ews came down July 22 that Arizona’s Legislative District 28 Republican Committee censured Peoria Mayor Cathy Carlat.

The committee accused Carlat’s conversations with a “sitting Democrat” as a supposed endorsement.

Carlat, who is a registered Republican, responded to the censure just one day later. She said the censure is unfounded.

Her response reads as follows: “Peoria is a nonpartisan city, and I am in support of members of our congressio-

nal delegation that support Peoria’s goals and objectives and work for the good of the residents of our city.

“I have been a Republican my entire adult life and no one, including LD 28, has the power or authority to decide if I am good enough to be a Republican.

To believe they have such power is truly un-American. It is in fact, completely contrary to the liberties that form the foundation of our great country. This kind of overreach is detrimental to the Republican Party, contributing to a fractured and weakened party, as evidenced by the fact that Arizona has two Democratic senators for the first time since 1952.

“Senator Kelly and I have had multiple discussions, in-person meetings in Washington, D.C., and by telephone about the CHIPS Act and the Federal Infrastructure Bill. Both of these pieces of legislation are critical to the future of the City of Peoria.

“The CHIPS Act is a matter of urgent concern for Peoria because we have two committed employers who are waiting for the benefits contained in this legislation to begin construction in Peoria. rizona Autism Charter Schools Inc., the only autism-focused charter network in the state of Arizona, has added a West Valley campus in the city of Peoria.

Set for its first day of school Monday, Aug. 1, Arizona Autism Charter Schools (AZACS) will welcome 120 students from kindergarten through fourth grade.

“The new AZACS West Valley Campus is a dream come true in so many ways,” said Diana Diaz-Harrison, AZACS founder and executive director. “It will help students and families who currently commute at least one hour one way to attend school at our main Central Phoenix campus.

“Additionally, it will make our specialized program for children with autism more accessible to students and families in the West Valley, who have been hungry for more school choice options on that side of town. With 1 in 41 children diagnosed with autism in our state, we know our school will make a huge impact in this community.”

The purchase of the campus was made possible by a $17 million bond financing project funded by the Maricopa County Industrial Development Authority.

“I really am humbled by everyone who has believed in our mission, our population and our track record of success with kids that come to our Central Phoenix campuses. … This amazing financing is going to make such an impact for families and students on the autism spectrum that will grow in an environment where they fit in and they can thrive and create, learn and contribute to the community,” Diaz-Harrison said. “This financial investment is really driven by a belief that our kids are worth investing in.”

I did everything from district schools to private schools but noticed that there wasn’t really a good choice within the school choice charter sector that focused on this growing population.

“Because of this gap in exceptional programming in a school setting for kids with autism, I was inspired by my son and hundreds of other kids that were just forced to be in schools that were not a good fit.”

Despite having opened that first location in Phoenix, Diaz-Harrison said it was always her “dream” to open a school in the West Valley. Inspired both by her son, who has autism, and her career in education, she lived in Goodyear and saw a void in the area for children with autism.

In addition, after opening the Phoenix campus, she and her team did research and found 30% of the children enrolled in her school commuted from the West Valley.

candidate in this race who will be ready on day one to lead Arizona to even greater heights, and that is Karrin Taylor Robson,” Pence added.

Ducey said he knows Taylor Robson well. The two have developed a relationship over the last 30 years, and he said she will take the “right approach” as governor of Arizona.

In addition, Ducey said the timing of Robson taking over as governor could not be more critical.

“Strong conservative leadership in states matters more than ever, and there’s no question that Karrin Taylor Robson is a proven conservative who is ready to lead our state on day one,” Ducey said. “She’ll fight for your safety, your individual liberties and your economic prosperity. She’s a rock-ribbed conservative that is pro-life, pro-gun and pro-wall.”

Pence said Robson’s support of he and President Donald Trump during the administration’s time in office was appreciated. He called her a “champion of the conservative movement.”

“She served in the Reagan administration and helped elect dozens of conservative candidates all across Arizona (and) around the nation,” Pence said. “I can tell you firsthand, no one worked harder for the Trump-Pence ticket in 2016 or in 2020.”

During his speech, Pence called on

supporters of the conservative movement to support Robson during her election run.

“The Grand Canyon State can continue to be a bastion of liberty,” Pence said. “People have the freedom to live and work and worship in the warm sunshine, and truthfully, it really is about freedom. That is what Karrin Taylor Robson is fighting for. Now, it is our turn to fight for her.”

Taylor Robson spoke at the campaign event as well. She said this vote will be vital in deciding the future of the state.

