hen Michael Lancaster returned from serving in Vietnam in 1970, he was met with a disgusting response at a West Coast airport. “We came out of the bathroom, and a group of about 10 people called us horrible names and threw a bucket of pig’s blood on us,” said Lancaster, who lives in Peoria. “It ruined our uniforms.” Fifty years later, he received the welcome he deserved as part of Honor Flight, locally sponsored trips led by nonprofits that transport veterans to see the war memorials in Washington, D.C. The trips are free to the veterans. “To have the recognition of people was amazing,” Lancaster said.

tudents from across the Valley spent their summer at Abrazo West Campus learning about health careers and helping in various departments through the hospital’s summer program. Needing to meet a specific criterion to apply, more than 200 students between the ages of 15 to 19 applied for this inclusive program last spring. “It was really something to guide our kids in our community, since Abrazo

West is a really big community hospital,” said Trisha Pollard, director of surgical services at the Goodyear hospital. “We like to feed our community. … It’s really just the development of our kids and kind of growing them into this field.” Of the more than 200 who applied, just 42 students were selected to partake, coming from Anthem, Avondale, Buckeye, Glendale, Goodyear, Litchfield Park, Peoria, Scottsdale and other locales. Pollard said she was impressed with what she saw. “These are really driven students,” Pol-

lard said. “When I was even just talking to them, they really knew what they wanted to do. They really had good questions to ask. You can tell they were really engaged. “They were really just engaged and happy to be here. So, it was really, really exciting.” Highlighting the program were onehour “Lunch and Learn” sessions and four-hour workshops that offered handson activities and speakers ranging from

Lunch and Learn topics included careers in intensive care units; respiratory therapy career paths; radiology and imaging careers; emergency management; careers in emergency medicine and trauma medicine; physical, occupational and speech therapy; pathways to a career in surgery; and health care administration careers, among others. Being able to put on this program for the community at such a large and reputable hospital is gratifying for Pollard, but it all feeds back into Abrazo West’s roots. “One of the things I love about this hospital is it started as a community hospital, really just serving the West Valley years ago, but it’s really grown into a big trauma center,” she said. “Now we’re advanced with complex robotics and complex spine procedures and complex heart procedures. “I think it can draw the attention that kids really want, because there’s such a wide variety of things to do here. were covered throughout the workshops as well. Those included “stop the bleed” for trauma emergencies, wound care and treatment, as well as robot-assisted surgery. “I think as we build the program, a lot of people will know that they didn’t just come here and listen to speakers, because what 14-year-old is going to listen to someone talk for an hour, right?” Pollard said. “I think the fact that they got to see so much, that it was hands-on, that they were chosen, that it wasn’t just like, ‘Hey, we’re going to take this kid … but they had to show a true interest and prove it,’ I think that’s important.” Of the 42 students who participated in the summer program were Alexis Olayo and Alana Roman, who recently graduated from Canyon View High School in Waddell. Olayo, who will attend Phoenix College, is interested in a career in respiratory therapy. Roman, who is interested in a career as a trauma nurse, will attend the University of Portland. The two agreed they have seen and learned more in the program than they ever had in any internship. Abrazo West’s program lived up to what they thought it would be. “We thought there would be really great experiences, which we were told,” Roman said. “With there being like 200 applicants, and only a few

people were chosen, meant that it’s a great opportunity. It’s something that we just couldn’t pass up.” Both students recommend the program. They each said anyone interested in the future should just take the leap and go for it. “They really don’t care about your school; they care about how you interact with people and like what you do outside of it,” Olayo said. “Write about yourself to get in here. The interview wasn’t too hard, but you just have to be a good people’s person.” “If you’re not sure, just take the risk, because what can go wrong?” Roman added. “You’re not going to get hurt, and it can only benefit you, and it’ll literally be an amazing experience.” Pollard said most rewarding part of being able to pass on this knowledge to these students is getting to see the excitement on their faces. “Seeing just the interest that they spark, it was really exciting to see,” she said. “We don’t get a lot of new nurses or a lot of new grads here in the OR because it’s really more a critical kind of department where (nurses) need a lot of experience. “Just the different types of pieces of the puzzle to put it together for them so it kind of all clicks and makes sense and the fact that this can actually imSEE SURGICAL PAGE 5

Peoria is drought ready

As Arizonans continue to hear more about the water shortage, it is important that Peoria residents have the facts. Declining water levels in Lake Mead, which serves as the water reservoir for the Lower Colorado River Basin, have already triggered a Tier 1 shortage declaration. Peoria has prepared for drought conditions for many years and has plans in place should those conditions worsen. Currently, about 34% of Peoria’s water supply is from the Colorado River/CAP Canal and the city uses 61% of its available CAP supply, storing the rest underground. Info: peoriaaz.gov/droughtready

