A rizona Broadway Theatre’s annu al fundraising ball has been taken over by King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table this year, and all Valley residents are in for a memorable evening.Theprofessional theatre is hosting a Monty Python-inspired charity ball, dubbed “Spam-a-palooza: A Knight You’ll Never Forget,” to launch its 202223 season. The fundraising event will honor longtime Arizona Broadway The atre (ABT) board member Tom Eggleston, while celebrating and supporting per BY JORDAN ROGERS Peoria Times Staff Writer S ixty-six Republican committee members from legislative district 28 voted unanimously to censure Peo ria Mayor Cathy Carlat. The censure, which was issued on July 22, accused Carlat’s conversations with a “sitting Democrat” as a supposed en dorsement.AnAug. 24 statement released by LD 28 said the “sitting Democrat” was former Peoria City Councilmember and mayoral candidate Bridget Binsbacher.
“The Executive Board of Legislative District 28, encompassing a large por tion of Peoria, has reached out to Mayor Carlat as well as Bridget Binsbacher via email with no response. Are we, the Re publican voters in Peoria, to believe that Mayor Carlat’s ideals and endorsement of Democrat Mark Kelly will not spill over onto her close friend and protégé Bridget Binsbacher?”Aregistered Republican, Carlat said she was “happy to comment.”
“She has endorsed her protege, and for mer Peoria City Councilmember of seven years Bridget Binsbacher as her succes sor,” the statement said.
“Peoria is a nonpartisan city, and I am in support of members of our congressio nal delegation that support Peoria’s goals and objectives and work for the good of the residents of our city.

ABT hosted its annual Broadway Ball for eight years before the in terruption of the pandemic. After a successful event in 2021 based on its production of “Chicago,” the the ater’s team decided to take a similar approach and throw a ball showcasing its upcoming productions while be ing more immersive and financially friendly for guests.
“This dedication and service to his community are the cherished qual ities that have made Mr. Eggleston an essential guiding voice at Arizo na Broadway Theatre and this year’s well-deserved honoree,” Meyer said.
The event will present many activ ities and opportunities for guests to participate in the fundraising. There will be a variety of games, the open ing of a weeklong online auction, and a costume contest.
In the Grand Lobby, guests will have the opportunity to dance while local string trio Sweetwater Strings plays onstage. Meyer said it will resemble the TV show “Bridgerton,” as it will mimic a high-class environment suit ed for dukes, duchesses, lords and ladies.
“It’s just a creative way to get people interested in supporting us in a differ ent way and helping the community, besides being able to bring these shows to life on our stage,” Meyer said.

MAYOR FROM PAGE 1
“The people of Downtown Peoria must feel forgotten about as the finan cial focus has been on North Peoria,” the statement said. “What about the crime in southern Peoria? Our law enforcement is severely understaffed at a ratio of only one-to-one per thousand residents. A city the size of Peo ria should be upwards of two for every thousand.”Thefinal portion of the statement from LD 28 discussed its approval of Binsbacher’s running mate, Jason Beck.“The residents of the city of Peoria are tired of career politicians who do not listen to their constituents and use the office for personal and political gain,” it said. “It’s time to start fresh in the city of Peoria with a successful proven businessman, a United States Marine Corps veteran, one of the largest business owners in Peoria em ploying more than 300 people (and) a champion for all the citizens living in Peoria.“Not to mention, part-timer Bridget Binsbacher wants to make the mayor position full time (it’s always been part-time), with full time pay, a vehi cle, and all the benefits of holding the office. The city of Peoria needs Jason Beck as the next mayor and is fully supported by Legislative District 27 and Legislative District 28, both dis tricts that cover all of Peoria.

