Brandon Act to help military mental health

Liberty High School graduate Brandon Caserta was known for being kind and generous.

Now the late Navy sailor will help others through the Brandon Act, which, when President Joe Biden signs the act, will make it easier for service members to seek mental health care confidentially.

“He absolutely loved helping everybody,” said his mother, Teri Caserta. “I don’t think there was anybody he turned away for help. He would even help somebody who did not care for him. Of course, they’d become friends after that.”

Peoria City Council selects redistricting map

The Peoria City Council chose a new redistricting map Dec. 14, and it will be implemented before the 2022 election.

Of the five finalist maps, No. 4 was determined by majority vote to be the new map.

“After a robust and citizen-centric redistricting process that included eight

in-person meetings, two virtual meetings, an online engagement process and online mapping software, Peoria City Council approved a new council district map,” Peoria Mayor Cathy Carlat said.

Polar plunge for a purpose

The city of Peoria’s annual Winter Water Safety Day and Polar Plunge is 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at Centennial Pool, 8081 W. Acoma Drive.

Families are invited to take the plunge and swim across an unheated pool to raise water safety awareness.

Participants will receive a free T-shirt and a hot breakfast provided by the Peoria Firefighter Charities. The event is free but donations that go toward free swim lessons are accepted. Registration is required. To register or donate, visit peoriaaz.gov/aquatics.

Firework safety during the holidays

In Arizona, state law mandates the use and sale of consumer fireworks.

Peoria officials remind residents that fireworks are dangerous and can cause significant harm to people and pets, as well as damage to property and open space.

Consumer fireworks may be sold Dec. 10 through Jan. 3. However, legal consumer fireworks may only be used Dec. 24 through Jan. 3. Aerial and explosive fireworks such as sky-

Holiday recycling tips

With wrapping paper and boxes around the house this holiday season, it is important to know which items are recyclable. When nonrecyclable items are placed in a single recycle container, contamination can occur, causing an entire truckload of material to be rejected from the materials recovery facility. Here are some tips for holiday recycling: • Ribbons, bows and glittery wrapping paper are not recyclable and should be placed in the trash.

• Bubble wrap packaging, Styrofoam, packing peanuts and plastic bags do not belong in recycle.

• Paper, flattened boxes, beverage glass and plastic bottles are recyclable and belong in recycle.

Bulk trash cleanup program offered twice a year

The city of Peoria provides bulk trash service twice a year to residents who receive trash and recycle services from the solid waste division.

Dead body found in Lake Pleasant boat fire

A man was found dead by firemen extinguishing a boat fire at Lake Pleasant marina Dec. 14.

Several fire and police crews responded to reports of a boat fire just after 4 p.m. In putting out the

flames, a body was found. The cause of the fire is unknown, as is the cause of death for the deceased.

Peoria police have taken over investigating the case but do not believe there to be foul play. “@PeoriaPoliceAZ and @PeoriaFire investigating a fatal boat fire in the marina at Lake

Pleasant,” Peoria PD tweeted around 7 p.m. the day of the fire.

“One adult male was located deceased in the boat. Detectives will be investigating what caused the fire and the man’s death. We will provide additional info when available.”

The following morning, Peoria police spokesman Sgt. Brandon Sheffert said the investigation is ongoing.

“They are still trying to determine the cause of the fire; however, at this time they do not believe it to be criminal,” Sheffert said. “We have not been able to positively identify the victim.” PT

the Brandon Act, legislation they introduced named in honor of the fallen U.S. Navy petty officer third class. The act is headed to Biden’s desk.

“For months, I worked with Republicans and Democrats to get the language of the Brandon Act in the defense bill,” Kelly said.

“Today, our hard work has paid off. Thanks to the tireless advocacy of Teri and Patrick Caserta, and bipartisan support in Congress, our efforts will help us confront military suicide head-on and save the lives of other young service members.”