Request a water conservation kit

In an effort to try to assist its residents in saving water, the city of Peoria is offering water conservation kits. They can

be requested through the city’s sustainability program. The kit includes a WaterSense showerhead, high-efficiency faucet aerators, a kitchen swivel aerator, a garden hose nozzle, and educational material on how to find and fix leaks at home. Peoria Firefighter Charities hosts drive-thru backpack event

With back-to-school time quickly approaching, Peoria Firefighters Charities is hosting its second-annual drive-thru backpack event to help students prepare for the school year. The event, which is on Saturday, Aug. 6, will take place at the Peoria Sports Complex located at 16101 N. 83rd Avenue. The backpack drive begins at 8 a.m. and will continue until supplies last. The

Visit the renovated Peoria Main Library

Recently, the Peoria Main Library underwent some building and technology upgrades. Located at 8463 W. Monroe Street, the Peoria Main Library got a new computer system at the service desks, a new podcast studio, public art and a new outdoor courtyard. The new computer system includes self-service stations that make checking out and returning books easier for patrons. The podcast studio has new audio equipment and tools for residents to try for free. Additionally, the courtyard has a prickly pear gate, a garden, sensory panels and artificial turf. “We have a long waiting list of veterans after the COVID-19 pause, and it’s important to keep the flights going. Many veterans have told us it was the trip of a lifetime.” Honor Flight Arizona took its first flight of 11 World War II veterans in November 2009 and has now flown more than 2,400 World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans. Trips have also included more than 1,600 guardians assisting the veterans along the way. Honor Flight Arizona has a base of many active volunteers. Honor Flight Arizona is part of the nationwide Honor Flight Network. The nonprofits accept private donations and corporate support. This trip’s sponsor was Daughters of the American Revolution-Yavapai Chapter. When Lancaster left for his Honor Flight trip, TSA agents were dressed in special uniforms, and patrons rose from their seats to applaud and thank the veterans for their service. Upon their arrival in Baltimore, Lancaster and his peers were thanked for

their service, sending the veterans into a pool of tears. “There’s a video of me shaking hands with a young man,” Lancaster said. “It was a very moving time. We went to the Vietnam Memorial and got very emotional.” Hailing from Parker, Lancaster left for Vietnam with 14 others. Only six returned. With Honor Flight, Lancaster and his peers also visited the Korean War Veterans Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, Air Force Memorial, the Vietnam Women’s Memorial, the Pentagon and Fort Lewis. Now 73, Lancaster was an Army medic from 1968 to June 1981, so he was especially moved by the women’s memorial. The memorial was dedicated in 1993 and includes a sculpture by Texas artist Glenna Goodacre depicting three women caring for a fallen soldier. Eight yellowwood trees surround the sculpture in honor of the eight servicewomen who gave their lives in Vietnam.

“I went over to the nurse memorial,” he said. “There were a couple nurses we lost in Vietnam. It was an awesome memorial. One nurse has a soldier lying across her lap. One is looking up at the helicopter. It’s a very, very moving memorial.” On the return trip home, the group was once again met with clapping and applause. “They had the honorary water cannon spray our plane,” he said. “They did it in San Antonio and Sky Harbor.” The water salute honors military veterans, foreign dignitaries and new airline service. Salutes typically involve two firefighting rigs spraying arcs of water over an arriving or departing flight. The two-minute display is a sign of respect, honor and gratitude. “About an hour and a half before we landed at Sky Harbor, we had one last mail call. In Vietnam, the mail call was one of the most important things,” Lancaster said. “On the plane, they read each per-

son’s name, and they had letters from family members. I was in total tears when I opened the letters. It was a very moving, cleansing experience. The feeling of love is known when experienced BY JUDY BLUHM Peoria Times Columnist

colleague of mine just came back from a romantic trip to Italy and France with a new lady friend. I boldly asked him if he fell in love. He replied, “What is love?” Then he challenged me to\ describe love, because he couldn’t be sure if he would “know it when it happened.” I am no “love expert.” But my husband Doug and I have been happily

married for 40 years. (Hmm… perhaps I am qualified to write about this topic.) Yet, I also learned about love from my horses. Angel, at age 30, could still run like a filly (although stiff in the joints). She was beautiful, with a thick black mane, and had a sweet disposition. In her last year, Angel got an eye infection that would not heal, so she had to have her left eye removed. She had a cataract on her right eye, so this meant she was blind. The day we brought her back from the animal hospital, her stallmate, a large, white Arabian named Pegasus, was waiting for her. Once the horse trailer was parked and we got

