The Peoria Unified Governing Board tapped Landa Tartaglio to lead Peoria High School as its new principal during the governing body’s May 27 meeting. This spring, longtime principal Paul Bower announced his retirement. “I want to take this opportunity to express what an honor it has been to serve you, your children and our school the past several years,” Bower said. “One of our goals at the Peoria High School has been to help all of us determine our ‘why’ — because when we know our ‘why,’ the ‘whats’ and ‘hows’ of life become more apparent. My ‘why’ for the past 36 years has been to help young people realize their amazing potential.

Arizona Christian acquires Glendale/Peoria YMCA

Arizona Christian University acquired the Glendale/Peoria YMCA, which is another step in expanding the liberal arts school. ACU was able to purchase the 5-acre property thanks to donations from Green Fund, headed by David and Barbra Green of Hobby Lobby and the Museum of the Bible.
“It’s a fantastic story, and one that we’re really grateful for,” said James Griffiths, the vice president of university engagement. “The Green Fund became aware of the opportunity that we had to purchase the YMCA property and made a generous gift to the university to help make that happen, along with some other record-breaking fundraising that enabled us to make that happen.” Griffiths said the timing and the partner-
ship was ideal. “This was just us connecting well with people who were interested in what was happening in the school and wanted to be a part of it,” Griffiths said. This is just another step in Arizona Christian’s growth. In 2018, in a land swap with ASU’s Thunderbird School of Global Management, the Firestorm took over the university’s facilities. gave Arizona Christian more room to expand. “We have been so grateful to have the facility that we have,” Griffiths said. “But as a graduate business school, the Thunderbird School did not have robust athletic facilities. As a liberal arts undergraduate school, that is something that we need.” The YMCA is a huge upgrade to the previous facilities. With this new space, ACU has its own gymnasium, which will host volleyball, basketball and wrestling matches, as well as a gym facility, a lap pool, locker rooms and a group fitness room. Along with that, it will set up the gym to cater to athletes who train using the cardio and strength facilities. This addition does not only help the ACU student athletes, though. All the previously mentioned amenities will also be available to the ACU student and staff population, including club and intramural sports. Now with the new space, students, athletes and staff will have a place to work out and compete. This gives Arizona Christian a home court advantage. “We have been grateful for those in the broader Glendale area, including the YMCA, who have allowed us to rent and lease space for our athletes to train and compete all over Glendale,” Griffiths said. “But what this will allow us to do now is to have our own space.” Finding the facilities needed to keep up the multitude of sports programs is tedious and expensive, Griffiths said. The Firestorm family has a reputable sports program. They have accumulated many awards and championships over the years, including 11 championships since 2011, 10 nationally ranked teams across multiple sports, as well as produced over 200 all-conference athletes, which is the most by any school in the conference.

With the addition of the YMCA, ACU has its sights set on more achievements. Some of these Firestorm athletes have even made it to the big leagues, including nine former ACU athletes making it to the Major League Baseball draft. During this past sports season, as a part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the National Christian College Athletic Association, Arizona Christian’s teams have performed well. Its men’s basketball
team finished 24-3, ranked No. 5, and took home the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) title. The women’s basketball team finished at 12-5, which was second place in the GSAC East. Aside from the sports teams, this is a real morale booster for the students enrolled at ACU, providing them with a big upgrade to what they previously had and will be a huge leap to helping the university grow in the future.

Summer Reading Program begins
Peoria Reads: Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader is a free summer reading program that was created to encourage Peoria’s youth and future workforce to read at least 20 minutes a day over the summer. China means you always have to say ‘Sorry!’ BY J.D. HAYWORTH Peoria Times Columnist
“Love means you never have to say you’re sorry,” or so Ali MacGraw and Ryan O’Neal told us in the 1970 motion picture “Love Story.” But over a half-century later, the love of money has Hollywood falling all over itself to apologize to communist China. “Fast and Furious” is not only an exhaustive action film franchise — if you’re keeping count, the new release is No. 9 — but it also describes how quickly bodybuilder/wrestler/movie star John Cena scrambled to get back into the good graces of the millionaire Marxists in Beijing. After encouraging the good moviegoers of Taiwan, saying that the island nation of Chinese nationalists would be the first country to see the new feature, the communist mainland started breathing fire in dragon-like fashion, and Cena promptly surrendered to the worldview of the jarringly misnamed “People’s Republic.” Putting the “dip” in diplomacy, Cena sought to blame his busy promotional schedule for his unintentional deviation
from Chicom dogma, with its insistence that Taiwan is really part of China, and the ominous rumblings that a “reunification” through military action could become reality. “I’m doing a lot of interviews. I made a mistake in one of my interviews. … I love and respect China and Chinese people. I’m very, very sorry about my mistake. I apologize. I’m very sorry. You must understand that I really love, really respect China and the Chinese people. My apologies.” To reinforce his “love and respect,” Cena offered his apology in Mandarin, a language he initially learned for WWE tours in China. He is now considered fluent in Mandarin, since he moved to China for five months in 2018, shooting a movie there with Jackie Chan. The Cena-Chan casting combination isn’t much of a surprise in the movie biz, but the bipartisan tag teams that emerged to take apart Cena’s Mandarin mea culpa in the Twitter-sphere was eye-opening. Leftist commentator and sportscaster Keith Olbermann called it “shameful”; conservative Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Arkansas, described it as “pathetic.” Two other broadcasters from opposite

