D

uring the week of February 12–15, the NBA will return to the Valley of the Sun after a thirteen-year hiatus, bringing with it all that comprises the 2009 NBA All-Star Week. The festivities begin on February 12 with the opening of the NBA All-Star Jam session, a fun-filled fanbased activity zone, and culminate with the All-Star Game on Sunday, February 15. We had a chance to talk with Suns players Shaquille O’Neal and Amar’e Stoudemire and with Gail D. Hunter, senior vice president of the NBA, about these upcoming events. We met up with them at a Downtown Phoenix event at US Airways Center to kick off the fan ballot voting for the NBA All-Star contest.

In attendance as well were Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, Suns’ assistant coach Dan Majerle, and NBA greats Cedric Ceballos, Detlef Schrempf, and Glenn Rice. There was a short presentation about the new fan-ballot voting process and an explanation of the week’s events. This was followed by a media session breakout that allowed us access to the players and some of the individuals involved in bringing the 2009 NBA All-Star Game to Phoenix.

O’Neal was as entertaining as always, and young Stoudemire showed a focused and determined spirit in his answers to the media.

North Valley Magazine: What would hosting this year’s NBA All-Star Game mean for the city of Phoenix?

Shaquille O’Neal: It is going to be a

fun-filled event. I think that there will be a lot of stars, since we are so close to L.A. The weather is going to be great. There are a lot of wonderful hotels here, making Phoenix a great place to stay. I think everyone is going to come out. The people are very hospitable here. It’s going to be a great place to host the event and it will be great for the city of Phoenix.

Amar’e Stoudemire: It’s amazing. It’ll

bring all the celebrities and all of the fans of the NBA. It’ll bring everyone to the city of Phoenix. It’s a great opportunity for the world to see what a great city Phoenix is.

After they come here for the NBA All-Star Weekend, they will see that Phoenix is a pretty amazing place.

NVM: What do you think of the new processes in place for fans to elect the players to represent the NBA in the All-Star game? I’m thinking of online voting and text messaging through T-Mobile that add to the traditional ballot cards found in the arenas throughout the NBA. Shaq: I think it is great that fans can vote

online and vote through their phones. The fans have a great opportunity to vote for their favorite players. There are a lot of great players named to the ballot this year. It is going to be a great All-Star game.

NVM: What are some keys to success this year for the Suns?

Shaq: Last year, we were getting to know

each other. This year, we’re comfortable with everyone and what we have to do to keep things going. We have to take care of our turnovers, keep playing good team ball, stay injury-free, and focus on our team goals.

Amar’e: We have to stay focused. It’s

a new offense. We have a focus in place already defensively. We have to take heed and keep improving. I think it will be a great year.

NVM: Is this year’s Suns team a Championship team?

Shaq: I think we can be there again. We

have a great team here, with great players and coaches. Our team goal is to win.

Amar’e: I think so. We still have room to

grow and things to improve. We have the personnel, the right coaching staff; we just have to improve, stay focused, and just keep working hard, and we can get there. february / march 2009

North Valley Magazine: How was Phoenix awarded the 2009 NBA All-Star Game?

Gail Hunter: The Phoenix Suns along

with the Phoenix Conventions Bureau put forward a bid that included the use of the Arena, the Convention Center, and many great hotels and facilities that could be used to host all the events that are part of the All-Star weekend. Since we are the first major event for the city to host since opening new downtown facilities [Sheraton Hotel, the Phoenix Convention Center, the new light rail system], we are very excited to see all these things come together, and for the NBA to be part of something new and progressive, which mirrors where we are as a league.

NVM: Take us through the pre-game events up to the game itself.

GH: February 9–10 NBA Cares events

will begin throughout Phoenix communities with former NBA players and current WNBA players involved in community-based outreach programs to support academics and athletics in young children.

On Thursday, February 12, our NBA Jam Session opens up in over 500,000 square feet encompassing two whole floors of the Phoenix Convention Center to create our NBA Theme Park. The Jam Session is a great place for the fans to experience the All-Star events. You can see the NBA legends, All-Stars, and rookies practicing while having a chance to meet them and get free autographs. Friday is the Rookie Challenge Game [and] Saturday is the Skills Challenge, Slam Dunk Contest, and Three-Point Shootout. The events culminate Sunday night with the 2009 NBA All-Star Game.

NVM: What effects have players like the Rockets’ Yao Ming from China and the Lakers’ Pau Gasol from Spain had on the exposure to the NBA and to the voting process for the All-Star game?

GH: We have a tremendous amount of

people involved worldwide. With the online voting going on everywhere, players like Yao Ming have received a huge amount of votes. There has been the same effect for the European and Latin American players that are supported worldwide by the fans.

NVM: Who are some veterans that have a strong association with the All-Star game each year?

GH: We have an assortment of previous all-

stars and legends such as Bill Russell, Dr. J, and Dominique Wilkins, to name just a few. There is a Legends brunch that brings in a huge group of the NBA’s greats who spend the weekend at the events.

he NBA has made some adjustments to allow events to be shared by all fans. In an economy-sensitive pricing move, the organization has lowered ticket prices for the NBA Jam Session back to what they cost in 1995 when the All-Star game was last here for its first day of ticket sales, and there is a free event called the All-Star Block Party that goes on from Thursday to Sunday. The volunteer information meeting had over 5,000 fans who were interested in participating and helping throughout the week, so it was quite clear that the people of Phoenix are excited and ready to host the 2009 NBA All-Star game.

