Family and friends of 5-year-old Austin Rawlings gathered to celebrate her life Friday, Dec. 6.

Her body was recovered Nov. 30 from Tonto Creek after the vehicle she and other family members were in was submerged in water. The body of her 5-year-old cousin, Colby Rawlings, was also recovered. The search continues for Colby’s sister, 6-yearold Willa Rawlings.

Austin’s memorial was held at Christ’s Church of the Valley in her hometown of Peoria.

The parking lot of the church was filled

with dozens of cars and the event was attended by children and adults. The mood of the guests varied with people fighting to hold back tears and others remaining cheerful in memory of Austin.

An online posting about the memorial at gofundme raised more than $50,000 for the family.

“Our Austin was an expressive girl who loved music and color. We ask those attending the service to please dress colorfully and bring your smiles,” said Austin’s mother, Lauren Rawlings, in a post.

Indeed, many at the memorial wore bright shirts and dresses.

Old Town Holiday festival blends old and new traditions

Traditional and more modern activities can both help to shape holiday memories. This year, the Old Town Holiday Festival will offer a range of activities for people of different ages and interests.

In its 32nd year, the festival will take place in Old Town Peoria from 5 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14.

This year, the holiday festival has grown with the inclusion of Second Saturdays, which is regularly held every second Saturday of the month from October through May. The two events coming together means there will be more live music and arts activities for attendees.

Marylou Stephens, arts and events manager for the city of Peoria, says Second Saturdays is helping to bring a whole new vibe to the area and will add an extra element to the holiday festival.

“We are melding the history and tradition of the Old-Time Holiday Festival, wonderfully steeped history of 32 years, with the new and exciting vibe

of Second Saturdays,” Stephens said.

The festival will have three stages of live entertainment, a Christmas tree lighting at Johnny E. Osuna Memorial Park at 7:15 p.m., inflatables and craft activities for kids, strolling high school choirs, pictures with Santa, a vendor market, a gingerbread house display, food trucks and a pop-up restaurant.

“You can certainly come to the festival to get into the holiday spirit, but if that’s not your thing, you can be on the

other end, hearing great acoustic guitar playing,” Stephens said.

The stages will offer something different.

One will be focused on holiday music and dance troupes; another, on acoustic music and the other, on local bands.

Stephens says the expansion of the festival allows for a greater spotlight on local musicians, dance groups and bands. “I think we have some pretty incredible talent locally. They are getting all kinds of opportunities in Phoenix and the East Valley, and we need to start giving them opportunities over

here,” Stephens said.

Many of the bands taking part in the December event have done Second Saturdays before.

The vendor area has grown to around 100 vendors, many of which sell oneof-a-kind arts and crafts items such as hand-knitted scarves. A number of vendors will have specialty holiday items such as Christmas ornaments. In recent years, more have begun to sell fandom items for sci-fi, fantasy and comic book fans.

Along with food trucks serving different types of cuisine, the festival will offer a chef-driven pop-up restaurant with a Caribbean-themed menu from Chef Nigel Salandy. There will be menus for both children and adults.

The adult menu includes an appetizer, main course and dessert.

For the second year, the festival will have lighted elements in Johnny E. Osuna Memorial Park. Last year, the

lighted decorations were popular for family photos.

For the gingerbread competition, individuals and groups created elaborate gingerbread houses for the chance to win special first, second or third place awards in different categories.

The top large and mini houses will receive grand prizes.

The gingerbread houses will be judged on Dec. 12 and will be on display at the Peoria Community Center through Dec. 27.

During the festival, attendees will have a chance to celebrate the holidays in an area filled with history.

In Old Town Peoria, many of the buildings have long histories and have been used for different purposes over the years. Visitors will have a chance to see and go inside some of these buildings.

A number of local businesses, including Iron Key Studio and the Grand Project Shoppe, will offer different art activities during the December festival.

Iron Key Studio will have live painting, temporary tattoo for kids and a community splatter painting activity during the festival.

The gallery will also host a reception for its new portraits and landscapes-focused exhibition, which will have a combination of emerging and resident artists. A tattoo parlor and co-op art gallery with artist studios, Iron Key just opened last November.

The artists who work out of the studios have at least 15 years of experience and work in different mediums.

Being part of the festival and keeping a community-centered focus is important for local business owners such as Iron Key co-owner Melissa Zimmer.

Zimmer said she and her husband want to help continue the traditions started by the merchants who first organized the holiday festival. His family moved to the area in the 1800s and owned blacksmith and hardware shops SEE FESTIVAL PAGE 8

islation to give those who were sexually assaulted or abused as children more time to sue. Previously, victims were required to sue before their 20th birthday or forfeit their legal rights.

Now they will have until age 30.

Boyer wanted to give victims even more time and will try again next year.

Although he had success in both, he said he has plenty of work to do on what he views as ongoing battles.

Last week at his Glendale coffee spot, Boyer was reviewing two reports. One was the Nov. 22 report of the Justice for Victims of Child Abuse Task Force, which Boyer co-chairs. The other report contained recommendations from a Dec. 5 ad hoc committee on “Minimizing Exposure and Contaminant Risks for First Responders.”

Boyer was asked why these two issues are his priorities.

“I was raised blue-collar,” he said.

“I have massive respect for public servants.

“What inspired me to (sponsor) the firefighter cancer legislation is firefighters, especially with their awareness these days cancer is their number one killer, are willing to give their lives protecting the rest of us,” Boyer said.

“Anyone who is willing to run into a fire for perfect strangers or is willing to take a bullet for the same public deserves to be honored not just when they die but to be protected and supported while they’re alive.

Boyer said he is outraged by cases like Glendale Fire Capt. Kevin Thompson, who had to battle for cancer treatment coverage from the city and the late Austin Peck, a Goodyear firefighter who had his workers compensation denied.

“It’s a travesty,” Boyer said.

Boyer said denial of a causal relation between firefighters who get cancer and their jobs is similar to the tobacco industry’s decades-long denial smoking was related to lung cancer. “It’s the same playbook,” Boyer said.

