Hunt ahead in Acacia District race

Results are unofficial as of Wednesday morning, but the early count shows Peoria Acacia District Councilmember Vicki Hunt is ahead by a 4 percent margin, 2,215 (52 percent) votes to 2,066 (48 percent) for challenger Brittany Burback.

Late Tuesday evening after the polls had been closed for two hours, Hunt reached out to voters. “I want to thank my husband and family, Mayor (Cathy) Carlat and City Council, firefighters and police and everyone else who worked on, endorsed and supported my campaign, especially business leaders and Old Town residents,� Hunt said. “We’ve made tremendous strides in revitalizing our Old Town, enhancing neighborhoods and decreasing crime rates in our city.

Arizona Broadway Theatre hosts free Veterans Day concert Arizona Broadway Theatre (ABT) will host a free Veterans Day concert – “PROJECT PRESLEY: A Salute to The King!� — starring multi-awardwinning tribute artist, Chance Tinder, on Nov. 11, beginning at 8 p.m. in the newly-renovated Encore Room.

The concert for veterans and active duty enlisted service members is sponsored by the city of Peoria. Seating is limited, and reservations will be taken on a first-come-first-serve basis. Tickets are available by calling the ABT Box Office at 623-776-8400, Ext. 0.

In another important race for West Valley residents — Congressional District 8 — Republican incumbent Debbie Lesko chalked up an impressive victory over Democrat Hiral Tipirneni. Lesko received 123,681 votes (57 percent) to Tipirneni’s 94,583 (43 percent).

“I’m very thankful to the voters for putting their faith in me and continuing to work hard for them,” Lesko said.

Questioned about issues she would focus on going forward, Lesko said her top priority would continue to be “helping my constituents” with veteran concerns, Social Security, Medicare, immigration and securing the border.

“Border problems with the caravan at the border — we really need to fix the immigration system,” she said.

With the knowledge that Democrats had taken back the U.S. House of Representatives, Lesko said, “We have to work together.”

Regarding immigration reform, Lesko said, “We really need both sides to work together.”

Monday, Lesko said she would be back in Washington, D.C. “It’s been one heckuva year, a sprint, four elections, set up offices. It’s been a busy year, I have been blessed.”

In other local elections, unofficial results show Republican Rick Gray defeating independent challenger Kathy Knecht by a 53-to-47 percent margin in the race for state senate in District 21.

Gray pulled in 30,209 votes to Knecht’s 26,439.

In the race for state representative in District 21, Republicans Kevin Payne and Tony Rivero defeated Democrats Bradley Hughes and Gilbert Romero.

Payne received 30,695 votes (29 percent); Rivero had 28,916 (28 percent); Hughes 22,218 (21 percent); and Romero 22,409 (22 percent).

In the Legislative District 22 state senate race, Republican David Livingston received 64 percent of the votes (53,008), while his opponent, Democrat Wendy Garcia, received 36 percent (29,800).

Republicans took both state representative seats in Legislative District 22. Frank Carroll and Ben Toma each received 32 percent of the votes, while Democrat Valerie Harris received 18 percent and Democrat Teri Sarmiento received 19 percent.

In the race for justice of the peace in the Manistee Precinct, Donald Watts ran unopposed. The same was true in the justice of the peace race in Arrowhead Precinct, where Craig Wismer also ran unopposed and received 100 percent of the votes. In the Arrowhead Precinct constable race, Michael Branham also received 100 percent of the votes.

November 9, 2018 Voted onto the board of the Central Arizona Water Conservation District, where five seats were up for election, were: Lisa Atkins, Terry Goddard, Heather A. Macre, Jennifer Martin and April M. Pinger.

State office numbers Gov. Doug Ducey received 58 percent of the vote to challenger, Democrat David Garcia’s 40 percent.

Green Party candidate Angel Torres received 2 percent of the vote.

Mark Brnovich defeated Democrat January Contreras by a 54-to46-percent-margin in the race for attorney general.

Kimberly Yee, former state senator in Legislative District 20, defeated Democrat Mark Manoil by a 56-to-44-percent margin.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction candidates — Republican Frank Riggs and Democrat Kathy Hoffman were tied at 50 percent at press time.

Statewide propositions: how they voted Proposition 125 — This proposition passed by a margin of 52 to 48 percent. It will increase pension funding for corrections officers and elected officials. Every elected official from Legislative Districts within Glendale’s and Peoria’s boundaries, as well as U.S. Rep. Debbie Lesko, R-District 8, were in favor of Proposition 125, according to the 2018 General Election.

Proposition 126 — This proposition succeeded with 65 percent of the voters saying yes. It would have prohibited new or increased taxes on services such as auto repairs, haircuts and childcare.