The NBA is hoping to break every attendance record for what they do throughout the week. Shaq hopes that all the people of Phoenix get a chance to come out, see the players, and participate in the events.

This is a chance for Phoenix to live up to its name and showcase just how wonderful a place we live in, and that the people of this city are behind the Suns, the NBA, and the players who represent the best of the NBA past and present. As Mayor Phil Gordon said in the live broadcast going out to the world, “We’ll see you in downtown Phoenix for the 2009 NBA All-Star Week.”

t’s time to banish tired, old energy from your home and clear the way for a positive and productive year. Feng shui is the art of balancing and harmonizing the flow of natural energies through a space in order to maximize positive energy and create an environment that promotes health, happiness, and success. Creating a harmonious environment is an essential part of living your best life, ever.

Clutter is an obstacle to the smooth flow of energy in your home. Typical clutter includes items that are no longer wanted or loved and are not ongoing sources of joy, inspiration, or practical benefit. Clutter drains your energy and creates a sense of stagnation in your home, where energy should always flow freely.

You must clear the clutter before you can put feng shui principles to work in your home. This is not an article about organizing your closets and drawers.

Clutter is an obstacle to the smooth flow of energy in your home.

Energy flows where your attention goes. Place plants, artwork, and small pieces of furniture in corners to keep energy flowing throughout the room.

Organizing should only be concerned with the items you decide to keep after the clutter has been cleared from your home.

Bedrooms, bookcases, and storage areas are likely to require the most attention.

Stuffed bedroom closets and bulging bookshelves are obvious problem areas, but what about the space under your bed? Keep your under-bed areas clear and clutter-free to enjoy peaceful, undisrupted sleep at night.

Closets are notorious for harboring old, dead energy. Get rid of clothing that doesn’t fit or is out of style. Get rid of all but your best-loved books to make way for new reading adventures in the future.

In Arizona especially, we often see garages that are packed to the rafters with boxes. Your garage was designed for vehicles, not storage. Discard or donate the contents of any boxes that you have not opened in more than twelve months unless, of course, they contain heirlooms or other keepsakes. Why are you saving (and living around) unused items? It’s also time to get

rid of any keepsakes you may have from an old relationship. These elements drain your energy and emotions every time you see them. You’ve moved on, and it’s time for the items to follow suit.

The start of a new year is also a good time to update your address book. If you can’t put a face with a name or remember the last time that you spoke with that contact, let him or her go. This clears the way for all of the fabulous new friends that you are going to meet in the months ahead!

Energy flows where your attention goes.

Place plants, artwork, and small pieces of furniture in corners to keep energy flowing all through the room. Add seasonal elements all through your home to bring in fresh new energy on a regular basis. There are unseen causes of clutter that you should also address, such as rooms that have been the site of fights or other unhappiness.

A

utism is defined as a developmental disorder characterized by debilitated social interaction, verbal impairment, repetitive behavior, and limited interests. It is also a condition shrouded in mystery. No one knows what causes it.

Treatments are varied and debatable, and the path to a cure is unclear.

The labor involved with caring for an autistic child and the stress of not understanding the disorder often leaves parents desperate for help. Denise Resnik has been there. When her son, Matthew, was diagnosed with autism in 1993, she looked to the community and clinics for help and found none.

“There was a void in terms of resources, support, and hope,” Resnik says.

Instead of surrendering to hopelessness and relegating Matthew’s future to institutionalization, Resnik joined up with Dr. Cindy Schneider and Dr. Raun Melmed to found the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center (SARRC). The aim of the organization is to advance treatment and enhance the quality of life for people with autism spectrum disorders. Since its inception in 1997, SARRC has raised over $35 million.

“My work with SARRC also provides me with greater hope for our son’s future,” says Resnik, who currently serves as development chair and vocational and life skills academy chair. “I’m confident that the programs in place and those currently underway will help care for him when my husband and I are no longer able to do so.”

Autism is a complicated condition that requires a multifaceted approach to treat-

ment. SARRC’s varied care includes clinical programs that use evidence-based therapies and educational programs that train schools to support the needs of autistic students.

The organization also established the Opus West Vocational and Life Skills Academy to equip autistic individuals with living skills and supported employment. SARRC also sponsors research that joins methods and studies to better understand the possible causes of autism, develop better treatments, and eventually find a cure. The organization has proven to be very useful to the region; last year’s program and research enrollment exceeded 10,000 people.

Although SARRC has grown immensely since its inception, Resnik hasn’t let it cast a shadow over her duties as president of her strategic marketing and public relations firm. They have actually grown to complement each other quite well.

“There are many ways in which running and operating my own firm has been beneficial to me in supporting SARRC,” Resnik says. “It’s about layering resources, networks and sound marketing, and communications practices, enabling us to build the SARRC brand.”

On top of her sizable work commitments, Resnik has found time to serve as a board member for the Whispering Hope Ranch Foundation for over ten years. The ranch serves as a retreat for special needs children to interact with nature and animals.

Resnik says that bonds made at the camp are spiritual and provide healing energy.

