A Peoria music teacher was awarded $5,000 through the Desert Financial Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers program and used all the funds to add instruments to her classroom. Emily Hendricks, a kindergarten through third grade general music teacher at Great Hearts Archway Classical Academy Glendale, was one of 200 Arizona teachers granted $2,500 through the program. Donors Choose, a nonprofit organization that allows people to donate directly to public school classroom projects, matched the award money, allowing Hendricks to add even more music into her classroom. “I didn’t think it was real. winning the grant. I just felt really blessed and privileged.” Hendricks purchased Boomwhackers, which are tuned percussion tubes that teach pitch and rhythm, whether by banging them to find a beat or reading music to create pitches. The Peoria City Council unanimously voted April 6 to approve a rezoning proposal that has been in discussion for a year and a half. The proposal allowed 3 acres of land to be developed for a drive-thru restaurant, Kentucky Fried Chicken, at 75th Avenue and Thunderbird Road, just north of the Thunderbird Estates West. “We spent a lot of time trying to figure out what was going to be right for the neighborhood and right for the neighbors and for the city as well,” said Dan Biswas,

representative for the developer and applicant. The proposal was first heard Oct. 15, 2020, by the Planning and Zoning Commission. Multiple speakers spoke in opposition, citing noise, traffic concerns and odor. The commission voted 6-1 to deny the ordinance. “The major thing we tried to overcome was the 6-1 vote against,” Biswas said. “Basically, we didn’t meet the intent of what the zoning issue was when we went to the planning commission on the first goaround.” On Feb. 16, 2021, a new, reworked plan was presented to the Peoria City Council.

Several large changes were made, including a change from 24-hour operation to 16-hour operation and the addition of an 8-foot sound barrier wall and fins to mask the sound from the speaker box. The council remanded the proposal back to the Planning and Zoning Commission. “I’ve been on council. This is my second term,” said Michael Finn, councilmember, Palo Verde District. “I’ve seen the council go against planning and zoning one time, and this is the only time I recall us remanding something back to the Planning and Zoning Commission.” SEE CHICKEN PAGE 3