Labor Day pays tribute to the working class
L abor Day is coming, and August will soon be in our rear view mirror. This is the one holiday to celebrate and honor the hard work that we all do. Every single day. Even if you are retired, you can feel proud of all those hours you logged in and celebrate your accomplishments.
Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell was apoplectic: “President Biden’s student loan socialism is a slap in the face to ev ery family who sacrificed to save for col lege, every graduate who paid their debt, and every American who chose a certain career path or volunteered to serve in our armed forces in order to avoid taking on debt. This policy is astonishingly unfair.” My reaction? It was what kids today would abbreviate as “SMH,” for shaking my head. It’s all the response I can muster any more for the predictable screeching that arises whenever the government — local, state or federal — does anything.
Originated over 100 years ago, it is one of the few national holidays that was created for no person, war or re ligion, but for the common working stiff — you and me. When Labor Day originated with a parade in 1882, it was to recognize the backbreaking work, long hours and measly wages that many Americans endured just to survive. The working conditions were rough for the labor force, which in cluded children, who were out there digging ditches, building bridges, rail ways, roads and schools. Maybe Labor Day is a holiday that celebrates the very thing that Ameri cans do best. We work hard! In other countries, workers may take longer vacations, have shorter work weeks and see nothing wrong with closing up shops for months at a time. Germa ny has invoked a law that an employ er cannot contact an employee about any job-related issues after 6 p.m. and never on weekends. It seems that folks in foreign countries might be pam pered. Feeling stressed? In France, you might get to go to a 10-day spa in order to rejuvenate. Tax dollars pay for this. Hmm, so very un-American. Most folks think that Labor Day has lost its true meaning. It has become just another shallow three-day week end and an excuse for more retail sales. Over the years, Labor Day rep resents the unofficial end of summer, start of football, beginning of school and one last barbecue. An estimated 137 million Ameri cans will travel this coming weekend. Probably half of them will be stuck in the parking lot, better known as I-17. The other millions will be at airports trying to get from point A to B without a delay, cancellation or lost bag. Good luck! In other words, just going some where to relax can be very stressful. My girlfriend likes to write down every task she has done for the past year so that on Labor Day she can re flect. She calls it “work journaling.” OK, but is this really a good idea? When she realized that she made 330 dinners, washed 200 loads of clothes, had 300 Zoom meetings and mucked stalls for two horses 620 times, it seemed more like a horror movie flashing before her eyes. Never count all the tasks you have done in a year! This is not a way to “reflect” or enjoy a three-day weekend! This is the time when we consider autumn, with the promise of cooler days, longer nights, pumpkin spice aromas and fewer weeds to cut. Oh, and go ahead, dare to relax every now and then. It is good for the body and soul. But please don’t think about all the hours you have toiled in your life since that could be upsetting. Hope fully you can enjoy the “fruits of your labor” all year long. PT
Student debt giveaway underscores bigger problem
SEE DEBT PAGE 9
BY DAVID LEIBOWITZ Peoria Times Columnist E arly Aug. 24, President Joe Biden doddered to the White House microphone and an nounced the forgive ness of an estimated $300 billion in student loan debt. The plan, should it survive court challenges, will wave a magic wand at $10,000 in debt for borrowers making less than $125,000 a year and up to $20,000 for Pell grant recipients. The reaction? The usual partisan theat rics.Liberal Democrat Sen. Elizabeth War ren nearly broke both hands applauding Biden: “This is one of the biggest acts of consumer debt relief in American history, and it will directly help hardworking peo ple who borrowed money to go to school because they didn’t come from a family that could write a big check.”
Depending on the decision maker, whether it’s a MAGA hat Trump acolyte or someone who worships at the altar of Old Joe Santa on the left, forever giving away cash, record inflation be damned, it’s yet another moment to exhort or com plain, so long as you root, root, root for the home team. Here’s a thought that borrows another social media acronym: How about you all STFU and spare the rest of us your talking points?Therest of us being the approximately 250 million Americans not registered as Republicans or Democrats and/or the 150 million Americans who didn’t vote for ei ther Biden or Donald Trump in 2020. Why such hard feelings? It’s the glaring hypocrisy.In2008, when Lehman Brothers, AIG and Wall Street irresponsibility crashed the American economy, McConnell led the way on a $700 billion bailout of the rich, which he lauded as “one of the finest moments in the history of the Senate.”