In recognition of her success as a businesswoman and value as a community member, Resnik is being named Woman of the Year by the Valley Leadership Organization. Rhonda Bannard, who

Perhaps you need just a little help with your rent, or maybe your child needs schoolbooks that you can’t afford, or you may have a medical bill coming due while your pockets remain empty. AZ Eagles is that program, and it is making an impact on Arizona communities in a major way.

to roll up their sleeves and give back to the community through fund-raising and volunteer contributions. The organization was originally formed by a group of men who met while attending a personal development seminar in 2007. AZ Eagles was born out of the founders’ realization that they had the potential to make a difference. The organization now boasts over seventy members that comprise men and women from differing professions and backgrounds. All have taken it upon themselves to create positive changes in Arizona communities.

AZ Eagles has an impressive list of charities they have donated to or volunteered for, such as UMOM, Phoenix Youth at Risk, YMCA/Chauncey Ranch, Sunshine Acres, West Valley Child Crises

Center, AZ Coalition for Domestic Violence, Helping Hands for Single Moms, PSI World, Camp Choice programs, Horses Help, The Sojourner Center, Christmas Giving Day, and The New Life Center. In their inaugural year, they raised more than $60,000 for these charities and managed to double their membership numbers. In 2008, their collected funds jumped to $100,000, and they donated over 800 man-hours of volunteer time, resulting in the increase of volunteer events from once per quarter to bimonthly. Two of the special annual events that AZ Eagles hosts are the Halloween Bash and the Golf Tournament.

Raising funds for local charities takes a lot of work, but volunteering is also a major part of AZ Eagles’ criteria. According to the organization, “a personal human

Mentoring at-risk youth, painting shelters, and building affordable housing for the homeless are just a few examples of the contributions AZ Eagles has gladly made to the community.

The original founders are Arizona transplants. Al Paparelli, president, moved to Phoenix from Detroit in 1981. He is currently a successful real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Brothers Realty and spends a great deal of his time as an adult mentor for Phoenix Youth At Risk. All three of Paparelli’s children are members of AZ Eagles, and they are proud that their father is the first to reach into his own pocket to donate to the organization. Vice President Tom Cerino moved to Arizona at the age of 13. With a successful consulting

practice and five television shows under his belt, Cerino still finds the time to provide life coaching and raise funds for families in need. The vision and backbone of the organization have been developed by these two men, and it takes all the volunteers to follow the vision through and flesh out those bones.

Cactus Derbies

W

hen the first horseless carriage sputtered and jerked into Arizona soon after the dawning of the twentieth century, there came a public demand for better roads. In order to promote highway construction, road races called Cactus Derbies were staged between Los Angeles and Phoenix. These races, which carried on from 1908–1914, combined all the elements of a Keystone Kops movie, a melodrama, and a political convention. Legendary racecar drivers like Cliff Durant, Olin Davis, Louis Chevrolet, and Barney Oldfield competed on roads that were no more than wagon trails. There were no gas stations or garages, so the drivers had to pack their essentials in the car.

1914. This race would take a northerly route, traveling from Los Angeles to Needles, then over notorious Oatman Pass to Ash Fork before turning south to Prescott. Then it was across the rugged mountains to Phoenix—a total distance of some 700 miles.

Each night, the racecars were locked inside horse corrals, which were guarded to keep competitors from tampering with one another’s machines.

The three-day race began in Los Angeles in a driving rainstorm. Spectators, promoters, and boosters traveling by the Santa Fe Railroad’s “Howdy Special” rode along to enjoy the spectacle. Each night, boosters wearing colorful costumes of red and black along with a cap with Howdy emblazoned across the front took over the town, partying until the wee hours, then reboarding to the next overnight stop.

Cliff Durant, whose brother W.C. would found General Motors, attempted to cross the bridge going full speed in his Chevrolet #2.

He missed the planks and drove a hundred yards on the ties, tearing up his tires.

His racing partner, Louis Chevrolet, didn’t fare any better. His Chevrolet #1 was done in by a helpful sheepherder when he stopped to fill his gas tank. Drivers used the same type of cans for gasoline as they did for water, and the sheepherder unwittingly poured the contents of a water can into the gas tank. Chevrolet and Durant combined parts of both cars and went on to complete the race. (Ironically, Chevrolet is believed to be a French corruption of “goat’s milk.”)

Near Kingman, Bill Carlson’s Maxwell broke down, forcing him to walk into town for spare parts. When he returned, thieves had stripped his auto. This might have been America’s first case of auto-parts theft.

Olin Davis left the race when his car executed a perfect swan dive off a mountain road in Copper Basin, south of Prescott.

Racing’s bad boy, Barney Oldfield, a colorful, cigar-chomping free spirit driving a white Stutz-Bearcat, was the favorite.

Sportswriters had said the “grand old man of racing” was washed up. He’d been banished for an unauthorized race against heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson in 1910. But Oldfield navigated the rainslick roads with the skill of a muleskinner.

It wasn’t without some drama, however.

In the gold-mining town of Oatman, he needed to recruit some miners to push him up treacherous Oatman Hill. Then he blew a tire near Kingman and had to drive several miles on the rim. While crossing New River, he nearly sank in quicksand and had to be pulled out by a mule team. His mud-splattered Stutz Bearcat raced into the fairgrounds at Phoenix to take first place.

Two years later, he would become the first to lap the Indianapolis Speedway at 100 miles per hour.

