Veterinarian Writes Award-Winning Mystery comm. spotlight

When Eileen Brady started to write her mystery novel, she wanted to make sure she conveyed the real medicine of a veterinarian’s office in her book “Muzzled.” Brady started writing 15 years ago for her children, but was always interested in writing a novel. A big mystery fan, Brady said she read Agatha Christie backward and forward. “I was very impressed with the way she would slide her clues into her plots.” Upon moving to Arizona, Brady began taking classes on writing fiction and joined a writers’ critique group. Her story “Muzzled” began as a story she was working on with the group. The book took about a year to write. “I had been submitting it to my critique group over that year period and they had been giving me suggestions and very strongly told to me to enter the classifieds

contest with it.” She submitted the polished manuscript, originally titled “Dog Shows are Murder,” to Poisoned Pen Press, winning the 2013 Discover Mystery award. Brady drew on her experiences as a veterinarian to write “Muzzled.” Brady has been a veterinarian since 1983 practicing on the East Coast for a number of years and moving to Scottsdale with her husband, also a veterinarian, in 1997. She and her husband own the Scaredy Cat Hospital in Scottsdale, a cats-only veterinarian clinic. “A lot of people don’t understand what it’s like to be a veterinarian, work for a veterinarian and what the the ins and outs of a veterinarian hospital are,” Brady said. “What I wanted to do was give

She said she’s always thinking one book ahead. Animal lovers will relate to the book. “Anybody who loves animals will love the book,” Brady shared. “Everything is kept very light. people real medicine, real medical issues and problems, and I also wanted to have a little fun with animals and the people who own them.” She’s blended mystery and humor to craft “Muzzled.” Kate Turner, her protagonist, is a veterinarian who’s experienced her share of strange house calls, but nothing could prepare her for a murder scene. When she finds an elderly couple shot dead and their prize Cavalier King Charles spaniels running wild, Kate immediately informs the authorities. Kate is framed for murder, doesn’t know who she can trust, but it’s up to her to figure out the clues. Brady is hard at work on the second novel in the series. “I did envision it as a series. I’ve been very lucky, I’ve got great reviews...everybody seems

Good news for residents near Mountain View Park. AT&T has backed off its request to build a cellphone tower next to the park’s baseball field. The decision was made after McCormick Ranch residents rallied in opposition to the request. Residents said it would be ugly, dangerous and detrimental to their property values. However (there’s always a “however”), AT&T’s Jerry Fuentes told the Arizona Republic that a tower is needed in the park to fill a gap in coverage. By Alison Stanton Gilbert Houseaux began training in martial arts in 1961, when he was a teenager living in a small town in France. “My father wanted me to be a wellrounded person, and I wasn’t a big guy at the time, so I started to learn judo,” he said. Although it was “quite an effort” for his parents to take him to the dojo three to five times a week to train in martial arts, Houseaux, who now resides in Scottsdale, loved judo so much, he said they were happy to do it. Five years after he began learning judo, Houseaux earned his first black belt. He then turned his attention to the art of pressure points and energy, and by 2011, he reached the rank of a seventh degree grand master in both kyusho-jitsu—the field of martial arts relating to pressure points—and Ryukyu Kempo, a style of karate. “I love to study, and I became very interested in different aspects of martial arts. I like the way you don’t just get a belt and then you are done, but instead that it’s a lifelong study,” he said. Recently, all of Houseaux’s hard work and dedication to martial arts paid off. Recently, he was inducted into the International Karate and Kickboxing Hall of Fame. Other past inductees include Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris. Although Houseaux has had his share of changes and challenges over the years, two things have remained consistent in his life—his love for studying martial arts and his determination to succeed.