Boyer splits his days between pushing for the likes of firefighter protection in the senate and teaching eleventh-graders literature at North Phoenix Preparatory Academy.

Boyer said teaching high school students increased his concern over the mistreatment of youth. “I am pushing for stricter guidelines on how teachers should communicate with students including no private messaging and more funding so the Arizona Department of Education can hire more investigators who look into allegations of unprofessional or immoral behavior by teachers,” he said.

Boyer started thinking intensely about child abuse survivors after watching the Larry Nassar trial last year, the former athletic trainer is convicted of molesting many young athletes. “It got me wondering about Arizona’s statute of limitations for adult survivors of sexual assault,” Boyer said.

“I looked into it and realized we had the worst in the nation at two years from the age of 18 where a survivor could come forward - until the age of 20 to file a civil claim. Even worse, Arizona never had a separate statute for survivors of sexual assault, instead, child sexual assault previously fell under the personal injury statute.

“This means, Arizona used to consider a sexual assault victim in the law the same as a guy who slips on a banana peel at the mall.”

It changed when Gov. Doug Ducey recently signed Boyer-sponsored leg-

His parents live in Glendale. Boyer’s father-inlaw, Jamie Nowatzki, recently retired after 35 years with the Glendale Police Department. Jamie Nowatzki’s son Ty Nowatzki is a Glendale Police officer who was recently honored for his life-saving efforts during an apartment fire.

Since he was a boy living near the Phoenix-Glendale border, Boyer witnessed Glendale and Peoria’s massive growth.

Boyer stressed that issues like firefighter safety and helping victims of child abuse will help those beyond the area of his district.

After representing District 20 in the Arizona House of Representatives for six years, Boyer was elected to the Arizona State Senate, beginning a twoyear term in January.

He has filed to run for re-election next year, yet claims politics is not his life.

“If I don’t get re-elected, I’ll just go back to teaching full time,” said a smiling Boyer.

For at least the next year, Boyer will attempt to put the Socratic method trying to sway fellow senators to his points of view.

Boyer said his priorities for 202 are increasing funding for firefighters, getting more funding for dyslexia screening and teaching methods and increasing funding for Department of Education investigators.

Boyer said more than 100 cases of staff and teacher misconduct is being handled by four investigators.

“We need 20 to 30 investigators,” he said.

All of the above ideas involve funding, millions of dollars.

“The money is there,” Boyer said, stressing it is a matter of prioritizing.

As Socrates said, according to Plato, “I tell you virtue does not come from money, but from virtue comes money and all other good things to man, both the individual and to the state.”

Boyer leads push for child sex abuse reform

A special committee on child sex abuse wants lawmakers to make it easier to prosecute some people who could be considered close to the victim.

But members of the Justice for Victims of Child Sex Abuse Task Force stopped short of recommending those who were victims of child sex abuse get more time to sue their assailants.

In a report issued Friday, the committee concluded the definition of who is in a “position of trust’’ is too narrow.

This definition can be important in cases when the victim was 15 through 17 years of age. If the alleged assailant was in a position of trust, then prosecutors need not prove the victim did not consent.

Right now the list ranges from parents, teachers, coaches, clergymen to those who are in a relationship with the minor’s parent.

The proposal would expand the list to any relatives by blood or marriage to the third degree, with the exception of siblings.

Also added would-be employers and bosses, adults living in the same house and any person at least 10 years older than the minor who has a relationship with the minor or the minor’s family.

It also would add all school employees to the list and not just teachers or educators. And youth pastors would joint clergy and priests as those in trust.

The decision by Gov. Doug Ducey to set up the task force and proposed recommendations came the same day he signed legislation to give those who were sexually assaulted or abused as children more time to sue, no matter how long ago the event occurred.

The new law scrapped existing statutes requiring victims to sue before their 20th birthday or forfeit their legal rights. Now they will have until age 30.

This is far less than originally sought

by State Republican Sen. Paul Boyer, D-20, who also was co-chair of the task force.

But it was the best deal he could get through the Legislature -- at that time.

The panel did conclude having a hard-and-fast cutoff at age 30 “is nos sufficient.’’

But committee members did not recommend expanding the ability to sue, concluding they did not have enough time or information to pursue the mat-

ter and file the report by the Dec. 1 deadline.

But Boyer said, as far as he’s concerned, the issue is not dead. The senator said he will try to get colleagues to revisit the issue when the Legislature reconvenes in January.

He cited testimony to the task force

by Joelle Casteix, a survivor of childhood sexual assault by a staffer at a Catholic school, now a member of the Zero Abuse Project.

Boyer said he asked her at what age victims should know they have been sexually abused as children, thinking she would suggest raising the age to 55.

“She said, ‘I don’t think there should be a statute of limitations at all,’’ he recalled.

Boyer also said there was testimony from a pediatric psychologist. “He mentioned the reasons why it takes so long,’’ the senator said, given the nature of the physical and emotional trauma occuring to children, particularly when they are victimized by those in positions of trust.

“He gave us the reasons for why it takes decades for victims to come forward.’’

There may be some tools to help with this quest.

One of the elements of the legislation approved earlier this year opened up a temporary legal “window’’ for lawsuit by those whose time to file suit already had expired. They will have until the end of 2020 to bring their claims, no matter how many years ago the incidents occurred.

The task force is recommending courts monitor those cases, using what it learns to analyze the evidence about delayed disclosure to make recommendations for what would be an appropriate age for a statute of limitations.

Boyer said could help convince legislators to revisit the issue and set the age higher than 30.

One recommendation of particular concern to Boyer deals with how teachers communicate with students.

“I don’t believe any teacher should be on social media with their students,’’ he said. “I think there are official means or methods of communicating with their students that doesn’t involve one-onone direct messaging.’’

The task force is recommending the state Board of Education come up with some guidelines on not just social media but also cell phone use between

students and teachers.

Another recommendation also seeks to expand the power of the state board to review the conduct of uncertified educators who are in the classroom.

Right now, the report says, the board has oversight of only certified teachers with the power to revoke their credentials.

But the report ignores the fact there are 6,000 people in classrooms in public and charter schools who are not certified and not subject to having their ability to teach rescinded by the board.

