‘An Uphill Battle’ North Valley Christian Academy shocks in year three

R

andy Walker won a state championship as Boulder Creek High School’s head boys’ basketball coach in 2010. He had a successful seven-year tenure at Horizon High School in the early 2000s.

But he always wanted to build a program from scratch, to take a new program and turn it into a state tournament regular. He’s done just that as head boys’ basketball coach at North Valley Christian Academy, a 1A high school in Phoenix.

The Lions steamrolled their way to this year’s 1A state title game, after going 25-4 in the regular season.They were led by seniors Isaiah Savoury and Breagan Patton and junior Braeden Roberts, each of whom averaged more than 13 points per game.

Walker’s crew fell short in the championship game against Fort Thomas, 62-46. A year removed from a 13-12 campaign, their first season at the varsity level, the Lions went 27-5 and introduced themselves to the 1A conference as perennial contenders.

The school’s been open for just three years. In its inaugural season, it only had a JV program.

Now it only has a varsity team. Building the kind of culture that made Walker so successful at his past stops is tricky, but it’s one thing that made this such an enticing place to coach.

“I liked the challenge of building

(the program) into something that can compete,” Walker says. “We don’t want to be a one-hit wonder.”

Walker got a glimpse of what was to come in the summer, months before the Lions first tipped off for the regular season.They had competed in tournaments against other Arizona high schools, some of whom boasted successful programs, and North Valley Christian found it “was able to compete with them,” Walker says.

“I thought (then) that this team would be different.”

The Lions opened their regular season and rattled off 11 consecutive wins. They had discussed goals they had all summer, of winning their 1A West region and getting to the tournament. But Walker knew with a roster of just 10, eight of which he consistently used, it wouldn’t take much to derail those plans.

There could be injuries or guys who underperformed. Roberts suffered an ACL injury a year prior. Simply put: The Lions’ depth was bleak.

“When you have 10 players, you have to have a little bit of luck, or the break has to fall your way, if someone gets hurt, or if things like that happen, you just never know.”

Miraculously, the Lions rolled with an eightman rotation all the way to late-February— until they were slowed by Fort Thomas.

they just brought me pure joy,”Walker says. “It was disappointing (to lose in the finals), but to be around them and the coaching staff, and for our school, it’s hard to explain. It was just joyful.

“The steps we had taken in a very short amount of time is very special.”

Walker says he leaned on his assistants all year, Ed Newell and Max Wood, who were just as responsible for this year’s success as anyone in the program.

He constructed his coaching staff based off guys he had previous experience with. Newell’s son was on Walker’s 2010 Boulder Creek state championship team. He coached Wood when he was at Horizon.

After laying the building blocks, the next challenge Walker will wrestle with is how to repeat the magical run of this year.

There’s motivation to get back to the state championship game, he says. But the Lions will graduate four seniors.There are pieces to fill, holes to plug and several key roster vacancies.

But, Walker says, he’ll stick with what got them there in the first place—little by little, block by block. He can’t win a state championship in March—this much he knows by now—but he can surely start putting the pieces in motion.

“We’ve got an uphill battle. Our goal is to always win the region, and that automatically qualifies to get us into the state tournament.

Winning the region and then getting to the state tournament are step No. 1 and step No. 2.”

‘Crazy’ Promise to Myself can’t wait to unleash when the pandemic subsides

P

op-rockers Promise to Myself have a hard time keeping a secret.

Before the North Phoenix-based band released its sophomore EP, “I Might Be Crazy,” the quartet was told to stay mum about the new music. Sometimes it was a little harder than the group thought.

“Our manager and our label, 80/20, said we couldn’t tell anyone,” rhythm guitarist Zack Bruge says. “I would tell all of my friends, of course. On stage, I’d say we had an album coming out and our manager would tell me to shut up.”

The band—which also includes lead singer/ bassist Karl Nagy, guitarist Brad Stockton and drummer Tony Galvan—could spill about it on February 18 when “I Might Be Crazy” hit streaming services.

“It’s been a long work in progress,” Bruge says. “Now that it’s out, it’s super thrilling and exciting. We were anxious to finally release it after working on it. Some of the songs were written two years ago.”