“It’s a very big day in the desert,” she said. “Between now and Aug. 2, voters will be deciding what kind of state we want and the sort of future that we want for our children.”

During her speech, Robson outlined her plan to secure the border and bring tax rates down if she were to be elected as governor.

“I will build on the economic successes of Gov. Ducey and offer a helping hand to our working families who are suffering under the disastrous Biden-Harris administration,” Taylor Robson said. “My plan will put surplus budget dollars to work returning a portion of these dollars to the rightful owner — Arizona families.”

In addition, she discussed changing some things up in Arizona schools.

“I will get left-wing politics out of

our schools, period,” she said. “Our kids will stand for the Pledge of Allegiance; they will learn to love this great country and they will learn that, yes, two plus two still equals four.”

Under her platform, Robson said she knows she has a lot of work to do if elected, but she feels she can accomplish it all.

“There’s a lot more work to do. We must address our water shortages; fix our schools; stand with our police, our service members and our veterans; and build an economy that works for every Arizona family. I know it’s a full agenda, but I know that it can be accomplished with courage, conservative leadership and a common set of goals.” PT

Peoria implements Stage 1 of Drought Management Plan

In recognition of ongoing regional and statewide discussions related to the Colorado River shortage, the city of Peoria has declared Stage 1 Water Watch of the Drought Management Plan to raise awareness and encourage voluntary reduction measures. Within Stage 1, the city will reduce municipal water use at city facilities and operations by at least 5%.

Thanks to Peoria’s diverse water portfolio and continued investment in water conservation programs, there is no immediate impact to the city’s ability to deliver water and, at this time, there are no mandatory water restrictions.

The backpack drive begins at 8 a.m. and will continue until supplies last. The backpacks and supplies are available for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, and students must be present to receive a backpack.

Peoria Community Center receives accessible fitness equipment

The Peoria Community Center has received five new pieces of accessible exercise equipment, including two SciFit Recumbent Steppers, a Sci-Fit Pro 2 (recumbent cycle/upper-body ergometer), a Concept 2 Rowing Ergometer and a Life Fitness Elliptical.

The recumbent steppers and cycle are step-through designs. This makes it easier for anyone, regardless of ability, to step in and take a seat. These machines also feature removable seats and ramped platforms. The fitness equipment includes technology that allows wheelchair users to connect to their various assistive devices.

The community center also retained a rower and elliptical for residents who are able and looking for a more intense cardio workout.

that there was an unmet need in the West Valley,” Diaz-Harrison said. “It was always my original dream to have a West Valley school to attract autism families from Avondale, Tolleson, Goodyear.”

Though the Peoria campus is currently a kindergarten through fourth grade school, it will add grade levels through the enrolled students’ senior years of high school as they age with the school.

In addition, unlike other autism-focused schools throughout the Valley, AZACS is tuition free.

“They get this world-class, autism specialty-focused school, and all they need to worry about is getting their kid there,” Diaz-Harrison said. “It is part of our mission to be accessible and tuition free so that a family’s demographic background is not a barrier to accessing the school.

“We’re a nonprofit, we’re a charter and we’re tuition free, which really eliminates barriers for families who already have a challenging journey

when they know that their child has more needs than most. At least paying for school is not one of those worries.”

Despite having just cut the ribbon on its second campus, Diaz-Harrison said she and her team are constantly doing “market research.” She will never rule out adding more campuses to meet the needs of autism families.

“We are excited to open this school and are open to growing our network to meet community demand and community need,” she said. “Every autism family should have the option for the highest, most enriching education that is differentiated to their child that is accessible and tuition free.

“So, we are not planning to stop growing our network. We plan to answer the call of the community and open sites wherever kids really need them.”

Report claiming Az. is worst in country is rubbish

Good grief, who are the mental giants (idiots) from Consumer News and Business Channel (CNBC) who ranked Arizona as the worst place to live in our country? Yep, that’s right. Guess we must all be losers for living in this wretched state, with last-place rankings in health care, environmental quality, crime, inclusiveness and education. The writer snidely said, “Just having the Grand Canyon is not enough.” Geez, not sure what these folks at CNBC are smok-

ing, but since we are about the fastest-growing state in the nation and new businesses are investing billions here, this report is a bunch of rubbish!

Vermont ranked No. 1. They have great maple syrup, yet I think the ranking system is a bit off. Texas is evidently another horrible place to live, so I’d say the entire “study” is one big farce.

