Man missing en route to Peoria found dead

A New Mexico man who went missing while headed to Peoria for a job in early July was recently found dead, according to authorities.

And the men who used his credit cards multiple times over the weekend following his disappearance have been identified, but eliminated as suspects. Now, two other suspects are being considered.

Coconino and Navajo county detectives located the body of Craig Cavanaugh, 44, in a wooded area just off Highway 260 outside Heber on August 5, according to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office. His body wasn’t identified until fingerprints

could be completed more than three weeks later.

“It is with extreme sadness and heartbreak that we announce to you that Craig Cavanaugh was found deceased,” his family wrote in a statement posted to Help Find Craig Cavanaugh, a Facebook page set up in the wake of his disappearance.

“He was a beloved father of two daughters, Micaylah and Gracie, a loving son, devoted fiancé, nephew, cousin and friend.

Since he went missing on July 4th, we prayed everyday for a different ending and we are completely devastated to learn this news.”

Cavanaugh was last seen in Farmington on July 4, according to CCSO. He was headed to Peoria for a job but never

The Facebook page dedicated to his search reported that his iPhone’s last known location had been traced to the Mazatzal Hotel and Casino parking lot in Payson at 1:39 p.m. July 4.

“After this, all communication ended, which is extremely out of the ordinary for him,” a moderator posted July 9. “He was supposed to be home Thursday night/early Friday morning to leave for a Fourth of July vacation for the weekend.”

Farmington, New Mexico, police said a witness reported seeing Cavanaugh in Payson, but no evidence backed up the claim.

A Peoria man and a Tucson man were recently convicted for selling heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine on the dark web, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.

Silvester Ruelas of Peoria and Kevin Dean McCoy of Tucson were among those who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and launder proceeds from drug distribution. Two women, Peggy Gomez and Amber Worrell, also pleaded guilty to the crimes.

Peoria, conservation group partner to protect water supplies

The city of Peoria has entered into an agreement with The Nature Conservancy, an international nonprofit conservation group, to protect river flows and water quality in the Salt and Verde rivers.

Through the agreement, the city of Peoria will provide a $30,000 grant to The Nature Conservancy for three years. Then, Peoria can opt into an additional two years.

The partnership is part of a program formed by The Nature Conservancy entitled the Salt and Verde Alliance, which aims to reduce risk to water supplies. Through the program, the nonprofit partners with cities like Phoenix, Glendale and Tempe, as well as businesses and others who rely on the Salt and Verde rivers.

The partnership marks the first between The Nature Conservancy and the city of Peoria. The goal is to protect water provided by the Salt and Verde rivers, which flows through Salt River Project canals to the Greenway Water Treatment Plant in Peoria.

“The quality of that water is important. The consistency of it’s important and the makeup of it staying consistent is important because that affects what we have to do to treat it, to deliver it to our customers,” said Cape Powers, Peoria’s water service director.

“If you have spikes in water quality or changes in water quality, it’s not that we can’t handle it, but there’s certainly cost impacts to it and it can have sort of unforeseen consequences. That’s what we’re trying to avoid.”

According to Verde River Director Kim Schonek, The Nature Conservancy seeks investments as well as encourages sacrifices in terms of water conservation from communities that rely on the water.

“There’s 10 cities in the Phoenix Metro area that rely on water from the Salt and Verde rivers. So we partner with those cities, including Phoenix and Peoria, to provide funding to invest in these watershed projects,” explained Schonek, who noted this is the second year of involvement from the city of Phoenix.

According to a recent Peoria city

council agenda, “projects could include forest thinning, participation in water-offset programs to increase in-stream flows, and improving water quality by reducing the chemicals and organic matter returned to the river through irrigation runoff.”

Expanding on those potential uses, Schonek said the Salt and Verde Alliance ultimately emphasizes two components: protecting forests and working with rural communities on agricultural improvement.

The latter includes soliciting investments from communities that require water, but also encouraging them to be water-efficient and work together to solve potential water issues. Modernization of equipment is also important, Schonek said.

Protecting forests, on the other hand, includes forest thinning. High-density trees can lead to an increased risk of wildfire, which, in turn, can increase treatment costs and reduce storage capacities in reservoirs, Schonek said.

This is because wildfires can send debris into streams, according to Powers, potentially changing water chem-

istry and causing blockages. For this reason, Powers called this the “most exciting” possible use of funds to the city of Peoria.

