leven years after shattering his C5 vertebrae in a diving accident, Joseph Martinez is hoping fellow Peoria residents will help him ease his transportation burden. Paralyzed from the chest down, the 35-year-old Martinez has set up a GoFundMe to raise $15,000 for a wheelchair-accessible vehicle. As of July 17, the public has donated $3,800 through https://bit.ly/JoeMartinezWheelchair. “I didn’t realize how many people around me were so willing to help,” he said.

Having a vehicle would shorten his three-hour commute to and from work at Peckham, a national passport information center, and allow him to become more independent. “Though I live in Peoria, the job is off of the I-17 and Thunderbird Road,” said Martinez, who is considered paraplegic because he has limited use of his arms and hands. n collaboration with city information and technology staff, the Peoria Police Department was able to develop an updated interactive police incident map. The police incident map represents a majority of reported police department incidents over the past 180 days. In addition to seeing police incidents, the map provides the community the ability to filter information in order to look at their particular neighborhood or area of interest. This isn’t the first interactive incident

map Peoria police have had at their disposal. An upgrade was in order after the most recent map broke and stopped speaking to the computer system a little over a year ago. Deputy Chief of Support Services Douglas Steele said upgrading the map was something he was tasked with by his chief when he was promoted to deputy. “I think what we’re always going to be looking at is if we can keep updating our systems and software and ease of use for citizens to look at,” Steele said. “This seems to be functioning fairly well and seems to be meeting our needs currently.” Another new feature is the ability for a

citizen to submit a tip should they have information regarding a particular crime. “If you have an interest in your neighborhood or you happen to be interested in your council district and you want to see what’s going on in your particular area, I think you can relatively quickly look at what’s happened in the last 30 days or the last six months of what’s going on in our particular area,” Steele said.
