Peoria Art Commission OKs arts action plan

Peoria exceeds in enriching the quality of life for its residents through a variety of public events, cultural programming and continuing to represent the traditions and heritage of the city through public art.

The Peoria Arts Commission has approved the arts action plan for the 2022 fiscal year. It will continue to strengthen the community outreach and public art accessibility for the city.

Despite the pandemic, the commission managed to accomplish many of the items on the 2021 fiscal plan, including the funding for arts grants, the utility box art wraps and the arts postcards. These programs will all be continued and expanded on this upcoming year.

Peoria Unified launches educational podcast

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF Peoria Unified released the first episode of its new podcast, the Progress Report.

In episodes of the Progress Report, the district will breakdown current district projects and programs into more depth than is provided on its biweekly podcast, Trending Peoria.

Episodes will focus on major updates within Peoria Unified, including the strategic plan, voter initiatives and academic

achievement. Similar to Trending Peoria, the Progress Report features interviews from Peoria Unified employees. Depending on the subject matter, interviews may also include teachers, administrators, support staff, students, community members and industry experts.

The district’s first episode will provide a strategic plan update and include feedback from the parent engagement forum, held last month. You can read more about this episode below:

This fall, Peoria Unified will enter the restart and rebuild stage of its strategic plan. This reimagined plan will span three to five years.

The plan is centered on four strategic perspectives: student learning, safety and well-being, community connectedness and stewardship of resources.

The Art Grants program is essential to organizations in Peoria as they broaden the reach of arts access and engage the residents of the city. The budget for the arts grants this upcoming year is $75,000, which will fund 16 local organizations.

TheaterWorks, one of grant recipients, produced “Curiouser and Curiouser,” a live immersive theatre production in which the audience had the opportunity to experience a walking narrative through the entire theater.

Cate Hinkle, TheaterWorks managing director, said TheaterWorks is a “theater of the community” and feels that it’s essential to offer engaging programs with the city.

“The arts commission plays a very integral role in the ability for arts organizations to produce and create programming for the benefit of the citizens of Peoria. There’s been programs in the past that we wouldn’t have been able to provide without the support of the Arts Grants,” Hinkle said.

Another program that will continue in 2022 will be the utility box art wraps. This program gives local artists the opportunity to showcase their art to the city in the form of creative art wraps on utility boxes.

One of the 2021 contest winners, Kesmine Hickman, said she is grateful for the opportunity to display her art publicly in the city.

“Art is something that everybody can relate to on some level and that’s why I want to use my art to spread positivity. I really enjoyed participating because it allowed me to try something so different and it was just such a fun and honorable experience,” she said.

For the upcoming year, the commission hopes to continue their signature open events in a safe manner. Due to

COVID-19 restrictions, traditional events, such as the arts and culture festival, could not take place.

Julia Smock, chair of the Peoria Arts Commission, looks forward to seeing some sort of “normalcy” in the arts in the schools and community of Peoria.

Smock said she believes art is an essential element in the community, as she has been impacted by the arts per-

sonally and sees the commitment to it every day.

“The arts are about getting people to dialogue, and many people don’t think about how comprehensive it is. It’s a huge part of our economy and who we are,” she said.

The 2022 Arts Action Plan will be presented to the Peoria city council early next year for approval.

Abrazo Arrowhead named a top regional hospital

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF Abrazo Arrowhead Campus has been recognized as a top regional hospital in the 2021-22 U.S. News Best Hospitals, ranked as “High Performing” in seven adult procedures and conditions.

Abrazo Arrowhead Campus received High Performing rankings for treating the following adult procedures and conditions: abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure, pneumonia and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

The rankings placed Abrazo Arrowhead Campus in the top 10 for both metro Phoenix (No. 6) and the state of Arizona (No. 7). US News’ evaluation of Abrazo Arrowhead Campus also includes data from Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital, a satellite of the Arrowhead Campus.

Peoria police to host motorcycle safety event

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF The Peoria Police Department, in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, will host an interactive motorcycle safety class from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at the Peoria Sports Complex, 16101 N. 83rd Avenue.

