Since being re-elected, Clark touts her success and continued good health as a main reason for announcing to run for re-election.

Nearly two years before the actual election, Yucca Councilmember Joyce Clark announced her plans for re-election after claiming in 2016 she would be a one-term candidate.

Clark defeated Samuel Chavira in the 2016 election to reclaim the Yucca District council seat.

“When I began serving in January of 2016, I assumed, incorrectly it appears, that after four years of service, my capabilities might diminish,” Clark said.

West Valley chambers unite with a voice in public policy

The West Valley Chambers of Commerce Alliance (WVCCA), composed of the six West Valley Chambers, has partnered with Fennemore Craig to represent the collective interests of businesses in the West Valley on public policy issues.

A crucial part of a Chamber of Commerce’s role in the business community is advocating for pro-business policies.

In 2019, to increase the Chambers are committed to enhanced effectiveness of advocacy for issues that impact West Valley businesses, the Chamber CEO’s and Fennemore Craig will be attending meetings with legislators and lobbying to champion the issues that are important to the West Valley. Letter to editor Take advantage of free driving programs for teens

The Winter Solstice last Friday brought the official start of Winter. That means for some people, leaving home and returning from work in darkness. The dark commutes coupled with a lack of sleep could be a recipe for disaster.

According to the CDC, drowsy driving is a major problem in the U.S., with an estimated one in 25 adult drivers (aged 18 years or older) admitting to having fallen asleep while driving in the previous 30 days. Additionally, research from the National Sleep Foundation shows remaining awake for periods in excess of 18 hours can impair abilities to a degree that is comparable to exceeding the BAC in many countries.

In an effort to educate and prevent drowsy driving, Ford Motor Company has commissioned the creation of a “Sleep Suit,” enabling wearers to experience the debilitating effect that exhaustion can have behind the wheel. Ford will be integrating training with the suit into Driving Skills for Life

(DSFL), a free training program for newly licensed teens (Phoenix schedule coming soon).

Driving accidents are the leading cause of death among young people and driving while exhausted is no different.

A combination of driving and sleepiness or fatigue, drowsy driving can have fatal consequences and usually occurs when a driver has not slept enough, but it also can happen due to untreated sleep disorders, medications, drinking alcohol, or shift work. Drowsy driving makes drivers less able to pay attention to the road, slows reaction time in the event a driver has to brake or steer suddenly, and affects a driver’s ability to make good decisions.

The holiday months create the highest demand for blood donations, and Vitalant has some of the lowest blood supplies of the year. To help support the life-sustaining needs of the community, the chamber is bringing Business Over Breakfast to the blood drive.

When asked why she announced nearly two years before the actual election, Clark was quick to point to the fund-raising needed for her campaign.

“I announced my candidacy for the Yucca District Council seat at this time to announce the intent to establish a Political Action Committee and to give notice to those who might be considering a run for the vacant Yucca District

council seat,” Clark said. “In early 2019, I will be establishing a PAC to begin fund-raising for the upcoming campaign.”

She added that her goals for another term included some intense issues she is focused on improving for citizens of the Yucca District, as well as Glendale.

“I plan on securing funding for the design of the lake feature in Heroes Park in our upcoming fiscal year 201920 budget and to secure funding for its construction in the following fiscal year 2020-21 budget,” Clark said. “After that, there are still the ball fields, recreation center and library expansion to complete and those are my goals.”

When giving blood means saving a life

Kshama Chandan gave blood for the first time Dec. 18 at the Vitalant (formerly United Blood Services) location on 59th Avenue and Union Hill Drive in Glendale.

Although there’s a first time for every blood donor, in Chandan’s case, her blood could mean the difference between life and death for 2-year-old Zainab in Florida.

The mother of a baby daughter who turned 1 year old Dec. 22, Chandan is especially hopeful her own blood could possibly help Zainab win her battle against an aggressive form of cancer.

Zainab’s blood is missing a common antigen — called “Indian B” (Inb) — the majority of people have in their red blood cells. A matching donor would need to be missing their Inb antigen and have blood type O or A. According to Vitalant, statistically

the only people who are likely to be a match are exlusively of Iranian, Indian or Pakistani descent. Even among those

groups, only 4 percent are missing the Inb antigen. Zainab’s parents are not compatible.

Vitalant spokesperson Sue Thew said a worldwide search found three people who could match Zainab’s blood. She needs at least seven donors because she will require ongoing blood transfusions for an undetermined amount of time.

Chandan, who is 100 percent a descent from India, has a 4 percent chance of being a match. Still, she has rare blood herself. It was discovered when she gave birth to her daughter a year ago.

She has Bombay blood, an extremely rare red cell phenotype. Only about one in four million people have the Bombay phentoype, which is missing the H antigen. If Chandan ever needs a lifesaving transfusion, that is what she would need.

Thew said the rare blood inventory in Vitalant’s Scottsdale lab contains just 300 units. If Chandan’s blood is not compatible with Zainab’s, it would be see

That was comforting to Chandan, who said, “I just hope when they test it, it’s compatible.”

When asked what she would say to Zainab if she could look into her eyes, Chandan said she would say, “Enjoy your life. Don’t think about what’s going on.”

Chandan said since she learned about Zainab’s rare blood, she has felt a connection. That was just about 10 days before she made the call to Vitalant to set an appointment to donate and have her blood tested.

She learned about Zainab through a friend, who had seen the flier on Vitalant’s website. Although she did not like the thought of needles, Chandan said she went through the procedure because she felt that connection to Zainab. Her own daughter, Meera, is fortunate to have the same blood type as her father, Akshay Ravindran, B positive. He donates platelets on a regular basis.

“I’m hoping if it doesn’t match, hopefully, it will help someone with my type of blood, maybe save their life,” she said.