Along the same lines, task force members point out the investigative unit at the state Department of Education consists of one chief, four investigators and one administrative assistant.

What it means, the report said, is each investigator currently has a caseload of between 120 and 150 cases; the education department says 50 is the “appropriate and manageable amount.’’

The report also includes a proposal to place special conditions on those convicted of sex trafficking crimes when they are placed on probation.

That, task force members said, could include curfews, staying away from school grounds unless registered as a student there, not going to a hotel without prior written approval of a probation officer and successfully completed domestic violence counseling.

Some of what the committee is recommending, like the additional investigators for the Department of Education, will require cash.

For example, the task force said there should be grants available to counties to establish or expand their efforts to investigate “cold cases’’ of child sex abuse, whether or not there is DNA evidence.

It also seeks creation and funding for the Department of Public Safety to create a statewide database to track and update the status on confirmed sexual predators and sex traffickers.

Glendale, Peoria representatives show party split over impeachment

WASHINGTON – The House Judiciary Committee ended a daylong hearing into possible articles of impeachment Wednesday, Dec. 4, against President Donald Trump with bitter partisan sparring.

Representatives from Glendale and Peoria followed party lines on the divisive issue.

The eight-hour hearing included testimony from four constitutional scholars on whether they believe Trump’s actions warranted an impeachment under the Constitution.

Democrats repeatedly invoked the Constitution and set up softball questions for the panel of scholars, while Republicans challenged those same law professors and argued there was nothing in the Democratic charges rising to the level of an impeachable offense.

Arizona lawmakers on the panel followed suit, with Rep. Greg Stanton, D-Phoenix, invoking the historical importance of the moment and GOP Reps.

Andy Biggs of Gilbert and Debbie Lesko of Peoria criticizing the whole process.

Despite the partisan fireworks, Lesko said she does not believe the hearing changed any minds.

“If they’re trying to sway the public, I don’t think this particular witness group is going to do it because they’re talking about what happened back in the House of Commons, back in the 1800s,” Lesko said. “I don’t think most people are going to stay tuned in.”

“What I’m suggesting to you today is a reckless bias coming in here, not fact witnesses,” Biggs said to the witnesses, after reading out their past campaign donations and snippets of news stories in which they have been quoted about impeachment.”

But Stanton said the most important question for every member of the committee is whether “we are a nation of laws and not men.”

“The obstruction we’re looking at today is far worse than President Nixon’s behavior,” Stanton said. “Future generations will measure us, every single member of this committee by how we choose to answer that question. I hope we get it right.”

The hearing was the start of the second phase of the House impeachment inquiry which began more than two months ago when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Trump’s discussions with Ukrainian officials were a “betrayal of his oath of office, betrayal of national security and betrayal of the integrity of our elections.”

Her comments came after a whistleblower reported concerns about a July 25 call to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, in which Trump asked Zelensky to “do us a favor” and investigate the son of former Vice President Joe Biden, a possible 2020 presidential challenger. Critics said it amounted to Trump threatening to withhold military aid and a meeting with Zelensky in exchange for Ukrainian interference in a U.S. election.

The inquiry began with several weeks of closed-door hearings by the Intelligence, Foreign Affairs and Oversight committees, followed by another two weeks of public hearings before the Intelligence Committee.

The three committees on Tuesday approved a 300-page report in which they charged Trump with misconduct for seeking election interference from the Ukrainians, and obstruction of justice for refusing to cooperate with congressional investigators and for prohibiting aides from testifying.

The report was sent to the Judiciary Committee, which is charged with deciding whether to draw up articles of impeachment. State Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., and chairman of the Judiciary Committee left

little doubt Wednesday where he stands.

“Never before has a president engaged in a course of conduct that included all of the acts most concerned the Framers,” Nadler said in his opening statement.

The three scholars hand-picked by Democrats all agreed with Nadler Trump’s actions met the definition of what the framers had in mind when they wrote impeachment into the Constitution.

Michael Gerhardt, a professor of constitutional law at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, testified “boundaries will just evaporate” if Congress does not impeach Trump, as future presidents will take it as a green light to take similar actions.

“The president has committed several impeachable offenses, including bribery, abuse of power and soliciting of personal favor from a foreign leader to benefit himself personally, obstructing justice and obstructing Congress,” Gerhardt said.

But George Washington University Law Professor Jonathan Turley, the Republicans’ lone witness, said he does not believe the accusations leveled against Trump rise to the standard of impeachment.

“I believe this impeachment not only fails to satisfy the standard of past impeachments but would create a dangerous precedent for future impeachments,” said Turley, who made a point of saying he did not vote for Trump in 2016.

The testimony brought a sharp rebuke from Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., who accused the witnesses of simply “pandering to the cameras.”

“To in some way insinuate on a live-mic with a lot of people listening, the Founding Fathers would have found President Trump guilty, is just simply malpractice with these facts before us,” Collins said.

“That is simply just not right.”

In the most fiery moment, Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., called out Stanford Law School Professor Pamela Karlan, grilling her over donations to the campaigns of Democrats including Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, 2016 presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and former President Barack Obama.

Karlan said it’s her constitutional right to donate to whomever she wants.

When asked why she gave more to Clinton than current candidate Warren, Karlan drew applause from the audience when she said she has been giving more to charities recently “because of all of the poor people in the United States.”

Tips from Peoria Fire-Medical to stay safe during the holidays

The holidays, while a time for celebration, can be dangerous and produce safety concerns if not enjoyed intelligently.

Engineer Michael Selmer, the public information officer for Peoria Fire-Medical said there is no significant increase in the amount of calls the department receives for emergencies over Thanksgiving, Christmas and other holidays, but said each year staff has to spring into action.

Selmer said fires and related emergencies in November around the holidays are often the result of deep-frying turkeys.

While quick and seemingly-easy, the process can be dangerous if the turkey is not completely thawed and dry. The oil temperature needs to also be correct.

And, if a fire does occur, Selmer urged the use of lids to stamp out the flames, or better, a fire extinguisher, rather than water. “Make sure your extinguisher is dry.

If you’re trying to put a grease fire out with water, you’re going to just spread it more, so that’s a misconception people often have,� Selmer said.