Proposition 127 – It was a resounding no vote on this proposition — 69 percent in the unofficial count. It would require electric utility companies to increase the portion of their retail energy sales generated from certain types of renewable energy resources, not counting pre-1997 hydropower or nuclear. It would also have mandated they increase their use of energy generated and distributed from customers’ premises.

Proposition 305 — Another major percentage — 65 percent — said no to this proposition, which would have expanded eligibility for education empowerment scholarship accounts, which are used to pay for tuition, books, etc. for private or home-based schools. The scholarship amount is equal to 90 percent (100 percent for low-income students) of the allotted funding that otherwise would have gone to the student’s public school district or charter school.

Proposition 306 — Voters said yes to this proposition by a 58-percent margin.

It will prohibit candidates who finance their campaigns through the Citizens Clean Elections Commission from transferring any campaign funds to groups that attempt to influence elections. It will also subject the Commission’s rulemaking procedures to the regulatory oversight that applies to other state agencies.

Opinion One last slap in the face to GCC football These players, coaches and fans deserved so much more if that was the final home football game at Matt O. Hanhila Stadium at Glendale Community College Nov. 3.

After 51 years, barring a change on the Maricopa County Community College Board following Tuesday’s election, GCC football will end after its Nov. 10 game at Scottsdale.

Maricopa County Community College District board announced earlier this year the end for Glendale, Scottsdale, Phoenix and Mesa football programs. Pima Community College decided a few months later to also end football at the end of the year.

But, the final game at home should not have been the mess it was off the field Nov. 3 when the game, scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff, was delayed until nearly 3 p.m. because someone forgot to hire referees to officiate the game.

I arrived about 20 minutes before the scheduled kickoff and walked onto the field to something I have rarely seen that close to the start of a game: no players or coaches on the field.

What was going on, did I read the time wrong?

Talking to fans who were sitting in the stands who came to show support of the kids and program, the reaction was swift.

“Somebody forgot to get referees to officiate the game, there are none here,” Phoenix resident Joan Robinson, sitting in the visiting stands in a Phoenix Bears jersey, said. “This is the next to last game and this says a lot as to what administrators really think about football. What a joke.”

“I cannot believe this is how they are going to send this sport out with an hour and a half delay,” Glendale resident Van Gogalonski said. “If I were the kids and coaches, I would be really angry right now. This is just wrong and us fans who are here to show support, now we have to sit here in the heat and wait. I just don’t understand how you can forget to have refs here.”

Heck, even the cheerleaders, except four from GCC, did not take the time to show up to the game.

Rumors about private meetings and misdoings are related to this reporter. Of course, none can be proven, so I have remained silent on those stories.

But, at the possible end of the sport, there should have been more.

Every former football player should have been invited and showcased, there should have been a parade showcasing the three National Junior College Athletic Association 1988, 2000, and 2005 National Championship teams — and all former coaches should have been introduced.

Instead, we got nearly a two-hour delay with one ref showing up mid-

way through the first quarter and another showing up after the first quarter had ended.

Plus, to top it off, none of the administrators that voted to end the sport had the nerve to show up.

Sad and embarrassing were the only two words that came to mind while watching this game.

The people who made this decision are so enmeshed in their own issues, they don’t realize they are ending opportunities for hundreds to continue their educations.

Having talked to hundreds of community college athletes over the years, and I say athletes because there are rumors that MCCCD will end all athletics in the next year, most have told me if it wasn’t for community college, they would not have had the opportunity to attend college.

As the election comes to a head Nov. 6 (after press-time) the current members of the board up for re-election have shown what they think by not showing up to any of the candidate forums to discuss the issues. Numerous emails and calls from me and other reporters have gone unanswered and they have yet to give clear reasons as to why the decision was made.

The board has been questioned about the transparency of their decision with cost estimates at more than $20 million to maintain the program at the four schools that will be eliminated.

The college district’s 2018-19 budget totals $537,254,929, with an additional $193,805,061 listed for district offices. Athletics total $12,178,728, which represents 1.2 see

Born and raised in Peoria, Funk’s introduction to community theater came early for her. Her parents played in the orchestra, so she gravitated towards the stage nearly a decade ago when she began working at Theater Works as an intern. Over the years, Funk has held a variety of positions, including actor and director. Her love of arts and theater is palpable, especially when she speaks of two programs that she directs: PuppetWorks and AdaptiveWorks.

PuppetWorks shows are performed in the black light style of puppetry that results in wonderful glow-in-the-dark scenery. Aimed to engage our city’s youngest audience members, the setting becomes colorful and magical.

AdaptiveWorks is a program that provides theatrical experiences for individuals with mental and physical disabilities. As Director, Funk takes pride in creating a welcoming environment that

celebrates and compliments individual talents, to ensure everyone has the opportunity to shine.

