Citizens helping PD acquire bomb detection K-9

With the Peoria Police Department’s K-9 unit limited to patrol and drug detection, officers are looking to expand the services they provide by acquiring an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) dog.

But with a $15,000 cost to acquire such a K-9 standing in the way, a group of Peoria citizens has stepped in to lend a hand.

The Peoria Police Citizens’ Academy Alumni (PPCAA) — a nonprofit charitable, fundraising organization dedicated to supporting the police department, the Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (S.A.L.T.) program and the Peoria Police

Citizens’ Academy — is working to raise these funds.

Currently, the police department employs three patrol K-9s: Faris, 4; Roco, 9; and Quinzee, 3, all of whom are Belgian Malinois. The dogs are cross-trained in drug detection, according to Officer Brandon Sheffert, a spokesman for the department.

Adding an EOD K-9 “would help us in our efforts to provide full services to our residents,” Sheffert told Peoria Times.

“We do not currently have an EOD dog and we utilize other agencies for this. This would give us the ability to handle these functions ourselves.”

And according to Sheffert, the EOD

As part of its continued efforts, PPCAA has teamed up with local restaurant Kawaii Sushi and Asian Cuisine to hold a fundraiser. Both Kawaii locations — 6530 W. The city of Peoria has settled a lawsuit with the alleged fourth victim of a former city worker who was convicted in 2009 of inappropriate conduct with several other minors.

Mark Johnstone, a former groundskeeper at Cheyenne Elementary School and a part-time city recreation worker, pleaded guilty a decade ago to one count of child molestation and two counts of attempted child molestation. He is serving a 19-year sentence.

incident, which she reported occurred in 2005. No new charges are expected for Johnstone.

The three previous victims settled with both the city and the Peoria Unified School District (PUSD) after they filed a $3 million claim in 2011, but the total settlement was never disclosed.

Those incidents reportedly happened between June 1 and August 3, 2007.

“Given the private and sensitive nature of the allegations and the fact that the plaintiff was a minor at the time of the alleged molestation, the city cannot disclose further details,” Peoria City Attorney Vanessa P. Hickman told Peoria Times. “The plaintiff filed her lawsuit in September of 2017 and the payment terms of the settlement are confidential.”

Hickman, who was not city attorney at the time, said the incident with the fourth victim allegedly occurred during the city’s after-school program.

“The plaintiff filed a lawsuit alleging she was molested while a participant in the city’s AM/PM program in the fall of 2005,” she said.

Peoria’s AM/PM program offers elementary school-age children at 22 PUSD elementary schools a variety of activities such as arts and crafts, games, events, field trips during school breaks, and outdoor activities.

The original lawsuit alleged that Johnstone groomed the 6-year-old students for sexual activity. Johnstone would have the victim sit on his lap,

and then he would hug her and give her candy before molesting her, the lawsuit claimed. The fourth alleged victim claimed “similar aspects to the original filings,” Hickman said.

The suit claimed the city as well as PUSD knew of Johnstone’s behavior but failed to investigate.

The city and district, however, both stated that they take allegations of abuse seriously.

Since the original allegations surfaced, the city has increased employee background checks, but maintains intensive checks have always been performed on all staff.

“We are extremely grateful for the efforts of the PPCAA and the Peoria community,” Sheffert said.

But these efforts go back further.

“In the past … we purchased things like a drone for the department,” explained Elise Slagle, PPCAA vice president. “As far as K-9, we’ve done obstacles for their K-9 training facility, we purchased a bulletproof vest for one of their K-9s, and then we do various other things throughout the year just to show support in that way, like providing water for the department, meals for officers on Christmas Eve, just all kinds of things.”

The current efforts were born from PPCAA members’ attendance during K-9 training, where they learned the department is still lacking its own dedicated explosive detection dog, Slagle said.

She and her colleagues at PPCAA ultimately sought the support of Kawaii, as they had already established a relationship with the West Valley Asian restaurant.

“Kawaii has shown support by donating food to us to provide for the department in the past, so we just reached out to them to see if they wanted to do a 20% restaurant night, seeing that they’ve done similar efforts in the past for Las Brisas PTSA,” she explained.

According to restaurant spokesman Mathias Spear, accepting PPCAA’s offer was a given for owner Kelly Yu and her family, whose operations are heavily integrated in the community.

“Her warm heart and her caring heart and the family’s kind of living in the community, they really have a

Peoria Times community approach to working with people,” Spear said.

The restaurant has worked with everything from the Sunrise Mountain High School music program to the local fire department, according to Spear, though youth sports and police tend to be a common theme.

“Kawaii is someone that, and Kelly in particular, wants to help,” Spear said. “They are themselves a successful business, but they believe in giving back to the community.”