During the upcoming event, Grand Project Shoppe will have an ornament-making activity, live painting, complimentary cocoa and apple cider and live music. The shop will also operate a booth inside the holiday market.

The storefront and gathering place offers unique items from artists and makers as well as a studio space for classes and a workshop for artists. The space opened at the end of the summer.

Tracey Bentley, co-owner of the space and an interior designer, said being part of a growing art scene appealed to her

He urged Peoria families celebrating Christmas or other winter holidays to also be careful with holiday lighting.

Safe ladder use, with another person available to balance if decorating high-up is key, he said. LED lights at all parts of the house are also safer than fluorescents.

It is also important to not leave lights – LED or otherwise – on all day and night. It drains power and can stress out the electrical system in the house, causing fires. And, Peoria residents should be careful about how they light their Christmas trees, if they have an actual tree in the house. “Once the needles start falling off at a more rapid rate, that means the tree is dying and drying out,� Selmer said.

Most importantly, Selmer said, if an emergency happens, call 911 and try to evacuate. Peoria seeks to reduce homeless population

people were second in the West Valley, behind the 194 unsheltered people counted in Glendale. Avondale was next with 35 unsheltered people, followed by Surprise with 33, Buckey with 24, Goodyear with 22 and Youngtown with 18 unsheltered people counted.

According to Hallet, part of the reason for the increase is more resources being provided for an accurate count.

“We had a substantial increase over the prior year,” Hallet said. “Last year, we only had two police officers who did the count. For the 2019 count, we had 8 teams of three working the whole geography of the city.

“Plus, the team of two from the police department went to the river bottoms and tough terrains.”

Hallet thinks the more people counting led to more homeless people counted.

“We provide water, mittens, gloves it’s first thing in the morning when we get out there, and it’s generally the cold time of year,” Hallet said.

He noted participation on the Point In Time count is required by HUD funding sources.

“It’s kind of a snapshot in time,” he said. “It doesn’t count for those who are in the system, like jail.”

Peoria’s increase follows a regional trend, according to the report provided by the County.

“From 2106 to 2019, unsheltered homelessness in the Maricopa County region increased by 94%,” the report stated. “In the Central subregion (Phoenix), the growth rate in unsheltered homelessness was 64%. In the East Valley, unsheltered homelessness increased by 167% and in the West Valley, it went up by 213%.”

The county-wide increase means multiple cities are facing similar problems.

“We have a bottleneck in the number of unsheltered increasing, and fewer emergency shelter beds,” Hallet said.

Chris Hallett, director of Peoria’s Neighborhood and Human Services Department, was not surprised when Peoria’s homeless number was shown to increase.

“I think it was spot on,” Hallett said.

Early in the morning of Jan. 21, volunteers went out to do their counts for 2019.

The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) recently released Peoria’s numbers.

According to the data, volunteers counted 78 unsheltered people in Peoria.

Peoria’s 2019 figure is double the 38 unsheltered people counted in 2018. In 2017, 22 unsheltered people were counted - slightly less than the 31 counted in 2016.

“We really think prior years were underreported,” he said.

Hallet noted that unsheltered people are not just counted, they are provided information on resources. Unfortunately, for those who need immediate housing, resources are scarce.

However, that may change this year.

“Since the shelters are all filled, we’re going to (city) council on Jan. 21 for a homeless update and strategy discussion,” Hallet said.

He said Peoria is nearing completion of a contract for seven emergency-bed reservations at Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS).

“We anticipated another uptick again this year,” Hallet said. “With 78 (unsheltered) people, the 7 beds won’t last very long,” he added.

The next Point In Time homeless count and survey is scheduled for Jan. 28.

“We offer services while we have them in front of us. Part of questions we like to ask over and above the Point In Time question is, ‘Are you needing services now, if so, what?’

You’ll be happier living your gifts, not your dreams

Most times when you go to a concert, it’s the music you remember. With that said, it’s been a month since I saw Post Malone play in Glendale and still find myself pondering his parting message to his fans.

I’ll have to paraphrase a bit since the hip-hop pop-rapper favors saltier language than my editors will allow.

The gist: “Do what you want! Don’t let anybody tell you can’t do $#*ing something or tell you what you can $#*ing be. Live your $#*ing dreams.”

Given that “Posty,” born Austin Richard Post, owns the top-ranked album of 2019 with “Hollywood’s Bleeding” and that his music has been streamed more than 6.5 billion times this year on Spotify, this philosophy appears to have worked out pretty well for him – at least to the ripe old age of 24.

But is it good advice?

That’s what I’ve wondered for weeks.

Have to say, I don’t think so – though the concept of living your dreams has launched a million selfhelp books and, more recently, a few zillion social media posts and hashtags.

All around us all the time you bump into people who describe their new job, new business or their kid’s next JV basketball game as the pursuit of destiny, a desire burning in them like a cauldron.

They’re “on their grind,” #hustling, forever busy “living the dream.”

So busy that they never appear to notice something else essential to success: Having talent and skill also plays a role in achieving your dreams, alongside passion and desire.

Maybe that sounds like a killjoy way of looking at things, but with all due respect to Post Malone, I don’t think telling a kid who can’t sing that he can be a rock star is doing him or her any favors.

Then again, people love Bob Dylan’s voice, so I suppose there’s always a chance, however infinitesimal it may be.

When I was a kid, my dream was to play NBA basketball like my idol, Julius “Doctor J” Erving.

I’d clear snow off the playground to shoot jump shots in winter and dribble and work on moves to the hoop for hours.

Somewhere around age 15, I realized that at a shade over 5-foot-10, my NBA prospects were limited.

A few years later, my parents, teachers and professors helped me understand that my gifts involved words and stories.

In this way, a journalist and communications consultant was born.

Point being, I was never going to fly to the rim like Julius or become a point

guard like Steve Nash. Would pushing me to try regardless have been doing me a favor? I think not.

Instead of living your dreams, I’d like to advocate for living your gifts.

Maybe your child has a unique ability to connect with people emotionally and empathize with their troubles.