There is no charge for this one-day class, and it is open to the public.

The program will consist of a short classroom discussion to cover safe riding habits and overall motorcycle safety followed by hands-on course instruction. During the riding portion

of the course, critical riding skills will be reinforced to promote the optimal response to dangerous riding situations.

Motorcycle riders wishing to apply for this course can fill out a short application at peoriaaz.gov/motorcycleclass. This is not a course for new riders to get an endorsement. A valid driver’s license and motorcycle endorsement are required to attend this class. Selected participants will be notified prior to the class.

Grant Woods was the best of Arizonans

Every story requires a headline, so when Grant Woods left us Oct. 23 at age 67, the headline writers called him “former Arizona Attorney General.” This is absolutely true — Grant served two terms as AG between 1990 and 1998 — but also a wretchedly poor summation of everything he encompassed as a human being.

Father of five. Grandfather to JoJo. Husband. Attorney. Writer. Talk show host. Political commentator. Playwright. Musician. Community volunteer. World-class joker. Tennis player.

Patriot. Basketball court trash talker.

Songwriter. Pain in the butt.

I’ll stop there, though the breadth of Grant’s many passions calls out for more. If it’s possible to cram a century of living into 67 years, Grant did so, which is a life lesson I will take away from having known him.

Another one is to lead with your heart, to follow love where it takes you.

Grant was passionate about music and writing songs. In 2015, he asked

me to help him drum up publicity for one of his endless side projects: songs he’d written performed by artists with Arizona ties. He had lined up a long list of talented musicians, including Nils Lofgren of the E Street Band, Lawrence Zubia of the Pistoleros, bluesman Hans Olson, and legendary local vocalists Alice Tatum and Francine Reed. I’ll confess to some initial fear that a lawyer dabbling in songwriting might be, you know, not great.

I never should have worried. My favorite track on the album is “Me and Preacher,” sung by Blaine Long.

It remains on my Spotify playlist and I sing along every time it pops up.

Some of Grant’s lyrics: You’ve got to try when the burning’s high/And you must believe when the pain is deep/You’ve got to march right on, singing that gospel song. The day will come, when the Lord will set you free.

That was Grant, always marching on, singing his truth. We worked together for some clients where lawyering and public relations intersected. I admired his intelligence and charisma.

He never dominated the conversation. He was the voice of wisdom, an

experienced legal mind who sliced through the posturing, bad ideas and ego clashes. He took pride in getting the team where we needed to go.

He was like that on the basketball court at lunchtime, too. Grant liked to bring the ball up court, a point guard who distributed to teammates and launch Steph Curry-length jumpshots, of which he made a surprising number. No hoops game with Grant was complete without trash talk.

One of the guys we played with was an assistant city manager named Dave, who like Grant never met a shot he didn’t like. Grant prided himself on getting in your face on defense. Dave, not so much. This led Grant to refer to him as “Ave” for days on end. Why? “Because there’s no D in Dave.”

At age 28, fresh out of law school, Grant served as chief of staff for then-Congressman John McCain.

Theirs was a lifelong bond marked by a mutual love of Arizona, its sports teams and its politics. Both men put people before party, service before self.

At McCain’s funeral, Grant’s eulogy gained national attention. His final summation of the great senator provides another lesson to be remembered.

“He served his country with honor,” Grant said of his friend. “He fought the good fight. He finished the race.

He kept the faith.”

That was Grant Woods in a paragraph. He marched right on. He fought the good fight. He was the best of us.

AROUND THE BLUHMIN’ TOWN

A welcome return of an old friend

It’s a scary world out there. Sometimes, we just need a friend. A buddy who will walk miles through a scorching desert, escape the perils of predators, suffer through the wind, rain and dust of monsoons with no map, GPS or cellphone, just to make it up your driveway, saunter in through your open door (or doggy door) and once again, grace your life with a visit. Welcome back Manuel! He is one big, beautiful tarantula, who every year for about 30 years, routinely spends a few months with my friend, Diane.

