jason Coleman, 40, and Kimberly Coleman, 38, of Mesa, made their initial appearance in federal court on a 62-count indictment charging them with conspiracy, bank fraud, wire fraud and transactional money laundering.

A federal grand jury previously indicted the Colemans and seven other individuals in connection with a fraudulent scheme to obtain approximately $23 million in Paycheck Protection Program loans. The nine defendants are accused of then using those PPP funds to purchase vehicles, properties and other luxurious items.

According to the indictments, from April 2020 through April 2021, the conspirators in this scheme submitted or assisted in submitting PPP loan applications on behalf of 18 businesses, seeking loans between $100,000 and $2.2 million each.

In the loan applications, the defendants certified that each business was in operation and had employees for whom it paid salaries and payroll taxes, that the funds would be used to retain workers or make mortgage, lease or utility payments, and that the information provided in the loan applications was true and accurate.

According to the indictment charging the Colemans, the married couple conspired to prepare and submit approximately two dozen false and fraudulent PPP loan applications in an attempt to receive more than $30 million in PPP funds. The Colemans were successful in 10 of those submissions and fraudulently obtained more than $13 million in PPP funds.

According to the eight other connected indictments, seven defendants conspired to submit eight false and fraudulent PPP loan applications and received more than $10 million in PPP funds. The individuals named in the indictments include: • Willie Mitchell aka Blu Mitchell, 40, of Phoenix.

• Jason Nolte, 39, of Phoenix.

• Sean Swaringer, 56, of Peoria.

• Vanessa Swaringer, 54, of Peoria.

• Toni Richardson, 52, of Phoenix.

• Keenya Williams, 40, of Phoenix.

• Darrell Lieteau, 56, of Phoenix.

These cases were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, Homeland Security Investigation, and the Small Business Administration-Office of the Inspector General. Dream City Foundation is hosting its third annual Stop Traffic Walk from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Peoria Sports Complex, 16101 N. 83rd Avenue, Peoria.

The walk is in support of Where Hope Lives, the largest human trafficking rescue and recovery operation in North America and the second largest in the world.

Along with the walk, this event will also feature music, food and ceremonies to support victims and survivors of human trafficking.

Where Hope Lives provides resources to give survivors a fresh start at places like Phoenix Dream Center (for those 18 and older), StreetLight USA (ages 13 to 17) and Short Creek Dream Center (familial trafficking

survivors).

Fasten your seat belt for the New Year, folks

Are you ready to board Flight 2022?

Well, fasten your seat belts because we are on the verge of saying “hello” to a New Year. Ready or not, it is coming, so we might as well pop the cork, pour the bubbly, and watch the ball in Time Square (or boot in Prescott) drop.

Time, once again, is marching into the beginning of a new calendar, dragging us along with it.

New Year’s celebrations have been going on for over 4,000 years. This is the oldest of holidays and was first observed in ancient Babylon with a festival that lasted for 11 days! It was those party animals, the Babylonians, who first came up with the idea to make New Year’s resolutions. What would

those earliest resolutions be? The most common was to return borrowed tools.

(If you have a few tools that you borrowed from a neighbor still in your garage, now might be the time to return them).

My colleague has made a resolution that she will not shop for any clothes or shoes in 2022 (drastic). I have a friend who says she is going to train her Arabian for a 100-mile race (unbelievable). A cousin claims she will not cook a thing in 2022 so she can “rest” her culinary skills and do more creative things (crazy). Hmmm, in my house not cooking translates to not eating.

And so it goes.

But why even bother with resolutions? Aren’t they just impossible little statements that cause disappointment?

Let’s get past this ancient ritual and just embrace the New Year with a reasonable attitude.

Mark Twain had a philosophy that

we should keep all of our “bad habits.”

He wrote that habits are like baggage that comes in handy when your ship is sinking and you need to throw something overboard. He claimed that when your health begins to fail, it is always good to have a “few bad habits,” like smoking, drinking and overeating, that you can “toss aside.” I mentioned this philosophy to my physician, and she adamantly disagrees. On that note, I suppose healthy eating and lifestyle choices should be a resolution worth considering.