Moulton, the bill’s author, added, “America’s service members shouldn’t have to settle for a broken system that’s incapable of providing them with the mental health support they need, and today’s vote means they no longer have to. This bill is an important piece of Brandon’s legacy — one that will save the lives of so many great American heroes. I’m proud of his parents for fighting to make sure that families of other service members never have to share their experience, and I look forward to continuing to do this work alongside them.”

Brandon died by suicide on June 25, 2018, on the flight line at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia. After his death, his parents and friends discovered six notes in which Brandon attributed his suicide to persistent hazing and bullying from some members and leaders of his Navy helicopter squadron.

The Brandon Act expands the existing law that regulates how service members are referred for mental health evaluations, in order to provide a confidential channel for service members to self-report mental health issues. The process would protect the confidentiality of service members, similar to the restricted reporting option that protects victims of sexual assault.

The Brandon Act is supported by several original cosponsors, including Rep. Joseph Morelle (D-NY),

Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), Rep. Kaialiʻi Kahele (D-HI), Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI), Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA), Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-AZ) and Rep. Marilyn Strickland (D-WA).

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) is an original co-sponsor of the companion bill in the Senate. Additional members of Congress joined in supporting amendments to include this measure in the NDAA. Teri said she was in tears when she and Patrick heard the news.

“We’re elated,” she said.

“It’s definitely needed,” Patrick added. “There is a lot more work that needs to be done to get suicides down to zero in the military. There are 25 a day at the moment. The public doesn’t really know this. It’s not that anybody is keeping this a secret. It’s just not a good subject to write about, obviously. We want to put a stop to it. It’s unnecessary for all those deaths to happen.”

The Peoria couple did not know this was a problem until Brandon’s death. Patrick was on active duty for 22 years and in Navy recruiting for 15.

“I had no idea,” he added. “I don’t understand why I didn’t know.”

Labor of love

The Brandon Act’s passage was a labor of love for the Casertas.

Patrick and Teri sought help from Sen. Kyrsten Sinema but, Patrick said, staff would not help with the act. In a moment of desperation, the couple bought a new car, hopped in it and drove to Washington, D.C. “In 2019, we were allowed in Capitol Hill without an escort,” she said. “We went door to door for the most part. That’s how it started.

Ironically, the chief of staff at Congressman Moulton’s office had this tragedy happen to him, too.

“He sat down and talked to us, what they could do and how to work with them. After that, we went to Martha McSally’s office. The act passed the House and, due to Ari-

zona laws, she lost the election and her staff had to leave right away.”

That was a “crunch time,” she said, when the Brandon Act went to committee in 2020. It did not make it through. However, Kelly took over and “ran with it on the Senate side,” she said.

“We got to meet with him personally and by Zoom,” Teri said. “Rep. Moulton took the House, and Kelly took the Senate. They were able to get it passed in the House, and the two of them worked together and was able to get it in the Senate. They did outstanding work on this. Sen. Kelly is retired Navy, and Congressman Moulton is a veteran.

They convinced everyone that this needed to be done.”

The couple said Brandon’s story can be used to save others.

“This is an important story,” Terri said. “This is a victory for the service members. They’re going to benefit from this. Future veterans will benefit. Active duty will get the help they need.

“We want to work with the VA and Congress to get more help for active duty. We need to decrease veteran suicides, too. The biggest

key is how to ask for help, get help, and learning that people want to help you. That’s the biggest thing that a service member needs to understand. 2%, Hispanic population by 1.4%, and Hispanic voting age by 1.5%.

The Acacia District will see decreases in overall minority population by 5.34%, minority voting age by 5%, Hispanic population by 4.2%, and Hispanic voting age by 4.25%.

Each age-restricted master-planned community will be entirely contained in a district, with no more than a single one in each. Each member of the council will continue to remain in their current district.

Accusations of gerrymandering and decreasing minority voting power were made at the council leading up to the meeting.

Mesquite District Councilmember Bridget Binsbacher said she doesn’t want minority residents to feel taken advantage of or forgotten.

“The fact that there is the perception out there that we do not serve all people was of great concern to me,” Binsbacher said.