The most common complaint dealt with style as well as substance. Americans associate success with the top… not the bottom. Accordingly, the advice of the agriculture department was to “invert the pyramid.” (Sound familiar?) Adding “fat to the fire” was a failure to recognize research extolling the benefits of unsaturated fats in weight loss, as well the lowering of blood sugar and choles terolButlevels.blood pressure levels increased on the banks of the Potomac with accusations of “lactose tolerance” — allegations that the dairy lobby “milked” the benefits of the pyramid with larger visuals that made their products easier to recognize. USDA bureaucrats recognized they had created problems with the pyramid, but like most government workers, they were slow to embrace needed changes. Finally, in 2011, the pyramid transmogrified into a “personalized plate.”
Actually, “official” recognition of the food pyramid did not occur until 1992. That’s when the U.S. Department of Ag riculture (USDA) introduced its own ver sion, alternatively called the “Food Guide Pyramid” or the “Eating Right Pyramid.”
Despite this, everyday Americans seem to encounter new “nutritional studies” — well, everyday. That includes one from the University of Michigan that was cu riously released one month after Indepen dence Day. Did you enjoy a hot dog on July Fourth?
Egypt, there’s one “pyramid” that’s not shrouded in mystery. It’s the “food pyramid,” which attract ed quite a bit of controversy following its “construction.”Babyboomers can be forgiven if they carry a vague recollection of this dietary diagram from the scratchy, sprocket threaded, 16 millimeter monochromat ic motion pictures featured during their school days so long ago.
The USDA was all about inclusion at the base of the pyramid, grouping bread, cereal, rice and pasta together, suggesting six to 11 daily servings. On the next lev el, vegetables and fruits shared elevated status, with guidance of three to five serv ings of veggies and two to four helpings ofThefruit.penultimate placements belonged to milk, cheese and yogurt on one side and meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs and nuts on the other … with both group ings listing suggested servings of two to threeAnd,daily.atthe top, what most nutritionists in the early ’90s considered the “bottom feeders” among consumables: fats, sweets and oils … with the admonition to “use sparingly.”Criticswere unsparing in their scorn.
‘4D vision’:
An article in the Aug. 4 edition of The US Sun claims you might have cut more than a half-hour from your life span for indulg ing. Researchers in Ann Arbor claim that summertime staple may put nails in your coffin 36.3 minutes sooner than a non-hot dogScientistseater. conducting the study said they calculated the direct influence of 6,000 various meals, snacks and drinks. They claim that if someone who eats beef and processed pork products would ex change just 10% of their caloric intake for plant-based food, those “enlightened eaters” could gain an extra 48 minutes of life per day. Diagrams, delusions, diets and demise

It was the type of explanation that never would have flown with my parents, who worked hard to help me pay the college costs scholarships did not cover.
After a day of back and forth in the media — and a few text messages from friends celebrating or attacking Biden’s decision — I found myself transfixed by a moment that crystallizes the entire ar gument.Toward the end of Biden’s 20 minutes of self-congratulation, a reporter shouted a reasonable question at the man: “Is this unfair to people who paid their student loans or chose not to take out loans?”Biden, almost to the door, turned back to deliver a one-liner. “Is it fair to peo ple who, in fact, do not own multi-bil lion-dollar businesses if they see one of these guys getting all the tax breaks? Is that fair? What do you think?”

When it started, my daughter asked me who the girl driver was, and it turned out that’s who my daughter was cheering for.”
“I’ve had this privilege of being the Great Clips Mohawk Warrior, and so I get to wear the title of warrior on my chest. Because of this, I’ve gotten to meet a lot of real-life warriors,” he said. For the small to mid-size organiza tion — like many within out business community — additional difficulties arise when limited staff, resources and budget can prevent growth and hin der the ability to serve more people in need.Pair this with the increased desire for many job seekers to work for a so cially conscious company and a very interesting intersection of possibility is reached — one which the Peoria Chamber aims to tackle head on.
Launching this month, the Peoria Chamber of Commerce’s nonprofit membership tier will provide a bud get-friendly outlet for nonprofits to enhance their promotional efforts and directly engage with local businesses that can help support their mission. Whether it’s a volunteer need or a fi nancial one, bridging the gap and get ting to the right audience can often be half the battle.