Supporting agencies like that of the police just makes sense, as the benefits come full circle, according to Spear.

“The police one is an easy one because they look after all of our safety and support our community, and provide security for not only us but for the business,” he explained.

Slagle agreed.

“It just seemed like something that we really would want to support for our community and obviously making it a safer place, so we decided to move forward with it,” she said.

Slagle estimated PPCAA is currently projected to have raised half of the $15,000 needed for the new K-9 through previous fundraising efforts.

“If it surpasses the number and that money was set aside for the K-9 unit — for example, if someone makes a donation and says, ‘We want this to go toward the bomb-sniffing dog’ — that money would stay in an account for K-9 to use in the future; it would just be put into our budget that way,” Slagle explained. “If there’s just general fundraising in the future, we do set that aside for future needs for them.”

Cooling stations and heat relief in Peoria

Starting in April, the city of Peoria began collecting water for the Heat Relief Network. This program creates awareness of the dangers from extreme heat, coordinates resources, and provides maps of the Heat Relief Network resources for those in need during the summer months. The ultimate goal of the Heat Relief Network is to prevent heat-related deaths. The city is encouraging people to donate bottled water to the Development Community Services Building (DCSB) from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Ducey vetoes Toma-supported criminal sentences legislation

Arizona prosecutors will keep their ability to stack charges against some criminal defendants to get an enhanced sentence.

Gov. Doug Ducey on June 7 vetoed legislation which would have limited the ability of prosecutors to charge some criminal defendants as serial offenders. The governor, in a one-line letter to legislative leaders, said he is concerned about “the unintended consequences that may arise from this

legislation and the affect these changes would have on victims.”

The move is a setback, not just for Rep. Ben Toma, R-Peoria, who championed the measure, but also for various interests ranging from criminal defense attorneys to Americans for Prosperity, an advocacy group financed by the Koch brothers who have pushed for criminal justice reform.

Arizona law always has allowed enhanced sentence for those who are repeat offenders.

The legislation that reached Du-

cey’s desk would not have changed that. But it would have spelled out that prosecutors may seek the longer sentences only for crimes for which someone actually has been tried and convicted prior to the new offense being charged.

The legislation drew sharp criticism from several county prosecutors.

Amelia Cramer, the chief deputy to Pima County Attorney Barbara LaWall, complained that the change would have resulted in people who commit multiple offenses over a short period of time — all before getting

caught — would end up with a prison term no longer than someone who is guilty of just one offense.

Yavapai County Attorney Sheila Polk said the legislation would “create a perverse result in the law.”

Toma, in pushing the measure, called the objections “definitely misleading.”

He said prosecutors want the ability to allege multiple prior offenses — and threaten extended prison terms — essentially to squeeze defendants into taking a plea deal.

“This is about leverage,” he said.

Lake Pleasant ‘exploding’ with Independence Day festivities

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF Pleasant Harbor Marina at Lake Pleasant will host its annual Celebrate America fireworks show on Wednesday, July 3. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. with fireworks at 9 p.m.

Located on the southeastern shores of Lake Pleasant, Pleasant Harbor Marina hosts this annual dramatic fireworks show, as well as food trucks and free activities for kids, including water slides, bounce houses and live music.

Abrazo Arrowhead wants cereal donations

Abrazo Health is planning its annual Healthy Over Hungry cereal drive, and this year the challenge has been issued: donate enough healthy cereal to fill the office of Abrazo Arrowhead Campus Chief Operating Officer Omar Pineda.

Considering that last year Abrazo Arrowhead Campus staff and Northwest Valley community members donated more than 1,000 pounds of cereal.

Those donations equaled an estimated 17,000 servings of cereal.

“Whole-grain cereal, when part of a healthy, balanced breakfast including dairy, fruit and lean protein, is a popular food item that experts say can easily address the hunger gap during the summer months when children are not in school,” Pineda said.

New water services director appointed

In May, Cape Powers was named the new director for Peoria’s water services department, where he will oversee more than 90 employees and a $38 million budget for the city.

As the new director, Powers will also oversee regulatory compliance, water rights, planning efforts water and wastewater operations, and sustainability programs.

“I am thrilled to be selected as Peoria’s water services director and I am looking forward to leading a team of outstanding individuals who provide superior service to residents on a daily basis,” Powers said.

Prior to this appointment, Powers was Peoria’s water services planning operations manager, where he led daily operations including maintenance, billing and customer service.

Before joining the city of Peoria, Powers was the vice president of construction and utilities for a private land

development firm, engineering manager for the city of Bellingham in Washington, and project manager for an engineering consulting firm.

He holds a Master of Business Administration from Western Washington University and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Washington State University.

Powers is also a licensed professional engineer in both Arizona and Washington, a member of the American Water Works Association and a past president of five homeowners’ associations and two nonprofits for community enhancement and arts.