“I don’t see it that way at all, but

I’m not living in their shoes. If there are people out there who feel that way, I want to hear from them. I say this in all sincerity — I am a proud Hispanic woman. I am American of Mexican descent, second generation. My grandparents came here through the proper channels, earned their citizenship, and were hard-working citizens of this country. I, in no way, want to not be here for the Hispanic community or any community. We are one Peoria.”

Pine District Councilmember Denette Dunn voiced her concern that other councilmembers may have prioritized political self-interests over the public’s opinion.

“What about a councilmember cutting out the competition and putting those two candidates in a different district?” Dunn said.

“Could that be politically motivated?

I don’t know. We all have to look at all this information. I’m not saying that it is or isn’t. There are a lot of things

that are just not making sense. Why are we not listening to the public? Why aren’t we looking more at maps one and three?”

The new map will make a large impact on the population of each district, with an ideal population mark set at 31,831.

Mesquite District is set to receive the largest change with a loss of 8,476 residents, resulting in a total population change from 41,160 to 32,684.

Pine District will gain 3,124 residents, rising from 29,374 to 32,498.

Palo Verde District will welcome 2,363 new members, increasing from 28,999 to 31,362.

Ironwood District will grow by 2,085 from 28,789 to 30,874.

Acacia District will increase by 1,852 from 28,919 to 30,771. Willow will decrease by 948 from 33,744 to 32,796.

The final vote comes after a fourmonth process. Resolution 2021-85 was adopted on Aug. 17, to establish

the legal criteria by which a new map was to be selected.

The Redistricting Committee created a website, held 10 open houses, and used social media to inform the public. Map proposals and public opinions were accepted up until Oct. 31. Thirty-eight maps were submitted.

Of the 38, 15 were thrown out due to unacceptable population deviation, according to the city.

The remaining 23 were evaluated and narrowed down to seven, which was narrowed further to the five finalists presented to the city council. Six plans were cut due to concerns over contiguousness. One plan involved removing an incumbent from a district.

Nine plans contained multiple age-restricted master-planned communities within the same district.

The district lines of the city were originally set in 1990, which was based on 1985 census data. Lines were re-evaluated after the censuses in 1990, 1995, 2000, 2010 and 2015. PT

‘Charlie Brown Christmas’ was a TV miracle

It’s happened again, and it’s not too farfetched to call it a “Christmas miracle.”

For the 56th consecutive year, “A Charlie Brown Christmas” appeared on national television. In 2021, just as in 2020, the Public Broadcasting Service telecast the celebrated animated special without commercial interruption.

A major commercial disruption of this holiday tradition appeared imminent in October of last year. AppleTV+ acquired the exclusive rights to all media related to “Peanuts,” the comic strip that introduced Charlie Brown and company to America. Despite a pledge by AppleTV+ to make “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and two other animated

specials available “free” for viewers on the platform over a three-day period, a clamor arose in the Heartland.

Well over a quarter million people signed an online petition protesting Apple’s decision, claiming that it left “us devoted fans who have grown up with Charlie Brown and the ‘Peanuts’ gang in the dark, unable to watch.”The criticism prompted Apple – beware the mixed fruit metaphor – to take lemons and make lemonade. That’s when the tech giant struck the deal with PBS to air the show over traditional “free TV.” Questions and varying degrees of controversy have surrounded “A Charlie Brown Christmas” since it was literally on the drawing board. “Peanuts” Creator Charles M. Schulz teamed with producer Lee Mendelson and director Bill Melendez to take his characters from the newspaper comics section into prime-time TV. By the production stan-

dards for animation in the mid-1960s, this presentation was…well, different.

Not only did it look different, with limited animated movement among the characters; it sounded different. No laugh track. A soundtrack that primarily featured the jazz piano of Vince Guaraldi, with a little Beethoven and a couple of Christmas Carols added for good measure. And the voices of the characters weren’t adults trying to sound like kids; they were children.

But the biggest difference was found in the story that Schulz devised. It did not revolve around Santa or Frosty or Rudolph; this was a Christmas story that dealt with the “reason for the season.” Charlie Brown bemoans the commercialization of the holiday; depressed and exasperated, he shouts the question, “Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?”