Reflecting back on 2021 might cause us to wonder how the year flew by.

Many Americans moved, left their jobs and worked from home. It seems like everyone was remodeling. Housing prices soared. So did gas prices and inflation.

We learned how to have meetings on Zoom and video calls became a big part of our life. Many folks limit-

ed travel, parties and gatherings. The coronavirus reared its head and still caused havoc. We experienced supply shortages that we simply aren’t used to in America.

And we cooked. As one woman emailed me, “Never did I consider that being an adult would mean that I will need to cook dinner every night. Of my entire life. For the rest of my life.” Yes, the cooking classes began at the beginning of the pandemic and have never stopped.

Welcome aboard Flight 2022. Takeoff is New Year’s Day. There is no baggage allowed on this flight. Only positive attitudes, hope for better days, and faith for reaching new heights.

And then Omicron showed up, which is exactly America’s luck in 2021.

The spiking pandemic gives rise to a question, one that feels a little bit like some bad “Hamlet,” given that vacation issues are a decidedly first-world problem to have in the midst of global affliction.

To go or not to go? To get on that jetliner, which departs tonight, or to cancel our plans and instead spend Christmas watching “Miracle on 34th Street” instead of living it?

Some background: We have both been vaccinated three times, and thus have been maximally protected against the dread virus. We are both in good

health. We both understand that New York City will still be there next month, next year, next vacation or the one after that.

And yet making the trip still feels tempting, especially when you run the numbers in your head. Last week in New York City, the infection rate among all 8 million residents was 193 infections for every 100,000 people.

That’s a tenth of a percentage point chance of getting sick — and the infection rate for the vaccinated is half as much.

GUHSD aide named Cardinals Fan of the Year

Robert Freedman has been beating the odds all his life. His parents were told at his birth that the 1-pound, 10-ounce boy born 11 weeks early may not walk or talk.

With determination and a strong will, Freedman did thrive. He graduated with honors from ASU and has worked for 12 years as a special education instructional assistant at Glendale Union High School District’s Washington High School.

Now, he’s hoping his strength rubs off on the struggling Arizona Cardinals, for whom he gives unwavering support. Freedman was named the Cardinals NFL Fan of the Year.

The NFL launched the Fan of the Year contest presented by Captain Morgan to celebrate extraordinary fans who inspire others through their love of football and bring an “original spice” to what it means to be a fan.

In collaboration with the 32 clubs, the NFL collected nearly 35,000 submissions from fans vying for the chance to represent their team as a nominee. The contest will seek to identify one winner among the final 32 nominees to be named the ultimate NFL Fan of the Year at NFL Honors in February 2022.

“The teachers and administrators surprised me by wearing Cardinals gear to celebrate me getting Fan of the Year,” Freedman said.

Like the NFL, his mother, Mickey Freedman, sees her son as the ultimate fan.

“He takes his group seriously,” she said. “He wants people to share their stories and their selfies. It’s his baby.

It’s his love. He goes to two out-ofstate games a year. I must say he’s passionate.”

His home and work desk reflect his feelings about the Cardinals. Pen-

nants, autographed memorabilia, football cards and jerseys fill his Phoenix home. One of his most prized possessions is a mini helmet autographed by Larry Fitzgerald.

“I’m a proud mother,” said Mickey, who has worked as a counselor at Moon Valley, Independence and Sunnyslope high schools. “He has notebooks. He’ll even write guys and ask them to sign and send back items. In

his fan cave, he has a bunch of collectibles. He’s come very far. He knows his stuff. He’s very loved at school.”

Freedman has been part of the Red Sea since he was 9. He lives for his 400-level season tickets, where he has become somewhat of a celebrity, by all accounts.

“The game of football is a lot of fun,” he said. “I like to see players score touchdowns. Football is just action packed.”

In February 2015, Freedman founded the private Facebook page AZ BirdGang Nation. Now with more than 13,600 members, AZ BirdGang is a networking and fan group.

“I wanted to start a group,” he said matter-of-factly. “If you never try, you never know. I just have a passion for the Cardinals, and I want to try to connect with other people on Facebook.”