Oldfield’s victory was overshadowed, however, by Bill Bramlett, who finished fifth. Bramlett’s Cadillac wobbled across the finish line after a harrowing series of mishaps. Earlier, he’d slid off a mountain road near Wickenburg and done a perfect barrel roll down the hill, landing right side up. A few miles later, he bogged down in quicksand and had to be hauled out.

Outside of Phoenix, he slid into a fence, breaking his steering mechanism. He resourcefully pulled up a couple of fence posts and spliced them together to replace the broken parts. He crossed the finish line at the fairgrounds amidst the roar of appreciative spectators. Only seven of the twenty starters reached Phoenix.

That night, a celebration was held in the Adams Hotel in downtown Phoenix.

Barney Oldfield was awarded the diamond-studded medal proclaiming him Master Driver of the World, and visionaries proclaimed that one day the automobile would pass from the hands of professional drivers and the novelty of the upper classes to become an essential fixture in the lives of the common folk.

is better remembered today by the name of the car he designed and first produced in 1911. The Swiss-French-born automotive genius, one of the world’s greatest drivers, sold his interest in Chevrolet Motor Company in 1914 to his partner W.C. Durant. Chevrolet was angered when Durant decided to make the highpriced Chevrolet a cheaper car so he could compete with Ford. Had Chevrolet not made the rash move, he would have been a multimillionaire. Instead, he died nearly penniless.

pringtime brings incredible opportunity for rebirth, rejuvenation, and all things new and fresh. By evaluating behaviors and attitudes that no longer serve others or me, I welcome the approaching spring season as a chance to make a bigger difference in the world.

This commitment to contributing to others is what calls me into action. It is the ultimate pledge to ensure that the team wins on a grand scale.

For many years, I felt that if I made the effort to “do good,” then that was all that mattered. I recently learned that I was “playing small” with that attitude. Several months ago, a close friend inspired me to become a bone marrow donor. She said someone would contact me on how to proceed, so I waited patiently for instructions on how to help someone in need.

Weeks and weeks passed without receiving any correspondence. My friend could not believe I had not been contacted. I was not terribly disappointed because I was proud of myself for making the choice

to be a donor. I was totally playing small.

A few weeks later, I met someone suffering from leukemia. She was waiting for a bone marrow transplant. It was during our conversation that I realized how stopping at the good intentions—I called it “being right”—was preventing someone from living life powerfully. Yes, I did make the effort to be a donor by expressing my interest. But when someone’s life is at stake, a person who loves others does not stop there. It was at this time I chose a different path. I committed to walking the talk so that others could win. It was important they be happy and live life fully. Within one day of making this paradigm shift, I had a conversation with the National Registry and a donor kit was mailed to me. I am now on track to becoming a bone marrow donor. I am playing big and it feels amazing.

I encourage you to make your intention your first step and take up the talk-walk as well. This is the ultimate definition of team. We all have to win. Realize that not following up on good intentions rarely allows you to be happy.

I welcome the approaching spring season as a chance to make a bigger difference in the world.

he Arizona Music Fest has produced spectacular entertainment for nearly twenty years. This year continues that tradition with an extremely talented trio of artists. Pianist Navah Perlman, violinist Giora Schmidt, and cellist Zuill Bailey combine to produce a remarkable sound that has been perfected over the course of their ten years of performing together.

Perlman first took to the keys at 6 years old. She would begin her performance career at the young age of 14, and her talent for performing led her to study at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City. Perlman’s high level of skill has come with an enormous amount of dedication. When asked about the driving force behind her determination, Perlman responded, “My inspiration to have a career as a pianist came from my love of the sound of the piano and the piano repertoire.”

Zuill Bailey is widely considered as one of the most influential cellists of his generation. His unique blend of finesse and personality result in fervent perfor-

mance. Bailey has played in numerous symphonies across North America. His talent has propelled him to working with such distinguished conductors as Alan Gilbert and Perlman’s renowned father, Itzhak Perlman.

With his intensely mesmerizing style, Giora Schmidt’s violin provides the flourish and bravado. His journey on the violin began at the age of 4. Like Perlman, he was trained at Juilliard, and his training is clearly apparent during his performances.

Schmidt has played across the world at some of the most highly acclaimed venues, from the Kennedy Center to Carnegie Hall.

Following their performance at the 2009 Arizona Music Fest, the trio has an exciting trip planned for next year.

They are heading out across the world to play Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Itzhak Perlman. It will definitely be a wonderful experience for all who can attend.

Our household gained quite a few new battery-operated gifts over the holidays, including a new digital camera and a remote-control car.

The batteries don’t seem to last very long, and I was wondering how I can tell which batteries will last the longest.

A

First, let’s review a little bit of physics—sorry. Every electrical device generates or uses a certain amount of power, measured in watts.

Think about lightbulbs: a 100W bulb is brighter than a 40W one and therefore uses more power. The current required to drive the device is measured in amperes, or amps. The more powerful something is, the more amps it will use. Consider your electrical extension cords—they are rated in amps, and the thick higher amperage capacity cords are used to connect larger garden or power tools, as compared with thin ones that can be used with a radio or desk lamp. Battery-powered devices use amps in the same way that something connected to an outlet does, with the exception that their power source has a finite capacity. So, how do you know how long your batteries will last?

Introducing the time component gives us the capacity of a battery, measured in milliampere-hours (mAh).