Angel out, Pegasus ran up to Angel and carefully pressed his nose against her face. Then, he went to her left side and guided her back to the barn. That day, I watched while Pegasus walked a few paces in front of Angel, as they strolled around the arena, out to the pasture and back to the barn. Pegasus just took charge. Eventually, Angel was able to walk around the property by herself. She could even take off trotting, following Pegasus. But she got weaker. On a perfectly beautiful Saturday, Angel kept lying down and couldn’t get up without help. That day, two riders came to

help her up once. The next time she laid down, our neighbors helped. And then she laid down one last time. Pegasus went over to her, trying to nudge her up. But this time was different. No more strength; no more ways to get her to stand. That night, as Angel lay dying, Pegasus stood quietly over her. Just before she passed, he walked to her head, leaned down, and for at least two minutes he and Angel pressed lips together. That evening, Angel was laid to rest in the pasture. ‘Human torch’ killing has received muted reaction BY DAVID LEIBOWITZ Peoria Times Columnist

ou wake up before the sun rises and watch the video one more time, to be sure your eyes have not fooled you. The footage is grainy, shot by surveillance cameras, lit by street lamps. The hazy flash of fire takes your breath away. At 4:30 a.m. July 3, 2022, at a bus stop near 58th and Olive avenues in Glendale, a human being was doused in gasoline and set on fire by a man wielding a butane torch. Blake Angerer, age 30, can be seen on the video stumbling into a nearby Circle K, pants around his ankles, his shoulders, arm and lower body still ablaze. Witnesses douse Angerer with water. The video lasts just shy of four minWest Valley!

utes. It ends with Angerer prone on the store’s grimy tile, smoke rising from his body. Angerer’s sister, Riquida, described him on the family’s GoFundMe page as “a son, a father, a brother, a cousin, a friend, and all around a good looking and goofy charismatic man who really wanted to see the greatest parts of life.” Angerer was also a fighter. With third-degree burns charring over 70% of his body, he lasted more than three weeks in intensive care. Angerer died on the morning of July 26. In a gentler time, the deliberate barbecuing of a human being would draw more than a couple minutes on the news and a few headlines buried beside the furniture ads. But this is 2022, where you live amid mass shootings, double-digit inflation, monkeypox and COVID, political flame wars and an invasion of the U.S. Capitol by angry fools. Angerer’s killing and the arrest

of 41-year-old Luciano Simmons drew little more than a blip, despite the sheer depravity of the crime. Per the police report, Simmons, the alleged firestarter, plunked down a buck at Circle K. Seconds later, “Luciano is on camera filling up the water bottle with gasoline, and shortly after the victim and witness are observed running from the area of the bus stop to the entrance of the Circle K while the victim is on fire.” You stare at the frozen frame of the video for what feels like an hour. A wisp of smoke sits frozen on the screen. You contemplate not Simmons’ derangement, which you can only chalk up to mental illness or evil, but the response from the rest of us. A few stories, a few thousand clicks, some upset stomachs. Two hundred and 12 donations on the Angerer’s GoFundMe page, which currently totals $10,531 raised toward a goal of $100,000. Ten people in a Valley of 4.9

million have posted words of support and prayers. You dwell on the acronym used today to express disgust via text message. SMH. Shaking my head. Cold-blooded murder used to stop us. Neighbors would drop off dishes covered in foil. Strangers help defray the cost of medical treatment or the price of a coffin and a funeral. The name of the victim would become, at least for a few days, a top-ofmind presence in our collective consciousness. Not anymore. Now the news spends its precious space inventorying the latest influencers and conspiracies, venomous political candidates and venal Hollywood celebs. The death of Angerer once would have made you look until you could no longer stand it, until one human being’s searing agony forced you to look away. SEE REACTION PAGE 9

window at 2 in the morning and saw one majestic white horse standing vigil at her grave. For the next week, he stood by her grave for hours at a time. This is love. It is the pounding heart, lump in the throat, and that “I can’t live without you” feeling. It can be heart shattering and a miracle — all at the same time. It gives you the courage to lead your partner through darkness and the strength to stand vigil during the night. And when you experience it, you will know it. So, to my colleague, I can’t say for certain love happens in a gondola in Venice or over a candlelit dinner in Paris. But I am absolutely certain it happened on a pasture and in my barn.