“That’s what we’re really trying to avoid,” Powers said. “We don’t want streams clogged, plugged. We want the natural environment to do as much of the water treatment as we can have it do. And maintaining a healthy forest is all part of that process and part of that system.”

However, The Nature Conservancy will ultimately provide city officials an annual written technical report outlining how exactly the funds were used.

The city can discontinue the partnership at any point.

But Schonek emphasized the issues aren’t urgent.

“This is really looking forward,” Schonek said.

“It’s not serving a short-term water crisis. This isn’t that sort of challenge, which again, makes it very difficult to convey. It’s really about, ‘How do we work as a watershed to be as efficient as possible so that when we have shortages we can address them?’”

NVC launches new transit service

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF In addition to various programs already offered, Northwest Valley Connect has launched yet another alternative transit option for West Valley residents.

The service, “Taxi Connect Easy,” is available of seniors, ages 65 and older; veterans; and disabled persons who like the convenience of using Uber or Lyft for same-day services or advance requests.

The benefit to riders is the offering of NVC Transportation Manager’s know-how while scheduling a Lyft or Uber ride, monitoring the trip and assuring safety for the service. The service costs $4 per trip. As Lyft charges approximately $10 for five miles, this means NVC would charge $4 above Lyft.

During five years of operations, NVC volunteers and transportation staff have put forth distinguished effort to advocate, facilitate and coordinate accommodating safe transportation resources for riders, thereby promoting quality of life among residents seeking transit services.

Transportation provides a vital lifeline for people without access to transport. Limited access to public transportation in the West Valley is well-documented, causing a burden for residents dependent on fragmented services such as Dial-a-Ride/Ride Choice, taxies, Lyft, Uber and NVC Volunteer Ride-Connect.

The following programs are offered

by NVC: • NVC Mobility Volunteer arranges alternative services to public transit.

Volunteers make every attempt in response to ride requests through the Call-Click-Connect Mobility Center. The center helps people identify available options for their transit needs.

• NVC Ride-Connect is a free volunteer driver program that offers rides and door-through-door services to seniors when there are no available services to meet the need.

• NVC Group-Connect is for social trips for seniors. It provides group trips to malls, movies, games and other social outings. Charging riders a round-trip price that may be as low as $10.

(free) program for those who qualify by living in Sun City West and are under 150% of the poverty level.

Following Cavanaugh’s Fourth of July disappearance, three men used his credit cards to purchase numerous items at several Valley stores between July 5 and July 7, according to CCSO. Previous reports stated it was two men.

Farmington police spokeswoman Georgette Allen previously told Peoria Times the cards were used at a Home Depot and a Dillard’s in Glendale. The men also attempted to use them at a Maverik in Payson and a QuikTrip in Peoria, she added.

The men were eventually identified, but they were eliminated as suspects, according to CCSO. Their identities have not been revealed publicly.

On July 12 authorities in New Mexico located the 2012 Toyota Tacoma Cavanaugh had been driving.

According to CCSO, Farmington detectives later received a “vague” tip that Cavanaugh might be in the Woods Canyon Lake area outside Forest Lakes. Detectives notified CCSO, whose deputies alongside a searchand-rescue unit combed the area. Cavanaugh was not found.

After the three men who used Cavanaugh’s cards were identified and eliminated as suspects, detectives then identified two suspects who they believed to be with Cavanaugh in Payson the day of his disappearance. CCSO detectives found and interviewed one suspect, who provided information that ultimately helped them find Cavanaugh’s body outside Heber.

Farmington detectives have turned the case over to the Coconino and Navajo county sheriff’s offices, both of which assisted in the search.

According to Bailey’s office, the group known as “Iceman21” obtained a Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl XL ring; numerous gold, silver and platinum bars; and an extensive collection of firearms from their illegal activity. Law enforcement confiscated those items.

The DEA, Homeland Security Investigations, Internal Revenue Service — Criminal Investigations and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service were involved in the investigation. They were assisted by the Scottsdale, Mesa and Peoria police departments as part of an operation supported by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force.

“This investigation once again showcases the excellent collaboration between the United States Postal Inspection Service and other law enforcement agencies,” said Jessica Wagner, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service’s acting inspector in charge.

“Through these partnerships, we continue working to keep our communities safe from the spread of illegal narcotics purchased through the dark web. We continue to challenge the anonymous nature of the dark web, proving time and again you are never truly anonymous.”

Between 2015 and 2017, Ruelas, McCoy, Gomez and Worrell used the U.S. Postal System to distribute those drugs from Phoenix to other locations around the country. The U.S. Postal System found parcels containing the drugs headed for Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Texas.