There are many benefits of hiring people with disabilities. Some of the reasons may surprise you. Increase your profit margin
One Step Beyond P eople with disabilities have long been underrepresented or excluded from the workforce based on employers’ low expectations and prejudiced bias about abilities.
Tax benefits According to the Arizona Depart ment of Economic Security, an orga nization that hires someone who has a disability may qualify for the Dis abled Access Credit, Barrier Removal Tax Credit Deduction, and Work Op portunity Tax Credit. There are many reasons to consider hiring someone with a disability — the above focuses on how their presence affects the bottom line. But, the reasons are nothing to how it will make you feel and the joy it will bring to your heart. Many studies cite statistics about businesses that actively seek to em ploy people with disabilities outper form companies that do not. The re sults found that revenues, net income and profit margins increased. They also show that employers embracing disability saw increased employee re tention.
Individuals who have disabilities want to be active contributors to their communities and achieve their highest level of self-reliance. For that reason, my organization developed several unique approaches that not only assist these individuals in fulfilling their dreams of attaining meaningful employment but also en sure employers receive valuable em ployees. Our pre-vocational and voca tional programs provide participants with the necessary training and sup port to enter the workforce.

As CEO of an Arizona-based or ganization that promotes opportuni ty and inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities, I can tell you that things are looking up, but there is still more to do. We recently celebrated the 32nd an niversary of the signing of the Amer icans with Disabilities Act — a step that took a giant leap in recognizing the abilities and possibilities of indi viduals with a disability.
Broaden your hori zons, improve com pany culture, increase employee motivation and reduce turnover Think about this. Here are some char acteristics of people who have a disability:
Creative thinking, loyalty and friend lier dealings with co-workers and cus tomers sound like a great work culture to Askme. anyone who knows someone with a disability. Over all of last year, the county recorded 339 heat-associated deaths, the highest on record.Decades of rising temperatures prompted Phoenix to allocate almost $3 million to heat readiness in its 2021-22 budget, to launch an Office of Heat Response and Mitigation last fall, and to develop a heat response plan.“We’ve certainly seen significant trends in temperature here in Arizo na, especially nighttime temperatures, as a consequence of urbanization and global scale climate change,” said Da vid Hondula, director of the city’s Of fice of Heat Response & Mitigation.

“Now is the time to ‘go big’ to meet the needs of the moment,” the group said in a 2022 report on climate and health. “We can and must raise our voices to influence the decisions that will affect health now and for genera tions to come.”
“The atmosphere is warming at a very alarming rate, and the world leaders are not taking urgent enough action,” Darira said. 855-977-5138 www.dorranceinfo.com/lovin

21September 1, 2022 Peoria Times FEATURES coating to combat the urban heat is land effect; and a new heat shelter in Phoenix that can provide relief for up to 200 people experiencing homeless ness.“Almost everyone that comes in our doors initially has some level of heat-related illness, whether it be de hydration or extreme sunburn or signs of heatstroke,” said Jennifer Morgan, program director of the new shelter. “The need for a program like this one has existed, but the urgency was creat ed by the heat.” Heat affects the body in many ways: dehydration, heat stroke, exhaustion and anxiety, while also compromising preexisting heart and lung conditions.
The authors note that vulnerable populations are those most at-risk: children, older people, individuals of color, the poor and those with under lying health problems. Black people are 40% to 59% more likely to live in high-impact areas — those that experience the most brutal effects of climate change first. Indigenous com munities face a unique struggle with climate change. Living in tribal and rural areas along the coast leaves them vulnerable to the heat, and many rely on the environment for food and cul tural practices.
The Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health, which amplifies the voices of doctors in the U.S. while encouraging climate solutions, devel oped a three-prong approach to the issue. The plan is to stop investing in energy produced by fossil fuels, invest in and support renewable energy and make the transition fair to everyone.