CNN’s Jim Sciutto put forth this rhetorical question-and-answer flurry: “Why not call a decades-long healthy and functioning democracy a country? Because much of Hollywood operates in fear of Beijing, many of its blockbuster movies are dependent on the mainline Chinese market.” Talk radio host Ben Shapiro taunted Cena with a cross between “Monday Nitro” and “Firing Line”: “Taiwan is a country. Hong Kong should be free. If you are unwilling to say these things because it might hurt your bottom line, you are a pathetic coward.” Cowardice, calculation or both, Cena is scarcely alone when it comes to kowtowing to the communist Chinese. NBA players and coaches, so “woke” when it comes to America’s alleged social ills, stay silent on the subject of slave labor in China. The World Health Organization, tasked by the United Nations to deal with major health problems such as global pan-
demics, lavished praise on the Chinese government for its initial response to COVID-19, despite reports that security forces locked infected Wuhan residents in their apartments, denying them food and medical treatment while nature took its course. What course will the world follow in the years ahead? Puff Daddy rapped of gritty economic reality in his 1997 hit “It’s All About the Benjamins,” but given the inclinations of the entertainment industry, the indulgent attitude of the Biden administration and the Chinese aspirations for military and economic ascendancy, he would do well to concoct a new composition. Perhaps “It’s All a Yin for the Yuan” will reflect the rhythms of a new reality, but don’t expect anyone in China to say “Sorry!” And no one will confuse it with “Love Story.” J.D. The best flags speak about what we love BY DAVID LEIBOWITZ Peoria Times Columnist
One of the things I miss most about America was how people used to believe certain topics shouldn’t be discussed in public. Religion was one. So was politics. You didn’t ask people what they weighed or how much money they earned. We kept those things to ourselves, and it was deemed impolite to quiz people about it. Those days are over. Now everyone is an amateur newspaper columnist, spouting off 24/7: constantly on social media, with bumper stickers and full-sleeve tattoos, Yelp reviews, you name it. Then there’s the lady who lives in north Phoenix up around 56th Street along Bell Road. Not content to stop at Facebook trolling or boring the hell out of people at a Memorial Day barbecue, this anonymous soul has hoisted a massive black flag up her backyard flagpole
for thousands of drivers-by and neighborhood school kids to glimpse daily. Her flag uses expletives to describe Biden and those who voted for him. “Yes, it might be a little vulgar to some and offensive to some, but everybody’s entitled to their opinion,” Ms. Profane Flag Lady told reporter Jason Barry with Arizona’s Family. “If those kids can figure out what that sign said, then those kids have already heard that kind of language and vulgarity either from their homes, on TV, in movies or in school.” Furthermore: “It’s a sign,” said the woman, who refused to be identified out of fear for her safety. “Get over it. If it hurts your feelings, sorry.” My standard policy when it comes to people who are striving to be offensive is to refuse to be offended. Instead, like with this lady, I just feel sorry for them. How miserable does your life have to be that you would go to the trouble of ordering such a flag, much less taking
the time to raise it to offend strangers? Can you imagine sipping your morning coffee as the sun rises over the neighborhood, sitting in your backyard and enjoying the occasional honked horn or screamed profanity from a Prius driver tooling up Bell? Boy, talk about living. Get a life. That same sentiment occurs to me when I play golf on a course that winds through homes amid backyards. I can attest that Profane Flag Lady is not alone. From Mesa to Glendale, Avondale to chi chi Scottsdale, many of us still feel compelled to lash out at Donald Trump with the same class this Bell Road idiot has displayed. Trust me, for every gentle soul mortally wounded by your cheap piece of polyester, there’s a hundred of us who simply shake our heads at the statement you’ve chosen for all the world to see. Put another way, there are more than 60,000 flags for sale today on Amazon. There’s innumerable Stars and Stripes.

There’s Arizona flags galore. ASU, NAU, UA, they all have flags. Your alma mater has a few dozen. There’s the Jolly Roger, if you’re into pirates. For 10 bucks, you can get a flag adorned with Marlon Brando in full Don Corleone mode from “The Godfather.” There are POW/MIA flags, yellow smiley face flags, “Beware of Pugs” flags and an “I love Hot Moms” flag. The best flags seem to speak about what we love, not who we hate. If you can’t manage that, there’s always no flag at all. Back in the day, we used to keep quiet about a lot of controversial things, which added some mystery to life. The guy next door or the lady beside you in line at the bank might be an absolute jerk. Union Coffee Co. is mayor’s restaurant of the month BY ALEX GALLAGHER Peoria Times Staff Writer
Union Coffee Co. was named Peoria’s restaurant of the month by Mayor Cathy Carlat for its locally grown coffee and dedication to the community. “To be recognized and appreciated is just amazing, especially after going through such a crazy year,” said Kristin Frey, who owns Union Coffee Co. with her husband, Brian. The shop is known for its locally grown and fresh brewed coffee. However, it’s what the Freys do with their revenue that sets them apart — and caught Carlat’s attention. “When she saw that we are involved in the community, work directly with local farmers for our coffee beans, work with local artists, and that we do things honestly and ethically, I think that was what appealed to her,” Frey said. “We do fundraisers with the school, and we offer discounts of 10% to teachers, students and first responders.” Unfortunately, one effort hit a little too close to home. Two years ago, a teacher at Oakwood Elementary School, where their daughters attended, was hospitalized with flesh-eating bacteria. Saddened to hear of the