“Cape’s extensive knowledge in the construction and utilities industries has been a huge asset to Peoria,” City Manager Jeff Tyne said. “We are happy to have him join our leadership team.”

PUSD hoping to fund key programs with override

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF The Peoria Unified School District governing board voted to adopt a resolution ordering all matters necessary for a 15% maintenance and operations (M&O) budget override election to be held on Tuesday, November 5.

If approved by voters, the M&O override would allow the district to fund new student and staff safety initiatives and continue to support the following programs: all-day kindergarten, arts education programs including band and chorus, assistant principals for every school, attraction and retention of the best teachers and staff possible, athletic programs, extra/co-curricular activities, gifted education, maintain class sizes, nurses/ health services at every school, physical education programs and reading programs.

The associated tax rate would amount to approximately $1.74 per $100 of assessed property valuation.

District voters first approved a 10% override in 1996 and renewed it again in 2001, 2006 and 2012. In 2015, voters approved a 13% override. The authorization lasts for seven years and phases out over the last two years if not renewed or replaced with another voter-approved initiative.

The deadline for submitting arguments with respect to the M&O override is 5 p.m. Friday, August 9.

D-Day calls to mind a seemingly forgotten word

It was the Sunday after D-Day 75 years ago and the Allied troops were hard at it across Europe.

In Italy, the U.S. Fifth Army ran into a wall of Nazi 88-millimeter and anti-tank guns about 40 miles outside of Rome.

In France, Isigny-sur-Mer and Trévières were on the verge of liberation.

At home, a Congressional committee passed the elements of the GI Bill, which would be signed into law

by President Franklin Roosevelt two weeks later.

Every page of every newspaper nationwide teemed with stories of the Second World War. “29th Division Battling Nazis In Normandy,” The Baltimore Sun told readers.

“Yanks Sealing Off Cherbourg,” declared the Los Angeles Times.

“Americans Engulf 3rd of Peninsula As Allies Attack 50-Mile Front,” the Atlanta Constitution reported.

You spent days reading old newspaper headlines this week and nights thinking about the ways of the world then, amid the Greatest Generation, and the ways of the world now.

You wondered how such a conflict would have been covered by today’s reporters, pale imitations of Ernie Pyle, Walter Cronkite and the war correspondents of the Writing 69th.

And you wondered what your fellow Arizonans would have made of the editorial atop the front page of the Arizona Daily Star.

“Are You Going To Help?” the headline asked.

Then the writer spoke of a concept so dead in 2019 America as to be almost laughable.

Sacrifice.

You may recall the word from the dictionary, a baseball broadcast or years gone by.

“These soldiers, our brothers, fathers, sons and friends, are making enormous sacrifices,” the writer explained. “Many of them will pay the supreme sacrifice today. And those who do not, will be fighting when they are exhausted and going hungry. Many of them will lie wounded by the roadsides waiting to be picked up. The big push is on at last.

“What can we do? We can help. We can give indispensable help. Every one of us can.”

The drive would last 27 days, beginning with an Orson Welles radio broadcast and a message from FDR. The ask was for our country’s citizens to invest $16 billion in World War II. They responded to the tune of $20 billion.

There were eight war drives in all.

They raised $185 billion from 85 million Americans — at a time when the U.S. population was 140 million.

Most of those dollars hurt, exactly as the editorial writer suggested.

“Do without something,” the story concluded. “Spend what you save for an additional bond even if it is a $25 bond that can be bought for $18.75.

Then you will be answering that question about what you can do … What sacrifice will you make?”

a year after that editorial; days after Adolf Hitler put a gun to his head. The world would stay free. Time marched forward.

Now it’s 75 years later and you read the old stories and wonder how the Americans of today would fare under the pressures exerted by war back then.

Would we post bond pictures on Facebook? Start a GoFundMe for the troops? Take military advice from Barbra Streisand and the Kardashians?

Or would we rise to the occasion in the face of a truly existential threat?

It is a question for a Sunday amid paying our respects to all those who sacrificed on our behalf. And a question we best pray America never again faces in what remains of our pillow-soft lifetimes.

Vinny’s Italian Sports Grill cuts ribbon in Peoria

Tom Canale was a real estate agent by trade.

Being that his family had no experience owning and operating restaurants, it may come as a surprise to find out that he jumped on the opportunity to take over a local Peoria establishment. Vinny’s Italian Sports Grill’s owner gave Canale that chance a year and a half ago.

Now, the journey to becoming a restaurateur has been solidified. On June 6, Canale and his wife Kari held a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Peoria Chamber of Commerce.

“I was a regular here, and I’d always half-jokingly told the owner, Vinny, that he should sell it to me. One day he surprised me and actually asked if I was serious. Now here I am,” Tom Canale said.