To conceal their crimes, the group “used encrypted technology, sold cryptocurrency through peer-to-peer exchangers and created bank accounts for nonexistent businesses,” according to Bailey’s office.

“Drug traffickers using the dark web feel a sense of security with the anonymity to sell their poisons throughout the world,” added Doug Coleman, special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration in Arizona. “This

Somos Peoria

From 2 to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, there will be live performances by El Chicano, Brenton Wood and The Latin Breed at Somos Peoria in Old Town Peoria. El Chicano, the festival’s headlining act, is a premier Latino rock and funk band founded in East Los Angeles in 1970. The group has recorded 12 studio albums and earned five gold records.

Festivalgoers will also get the chance to sample a variety of local, traditional foods, beer and margaritas; shop arts and crafts; and play in the activity zone for both kids and adults.

Pleasant Harbor, the city of Peoria and Dillon’s Bayou will host the first annual Peoria Country Music Fest from 2 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Octoctober 19, at Lake Pleasant. The festival will feature live country music, food trucks, a beer garden serving a variety of adult beverages, bull riding, a cigar lounge, cornhole and access to water activities on the lake.

Be prepared, not scared

National Preparedness Month, recognized each September, is an opportunity to learn how to prepare for disasters and plan for an emergency. This NPM will focus on planning, with an overarching theme of “Prepared, Not Scared.”

Dam Cancer Run/Walk returning to Lake Pleasant

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF Pleasant Harbor and Evofit will host the annual Dam Cancer Run/Walk at Lake Pleasant on October 12.

The event will feature 5K, 10K and obstacle runs as well as a 5K walk. All running events will traverse the New Waddell Dam. Closed to the public throughout the year, this event provides runners a unique opportunity and vantage point of Lake Pleasant, 440 feet above the New Waddell Dam’s foundation.

“This is a rare treat for race participants,” said Deneen Ramirez, event coordinator at Pleasant Harbor RV Resort & Marina. “The dam is not regularly open to the public and the views are spectacular.”

In the 5K and 10K races, the top three male and female finishers will be awarded medals, as well as the top three winners of the obstacle run. No awards will be presented in the 5K walk.

The 5K run, which costs $45, will begin at 8 a.m. It will be preceded by

a 10K run, costing $55, at 7 a.m.

Subsequent are an obstacle run, $55, at 8:10 a.m.; and a 5K walk, $20, also at 8:10 a.m.

Age categories are set for: 17 and younger, 18 to 26, 27 to 35, 45 to 53, and 54 and older.

In addition to the various running events, participants will receive swag bags and will be greeted at the finish line to music, a classic car show and local vendors. Man allegedly denies having child after leaving son in parked car

long the child was in the car, though he was treated by the fire department and taken to a hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

Gonzalez was arrested around 2:08 a.m. that morning and booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on one count of child abuse and two counts of endangerment.

According to police, the investigation is ongoing, and charges can be added, dropped or changed.

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF A Peoria man was recently arrested after he allegedly left his son alone inside a parked car and then denied to police that he even had a son.

According to Peoria police, officers responded to an apartment complex near Olive and 107th avenues around 1:09 a.m. August 26 for a welfare check on a 1-year-old child.

There they found a 1-year-old boy, alert and conscious inside a nonrunning car belonging to Juan Rodriguez Gonzalez, 31. But prior to finding the man’s son, police said Gonzalez denied even having one.

Police said responding officers initially spoke with a woman, who reported the child was hers and that he was with his father.

That’s when officers made contact with Gonzalez and ultimately found the child.

Arpaio bid underscores need for age limits The Rolling Stones played in Glendale last week, and though a friend offered me a ticket, I passed. Don’t get me wrong: The Stones are terrific and by all accounts put on a helluva show.

However, septuagenarian rockers aren’t my thing. The thought of 76-yearold Mick Jagger preening about while bemoaning his inability to “get no girl reaction?”

The jokes write themselves.

In sum, certain professions come with an expiration date after which we ought to gracefully step aside in favor of new blood. Rock stars, porn stars, Starbucks baristas — these jobs favor the young.

The same goes for prizefighting and fighting fires. I don’t care if you compete in Ironman. If I’m trapped in a burning high rise in some awful redo of “Towering Inferno,” please send Crossfit-trained 20- or 30-somethings to the rescue, not anyone inspired to become a first responder by watching “Emergency!” with Randolph Mantooth back in 1972.