Although the impact of community theater is vast, programs like these have a unique way of showcasing how empowering the arts can be.

Community theater helps individuals feel connected with one another and part of something larger - elements that are vital for a thriving community. From building community spirit, to teaching life skills such as problem solving, communication, and self-confidence, the impact is far-reaching and often long lasting.

Over the past decade, Theater Works has created exceptional programming that grows and expands with every passing season. Taking notice of their outstanding progress is an organization called AriZoni Awards of Excellence, who work to acknowledge the great work that theaters across the Valley are doing.

At this year’s awards ceremony, and with more than 40 participating theaters and thousands of shows judged, Theater Works shined the brightest with 56 nominations and 12 awards.

Peoria honors John McCain with Memorial dedication Peoria will make a special dedication to the late Sen. John McCain during a Veterans Day ceremony to be held on Nov. 12 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Peoria Veterans Memorial in Rio Vista Community Park.

The Peoria Veterans Memorial was originally built in 2007 during the construction of the Rio Vista Recreation Center. The memorial was re-dedicated

by Mayor Cathy Carlat and Peoria City Council in 2017.

The memorial features notable wartime events engraved on an 88-foot black granite wall, a waterside deck, comfortable seating, shade structures, military branch flag display and the Peoria Honor Wall. The Honor Wall is an important and impactful element of Peoria’s Veterans Memorial, where individuals and families can honor their loved ones who serve or have served in the military. Each honor space includes the veteran’s name, rank, branch, and service years.

Peoria’s mayor and council took formal action naming the Sen. John McCain Vietnam Veterans Memorial Plaza at its Oct. 16 meeting upon recommendation from the Parks and Recreation Board, and with support from the Peoria Veterans Memorial Board.

“Sen. John McCain is an American hero. From his early years as a naval aviator, to the five and a half years tragically spent as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, the senator devoted his entire life to the service of our great nation,” Mayor Cathy Carlat said. “His story is one of unwavering patriotism and tremendous resilience, and we are proud to honor his legacy - and all Vietnam veterans - at this meaningful memorial.”

Sirens around Palo Verde Power Plant to be tested

The Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station will be testing the siren system Nov. 14. All active sirens within the 10-mile area surrounding the plant are tested annually to ensure proper operation.

Officials will activate the sirens twice. The first test will be at approximately noon and the second test will be at approximately 12:30 p.m.

There is no need for concern; this will only be a test. Individuals with questions about the test or any other emergency preparedness activities can call Travis Icard at 623-393-6128.

Unofficial tally shows PUSD bond proposal denied

Peoria Unified School District’s $189.2 million school bond proposal was losing as voters spoke loudly for the second election in a row as they appeared to deny the PUSD bond request.

One incumbent and one newcomer won election to the PUSD Governing Board and three incumbents to the Governing Board of the Maricopa County Community College District were all re-elected.

The totals are unofficial and were taken from the Maricopa County Recorder’s election web page.

After narrowly missing getting a bond on the 2017 ballot, the Governing Board placed the $189.2 million bond on this year’s ballot and it appears voters unofficially denied it with a 55-45 vote against approval. It was the second time in two years voters have denied a bond in PUSD. In November of 2016, voters denied a $198 million bond by a

19 percent margin. It was the first time a PUSD bond had failed since before 2003. “We are cautiously optimistic. While we recognize that it would very difficult to overcome this deficit, there are still hundreds of thousands of ballots left to count,� PUSD spokesperson Danielle Airey said. “We will diligently watch for

If the bond were approved, it would have kept the bond tax rate at or below $1.60 (per $100 assessed valuation) and would have funded facility modernization, land purchase and new construction for student growth, technology, arts education, career and technical educa-

Here’s a thought. Maybe we take $20 million from the district offices budget and keep athletics and improve the facilities. Heck, let’s take $50 million from the district offices and really make sports relevant at the community college level.

The board also estimated that, “ongoing costs to maintain the football programs could exceed $20 million in needed capital improvements and associated expenses.�

But that point was also questioned when it was announced in an email by GCC President Teresa Leyba Ruiz, that Matt O. Hanhila Stadium alone, “is in dire need of repair and would exceed $23 million to bring into compliance and repair of various plumbing problems and upgrades.�

In the Governing Board election, Beverly Pingerelli was re-elected and Cory Underhill came out ahead of Davita Solter and Michael James Gard to grab a seat on the board for a four-year term.

Pingerelli garnered 34 percent while Underhill had 25 percent of the vote.

Solter (22 percent) and Gard (20) came up just short. “I am very excited to serve the community for another four years,� Pingerelli said. “I want to thank everyone who voted, no matter who they voted for, and see

stadium, I asked how much it would cost to rebuild the stadium as is without specifics.