Formerly branded Cousin Vinny’s Pizza and Pasta, the restaurant had a “tired” atmosphere, according to Cana-

le, who was impressed with the food and regular community.

The pizza was already “excellent,” so he said there was very little to change. But he did add gourmet chicken wings — something he said a pizza and sports grill could not exist without — a brunch menu, and several televisions around the rooms so every customer can easily see the big game.

Extraordinary Rides: Mazda 6 Sedan Signature Package

The Mazda 6 is an excellent sedan.

It offers practical utility, sport performance, and a reasonable starting price of $22,000. The particular car we test drove was their Signature edition. It is supposed to be loaded with all the standard features, though we were charged extra for two items.

First was the red paint job, called “Soul Red Crystal.” That costs $595.

Next was an extra $75 fee for a cargo mat, which seems insulting on a top-line car. In any case, the total tab comes to a tide $36,435.

The base engine is a 187-horsepower unit, but the Signature edition gets a potent 227-horsepower turbo engine, which can be increased to

250 horsepower if premium gas is used. It’s hooked to a six-speed auto-

matic transmission that can be shifted manually with controls on the steer-

ing wheel. The materials and workmanship of the cabin are very nice.

The controls are easy to use once the master infotainment control knob is learned. The second-row seats have enough room for two full-size adults.

This car is a blast to drive. It’s quick, smooth and quiet. The cornering ability is there, and the brakes stop the vehicle in a hurry. There is nothing boring here. Fuel economy tested at 19 mpg in hard city driving.

But the highway figures were much better, with 28 mpg at 75 mph and 32 mpg at 65 mph.

While I find the Signature edition a bit pricey, there are cheaper versions of the model 6 sedan that offer the same amount of fun for less money with less fluff. Either way, this is a well-designed car.

This is what Father’s Day means to me…

It’s difficult to describe what fatherhood means to me. Being a father is more of a feeling. It’s a mixture of overwhelming happiness and pride. How you feel when your child achieves a goal or the pain you feel when they are hurting. You are a part of their journey. I want to protect and keep them safe — even in adulthood.

As fathers, we have a responsibility to ensure our kids are healthy, happy and positive contributors to society. When I see my children experiencing these things, there is a sense of accomplishment and happiness.

I always try to support their decisions and choices, regardless if I agree with them.

I believe it’s important to let them to fail while we’re still there to catch them when they fall. Fatherhood is a privilege.

Fathers are important. We are fixers and protectors. We fill an important role in the development of our children. Rough-and-tumble play comes with this. I always liked to take my kiddos out for bike rides and coach them in sports. I challenged and taught them to enjoy life and not be complacent. To experience life and treat people how they want to be treated. I love and am proud of my kids.

The great thing about being a dad is that there is always a funny story.

When I talk to other dads, I tell them to embrace every moment with their kids. They grow up so fast!

Fathers, be there for your kids’ award ceremonies and field trips. Get to know their friends and coach their teams. Just be with them and for them.

Vinny’s sells plenty of alcoholic drinks to go along with the Italian food, but Canale wants to differentiate the business from other sports bars. While many competitors will have big events, like reserving the facility for a big UFC or boxing match, he wants to always feature sports, while making it a more family-friendly atmosphere.

I believe it’s difficult to raise kids today. As a society, we have a lot of distractions that can have a negative impact on quality family time. Lead by example. We are role models for our children. They will model your behaviors whether you want them to or not. The choices we make in our lives directly affect our kids in their lives. Part of being a parent is making mistakes and learning from them. As I have become more experienced as a father, I have learned that it is better to help my kids find their own solutions instead of telling them how to fix something.

As a new father, you think you know what you are going to do and how you will handle most situations. And then you get into the situation and realize you have no clue. That’s the best part — learning on the fly. The highs and the lows are a part of the journey. As a new dad, I didn’t realize how much I would change, and how much I would learn from my kids. The role has taught me unconditional love and the importance of helping others. My kids continue to teach me about myself every day.

As we approach the actual day of Father’s Day, the day doesn’t mean much to me. I relish in the role of being a dad — every day. I enjoy having all of my kids together, whether it’s on Father’s Day or any day.

I have been a father for 28 years and I could not imagine my life without that role. Being a father means everything to me and has been my greatest source of achievement and pride. Celebrating in my children’s accomplishments and being with them on their journey is priceless.

That idea starts with the name.

“We put a lot of thought into the name.

We didn’t want to put bar because we want to make everybody in the community feel welcome, especially with family and kids,” Canale said. “When we get a new sign, I think we’re even going to take the ‘Italian Sports Grill’ part off of it, so we’re just Vinny’s from now on. I think that’s more catchy.”