No state is perfect. They all have certain charm and many problems. Arizona can improve. But the worst place to live in the country? No way.

So why live in Arizona? This was the question I was asked with great frequency while in San Diego. Usually, I just smile and shrug it off. From the waiter to the grocery clerk, everyone seemed interested in why a person of

sound mind would want to live in our heat. I was a little bit insulted! Why does everyone assume all of Arizona is in triple digits all summer?

The owner of the local coffee shop in Imperial Beach wondered out loud what “hell on earth” would feel like living in Arizona in the summer. A customer chimed in that he drove through Phoenix one July day, parked his car, and burned the skin off his hands when he got back in it and touched the steering wheel. I pointed out that Prescott is pretty cool and that Californians are moving to Arizona in droves, but no one cared.

The man I rent the beach house from said he can’t understand how people survive the heat in an Arizona summer.

He then asked, “Why live in misery?”

I told him (with a straight face) some folks like misery; seek out punishment; and love dust, drought, haboobs and prickly cactus. I went on to add some people like frying eggs on the sidewalk. The poor man didn’t talk to me much after that conversation.

Where else can you sit and watch the monsoons roll in and relish a thunderstorm? Sunsets are the best in the world, right here in our backyards. Our wildlife is abundant, the mountains are beautiful and, if Phoenix is hot, we have the high country. A surfer told me that without a beach and a wave, life wouldn’t be worth living. CNBC state rankings say a lot about the network

T

his week we ponder the greatest mystery in the 110-year history of the Grand Canyon State.

No, not how does a noxious fraud like Kari Lake lead the Republican gubernatorial field in 2022, according to multiple polls. I’m talking about Arizona’s other great mystery.

Namely, if this state is such a wretched place to live — as proclaimed yet again recently by the folks at CNBC television — then why do so many people keep moving here?

My hypothesis follows, but first we should delve into CNBC’s analysis, released last week.

As the network tells it, “We put the

states through an unprecedented 88 metrics in ten categories of competitiveness,” all to crown America’s best states for business and 10 worst states in which to live.

On the positive side, Arizona ranked 34th for business. On the negative side, we’re dead last in states to call home.

CNBC correspondent Scott Cohn’s Arizona write-up started off with a super clever “It’s a dry heat” reference before knocking the state for having “some of the worst air quality in the nation,” which stresses our “poor health care system, short on hospital beds and staff.”

In a nod at balance, Scotty touted Arizona’s “stunning natural beauty and top-notch cultural and recreational attractions.” However, “that comes at a stiff price in America’s worst state to live in.”

I contacted Scott to discuss his

hometown, the hippie dippie central California enclave of Santa Cruz. Just FYI, in Santa Cruz the average monthly rent on a studio apartment doubled over the last year to $2,500, according to the website Zumper.

Santa Cruz’s violent crime rate is 31% higher than Arizona’s, according to the Best Places website, while the property crime rate is 12% higher.

Of course, all the maiming and stealing may be explained by Santa Cruz’s stratospheric cost of living — approximately double Arizona’s, according to Best Places.

Sadly, Scott did not get back to me before my deadline. I hope he’s OK, living in such a hellhole.

As far as the CNBC survey, I’m of two minds.

One, let’s hope the 100,000 people planning a move to Arizona this year read it and stay home. All that migra-

tion is driving up the cost of housing and goods, plus hurting everything from traffic to air quality to the wait time between holes on one of Arizona’s 500 golf courses.

Then there’s my other theory, which explains the mystery of Arizona being ranked so miserably, yet remaining so popular to new residents.

It’s simple: While CNBC’s “unprecedented 88 metrics” sound impressive, their made-up criteria have zero to do with why people choose a home.

Housing supply balancing back to pre-pandemic numbers

n June 2022, 343 MLS listing sales closed in Glendale and 301 in Peoria.

Not counting properties already under contract or pending close of escrow, there are 664 active and available listings in MLS in Glendale and 585 active listings in Peoria. In total, there are 13,157 active listings in Maricopa County, and we have almost two months’ worth of housing sales inventory for the first time since June 2019.

According to The Cromford Report, the average number of days a listing

spent on the market in Maricopa County increased from 24.06 days in May to 28.05 days in June. While this is the first increase in days on the market that we have seen since July 2020, it is not uncommon to see days on the market increase during the summer months.

In June, 45% of Maricopa County listings sold for over the listing price, down from 57% of May’s sales. The closing price per square foot also decreased slightly from $318.46 in May to $315.58 in June.