A battery rated at 1000mAh is saying it will provide 1000 mAh (or 1 amp) for one hour, and then it will be dead.

You can subdivide this by the current requirement of your device and estimate the operating time. If everything were perfect and there were no other 42

losses, then if your device needs 50 mAh and you had a 1000 mAh battery, it would run for twenty hours.

Most battery-powered devices do not have a constant current draw, and batteries do lose charge when not used and change characteristics at different temps, so it’s not possible to easily calculate things exactly. For example, if you have a digital camera and are constantly reviewing photos on the LCD and using the flash a lot, the batteries will run out quicker, as these two features represent the highest power or current draw.

The bottom line is this: The greater the mAh rating, the longer a battery will last. It’s easiest to think that with all other things being equal, a battery with a rating of 2000mAh will last twice as long as one rated at 1000mAh.

The simple answer is, “Technically, yes,” but more than likely, “Maybe.” The latest cellular networks, known as 3G or thirdgeneration, have data services designed specifically for providing such access. This is the way that many of us now reach our e-mails when we’re not at our home computers. In theory, if you have a phone that provides broadband access, all you need is a cable to connect to your laptop and the right software to tap into your phone’s broadband connection. The catch often comes with the software in your phone and how your service provider has enabled (or not) the service. The majority of wireless carriers have dedicated cards that will plug into your laptop so you can take advantage of their broadband services when away from a WiFi signal. It’s the same service as on your cell phone, but a carrier may want you to sign up for both services and therefore restrict access from the cell phone. If you need Internet access on your laptop, then wireless broadband is the answer, and a dedicated card will provide you with a connection. Whether you can use your cell phone service will depend on your carrier. Give them a call and see what options they offer.

s we all are well aware, America’s culture is as diverse as it is identifiable. Thanks to places like the Irish Cultural Center, we can experience a taste of foreign culture and effectively integrate the traditions of other countries into our overarching American culture. The center is a rare gem in the Valley of the Sun; there are few prominent individual cultural organizations in the area and, it seems, none so well established or active in the community as the Irish Cultural Center. With help from the Phoenix Sister Cities Commission, which is instrumental in connecting Valley residents with others around the world, the City of Phoenix and the Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation established the center in 1998 and since have made it their mission to foster a relationship between the people of Phoenix and the people of Ireland.

Establishing connections with people of other cultures and traditions serves to broaden our horizons, develop our worldview, and strengthen our sense of a common human spirit. Why Ireland specifically? The Emerald Isle doesn’t simply serve up some sensational scenery.

It boasts a rich history that may have taken root as long ago as 6000 B.C. and includes a beloved patron saint and infamous Viking invasions. According to Ireland’s official tourist Web site, an estimated 80 million people claim Irish ancestry. It is a land steeped in tradition and shrouded 44

in enchantment and lauded myths. St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated across the globe by leprechaun lovers and religious people alike. The acclaimed Riverdance company has popularized traditional Irish dancing, while Irish transplants have brought with them to America one of the best-loved working class-rooted traditions: the Irish pub—a place of merriment, conversation, authentic Irish fare and beer, and music.

he Shops at Norterra at Happy Valley Road and the I-17 is approaching the one-year anniversary of its grand opening. Since April 2008, the retail center has provided its region of the North Valley with 350,000 square feet of much-needed shopping, food, and entertainment. The marketplace is home to twenty shops, thirteen restaurants, four service merchants, and a fourteen-screen Harkins theater. How Do You Make Money?

he often-quoted curse “May you live in interesting times” seems to aptly describe our current situation and fragile economy. While solid business planning and strategy should always be a prerequisite, many businesses forgo these essentials during positive economic times and manage to make money. When something is placed under stress, cracks and weaknesses are exposed that otherwise would not be apparent. It is clear that many businesses are now struggling due to a lack of strategic fundamentals.

A question I always ask clients is, “How do you make money?” This is often followed by a deer-in-the-headlights expression and a comment similar to “Well, I go out and sell as much of my (fill in the blank) as I can.”

While it’s true that nobody ever made much money by not selling something, this is not really what the question is all about.

I can show you many companies who have sold plenty and maintain revenue streams we would all be jealous of but who still have gone out of business!

It’s not all about selling, but having a well thought-out, sustainable, scalable business model that will allow your business to flourish and grow. A successful business is 58

one that provides a product that meets a defined market and consumer need, delivers value and benefit, and can consistently keep revenues growing faster than costs.

It’s this last part that many businesses fail to consider until it’s too late. Many businesses falter as they begin to see success and stumble even more so when placed under the stress of a weak economy. This is due to a lack of scalability in their business model. In the start-up phase, most of the work is done by the principles who don’t necessarily need to get paid—they see this as their investment or “sweat equity.” Once things are moving, staff are hired and they must be paid; this affects the business and cash-flow model significantly. No matter how much or little you sell, the rent must be paid and so must the staff. If you have a service-based offering, this issue can be extremely acute, as the revenue-to-staff relationship is 100 percent linear. With a product-based business, operational and manufacturing efficiencies can enable a more logarithmic staff-to-revenue and -profit relationship; however, unless balanced and managed appropriately, it can easily lead to negative cash-flow scenarios.

