Mental illness may play role in Adams trial BY MAXIMO AGUILAR LAWLOR Peoria Times Staff Writer
Hate and mental illness may play a role in the trial of Michael Paul Adams, who was indicted in connection with the stabbing death of 17-year-old Elijah Al-Amin of Glendale at a Peoria Circle K. Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery hosted a press conference announcing the July 10 indictment of Adams, who said he stabbed Al-Amin because he was listening to rap music. He said there is no evidence that Adams is part of a hate group, but nevertheless issued a strong statement about crime in general.
“proactive rather than reactive... (and to) protect himself and the community from the victim.” Al-Amin was stabbed in the right side of the neck, Montgomery said. “Our community has lost forever what Elijah would have contributed, and it is his memory, his name that we should acknowledge and remember,” Montgomery said. “Elijah Al-Amin did nothing to warrant the brutal and senseless attack that took his life in the early morning hours just one week ago from everything we have learned about him since that attack.”

That impacts them, their family and represents a violation of what we expect from one another living together in a civil society.” Montgomery said Arizona lost Al-Amin in a wrong and unjustified manner. Adams told detectives the rap music made him feel threatened, and not the victim himself. Adams continued and said he needed to be

Vector control specialist Jason Gillette checked a funky-looking mosquito trap hanging from a tree. The gallon cooler is filled with dry ice and poked with holes that emit carbon dioxide — mimicking respiration and attracting mosquitoes that are then blown into a cylindrical net by a hand-size fan. “We catch mosquitoes year-round,” said Gillette, gathering the trap — one of 29 he collected for the trip back to the Maricopa County vector lab. “This season seems like it’s a little busy.” Not only is the mosquito season an active one, but the county lab has seen a significant number of traps test positive for West Nile virus and St. SEE MOSQUITOES PAGE 4