According to Freddie Mac, as of July 14, National Mortgage Rates reported U.S. weekly averages of 5.51% for a 30year fixed, 4.67% for a 15-year fixed, and 4.35% for a 5-Year ARM. According to ShowingTime, the plat-

form Realtors use to schedule most of the MLS showings, the number of showings scheduled in Peoria dropped 16.7% from May to June, while Glendale only saw a 9% reduction in the number of showings. Listings in the $400,000$599,000 range accounted for 44% of Peoria showings and 49% of Glendale showings.

Not all showings are scheduled through ShowingTime, so actual numbers are typically higher.

According to MLS statistics, 70% of Maricopa County buyers financed their home purchase in June, while the rest paid cash. This number remains unchanged from last month.

Buyers using a conventional mortgage to buy a three-bedroom detached house

with two bathrooms paid a minimum of $280,000 in Maricopa County, $360,000 in Glendale, and $365,000 in Peoria.

Conventional financing made up 74.7% of June’s financed sales.

In June, FHA buyers in Maricopa County paid a minimum of $230,990 for a detached home with three bedrooms and two baths. Peoria FHA buyers paid a minimum of $365,000, and Glendale FHA buyers paid $350,000. FHA buyers made up 8.3% of financed purchases in May. Maricopa County VA buyers making a similar purchase paid a minimum of $285,000, $395,000 in Peoria, and $425,000 in Glendale. Home purchases SEE SUPPLY PAGE 13

“Blood brings oxygen and nutrients to your feet which they need to stay healthy,” explains Zang, “When your feet aren’t getting an adequate supply, they start sending signals.” Those signals include pain, burning, tingling, numbness, or cramping.

The good news is PAD is treatable in

an office setting. Dr. Joel Rainwater, MD endovascular specialist explains, “We go into the bloodstream to find the blockage using imaging guidance. Then with small tools that can go into the smallest arteries, remove the blockage, and restore blood flow.”

Getting the proper diagnosis is the first step to getting better. “It’s all about finding out what’s causing the problem,” says Zang. “When your feet burn, tingle, or feel numb, it’s your body telling you it needs help, and you should listen.”

Arizona Coyotes enter rebuild mode with 3 first-round picks

T

hree weeks ago, the Arizona Coyotes had a busy night in the first round of the 2022 NHL Draft with three picks — tied for most in the league with the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Coyotes are in full rebuild mode. Not only have they examined the future of their roster, but also of the franchise since the June announcement that a new arena will be built in Tempe after problems with the Gila River Arena. For now, they will play in the ASU Multi-Purpose Arena.

From the new location, the Coyotes will closely follow Logan Cooley’s career at the University of Minnesota. Arizona selected the center with the third pick in the draft. He already started training at the Ice Den in

Scottsdale at the Coyotes’ development camp but will spend time in the NCAA before turning professional.

The other two picks come from Canada. During draft night, the Coyotes traded to move up for the 11th

pick, choosing center Conor Geekie out of Strathclair, Manitoba. Arizona also traded up for the 28th pick to select Maveric Lamoureux, who went viral on social media for an awkward moment from his parents.

On July 11, all three players were introduced alongside Coyotes general manager Bill Armstrong, who showed excitement about the rebuild.

“We felt really, really good about the fact that Logan was there at (pick No. 3) for us,” Armstrong said. “Then, we were able to move to get to Conor and then Maveric was our last one where we moved up with the Edmonton pick and it all worked out. You want to walk out of the draft with players that you love, not like, and we were able to do that.”

Cardinals welcome fans to training camp ahead of the 2022 season

T

he Arizona Cardinals are inviting all fans to their open training camp practices at State Farm Sta-

dium.

The first open practice will be Saturday, July 30, from 1 to 3 p.m. as part of the NFL’s Back Together Saturday initiative.

Fans can reserve free tickets at azcardinals.com/camptix, and individuals can get up to four tickets per practice. Fans will be required to show their digital tickets for entry into the stadium.

The ticket zone is located on the east concourse, outside section 135. Call 602-379-0102 or log onto azcardinals. com/tickets for more information.

The team practice on July 30, as well as Saturday, Aug. 6, are scheduled as

the annual Red & White Practice. There will be open seating available on the stadium’s east side in the lower level for fans to watch the players on the field.

Additional lower bowl seating will be provided for the two special practice events.

At the Kids Interactive Zone, fans ages 5-12 will have the opportunity to interact with the players and engage in activities. Activities include a quarterback toss, 40-yard dash and mini-field goal kick. All children who wish to participate must be accompanied by an adult or guardian and sign a release.