International youth soccer camp coming to Peoria this July

Challenger Sports is coming to Peoria, and will bring with it a weeklong international soccer camp from July 8 through July 12.

Challenger Sports is a leading soccer camp company in North America and has been a provider of soccer camps for over 30 years. This year, the company launched its international soccer camps, which are intended to be innovative experiences that will “accelerate the learning process of young players,” according to its website.

Certified coaches from around the world will be present at the event and, according to Sean Lines, account manager for Challenger Sports, each one will bring a coaching background that is unique to their respective country.

“We have coaches from multiple countries — predominantly coaches from the United Kingdom, Brazil and the USA,” Lines said. Our coaches are

Councilmembers discuss Spring Training attendance

Spring Training attendance at Peoria Sports Complex this past spring decreased 10% over previous years.

So said Peoria City Council, who discussed the drop in attendance at a recent meeting.

Numerous issues impacted the drop, they said, including the loss of four regular season games due to Major League Baseball allowing the Seattle Mariners, who along with the San Diego Padres call Peoria Sports Complex home during Spring Training, to travel to Japan to open the season in mid-March. Weather also impacted attendance.

Though there were adverse effects, stadium officials, however, focused on creating fan activities such as a community-oriented game where residents’ tickets cost $1. Games featured some of the top prospects in both the Mariners and Padres Minor League system.

“2019 was one of the more unusual Spring Training seasons, with unpre-

dictable cold and rain,” said Blake Englert, Peoria Sports Complex’s operations manager.

“Major League Baseball had the Mariners travel to Japan, which gave us four vacant dates.”

Total attendance at Peoria Sports Complex reached 180,190 for 27 games this season, ranking as the fourth highest total in the 10 Peoria Sports Complex’s 2019 spring training numbers decreased 10% over the previous year. Those moments throughout the years have actually brought the players

closer together, the early foundation of what could prove an exciting season.

Teibo and the other seniors feel they have a legitimate shot to capture a state championship to finish off their high school careers come February.

But, there is a lot of basketball still to be played, including summer cham-

pionships and early-season practice.

The team looks ready to play at a high level right now, but coach Randy Lavender said the Coyotes are just getting started.

“I actually am expecting to get even better after all this, I don’t want to peak yet,” he said. “That comes later.

Kellis football ‘not the same’ with new motivation

The players know it. The coaches know it. Last year was tough for Raymond S. Kellis football. The Cougars went 0-10 in 2018, coach Stephen Hogg’s first season, losing by less than double-digits just one time.

However, rather than holding their collective heads down, Kellis graduated a large senior class, and the new crop of players is ready to rebuild toward the success of seasons past.

The Cougars are no strangers to winning seasons. Kellis posted backto-back winning records in 2016 and 2017 under coach Shawn Copeland.

He is now in his first year with nearby Verrado.

Hogg has been impressed by a talented group of upcoming juniors, many of whom spent last season on the bench or at the JV level. Watching them fly to the ball in drills and play with much effort, he sees a lot of promise in a group that has the potential to get back to winning ways.

in five or more already. Rather than a competition, where he and the rest of the staff do not have time to critique and work on techniques in consecutive games, they can take their time.

The staff, when practicing on the team’s field, can run a play back or give specific advice to a player, which they cannot with restricted time at tournaments. The Cougars are also focusing on “real” football, which they hope pays dividends when the regular season begins in August.

“With a young team, I need as much of that coaching time as I can get,” Hogg said.

One issue for Kellis’ roster number still pales in comparison to other teams in the area. The team recently hosted a middle school camp, which saw over 40 future Cougar prospects come out.

But senior quarterback Kalen Jordan estimated there were only about 50 current Kellis students at initial practices for the immediately upcoming season. The one advantage he mentioned to a having small group is the chemistry and familiarity of each player with their teammates.

He also sees athletic ability and new attitudes throughout the Cougar lineup. They are focused on improvement among the players who are there now, and hopefully rebounding toward past glory.

“The way everyone is rebounding is inspiring. Nobody’s focusing on last year now. We’re putting a new playbook in, and it’s a different group,” Jordan said. “I know I’m excited.”

I realize not everyone wants to be likable. But I think most people would rather be likable. This article is for those of us who want to grow in our likability. I want to make us aware of the amazing power of likability.

When I say likability, I’m not talking about people using likability for their own ego-driven ends.

That repels most people. I’m talking about likability with honor. Likability is where people like and respect you

for just being you. Likability is others centered, not self-centered. Likability is awareness in action.

Let’s explore some suggestions about likability from life coach Jonathan Wells. There’s nothing new in these suggestions. We have the knowledge of likeability. The key is in being intentional in applying these suggestions in everyday life.

The first suggestion is to intentionally say please and thank you. The Bible says love is not rude. People turn off when others turn on their rudeness.

