Giving Abbie S. Fink uses skills, connections to create change

T

his spring, female leaders across Arizona will be honored by 48 Arizona Women, an Arizona Centennial Legacy initiative in partnership with the Arizona Historical Society that recognizes remarkable local women making a lasting impact in their communities, often with little fanfare. The program, only put on every 10 years, showcases how female leaders have transformed lives, built stronger communities, and influenced and shaped the world around us.

Among this decade’s honorees is longtime Scottsdale and business champion Abbie S. Fink.

Kevin Bacon and Fink have two things in common.

The first: dancing, or the ability to fight for the right to dance, more specifically.

Much like Bacon’s “Footloose” character, Ren fought for the right to dance when the powers that be outlawed it; Fink fought for a similar right at her area elementary school.

“Given it was the 1970s, I technically did it before Ren, trailblazing before my fictional counterpart,” Fink says with a laugh.

She organized a formal protest at the school when its administration tried to cancel her class graduation dance.

The protest caught the attention of the local news desks, who interviewed 11-year-old Fink about the cause.

“The dance was reinstated, but it was the interviews that stuck with me long after

we won the right to do the hustle in the school cafeteria.”

While her first brush with the media, it was far from her last. However, that is not the second commonality with Bacon.

Fast-forward to the mid-1980s — freshly graduated from ASU — Fink dealt with the media daily in her public relations role for the Fiesta Bowl.

“This time, it was mostly behind the camera, coordinating parade floats and marching bands to appear during nightly newscasts. Baton twirlers and tennis players featured in their local newspaper,” says Fink, who co-founded the Arizona Festival & Events Association and served as its president twice during her earliest days in business, the first on her long list of nonprotest-related accomplishments.

While working for the Fiesta Bowl, Fink met Scott Hanson, then a local sports reporter who also owned a public relations agency. Hanson, impressed with her talent, offered Fink a job in 1992. A freelancer at first, Fink joined full time in 1993, coming out of the gate to lead the charge on a project with global impact.

“Our law firm client asked us to take on some work for some of their tribal government clients in the region,” Fink

FRESH • PEOPLE says. “It was work on behalf of what would become the Arizona Indian Gaming Association, which eventually led to working with nearly a dozen tribal governments, work that continues today.”

In the years since, Fink has been a vocal advocate, volunteer and leader in civic, tribal, disability, youth, nonprofit and communications communities. Her nickname by many in the community as a result: the connector.

This brings us to the second thing that she shares with Bacon. Much like there are “six degrees of Kevin Bacon,” there are “six degrees of Abbie S. Fink,” as she is the common denominator in several hundred businesses, causes and programs.

An active advocate for women, Fink is a founding member and past president of the Valley of the Sun 20/30 Club. She eventually was the first woman to serve on the board of directors for the National Active 20/30.

“In 2015, I was so honored to be asked back by the club to accept the first lifetime achievement award, named in my honor, no less, for community service,” Fink says.

Beyond that, she is a graduate and past president of Scottsdale Leadership. She is also a past member of the organization’s advisory board. As president of Scottsdale Leadership in 2006-07, Fink played a crucial role in ensuring the organization’s future success, providing strong leadership as the organization experienced a year without an executive director on staff and managed to pull off a blockbuster 20th anniversary celebration at the same time.

In 2010, Scottsdale Leadership honored Fink with its Hodges Award, which is granted to distinguished alumni.

“As I moved into an executive role at HMA, I also made it a priority for the firm to champion critical causes,” Fink says.

Her work at HMA on behalf of the local chapter of the Partnership for a Drug-Free America resulted in a decrease in meth and ecstasy use in the community and significantly raised awareness regarding the impact of misuse of prescription/OTC drugs. Through her work with the Arizona Bridge to Independent Living (now Ability360), Fink affected change for more than 15 years as an advocate for persons with disabilities.

“Working with Ability 360 on the communications team to support capital campaigns that resulted in the building

of the Ability 360 Campus, including the Sports and Fitness Center for Persons with Disabilities, the first of its kind in the western United States, are particular points of pride,” says Fink, who in 2002 was the recipient of the “Ability Counts” Excellence in Media Award from the Phoenix Mayor’s Commission on Disability Issues.