The answered ranged from $5 million to $15 million for a basic stadium to be rebuilt.

So where does MCCCD come up with $20 million for capital improvements and Ruiz says GCC’s stadium is up to $23 million alone?

But issues are not just at GCC. Pima’s football team, which was scheduled to travel to Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, Nov. 3 for its game, had to scramble after head coach Jim Monoco found out that a $6,800 non-refundable deposit on airline tickets earlier this year was lost when it was not paid in full by the school.

All of this, combined with the lack of respect for what could be the final football game held at GCC, and it all adds up as one last slap in the face from the board to everyone who coached, played or attended one of the team’s games over the 51 years of its existence.

Pingerelli said she feels the main issue the board may be faced with is the denial of the bond by voters.

“I assume the failure of the bond is going to come up and be a tremendous discussion for us,” Pingerelli said. “Administration is going to have to bring forward a recommendation and we will have to consider what they bring us and

we will potentially have to have a study session and see what they say.”

Maricopa County Community College District Governing Board had three seats up for election with each incumbent winning re-election by large margins.

Kathleen Winn defeated Roc Arnett with 62 percent of the vote for the at-large bid; Marie Sullivan defeated two challengers with 49 percent of the vote in District 3; and Jean McGrath topped Stan Arterberry with 63 percent in District 4.

Centennial High School winner of Fulton Homes Noon Salute Program Centennial High School’s Bel Canto Choir has been recognized as one of the best music programs in the Valley after being named as the first winner of this year’s Fulton Homes’ Noon Salute program. Under the direction of Cheryl Tucker, the Bel Canto Choir will receive a $1,000 check from the Tempebased home builder.

The words Bel Canto mean “beautiful singing.” Bel Canto Choir is the top “varsity” ensemble at Centennial High School. This group consists of 26 singers who do a variety of music and touring throughout the school year. Along with the four school concerts they hold a year, Bel Canto also sings at hospitals, retirement homes, festivals, competitions, and other community functions. To be in this audition-only group you have to not only be talented at singing but have good leadership skills, motivation, and a positive attitude. The check presentation took place Nov. 5 at Centennial High School, 143888 N. 79th Ave., Peoria.

For the eighth consecutive year, Fulton Homes has partnered with 94.5 KOOL FM for

its popular Noon Salute program. Noon Salute recognizes local middle school and high school music programs that submit their rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner.” Each week a winner is chosen to have their performance played on KOOL FM at noon each day.

At the end of each month, one of the weekly winners will be awarded a $1,000 check from Fulton Homes.

Additionally, each band’s performance will be available at https://kool.radio.com/contest/fulton-homes-noon-salute for others to listen to.

The program was created to recognize and reward middle and high school musicians and their hard work and dedication to their musical studies, as well as teachers and band directors who develop their musical talents.

Scouting takes hold with youth behind bars

Adobe Mountain Boy Scout Troop 4, Grand Canyon Council, is like any other Boy Scout troop - Scouts earn badges, learn life skills and make new friends. The only difference is the troop is inside Adobe Mountain School which is operated by the Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections. Nancy Welton, 62, has been a Scout leader since 2005. In 2007, she founded the troop at Adobe Mountain to help boys ages 14 to 17 through a difficult time in their lives. She said she never anticipated she would still

be involved 11 years later.

Her husband, Chris Welton, is an assistant scoutmaster and so is her son, Cody Welton. An additional five assistant scoutmasters also help out.

But more volunteer help is needed.

“Anything on the other side of the fence is called the Outs,” Welton said.

“People on the Outs are welcome to come in and help these kids learn new skills and confidence. Leadership and duty to God is also a component of scouting. Not one religion — it’s a nonsectarian organization. We open and close each meeting with a prayer, and I’m never lacking for kids to say

The scouting program celebrated its 10th anniversary in August.

“It’s a phenomenal program being recognized across the country and we’re very proud of that,” Welton said.

Troop 4 was the first Boy Scout Troop in the U.S. to go behind bars, metaphorically speaking. The model is working well and now other Scouting Councils across the country are trying out or considering similar programs to reach boys who might not have ever had an opportunity to participate in scouting.

To date, Troop 4 in Phoenix has served more than 300 young men.

The average stay at Adobe Mountain School is six to eight months. Troop 4 can take up to eight Scouts at a time.

They meet weekly and participate in many of the same merit badges all scouts do and from time to time, they camp overnight on the facility’s athletic field, and occasionally are allowed to go on hikes or attend special events on approved furloughs with Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections security present.

Welton said she spends about eight hours a week volunteering her time with scouting. She fell into her role in 2007, she said, “Because, quite honestly, no one else wanted to take the job.”