When you want something, say please.

When someone does something nice for you, say thank you. When we say please or thank you, we are recognizing there is someone else on the earth besides us that matters. We need a bit more of that these days.

Secondly, follow the golden rule.

Jesus said it. “Treat others the way you would want to be treated.” There would be no murder, no gossip, no backbiting and no stealing if everyone applied this. Then people can spend time going forward rather than unpacking emotional baggage from being treated wrongly in the past.

Thirdly, work with others. Help and serve someone, with no agenda. For example, make it easier for others at the grocery store by getting your cart out of the aisle. Work with others, not against others. Value people and they will value you. Make a deposit and get a return.

The next suggestion is smile and smile often. Smiling tends to elevate your mood. Smiling also lifts the spirits of those you smile at. If you don’t believe me, try this little experiment.

For an entire day, before you say a word to anyone, smile first. Notice their reaction. Most will smile back.

That’s likability.

Here’s a hard one. Say “I’m sorry.”

If you wrong someone, or if you make a mistake, or if you hurt another person (intentionally or unintentionally), apologize for it. Don’t justify or play the blame game. We can’t fix a personal problem if we are always fixing the blame on others.

One of the best ways to be viewed as more likable is to be a good listener. It’s not easy. Listening is often the only thing needed to help someone.

Listening tells others you are genuinely interested in them as a person. Who doesn’t like that?

Consider the power of a sincere compliment. Have you ever received an unexpected compliment? It was nice, wasn’t it? In a world that tends to be overly critical, a sincere compliment can be very encouraging. Your mood should not dictate your manners. That’s likability in action.

And finally, laugh! Laughing is an instant vacation. Everyone likes to laugh. Laughing releases endorphins.

That makes you feel happy and relaxed. When you laugh, you are encouraging others to laugh, too. When you contribute to the happiness of others, most people can’t help liking you.

Think about it. Your laugh may be for others also.

There you go! The world is filled with nice people. If you can’t find one … be one. Make your day better by making other’s days better by the power of likability.

‘Idol’s’ Wade Cota readies hometown show

Wade Cota is greeted warmly in Tim Finnegan’s Irish Restaurant and Pub, the one-time home of his open mic nights.

Things have changed since the imposing 27-year-old took fourth on “American Idol” this year. He is recognized everywhere he goes. He makes sure his hair is properly flipped, and he’s picture-perfect before he heads out.

On Thursday, June 20, Cota will sing the national anthem just before the D-backs vs. Dodgers game. He admits he’s nervous about singing a cherished song like that. Cota is mainly excited about his show with Wyves, Chad Rubin and Michael Coughlin on Saturday, June 29.

“I plan to play the covers I sang on ‘American Idol’ and some of my original stuff,” Cota said.

He is working on an album of original songs. Cota’s happy with the two completed songs, one of which will be

released before his Marquee Theatre show.

Cota grew up a music fan. His mother, Terri, formerly managed bands and was the woman behind several music festivals in Arizona. He has a musical family as well.

“My mom put music on to everything,” Cota said. “I would do my math homework to Pantera and try to do it as fast as I could, to stick with the music.”

His time on “American Idol” was bittersweet. He didn’t care for the stress of “Hollywood Week.” Flying

to Hawaii for the show was disturbing.

“As I was flying over the ocean, I was disgusted at what I saw at 30,000 feet in the air,” he said. “I’m looking at the ocean and I could see literally just miles of garbage. It’s disgusting. It made me feel really, really bad about the world these days.

“It was floating on top of the ocean for like a half hour. It wasn’t going away.”

Cota was also unhappy with the songs that were chosen for him. He said they weren’t in his wheelhouse, except for Joe Cocker’s rendition of “With a Little Help from My Friends.”

For his friends, Cota counts Alejandro Aranda, this year’s runner up.

Cota is taking his career one step at a time. Record labels are expected to attend his Marquee show.

“I want them to see that, ‘Holy crap.

This guy can sell out a 2,500-person theater in his hometown,” said Terri Cota, his mother.

the iron’s hot. I don’t want to be one of those people who had their claim to fame on ‘Idol’ and then did nothing with it.”

Cota and his mother are pleased “American Idol” didn’t send the top finishers on tour. Cota doesn’t want to spend three months playing other people’s material. Instead, he can perform original songs on his own tour.

“I want to do my own songs now,” he said. “I don’t want to be on tour for three months, until they’re already casting for the next season. Then, I risk the chance of people forgetting about me.”

Fans won’t easily forget him. Besides his own show, Cota is scheduled

to perform a few songs with Luke Bryan Thursday, June 13, at Ak-Chin Pavilion.

“I’m going to have the mic, so it’s going to be a great promotion for the show,” he said with a laugh. “It’s going to be amazing. We connected, I think.”