Connection is key to Freedman, who was mainstreamed in early elementary school. His father was killed in a car crash 25 years ago when he and his sister were 10 and 12, respectively. He was the rock for the family.

“He wants to make the world a better place,” Mickey said. “He was nominated homecoming king (at Sunnyslope High School) and was invited to speak at graduation. He truly loves life. We are big Dodger fans, but he started with the Cardinals. They are his No. 1 love.”

“I know of one occasion where a student had to have his appendix out.

Mickey said during the COVID-19 quarantine, he supported the students by handing out 400 Chromebooks and performing other tasks.

“He said, ‘Well, mom, I don’t know whatever is next,’” she recalled. “‘You never know.’ I never had such a great time until Rob came. We did crazy things. We travel around. He never met a ‘stranger’; he’s friends with everyone. He’s a lot like my husband was.” PT

Akshat Sethi had an itch. The successful financier/entrepreneur wanted to try his hand at being a restaurateur.

Like everything he touches, he found gold.

Thai Chili 2 Go has become an Arizona favorite and, recently, it opened a store in Peoria. Through Friday, Dec. 31, the Peoria location at 16955 N. 75th Avenue is giving guests one free order of six crispy Thai chicken dumplings and hoisin sauce with a purchase of an entrée. “Our expansion plans are aggressive,” Sethi said. “New stores here were delayed by the COVID-19 supply chain issues and construction delays.

We’re looking at a couple more stores in the first quarter 2022.”

CreatiVets empowers wounded veterans through arts

Joel Shewmake has written songs for the likes of Brad Paisley, Montgomery Gentry, Gary Allan, Lonestar and Jerrod Niemann.

He calls being in a room with Purple Heart recipient Adam Mitchell an “honor.” The two penned the single “I’m With You” as part of a monthly project helmed by Nashville-based nonprofit CreatiVets and Big Machine Label Group.

They release a new veteran-written track on the 20th of every month to pay tribute to the 20 veterans and active-duty members who die by suicide every day.

cess,” said Shewmake, also the featured artist on “I’m With You.” “I would like to keep being involved.”

Written by veteran Mitchell and his mentor Greg Pihs alongside Shewmake and fellow songwriter Brian Davis, the song is meant to serve as a form of therapy for the involved veterans.

For Mitchell, finding the program was fate. Since sustaining several injuries to the head and neck while serving overseas in 2005, he has struggled with communication, memory and balance and continues to navigate the difficulties around post-traumatic stress.

“It’s real and emotional,” Mitchell said about “I’m With You.” “Writing is an easier way for me to express myself.”

Mitchell is new to music, although he does jot down lyrics to clear his mind.

He has played the drums since 1993, and he is learning the guitar.

Shewmake, however, is a longtime songwriter. He moved from Cookev-

ille, Tennessee, to Nashville to pursue a career in music among the millions of others who desire the same thing.

To become successful, Shewmake networked with other songwriters.

“If it hadn’t been for songwriting, I wouldn’t be able to manage my emotions,” he said. “I know I can put words on paper just to let some of the emotions out. It can be a terrible song. It’s just nice to get some of that stuff written down, even if you throw it away.

“If I couldn’t do that, it would have been a harder life.”

Throughout Shewmake’s career, he has had his fair share of rejection, but projects like this one with Mitchell make it all worthwhile.

years, I’ve had my eyes focused on whatever goals. I wasn’t seeing the impact of what you’re doing. This really helps me a lot to see the impact of what we’re doing and the people being moved by it.”

A twist of fate Mitchell stumbled across CreatiVets while looking for a veteran-based music learning program. After a deep dive, the music fan found CreatiVets “extremely intriguing.”

“With my TBI (traumatic brain injury), music has helped me remember things easier and more vividly,” Mitchell said.

“When I was able to start the writing process of my song, I honestly had no idea what I wanted to write about.

I started telling a little of my story and then was able to easily fixate on what I wanted the message to be. I wanted it to be based around my kids and let them know that no matter the obstacles in life, I will be there for them.

I have always tried to see negative events more as lessons than being wrapped up by the event itself; thus making the line, ‘I’ve learned from the best on who not to be,’ my favorite.”