Which brings me to Joe Arpaio, 87, again running for Maricopa County

sheriff.

Critics may say Arpaio’s age is the least disqualifying thing about the man once described as “America’s Toughest Sheriff,” but I beg to differ.

Time having passed Arpaio by represents one of the most pathetic things about his run, which he announced late last month. In an interview with another publication, candidate Arpaio talked up his plan to “hit the bars” and “the streets” to get votes from “the Hispanics” and “the blacks.”

Maybe because I’ve known Arpaio for 25 years and have long found him to be a fascinating stew of ego, braggadocio, ignorance and cunning, I read such remarks less as malevolent racism and more as political incorrectness begat by age.

Arpaio simply no longer understands the rules of public discourse in the same way many folks approaching 90

years old can’t operate an iPhone or a smart thermostat. I get that Arpaio’s past has branded him evil in a wide swath of Maricopa County. I don’t mean to apologize for his conduct — much of it was reprehensible — but I continue to see him as less Klan, more clown.

I haven’t caught a rerun of “Bozo the Clown” lately, but that old kiddie show surely hasn’t aged well. Neither do politicians.

Perhaps you haven’t watched the Democratic presidential debates over the past few months, but I’ve paid some attention.

Four decades separate the field’s youngest guns — 37-year-old Mayor Pete Buttigieg and 38-year-old Rep. Tulsi Gabbard — from the eldest of the bunch, former Vice President Joe Biden, 76, and Sen. Bernie Sanders, who turns 78 in early September.

My thought: Candidates at both ends of the age spectrum seem to suffer in

comparison to those in the middle.

Whereas younger candidates feel insufficiently “life smart” to hold the highest office in the land, their elders can come across as detached from the concerns plaguing the 90% of Americans younger than they are.

And yes, I include 73-year-old Donald Trump in this calculus as well.

Our Constitution sets various age limits for the American political process.

We must be 18 to vote, 25 to serve in the House, 30 to serve in the Senate and 35 years old to run for president. Perhaps it’s time to affix an age maximum to run for elected office. I’m thinking 70 years old sounds about right.

Of course, age is an advantage in some professions. Would you take advice from a 24-year-old marriage counselor? Me neither.

I want my attorney to have gray hair and war stories. The same goes for my psychiatrist and my investment advisor. But I prefer my presidents, sheriffs and rock stars to have read about Methuselah, rather than considering him a peer.

Labor Day Editor: Since its earliest days, the labor movement has sought to improve the quality of work life, create workplace democracy and participate in employer/employee decision-making. The many benefits and protections workers enjoy today never existed until unions won them for working people — Social Security, an eight-hour workday and weekends off, overtime pay, safety standards, holiday pay, health and welfare protection, family and medical leave, grievance and arbitration procedures and pension plans.

Organized labor has also served to advance civil rights and human rights.

The dramatic decline in union membership in the recent years — in large part the result of deliberate, effective and often illegal tactics by employers — has a substantial negative impact on the welfare of all American workers. Today, the crisis for unions is a combination of direct threats from Trump’s agenda and politicians who are hostile to the

Your CBD Store brings hemp-derived product to Peoria

Those heavily involved in the everyday operation of Your CBD Store, located at 8240 W. Jefferson Street in Peoria, have deep personal ties to CBD use.

Co-owner Annalee Poureetezadi was introduced to the product when her grandmother ran out of options to treat pain late in life. She turned to CBD upon recommendation from family and friends.

Previously stigmatized as an offshoot of marijuana, CBD, or cannabidiol, is derived from the hemp plant. The products, however, have little or faint amounts of THC, the main component that causes psychoactive effects.

Even still, Poureetezadi’s grandmother — enjoying the product to treat her pain — would become nervous walking into a store, as years back CBD was mostly offered in marijuana dispensaries.

Poureetezadi opened up the Peoria shop in order to help people in need of CBD’s benefits, much like her grandmother, feel comfortable obtaining the product.

“When I saw the opportunity to open up a shop where people don’t have to have a card, and it’s welcoming, and you don’t have to go through all of these things with the state, then I pounced on the idea,” she said.

Store manager Robin Anderson’s

connection to the product is personal as well. She had worked in marijuana dispensaries for years, so she was already exposed to the benefits of CBD and medical cannabis firsthand.

However, she began using the product regularly herself after being hit by a car two years ago. She wanted to avoid opioids for pain medication, and took to CBD because of its functionality and lack of the side effects of other pain meds.

“If I can show people what it did for me, and then it works the same way for them, that makes me really happy,” she said.