Peoria Times Columnist L et me intro duce you to a couple you may have heard about from your Sun day school days. The couple was once the king and queen of Israel. Their names were Ahab and Jezebel. Most likely, you have heard about Jezebel. You wouldn’t have wanted to get on her wrong side. She was large and in charge even though her hus band, Ahab, was the king of Israel. Jezebel means brazen, shameless or morally unrestrained without cohab itation. Her calling card would say, “Whether right or wrong, I get what I want.”Here’s an incident that happened years ago. King Ahab, prone to child like tantrums and coveting, saw a vine yard he wanted for a vegetable garden near his palace. Ahab’s problem was the vineyard was owned by a citizen named Naboth. So Ahab offered to buy the vineyard. But Naboth replied, “The Lord forbid I should give you the inheritance of my ancestors.” Ahab went home angry, sulking, re fusing to eat. Jezebel asked Ahab why he was in a bad mood. Ahab told her what had happened. Jezebel respond ed, “Is this how you act as king over Israel? Get up and eat! Cheer up. I’ll get you the vineyard of Naboth the Jez reelite.” And get the vineyard, Jezebel did. Jezebel hired two “scoundrels” to lie and testify Naboth had cursed God and the king. So, the hired hands took Naboth outside the city and stoned him to death. Notice the pattern; lies, false witnesses, hired crowds and tak ing away property. I guess whatever “Lola wants, Lola gets” — for a while. There’s a fundamental difference between weakness and wickedness. Ahab had fleshly ego-driven weak nesses. Jezebel was wicked. Ahab had an issue of the head. Jezebel had an is sue of the heart. Ahab was clueless and spoiled. Jezebel was intentional and diabolical. Note that Ahabs and Jezeb els are a type, not a gender. This ex ample isn’t a male-female issue. There were heaps of Jezebel kings in Israel’s past. In this case, Ahab’s weakness was Jezebel’s passport into controlling a nation. Jezebel types look for weak people like Ahab to influence and con trol. You can’t be a puppeteer if you don’t have a puppet. In one sense, each one empowered the other. Ahab’s self-absorption, spoiled childish ways, and slothfulness created space for Jezebel’s hubris and ambition. The wickedness in her ruled Israel through Ahab’s weakness. Ahab gave his authority or right to govern to Jezebel, and Jezebel gladly took it. Together, they ruled Israel for years. God is patient, even with weak kings and wicked queens for a while. God gave them, as he gives us, every chance to make a turn and change for the better. But just because God is patient doesn’t mean God condones intentional dysfunctional behavior forever. At the appointed time, God sent a prophet named Elijah to make the king and queen aware their actions have consequences. Why did God pro phetically warn them? Because the king and queen’s issues were hurting themselves, their people and the na tion. That’s called love in action. King Ahab got upset (again) that God’s message through Elijah was stopping him from getting his way all the time. Jezebel flew into a rage (again). How dare Elijah or God cur tail Ahab and Jezebel’s ambitions? You don’t challenge the actions and attitudes of people like Jezebel with out creating ramifications of rage. Je zebel types don’t get even. They get revenge. Puppeteers and people “with out cohabitation” don’t like it when someone upsets their puppet. Sometimes we think someone is wicked when they have a weakness. We see this in the play called “Wick ed.” Conversely, we assume someone is weak when they are cruel. Don’t be too quick to judge. Learn to discern. Watch their example. Watch who is SEE DADDY PAGE

For more info, see nationstrategy.com. and who is repelled by them. Is what they do primarily for or their desire? In other words, who’s their daddy? The problem with any nation, soci ety or community is it takes an Ahab to create a Jezebel. The character of the king or queen permeates the king dom. Israel languished and mourned because of Ahab’s head and Jezeb el’s heart for a while. But people like Ahab and Jezebel generally don’t end very well. These two “experts” even tually became ex-spurts … shooting stars that were bright for a moment and then quickly burnt up. God let the dogs out. Let me quote a Bible verse about Je zebel that will surprise you. It’s Jesus talking about Jezebel. “And I gave her time to change directions, but she has no intention of changing directions…” Revelation 2:19. That’s love. Consid er this, leaders and people aren’t pun ished for their mistakes. Leaders and people are punished by their mistakes. I’m not being harsh or hardheart ed here. On the contrary, this article is exhortation and encouragement. I’m just trying to make us aware of real life. We all have weaknesses, but some have just a bit more weaknesses than others. That could be dangerous, whoever we are. Why? Because the more weaknesses we have, the more desirable we are for weak or even wicked people who need more vulner able people to advance their agenda. Don’t run from God to the “daddy” of weakness or wickedness. Instead, run to God, the daddy of wellness. Transform your weakness or your wickedness into wellness. Be empow ered for life abundantly. Then you will know “what’s your name” (it’s not weakness or wickedness) and “who’s your daddy.” God’s not dead, God’s dad.God loves you, and he approved this message.