Diane gives us thrilling reports of finding Manuel in very odd places. You see, this is what he does. Shows up,

unannounced and then lounges around the house for three months. On the ceiling (would scare me over my bed), in the shower stall (stay dirty that day), on the kitchen counter (eat out) and sometimes just resting on the back of the sofa (keep standing). And in a most peculiar place, resting inside her hair curlers (wear your hair straight). Yes, Manuel makes himself at home!

Let me tell you the story from the beginning. Our spidey, shows up for about three months each year. The arachnid specialist at the Phoenix Zoo speculates that this tarantula has an established migration pattern which has been likely imprinted into the offspring. And since a female tarantula can live 25 years (males usually 10 to 12 years) it might be safe to say that this furry little beast is actually the son or daughter of Manuel. Or, could Manuel be Manuela?

It all started one July day, when Di-

ane noticed something with a big belly and hairy legs walking into her house through an open door (no, it wasn’t her neighbor). Yikes, a spider of the biggest, furriest kind was strutting around her kitchen! Consider the kind heart and calm disposition that it takes to open your home to a big, fat spider! Not a pet, nor a companion, just a little creature of God that strolled innocently into the house and decided to hang around.

After checking out the premises and the occupant, he liked what he found and keeps coming back.

This year, Manuel arrived much later than usual, at the end of October! Diane leaves the lights on for him, so he can catch plenty of bugs. Diane’s doggy greets Manuel like he is an old friend, sniffing the spider thoroughly but mostly leaving him alone. The cat also will acknowledge Manuel’s presence, yet never bothers him.

There might be problems in the world, but with Manuel’s arrival, it is a reminder that the earth is spinning on its proper axis and the stars are lined up just right. Life is good, because one, happy eight-legged critter seems to have found his way “home.” So, if you see one of our Arizona wonders, like the tarantula, please look kindly and do not be afraid. They may come unannounced, but they make perfect houseguests. So, leave your porch light on, as you never know who will show up and walk through your door.

Walmart launches InHome Delivery service in the Valley

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF Walmart is expanding its InHome Delivery service into the Valley.

The service is designed to save families time by delivering fresh groceries and everyday essentials directly into their kitchen or garage refrigerators.

The service began Oct. 26, and Peoria is one of six locations across the country where InHome Delivery is available.

Customers can visit inhome. walmart.com to see if their address is eligible, to start. Then, they sign up and begin their 30-day free trial period.

After signing up, they can schedule the installation of their smart lock or can begin placing orders from the Walmart app (or website).

Those who have chosen to defer getting a lock installed, their order will be delivered to their doorstep.

Associates will knock and notify customers of a delivery.

When customers schedule a lock installation, technicians will arrive with a smart lock for either a door or

garage. The lock is $49.95 and installation is free.

Staff can also enable many existing front or garage door keypads at no cost. Once registered, customers can

receive unlimited deliveries of groceries and home essentials on orders over $35, as well as unlimited pickups of returns of items ordered from Walmart.com.

After the 30-day free trial, customers pay $19.95 per month, with no additional fees, including tips.

First month is free and customers can cancel or pause at any time. All deliveries are handled by tenured Walmart associates. After the lock is installed, associates use a one-time access code to unlock a customer’s door or garage through their InHome app, which pairs with the smart entry technology.

Truex Jr. steers support to cancer patients

To Martin Truex Jr., racing in the NASCAR circuit means more than jockeying between competitors.

The New Jersey native and his longtime partner, Sherry Pollex, use his position to support the community with causes like ovarian and childhood cancers.

“We were so fortunate as kids to be healthy and to have great families and access to things to be successful,” Truex Jr. said. “We felt very fortunate, and we do our part to help give back to kids.”

Truex Jr. and Pollex established the foundation in 2007, which started as a way to help children in need.

In 2014, Pollex was diagnosed with stage-three ovarian cancer and the couple refocused their mission to raise awareness, boost advocacy and generate financial support for underfunded cancer initiatives specific to childhood and ovarian cancers.

Pollex’s cancer recurred in December, according to her Instagram.

“Unfortunately, my cancer is back (which is expected with Stage 3C recurrent ovarian cancer as the cancer begins to outsmart the drugs we are on),” Pollex said in her posted message, which included photos of her and Truex Jr. in her hospital room. “So here I am going to battle again.

