Shafer is the interim Mesquite councilperson BY JORDAN ROGERS
Peoria Times Staff Writer
Brad Shafer will serve as the Mesquite District’s interim councilmember, following the departure of Bridget Binsbacher, who is running for mayor. Peoria City Council held a special study session and council meeting on April 28 to interview Shafer and vote. The governing body unanimously voted yes. “It was an honor,” Shafer said. “I believe the city of Peoria with the mayor and council — our staff as well — are some of the finest in the Valley. I am all about building relationships and working as a cohesive body to move Peoria forward. “Having a unanimous vote is a prime example of the mayor and council wanting to work with me.”

Despite his “interim” tag, Shafer plans to run in the Nov. 8 election for the permanent position. He is gathering signatures and campaigning. A third-generation veteran, Shafer served as a combat medic in the U.S. Air Force at Luke Air Force Base. He has spent the last 15 years volunteering his time to serve the community. ary Bernard was training for a Phoenix Roadrunners hockey team tryout when he met a Peoria Fire Station employee. After a conversation about the city department, he redirected his goal to the fire industry. Now, 30 years later, the one-time recruit is Peoria’s fifth fire chief, as the city council approved him May 3. “Opportunities came and doors opened
up,” Bernard said. “I had the time on and the education, the experience. I’ve worked every division in the office. So, I felt like I was a good candidate.” After passing on the tryout for the Roadrunners, of the now-former World Hockey Organization team, Bernard knew he made the right decision. “I just loved it; I fell in love with the job,” Bernard said. “The physical part of the job; that camaraderie. To me, it was a lot like a hockey team.”
He’s been working his way through the ranks since 1991, including a stint in medical school. The fire chief role wasn’t exactly in the plans. Bernard was just doing his best to work hard and try to prove his worth. “I wanted to do the best job I could to prove to the folks that said yes that they were not wrong,” he said. “I didn’t want to let those folks down. I just worked hard every day and the promotions came quick