She was a proud mother of two Eagle Scouts and knew what an important role scouting played in her children’s lives.

Troop 4 has a need for volunteers.

They need adults over 21 years old to serve as a scout leader, volunteer as a merit badge counselor or sit on the troop committee.

All permanent volunteers must be fingerprinted, go through a comprehensive background check and take a drug test.

Welton said, “I love helping at risk youth. These boys are mostly respectful and kind. Scouting is providing an environment for them to grow and succeed. It’s really rewarding to see them turn their lives around.”

Scouting also gives the boys a chance to become boys again, Welton said. “They’ve been arrested, in the back of police cars. Scouting allows them to rediscover fun, go to the Outs

Welton emphasized that there are no boys with violent crime backgrounds in the Scouting program.

Volunteers do not have to wear a uniform or go through the scout program. “You can be in business, be in communications,” Welton said.

Peoria FFA Chapter wins bronze at Nationals

The 91st annual National FFA Convention was held Oct. 22 to 26 for more than 67,000 attendees, and the Peoria FFA Chapter was in attendance.

The National FFA Convention is the showpiece for the 670,000 members nationally. Peoria FFA’s state winning Agricultural Sales Career Development Event (CDE) Team represented Arizona in competition and a member of Peoria FFA received their American FFA Degree.

The Ag Sales team, consisting of Alexus Thompson, Taylor Thompson, Calista Thoma, and Joshua Williams, competed against the other 49 state winners. Their CDE coach and FFA Advisor, Kelli Wilson, worked with the team members since November of last year on the contest. The event includes actual sales presentations, a written

Former Peoria FFA member, Jacob Kaltenbach, was also in Indianapolis during the week to receive his American FFA Degree. The American FFA Degree is the highest award or degree achievable in the National FFA Organization and is awarded to less than 1 percent of the members every year. To be eligible to receive the American FFA Degree, members must have earned $10,000 or worked 2,250 hours within their Supervised Agricultural Experience (type of work-based learning), received their State FFA Degree, performed 50 hours of community service, and various tasks demonstrating leadership abilities. The American Degree can only be won by students after high school graduation.

The Peoria FFA Chapter has operated since 1929. Its purpose is to provide students with opportunities for developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. It is the oldest and one of the largest Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO) in all of Arizona.

Students of the Month share lives and dreams

Three high school seniors from Ironwood, Peoria and Centennial high schools shared their personal histories and plans for the future during a Peoria Rotary Club breakfast meeting Nov. 2. Derek Talbot, Rachel Martinez and Murphy Kaphing were honored as their high schools’ November 2018 Students of the Month by Peoria Rotary.

Derek is enrolled in Ironwood’s International Baccalaureate program.

After graduation, he plans to enroll at Arizona State University West campus and major in biotechnology.

Chris Kuczka, Derek’s teacher at Ironwood, said he has a “learner’s profile.”

“When I think of Derek, I think of very modest, extremely intelligent, second in his class. He fits the ‘learner’s profile’ so perfectly. He’s there to help people.”

Derek played baseball his first two years of high school. He’s treasurer of the Art Club and every other Friday, he and others have a Bob Ross paint-along.

He’s a member of the Culture Club and was selected as a delegate to Arizona Boys State this past summer.

Does he paint?

Derek replied, “I’m very good in colored pencil.”

Rachel said she enjoys trying to help others, motivating them. She started tutoring students in her class, then began helping others five days a week.

“Helping students grow,” is how she described her tutoring sessions.

Her community service activities include helping find bikes for about 100 youngsters.

Rachel plans to attend Northern Arizona University and earn a degree in nursing, with a focus on neonatal care.

“I want to help babies when they are young and sick,” Rachel said.

She attended Peoria Elementary School from first through eighth grade, has played soccer for 11 years and recently started playing golf.

Barb Parrish, Murphy’s teacher at Centennial, described Murphy by saying, “There are a few students who crawl into your heart and camp there.

She’s one of the brightest minds out there, very humble, a natural leader. As Occupational Students of America president, she’s every adviser’s dream.”

Murphy is a member of National Honor Society and Math Society, who hopes to start her first semester of college next year at Boston University. She devoted several minutes to explaining what OSA does.

“It’s student run,” she said, by students who wish to become quality, compassionate health professionals.

One of the service projects performed

by OSA students is the Innocence Project. They gather donated shoes, puzzles, socks and toothpaste, wrap them up and gift wrap them, then take them to senior residents at Amethyst Gardens at 91st Avenue and Union Hills Drive.

Another project is coordinating a blood drive.

Murphy’s goal is to become a pediatric physician. She volunteers in the

medical tech department at Banner Boswell. She talked about what he has learned through community service and volunteering.