“Praying my doctors can remove all of the disease so I can start chemo again soon and be out there fighting for all of you soon! Much love to all of you out there fighting or caring for a loved one that is.”

Heart Beat: How to Spot a Clot By: DR. RAHUL MALHOTRA, MD, FACC, FSCAI PAID ADVERTISEMENT

A thrombosis is a blood clot that blocks the normal flow of blood through an artery or vein.

Thromboses can occur anywhere in the body including the upper limbs (arms), though this is typically less frequent than occurrences in the lower extremities. When they occur in a deep vein, such as the veins of the lower leg, they are known as deep vein thromboses (or, DVT).

Risks of a DVT. DVTs cause death of the surrounding tissue, swelling and pain. They can be particularly dangerous when part of the clot breaks off and travels to the lung (causing a pulmonary embolism or, clot in the lung) or to the brain (causing a stroke).

The resulting damage is always significant and may lead to sudden death.

Who is Impacted. According to the National Blood Clot Alliance, 274 people die every day from the consequences of a blood clot.

Neither age nor gender offer protection: you can develop a clot just as easily at 25 years of age as at 85 years of age. Most are the result of a traumatic injury, a surgical complication or due to taking hormone replacement therapy. Smoking and some birth control medications also present an increased risk of blood clots.

The warning signs and symptoms of a pulmonary embolism (or clot to the lung) include: • Shortness of breath that is sudden and unaccountable • Chest pain or discomfort that visibly worsens when you inhale deeply or when you cough • Feeling lightheaded and/or dizzy, or fainting • Fast heartbeat or rapid pulse • Coughing up blood

What to Watch For. Symptoms of a DVT in the leg include swelling and cramping pain or soreness in the calf muscles. The skin over the area can become reddened or warm to the touch because of the underlying inflammation. DVTs can also occur without warning and without noticeable symptoms.

If you have any of the symptoms noted above, seek medical attention immediately.

While blood clots, DVTs and other vessel blockages pose serious dangers, regular cardiovascular screenings can help to identify DVTs and other blood clots at an early stage, allowing for timely, and often minimally invasive, intervention to avoid potentially serious outcomes. Employers struggle with motivations filling open roles

President and Chief Executive Officer Preoria Chamber of Commerce Dependable labor and unemployment is a challenge across Arizona. Alternatives to hourly work create attractive options for qualified individuals. Some people seeking assistance to help in between landing another job can, and do, take advantage of employers’ desperation. When it comes to money, fraud and, in this case, unemployment fraud can occur.

Relationships with job seekers are another important driver when showing up for an interview. How does an employer navigate this challenge?

First, there are thousands of job openings throughout Arizona and Peoria — all in a wide variety of industries and skill levels. And out of this population, anywhere from 25% to 30% seek unemployment. To claim unemployment, there are specific criteria to follow. One element is that job seekers must certify how many hours they’ve worked and if they’ve made any job contacts or interviews. They’re required to complete many job contacts a week.

Individuals must be truthful and do their part to claim benefits. Unfortunately, there are fraudulent claimants. Many

of our Peoria employers state their positions are not being filled.

Why, you say?

A key reason is due to “no shows.” Candidates are called and scheduled for interviews, yet the candidates don’t show up — for many reasons. But the trend is concerning and impacts time and money for Peoria businesses. While we know of no direct correlation between “no shows” and people on unemployment, it is a consistent complaint from our employers. Those claiming unemployment are unlikely to be caught unless detected during the scheduling process.

Job seekers receiving unemployment while failing to make those job contacts in good faith are committing fraud. If they are attached to a job and their employer calls them back and they actively do not respond, it is fraud. They should lose benefits or have to repay benefits based on the length of time it has been occurring.

In this competitive job market, effective acquisition strategies and value-based communications are the new normal to see your job candidates engage fully in your hiring process.

Employers that suspect fraud should immediately report it to the labor governing agency.