Children will have the opportunity to get autographs by players after practices along the lower field walls. Big Red and Cardinal cheerleaders will also be signing autographs on the south bridge.

Wristbands will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at the Chil-

dren’s Autograph Experience table at the entrance of the Kids Interactive Zone.

The Children’s Autograph Experience will not be available on Back Together Saturday or the Red & White Practice.

In addition, fans can snap selfies in front of team-themed backdrops and oversized props at several selfie-stations located throughout the stadium. Stadium concessions will be open for food and beverages, offering classic fare and new items ahead of the 2022 season.

Cardinals merchandise will be available at the Arizona Cardinals Team Shop by Hyundai gate 2 for purchase.

All concession and team shop sales are cashless.

Parking will be available on the east side of the stadium and will open 60 minutes prior to the scheduled start of practices. Guests are advised to use the green entry off 91st Avenue.

For the two special events, Back Together Saturday and the Red & White Practice, additional parking will be available on the west side of the stadium.

Fans will enter State Farm Stadium through Bud Light Gate 3 located on the east side of the stadium or the Arizona Cardinals Team Shop at the north end near Hyundai Gate 2. For practices on July 30 and Aug. 6, fans can enter through BetMGM Gate 1 on the west side of the stadium. Gates will open 30 minutes before the start of practice.

“I’ve been looking forward to getting on the ice since the draft,” Cooley said. “I’ve been wanting to skate with all the other prospects and the people that have been invited to this camp and getting to know everyone, so I’m really looking forward to getting out there.”

Lamoureux did not practice due to undisclosed reasons but took advantage of the opportunity “to watch the guys” and “try to learn.”

It was not an easy start to his NHL tenure for Geekie. The Canadian prospect was injured in the first practice of development camp after bumping into the boards on a challenge with a teammate. Before going on the ice, he showed excitement to reunite with someone from his province.

“I think for me rooming with Ben McCartney is pretty cool to me being

a Manitoba boy,” Geekie said. “He’s gone through it; he knows what it takes. One of the hardest workers I’ve known and played against, so again, like Bill (Armstrong) always says,

you got tons of resources here. It is a very special place, and I’m looking forward to using them all.”

Geekie certainly took advantage of his time and the Coyotes resources

in camp and signed a three-year entry-level contract July 18, the team announced two days later.

While Coyotes fans will not see some of their latest draft picks in team gear this season, Armstrong told Cronkite News what he expects from the three players while they still develop and the franchise goes through its rebuild.

“They’ve gotta grow a little bit, they’ve gotta go back to their junior clubs and college clubs, have good years, and then we’ll evaluate after the season,” Armstrong said. “We were really excited just about the potential that all three of them can have.

“Logan Cooley has got the ability to be the No. 1 center, and Geekie a No. 2, and the big man Maveric Lamoureux on the back side, at 6’7” … they’re hard to find.”

Imagine Schools strives for students to reach potential

hen Imagine Schools opened its first campus in Arizona in 2002, it had one key goal in mind: for every student to develop their character as much as their comprehension of the curriculum.

Twenty years later, Imagine Schools continues to embrace this core value at its 14 campuses throughout the state, including metropolitan locations in Phoenix and Mesa and as far west as Buckeye and southeast as Coolidge.

As noted by Frank Stirpe, director of operations and community development, the approximately 8,000 pre-K through 12th graders who attend the nonprofit public charter school are taught much more than the traditional three Rs. “Students learn the ABCs and 123s,

but we also focus on the whole child, so we also teach things like character development so that when they leave school, they will be productive members of our society,” he said.

Everyone who works at Imagine Schools shares these values and is empowered to be part of this learning process, he added.

Clara Thigpen, regional academic director, said in addition to using a standard based curriculum at the 13 brick-and-mortar campuses and one online academy, each Imagine Schools campus has autonomy to support individualized student learning through various instructional approaches.

West-MEC welcomes Spurgeon as superintendent

ollowing Greg Donovan’s departure from West-MEC, former Major League Baseball player Dr. Scott D. Spurgeon has stepped in as superintendent.

West-MEC is a career technical education public school district serving 12 public school communities in the north central and western portions of Maricopa County.

As incoming superintendent, Spurgeon will lead funding initiatives for programs and supervise methods of teaching, while staying abreast of current and future economic development trends. He will also maintain systems to ensure the school district’s financial health.

Along with his new career path, Spurgeon is also adjusting to his new home here in the Valley, where he recently moved from St. Louis in June.