Linus answers him, effectively and

movingly, by reciting from the Gospel of Luke: “For unto you is born this day in the City of David, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.”

“That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown,” he concludes.

A historical observer might conclude that this all came together seamlessly in the year 1965; that the tenor of the times was favorably disposed toward religious expression, and that the creative team was of one accord.

That wasn’t the case.

As Schulz outlined the story, Bill Melendez objected.

“You can’t put the Bible on television,” the director exclaimed.

At the risk of being politically incorrect in the extreme, there’s an old English insult known as “the Chinese curse” – though apparently no one can actually track it back to originating in China. Anyway, the idea is, the most pleasant times in life are often dull and free of drama. So the curse goes, “May you live in interesting times.”

That we live in times more interesting than any in the last 2,000 years was driven home for me the other night when I had post-golf beers with a few friends and our gathering degenerated into hard feelings over one fellow wish-

ing another who was about to depart, “Happy holidays.”

The guy being wished well stopped a step from the table. He made a facial expression like something was putrid.

“You mean Christmas?” He gave out a theatrical snort. “If that’s what you mean, why not say it? Merry %$*ing Christmas.”

The well-wisher looked one part astonished and one part homicidal.

“You’re kidding me, right? You’re bent out of shape because I wished you happy holidays?”

What became apparent from the beery argument that ensued is that – as with everything else in our culture today – Americans appear to be entrenched in several camps over the subject of season’s greetings.

Towards the more “woke” end of the political spectrum, it’s deemed appropriate to make every effort to be inclusive.

Thus, phrases like “Merry Christmas” and “Happy Hanukkah” are considered offensive, on the off-chance the person being spoken to does not celebrate the holiday in question.

Among many conservatives, meanwhile, it appears that sayings like “Merry Christmas” are a badge of honor – sort of like a “Let’s Go Brandon” for the holidays. Despite the fact that some people may be offended when you say it, you say it anyway, and you do so proudly, because saying things that offend some people apparently brands you as a member of the cool kids’ club.

Then there’s the third group of people, to which I belong. My guess is, this

group comprises approximately nine out of 10 Americans with an IQ above, say, room temperature – at the North Pole. In an igloo. In mid-winter.

Members of this group don’t take pride in actively offending people, nor are we offended when people make a sincere effort to wish us a “Merry Christmas” or any other sort of good day. If the holiday in question happens to be one we don’t celebrate, we give the person credit for trying and we say something clever in response. Like, “Thanks! You too!”

We handle situations like this in stride because we prefer not to spend our time on Earth policing holiday greetings, or arguing over minutiae. Not that we’re SEE CHEER PAGE 11

Market update: Seasonal slowdown nowhere to be found

Typically, the local market experiences a slowdown in the fall that continues through late winter. As you may have noticed, nothing about this year’s market has been typical.

The average number of days a listing spent on the market in Maricopa County increased from 29.6 days in October to 31.5 days in November.

According to The Cromford Report, 46% of sales closed in Maricopa County during November sold for over the listing price, down from 47.7% of October sales, while the closing price per square foot increased from $272.91 in October to $274.62 in November.

In November, 388 MLS listing sales closed in Glendale, and 330 in Peoria.

Today, there are 191 active and available listings — not counting properties already under contract or pending close of escrow — in MLS in Glendale and 198 in Peoria. That is 49.2% of one month’s inventory in Glendale, down from 53.82% last month, and 60% of one month’s inventory in Peoria, up from 58%.

Maricopa County inventory is 64.9% of November’s closed sales, down from 79.8% this time last month.

According to ShowingTime, the platform Realtors use to schedule most of the MLS showings, Peoria listings in the $200,000 to $399,999 range had an average of 14.70 showings per listing, up from 11.63 in October.

Glendale homes in the $200,000 to $399,999 range saw a slight decrease in the average number of showings per listing from 12.85 to 12.50. Not all showings are scheduled through ShowingTime, so actual numbers are typically higher.