Finally, job seekers have many alternatives, regardless of motivation. Many are at hourly rates above minimum wage and thus are attractive. Employers must seek to build a relationship and equity with job seekers in the first set of interactions and discussions before the interview is scheduled. Stressing the company’s culture and opportunity spectrum for growth and career development must be stressed and merchandised to compete for the job seeker’s time and attention.

Glendale woman’s debut memoir generating buzz

After the ultimate betrayal in her marriage led to divorce in 2009, Glendale resident LeTisha Jackson decided to turn her husband’s adultery into a chance to tackle what she believes is a fractured sisterhood.

While most would be quick to place blame on the cheating husbands in the scenario, Jackson created a book, “Woman to Woman: Letters from Wives to Mistresses,” in which women take the blame in their decision to tear apart another woman’s family and forget their loyalty to the sisterhood Jackson so strongly believes in.

“It may have been my husband who broke our vows. It may have been my husband who broke my trust and my spirit. But it was his mistress who broke my heart,” Jackson said. “‘Woman to Woman’ is based on my personal interactions with my ex-husband’s mistress. It’s a book that contains real-life letters from wives and mistresses, where they in effect speak woman to woman. And although it is a book that does take to task our sisters who have no problem contributing to the tearing apart of another woman’s family by of course getting involved with their husbands, it really is a sisterhood-based book. My goal is to change the dynamic in the female community. And that’s what this book is going to do.”

When first finding out about her husband’s affair, Jackson said a book was the last thing on her mind. It wasn’t until she confronted her husband’s mistress that she decided to embark on her journey of writing her first novel.

“We had our conversation, and as I was about to leave she said, ‘Can I say

one more thing? Woman to woman, I just want you to know,’ and the rest of that is really a big reveal in the book,” Jackson said.

“But what she said following those words, ‘Woman to woman,’ not only broke my heart, but really made me realize what the problem was within our community. And when I got

home, I could not forget what she said and I wrote it down.

And as I began to write down what happened a couple hours later, I just had pages and pages of notes.

And that was the beginning of the book.”

After completing her book, Jackson decided she wanted it to be a novel for all women, not just those who could relate one sidedly.

“It’s for wives, exwives, current wives, but it’s also for current mistresses, former mistresses. It is a book that I wrote for every single woman on the planet starting from probably 18

years old,” she said.

While writing the book, Jackson experienced a delay after putting it aside when a publisher told her it was offensive to blame another woman.

It wasn’t until Khloe Kardashian’s partner Tristan Thompson’s cheating scandal became public that Jackson decided she had to finish her book.

“When I saw all of the harsh backlash that she took from mostly all women, I said that is enough, I have had it. And what sparked me to finally finish the book was not just the backlash but just the kind of the righteous indignation that women get when another woman dares to speak the truth,” Jackson said.

“I finally decided that we as women need is the opportunity to be able to externalize these feelings. We need to be able to say, ‘You’re another woman, and you’re helping to tear apart another woman.’”

Once she finished her book and it was time to publish, Jackson admitted to having trouble finding an agent and publisher, so she decided to take matters into her own hands.

“Because our country has been so pandemic-centric and politically centric in these past two years, I wasn’t able to land an agent. So I just decided I don’t care, I’ll do it myself. I don’t need anybody to put this out,” Jackson said.

Now, Jackson’s memoir has received positive reviews from award-winning journalists, TV hosts, best-selling authors, Grammy-nominated songwriters and TV stars, and even landed an interview on CW33’s “Morning After” TV show with Jennifer Anchondo.

With the success of her book, Jackson said part of the funds she receives from sales is going toward various research funds that support Alzheimer’s disease.

“My book is dedicated in part to my precious grandmother, who is living with dementia brought on by Alzheimer’s. … Every year I saw the advancement of the disease, and living with her by myself I recognized how SEE BUZZ PAGE 23

Josh West, father bring musical partnership to High Street

Glendale father-son duo Glen and Josh West have long shared their passion for music. Constantly surrounded by the other’s music taste and influence, the duo performs around the Valley as the Josh West Trio.