Nagy adds, “I felt like we were in limbo, in a way. We had all of this content we were sitting on. But we’ve been performing it, creating other content with it—like music videos—and deciding what singles we want to release.”

Signed to 80/20 Records in 2019, Promise to Myself has been described as if Fall Out Boy, All Time Low and Waterparks had a fight to the death in a game of dodgeball, and the winner ended up being Big Time Rush.

From playing the Vans Warped Tour to an appearance on AZTV and radio stations such as Alt AZ 93.3 and KWSS, Promise to Myself played the Whisky A Go Go and opened for national touring acts in various venues.

“I think we’re really fun live,” Bruge says.

“We talk to the crowd, but we’re really focused on the music. At the end of the day, it’s entertainment. We’re very fun and we jump on stage. I’ve broken bones on stage.

“I’ve broken them a lot. I fractured a bone in my foot and kept playing shows and jumping around on it. I went to the doctor and what was a little crack was now a complete break.”

The EP was produced by Grammynominated engineer Jeremy Parker at Premier Studios. Bruge says Parker was a “super chill dude” who was inspirational.

“The first time we went in there and we were doing pre-production on the songs, we were all super nervous,” Bruge says. “We walked in the studio and there were gold records all around.

We just said, ‘Well, here are our songs.’ He asked us if we believed in aliens and we got into this huge conversation about it.That aside, he’s good at making bands sound exactly like the band sounds.”

Galvan says with “I Might Be Crazy” the band tried to infuse pop elements into its sound. Nagy calls “I Might Be Crazy” a collection that slowly transitions to Promise to Myself ’s “new era.”

“We’re trying to maintain our roots and reach new fans at the same time,” Galvan adds.

“We’re trying to be innovative a bit more and add new sounds to it.”

Bruge describes it as such.

“Our first EP (2018’s ‘One for the Runaways’), we wrote when we were 14 or 15 and it was released when we were in high school,” Bruge says. “This one is a huge step, in a sense. It’s more mature sounding. We’re growing up a little bit. It’s interesting to see how far we’ve come.”

When the COVID-19 pandemic subsides a bit, Promise to Myself will go full force into promoting the seven-song EP.The lack of shows and promotion has been “heartbreaking” for the band.

“We had a lot of stuff planned,” Nagy says.

“We had an EP release show planned and just a lot of shows in general. We just keep busy. Our main priority is to make sure fans are safe.

“Having to postpone and potentially cancel these shows is heartbreaking. At the end of the day, we’re all healthy and safe and we hope our fans are, too.”

Some have asked if the musicians wish they could have released the EP at a different time.

The answer is a resounding “no.”

ust over an hour from the Valley by plane—and only about seven by car— lies Santa Barbara. Nicknamed the American Riviera for its similarity to the French Riviera, the region boasts dozens of beaches and offers visitors everything from whale watching, rock climbing, scuba diving and backcountry Jeep tours to eagle watching tours, sky diving, wind surfing, sailing excursions, fishing charters, a skateboard park and seven 18-hole championship golf courses.

Though a mere 90 minutes from Los Angeles, Santa Barbara is truly a world apart.

Visually, expect more of a Mediterranean vibe as the city bursts with Spanish-, Moorish-, Portuguese- and American Indian-inspired architecture. More than 100 years ago, the region was a major player in the film industry, with over 1,200 movies filmed in the area during the silent-film era. As a result, families including the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Carnegies and du Ponts invested in land in the area, which inspired poets and artists to come see what all the fuss was about. Overwhelmed

by Santa Barbara’s splendor, many made the area their permanent home and still do, giving the area a reputation for being as culturally rich as it is beautiful. The world’s biggest names are still frequenting the area, notably Oprah

Winfrey, who loves it so much she moved there.

Given there is so much to see and do, however, getting it all in on one’s first trip—or first trip in a while—is virtually impossible.

Here is a look at where to stay, what to do and how to make the most of a visit.

Of course, Belmond is not the only culinary adventure to be had in Santa Barbara. People come from around the world to enjoy the farms, waters, vineyards, restaurants, farmers and fishermen markets, cooking classes, and food and wine events that create, cultivate and celebrate the region’s distinctive flavors.