“My life is the true story of an immigrant coming from nothing,” Houseaux said. About 35 years ago, he left France bound for New York City. With just $20 in his pocket and a strong desire to be successful, Houseaux worked as a street artist before heading west for Arizona, where he decided to settle down. Just over a year ago, Houseaux became a U.S. citizen. In addition to his work as a Realtor for Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty, Houseaux says he also enjoys teaching others about martial arts, as well as the importance of never giving up, no matter what. “I like to share what I know when I teach seminars. I did incredible things just to survive, and I see what it takes to resolve problems. I try to teach that in my seminars,” he said. Lisa Balbona works with Houseaux at Russ Lyon Sotheby’s. She said she is impressed by the way he is still open to learning as much as he can about martial arts, even though he has already achieved such great success. “Gilbert’s a lover of life, very disciplined and involved in a lot of things,” she said. “He’s dedicated to martial arts and especially young people, and is very giving of his time.” Houseaux says that his story is proof positive that if people pursue things in life that they enjoy and work as hard as they can, success will come their way. “As I like to say, ‘Work hard, walk tall, talk straight and everything will happen,’” he said.

Gilbert Houseaux began studying martial arts when he was a teenager living in France. Recently, he was inducted into the International Karate and Kickboxing Hall of Fame.

Notre Dame Prep Grad Wins Robotics Scholarship Recent Notre Dame Prep graduate and Robotics Club member Jennifer Delgado is a recipient of the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) scholarship for robotics. FIRST hosts robotics competitions at high schools across the country and internationally. This year, the NDP Robotics Club was up against 50 high schools in the Arizona competition and also competed at the Cashman Convention Center in Las Vegas. Delgado will attend Gonzaga University in the fall as an engineering student. The FIRST scholarship is $3,000 per year and is renewable for four years of college as long as she continues to study engineering. The criteria for the scholarship included a teacher recommendation letter, active participation in the Robotics Club and an optional essay. According to FIRST, “Our mission is to show students of every age that science, technology and problemsolving are not only fun and rewarding, but are proven paths to successful careers and a bright future for us all.” Delgado said she has Robotics Club to thank for the scholarship. “I spent a lot of time in Robotics Club,” she said. “I was there every day after school and all day on some Saturdays.”

Two Charter Schools Opening Near The Pavilions By Scott Shumaker

In August, Great Hearts Academies, a Phoenix-based nonprofit charter school organization, will open two new schools near The Pavilions at Talking Stick at the Salt River PimaMaricopa Indian Community. The new schools are Archway Cicero, a kindergarten through fifth grade facility, and Cicero Prep, a sixth through 12th grade school, and are being built on the former location of Fiddlesticks. The schools will roll out grades kindergarten through seventh grades in phase one and phase two through 12th grade. It will bring the total number of schools under Great Hearts’ umbrella to 21, with 19 in Arizona and two in Texas. Dr. Mark Discher, the headmaster for the Cicero schools, said construction is on schedule for an Aug. 11 opening. He is hiring the last two of 57 staff positions for the schools.

Fashion in the ‘50s

In the 1950s, dressmakers, silversmiths, leather workers and artists transformed Fifth Avenue, east of Scottsdale Road, into a fashion hub that helped propel the booming city to national prominence and added a touch of glamour to the city that remains today. A photographic essay in a 1956 issue of Life Magazine titled “Sands of Desert Turn Gold,” by Nina Leen, featured many Fifth Avenue fashions and brought national attention to Scottsdale’s shopping scene. Fifth Avenue designers also showed off their latest looks to eager fashionistas through runway fashion shows in the street. Lloyd Kiva New, a Cherokee leather worker who helped found Scottsdale’s new fashion Mecca, hosted these open-air fashion shows. New proudly infused his

creations with Native American-inspired elements, and employed as many as 15 Native American craftsmen in his studio. One signature look that gained national popularity was the Squaw Dress. The style was influenced by Pueblo, Navajo, Western Apache and Mexican skirt styles. Squaw Dresses became popular in part because they could be created at home and accessorized and modified in many different ways.

According to www.saltriverstories.org, even high-end boutiques in Beverly Hills and New York City clamored to feature Scottsdale’s “Westerninflected” designs.