Today, in 2022, we can barely be bothered to notice, to act. You start the video one final time, to be sure your eyes have not fooled you. And to be sure you still have a heart beating and aching in your chest. Because in the end, really, what else is there? PT

Northwest Valley Benevilla urgently hiring new employees BY SCIANNA GARCIA Peoria Times Staff Writer

he nationwide labor shortage remains a top challenge for employers across the country. Benevilla, a local nonprofit human services agency, finds itself among many of the businesses struggling to hire for open and newly created positions throughout the agency. “Unfortunately, this is a crisis affecting both businesses and consumers,” said Joanne Thomson, president and CEO of Benevilla. “If we can’t hire enough employees, we cannot meet the increasing needs of the community we serve. “It’s not easy for us to increase the cost of care we offer to our community to offset needed wage increases. The folks we service in our community cannot bear added financial pressure.”

Benevilla provides support services for older adults, adults with disabilities, children and the families who care for them. In addition, it provides services and programs that range from child care, to adult life enrichment day programs for stroke survivors and members with varying stages of dementia and Parkinson’s disease as well as numerous free, educational, caregiver support and volunteer home services. As the demand for these services has soared during the pandemic, Benevilla is currently searching for qualified candidates to fill 14 positions throughout its programs. In its Wirtzie’s Preschool and Childcare program there are openings for lead teachers and teacher’s assistants. The Family Resource Center (FRC) needs a community resource specialist and family support coordinator. The Benevilla FRC offers free, bilingual services and programs to families with young children throughout the North-

west Maricopa region. For its award-winning adult life enrichment day programs, Benevilla needs enrichment partners, enrichment specialists, nurses, transportation (van/bus driver) specialists and an intergenerational program coordinator. There is also an opening for a fitness exercise coach in the newly opened Benefitness Adaptive Gym. backs. Leading the charge are Daulton Varsho, 26, and Alek Thomas and Geraldo Perdomo, both 22. In 301 at-bats this season, catcher/outfielder Varsho had 12 home runs and 45 RBIs with a .233 average before the All-Star break. Thomas, who has been an outfield highlight reel in his rookie season, has approached home plate 212 times after being called up in May from the Reno Aces, the team’s AAA affiliate. The Chicago native took a .250 average into the All-Star break, with seven home runs and 22 RBIs. Filling in at shortstop for the veteran Nick Ahmed, Perdomo has stepped up to the plate 250 times thus far in 2022. The Dominican switch hitter owned an average of .200 at the AllStar break, with two home runs and 17 RBIs. Though he is only four years older than Thomas and Perdomo, Varsho wants to support his teammates, much in the way Kole Calhoun and Dallas Keuchel have for him. “I remember when I was coming up, Kole Calhoun took me out for breakfast every once in a while,” Varsho said about the now-former D-backs outfielder. “It’s nice to have that person. I want to do that for the younger guys. When we were in Colorado (playing), Dallas Keuchel took us younger guys out to dinner. It was a pretty cool move by him, just to show he cares.”

A competitive balance draft pick, the D-backs selected Varsho in the second round — 68th overall — of the 2017 MLB draft. That year, after signing, he made his pro debut with the Hillsboro Hops of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League. He batted .311 with seven homers. The following year, he moved up to the Visalia Rawhide of the Class A-Advanced California League and ended the season with a .286 batting average. He was named a mid-season all-star. During his 2019 season with the Jackson Generals of the Class AA

Southern League, he was named to the All-Star Futures Game. He was promoted to the big leagues on July 30, 2020, making his debut against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He wrapped his season hitting .188 with three home runs in 37 games. His .233 mark as of this year’s All-Star break marks a 45-point improvement from his MLB debut season. The catcher/outfielder combo is certainly noteworthy, too. Varsho, who hails from Marshfield, Wisconsin, has played 30 games at catcher, 31 games in center field, and 26 games in right field. Varsho’s goal is to maintain the camaraderie among the ballplayers. Good energy can be synonymous with a winning culture. “I want to make sure we’re all sticking together and just having fun,” he said. “When I came up, there were a lot of older guys. I just feel a lot of the younger guys have proven themselves coming up here. We’re having a lot of fun, and the energy is great with this team.” The younger faction came up together. Varsho and Thomas briefly played together in 2020. “Last year, I got to know him a little more, and now we’re really, really good friends and teammates,” Varsho said. “We’re a young team who’s ready to win. It’s nice to be in with (Josh) Rojas playing really well. He’s hungry. We’re hungry. He’s coming to the ballpark every day ready to play. “We’re playing for each other. We’re not playing selfish. We’re going out there and playing to the guy next to us.” PT