A true bucket list experience is Bouchon.

Chef Greg Murphy is a flavor wizard. If there was a doctorate available in kitchen science, he would not simply have the degree, but be teaching the graduate courses. The best way to experience his genius is by joining him through his cooking process via his market tour and gourmet dinner package ($125 per person). Through it, twice a week Murphy leads an intimate group through Santa Barbara Certified Farmers Market, both giving a tour and showing how he sources ingredients for his award-winning dishes. And then, later that evening, the group is invited back for a three-course wine pairing dinner using the ingredients sourced during the earlier adventure.

The Lark, which recently earned the Michelin Plate award, is another must. It is located in a region of Santa Barbara known as the Funk Zone, which is today the epicenter of the thriving arts scene in the city. Urban in design and built using repurposed materials in a nod to the area’s history as an industrial zone in years past, the restaurant especially excels at pairing locally sourced dishes with craft cocktails as well as wines grown in the

TOUGH TIMES Stratos Wealth Partners’ advisers protect portfolios

ith all the unprecedented volatility in the markets right now, it’s perhaps not surprising that many investors have become as fearful of checking the Dow as the rest of us have become reading the breaking coronavirus alerts on our smartphones each morning.

“I’ve had clients—including some who’ve actually made money through this process—who have told me they’re afraid to look at their statements,” says Grant Ulrick, partner and wealth adviser at the Scottsdale offices of Stratos Wealth Partners Ltd. “And I told them, ‘You should. You might be surprised.

Pleasantly surprised.’”

Finding ways to survive—and even thrive—during difficult times is a specialty Ulrick and Stratos have mastered. Jeff Concepcion started Stratos at the peak of the financial crisis in 2009, and Ulrick joined after weathering several dramatic ups and downs before that. He says technology-driven companies are benefiting from the current workfrom-home focus while commercial real estate sellers are suffering.

“If people are going to learn how to do more work from home,” he observes, “large office space may not be as necessary.”

Ulrick got his start in the financial industry as a catastrophe adjuster for his self-owned insurance company, a job that required him to travel to NORTHVALLEYMAGAZINE.COM APRIL 2020 | MAY 2020

These days, he doesn’t travel as much (in fact, like all of us, he’s urged to minimize business trips), but he doesn’t really need to: The financial damage from the global pandemic is everywhere. But Ulrick says his catastrophe training prepared him well for this moment.

“The one most important thing you can do is stay in constant contact with your clients,” he says, “to either reassure them or make changes where necessary.”

Lately, Ulrick has spent a lot of his time reassuring clients that the current economic crisis may not be impacting their portfolios as much as they fear.

“I have been through several recessions, several booms in the market. And my experience has taught me that there are things we can control, beyond the things we can’t control.

There are processes we go through to reduce risk in portfolios and other ways to maximize gains.”

“A week ago, I was sending my clients snapshots of their accounts so they could see where they stood through this whole mess,” he says. “A lot of them were very happy to see it.

Even if they were down, they weren’t down too far in comparison to the market, which is part of asset allocation and part of hedging strategies.”

“We explain to clients, ‘That is why we allocate your portfolio the way we do,’” adds Bobbie Meola, managing partner at Stratos’ Scottsdale office on Greenway Parkway, just across the street from the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa. “We tell them, ‘That is why you only have 30% of your money in the stock market. This is why we did an annuity with the part of your money, to make sure that you have an income.’ So, you know, it’s really just reminding them why we have their portfolio structured the way it is.”

several booms in the market,” Ulrick says.

After running his own insurance company for more than seven years around Springfield, Massachusetts and Glastonbury, Connecticut, Ulrick worked as a representative for Prudential and later Wells Fargo Advisors, where he served for 15 years, working his way up to vice president of investments at the Meriden, Connecticut, office. It was Meola who brought him over to Stratos.

“She showed me the strength of the firm, showed me the support advisors received,” he says. “And she let me know that at this firm, you have the ability to take care of your own clients the way they should be taken care of.

The main thing that drew me to the company was that their whole philosophy boiled down to, ‘Just do right by your clients. If you do right by your clients, you don’t have any problems.’”