The artists and craftsman who created the in-demand fashion shops lining Fifth Avenue organized runway shows in the street during winter months in the 1950s. Fall Good Time For Immunizations and Physicals

By Tracy House Schools have been working all summer to welcome the kiddos back through the classroom doors and to ensure the kids are walking into the building healthy. So it might be a good time to schedule that back-to-school physical and verify the kids are up to date on their immunizations. Dr. Nandini Kanagal from Scottsdale Children’s Group shared some suggestions about back-to-school physicals and immunizations. “Back to school is a good time to get their annual physical,” Kanagal said. “It’s recommended at least once a year.” She said it’s important to make sure children are growing properly and changes in the body are age appropriate. Physicians will check for diabetes and scoliosis depending on the age.

Children ages 4 to 6 are ready for their kindergarten immunizations, which is the back-to-school boosters. The next major step in vaccinations is at age 10 for the combination whooping cough and tetanus vaccine, and then at 11 years old for the meningitis vaccine, which requires a booster dose at age 16. “Another vaccine that is recommended after age 11 is the HPV vaccine—which is the human papillomavirus vaccine,” Kanagal said. “It tends to protect both boys and girls against four strains of human papillomavirus which causes genital warts and cervical cancer in girls, and genital warts and anal rectal cancer in boys. It is a sexually transmitted disease.” It is a series of three shots. Going into high school,

It is something you get from food and water,” Kanagal said. “I would recommend it for all kids.” For all ages, annual physicals are a good time for parents and physicians to address emotional health, safety, sexual activity for older children, abstinence, driving safety, seat belts, exercise, weight, water safety, wearing sunscreen, bike safety and a host of other topics that

It’s also a good time for parents to bring up any concerns, such as weight loss or gain, emotional changes and change in habits. Kanagal said, “Children love to see how much they’ve grown from the previous year. They love seeing that ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve grown 3 inches or I gained 15 pounds? Oh my lord!’ It’s nice for them to see that.” Kanagal is certified by the American

With one of the most extensive Indian menus in Scottsdale, Tandoori Times Indian Bistro features a range of entrees and flavors that will delight diehard Indian food fans and those who are just jumping into the joy of the cuisine. The interior of the restaurant is moderately lit and includes touches of art and décor from India, with a subtle overall modern flare. Be fairly warned that you may need five visits to Tandoori Times to get the fullest appreciation for its menu because there are so many different dishes. Everything from the sauces to a la carte items to the chai tea and authentic Indian desserts are dishes to be appreciated. We kicked off our dinner with the tandoori pesto naan ($2.95). We also opted for the a la carte aloo tikki ($6.95), a mild potato patty served with garbanzo beans, onions, mint and tamarind chutney. It was a side dish we’d never had before, and we liked that it was mild and slightly sweet. Entrees at Tandoori Times are typically prepared at a mid-range level of spice, but we were told by our server that any dish can be adjusted to the diner’s preference. Our group decided that we would go with just how the chef would normally prepare it and found that it worked for us. In a large skillet, heat olive oil on medium high heat. Slice corn from the husks and cook in olive oil until kernels become browned. (Caution, kernels can pop slightly.) Note: You can also grill corn on the husk until blackened, then slice off the kernels and add to skillet. Proceed to next step. Turn heat to high and to the corn add chillies, bell peppers, jicama, green onions and cumin, stirring constantly. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Pour mixture into serving bowl. Toss in cilantro, lemon or lime juice, garlic salt or sea salt and pepper. Serve warm or chilled.

perfect as a picnic salad or a tomatoless salsa for chip dipping. I stuck it on the “gotta make it now” pile and made it later in the day. This salad is really delicious because it has that fantastic southwestern flavor of grilled corn off the cob. The variety of hot chillies and bell peppers add a lot of flavor, and the hint of cumin brings it all together. I had never thought of grilling jicama before, but it was wonderful in this combination. Selina’s got the right idea with this dish being a great picnic or backyard barbecue salad because it transports and holds up well in the heat. In fact, it can be eaten warm right from the skillet or chilled.