Similarly committed to advancing the public relations profession, Fink has been an active member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) since 1986.

She is a past president of the Phoenix chapter of the PRSA and past chair of PRSA Western District Conference, and chaired its conference twice in the past 10 years.

She is a past chair PRSA’s Counselors Academy and a past chair of PRSA’s National Communications Committee.

As a result of her dedication, PRSA has honored Fink at the national level with the Patrick Jackson Award for Distinguished Service.

While unclear how she had the free time, she also served for a decade on the board of directors for the Boys & Girls

Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, including time chairing the organization’s largest annual event — Celebrate Youth Gala and Auction. In 2012, she was admitted to the executive board for the organization — at the time, the sole female on the board.

In 2020, Fink also served on Gov. Doug Ducey’s statewide campaign in partnership with top Arizona advertising and public relations firms to promote the use of masks and other important precautions to contain the spread of COVID-19.

“This first-of-its-kind collaboration featured creative concepts in English and Spanish developed by Arizona’s leaders in advertising supported by $3 million from the governor’s office,” Fink says.

Today, she is still leading HMA with business partner Hanson. She serves on the board of directors for Camp Colley Foundation. She volunteers at Congregation Beth Israel as a mentor to the B’nei Mitzvah kids and on the temple’s Centennial Committee.

“I like to stay busy, likely a bonus third thing Mr. Bacon and I have in common,” Fink says.

Scotchdale whisky makes waves in Arizona market

FRESH • COCKTAILS ince its inception in 2019, a local whisky brand is making a name for itself across the state as the “whisky of the West.”

Scotchdale, an 80-proof blended malt Scotch whisky, was created

by Scottsdale residents Travis Ranville and John McDonnell several years ago. It stems from Angus Dundee Distillers’ two pure malt distilleries in the Highland and Speyside regions of Scotland.

One day, the entrepreneurs were watching football and drinking scotch when Ranville asked, “Why isn’t there a brand named Scotchdale? I want to live in Scotchdale.”

McDonnell immediately trademarked the name online — and the rest was history.

“John and myself have been longtime friends and passionate whisky lovers.

We enjoy all things whisky,” Ranville explains. “We asked ourselves, ‘Why isn’t there a Scotchdale, and why not create a whisky we can tailor to our specific palate?’”

Scotchdale is now found in 43 cities and towns throughout Arizona at restaurants, bars, and liquor and grocery locations. The spirit has been distributed Valleywide, including on the shelves of Liquor Vault, Tops Liquors, Bitters, Lookout Tavern and Total Wine & More.

“With scotch whisky, we want to make it exciting again,” Ranville tells North Valley Magazine. “A lot of your normal craft cocktails that involve scotch whisky, a lot of bars out there, they’ll throw bourbon in cocktails. So, we are reinventing the craft cocktail and making scotch whisky exciting again.”

Scotchdale, priced around $50 per bottle, is aged for a minimum of eight years in charred American oak bourbon barrels. The silky-smooth product boasts notes of honey, caramel, chocolate, oak and coffee.

With less bite than a 100-proof bourbon, it is designed to be enjoyed neat or folded into a craft cocktail, according to McDonnell.

“We blended two regions, which is unorthodox in nature,” McDonnell discloses. “We came up with what we liked the best, and as two entrepreneurs, we set

out to do something that one, satisfied us, but also satisfied others. We sort of have a broad-ranged palette right down the middle.

It’s not too overly complex but not overly offensive.”

McDonnell and Ranville designed the label for the bottles, adorned with an outline of Arizona with a cowboy smack in the middle.

Scotchdale’s foundation is built around local support and Arizona pride, McDonnell says.

“We pride ourselves on local support. We go into the bars and restaurants that carry us, and we introduce ourselves as the owners.

We order a drink, and we assist with offering up craft cocktail suggestions,” he explains.

“That sets us apart from almost any other whisky company. We will sell the product for the bar. We go above and beyond.

“That is one of the hallmarks of why we have been successful,” McDonnell continues.

“We have taken the time to introduce ourselves and talk to customers and get them to sample our whisky.”