According to Freddie Mac, as of Dec. 16, National Mortgage Rates reported U.S. weekly averages of 3.12% for a 30-year fixed, 2.34% for a 15-year fixed, and 2.45% for a five-year ARM. According to MLS statistics, 76% of Maricopa County buyers financed their home purchase in November, while the rest paid cash. Buyers using a conventional mortgage to buy a three-bedroom detached house with two bathrooms paid a minimum of $210,000 in Maricopa County, $270,000 in Glendale, and $335,000 in Peoria. Conventional financing made up 74.3% of November financed sales.

ria FHA buyers paid a minimum of $290,000, and Glendale FHA buyers paid $310,000.

FHA buyers made up 9% of financed purchases in November. Maricopa County VA buyers making a similar purchase paid a minimum of $256,000, paid in Peoria, while Glendale VA buyers paid a minimum of $356,000. Home sales financed with VA loans made up only 5.8% of November financed sales.

The remaining financed transactions used other financing methods. For the week ending Nov. 28, 4% of Maricopa County sellers contributed to their buyer’s closing costs, up 1% from Oct. 31.

At the other end of the market, the highest-priced home sale in Maricopa County last month sold in Paradise

Valley for $14 million. In November, Peoria’s highest-priced home sale sold for $2.372 million, and the highest-priced November sale in Glendale sold for $1.178 million.

Patriot All-America tourney now to include women

The Patriot All-America golf tournament has opened its field to women for the first time in its 11 years.

Held at the Wigwam Golf Club starting Tuesday, Dec. 28, this year’s iteration will show top men’s and women’s amateur golfers from around the nation.

“We’re excited about that start from the women,” said Dustin Roberts, a representative for the Golf Coaches Association of America. “If you’re someone who loves golf, it’s a great chance to go out and see them. Folks are going to be watching them on the weekends on the PGA Tour and the LPGA.” The tournament has produced many PGA tour winners over its 11 years, including Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas when the field was limited to just men.

The tournament was the idea of the Arizona Golf Association and the Golf Coaches of America, in conjunction with The Wigwam and the Biltmore golf courses.

The tournament is held at The Wigwam in Litchfield Park.

This year, fans may see the next Lexi Thompson or Lydia Ko. “We are really fortunate to have some really, really good ladies players in the bill this year,” Robert said.

“A couple of the highlights are Julia Johnson, who plays at Ole Miss, who is the defending national champion on the women’s side. You have Louise Duncan, who actually goes to Stirling University in Scotland.”

Aside from Duncan and Johnson, the women’s field is set to include multiple players inside the top 100 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, as well as many collegiate All-Americans.

Players include University of Oregon’s Cynthia Lu and Michigan State University’s Valery Plata.

The Patriot All-America tournament is a golf tournament, turned public event, mimicking the Waste Management Phoenix Open, “Greatest Show on Grass.”

The tournament was the idea of the Arizona Golf Association and the Golf Coaches of America, in conjunction with The Wigwam and the Biltmore golf courses and has flourished.

“There were conversations about a ‘bowl-like’ event for college golf,” said Sean Scibienski, a representative for the West Valley Mavericks, which sponsors the event.

“The original concept was, ‘How do we get the top amateur golfers in the world to come to an event and really have the atmosphere that they would if they were a football program playing in a bowl game?’”

The “bowl game” experience has grown. Starting as a 10-foot-by-10foot tent at a golf course bringing in about 50 people, the tourney attracts more than 1,000 fans to experience golf, food, beverage, live music and SEE PATRIOT PAGE 15

fundraising during the week.

“It’s great, great golf, an incredible party, all for a great cause of supporting the military,” Scibienski said.

The tournament is more than a golfing event or a public spectacle. The Patriot All-America honors those who have served or died for the U.S. military and armed forces.

They work with the Folds of Honor, founded by Lt. Col. Dan Rooney. The organization provides scholarships to families of fallen and disabled service members.

The Patriot All-America brings former soldiers to the greens as well, as the tournament selects players from the Veterans Golf Association to play alongside the amateurs.

