For many, July 4 means watching a big fireworks show, then celebrating at a bar. Neither will be possible this Independence Day. A few hours after Gov. Doug Ducey delayed school openings, closed bars and gyms, and banned gatherings of 50 or more, Peoria canceled a fireworks celebration. A few days earlier, Deer Valley Unified and Glendale Union high school districts canceled graduations. At a Monday, June 29, press conference, Ducey closed bars, gyms, movie theaters and water parks “effective 8 p.m today with a targeted reopening date in 30 days. “We are going to delay the first day of

school until Aug. 17,” Ducey said. He again pleaded with people to “stay home if you can.” Ducey cited rising coronavirus numbers and hospitalizations in pleading with people to stay home—and, when in public, to wear masks. “Indoor and outdoor public events of 50 or more will be prohibited,” Ducey said. The Peoria Unified School District Governing Board emotionally honored Superintendent Linda Palles Thompson at her last meeting before her July 1 retirement. With plenty of praise and nostalgic comments floating around the “remote” meeting, governing board President David Sandoval said, “You are loved by many, without question.” Thompson has been superintendent for the past three years and has been with the

district for three decades. Peoria Unified School District, headquartered in Glendale, serves more than 30,000 students in Glendale and Peoria. Dr. Jason Reynolds is the district’s new superintendent. (He was previously deputy superintendent.) To follow social distancing guidelines, many of the board members appeared at the June 25 meeting via video conference.