Neither McDonnell nor Ranville has an extensive food and beverage background, although McDonnell bartended at Hotel Indigo.

Ranville, boasting degrees from Western Michigan University and University of Phoenix, has experience in finance, while McDonnell stems from commercial real estate and renewable energy.

The whisky aficionados recall conducting their own “research” during Scotchdale’s beginning stages in order to get a better handle on how whisky is made.

The pair bought an illegal still and made their own batches, tinkering with videos and test recipes.

“I’m sure anyone going into business for themselves runs into a lot of naysayers,” Ranville laughs. “We jokingly told one another, ‘Well, if the company goes under, at least we have a lifetime supply of whisky.’”

While Ranville and McDonnell intended to acquire bourbon from Kentucky and barrel-age it here, they ran into issues with the Scotch Whisky Association. According to the Association, anything with the name “scotch” in it has to originate in Scotland.

Scotchdale also has to be spelled as “whisky,” which originates from Scotland, Canada and Japan, as opposed to “whiskey,” made in Ireland and the United States.

They contacted several Scottish distilleries, who sent them samples of three-year, eight-year and 12-year blends, before settling on Angus Dundee as its distillery.

Since then, Scotchdale has expanded into Nevada — and Ranville and McDonnell have no intentions of slowing down anytime soon.

“As a small and growing brand, we are hyper-focused on grabbing more on to the grocery market,” McDonnell says. “Long term, I think we have a wonderful product that will spread well nationally, and that is our goal.

“There are a lot of steps to get there, but we’re boots on the ground and we set a mission to go and help bars and restaurants by digital marketing, foot traffic and craft cocktails,” he continues.

Ranville says the pair is also looking to add bourbon in the near future into the mix.

“We are working on a bourbon. It looks like we might be blending or producing out of North Dakota, but it’s still up in the air.

It’s almost confirmed,” Ranville adds. “Our future is to create our own bourbon with our own mash bill. That means the ingredients are unique to Scotchdale.”

T

he COVID-19 pandemic closed most businesses in the country more than two years ago. Although the stock market has proven to be very resilient through this, it has not been without incredible volatility.

This has caused a high degree of anxiety as many people are watching their stock portfolios have large swings in value daily.

“Sometimes, in times like this, we need to help save people from themselves,” says Grant Ulrick, partner and wealth adviser at the Scottsdale offices of Stratos Wealth Partners.

“What this means is many times people will want to sell low (in a panic) and buy high (in euphoria), the opposite of what they should be doing.”

Finding ways to survive — and even thrive — during difficult times is the goal that drives Ulrick and his Stratos Wealth Partners team.

Jeff Concepcion started Stratos at the peak of the financial crisis in 2009, and Ulrick joined five years ago after weathering several dramatic ups and downs.

Ulrick got his start in the financial industry as a catastrophe adjuster for his self-owned insurance company, a job that required him to travel to disaster sites assessing property damage claims. Ulrick says his catastrophe training prepared him well for times like these.

“The most important thing you can do is stay in constant contact with your clients to either reassure them or make changes where necessary,” he says.

Lately, Ulrick has spent a lot of his time reassuring clients that the current economic crisis may not be impacting their portfolios as much as they fear.

“I’ve been through several recessions and several booms in the market,” Ulrick says. “And my experience has taught me that there are things we can control, beyond the things we can’t control.There are processes we go through as we attempt to reduce risk in portfolios and other ways to potentially maximize gains.”

After running his own insurance company for more than seven years around Springfield, Massachusetts, and Glastonbury, Connecticut, Ulrick worked for Prudential Financial. Later, he served as vice president of investments for Wells Fargo Advisors, where he worked for 15 years in the Meriden and Danbury, Connecticut, offices.

“Recently I’ve had a few people tell me they think this is the end of the world and they should cash in,” Ulrick says.

“I remind them that if this is the end, their

money means nothing. If it’s not the end, they will likely need more money due to the runaway inflation we are currently seeing.”

In the last few years, Stratos Wealth Partners grew its Scottsdale team, adding a new adviser.

Previously employed by AmTrust Bank, John Nilson joined in August 2021.