Encourage them to become a doctor, a nurse, a therapist. Maybe you hate your retail job today, but you have a passion for tinkering and the ability to see how pieces and parts fit together.

Great.

Start that side business as a handyman or assembling Amazon orders.

Maybe you dream of seeing far off places. Learn to save money and then by all means go.

Of course, this sounds like much less fun than your average Post Malone lyric. Like this chorus from “I’m Gonna Be”: “So I’m gonna be what I want, what I want, what I want, yeah/I’m gonna do what I want, when I want, when I want, yeah.”

The dude brought 15,000 screaming fans to Glendale. Meanwhile, no one came out to see Post Leibo. So maybe my practical vision is all wrong. But I think not.

How one school went from a ‘D’ to a ‘B’ Discussion about education in Arizona often results in strongly stated opinions from widely varying perspectives. Although consensus seems lacking with regard to the path toward improvement, all parties seem to agree that public education needs improvement. Herein, Peoria’s oldest elementary school should become center to discussions.

After School enrichment clubs coordinated by already overworked classroom teachers offered creative, extended learning beyond the classroom. Kids show up in big numbers. Staff turnover, often seen as a negative, became a springboard for Lopresto. Her nod for young teachers toward basic techniques like breaking concepts into the smallest pieces for ease of understanding, and hands-on experimentation such as the campus Learning Gardens have teachers excited to teach and kids anxious to learn Communities have to care about their local schools. At a very basic level, good schools generally mean positive home values. Residents, businesses, and community groups answered this school’s call.

have responded with pizza, ice cream and cupcakes to celebrate mounting successes in classrooms throughout the school. The local library volunteer organization, as well as the Lion’s Club has spent more than a year noodling methods to encourage free-time reading among the Pirate student community.

President Kennedy once said, “A rising tide lifts all boats.” I firmly believe it.

The Peoria Elementary kids have a new bounce in their step. Teachers are wearing their pride, with a shadow of fatigue. The community around the school feels better about itself. A win is a win, and this win Lopresto can celebrate.

The work is not over, and I don’t see anyone on that campus shying away from the challenge ahead.

Asian seafood restaurant makes a splash in Peoria

Members of the Peoria Chamber of Commerce joined the staff of Kawaii Sushi and Asian Cuisine in Peoria on Dec. 4 to celebrate the restaurant’s first year of business with a ribbon-cutting.

The restaurant is own of three owned

by Kelly Lu, who opened the first Kawaii in Glendale nearly six years ago, offers an ever-changing menu of Japanese and Chinese cuisine, rotating specials to meet everybody’s needs by month.

Items such as the Peoria roll, which features salmon and fried tempura, or a variety of non-seafood options, allow visitors of all taste pallets to enjoy the cuisine of eastern Asia.

“The people in Peoria are so nice, I had to have one here,” Lu said.

With three restaurant locations open, including two in Glendale, Lu would consider expansion in the future. For now, though, said the focus of her and the staff is on continuing to prosper in the current spots they have.

“I opened two in one year, so I have been very busy. But it’s fun,” she said.

Woman inspires dog outreach by Papa John’s

In July, a New Jersey pizzeria went viral for inviting its surrounding community to leave “lost dog” flyers at their restaurant to attach to their pizza box lids.

For no charge, the pizzeria distributed the flyers with every pizza they delivered.

That act inspired southern Scottsdale resident Marika Meeks to reach out to Papa John’s.

Meeks thought, instead of slapping “lost dog” flyers onto pizza boxes, why not attach “home wanted” box-toppers

featuring an adoptable dog, encouraging residents to adopt?

“I couldn’t stop thinking about it and how we could use it to help rescue dogs get into homes. Then it hit me: We could feature local dogs in need of their own ‘furever’ home and I created a flyer and presented the idea,” Meeks said.

The idea appealed to Lance Stafko, Papa John’s franchise owner and operating partner of Round Rock AZ – which owns and manages franchise locations in Phoenix, Oklahoma City and Denver.

“The franchise owner of Papa John’s Pizza loves dogs and thought it was a great way to help,” Meeks said.

The holidays are upon us. That magical time of year when family, food, charity and goodwill change us as individuals and communities. That moment in time where an extra traffic light, or a long line, is just an opportunity to listen to Bing Crosby belt out the single best rendition of “White Christmas” ever recorded.

It’s also that time of year where home sellers face a quandary. Do I list my property now, or wait until the New Year?

The simple answer is wait.

The market historically softens around the holidays, there are fewer active buyers, and coordinating showings around travel, house guests, and holiday parties can add stress to an already stressful time.

Ahhh, but nothing in real estate is simple.

Some sellers don’t have the luxury of waiting for the predictable spring spike in activity. A change in job, relationship status, personal finance, or just a good old fashioned itch to start a new life can necessitate a move.

Often these sellers need to get the property on the market and sold as soon as possible. In a normal market cycle, this could pose a big problem. If a property is listed in December and doesn’t sell, the days on market could stigmatize the property and lead to a less desirable sales price.

But not to worry, this is no normal market cycle.

The economy is roaring. New jobs and new people are moving to the Valley at a

feverish pace. Interest rates are near historic lows. In spite of nearly a decade of year-over-year price increases, home affordability is still among the best in the country. Meanwhile, new home construction is simply not keeping pace with demand.

As such, home inventory is critically low and buyer demand is through the chimney.

If you’re a visual person check out a graphic from my friends at the Cromford Report. It’s showing that listings were down 21% last month and prices were up 8%. The trend will continue in December.

The bottom line is this: If you can wait until the spring, do it.

Your home value could move up another 3% by March so enjoy the presents and the egg nog and sell it when the credit card bill comes due.

However, If you need to sell your home now, don’t stress, put it on the market.

If the home is move-in ready and priced at market value, Santa will bring you a buyer by Christmas.

Meeks rescued Stella when she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer at the age of 41. A survivor, Meeks went on to launch Stella’s Instagram page in 2017 and now has more than 69,000

followers.

Meeks also created a nonprofit called Incredibull Stella, named after her pit bull, Stella.