Understanding the fundamental relationships between all the cost and profit centers of your business is essential. A wellthought-out business model will do this for

you. It will help you plan for growth and allow you to do scenario planning—e.g., what will the effect on my business be in various economies, with differing staff and product-cost profiles? While a complete model can be complex, a good start can be made by identifying and separating fixed and variable costs. Fixed costs will be all those that you must cover, no matter how much you sell. Variable costs are those related to providing your product or service. To break even, the difference between your revenue and variable costs (sales margin) must equal your fixed costs. Accurately understanding your sales margin is key to making money.

Once you have reached “break-even,” your margin percentage will tell you how much you get to keep (your profit) from every dollar in sales. If you’re not making money, you have questions to ask and decisions to make. If your business model is viable, is it efficient and scalable, or are you overburdening the business with unnecessary fixed costs? How can you increase your ROI (return on investment) in marketing?

The best business decisions are made by those with the most information. Don’t make decisions about your future business while shooting from the hip. Plan appropriately and create a business model that will show you exactly how you make money!

HELI-SKIING

Heli-skiing is just what the name suggests: skiing on an off-trail downhill path that can only be accessed by a helicopter. This often means remote locations but it can also mean higher terrains, steeper slopes, and a harderto-control natural environment. Skiers who try heli-skiing, however, usually come back for one particular reason: virgin powder snow, which cannot be found anywhere else, no matter how state-of-the-art a ski resort is.

While all abilities of skiers and snowboarders are welcome, heli-skiing may not be the best approach for someone who has never skied before, as the rugged terrain and the many natural obstacles require some good technical handling and abilities.

EpicQuest, a Jackson Hole, Wyoming-based company organizing heli-skiing trips, says the sport depends largely on the reputation of the companies organizing the trips. “For example, our personal experience give us access to remote—even untouched—locations that few people have ever seen or experienced,” said Craig Pattee, chief executive officer at EpicQuest. Sun Valley, Idaho, and Alaska (especially the Tordrillo Mountain range) are top destinations.

ULTIMATE

Ultimate (formerly known as extreme or ultimate frisbee) has become one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, with an estimated 100,000-plus competitors.

According to Michael Baccarini, coauthor of Essential Ultimate, the game appeals to those new to team sports because the simple rules make it easy to learn.

“As with any sport, higher levels of play demand greater skill, physical conditioning, and athleticism, but participation is relative and learning the basics is easy,” Baccarini says. This means players as young as 8 and as old as 55 have been seen in organized official teams.

So what exactly is Ultimate? Imagine playing Frisbee on a large soccer field, with scoring rules similar to those of American football and an end zone like the one in rugby. Now add lots of running (except when you’re actually holding the disc) and hanging throws, and you somewhat get the idea of what Ultimate is all about. “Anyone who can throw and catch the disc can play ultimate,” Baccarini says.

KORFBALL

At first view, korfball looks a lot like basketball, except for the fact that there is no dribbling and the teams must be co-ed, probably to retain a sense of cooperation: two men and two women on each side of the court. Karla Wolters, a coach at Hope College in Holland, Mich. (coincidentally, the game has Dutch roots), introduced the sport in the U.S., but korfball has been around since the beginning of the twentieth century, when it was mainly played in the Netherlands and was highly controversial (co-ed activities were not considered quite proper then).

Korfball baskets are higher than those in basketball (11½ feet as opposed to 10 feet). Unlike basketball, where a player with the ball who is closely guarded must pass, shoot, or move toward the basket within five seconds, there is no such rule in korfball. Also, unlike basketball, defenders are not allowed to touch their opponents or slap the ball out of their hands if the opponent is in possession of it. “No one player can dominate the game,” Wolters says.

“Since there is no dribbling, the ball has to be passed from one teammate to another.”

Korfball also employs the sportsmanship rule that says if a player falls down, play is temporarily stopped until the player can get up, even if the opposing team could take advantage of the fall. Korfball is definitely a kinder, gentler game than basketball.

olf, tennis, mountain biking, hiking, that early morning jog with the dog and your iPod—many sports that Arizona men choose to participate in take place outdoors and are very challenging to your skin.

Arizona leads the nation in basal cell carcinoma diagnosis, the most common type of skin cancer, but many instances can be prevented through consistent use of sunblock, hats, and protective clothing, and by limiting the amount of time your skin is exposed to the sun. One of the most frequently asked questions about sunscreens and sunblocks is what the difference is between the two.

A sunscreen is an ingredient commonly used in moisturizers, hair products, and other external liquids and creams used daily. Sunscreens provide a filter for limited (up to two hours) daily exposure to the sun, such as driving or walking to and from the car. Longer exposure requires a sunblock. Sports that take place in water or snow make necessary the use of a waterproof sunblock to prevent it from easily wearing off from moisture. The best waterproof sunblock has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 40 or more and is a zinc oxide-based product. Washable nonwaterproof sunblocks are often combined with a titanium dioxide base and a moisturizer and are recommended for long exposure to the desert sun—think golfing or hiking.

They will protect the skin, can be easily reapplied, and are noncomedogenic—less prone to cause blackheads or whiteheads.

A great facial that deep-cleanses the pores and rehydrates your skin is vital to the prevention of premature aging in active men. It also protects against adult acne, a common term used to describe acne that appears past the adolescent years and often in men who stay active outdoors. Products that are effective on men’s skin are aloe- or seaweed-based, as they are the most compatible with skin, feel very light, and don’t leave a greasy sheen.