“I am very excited about this oppor-

tunity,” Spurgeon said. “I am committed to continuing the tradition of academic excellence for West-MEC student and adult learnDr. Scott D. Spurgeon ers, and look forward to working with all our community stakeholders and collaborative partners to make the West-MEC experience No. 1 in America.”

In his last role as superintendent for Riverview Gardens School District, an urban district of 5,750 students located in St. Louis, Missouri, Spurgeon oversaw all district operations and led initiatives to connect students to technical and certificate careers opportunities.

In 2020, Spurgeon received the Missouri Association of School Administrators (MASA) Missouri State Su-

perintendent of the Year Award. The following year, Spurgeon was elected

by MASA membership to be one of five American Association of School Administrators Executive Governing Board members for a three-year term.

Spurgeon has taken the reins from Donovan, who served for more than 42 years in the education industry and 20 as West-MEC’s founding superintendent.

Spurgeon earned a Doctor of Education from St. Louis University, a Master of Educational Administration from Northeastern State University, and an education specialist degree from Oklahoma State University.

Previously, Spurgeon was a catcher, first baseman and designated hitter for the Houston Astros.

As an Arizona transplant, Spurgeon is poised to continue West-MEC’s mission of preparing students today for tomorrow’s careers. Spurgeon added, “The opportunities West-MEC provides for high school and adult students are second to none.”

Spurgeon said his goal in the coming weeks is to spend some time listening and learning from the West-MEC community, staff, businesses and industry partnerships to determine where WestMEC is at as a career-readiness institution. He added that he wants to get a thorough understanding of West-MEC to find out how to service the community in ways which have seen positive results.

“I’m very well known for strengthening collaborative and community connections to benefit the students, parents, staff, and the business and industry that we serve,” Spurgeon said.

“I also have a great strength in being what I call a convener of resources. We want to continue to provide credentialing and certifications and training and the program services that we need for our learners in our community. CC and Wireless Zone stores will donate 140,000 backpacks full of school supplies in the 10th annual School Rocks Backpack Giveaway.

The stores’ owner, Round Room LLC, has provided more than 1.2 million backpacks full of school supplies to children across the United States as they prepare for their school year.

From 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 1,200 stores nationwide will invite families to their locations to pick up a backpack filled with pencils, paper, a pencil box, folders, a ruler and glue.

One backpack per child present will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

In addition to the backpack donations, families can enter their students in a sweepstakes to win a $10,000 college scholarship through the giveaway’s Big Impact. Children in grades K-12 are eligible for entry and can be registered at their local TCC and Wireless Zone stores during the School Rocks Backpack Giveaway event.

Five scholarships will be awarded to randomly selected winners.

“For the School Rocks Backpack Giveaway to reach its 10th edition is

‘Game Show’ invites theatergoers to become studio audience

rowing up, most viewers had their favorite game show, whether it involved newlyweds, shoppers, audience member contestants or trivia geniuses. Watching at home, these fans laughed along at corny jokes, tried to answer tough trivia questions, and pictured themselves playing the games featured on TV. Arizona Broadway Theatre’s production of Jeffrey Finns’ and Bob Walton’s show “Game Show” provides an interactive theater experience while giving fans a glimpse at some of the action backstage.

The production will run from Friday, July 29, to Sunday, Aug. 14.

The show is set during a “live broadcast” of a fictional game show, in which the drama behind the scenes between the host and crew comes to light.

During the production, viewers become studio audience members, with some being called to play trivia-based games and win prizes.

The production stars Jamie Michael Parnell as game show host and former soap opera star Troy Richards; Tim Shawver as director Cliff Andrews; Lionel Ruland as executive producer Tyler Scott; Melody Lieberman as line producer Ellen Ryan; Tyler Mell as assistant producer and warm-up man Steve Fox; Isaac Wesley Wilson and Darren Scott Friedman as cameramen Gerry Smith and Joe Maguire; and Bennett Curran as production assistant Johnny Wilderman.

The show is being directed by Ken Urso, a director, actor, teaching artist and dramaturge who has worked with theaters across the country.

“Never the Sinner,” “Always… Patsy Cline,” “The Producers,” “Matilda the Musical” and “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged).”

In 2014, he directed the world premiere of “The House of Murgatroyd,” an adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Ruddygore,” for the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Harrogate, England.

He is currently in the process of co-founding a new theater company in Santa Rosa, California.