Victoria Bieler came on board as an insurance specialist in the Fairfield, Connecticut, office at the same time. She joined the staff from The Barnum Financial Group, bringing her insurance expertise in areas such as life, health,

disability, and property and casualty insurance.

June 2020 saw the addition of Amanda Badillo in Danbury, Connecticut, as a customer service representative. She assists clients and advisers in all aspects of the business.

“We are also grateful to be able to have retained our other key employees — Holly Wheway in Danbury, Connecticut, and Monty ‘Tyler’ Dobbins in the Scottsdale office,” he says.

One of the most popular segments is retirement planning. With the growing number of baby boomers, one can see why getting it

right is so important.

This demographic is growing in the Valley, so there is a growing need to serve these people.

Some of the many risks faced by retirees is the risk of running out of money.This can happen because of several factors, including stock market risk, individual security risk, inflation, pandemics, health care costs, and sequence of returns.

The sequence of return risk is one of the least discussed of these.This occurs when people take money out of their portfolio to live on and

they experience a loss in the markets in the beginning of this cycle.

It can be very difficult to get back to where they were while withdrawals are happening.

“This is one of the reasons we work very closely with clients to help maximize their lifetime income by showing how to maximize Social Security benefits, showing them ways to reduce IRMAA penalties with Medicare, planned giving to help reduce taxation, charitable remainder trusts, and helping clients plan their income to cover their base needs,” he says.

“All of these strategies can help reduce the risk of a poor sequence of returns.”

As for his own business, the 2021 five-star wealth manager and award-winning adviser remains upbeat.

“One of the good things about our business is that when the markets are good, everybody is happy and no one wants to leave their adviser,” he says. “But when the markets are bad like this, then they start talking to their friends about, ‘Well, how are you doing? Who is your adviser?’”

That is when Ulrick’s attention to his clients translates into valuable word of mouth. “These are the times I usually get a lot of referrals. “I hold on to my clients by constantly keeping in contact with them. I like to make sure I sit down in front of them at least once every quarter and talk more frequently on the phone.”

On his heels was, Lt. Joseph Christmas of the Army Corps of Topographical Engineers and his iron-hulled, 54-foot-long military stern-wheeler, aptly named the Explorer. They both set out to see how far up the river a ship could travel.

The little Explorer certainly wasn’t the most graceful-looking steamer to navigate the river. The expedition artist, Baldwin Mollhausen called her a “water-borne wheelbarrow.” She had an oversized boiler and an undersized engine. The paddle wheel was at the stern and the boiler and smokestack shared the front with a fourpound deck-mounted gun. In between was a small cabin and observation deck. Atop the cabin, a U.S. flag flapped in the breeze.

his Lexus ES 350 is one of the better luxury cars sold today. For 2022, it gets better with some updates. The refresh includes redesigned wheels, stronger headlights, a reshaped grille and interior changes. The list is short, because the vehicle is so good; few changes are needed.

This is the Ultra Luxury version. It has a long list of goodies too long to print here. However, we were not too happy to see many of these fancy items are optional. The LED headlights are $1,215 extra alone! Add Smart Access card, Navigation, Mark Levinson 1,800watt stereo, premium paint, rear spoiler and glass roof, and the tab jumps from $49,000 to $55,000. Still, this is a lot of car for the coin.

Under the hood is a proven 3.5-liter V-6 rated at 302 horsepower. It is hooked to a nice eight-speed auto transmission. There 32

Travel Troubleshooter Can Lufthansa charge me an extra $1,360 for changing my flight?

hen Lufthansa changes Gabriele Stahl’s flight from San Francisco to Munich, she tries to modify her itinerary.

Now the airline has presented her with a bill for an extra $1,360. Can it do that?

Question: Last year, I booked a ticket from San Francisco to Munich. A few weeks later, Lufthansa informed me that the flight had changed and that there would be a stopover in Frankfurt. Given that, it was more convenient for me just to terminate my flight in Frankfurt than to continue on to Munich.

I called Lufthansa and asked to change the ticket to Frankfurt, confirming that the change did not increase the price. I did that on the phone, noting the time and the representative I spoke to.