“People are not powerless,” she said.

She has also observed “how giving

some people are” and the importance of “sharing oneself.”

“We need to have a drive and passion to help others — find true compassion and empathy for others; see the world through a larger lens than ourselves,” she said.

American Legion Unit 62 Post, Auxiliary hold Veterans Day observance The official cessation of World War I hostilities between the U.S. and Germany was at 11 a.m. Nov. 11, 1918 — The 11th month, 11th day, 11th hour. Now, 100 years later, the public is invited to join American Legion Post 62 to commemorate the “War to end all Wars.”

The event will include participation in the “Bells of Peace: A World War

One Remembrance.” The nationwide program is designed to honor the 4.7 million American men and women who served 100 years ago during World War I, especially the 116,516 who died.

Attendees at Post 62 on Veteran’s Day will each receive a bell to ring at 11 a.m., along with bells ringing across the country at 11 a.m. local time.

Attendees will also receive a symbol originated from World War I and designed to honor service members who died in service to their country: the poppy.

Peoria resident, Bob Mrkvicka, former Section Leader of the U.S. Academy Band at West Point, will perform “Taps,” “Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America” on his flute.

“Taps” is America’s “National Song of Remembrance.” The performance of “Taps” is also occurring across the country that morning. Similarly, its counterpart, “Last Post,” will be performed in the United Kingdom, Canada,

Australia, and New Zealand.

Post 62 Color Guard will conduct a flag-raising ceremony.

The event will be live streamed by the Peoria Student Broadcast Network from Centennial High School.

Following the commemoration, there will be a potluck dinner and entertainment. The post will provide burgers and hot dogs and asks that members bring a dish to share.

When Luke Air Force Base was chosen to house the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Program, it was the culmination of a groundswell of support from leaders in the local community. Years later, that support remains strong and continues to grow.

Over the past several months, WESTMARC, the public-private partnership of 15 communities and businesses in the West Valley of Greater Phoenix, sponsored an elected official pledge that reaffirms that support, and the response was overwhelming.

“County supervisors, mayors, state legislators, and councilmembers from across the West Valley were so happy to sign the pledge,” said WESTMARC CEO Sintra Hoffman. We compiled them and are sharing them with Congresswoman Debbie Lesko to show her

how strong the West Valley remains in its support of Luke Air Force base and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.”

While Congresswoman Lesko was not in Congress when the F-35 was awarded to Luke Air Force Base, she has long been a steadfast supporter of the program. She signed several resolutions during her time at the state legislature that supported the program and its ongoing mission at Luke. As a member of Congress, she’s continued her vocal support of the program as well as voting for the funding of the jets.

“Luke Air Force Base is the largest F-35 operating base in the world. It currently hosts 76 F-35s and is on its way to a total of 144,” said Lesko. “But in addition to that, it has such a large economic impact on our community. It provides for thousands of jobs, all working and participating to keep our country and world a safer place.”

PTSD Foundation/Camp Hope opens Arizona chapter The PTSD Foundation of American is known for providing hope and healing for the unseen wounds of war. According to a VA study in 2015, 20.6 veterans a day with PTSD commit suicide nationwide. To combat this statistic, the PTSD Foundation became “boots on the ground” in Houston, Texas in 2009 to help military veterans afflicted by posttraumatic stress disorder. By 2012, Camp Hope was built to house, serve and protect veterans suffering with PTSD. Today, the PTSD Foundation of America has 13 national chapters, 53 groups and 500-plus attendees weekly outside of the Houston area. On Oct. 30, the PTSD Foundation of America hosted the inaugural Warrior Group meeting in Phoenix to begin the Arizona chapter. The meeting was held at the Blue Steel Security office, 2320 W. Peoria Ave. in Phoenix.

Camp Hope, knows all too well the impact of veteran suicide. Her son, Robert M. Graves, took his life on Memorial Day, 2017.

“By the time we realized the depth of Robbie’s illness, it was too late. We did our best to get him to Camp Hope, unfortunately we ran out of time. He slipped through the cracks and became one of 20 a day that takes their life,” Shields said.

Since her son’s untimely death, Shields has been a key component to bringing the PTSD Foundation to Phoenix.

Shields said, “The aftermath of Robbie’s death has been nothing short of devastating. It is heartbreaking to think that his 5-year-old son, Michael, will never know the great man that Robbie was. My hopes and goals for the future is to prevent another veteran suicide triggered by PTSD, and another family to feel pain of this magnitude, death by suicide changes everyone, and everything”.

1st Veterans Day Walk Up

In addition to the inaugural Warrior group meeting in Phoenix, Sinful Skin Tattoo & Piercing is hosting the 1st Veterans Day Walk Up to benefit the PTSD Foundation of America. The PTSD Foundation of America opened Camp Hope in May 2012.