Urso’s first stint with Arizona Broadway Theatre (ABT) was in summer 2021 for “The Spitfire Grill,” in which he acted as assistant director.

He hasn’t directed any production like “Game Show” before, but as an actor in New York, he was part of an interactive show called “Gay Camp” for six years.

“It was like playing tennis with the audience,” Urso said. “They will hit something at you, and you have to be

able to hit it right back.”

He said “Game Show” has brought back memories of game shows he grew up watching as a kid.

The show is set in the 1970s and is inspired by a number of popular game shows from that time.

“I grew up watching the Game Show Network,” Urso said. “I was watching these shows like ‘The Price is Right,’ ‘Let’s Make a Deal’ and even ‘Match Game.’ I think it’s so nostalgic. It doesn’t matter how old you are. You could have grown up watching it live or as reruns. There’s just something about that time period, the cheesiness of the game show hosts, the contestants just being so excited. I thought it was a great opportunity to have a lot of fun.”

The hair, makeup, costume pieces such as bell bottoms and slang from the time period will help create the illusion of it being in the ’70s.

For this production, it was important

to find actors who have strong improv skills, especially for roles such as show host Troy Richards. Urso said many of the actors in the show will engage with the crowd.

“There are portions of the script that just say, ‘Interact with the audience,’” Urso said.

The show uses video projections to create the illusion that it is being shot live, with moments where audience members appear on camera.

The cameramen do the taping along with acting in the show.

For rehearsals, Urso invited guests from the ABT staff to come in and interact with the cast like a studio audience.

“There is a very specific story that is told,” Urso said. “There is a backstory that is going on while the show is filming, so that’s pretty set. But these moments where it’s the lighting round, we have to practice being open and responding to what the audience gives us.”

Viewers have a chance to learn about the romances and power dynamics within the show in scenes where the characters interact with each other.

“Every time we go to the commercial break, you see the story play out onstage in front of you,” Urso said. “The characters aren’t aware that the audience is watching that, but it’s happening.” PT

It’s important to live loved in unloving times faith, hope and love. The shepherdess moved from living to be loved to living from being loved. There’s a big difference there.

The king’s unconditional love transformed the shepherdess’ mindset about herself. She thought, “I’m ugly.” He thought, “You’re beautiful.”

She thought, “I have a terrible past.”

He thought, “You have a great future.” She thought, “I’m poor. I have no money.” He said, “You’re wealthy.

I’ll give you ornaments of gold.” She thought, “I’m a lowly shepherdess.”

He thought, “You’re a queen.” She thought, “I’m unclean from sin.” He thought, “You are now whiter than snow.” She thought, “I was condemned and ostracized by my family.” He thought, “There’s no condemnation in my family.” She thought, “I’m unworthy.” He thought, “You are worthy.” She thought, “My house is a dirty field.” He thought, “Your house is now the king’s chambers.”

She thought, “I’m bad.” He thought, “You’re good.”

The four basic human needs for peo-

ple to prosper in their souls are significance, acceptance, love and security.

Most people live to be significant, not from being significant; to be accepted, rather than from being accepted; to be loved, rather than from being loved; to be secure, rather than from being secure. That’s where the shepherdess was living before meeting the king.

After the transformational encounter with the king, she moved to living significant, accepted, loved and secure.

And how her soul prospered. Why? She had the correct IP address. So, what does IP mean? It’s living from your God-given identity and purpose, rather than for some human-made fake identity and purpose. When you know your worth, you will stop giving discounts.

ere’s a thought for you: Love is the irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired.

One of the Scriptures’ most influential and insightful books is the Song of Songs. It is a love story of two real-life characters and their relationship that happened long ago. One was a sun-beaten shepherdess at the bottom of the social spectrum. Her life and choices had beaten her up. She had given up on most anything other than the worst happening to her.

The other character was a king named Solomon. He was at the top end of the social spectrum. He ruled one of the most powerful kingdoms the world has ever seen. As the shepherdess saw him, she was overwhelmed by his persona, but, in her mind, the king would never be overwhelmed by her

persona. Hint: Be careful when talking to yourself, because you’re listening.

What happens next is recorded for eternity for us to get a glimpse into the wonders and essence of God. Solomon sees the shepherdess and is ravished by her. He saw in her what she could never see in herself. Solomon’s attraction wasn’t physical. The years and her background had taken some of that away. Nevertheless, Solomon recognized her value, essence and potential royalty even though she wasn’t a queen. He loved her… “even though.” That’s what true godly love is.