Founded in 2013, CreatiVets has helped more than 1,000 combat veterans — with more than 500 veterans participating in its songwriting programs. Mitchell admitted he felt a little vulnerable because he exposed something so real to him. Since his experience with CreatiVets, he got over his fear of showing his true self.

Mitchell served in the infantry in the Marine Corps from 2002 to 2006, mainly out of Washington and Twentynine Palms, California.

Pastor Bill Johnson says: “We need to remain childlike.

Children don’t dream of being insignificant.” We need to be reminded of this during these crazy, nonsensical times. Children start off seeing life beautifully and innocently.

But eventually, life gets to them, molds them, holds them and hurts them. So often, temporary negatives become permanent negatives, and lifetimes are spent searching for significance in all the wrong places.

Recently, I found a short story my son, Matthew, wrote when he was about 10 years old. It illustrates how children don’t dream of being insignificant. The story is called “The Bass.”

If you think fishermen have big fish stories, wait until you read Matt’s fish story: “One day, I went fishing with my dad

of God, we must become trusting like a child. Otherwise, complex adult issues like those mentioned will paralyze us.

To the pure, everything is pure.

When truth, simplicity and purity come, dragon people can’t see good or God anymore. They lose trust in God, and they lose their perspective. God is there, but they can’t see God at work on their behalf.

Wise but trusting people see God in both the good and the bad. The mature Christ followers and people see God in pleasures and palaces and the barnyards and stables of life. When wise people follow a star and find a stable, they look for God in the stable and find Him. That takes seeing things the way God sees them by looking through the eyes of a child.

God chose to become a baby, not a “razzle-dazzle” form of a king, politician or entertainer. But, given time, that baby proved more potent than the whole Roman Empire. John Maxwell wrote about this truth a writer penned

Well, you just looked through the eyes of Matthew, who has a big imagination and an even bigger positive attitude.

As Pastor Johnson said, children don’t dream of being insignificant, especially 10-year-old Matt. It does mental and emotional harm to us adults to hate, gripe, become wounded, bitter, cynical or lose our joy. It’s even worse to lose our childlike trust and perspective. Friedrich Nietzsche said, “He who fights too long against dragons becomes a dragon himself.” The most brutal prison to escape can be one’s mind.

Jesus addressed this idea in Matthew: 18. He wanted the people living through the dark times to look at life through the eyes of a child. Jesus didn’t mean they should be childish. Instead, he suggested that to enter the kingdom

“While dad thought about how I caught it on my ‘hipper’-size crankbait, I cast my lure again toward a big rock. This rock was not a pebble. It was a huge, mega-size, bone-crushing rock.

Well, I started reeling it in, and I felt a nibble. WWWWAAAHHHH!!!! Dad! Matt! AAAHH! SPLASH!!! Blurb, blurb.

“Then I saw it. It was huge! It dragged me through the weeds and rocks. (The rock part kind of hurt.) Then I saw a tree, grabbed it, and I hung on for dear life. I started reeling the bass in. Finally, I got him close enough to grab him.

Bad idea on my part. Weeeeeeeee! It was awesome. I saw the boat. I grabbed the boat and the fish and climbed in.

PUBLIC NOTICE PROPOSALS FOR FY 2022-2023 On January 3, 2022, the City will begin accepting proposals for the use of HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME), Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and General Fund Not-for-Profit grants for the July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023 funding cycle. The City anticipates receiving CDBG funds of approximately $830,000 and a HOME Program allocation of approximately $220,000. The exact allocations will not be determined until finalized by the Federal Government. The City also anticipates General Fund monies of $196,500 to be available. The proposal submission deadline for agencies who wish to utilize these funds is January 24, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. Funds are anticipated to be available in July 2022, for General Fund programs and October 2022, for Federal programs.

All applicants will be required to submit proposals utilizing ZoomGrants, an on-line, cloud-based system.

Applicants interested in applying for grant funding must register with ZoomGrants in order to obtain a login and access to the City’s grant applications. A link to ZoomGrants and the applications will be available on the City’s website at www.peoriaaz.gov/notforprofitgrants beginning January 3, 2022.