Lexus Delivers the Perfect SUV in the RX 350

P

erfect” is as much a state of being as it is a state of mind. A moment in time, something felt, something you simply know. There are few perfect things, and most are intangible. A hot cup of coffee on Sunday morning. Finishing a favorite book, for the second time.

When it comes to things, who can name even a few? A wedding ring, a pair of glasses, or a favorite pair of shoes you hope will outlive you. The last car I reviewed that was perfect was the 2004 MercedesBenz E55 AMG. I’ve driven scores of test vehicles since then, and even fell in love a time or two, but I haven’t found another perfect ride until I drove the 2009 Lexus RX 350. An evolution since it first went on sale in 1998 as the RX 300, this segmentdefining car-based luxury SUV is now more finely appointed and powerful, quieter, better handling and safer than ever.

The RX 350 is equipped with a 3.5-liter 270 horsepower V-6 engine matched to a silky-smooth five-speed automatic transmission in either a front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive configuration. There is also a hybrid-powered RX 400h, which gets a continuously variable transmission.

I tested the AWD version that starts with a delivered base price of $39,665. Heated front seats, rain-sensing wipers and headlamp washers, navigation system with backup camera and towing package added $3,475 for a nicely appointed sticker of $43,140.

Lexus didn’t stop there. The company added in $3,880 worth of Pebble Beach Edition fluff (special wheels, badges and 68

Rated at 17 mpg city and 22 highway, expect something on the high side of 20 for mixed driving as long as you keep the quick starts to a minimum. The RX 350 offers nimble handling and very brisk acceleration, speeding up to 60 mph from a standstill in just over seven seconds. t’s that time of year again! The champagne has been popped, we’ve stayed up until midnight with Dick Clark, we’ve reminisced about the past year, and we’ve made some resolutions for this New Year. The year 2009 is sure to be an exciting and interesting time for small-business owners, and New Year’s resolutions are a great way to get yourself focused on a productive year of business. If you’ve found it difficult to stick to yours, we have a few resolution suggestions that will keep you moving onward and upward as the months go by. It’s never too late to make some resolutions.

Keep your chin up.

This is one of those “harder than it sounds” resolutions. Let’s face it: things are looking gloomy for a lot of businesses during the current recession, and if you have a small business, you may be holding on for dear life right now. But the reality is that no 72

matter how hard it gets, being discouraged and panicking will only make it worse. In fact, you can literally sabotage yourself by worrying so much that you end up manifesting your fears. Instead, resolve to stay positive and keep yourself from dwelling on the “what ifs.”

Many of us become so engrossed in running our businesses that we may forget how important it is to continue educating ourselves in order to stay competitive. Make a commitment to periodically enroll in training, seminars, and classes that can keep you up to date on the rapidly changing practices and technologies in the marketplace. It may mean setting aside some time and spending a little money, but in the end, it really is an investment in your business.

Take care of yourself.

You simply cannot ignore your physical, emotional, and spiritual needs and expect

to be successful. Granted, hard work and dedication are essential to making a small business work, but it must also be tempered with rest and relaxation; exercise, nutrition and sleep; nurturing relationships and taking time to enjoy your family. If you find yourself unbalanced more often than not, sit down and evaluate how you can reprioritize your time to better take care of you.

Set specific, attainable goals.

Goal setting is one of the most basic of business practices; but the key to reaching your goals is making sure they are both specific and attainable. Having small weekly, monthly, and quarterly goals is a great way to keep yourself moving forward toward your larger annual goals; and it keeps you from being overwhelmed by the idea of attacking the big goals all at one time.

Celebrate your successes.

Reaching your goals is great, but to really make them count, it’s important to take the time to acknowledge and celebrate

them, too. Share your successes with friends, family, and employees. Reward yourself in small ways—perhaps going to dinner or taking the afternoon off to play golf—as a way to recognize your own hard work.

A simple blog to announce new products, let people know about special promotions, or relay industry information to your clientele is absolutely invaluable. A blog is free and easy to maintain, and it will give you additional visibility on the Internet, which will only help your business grow.

he first time you realized that a stage of life had left you in the sawdust might have been the time you didn’t make the all-star kindergarten junior soccer team. Or how about when the National Ballet School officials trolled your second-grade dance class for divas and let you know they wouldn’t be back for you in grade three—or ever? And so began the long series of life’s little expiration dates.

Several passages leave greasy pencil marks on your life’s scorecard. Some are merely annoyances; others are proof that you are not now nor ever will you be special enough to be included in certain talented subsets. Your chance of becoming a musical genius, for example, disappears by age 10. Oh yes, there’s still time to be a proficient musical accompanist, or a technician, or to strum a guitar at family gatherings and impress the less musical. But the Majestic Mozart Award will go to someone else.

But hey, there’s still time to train for a marathon, and you can build a kayak anytime you fancy. Ditto for learning a language or traveling.

In fact, there’s no statute of limitations on lots of life’s better offerings.

The few areas that are roped off give some people the biggest grief. Few people really believe that motherhood is a great idea at 67. Nor is there much of a payoff to putting off stretching and exercising until gravity does you in. Today is the day to write down what you really want to accomplish before they cart you away. Here are some entries for consideration:

• Am I going to fling myself into a career? If I do, will I be able to hit the pause button long enough to explore family-making possibilities, if that’s in my anticipatory future?