The store sells CBD in a variety of forms. The products vary by dosage — higher or lower doses are known to treat different ailments — and method of consumption. From pure oil or candy to dissolvable CBD to put in fluid, there are plenty of methods for those of different needs to utilize the product.

CBD’s popularity is continually growing. Now, the product can be found in area gas stations like Circle K. However, Anderson said consumers can never be certain of the quality of their oil.

“You don’t know what kind of other chemical additives are in there, or what exactly you’re getting. Here, you know it’s all organic and it’s not going to give you effects you don’t want,” Anderson said.

tests. Whether a person’s consumption of their oil will lead to a positive test or not, Poureetezadi said, is dependent upon the type of test the consumer is taking.

Since the oil is, indeed, derived from the hemp plant, certain tests looking for the oil will show up positive.

However, most, she said are looking for THC specifically. Even the CBD products with the slightest trace of CBD — still not enough to get a customer high — should not change the test results.

“We want to make sure everyone is aware of what to look for, so that they can make the right decision for them,” Poureetezadi said.

The store in Peoria hasn’t been open for long. But, Poureetezadi said there has already been a swell of customers excited to have an available store for CBD in the area.

The Poureetezadi family is rooted

in Washington, where Annalee’s parents Shahram and Yariel reside. They are considering expansion, possibly to other parts of Arizona or in their own state. But, for now, Poureetezadi is focused on maintaining a quality store with quality products.

“Honestly we’ve had some really good response from people who have been coming into the store. They’re happy to see that the area is growing, and there’s a store like this in their own neighborhood. It’s all really exciting for us,” she said.

Cobra football brotherhood led by pair of real ones

For Cactus football’s defense, led

by Nate and Nicc Quinones, the word carries a little extra weight. The pair of seniors’ actual brotherhood helps them succeed on the football field.

from a local youth football team ran after them and asked them to play on his team. After putting on pads and hitting for the first time, they were hooked.

“It was cool, and we’ve been teammates ever since,” Nate said, laughing.

Great friends on and off the field, the pair’s communication and work ethic spreads throughout the rest of the Cobras, especially on defense.

“They see how we are always talking, always trying to get better, and then they get at it, too,” Nicc said.

On the field the pair are talented and work tremendously well together, in the form of 132 and 121 tackles from Nate and Nicc, respectively, in 2018.

Those totals were among the state leaders in all of 4A. Nicc also tied for the team lead in interceptions (3) while Nate compiled 10 sacks.

“It’s rare you even get one kid with those kind of numbers in a season, much less two in the same year.

They’re tremendous,” Cactus coach Joseph Ortiz said.

“And it’s not just stats, though. They are an engine for this team because of everything they do.”

Even in succeeding at a violent sport like football, it is rare to see the two fighting or arguing. Their love exceeds any sort of petty squabbles. But they are consistently trying to one-up the

other in a friendly way at every opportunity.

Nate makes a game-changing sack on a crucial drive? He will brag about it to his brother running off the field.

Nicc intercepts a pass? Nate is the first to hear about it.

That banter exists not just on the field, either. The pair often competes in Madden football, as well as comparing grades on school assignments. Life, for the Quinones’, is a constant contest that motivates them to improve on all aspects of life, especially football.

“It helps us get better. I know he’s going to work hard, and he knows I am.

So it pushes us,” Nicc said.

The Quinones brothers hope to play college football together after graduation. If they keep up their production, it is hard to see it playing out any other way. But, for the rest of 2019, both Nate and Nicc are focused on their final high school football season, which opened with a 13-0 victory over Catalina foothills August 30. Led by the pair, the Cactus defense has high potential.

“We’ve got a lot of young guys — (we’re) even starting a freshman — but then some guys with experience like us that have been here a long time, and everyone knows what they have to do,” Nate said. “So it should be fun to see what we can do.”

Peoria Chamber leads business community in annual Biz 2 Biz Expo

BY PEORIA CHAMBER STAFF The Peoria Chamber recently partnered with the West Valley Chambers of Commerce Alliance to execute the 2019 Biz 2 Biz Expo at the Glendale Convention Center on August 22.

The alliance is comprised of the six West Valley chamber of commerce: Buckeye Valley, Glendale, Peoria, Southwest Valley, Surprise Regional and Wickenburg.

The one-day event garnered over 120 exhibitors and more than 500 patron attendees who were able to connect with businesses from across the West Valley.

Open to the general public, this annual event is geared toward the exchanging of ideas, sampling services, learning about various areas of business and making great connections within the community.