Chin Up Donuts colors outside the lines with pastries BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI Peoria Times Executive Editor
Valley native Alex McEntire wanted something different. As she worked a corporate job in Seattle, she filled her free time making donuts. She played with recipes and experimented with flavors. McEntire, who grew up along the Glendale/ Peoria border, was inspired by salty, savory and spicy donuts. “I found I was having more fun with donuts than sitting behind my desk,” McEntire said. Just before the pandemic, McEntire opened Chin Up Donuts at 7325 E. Frank Lloyd Wright, Suite 103, Scottsdale. “The whole mission is to provide joy and positivity,” she said. “I opened during the pandemic, when the world and the community needed a little more of it.” Chin Up Donuts is known for its Everything Bagel donut, which shares a salty, sweet combination. McEntire acknowledges it’s a little, well, questionable. “I have to persuade a lot of people to try it,” she said with a laugh. “It’s such a fun combination that your brain gets a little confused. “We switch up donuts with other fun flavors.” Whoa Wasabi is a yeast-raised donut with a sweet and spicy wasabi glaze topped with a ginger-infused caramel drizzle. Sriracha-Cha, another yeast-raised donut, has a sweet and spicy Sriracha glaze and is coated in cinnamon sugar sprinkled with red
pepper flakes. “Whatever I eat, I think about how I can turn it into a donut form,” McEntire said. “I just love pushing the boundaries of what’s found in a donut. I don’t think, inherently, they have to be sweet. The more eccentric flavors, the better. I was eating Mexican food and tried to figure out how I can turn it into a donut.” McEntire once considered a donut with nacho cheese, glaze and Doritos, but the chip became soggy. For National Donut Day on June 4, she is collaborationing with businesses favored by her guests. McEntire is partnering with Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles for a chicken and waffle donut. With Fired Pie, she’s creating a marinara-glazed donut with shredded mozzarella and pepperoni. “I did a poll on Instagram to see who the public would like to see me collaborate wish, and it was overwhelmingly Lo-Lo’s,” McEntire said. “So, I messaged them on Instagram, and we set it up.”
Pandemic help Like most restaurants and bakeries, Chin Up Donuts suffered through the pandemic. However, McEntire will receive a bit of help, thanks to Vans. She was invited to partner with Vans and its Foot the Bill initiative. In this partnership, McEntire designed a shoe as fun merchandise for her shop and to help it grow. She received a cut of the sales of 350 shoes and about 200 T-shirts. McEntire expects to receive the money in about four weeks. “I filled out an application and then filmed a video in the shop telling our story,” said McEntire, whose older sister, coincidentally, attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. “A few weeks later, I found out I was selected to participate in it. “I designed the shoe, both of which were available for sale. They designed the corresponding T-shirt. It was fun to design shoes. I wanted something gender neutral. I went off the branding of my boxes with stripes and cac-
tus to tie in the Arizona roots.” The Kellis High School graduate called it a “fairly simple design.” “People love the saguaro,” McEntire said. McEntire says she didn’t actually think she would win, but she appreciates it because she could use the help after a challenging year. “I like to say I knew what I was getting into,” she added. “I built a business plan with projections. The business has been doing well, but we opened during the pandemic. It continues to grow, but the money can help me hire new employees to help the ones on board. It’s going to be great.”

We often dress our opportunities in stress, but they are, in fact, blessings.” Consider these self-discovery thoughts. “Being less visible doesn’t make you less valuable.” “When you know your value, you will stop giving discounts.” “Know your value, then add tax.” “If God doesn’t say it about you, quit saying it about yourself.” “Someone will always be prettier. Someone will always be smarter.
Someone will always be younger. But they will never be you.” Let’s close with spiritual health snippets. “There isn’t a mask big enough to protect us from everything going on in the world today. We need to suit up with the whole armor of God.” (Ephesians 6.) Here’s some encouragement for “sisters” wearing the whole armor of God. “Sister, when you get on that scale, remind yourself that you are wearing the full armor of God, and that stuff is heavy!” (I just made someone’s day!)
“When asked, ‘What is more important: praying or reading the Bible?’ Charles Spurgeon responded with, ‘What is more important: breathing in or breathing out?’” There you go — an article with a bit of irony and a little wrinkly. Remember to breathe in and break out. Prayer and Bible reading will do you good and help you, too. Remember, God’s not mad at you. God’s mad about you.
