Organization, fire departments partner to rescue pets BY JORDAN ROGERS
Peoria Times Staff Writer
Fire departments around the Valley work tirelessly and diligently to rescue those in crisis due to fires. There is so much to account for in making sure those affected in the situation are taken care of. Due to such a laundry list of responsibilities, pets are often left being far from the top priority and are often separated from their families. But thanks to Companion Pets in Crisis, pets involved in a crisis are in a much better position to be taken care of. Companion Pets in Crisis, or CPiC, is a nonprofit organization that works to keep pets and their families together in a time of
crisis. Lisa Martin, CPiC’s founder and executive director, was working as a volunteer responder with the Phoenix Fire Department in 2015 when she saw a need and eventually launched an initiative to fill that void. “We would go on many calls, and we were there to help the family, but they always had pets involved and there was nobody there for the pets,” she said. “Sometimes we couldn’t help the family if there was nobody there to help with the pets. Matthew Sartorius has taken over as the new chief operations officer at the Abrazo Community Health Network’s Arrowhead campus. Sartorius, 30, previously held the position of vice president of operations at Stone Springs Hospital Center in Dulles, Virginia. During his time with Stone Springs, he led all operational activities and executed strategic priorities. Under his leadership, the hospital saw growth in key services,
employee and physician engagement, and quality. With Abrazo Arrowhead, Sartorius will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the surgery, lab and biomedical engineering facilities, among many others. Sartorius began work with Abrazo Arrowhead on Feb. 21 and is thus far enjoying his time in the West Valley. “I’m really, really liking Arrowhead,” he said. “The culture here is phenomenal. There’s a lot of good things going on as far as growth goes. I’m really, really enjoying it.”
Sartorius attended the University of North Florida, where he received a bachelor’s degree in health administration, and master’s degrees in both health administration and business administration. Education is something he considers to be very important, and he cited it as a reason as to why he was interested in working at Abrazo Arrowhead. The hospital offers graduate medical education courses for medical school graduates. “It’s one of the things that attracted me not only to Abrazo but Arrowhead, because