Josh said he grew up listening to bands from the ’60s and ’70s who created the foundation for today’s mass-appeal, pop music. As he got older, he shared the ’90s grunge and alternative genres with his father, and the duo’s influence on one another is visible in their performances. The Josh West Trio band covers pop, rock and folk artists ranging from The Beatles to Radiohead.

The trio performs as part of the Slider Throwdown from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, in High Street, 5415 E. High Street, Phoenix.

Glen has decades of guitar-playing experience under his belt, and as a teacher, it’s no surprise that his son is a well-respected student.

“For me personally, I don’t want to do music with anyone else. It would just kind of feel weird,” Glen said.

“We have a better relationship probably than most musicians,” Josh said.

He compared the dynamic of working with his father to that of a band of brothers collaborating. Arguments are inevitable, but at the end of the day, Josh and Glen know the disagreements are a natural part of the songwriting process. The two still have a strong bond that keeps them from taking work too seriously.

Josh and Glen are frequently collaborating on music and sharing ideas for verses and choruses. They only use melodies or lyrics they feel a strong attachment to, taking the time to discard or tweak any sounds that don’t fit into the rest of the song.

“When you spend that much time

Josh was a contestant on “The Voice” at only 17 years old. Now in his early 20s, he reflected on the experience and said in retrospect, the hard work mostly paid off in ways unrelated to his music career.

“I got a lot of discipline from it just because the stakes were so high,” he said.

The two said their next single, “Smell Ya Later,” is on the way. The lyrics resemble the opposite of the previous high-pressure experience from “The Voice,” according to Josh. The lyrics tell stories of the duo’s journeys to music, which includes the frustrations or obstacles along the way. Rather than continuing the habit of being overly serious or leaving hidden messages in songs, they kept things fun and left the meaning purposefully straightforward.

“It’s very tongue-and-cheek,” Glen said. “It’s very fun to just write a lighthearted, humorous lyric.”

Here is an unusual story that happened some years ago. An executive secretary to the president of a large corporation made a costly mistake. It cost the company $50,000. She was devastated and brought her letter of resignation to the president, explaining, “I realize what a dumb thing I did. I am very sorry. I know that the mistake cost the company $50,000. So here is my letter of resignation.”

“Are you crazy?” he thundered. “I have been teaching and mentoring you every week. Now, you have made a big mistake. I have just invested $50,000 in your education, and you’re going to leave? No, ma’am. You are not going to leave. You have cost me too much to lose my investment in you.”

His heart of compassion acted on behalf of another. The investment was high, but the returns were and continue to be higher than the investment.

To those aspiring leaders, allow me to share a bit of advice. First, be teachable, not offended. Most people learn by their failures, not their successes.

Second, strive for excellence, not perfection. Your growth on the inside fuels your growth on the outside. Finally, those who try and fail at something are infinitely better than those who try to do nothing and succeed.

Aspiring leaders, if you want to make everyone happy but react negatively to constructive criticism, please don’t be a leader. Sell ice cream. The only perfect leaders are the ones you don’t know very well. Those leaders went through the same learning curve as you are now.

The president even accepted the responsibility for her mistake. He understood with privilege comes responsibility. As a result, he could foster a defining moment in a new executive secretary’s life. He knew the secretary would grow from this incident, not just go through this incident. I wish every mentor and their students worked together this way.

Teamwork makes the dream work.

Jesus accepted responsibility for the 12 disciples under Him too. When Peter denied the Lord, Jesus prayed for him that he would not lose his faith. Later, when Peter foolishly cut off a soldier’s ear with a sword, Jesus supernaturally healed the soldier’s ear. Jesus, in effect, was saying to Peter, “Peter, I will repair your mistake because you are going to learn from this experience and grow.”

After this incident, Peter grew and changed the world.

I realize that some mistakes can be deadly, but honestly, most aren’t. I also recognize that if the secretary repeatedly made the same mistake, the president would have needed to take another course of action. But couldn’t we be a

I love this woman’s response. She chose to be teachable, not defensive.

She took responsibility for what she did. She grew through the problem and didn’t repeat it. She humbled herself and then got promoted, just like the Bible says in many places.

Her humility and willingness to take responsibility took her to the top. She expected the worst but received the best.

Why? She was honest and hubris-free.