The nonprofit is not only an advocate for pit bull breed awareness, but it also supports rescue and adoption shelters, promotes spay/neuter initiatives, and rescues and fosters puppies and adult dogs until a “forever family” can be found.

This isn’t the first time Papa John’s has supported Meeks and the Incredibull Stella nonprofit’s efforts.

On a Nov. 9 adoption event at Maricopa County Animal Care & Control, Papa John’s fed volunteers with donated pizzas.

In 2018 alone, Maricopa County Animal Care & Control brought in more than 26,000 dogs, of which 29 percent were returned to the owner, leaving more than 22,000 dogs in need of homes.

Liberty High wins thriller for first football state championship

The two mottos for Liberty High football’s senior class this season were “finish” and “leave no doubt.” As the Lions stormed onto the Sun Devil Stadium celebrating a 34-28 overtime victory over Red Mountain to capture the 6A state championship Friday night, they accomplished both.

The win gave Liberty High its first football state championship and a joyous ride home from Tempe to Peoria.

As it had been all season, the win did not come without some adversity, though. Of 14 games, the victory is one of seven won by just one point.

Red Mountain tied the game at 28 on a touchdown and two-point conversion with just seconds left to send the game to overtime after Liberty led virtually all game.

Liberty had already played in an overtime thriller just weeks before.

The Lions fell to rival Mountain Ridge on homecoming in double overtime on Oct. 4. They vowed they would not similar disappointment happen again.

“I told them one score, one-stop, game,” coach Mark Smith said.

Eagles basketball looking to soar this season

There is a lot to observe at an Ironwood High boys’ basketball practice, and some of the first takeaways have nothing to do with the X’s and O’s of the sport itself. There is a lot of noise, both coming from coaches trying to frazzle players while practicing free throws or the players themselves yelling defensive instructions and issuing challenges to teammates in drills.

There are also a lot of teaching moments. An argument between a guard and forward in a preseason training session about a missed pass turned into a long discussion between the team about how they can get better as a collective group. It’s just the type of leadership coach Jordan Augustine likes to see from his top players.

“I think it’s the most talented team from top to bottom. But, talent doesn’t matter if everyone’s not doing the right things. That’s the challenge, is starting from scratch with a group that isn’t actually starting from square one. They

have the history of being here before, being successful,” he said.

Besides the plethora of great skill, this year’s Eagles squad is one of the oldest Augustine has coached in his five seasons as head coach. Ironwood is senior and junior-heavy, with few underclassmen.

“There’s more maturity on the court.

Everybody knows what they’re supposed to do more, and then they can be in the right spots. We’re still learning because of the transfers and different guys in roles they weren’t in before, but having this experience is helpful,” senior guard Dominic Gonzalez said.

But not everybody is a returner. The Eagles were the beneficiaries of a few key transfers, many of whom add not just more ability and new faces of leadership, but also size. Even still, Ironwood is a bit smaller at some of the forward positions than many of their toughest 5A opponents. Thus, said it will have to rely on toughness and quality defensive positioning to keep others from scoring or dominating

them on the boards.

If the Eagles can keep up their fast style of play, using their conditioning and quickness to tire opponents out,

while still being fundamentally sound, there is no reason they cannot stack up wins in 2019-20.

“I saw in the summer and fall, we didn’t box out as well as we should have, a lot of staring, but if we focus on it more and then keep being able to push the pace I think we could do something special,” junior JJ White said.

In order to reach their goal of doing special something, the Eagles will have to fully recover from last season’s 6059 5A playoff quarterfinal loss to Millennium, which came on a controversial lane violation after a free throw in the dying seconds of the game.

Gonzalez said the memory is in the back of the players’ minds many days on the court, though less so now than in summer practices just mere months after last season. But, it serves as motivation, rather than something the Eagles are allowing to drag them down.

“I just know he had a lot of faith in me to put the ball in my hands down there. He dialed up the play and we ran it to perfection,” Guevara said.

The Lions missed the ensuing extra point, meaning a Red Mountain touchdown and successful PAT would clinch the game. The Liberty defense had other plans.

“We know we can stop anyone in the state if we play our game, and that was just our mindset,” said junior defensive back Shane Pitts.

His fellow back, junior Zay Johnson, picked a ball off in the end zone on Red Mountain’s possession to seal the game.

Liberty’s senior class of over 40 players is the largest the program has ever boasted. And, as the large group of players in black jerseys loaded the bus, there were still tears of joy flowed from many in recognition of their accomplishments.

“That’s something that we talked about from the very first day, the very first day of summer weight training,” Guevara said.

“When you’re little you just dream of being able to hold up that gold ball at the end of the season. And what better way to do it than your senior year?”

Tips for safe tree decorating

But others who are about to decorate can follow tips from the Red Cross on safe holiday decorating: Ten Holiday-Decorating Safety tips: 1. Use battery-operated candles. If you must use candles, never leave them unattended, keep them away from potentially flammable items, and place them out of reach from children and pets.

2. Check all holiday light cords to make sure they aren’t frayed or broken.

Don’t string too many strands of lights together — no more than three per extension cord.

3. When decorating outside, make sure decorations are for outdoor use and fasten lights securely to your home or trees. If using hooks or nails outside, make sure they are insulated to avoid

an electrocution or fire hazard.

4. If buying an artificial tree, look for the fire-resistant label. When putting it up, keep it away from fireplaces, radiators and other sources of heat.

5. If getting a live tree, make sure it’s fresh and water it to keep it fresh. Bend the needles up and down to make sure no needles fall off.

6. Don’t use electric lights on metallic trees.

7. If hanging stockings on the fireplace mantel, don’t light the fireplace.

8. Turn off all holiday lights when going to bed or leaving the house.

9. If using older decorations, check their labels. Some older tinsel is leadbased. If using angel hair, wear gloves to avoid irritation. Avoid breathing in artificial snow.

10. If using a ladder, be extra careful. Make sure to have good, stable

Husband and wife show at WVAM through the holidays

For those looking for a break from the holiday hustle and bustle, a new art exhibit is on display through Jan. 26, in the West Valley Art Museum (WVAM) gallery on the first floor of Peoria City Hall.