When I went to the ticket counter on my flight day, a Lufthansa employee told me that my ticket to Frankfurt hadn’t been paid. How was I supposed to know that? I was under the assumption that the original charge was still applied since the representative told me on the phone it would be exactly the same price. This was a complete surprise to me.

Lufthansa made me pay a walk-up fare of $2,360.

I have been fighting with Lufthansa since last July. The airline emailed back twice but obviously had not even read my email. In my last email, I just asked two very specific questions. I haven’t received

an answer in five weeks. All I want is a refund of $1,360, which is the fare difference. Can you help?

—Gabriele Stahl A: Lufthansa should have done what it promised you by phone: changed your flight from Munich to Frankfurt without charging you. The problem is, you don’t have any evidence that the phone conversation happened. The airline does; it records all calls for “quality assurance” purposes.

Until we’re on a level playing field — until both sides can legally record the conversation, and do — we’ll have problems like this.

The written correspondence between you and Lufthansa is frustrating for me to read. It looks like you spent many hours trying to secure a confirmation for your new flight, to no avail. Finally, you just went to the airport on the day of your departure, hoping for the best.

If you ever find yourself in this situation again, make sure you have a confirmation number for the new flight.

It looks as if Lufthansa didn’t do what it said. Instead, it canceled your old flight and issued a full refund. Then it made a new reservation and waited for you to pay for it. That’s not what you wanted.

I list the names, numbers and email addresses of the Lufthansa executives on my consumer advocacy site, elliott.org.

Unfortunately, Lufthansa almost never responds to my nonprofit organization’s inquiries, so I recommended that you send a brief letter of complaint to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Lufthansa refunded the fare difference. I asked Lufthansa to comment for this story, but it didn’t respond, as usual.

Lasagna soup

A

llow me to introduce you to my new favorite dish!

If you love lasagna, you’re going to be absolutely giddy over making this simple soup that tastes exactly like lasagna.

I can’t stop making it for friends and family, and I get a kick out of watching them come back for seconds — and thirds — and then holding their tummy because they’ve eaten too much. Be prepared for the same reaction! This lasagna soup is just scrumptious.

I often hear that folks love lasagna but only order it in restaurants

because it’s rather tedious to assemble.

With lasagna soup, it’s a one-pot wonder of deliciousness without the stress. In fact, you don’t even cook the lasagna noodles ahead of time. You simply throw the raw noodles into the soup! It’s just as delicious whether you use turkey, beef, Italian pork sausage or a combination of all three!

One of the things that really makes it taste like lasagna is the ricotta mixture that you dollop on top of the soup when you plate it!

If you like Italian cuisine, if you like easy, if you like to please people with a hearty dish that they will adore, then I hope you make lasagna soup soon.

Lasagna soup Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 3 cloves of garlic, minced • 1 sweet yellow onion, chopped fine • 1 1/2 pounds ground turkey, beef or Italian sausage (I prefer half beef or turkey with half sausage) • 1 (24-ounce) jar marinara sauce (prefer Rao’s Tomato Basil) • 1 (15-ounce) can diced tomatoes, or half a pint of fresh cherry tomatoes, chopped • 1/2 cup chopped basil, plus more for topping • 1 teaspoon oregano, dried or fresh • 4 cups chicken broth • 1 cup water • 1 cup heavy cream • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon pepper • 8 ounces lasagna noodles, broken into pieces (about 10 noodles) • 1 cup whole milk ricotta • 1 cup shredded mozzarella • 1 cup Parmesan cheese, plus more for topping

Directions

In a pot, heat the olive oil, and sauté the garlic and onion until soft and translucent.

Add the turkey, beef or sausage and cook until browned.

Add the marinara sauce, diced tomatoes, chopped basil, oregano, chicken broth, 1 cup of water, heavy cream, salt and pepper.

Simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring often.

Break the lasagna noodles into bite-sized pieces (about 1- to 2-inch pieces) and add them to the pot. Stir occasionally until the noodles are tender. (Do not overcook the noodles. They should be al dente, or a bit firm but cooked through.)

Meanwhile, in a bowl, combine the ricotta, shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheese, mixing to combine.

When the soup is done, spoon it into a bowl, top with a big dollop of the ricotta mixture and sprinkle with Parmesan and fresh basil.