You probably wouldn’t recognize my kitchen table on Sunday mornings. It’s pretty fun to look at, though. Old recipe boxes are stacked on top of each other. Mounds of heritage recipes that I’ve researched, collected and categorized fill the tabletop from corner to corner. Then the organizing begins. The pile that’s always the highest is the “gotta make it now” category. Because of your family stories and kitchen memories attached to these recipes, Sunday mornings for me have become rich and rewarding “play dates” that I relish. This week I reached through my paper trove to open the diary that I kept while on the road rescuing recipes a few years ago. Shepherd Celebrates His Blues Heritage by ‘Goin’ Home’ By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski

A completely self-taught guitarist, Kenny Wayne Shepherd honed his skills by listening to the best—Albert King, Bo Diddley, Junior Wells, Muddy Waters and others—as he grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana. This year, he and his band—vocalist Noah Hunt, drummer Chris Layton of Double Trouble, bassist Tony Franklin of The Firm and keyboardist Riley Osbourn of Willie Nelson’s collective— have paid homage to Shepherd’s heroes by releasing “Goin’ Home.” The album is a collection of cover tunes by his favorite artists. “It was fantastic,” Shepherd said via crackling cellphone about the recording process. “It’s probably one of the most fun times I’ve had making a record ever—not that other albums haven’t been fun. This one was extremely fun.” He said the pressure was off because he had a “roadmap” for the songs that he was recording, which were the original versions. “That kind of helped,” he said. “Everybody was pretty familiar with these songs going into it. We didn’t have to learn a bunch of parts and establish a bunch of parts. We could relax and do what we love to do and just play music and have fun.” “Goin’ Home” is also stacked with guests, including Ringo Starr, Robert Randolph, Kim Wilson, Joe Walsh, Warren Haynes, Keb’ Mo’ and Rebirth Brass Band. “We were surrounded by friends and family,” said Shepherd, who is married to and has children with Mel Gibson’s oldest daughter, Hannah. “I was in my hometown where my whole career began. This was us recording the soundtrack of my childhood, basically. All these artists and their music was the stuff I grew up listening to. It was a really good experience.” Finding the perfect songs could have been daunting, but Shepherd knew exactly what he wanted. “For the most part, I wanted to find songs that had good grooves and good lyrics,” not songs that were recorded “a million times before. The most mainstream song on the record was ‘Born under a Bad Sign.’ I almost didn’t

put that on there but Keb’ Mo’ did such a good job on it, I couldn’t not include it.” By digging deep into his favorite artists’ catalogs, he said he feels it will encourage fans to, too, explore the blues. “This makes it a little more interesting and encourages listeners to dig through these artists’ material and find some fantastic songs that lie beneath the surface,” he said. Shepherd will celebrate these musicians during an 8 p.m. Thursday, July 24, show at The Showroom at Talking Stick Resort. “Generally, all the reviews and the reaction to the new album have been overwhelmingly positive across the board, but you never know how it’s going to go over in a live concert,” said Shepherd, whose album debuted at No. 25 on The Billboard 200 album chart. “That’s especially when you have a catalog of music like we do that spans almost 20 years, and there’s a lot of radio songs that are singles that people expect to hear. Valley residents are realizing how much money they can save by using solar energy. Aneva Solar provides affordable solar systems to their clients while handling every facet of the process. “I’ve been a project manager for one of the major solar companies for about the last six years,” said Anthony Iannucci, Aneva Solar owner. “As of June ’13, I started this company with the focus to offer high-quality installations and directpurchase options because a lot of the big companies push leased solar systems right now. I mainly focus on direct-purchase solar systems that are priced cheaper than a lot of the leasing options.” Leased solar systems do not add value to a property because the components are owned by a third party. When a homeowner directly purchases a system, it adds value to a home and provides the quickest return on investment. “I meet with the customers, evaluate their energy usage and measure their roof,” Iannucci explained. “I try to get them to around a 90-percent offset to eliminate about 90 percent of their electric bill. If they move forward with the system, I take care of the permit process, HOA submittal, installing the system, having it inspected and finally commissioned by the utility company.” He said he handles the entire on the town