“There’s so much more flexibility here,” Meola adds. “When you’re at a big firm, they tell you what to invest in for your clients.

Here, you can make decisions based solely on what you think is best for your clients. And you can give your clients better pricing and costs for their business.”

Those one-on-one relationships are particularly important in hard times like these.

“Right now, I’m getting a lot of calls asking me, ‘How long do you think this is going to go on?’” Ulrick says. “And I tell them, ‘My crystal ball’s not that clear.’ I do know we’re probably closer to a bottom than we are a top. And I have others asking me, ‘Should I buy now?’”

That’s a hard one, Ulrick says, particularly with the way computerized trading is driving a lot of the volatility.

“When you see the market move a thousand points in a minute or 2, a lot of that is due to the computer algorithms that are trading the markets at rapid speed.”

Ulrick does see tech as a good field to invest in. “I feel that a lot of the technology-driven companies are going to benefit from this change we’re all coping with. Companies that have a delivery or online presence will definitely benefit even after this is over, because people are creatures of habit. And right now, they’re getting into the habit of staying at home and needing to use technology. So, as they become more and more accustomed to using it, you’re likely going to see more of a

shift in that direction.”

On a more urgent note, Ulrick has been advising clients to get their personal affairs in order. “One of the things I’m talking to people about is making sure that they have their medical directives in place, making sure they know if they have power of attorney in place,” he says. “With many clients, we’ve had this conversation in the past. But I always want to make sure that if they need any updating, they do it now.”

As for his own business, the award-winning wealth adviser remains upbeat. “One of the good things about our business is that when the markets are good, everybody’s happy and nobody wants to leave their adviser,” he says.

“When the markets are bad like this, then they started talking to friends about, ‘Well, how are you doing? Who’s your adviser?’”

That’s when Ulrick’s attention to his clients translates into valuable word-of-mouth. “These are the times I usually get a lot of referrals,” he says. “I hold on to my clients mainly by constantly contacting them. I make sure I sit down in front of them at least once every quarter.”

These days, of course, all of Stratos’16 advisers at the Scottsdale office are communicating with clients more on Facetime, Zoom or Skype. But Ulrick says he’s making that work.

“If anything, I’m putting even more time and effort into communicating with my clients and educating myself constantly on new ways to help them.”

Slow RUSH Helping Airpark jetsetters find the slow lane in retirement is the specialty of URA Group AZ

s co-founders of the retirement planning firm URA Group AZ (formerly United Retirement Advisors Group), Steve Mallory and John Kieber like to kick off initial client consultations with a quick run-down of what they call the three stages of retirement: “Go-go, slow-go and no-go.”

“In the ‘go-go’ stage, you spend the money that you’ve accumulated while you still can,” Mallory says. “Travel, if that’s what you want to do, spend it on the grandkids, make a new purchase—whatever.”

In the “slow-go” stage, maybe you’re not as active, you can’t travel as much, but people are living longer. The key to a successful retirement is living the “go-go” stage to the fullest while not sacrificing financial quality of life later in the “no-go” stage.

Operating in the Scottsdale Airpark, Mallory says they see a lot of people in that first stage.

“The majority of our clients are in the

Scottsdale/North Phoenix area. But once they retire, we have clients who live on a boat in San Diego; we have clients that live in high-rises in Houston. They’re taking advantage of the ‘go-go’ stage—especially the ones living on a boat in San Diego,” he says with a laugh.

Helping such clients transition from the fast lane to a slower, more deliberate pathway is a challenge that the two SEC Series 65 fiduciaries address each day at their firm. Along with Office Manager Roseann Sharp, they were recently awarded “Best Financial Planning Services”

by Scottsdale Progress. It’s a fertile market, particularly for the Airpark’s key demographic: According to the latest research, baby boomers are retiring in record numbers—about 10,000 per day. Yet 45% of that group are entering that stage with no retirement savings, according to the Insured

Retirement Institute.

Kieber—like Mallory, a former Midwesterner who settled in the Valley about 20 years ago—says he got into financial advising after he signed up for his first 401(k) at a previous job and discovered he lacked the knowledge he needed to make smart tax and investing decisions.