The exhibits’ art was created by husband and wife, George Palovich and Janet Trisler. On display is a range of ceramics, dolls, drawings, paintings and prints. The exhibit is named “Artistic Life Together,” based on the couple.

“It’s about two people who found each other who had the same passions and interests, deciding to collaborate,” said Palovich.

Trisler mentioned Palovich does more paintings than her but she does more ceramic pieces and dolls.

“We don’t collaborate on paintings but on all the ceramics work we consult one

World of Illumination opens in Glendale for first time

The World of Illumination officially launched at Westgate Nov. 27. The drive-through light show kicked off with a ceremonial light switch and ribbon-cutting.

Displaying over 2 million LED lights in a 25-minute drive through, animated light show synchronized to holiday and winter music, the show has gained popularity in past years in Tempe.

The show features a 36-foot tall animated snowman and simulated snowfall and runs until January 5. Owner Simon Kreisberger spoke at the opening.

A group surrounding the ceremony, and a line of cars flooded out of the parking lot into the street, honked and clapped in celebration when a giant light switch was flipped on by MakeA-Wish kids and the lights came on for the first time.

“If we can leverage this massive platform to do wonderful things in this community, let’s do it to the best of our ability,” Kreisberger said to the organization’s representatives.

“We feel so privileged. And to see these families out here, it’s why we do it.”

How to prevent plantar fasciitis

Luckily, plantar fasciitis is much easier to explain than it is to pronounce.

It’s basically an injury which you’d recognize from a very sharp pain, similar to a pinprick, underneath your foot.

It can come from too much running, having a long term problem with an Achilles tendon not properly fixed, from wearing running shoes a little too tight, running on hard surfaces (causing the muscles to tighten and joints to stiffen) or even… a weak lower back.

Take your pick!

Either way, it can be debilitating. And it can be quite painful too! Particularly for the first 20 minutes or so when you get out of bed.

It is made more likely by running on a hard, concrete surface in an attempt to increase cardiovascular fitness.

Another injury I would expect to see happen a lot more this time of the year is shin splints.

Again, it’s an overuse type of injury

This common injury typically rears its ugly head around this time of year, due to over-training.

But, you don’t usually see something like this with those professional runners or athletes.

In the early stages of training, you’re likely to see a lot more impact of ‘sudden’ ankle and foot injuries.

This happens because of the hard surfaces most runners will train on over the course of those weeks, and some injuries are just hard to avoid.

My tip for you to maintain fitness but limit stress through the foot and ankle to help avoid plantar fasciitis is to vary your training.

Get on your bike. Go for a swim. Do things like the elliptical or rower, so you’re not constantly training on hard ground.

A tale of two cities: New Community Resource Guide

“The Resource Guide is a booklet intended to be used as a quick reference tool to locate contact information for local and Valley-wide nonprofit organizations,” said Kristina Perez, Marketing and Communications Manager for the city of Peoria. She said it contains government agencies to assist individuals with basic needs and services.

The city of Peoria already has observed it so popular there are usually no hard copies in stock when they revisit the locations. The city delivers guides to Rio Vista Recreation Center, the Community Center and both libraries.

“Each time we return, most if not all of the guides are gone,” Perez said. “People also call in and visit the Community Assistance Resource Center to request copies and we routinely provide copies to city staff and the Peoria Unified School District. The Resource Guide is routinely referred to when helping citizens in need.”

very welcoming to new players.” Through joining the community, Scardina said she became more active outside of the womens-only club, and occasionally attends co-ed tournaments held at Tilt Studio in Tempe, an arcade featuring modern upright game cabinets as well as pinball machines.

Scardina joined the club during a time in her life in which she was grieving, she said. Scardina’s mother passed away in 2015, and her partner in 2016. These two events were followed by several deaths within the family in succession.

“I went through the grieving process, and to try and get out and get to know who I was, I went back to what I did as a child, what I enjoyed,” Scardina said. “That’s when I reached out to Belles and Chimes, to just try to get out and socialize.”

The interactions Belles and Chimes provided Scardina was healing in her grieving process and she said members were welcoming and accepting of players, no matter their background.

“It’s where I got to know ‘me’,” Scardina said. “It was a special moment I realized I could be back in social settings, and feel comfortable.”

Chandler resident Tracy Lindburgh, founder of the Phoenix chapter, said she initially heard about the club through a magazine article covering the Oakland players. She has been playing pinball for almost 25 years, spending her teenage years playing the game.

“The first time I remember playing pinball is at Castles and Coasters in Phoenix,” said Lindburgh.

Lindburgh said at the time she initially read the article, she realized she was not seeing many women playing the game in Phoenix.

Lindburgh founded the Belles and Chimes Phoenix chapter in 2017. She said the group initially began with 19 founding members.

Lindburgh said the hobby is primarily male-dominated and arcades were more commonly a hangout for men growing up. “There’s no physical reason men are better at pinball than women,” said Lindburgh. “I think they have been playing it longer. There are women who are just as good as any guy, but it takes time to develop game knowledge, experience and strategies on the various games.”

“Women are getting more years under their belts as competitive players,” said Lindburgh of the growing population of female competitive pinball players. “But 10 years ago, there weren’t a lot of women playing.”

Lindburgh said time and experience are the ultimate equalizers for women

playing competitive pinball, but feels barriers exist for women entering the competitive pinball team.

Kayden Helm is a Chandler resident who first became involved with the Phoenix Belles and Chimes pinball group two years ago. Helm said she and her wife, Olivia, had a small collection of video game cabinets at the time, and the pair wanted to meet new people also engaged in the hobby.

Helm said her wife found Belles and Chimes by stumbling across the group’s Facebook page, and the couple attended their first tournament. Kayden and Olivia Helm placed first and second place in the tournament, which Helm said prompted the pair to continue attending tournaments from that point forward.

Kayden Helm said Belles and Chimes is a social outlet for her, and a way for her to spend time with people who also share a passion for the game.

“My wife is very competitive, but for me, it’s all social. I enjoy talking to people, I enjoy sharing our machines with them,” said Helm.

“Belles and Chimes was my entry into competitive pinball,” said Olivia Helm.

