One is 32, the other 42. Both are married and fathers. And both love their jobs. They must be pretty good at their work, as Greg Bury was given the Johnny Valentine Award and Michael Parks was named Firefighter of the Year by the Peoria Fire-Medical Department. After receiving the awards at a Nov. 22 banquet, both used the same word to describe their emotions: “Humbled.” According to a press release, “Each year the Johnny Valentine Award is given to the sworn member who best epitomizes the

Peoria Fire-Medical Department’s core values: team, trust, professionalism and efficiency.” Johnny Valentine was a Peoria firefighter who died from brain cancer in 1996.

The robots are coming. Make no mistake about it, androids are invading nearly every aspect of American life. They even await patients in the operating room. And Dr. Ryan Pinnell would not have it any other way. At 35, he is on the younger end of the surgeons at Abrazo Arrowhead, which primarily serves the Glendale and Peoria areas. Like many his age, Pinnell was a gamer growing up. “I don’t have time for it now,” he said, giving a tour of the operating room where he spends much of his time.