“We offer an exemption into the field for their national champion,” Scibienski said. “They have a series of tournaments to qualify for a national championship tournament. And the winner of that event, the winners on the men and the women’s field of the open event, which is the more competitive version, get an exemption into our field.”

It goes a step further than that. Golfers carry a custom-made golf bag with severely injured or fallen soldiers’ names and bios on them.

After golfers finish their rounds, the bags are autographed by amateur golfers and auctioned. The profits go to Folds of Honor.

“What we like to say is, ‘That golfer is taking that soldier on his final tour of duty,’” Scibienski said.

Last year, the festivities were halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was successfully livestreamed, and that will continue this year. The Patriot All-America will be featured on ESPN, the Golf Channel and Golfweek, among others.

“We are going to continue the livestream, because there is a lot of parents and fans that can’t travel to Arizona at that time of year, no matter how much they’d like to,” Scibienski said. “We’d like to give them an opportunity to see their kids and see the events.”

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF Adelante Healthcare is urging Arizonans not to wait until the new year to make doctor’s appointments and to get screened for various diseases.

There are 12 screenings that adults should be made aware of, some of which are overlooked.

“Early prevention and detection can save lives,” said Pedro Cons, chief executive officer of Adelante Healthcare.

“In 2021 alone, our providers screened 12,567 patients for cervical cancer and 5,478 for colorectal cancer. Studies have found that there’s a much greater survival rate for patients when cancer is caught early.”

Adelante Healthcare has nine locations throughout the state, including Buckeye, Goodyear and Peoria.

Each facility is multilingual, accepts AHCCCS and has certified application advisers to help patients obtain low-cost health insurance to meet their budget and personal needs. Nobody is turned away for financial or insurance reasons.

In the spirit of Christmas, here are 12 essential screenings.

Blood pressure screening: Adults over the age of 18 should have their blood pressure checked every two to five years, in most cases. However, those older than 40 should have annual blood pressure screenings.

Untreated blood pressure issues can lead to stroke, heart disease, heart attack and kidney failure.

Cholesterol screening: Children and adolescents should have their cholesterol checked at least once between ages 9 and 11 and again between ages 17 and 21.

Healthy adults should have their cholesterol tested every four years, and more often over the age of 40. High cholesterol may have no symptoms but can cause a heart attack or stroke.

Diabetes screening: Experts recommend adults who are overweight and between the ages of 35 and 70 be screened for Type 2 diabetes. It’s estimated that 1 in 3 Americans have prediabetes, which can eventually cause kidney damage, often leading to dialysis, eye damage, or an increased risk for heart disease or stroke if left untreated.

Dental exam bi-annually: Everyone should visit a dentist for a routine dental exam, oral cancer screening and cleaning every six months, including children beginning at 1 year of age. Gum disease can lead to loss of teeth and a multitude of health complications, including diabetes,

heart disease and stroke. And unfilled cavities can cause extreme pain, infection and tooth loss.

Immunizations (including flu shot and COVID-19 vaccination): Doctors recommend everyone 6 months old and older receive an annual flu shot. Likewise, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is urging all people over 5 years old to get vaccinated against COVID-19. A recent study shows that unvaccinated people are 20 times more likely to experience COVID-19-associated death, versus fully vaccinated people.

Infectious disease screening: There are multiple sexually transmitted diseases that adults should be screened for, including chlamydia, HIV, gonorrhea and syphilis, to name a few. Sexually active adults are SEE SCREENINGS PAGE 18

Kasai’s ‘dinnertainment’ coming to Park West in 2022

Kasai Japanese Steakhouse is bringing the heat — literally — to Park West.

Known for bright flames outside of its Scottsdale location, the teppanyaki restaurant will move into the Peoria shopping center in late summer, early fall.

“I’m trying to do the four corners of the Valley, with Phoenix in the middle,” said Mike Russello, owner.

“Park West is a nice spot, and it had good parking for us. It’s important to have good parking because the teppanyaki tables tend to have big parties.”