ProMusica Arizona announces upcoming season for 20th performance year BY ERYKA FORQUER

he nonprofit organization ProMusica Arizona is commemorating its 20th performance year of its multigenerational chorale and orchestra with a three-part concert series during its 2022-23 season. The upcoming season’s concerts feature the orchestra and choir where performances will include patriotic songs, familiar show tunes, holiday music and new tracks. Yvonne Dolby, executive director of ProMusica Arizona, said there will be “a lot of variety” in the organization’s upcoming season. “There will be some pieces that are the chorale with an accompanist, and there’ll be some pieces with just the orchestra,” Dolby said. “Then, there will be pieces that they do together.” This season, ProMusica Arizona consists of 50 to 60 choir members and nearly 40 orchestra members. The number of participants is far from the original count ProMusica Arizona started with when it was founded in 2003. “Seventeen singers got together and wanted to sing and form a choir,” Dolby said. “So, within a few months, there were 50 people in the choir, and then they added an orchestra the next year.” Dolby said the ages of the organization’s members range from mid-teens to early 80s. The choir and orchestra are mixed with college students, unpaid community volunteers and paid professionals who are actors and musicians. Although there is no maximum or minimum age to join the organization, Dolby said members are required to audition and perform a piece with the artistic director and concertmaster.

The songs feature texts from the Canadian author Marion Adler, who uses a saguaro cactus to depict the seasons of life. “We’ll also do a lot of music that we’ve performed over the years that audiences have really liked,” Dolby said. The last performances will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 1, 2023, in North Phoenix, and 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 2, 2023, in Sun City. Dolby said the orchestra and choir have been rehearsing for the upcoming concert series since August. The artistic director of ProMusica Arizona has also been working on the programming for several months. Dolby said the organization is particularly eager to see the performance of “Saguaro Song” during the series. “We’re really looking forward to doing that,” she said. “It’ll be the world premiere of that piece.” PT

Self-control is just controlling yourself

he title of this article today is a definition of self-control. Self-control is just controlling yourself. Here’s an actual account of an event that happened in 1986. Self-control could and should have easily prevented this tragic occurrence. In the summer of 1986, two ships collided in the Black Sea off the coast of Russia. Hundreds of passengers died after being hurled into the icy water below. News of the disaster got worse when an investigation revealed the cause of the accident. It wasn’t a technical problem like radar malfunction or even thick fog. Instead, the cause was human stubbornness. Each captain knew the other ship’s presence, and both could have steered clear. But neither captain wanted to give way to the other because

Yet, we are already half numb by the perpetual coarsening of the culture. The net effect is a culture full of rage and fears much more incendiary than “solutionary.” Many people devolve into what the Bible says the last days will be like: “Every person does that which is right in their own eyes.” Thus, the need for self-control benefits the person as well as society. When handling others, use your heart. When handling yourself, use your head. That’s called self-control. Could it be our boasted “progress” has landed us not in Paradise but pandemonium? Author and speaker Lance Wallnau said, “Self-control may be the greatest distinguishing mark between those who walk in the power of the Holy Spirit and wisdom and those controlled by their own appetites.” Without self-control, humans are likened to a city without walls: “Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down

each was too proud to yield. By the time they came to their senses, it was too late. If you’re a tough-minded, strongwilled, make-it-happen person, think about what you just read. If by winning the argument, you lose the relationship, what have you gained? If you save face but break trust and lose the connection, you end up in the loss column. In my opinion, this accident wasn’t caused by stubbornness. A lack of self-control caused it. Each captain was stubborn, but they didn’t use their self-control to harness their self-determination. Could it be the only thing worse than not using self-control is wishing you had? Everyone has triggers caused by either their nature or nurture. Self-control is what channels our triggers to a more positive outcome. Remember, when you have your finger on your personal trigger, listen, consider and yield to a constructive response. So, if you lack the aptitude for self-control, ask God for it. Self-control is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control…” So, if you have the Spirit of God, you have self-control. Without self-control, there can be no love because God’s love loves the unlovable. It takes self-control. We can’t be joyful for long without self-con-

trol because we will suffer the consequences of our impulsive and foolish decisions. The same is true of peace. Without self-control, there can be no patience. The same is true for the other fruits of the Spirit. During my life, I have operated by Delph-control, which was a disaster. At this point in my life, I’m learning to use the fruit of self-control. The results are much better. Here’s your takeaway. Self-control is just controlling yourself (with the Holy Spirit’s help). So, my advice in this article is to listen, consider and yield. PT