Camp Hope is a six-month peer-to-peer program completely free to veterans to help them with their issues with combatrelated PTSD and resulting conditions.

The staff is comprised of alumni of the program, “who have been there and done that,” and can speak to other combat veterans through experience-based mentoring.

Don’t put too much weight on first impressions

When I first became a judge for the Manistee Justice Court, my mom attended the ceremony in which I was sworn in. This is referred to as “The Investiture Ceremony.” It is a formal ceremony in which a judge swears his or her oath to the office that he or she now holds.

As all of you know, judges traditionally wear black robes. I am no exception. During the ceremony, I put on my robe for the first time. The robe serves several purposes; it immediately identifies me as the judge in a courtroom setting. Personally, it also reminds me of the responsibility I have to the citizens

Personally I’ve never been fond of first impressions because they are usually wrong. All of us have good days and bad days. I am sure you don’t want people to make permanent opinions about you if you just happen to have a bad day. Give that person an opportunity to disprove (or prove) your initial impression.

Religion Things are changing and they’re changing fast In the era when commuters routinely traveled by train, a businessman en route to an important meeting asked a porter to make sure he got off the train at five o’clock in the morning. Imagine how he felt when he woke up at nine o’clock in the morning, miles past his destination.

Furiously, he ripped into the porter and he didn’t mince words.

“That’s one angry man,” remarked a passenger who overheard the tirade.

“If you think he was angry,” the porter said, “You should have seen the guy I put off the train at five o’clock this morning.”

Now, there’s a story for you. Some will laugh, and some will cry, depending on whether they were the player or the audience.

Dr. James Comer of Yale Medical School observes, “We have a sense the world’s closing in on us, that there are too many people around, and that we’re getting ripped off. We feel powerless about our problems and we explode in frustration.”

Sound familiar? Currently, many things seem, well, out of control. It feels like we are on a never-ending emo-

tional roller coaster ride of elections, the economy, problems in relationships, decreasing confidence, political polarization, violence and increased family needs and concerns.

Things are changing, and things are changing fast. No one really knows where all of this is going. We are losing our trust in anyone and anything. With all of this going on we can lose the mental and emotional ability to process what is going on around us and get frustrated or angry, start to hate, throw up our hands, then check out or act out.

Maybe God is trying to say something to us in these troubling, frustrating times. Maybe God wants to show us His power to you personally in your problem as a person or in our country’s problems.

Here’s the truth and it’s not fake news.

Whether we like it or not, God is still in control. Just ask Job. He was the guy in the Bible who invented Murphy’s Law. I think he may have invented the roller coaster, too. Job lost it all and but got it all back in the end.

Maybe this is the time that God has been waiting for to get our attention to show us our need of a source and a

Jesus calmed storms on the outside of people and He calms storms on the inside of

people, too.

Here’s some ancient wisdom from the Bible you can depend on in these frustrating or angry times. No, if’s, and’s or but’s about it ... it’s true and it works.

“Take the old prophets as your mentors. They put up with anything, went through everything, and never once quit, all the time honoring God. What a gift life is to those who stay on course.

You’ve heard of Job’s staying power, and you know how God brought it all together at the end. That’s because God cares, cares right down to the last detail.” James 5:10,11.

Consider this. It takes a problem to have a miracle. In other words, if you have a problem or dilemma, you are a candidate for a miracle. If your country has a problem, it is a candidate for a miracle. Miracles are God’s business.

I’m not sticking my head in the sand. I’d rather believe God because I don’t like the other alternatives.

As the Glendale Community College volleyball team prepared for the Arizona Community College Regional tournament, head coach Lisa Stuck announced the signing of two high school players with letters of intent to play for the Gauchos next season.

“This is one of the biggest decisions they will make and my hope for them is that when they are done and ready to move, in their heart they would hope that GCC is a four-year school because of the fun they will have,” Stuck said. “We want to compete and win, but we also want them to enjoy their time here, because it will go fast.”

before losing to Gilbert Highland 3-1, finished her high school career with 227 kills and 361 digs.

Stuck said both girls were recruited for the same reason she has recruited during her 21 years at GCC. “I have coached both of them in club ball and had a good amount of time with both of them and I like both kids’ competitiveness and drive,” Stuck said. “These two are the type of kids I kind of gravitate towards and they will be great additions to our team.”

Stuck said while both girls will have to earn their spots, both have the chance to be key contributors next season.

“I make no promises to kids; they know they will have to compete and I think you need that and it makes a healthy environment,” Stuck said.

“We lose eight players (to graduation), but these two have the talent and work ethic to contribute next season.”