Upon entering the convention center, patrons were immediately greeted by event staff, given a table layout map and a list of expo participants. A quick look to the left yielded a row of restaurateurs with free tasting and sampling offers, and to the right was a beverage

Announcers also conducted on-thespot interviews of participating businesses, giving them an opportunity to address the crowd briefly and introduce their businesses.

The Peoria Chamber had the second-largest amount of business participation, trailing closely behind the Glendale Chamber.

Even Rep. Debbie Lesko, of Congressional District 8, was in attendance to speak with guests. She invited all attendees to join her and her staff at their own expo table, encouraging those who may need assistance on the federal level to contact her for assistance.

Also in attendance, and prominently posted, was Michael Cohen of the Small Business Development Center.

The SBDC is a free consultation, learning and support organization for small business owners, funded by the Federal Small Business Administration and supported locally by Maricopa Community Colleges.

Sen. Rick Gray visits with chamber members

Sen. Rick Gray was the featured speaker at the Peoria Chamber of Commerce’s highly anticipated quarterly luncheon, which was held recently at Palmbrook Country Club.

Mayor Cathy Carlat was in attendance, alongside many business owners and professionals.

Gray spoke about the critical need of perspective and information from business owners and how this information is crucial to the governing process.

Gray was appointed to the Arizona Senate in January 2018, after which he

was elected to serve Legislative District 21 on November 6.

As he explained it, he was driven to the political arena through the discovery that business owners, and those employed by small businesses, are directly impacted by local, state and federal political initiatives.

Senior constructs ‘Ploesti Project’ modeled after WWII event

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF Freedom Plaza Retirement Community’s gallery recently showcased three-dimensional replicas created by “model resident” Phil Bruner depicting the aerial combat raid of Romanian oil refineries in the city of Ploiesti, formerly spelled Ploesti, during World War II’s Operation Tidal Wave.

An accomplished artist and retired 29-year history and science teacher, Bruner captured in minute detail large and small scale models of oil fields targeted in a daring mission by the U.S. Army Air Force on that fateful day of August 1, 1943.

“For many years I have been interested in World War II, and ever since I was a child I have done modeling,” Bruner said. “These two interests have

come together over the years to make a project out of an American attack on oil refineries in Romania that were making gasoline for the Germans.”

Bruner crafted large-scale representations and smaller miniatures depicting the barracks, boiler factories, storage tanks and cooling towers of the oil fields based on pictures and diagrams in the book “Black Sunday: Ploesti!”

Bruner refers to Freedom Plaza’s gallery exhibit by the code name “Ploesti Project,” which salutes the heroic deeds of the brave airmen on that mission.

“Though the raid was a practical failure, it inspired generations of fliers and it remains a story of heroism that will not fade away,” Bruner stated. “The

Theater Works opens 2019-2020 season with Monty Python’s ‘Spamalot’

“Spamalot” is full of numerous references to “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” television skits like the “Lumberjack Song,” “Spam” and the dead parrot sketch, while some of Broadway’s cherished musicals are skewered along the way, including a spoof of Andrew Lloyd Webber, “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Man of La Mancha,” “Les Miserables” and “The Producers.” The 2005 Broadway production won three Tony Awards including Best Musical and was followed by two successful West End runs.

Tickets are now on sale for Monty Python’s “Spamalot.” The production takes place in the Gyder Theater at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts, 10580 N. 83rd Drive, from September 6 through September 22.

Theater Works will present the 2005 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, Monty Python’s “Spamalot,” beginning Friday, September 6, at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts.

This musical is lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” where audiences join King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table on their quest to find the Holy Grail. It features a bevy of beautiful show girls, not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people.

The cast includes: Patrick Russo as King Arthur, Sonia Rodriguez Wood as Lady of the Lake and Michael Stewart as Sir Robin.

The book and lyrics for the production were written by Eric Idle, with music by John Du Prez and Idle. Sarah Wiechman handled the choreography, with musical direction from Jennifer Whiting Adams.

Frosty knows how to warm up the audience

Jeff Frost knows how to reach all his fans. His Peoria-based band, Frosty & The Silver Tones, can get the crowd moving with the Black Crowes’ “Hard to Handle” or the Brian Setzer Orchestra’s “Jump, Jive an’ Wail” — and anything in between.

“We love playing our original music, too,” he said. “We all share vocals. Our bass player sings ‘Gravity’ by John Mayer. ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ always gets the dancers. We really do a variety.