But it takes two parties to make this work. Notice the president in this article. He wasn’t condescending, petty or critical. The president realized that people occasionally stumble and make mistakes, sometimes huge mistakes. He knew there was no such thing as perfect people or a perfect business. Everyone is in the process of growing and learning. The mentor allowed his executive secretary to learn, and that allowed the executive secretary to grow. It takes a big picture leader demonstrating authentic leadership to do that.

And remember, nothing in the world can keep a person with first-class thinking down, and nothing in the world can keep a person with fourth class thinking up. If you have failed in some way, remember this. Though no one can go back and make a new beginning, everyone can start from now and make a new ending. Your past refines you, not defines you.

For those in leadership or mentoring positions, allow me to give you some advice from sage leaders out there in “leadership land.” First, remember, criticize the act, not the person. If handled correctly, failure is a teacher, not an undertaker, for most people. Second, before you try and change others, remember how hard it is to change yourself.

And leaders, remember a leader is the one who climbs the tallest tree, surveys the situation, and yells, “Wrong jungle.” Sometimes you have to say what you mean, but that doesn’t give you the right to be mean when you say it. Coach Tom Landry described how to win the Super Bowl. “My job is to get men to do what they don’t want to do to achieve something they have always wanted to achieve.”

Here’s an acrostic called L.E.A.D.E.R. I think will be helpful to you about leadership. L – Love is what you do; E – Excel incompetency; A – Act with integrity; D – Demonstrate accountability; E – Empower others; R – Respond humbly.

There’s no such thing as a winner or a loser. In God’s world, there are only winners and learners.

Sunrise Mountain High School nominated for National Student Production Awards

The Foundation of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) has determined the nominees for the 2021 National Student Production Awards, selected from high school student entries across the country in 25 programming and craft categories.

Peoria Unified School District’s Sunrise Mountain High School received five nominations in the following categories: magazine program, music video, audio/sound, ​​director and talent – news or sports.

“The future journalists, analysts, correspondents and entertainers of the next generation will be found among these talented young nominees represented here,” said Adam Sharp, president and CEO of NATAS. “Highlighting their work and encouraging their pursuit of excellence is one of the primary mandates of our foundation.”

Ryan Kraska was nominated in four categories, Kalini Aguon-Sewell in three and Lamley Andrews in one.

While the students were nominated for their work completed in high school, they graduated from Sunrise Mountain in May 2021.

Despite having graduated from high school, Kraska admitted it is still an honor to get recognition for the work completed in the last year.

“Even though we have moved past it and we’re making better things now, it was like we were justified in our own feelings of being proud of our work.

We know that the old things we made are still worthy,” he said.

Kraska and Aguon-Sewell are currently freshmen at Arizona State University’s New American Film School.

ORDINANCE NO 2021-22 AN ORDINANCE OF THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PEORIA, ARIZONA, AMENDING CHAPTER 3 OF THE PEORIA CITY CODE (1992) BY AMENDING SECTION 3-17 PERTAINING TO DESIGN REVIEW BOARD; ESTABLISHMENT AND MEMBERSHIP; AND PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY AND FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. THEREFORE, it is ordained by the Mayor and Council of the City of Peoria as follows: SECTION 1. Chapter 3 of the Peoria City Code (1992) is amended by amending section 3-17 pertaining to Design Review Board; Establishment and Membership, which shall read as follows: Sec. 317. - Design Review Board; establishment and membership. (a) There is hereby created a Design Review Board to be composed of seven (7) members consisting of the following: Five (5) members shall be architects. Five (5) members shall be architects, landscape architects, land or urban design planners, professional engineers, land developers, builders, contractors, or persons otherwise qualified by design background training or experience. (2) Two (2) individuals who are residents of the City. (b) Only members listed in subsection (a)(2) above are required to be residents of the City. However, a significant effort shall be made to recruit Peoria residents in all categories. SECTION 2. If any section, subsection, sentence, clause or phrase of this Ordinance is for any reason held to be invalid or unconstitutional by the decision of any Court of competent jurisdiction, such decision shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions of this Ordinance.