Russello said he will have possession of the building in January; however, it’s “just a gray shell.”

“We’re going to have the flames on the outside, as long as Peoria approves it,” he said. “The landlords approved it. We’re planning on the bowl with the flames in the back and front, at the two entrances.”

“We have the first hoodless teppanyaki tables in the Valley. We made some other minor changes in Scottsdale. We’ve been killing it since. We have 460 reservations tonight.”

Russello found Peoria appealing because of its proximity to State Farm Stadium, which will host the 2023 Super Bowl.

“Having one in Scottsdale and one in Peoria will be perfect,” he said. “I just love

what’s going on in Peoria. If you ask me, Peoria is trying to be like a Scottsdale.

There’s so much development going on.

“We’re a destination restaurant. In Scottsdale, people drive from that part of the Valley all the time. We’re also going for Chandler and Gilbert. Phoenix doesn’t have a teppanyaki table. We’re shooting for the Biltmore or Arcadia. We want four or five of them.”

Russello dubs his restaurant “dinnertainment,” and his staff keeps guests engaged.

“They’re not sitting on their phones,” he said. “There’s the fire. The chefs are having fun with them. It’s a dinner show and they have a great time. It’s high energy, and we play fun music. People yell at the tables.

They’re just having fun.”

Restaurants are nothing new to Russello. He also owns the ice cream shop The Creek Cookies and Cream at The Shops at Dynamite Creek in Cave Creek.

“We have raspberry Dole Whip there,” he said last year. “But my focus is on Kasai, and we want to grow the concept in the area.” PT

“The sequel, ‘American Underdog: Electric Boogaloo,’ is going to just blow people’s minds,” Levi said with a laugh, referring to the 1984 breakdancing movie.

Annual physicals for the whole family: Once a year, everyone, including babies, toddlers, children, teens and adults should get a well check. Doctors will inspect hearts, breathing, height, weight, ears, blood pressure and more during these visits. Adults will also have routine blood

work drawn to check for cholesterol, electrolyte levels, hydration status, liver function, kidney function and blood cell values.

Adolescent care visits should be scheduled for newborn babies through 15 months old and well checks for children and adolescents up to 21 years of age.

“You may not be able to put a bow on it, but there is no better gift than the gift of good health and longevity,” Cons said.

A Christmas Story: What God reveals to us CHURCH-COMMUNITY CONNECTION

Let me introduce you to a friend of mine, Dr. Ted Baehr.

He is the publisher and editor-in-chief of Movieguide and a respected movie critic. Dr. Baehr comes from a Hollywood family. Both his father and his grandfather starred in major movies and television series.

Last November, I heard Dr. Baehr speak about the elements required in every great movie or book. Here’s a summary of some of what he shared with the audience. Read on. You will

like this.

First, you need a premise. The premise is the idea behind the movie or book. The premise is, “Where you’re going and why you’re going there. You give a premise and then fulfill the premise.” Then you need a plot. The plot is, “How you’re going to get there.” The plot is the vehicle to communicate the idea or premise. And the process of arriving at the premises should be painful or challenging.

The plot consists of characters, dialogue, themes, and the setting or backdrop of the movie or book. Characters are, “Who goes there and whom they meet.” Themes are the interactions between characters along the way that meet. The setting is where the plot

happens and includes both music and spectacle. And a good movie, a story or a book always has a starting point and an ending point.

Being a writer of sorts, I thought about Dr. Baehr’s speech. And by the time you read this article, it will be Christmas Eve. So, let’s apply those elements to the first Christmas.

Talk about intrigue. The first Christmas was full of possibilities for a fulllength drama. The first Christmas was the stuff that movie directors and producers scan the horizon for. Only this time, there was no fantasy but plenty of spectacles. It was for real, for all people, for all time. This time, the author, director and producer is God, the Great I Am, The Lord of all creation.

Consider the setting and backdrop.