“It gave me a safe and comfortable place to dip my feet into the water, and it’s given me a nice little pinball family.”

In comparison to competing in co-ed tournaments, Kayden said the atmosphere of Belles and Chimes tournaments is more relaxed after playing in both environments.

“It provides an opportunity for more comfortable interaction,” said Kayden of the group. “It’s a chance to take it down a notch and be more collaborative than competitive. Even though everyone still has their competitive edge, it’s very much more about lifting each other up, teaching each other, sharing what we know, and helping people get better.”

The group meets several times a month, bouncing between the houses of fellow members and establishments like Starfighters Arcade and Tilt Studio. On Nov. 23, Belles and Chimes gathered at the Helm household for a tournament and doubled as a fundraiser. The $5 entry fee paid by competing players was donated to Project Pinball, a nonprofit charity donating pinball machines to children’s hospitals to be enjoyed by patients, staff and family members alike for recreational purposes.

Olivia said the group is supportive, creating appeal for new female players.

“I wouldn’t say it’s not competitive, but it is definitely more of a friendly competition,” said Olivia.

“It’s OK not to be fantastic,” said Kayden.

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. A nun made a note, then posted it on the apple tray: “Take only one apple. God is watching.” Moving farther along the lunch line, at the end of the table, was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note: “Take all you want.

God is watching the apples.”

I’m a fan of listening to Christmas music this time of the year. Of course, everything these days needs to be politically correct these days including Christmas. So now we have songs like

songs about Santa Claus, silver bells, Grandmas who got run over by a reindeer, sleigh bells ring and last Christmas.

I love those songs but surely there is more to Christmas than wanting a hippopotamus for Christmas. Then I thought about some of the words in the song, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”: “He sees you when you’re sleeping, He knows when you’re awake.” God does it too and more. He sees and loves you. God watches more than apples. He watches us all the time.

Christmas is partly about Christ appearing for the sake of you. God knows you! God knows our zits, flaws, strengths, weaknesses, past, present and future. Yet, Jesus came on a silent night, holy night a long time ago for you personally and for us collectively to love, heal and save us.

One of God’s leaders named David was out on a dark night, looking up into the heavens, and thinking about God. In those days, people could see the stars, Milky Way, the planets so clearly it stunned them. The celestial sky’s immensity and clarity stunned David. It dropped him to his knees. David understood there was a Creator, a Designer, and Way-maker, who created all of creation.

I will paraphrase Psalm 8:3-6 for you: David looked up into the heavens and thought, “When I consider Thy heavens…the moon and the stars, which Thou has ordained; God, what is man, that You would remember or think about him? And the son of man, that you would care of Him? Yet, God, you have made man to lack but little of God (Elohim in the Hebrew). God you have crowned him with glory and majesty and put man in charge of making the earth a better place for all people.”

In other words, if God is a 10, we humans are an eight or a nine as God’s crowning creation. We have never been unloved. Author John Piper wrote a book entitled Enjoying God. It’s about seeing yourself through God’s eyes.

Hold on because you don’t hear about Piper’s side of God very often. What he says is the natural outcome of a verse in Psalm 8.

“You may not realize it, but God the Father is ravished by you. You make Him smile. You make Him laugh. You make His heart beat faster. The Bible

says in Zephaniah 3:17, you make Him sing for joy. Whether you believe it or not, it doesn’t stop God from responding to you. He sees your hair, your skin, your smile and, He rejoices.

The blemishes, scars and extra pounds may weigh on your heart, but those types of things don’t weigh on His heart. God loves your freckles.

He loves your funny shaped toes. He loves your uniqueness. He loves you when you’re awake, vibrant and full of life. He loves you when you’re down, struggling and lethargic. He even loves you when you’re sleeping. He gets excited when you wake up, with morning breath and no makeup. He loves accompanying you throughout the day.

Just being with you is enough.

He isn’t tolerating you. He isn’t just putting up with you. He isn’t waiting for you to get older or more mature in your Christian walk before He can love or enjoy you. He loves you right where you are, right now. He is not keeping a record of your mistakes or the times you blow it. God took care of those things a long ago on the cross. All He sees is you and me, and He enjoys us.”

Get the point? It’s easy to miss it, if we miss it. One of the reasons Christmas happened was for us. Christ appeared for us, to save us and redeem us. But until we see it, we don’t see it.

Some of us will see the light by revelation; others just see the light when they open the refrigerator door in the middle of the night. Every Christmas is an opportunity for us to hear God singing, “All I want for Christmas is you… whether you are sleeping or awake.”

What’s the takeaway here? There are only three opinions in life that matter.

What God thinks of you. What you think of God after knowing what God thinks of you. And what you think of you after knowing what God thinks of you. In other words, know your value, then add tax. Merry Christmas.

NASCAR delivers bears to Banner Children’s Hospital

BY PEORIA STAFF ISM Raceway and the NASCAR Foundation, along with local NASCAR drivers Jagger Jones, Jace Jones and Sara Houston, teamed up for the third-annual “Operation Speedy Bear Brigade” on Giving Tuesday, delivering stuffed Speedy Bears to children at Banner Children’s Hospital within Banner Thunderbird Medical Center.

“It always a very special day when we get to share the excitement of racing with our community, and in this case young patients, siblings and families at Banner Children’s Hospital,” said Jagger Jones, the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West 2019 Rookie of the Year. “I’m honored to have been a part of ‘Operation Speedy Bear Brigade’ with Sara and my brother Jace, and

In addition to ISM Raceway’s efforts at Banner Children’s Hospital, “Opera-

tion Speedy Bear Brigade” took place in over 30 locations across the country on Giving Tuesday, including participation from several NASCAR office and track locations.

“The Speedy Bear Brigade truly demonstrates the generosity of our sport,” the NASCAR Foundation Executive Director Nichole Krieger said.

“This effort has continued to grow from year to year, without losing sight of our ultimate goal to bring smiles to the faces of so many children who really need it.”

The effort was organized through the NASCAR Foundation’s Speediatrics Children’s Fund, which supports needs expressed by hospitals, specialty clinics, camps and others providing children’s medical and health care services.