“That’s why I do this,” he says. “Because nobody got in front of me back then and gave any advisory expertise on basic concepts such as was it best to use a traditional 401(k) or was it better to use a Roth 401(k) option. That concept could lead to a lifetime of tax-free growth in the proper situation. It wasn’t even about what to invest in (although that is important as well). It was more about not getting educated on the effect of the decisions I was making at the time. Nobody really had the capability to provide a complete financial

overview of all aspects of my life—not even my financial planner.”

Together with now-retired adviser Garry Madaline, Mallory and Kieber created and developed the C.O.R.E. process, shorthand for “Comprehensive Objective Retirement Engineering.”

It is essentially a comprehensive “retirement blueprint” designed to educate older adults how best to transition from what the team calls “the accumulation to the distribution stage of life.” The process looks at everything retirees may encounter in today’s complex financial world and combines them all in one plan, so all aspects are working together to achieve retirement goals.

Concepts such as tax status of accounts, maximizing available income streams, what order to spend down retirement accounts, and defensive positioning of stock market assets are all considered interdependently of each other.

“Most people, and many advisers, understand all the concepts individually but tend to make decisions in ‘a vacuum’ for each,” Kieber says. “Unfortunately, when meshed together as an overall plan, this approach lacks the synergy essential for a truly efficient plan. We take all of the concepts on in a collaborative manner with each client so they understand why specific actions are recommended.”

Before the team delves into all that, however, they start with a consultation aimed at understanding the client’s goals and retirement objectives.

“We have a program we use called a retirement analyzer, and we plug everybody’s information into that,” Mallory explains.

“Things like how long you’re planning to work, what your salary is and what kind of monthly expenses you have. Then we arrive at a baseline of what it’s going to cost you when you step away from your job and no longer have that salary coming in.”

From there, the team starts developing an individualized plan for each client.

That’s when the true value of Mallory’s and Kieber’s combined experience really comes into play. Their website notes there are many different strategies on how to take your Social Security payments.

“All kinds of variables that go into making those decisions,” Mallory says.

“But a lot of people don’t understand what financial opportunities are available to them.

Our job is to educate them on what those variables are so that they can make the best decision possible.”

The team also keeps up on the evershifting financial landscape.

“There has been a change in the laws that affect retirees exclusively that just went into effect at the end of December,” Mallory says. “It’s called the SECURE Act (Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement), and what it did was it moved the age at which an individual must begin taking required minimum distributions (RMDs) from 70 1/2 to 72, which is when the government forces you to take out distributions on your tax deferred accounts—your 401(k), your IRAs, your 403(b), your 457. But in return, they took away what they call the inherited or stretch IRAs, which used to make it possible that if you leave money behind to beneficiaries— kids, anybody other than your spouse—they used to have a lifetime that they would be able to take it out. Now, it has to be done in 10 years.”

Time, as it turns out, really is “the final currency,” as rocker David Crosby wrote in a 1998 song. “Right now, we’ve been running on the longest bull run the market has seen—12-plus years,” Mallory says.

“Logic tells us that the market can’t continue like this forever. But if the market does correct while you’re in retirement, you don’t have time to wait long periods to recover substantial losses.”

Look how long it took the economy to recover from the financial crisis of 2007–08, he notes. “If you’re 30 or 40 years old and you have a paycheck coming in every two weeks, you can wait until it comes back. It’s a little bit different when you’re 65, 70 years old and need to live off your portfolio, so keeping its value intact is paramount.”

Very simply put, a different approach should most likely be taken when investing in retirement versus investing while you are working. Accepting this is paramount in beginning to design a retirement plan.

Additionally, retirees face expenses they never had earlier in life. “Seventy percent of people in their retirement years will face a long-term care need,” says Mallory, quoting current figures from the U.S. Department of

Health and Human Services.

“And right now, the average cost of a semi-private room in a long-term care facility is around $6,800 per month. How are you going to address that cost if you need it? Even if you don’t, the average retiree spends around $4,300 per year on out-ofpocket health care costs. You have to work things like that into your plan.”