The times were tough. The dark night and straggling confusion added to the drama. The oppressive Roman government decreed that everyone in Israel return home to their birth cities for tax registration. Most likely, that would mean higher taxes. So, the roads were filled with people going to and from their birth cities. There was bedlam in Bethlehem. And there was no room in Bethlehem’s numerous inns.

ery little boy in the Bethlehem area, 2 years old and under. The conclusion of the first Christmas was when the angel appeared again to Joseph and announced that Herod was dead and for him to re-enter Israel.

That was a fantastic event. It has all the elements that Dr. Baehr mentioned.

But what is the premise behind the first Christmas? What is God trying to reveal to us? Biblically, I think there are three crucial things in the first Christmas.

First, God reveals to us; sin separates us from God and each other. Sin is just missing God’s best for us. When our desires lead us, we don’t make things better; we make them worse. And we get stuck, “…in sin and error pining.”

God doesn’t want us separated from Him or each other.

Second, God reveals to us, “Here is what you look like, what you do, without Me.” You become a type of Herod.

Herods love being in control. Herods will do anything to be in control, even killing young children or anything that has to do with God. Last and most important, God says, “We don’t have to be separated. I became flesh so that you know what I’m like. Christ is the way for you to rejoin Me.” There is a way back to God, and that is through God Himself. You don’t have to be a frightened Herod.

So, there you go, why not have your first Christmas this Christmas by receiving Christ into your heart? God just came near to you. PT

and her betrothed who had never had sex were journeying to his birthplace called Bethlehem. There would be consequences of the worst sort from Rome if they didn’t. To top it all off, she was getting ready to deliver the child, and the donkey on which she rode didn’t come with shock absorbers. When they finally arrived, the expectant mother was in labor, and the only place in Bethlehem for them to stay was in a stable.

Now the stage was set, the starting point was established, the angels’ spectacle was over the top, and the music concert, although numerically small, was heavenly. Amid this drama, the main character Jesus was born. Now all is calm, and all is bright. There was a pause for us to catch our breath. But unthinkable events and characters were on their way.

Enter the good guys (Magi from the east) and the villain (Herod). You know the story. Kings from the east came to Jerusalem, led by a star so evident that you couldn’t miss it. They asked, “Where is the King of the Jews, that we may worship him?” King Herod and all of Jerusalem panicked. What does this mean? At Herod’s request, the Jewish chief priests looked at Scripture prophecy and determined the birthplace of Christ was Bethlehem. Herod sent the Magi to Bethlehem and asked them to inform him when they found Jesus so He could also worship. Sure enough, the star reappeared and led them to the Christ-child. They gave him gifts fit for a king. After that, the Magi were warned not to report back to Herod in a dream.

Then God’s angel appears to Joseph and says, “Get up. Take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt. Stay until further notice. Herod is on the hunt for this child and wants to kill him.” So Joseph did as he was told.

When he realized that the Magi had not reported to him, Herod flew into a rage. He ordered the murder of ev-

Local college radiologic technology grads honored

Central Arizona College recognized radiologic technology students during a pinning ceremony at its Superstition Mountain Campus in Apache Junction on Dec. 11.

This special ceremony signifies the completion of an associate of applied science degree in radiologic technology.

Students included Phillip Horton of Peoria and Loretta McCabe of Cave Creek.

Radiographers are critical members of a health care team that are called upon to render compassionate patient care, ensure safe radiation protection practices and apply technical knowledge in the operation of specialized imaging equip-

ment used to generate diagnostic images.

CAC’s associate of applied science degree in radiologic technology is a twoyear (six sequential trimesters including summers) program that prepares students for entry-level positions as radiographers.

The curriculum is designed in accordance with the Radiography Curriculum established by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists.

Academic courses include radiographic positioning, radiation physics, principles of radiographic exposure, and other specialized topics. The program is designed around a model of classroom and laboratory instruction integrated with hands-on experience in a clinical setting that provides a thorough educational

foundation and professional preparation to enter the workforce as an independent practitioner upon graduation.

Following their degree completion, students are eligible to sit for the Amer-

ican Registry of Radiologic Technologists examination and they may apply for an Arizona license to practice radiography as a certified radiologic technologist. PT