We do ‘Minnie the Moocher’ with the trombone player. ‘Shout’ from ‘Animal House’ gets the crowd going.”

Frosty & The Silver Tones perform from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. Friday, September 27, at the El Dorado Bar and Grill, 8708 E. McDowell Road, Scottsdale. They also hit the stage during the Lovin’ Life After 50 Expo on Wednesday, November 13, in Mesa. Lovin’ Life After 50 is the Peoria Times’ sister publication.

Besides Frost, the band includes trombonist/vocalist Mike Salazar of the West Valley; bassist/vocalist Kai Young of Phoenix; guitarist/vocalist Stephen Kovach of Peoria; and drummer Ryan Ohara of New River.

“We’re a high-energy band who plays a variety of music,” Frost said.

“We have fun. If we didn’t have fun, we wouldn’t have a band.”

Frost is a longtime musician who started piano lessons at age 5 with his grandmother. Born in California, Frost has spent “more than half” of his life in Arizona. His father worked for the oil company, so the family frequently moved — Atlanta; California; Aurora, Illinois; Houston.

He admitted he is a late-blooming musician.

“I played, but I didn’t understand how to get it going,” he said. “The kind of music I did at the time wasn’t really popular — rockabilly. I never learned how to do it, nor did I have the confidence to do it.

“This was in the ’80s and I only did Christian music in my 20s. I was raised in a hardcore ‘thou shalt not’ household. The only thing I could do is play Christian music because of the way I was raised.”

His resume includes stints opening for the Newsboys and Casting Crowns.

“They were cool experiences,” said Frost, 55. “Then I wrote my own stuff.

My style — bluesy, rock ‘n’ roll — didn’t go over well. The niche is really small. So I quit music for a little while.

It wasn’t fun no more.”

Eventually, he started going to jam sessions and the applause gave him the confidence he needed.

“People who see me are surprised that I was once terrified to get up there (on stage),” he said. “It was a lack of confidence.”

His current band is four years old, but Frost began his career in a rockabilly band with hired musicians.

“We started off as a rockabilly band — even then I wanted to do different things,” he said. “We had an upright bass player who was one of the best in Phoenix But when you don’t stay strictly rockabilly, you don’t keep the upright bassists.

“But I’ve always been full of energy and I don’t plan on stopping.”

D-backs executive improves lives with baseball

Debbie Castaldo has been with the Arizona Diamondbacks for 11 years, but the Peoria resident is their unsung heroine.

She serves as the team’s vice president, corporate and community impact, and executive director of the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation.

The D-backs Give Back efforts include more than $60 million in charitable contributions to nonprofit organizations throughout the state on behalf of the D-backs and the foundation.

“If you had asked me if I’d ever end up doing this, I never would have guessed in a million years,” she said.

“The culture created under (managing general partner) Ken Kendrick is unsurpassed.”

When he hired Castaldo in 2009, he gave her a blank canvas — and that was during the financial crisis.

“He said we need to do more than ever, so let’s get ‘em. Let’s do this,” she said. “We started to build a legacy

here that started before the team was ever a team. We continued to escalate those efforts. We’ve become a community leader.”

During Castaldo’s tenure, community involvement with corporate partners has grown to include integrated philanthropic programs with APS, Arizona Lottery, Chase, Crescent Crown Distributing, Dignity Health, Fox Sports Arizona, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Sanderson Ford, University of Phoenix, Fry’s Food Stores and Safelite Autoglass.

She also helped create Gonzo’s Hometown Heroes with Luis Gonzalez. In 2014, she worked with Paul and Amy Goldschmidt to create Goldy’s Fund for Kids supporting Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

“We raise money, but more importantly, we make an impact,” she said.

“We solve problems for our community. It’s hard work. We’re out front doing it every single day. That makes this job so rewarding.

community, she said, and demonstrate it through the D-backs Youth Jersey Program, which provides jerseys and hats to youth baseball and softball leagues in Arizona. This year, with help from Fry’s, Tide and Steward Health,

the program expanded to 115 leagues and 70,000 players and coaches.

Spearheaded by Castaldo, the team has dedicated 42 youth baseball field — mostly in the name of D-backs players and staff.

The team’s charitable efforts recently surpassed $65 million in charitable giving in real dollars. Castaldo’s goal is $100 million.

“In addition to that, we have 120 Little League participants in the youth jersey program,” she said. “Our true legacy is to continue to grow the game of baseball and softball at a time when purchasing a baseball glove is out of reach. We want to be the solution to keeping kids on the field.”