With so many aging boomers in denial about their retirement needs, Mallory and Kieber feel it’s imperative their firm provides a strong educational component—that’s why the company hosts regular educational workshops based around their C.O.R.E. process at the Phoenix Better Business Bureau office. Kieber adds that URA Group’s Airpark location (on Northsight Boulevard and Evans Road, just down the street from the post office) also makes it convenient for their team to lead workshops at Airpark businesses for employees looking to better understand their retirement options.

“We often are asked to come in to simply educate employees on basic concepts for their 401(k) plans that may help to make more informed decisions. Most times it has very little to do with actual investment advice and much more about using the options available to you in the best way tax-wise,” Kieber says. “They tend to turn into live Reddit AMAs (Ask Me Anything).

We just say, ‘Fire away. What are you curious about, what did you read about you’re not sure of, what do you need to know to be more confident about your retirement planning?’”

Mallory adds, “Most of the people we work with are very educated, smart individuals that have done very well for themselves but lack information to make such important decisions, mostly due to the complexities of all the factors that need to be considered. That’s where we can help, providing the most up-to-date information so you can make the best educated decision possible.”

High Street salon extends Jamie Almaraz’s love of art

A

self-taught artist with an eye for statement pieces, Jamie Almaraz says she knew her hobby couldn’t support her family.

So, she got creative.

Now, with more than 20 years as a hairstylist under her belt, Almaraz has married her love of design to her blossoming career in one of her finest masterpieces to date—Cast Salon & Spa. “My background is in art; I have always loved it,” the North Valley resident shares.

“But I had to come to the conclusion that being an artist oftentimes doesn’t pay the bills.

“I had to separate it into a hobby category and find a career that was going to take care of my kids. Hair is kind of a branch of art, which I continued.”

The Phoenix parlor, located at 5355 E. High Street, Suite 101, specializes in all things beauty and screams SoHo art gallery meets exclusive Los Angeles salon—all while maintaining a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Inside the space, floor-to-ceiling windows and modern jewel tones illuminate displays of framed black and white photos, sleek sculptures and unique light fixtures.

A 250-pound, white Las Vegas chandelier commands the center stage above a group of mixed-wood styling booths.

“We went for more of an industrial wood look. We used all barn woods,” Almaraz says. “Each particular piece was created independently and comes from a different barn.

“You can see by their aging that some of them were from, like, a tobacco barn.”

Luxury for-sale products, including body washes, shampoos and lotions, from brands

like Aveda and Miriam Quevedo line backless shelves at the front of the salon.

An assortment of candles and magazines are also displayed throughout the waiting area.

“One thing people repeatedly say about what they love about being here is that it’s just a really casual experience,” Almaraz explains. “They don’t feel like they’re walking into a nightclub or like they have to be fully dressed to the nines. It’s just very comfortable.”

Cast offers standard blow dry and cut services for men, women and children, as well as color touch-ups, wedding packages and extensions.

For those battling the desert’s dryness— or anyone looking to spruce up their locks—the salon staff provides deep conditioning treatments using products like Olaplex.

“We’re not a training salon. All of our stylists are very experienced in doing hair,” the owner expresses. “‘Strong’ would be a great word to describe them.”

The Phoenix parlor screams SoHo art gallery meets exclusive Los Angeles salon.

Outside of hair, Cast extends its reach into the realm of skin care.

Custom facials, dermaplane treatments, facial peels and brow waxes are administered by a qualified esthetician in a private room.

“There are some relaxing aspects to what we do, but we really focus on the clinical,” Almaraz states. “If somebody is struggling with their skin—the colors and different things like that—we address those things.”

And that’s not all.

Clients can also indulge in botox, at $11 per unit; Dysport, at $4 per unit; and micro-needling at $300, among other cosmetic procedures.

“This (location) is against a developing area; it’s not something that is loaded with services like Scottsdale Road is,” Almaraz says. “I’m offering as much as I can to the area, which is really the focus.”

Before Almaraz became the proud owner of Cast Salon & Spa, she worked as a hairstylist in the very spot her salon sits today.

“This used to be a different salon prior to Cast opening,” she shares. “I moved up here from South Scottsdale and brought my clientele. The owner decided shortly after she was going to step back and sell it.”

The cosmetologist, who describes herself as “on the more shy end of personalities,” decided to take matters into her own hands.