Parachute simplifies sound before its U.S. tour

Parachute has been known for its heartfelt, sax-infused pop sound since its 2009 debut, “Losing Sleep.”

Now the Virginia-bred band has gone through a facelift, focusing on raw instrumentation and graceful electronic flourishes on its latest release, which is self titled.

“The songs themselves are so much simpler than our previous songs,” singer Will Anderson said. “The way Jacquire King, our producer, did it, everything is so powerful. It’s really sparse. There’s a lot of space and not that much stuff going on, compared to old stuff. In the end, you figure out how to make less stuff sound bigger.”

Anderson says the songs translate well live. The band plays the Crescent Ballroom on Saturday, June 15.

“We’re in a better spot than we were with our old sound,” he says.

The change in direction, the newly wed Anderson said, was organic. Parachute knew it wanted to evolve soni-

cally for the last three years. The band was referred to King and he “unlocked the new stuff that people hear.”

“He has a reputation for pushing his artists to home in on what he wants to do in an interesting way,” Anderson said. “The change was definitely a conscious decision. We didn’t know what exactly what would come out of it. The way he does things is really refreshing.

“He’s really easy going and really pushed us to let it be. We used to have a very regimented way of recording things, making sure it’s perfect. He was like, ‘Hey, we don’t need to edit it too much. There doesn’t need to have too much shine. We’d just capture the performance and leave it be.”

King was adamant about leaving the human elements into it. Parachute spoke to many producers, including one who specialized in EDM and programming. Parachute wanted to pull the human side through.

“It’s a nice extreme on both ends,” Anderson said. “It’s fun to play a bunch of new songs, instead of the same songs we’ve been playing thou-

sands of times.”

What remains is Parachute’s honest lyrics. Anderson is proud his fans understand their importance.

“I love lyrics,” he said. “What’s nice is our fans have an appreciation for them, too. They’re not lost on them.

I really work on lyrics and keep them simple. People get that affirmation from them. It’s worth the time and the effort to refine those lyrics.

“This record is really personal. I did everything myself. It’s nice to know I can hang my hat on it. These lyrics are coming from me, not a roomful of professional writers.”

The first single and opening track was “Young,” with lyrics “After all this growing up/I’m only good at being young.”

“We’d just gotten off the road, and I’d sold all my stuff and moved from Nashville to New York to be near my then-girlfriend, now-wife,” Anderson recalled.

“The song just spilled out of me one day, and it came from a place of feeling terrified of growing up but also want-

ing to get to the point of feeling more settled in my life, and not so out at sea.”

On the piano-laced “Ocean,” Parachute looks back before Anderson moved to New York. “Had It All” is a song about regret.

“Writing that song, I put myself back in one of those situations from my past where I’d messed up and hurt somebody,” Anderson said. “It’s sort of my big apology into the unknown, a way of getting out what I’d say to them now if I ever got to see them again.”

Midwestern celebrates master’s and doctoral graduates

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF Late last month, Midwestern University celebrated the graduation of master’s and doctoral degree recipients who are beginning their professional careers in health care.

Over 1,600 graduates crossed the stage to receive their graduate hoods in ceremonies held on University campuses in Glendale and Downers Grove, Illinois, representing 11 health care specialty degrees across 10 Midwestern colleges.

Peoria girl wins $529 for 529 Day

BY PEORIA TIMES STAFF The Arizona Family College Savings Program (AZ 529) recently presented two giant checks in the amount of $529 to the latest young recipients of future college savings plans.

Peoria resident Anastasia Phares, 5, is one such recipient.

Phares aspires to become a doctor when she gets older. Her prize was sponsored by the College Savings Bank, one of the financial providers for the AZ 529.

The event was held at the Phoenix Children’s Museum to celebrate the occasion and highlight national 529 Day (held annually on May 29) for friends and family of the winners, along with the general public and media.

The youth were honored with oversized checks, photos with 529 mascot “Penny,” and a day filled with free festivities at the Phoenix Children’s Museum.

According to a College Savings Plans Network survey, only 20% of Americans understand how a 529 college savings plan works. AZ 529 wanted to shed some light on its program by hosting the event and awarding Phares a $529 head start to her college savings plan on 529 Day. “Knowing that we have a chance to give her the opportunity to go to college when she gets older means everything,” said Sonya Ramos, Phares’ mom. “I want to be able to give her the world and every opportunity to reach any goal she has. So, winning the $529 gives us hope that we will be able to provide our daughter with the education she needs to accomplish any goal her heart desires.”

The AZ 529 is a state-managed program, offering a tax-advantaged way to put money aside for college. Participants of the program receive a dollar-for-dollar tax deduction, up to $2,000 or $4,000 depending on filing status. Money earned over time

will be tax-free if used for a variety of educational expenses and can be used at accredited schools around the country. Funds can be used for all levels of education, from vocational and trade schools to community colleges and traditional fouryear colleges and universities.