Stuck added that she has more recruits she is working to sign and hopes to announce more signings soon.

Maricopa County Community College District announced Feb. 5 that 2018 would be the final season of football at GCC, Scottsdale, Mesa and Phoenix, with Pima announcing later in the year they would also end their program at the end of the season.

“A difficult decision has been reached regarding the MCCCD football program; we will eliminate football following the upcoming 2018 season as a MCCCD sponsored sport,” Glendale Community College President Teresa Leyba Ruiz said in February.

Thousands of former players and coaches have been fighting to save the program, hoping the Nov. 6 election results would change the direction with four MCCCD board seats up for election.

“This doesn’t feel like the final game, it feels like just another game,” Peoria resident and former student at Phoenix College Daniel Davidson said. “I came because I wanted to support these kids and thought they would at least mention the former teams or players and they did nothing. It makes no sense and shows what they really think of these kids.”

Glendale defeated Phoenix 52-28 and will play its final game 1 p.m. Nov. 10 at Scottsdale Community College.

Seton Catholic upsets Peoria 54-49 in 4A first round

Entering the 4A playoffs as the No. 13 seed, Chandler Seton Catholic head football coach Mike Chiurco knew his team faced a tough test Nov. 2 in the first round but the Sentinels were able to hang on in the final seconds to pull out a 54-49 upset win over No. 4 Peoria at Peoria High School.

“I am not even sure what to say about that game,” Chiurco said. “(Peoria) is a great team and we knew we had a tough test ahead of us, but if you told me it would take over 50 points to win, I wouldn’t have believed you.”

Seton Catholic quarterback Vincent Wallace completed 22 of 36 passes for 372 yards and four touchdown passes, with the game-winner on a busted play in the final minute. “(Wallace) is really good and their coaching staff had a great game plan and they came out and gave us some fits on defense early,” Peoria head coach Will Babb said. “They were physical for a while and we struggled with that early.”

Wallace took a snap and rolled to his left, unable to find an open receiver, when he lofted a pass to the back of the end zone where Colten Christiensen leaped up and pulled the ball down for the winning score with 29 seconds left in the game.

“The play broke down and my first and second reads were not there and then noticed Christiensen in the end zone and he made the play,” Wallace said. “We just keep going and made the plays when we needed them and we just played with a passion and the seniors did not want this to be our last game.”

Peoria had a chance late, getting the ball at their own 24-yard line with 24 seconds left in the game. Peoria quarterback Kyle Samford threw a short pass to Jovon Scott, who pitched the ball to Juwaun Price. Price than ran 19 yards to the 43-yard line with nine seconds left in the game.

outside, cut up the middle and nearly scored, but two penalties on the Panthers sealed the victory for the Sentinels.

“We made too many mistakes at the wrong times and kind of shot ourselves in the foot,” Babb said. “(Wallace) is a great quarterback and made some great plays for them when they needed them.”

Leading 31-28 at halftime, Seton Catholic took the second-half opening drive and marched 59 yards on 13 plays, but was held to a 31-yard field goal by Dominic Constentino.

Peoria would strike quickly, when, on their first play from scrimmage, Malachi Potee took a handoff and raced 47 yards for a touchdown to give Peoria the lead 35-34.

“Inevitable that we got in a situation, and I am not sure how many plays we had in the second half, but they started and took like six or seven minutes off the clock,” Babb said.

Peoria was held to three offensive plays in the third quarter as Seton Catholic controlled the time, ran 24 plays and held the ball for 11:12 of the quarter.

“The hard thing is we scored, and scored quickly, but when you only run a few plays in the quarter, which we did, it makes it hard on your defense,” Babb said “We needed to score 55 and we scored 49. If you had told me we would score 49 points and lose, I would have called you a liar.”

Christiensen caught seven passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns and Michael Kenney also caught seven passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns in the win. The Sentinels had 596 total yards (372 passing, 224 rushing) while Peoria totaled 476 total yards in the loss (354 rushing, 122 passing). “(Wallace) is a special kid and I think he is the most underrated quarterback

around,” Chiurco said. “He has thrown for over 2,000 yards and 21 touchdowns before tonight and we wouldn’t be here if not for him,” Van bruwaene rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown and Wallace added 99 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Sentinels.

Potee rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns and Price added 154 yards and two touchdowns for the Panthers.

Samford connected on six of nine passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns and Scott caught four passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns.

“This is a great group of kids and great players and, honestly, what makes it harder is I really thought these kids could make a run in the playoffs,” Babb said.

Peoria finishes the season 9-2 while Seton Catholic (8-3) advances to the quarterfinals to play No. 5 Tucson Sahuaro (9-2) 7 p.m. Nov. 9 at Sahuaro High School.