• Do I want to live farther than 27 feet from my birthplace/parents/friends/university? When will I do this? Have I gathered the brochures on vaccines and visas necessary for a hike to New Guinea?

• How important is it that I achieve my personal bests? Do I need to finish the 12K run in under two hours?

Life is like a piñata—you know there’s good stuff in there, but it sure takes a lot of motivation and a stick to break through. And don’t be afraid to bend over and reach out for what you want. As Oscar Wilde once said, “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”

Wow, I didn’t know anyone saw that newscast. In response to your question—yes, online date rape does happen. The Internet is a good way to meet someone; however, you have to use some common sense. First dates should be made in public, such as for coffee or lunch. Get information about the person before meeting him, and tell friends where you are going and that you will be checking in. Remember to also give them the information about whom you are going with. Always drive yourself to the destination. And lastly, never leave your drink alone for a second! Dating is fun—just use some common sense before you meet someone for the first time.

n this era of increasing media technology, we have so much often-differing information at our fingertips that it can be overwhelming and confusing to tell which to follow and which to dump. Pet owners find this true when they want to find out how to keep their furry friends healthy.

We see cute ads on TV promoting flea and tick products. There are hundreds of thousands of pet advice postings from often-unqualified groups on the Internet. We are offered nutritional advice from inexpert pet store help and discover unlicensed pet breeders establishing vaccine schedules when that should be the veterinarian’s job. As the information mounts and conflicts, a pet owner may ask, “What do I do now?”

The answer is contact your professional veterinary care provider. If you were seeking tax advice, would you trust your finances to a check-cashing establishment or a stranger sending you a spam e-mail, or to a certified public accountant? To most, seeking advice from a veterinarian would appear to be the obvious choice; however, when

it comes to pet care, everyone seems to have an opinion, whether it is about the latest pet products, a new natural raw diet, or available medical treatments.

Doctors, scientists, and researchers in the animal health profession spend innumerable hours every year researching and developing new products, nutritionally balanced foods, and medical treatments to enrich and extend the life of your pet. Cats Daphne Moon is our not-so-little love bug, once she gets to know you. She will rub against your arm, your leg— anything’ll do when she is feeling frisky. She is a very social 4-yearold girl, but only when she feels comfortable in her environment. Once she gets used to her environment, she’ll be your best friend, begging for petting and following you around the house. Daphne would prefer a single-cat household. Once Sutter gets to know you, it’s difficult to keep him off your lap. His big beautiful eyes close with deep approval as you pet him. If you don’t pet him quickly enough, he may nudge you along with a friendly head butt or tap of the paw. Sutter is a one-year-old domestic medium hair. He may do best in a home with no other cats, for while he is people-friendly, he does seem to be somewhat territorial and enjoys his space. Onions, goat cheese, and thyme awaken the palate in this wintertime tart

rimming with robust flavor, members of the allium family—onions, garlic, leeks, scallions, chives, and shallots—are routinely used to add depth of flavor to savory dishes. What’s more, they are rich sources of antioxidants and have long been called upon for their medicinal properties. These veggies, however, rarely star in the kitchen; instead, they take supporting roles and allow more mellow-flavored vegetables to shine.

In this tart, onions are caramelized with brown sugar, balsamic vinegar, and thyme and then are baked in a flaky crust and topped with tangy goat cheese. Paired with a light green salad, it’s perfect for brunch, lunch, or dinner. While hearty and comforting, this vegetarian dish is also a welcome respite from the heavy meat-based dishes of the holiday season. After taking your first bite, you’ll agree that the tears you shed during preparation were well worth it.

Caramelized-Onion Tart with Goat Cheese and Thyme Serves 6–8 Recipe developed by Hilary Malone Ingredients: 2 1/4 tsp. dry active yeast 1/2 cup warm water (100ºF to 115ºF) 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 egg 1/3 cup olive oil 2 tsp. salt 3 pounds brown or yellow onions, thinly sliced 1/2 tsp. pepper 1 tbsp. brown sugar 2 tbsp. balsamic vinegar 1 tbsp. dried thyme leaves 1/2 cup finely grated parmesan cheese 3 ounces soft goat cheese, crumbled Preparation: Mix yeast and warm water in a small bowl and let stand until foamy (approximately five minutes).

Measure flour in a medium bowl; make a well in the center, and add yeast mixture.

Whisk together egg, one tablespoon of

olive oil and one teaspoon of salt. Add egg mixture to the yeast and incorporate the flour gradually until a soft dough forms.

Turn dough out onto a well-floured surface and knead until smooth (around five minutes). Transfer the dough to an oiled bowl and cover. Allow dough to rise in a warm, draft-free place until doubled in size (approximately one hour).

Meanwhile, place remaining olive oil and onions in a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook until onions are soft and golden brown, stirring occasionally for around one hour. Add remaining teaspoon of salt and the pepper, sugar, balsamic vinegar, and thyme. Cook for another five minutes, then remove from heat and set aside to cool.

Preheat oven to 375ºF. On a floured surface, knead dough just enough to deflate.

On a heavy baking sheet, pat dough evenly into a rectangle, turning up the edges.

Sprinkle dough with parmesan cheese and spread caramelized onions evenly over top.

Bake tart until the crust is golden brown (approximately 30 minutes). Sprinkle with goat cheese and serve warm.