In addition to the check presentation for Phares, AZ 529 announced the winners of its annual coloring contest on May 29. Three more $529 college savings plans were awarded to children across the Valley based on their winning “Picture Yourself After College” artwork entries — and three additional honorable mentions received $200 each in AZ 529 college savings plans to boot.

From 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 15, the Peoria real estate office will hold a free homeseller’s workshop to teach about the benefits of home ownership and using a licensed agent to assist with home sale.

The workshop will be located at the Maricopa County District’s White Tank Library, located at 20304 W. White Tank Mountain Road, Waddell.

Participants can learn about the benefits an agent can provide when helping clients sell a home at the workshop, which will be led by Tracy Motley at Weichert, Realtors — Peak Performance. The workshop focuses on various aspects of the home selling process, including knowledge of the current real estate market, negotiation

skills and inventory issues. Participants will also learn about the legal issues and liabilities associated with selling a home.

Burn Boot Camp exploring possible Peoria location

Burn Boot Camp isn’t a standard box gym.

Rather, the company plays host to “45-minute, high-intensity interval, boot camp-style workouts,” according to Zach Munroe, franchise sales manager.

Boasting 207 locations in 37 states, and counting, with more than 65,000 clients, according to its website, the company is looking to Peoria as one of its next target markets. The only West Valley location is in Surprise, at 12100 N. Dysart Road, Unit 111, at the southwest corner of Cactus and Dysart roads.

With a focus on empowering women, many of Burn Boot Camp’s “camps” are female exclusive, though coed sessions are also offered.

The purpose of the high-intensity interval training, Munroe explained, is to mix cardio with strength training, and in turn burn more calories for longer periods of time. According to Burn’s website, an average of 700 calories is burned per camp.

To eliminate redundancy, however, workouts have been designed to vary throughout each week. A Weekly Protocol is regularly uploaded to Burn Boot Camp’s app and on social media pages.

The protocol incorporates various days, from leg workouts to strength training and core fitness, and seeks to avoid training the same muscle groups over consecutive days.

“We want to change it up, we want to make it fresh, new, so that no one gets accustomed to the routine,” Munroe ex-

plained.

Guests, Munroe said, will notice the gym’s “proprietary floating floor,” which he said is essentially just a modified gymnastics floor, of roughly 1,800 square feet, where workouts primarily take place. It provides a bit of a spring to reduce the impact on one’s knees.

“We can do more aggressive movements and ultimately achieve quicker results and get stronger, faster, leaner and all that kind of stuff,” he said.

Gyms also include standard rubber floors, and boast equipment such as pull-up rigs, jump ropes, punching bags, dumbbells, kettlebells and medicine balls.

ing to have the ability to be modded up if somebody needs a little bit of extra push because they’re really in shape or modded down, so if they’re not so in shape, they can still do the exercise, just modded differently,” Munroe added.

Six-, 12- and 18-month memberships are available, all of which include unlimited workouts, access to all loca-

tions, complimentary childwatch and Focus Meetings.

The latter are one-on-one sessions with head trainers to discuss subjects like nutrition, performance, lifestyle and weight loss.

“It helps the trainers to get to know a client more than just their first name and yelling at them while they’re working out. And then they actually know, ‘Hey, what motivates this person? Why are they here?’” Munroe explained.

The company offers various promotions. Fourteen-day trials are available, and free Saturday camps allow members to bring a friend along to test the experience. The latter is offered as one free coed session per Saturday, Munroe said.

And with the company hoping to spark an interest in a Peoria franchise, notable is the company’s Rapid Fat Loss Program, a grand opening promotion where anyone who signs up for a new gym before it opens its doors receives a free 30-day membership.

During those first 30 days, those on trial can invite a friend to sign up for a 30-

day, $30 discounted trial membership.

Limited spots are available under the RFL program.

Founded by former San Francisco Giants player Devan Kline and his wife, Morgan, in 2012, Burn Boot Camp began franchising in 2015, after which it has seen its rapid expansion. Entrepreneurship Magazine named in one of the fastest-growing franchises last year.

Munroe attributes this success to the low cost of entry, a community atmosphere and passionate management.

“We really believe in what we’re doing. That resonates with everyone here at headquarters,” he said.

“We invite all candidates that are interested in opening a location to come to headquarters to meet us, to understand what we’re about, where we want to take the company, the vision that we have for the company, all that kind of stuff.

“I think the combination of the organic growth, just the culture that’s built inside the gyms, the culture that’s built at headquarters, and the overall (low cost) of entry makes it very appealing for some people to get involved with.