The Hebrew words in Song of Songs illuminate a type of love that is much more the world’s type of love. The original language reveals words like passion, ravished, fervent, desire, intimate, longing, wonder, splendor, reckless holiness and total abandonment.

It took a “Solomon” who loved her unconditionally to awaken the sun-worn shepherdess to her value, potential and future. His “reckless” faith, hope and love awakened her

The Bible says we can love because God first loved us. Just like the shepherdess and King Solomon, we awaken to our actual worth, identity and value by God awakening us to what we mean to God. We don’t deserve it. We can’t earn it. Our part is to believe it and then receive it, just like the shepherdess did.

Why do we need to know God loves us? Pastor Mike Bickel said: “We will never have more affection or passion for God than we understand that He has for us. Likewise, we will never be more committed to God than we understand that He is committed to us.”

Cardinals, State Farm send 241 students to the nation’s capital

s part of the state’s Civics Matters Arizona program, the Cardinals partnered with State Farm to send 241 students and 30 chaperone teachers on an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. The students, who are entering grades 9-12, represented 46 Arizona schools, 20 school districts, 11 cities and four counties.

While at the nation’s capital, the group attended multiple workshops while also touring historical landmarks such as Arlington National Cemetery, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Capitol Hill and the Smithsonian National Museum.

They also visited the memorials honoring Martin Luther King Jr., George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

For Cardinals Chief People Officer Shaun Mayo, the initiative, which spawned from a conversation between team owner Michael Bidwell and Gov. Doug Ducey, fell perfectly in line with the three pillars of what the Cardinals try to be as an organization — a championship team on the field, a champion in the community, and an overall championship organization.

“It played right into our social justice initiatives,” Mayo said. “We know that a lot of things happen locally, and so it was a cool way to try to get students inspired about getting involved in their local communities to help make a positive change. A lot of that was the inspiration; our continuing commitment to the community and figuring out ways to utilize our assets to really do good in the community.”

its team plane to transport the group to Washington, D.C. Mayo said putting the trip together and getting to see the response was incredibly rewarding.

Mayo said for many of the students on board, it was their first time having been on a plane. Others had never even been out of the state before.

“It is some of the most rewarding work that we do, is anytime we get an opportunity to really impact the community or impact the future,” he said. “It always feels great to be able to be a small part of hopefully making a positive difference in anyone’s life that we impacted. The work we do in the community is so important to the fabric of our organization that it’s just super, super rewarding.”

Mayo said he sees many of these students using this experience as a motivator to get involved in their communities.

“The relationships and the friendships that were formed, I believe, will last a lifetime,” he said. “I believe that

this trip has inspired several of them to potentially get involved at a deeper level in their communities. … When I look at some of the feedback from the students, some of this probably changed their perspective, in terms of the role that they play in their local communities.”

The experience also featured some star-studded guests. At the send-off event at 44th Street Station, the team’s entire rookie class, as well as DeAndre Hopkins, made appearances. Mayo said the superstar wide receiver hung around with the students for about 30 or 45 minutes.

“We’re just excited to be able to provide that experience for folks and get them up close and personal with one of our players,” Mayo said. “He took all of the attention pages when he showed up to the events. I know they were super excited about it.”

Isaac Morales, one of the 241 students who took part in the trip, said if given the opportunity, he would abso-

lutely do it again.

“It was a very nice experience,” said Morales, 14. “(Washington, D.C.) was really beautiful. I loved looking at the memorials and the museum, so it was really amazing.

“I feel like it was a good opportunity for people to learn about the government and get a chance to explore and learn more about our history.”

Morales is very appreciative of the Cardinals for having put this together and giving him this opportunity.

“I’m really grateful that they were able to give me this opportunity and let me be able to explore and learn more about the government and about many memorials and museums,” he said.

Mayo said he is very appreciative of the sponsors for the event. Along with State Farm, Chicanos Por La Causa, Arizona Public Service, Raza Development Fund and Greater Phoenix Leadership all provided funding for the trip.

“We could not have done it without their help and support,” Mayo said.

Not only is this something the Cardinals organization plans to do in the future, Mayo said he sees this as an annual event.

“I think our vision is that we can do this year after year and continue to impact close to 250 students and 30 teachers,” he said. “We have 288 seats on that plane, so I think the goal is to fill it up every year, take a group out, hopefully get them educated, interested, inspired, empowered, related to getting involved in the local community.

“That’s where we believe that change happens in each local community. Our goal is to fill (the team plane) up every single year and do this over and over and over again, as long as possible.” PT