Getting started Castaldo earned a degree in business administration and marketing from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1992.

Before the D-backs, she worked for St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center as director of philanthropic innovation.

Prior to joining St. Joseph’s, Castaldo was the director of strategic partnerships for Westcor Shopping Centers, but she began her career in Arizona with Alltel, heading up marketing operations for the wireless company’s

Castaldo said the reasons behind her success are simple: She picks topics she’s passionate about.

“When you pick things you love and are passionate about, you always find time,” she said.

“We do things as a family, too. When you’re doing things as a family, it doesn’t feel like work. Plus, from myself on down and all the way to the top (at the Diamondbacks), we’re extremely passionate, genuine and authentic. We love doing what we’re doing.

When we see a child having success in school and in life, I know some of those lessons were learned on a baseball field.”

It’s OK to like characters, but they better have character, too CHURCH COMMUNITY CONNECTION Pastor Ed Delph Peoria Times Columnist

Let’s start with this thought. The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch.

At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note and posted on the apple tray: “Take only one. God is watching.” Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table, was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A girl had written a note, “Take all you want. God is watching the apples.” That girl is probably one of those characters that could use a bit of character.

Have you noticed all the chatter about character and ethics lately? Most

days some big shot is caught in some character failing.

It’s frontline news. We are shocked. We get outraged, but only if it’s a person with whom we don’t philosophically agree. The big shot with whom we agree philosophically gets a free pass.

Doesn’t that reveal a character issue in us almost as significant as them?

Times like that in which we are living require good character more than ever. Good character traits are listed in school cafeteria walls, in the newspaper, in businesses and in politics.

It seems like the more we push good character in our world, the more we get characters in our world. However, good character won’t return until we get an

a-ha about the necessity of character in all aspects of life. Character comes from within. Just because one acts like they have character doesn’t mean they have good character. You can’t change your character by getting a facelift.

Today, we are obsessed with characters who have zero character. They are weird and entertaining. It makes for good optics and good media ratings. The message being broadcasted 24 hours a day is a character doesn’t need good character.

But where are 90% of those characters 20 years later? That kind of personality-driven, media-supported success has a short shelf life. It’s not sustainable. It will get you in the long run. It’s not progressive. It’s regressive to both the character as well as the audience.

Character determines long-term success. Our talents, drive, gifts or abilities might get us to the top, but character keeps us there. Realizing our full potential is impossible without good character. Our character affects others and their trust in us. Trust violations because of character flaws and deficiencies create limited and guarded relationships. People and institutions withdraw from us. It becomes a “loselose” for everyone.

Let me give you an example of what I’m talking about. Years ago, I was contacted by a high official of the United Nations. He shared with me that he was the head of a U.N. program whose goal was to find people of “ethics” who could teach on character in cities throughout Russia. He said many western businesses had invested in Russia, but because of a lack of basic business ethics, most of those businesses were now leaving Russia. That was leading to instability in Russia. The United Nations’ solution was to find leaders from other countries with a lifestyle of good ethics or values and introduce those values to the Russian business community through seminars all over Russia.

The characters were there. They just lacked character.

Did you catch that? The United Nations understood those businesses coming to Russia would never add real value to Russia with employees, politicians, teachers, academics, business leaders and the like who are characters with little character.

Fair ethics and good character are essential for any nation, business or person to thrive in the long term. Theodore Roosevelt wisely said, “To educate a man in the mind and not in morals (values) is to educate a menace to society.”

Lindsay White of Costa’s Fresh Produce says, “We used to hire people for their skills, but we found we were firing them for character issues. Now we hire for character (values) and train for skills.”

Let me ask you a question. If you were an employer, which of these employees would you rather employ?

An employee who is alert or careless; compassionate or indifferent; diligent or slothful; orderly or confused; thorough or incomplete; has a good attitude or a bad attitude?

If you are an employee, for what type of employer would you rather work? An employer who is generous or stingy; attentive or distracted; wise or foolish; truthful or untruthful; ethical or unethical? The answers should be obvious.

Many have given up hope on finding people with good character these days.

Character or the lack of character affects us all. Character can be our best friend or our worst enemy! Make character your best friend! Character isn’t old-fashioned. It’s wise because it’s efficient and it’s effective. History shows the people and nations who forget the necessity of good ethics and character are soon forgotten themselves.

Allow me to say it this way: It’s OK to like a character, but they better have character, too! How about you, the character? The bigger you grow in quality character, the better quality of life gets for the character.