Testing won’t take long. In the mean-

time, Chandan and Ravindran had a birthday party last weekend to celebrate Meera’s first birthday. The couple has been in the Valley four years and Chandan said they invited quite a few people to celebrate the occasion.

Chandan was hoping it would turn into a life-saving celebration as well.

Christmas Day

Hospitals across Arizona are looking for blood donors to help ensure their patients have an ample supply this holiday season. While all blood types are desired, Vitalant has an urgent need for donors with O-negative, the universal blood that can be substituted for all other types in emergencies.

2018 — Year in Review

As another year comes to a close, it is time to look back at the top 10 stories of 2018 that were most influential, controversial and discussed for the city of Glendale.

The year began with the council selecting a new vice mayor and other new administrators within the city and ended with questions about back taxes with local businesses. In between, citizens were met with numerous stories that created much discussion among city staff and councilmembers.

As we close 2018 and look forward to 2019, here are the top 10 stories as selected by The Glendale Star that made the most noise and controversy during the past 12 months.

get our old campus. We get a parcel of the same value with more acreage and the neighbors get what they want, which is education, on the land.”

ACU will take over the 68-acre campus of the former Thunderbird school and bring in its current 800 students and 200 faculty in August next year.

Munsil said ACU has been evaluating options for a new campus that would provide its students and faculty with improved academic and sports facilities and additional space for classrooms and on-campus housing.

“It is nine miles from our current campus in a tremendous community and for us give us the opportunity to grow,” Munsil said. “With our growing athletics and performing arts programs, we now have the chance to continue to grow both of them.”

He added that the current ACU campus, as well as dorms, has been at capacity for two years as the school continues to be one of the top colleges in the U.S. News and World Report annual rankings.

“We have been thrilled to be recognized as a ‘Best College’ by U.S. News & World Report for two consecutive years,” Munsil said. “It has been a great indicator that we are building a national reputation for excellence.”

ACU is ranked among the Best Regional Colleges in the West, and is the only ranked Arizona school in this category. The category covers colleges and universities from 15 western states, including California, Texas, Oklahoma, Washington and Oregon. Schools were ranked according to their performance across a set of widely accepted indicators of excellence. Of Arizona’s 14 universities, for the second straight year, ACU achieved the highest ranking in its category of any university in the state.

The school has plans to add athletic fields to the campus and begin playing all sports on campus beginning in the fall 2019.

REVIEW FROM 6 While students across the country protest, demanding change in the wake of the Feb. 14 school shooting in Parkland, Fla., the city of Glendale wasted no time implementing a plan to make its high school campuses safer.

In a March 23 press conference, officials announced all nine schools within the city’s boundaries would have school resource officers beginning March 26. Before then, only four of the nine schools in the city had SROs. That’s quick turnaround for local city government,” Glendale Police Chief Rick St. John said. “To redeploy resources that quickly takes the support of mayor and council, city management, officers within the police department; it’s everyone getting involved saying this is important, something we need to do.”

Soon after the shooting in Parkland that took 17 lives, Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps approached St. John, asking what kind of plan could be put together and implemented immediately, St. John said.

“Didn’t take me long to think about it, because I know the value of a school resource officer program and what they bring to our education facilities,” St. John said.

Since Feb. 14, about 1,200 incidents and threats have been reported in U.S. schools, St. John said, adding more than a dozen came from Arizona.

“I can tell you here in Glendale, I believe that number is closer to a dozen just for our city alone on our high school campuses,” he said. “We’re seeing an unprecedented number of threats and incidents that have begun to occur, and they all seem to be linked to what happened in Parkland, Fla. This is having a very real impact on all of us in our nation, in the state of Arizona and of course, in the city of Glendale.”

Ocotillo District Councilmember Jamie Aldama was the only councilmember not present during the city’s recent announcement that it was placing school resource officers (SRO) at all nine high schools within city limits.

While he believes the city’s move to add dedicated SROs to the five schools that did not currently have them was a positive move, he also wondered if it should focus on being correct and not

Aldama released a statement three days after the March 23 press conference, in which he stated, “Prior to the announcement of such an impactful edict, each and every school district superintendent representing a school within Glendale city limits, as well as our principals and teachers, should have been consulted and brought into the public discussion. But they WERE NOT afforded this opportunity. All our local school board officials at every level,

including public charter school officials, should have been provided the opportunity to weigh in. THEY WERE NOT. Other critical stakeholders, including the Police and Fire Associations, were TOLD of the adverse impact on their memberships, but not consulted with.”

Aldama, who had five of the seven councilmembers actively campaigning against him, thanked voters for his overwhelming victory.

“As I have said before, to each his own (in their support), but when there are five current councilmembers supporting a new candidate, it says to me that there is a will to remove democracy and add a dictatorship, and that is not how we function,” Aldama said. “I don’t see any reason why five would want me out, but I don’t answer to the five. I answer to my constituents in my district.”

Turner totaled 2,527 votes (63 percent) to Ray Strahl’s 1,485 (37 percent) out of the 3,459 votes cast in the Barrel District.

4. Glendale earns return of Super Bowl (2023) and Final Four (2024) Glendale continued to shine when it comes to major events as State Farm Stadium was rewarded with the return of the Super Bowl in 2023 and the Final Four in 2024.

National Football League owners voted unanimously May 23 to award the 57th Super Bowl to the University of Phoenix Stadium in 2023. “(It goes) without saying we are thrilled and grateful for the leadership that includes Arizona Cardinals President Michael Bidwill, Gov. Doug Ducey and Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee Chairman David Rousseau for getting this event approved for Glendale,” Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps said.

The 57th Super Bowl will be the fourth one played in Arizona and third in the past 15 years at University of Phoenix Stadium. Glendale hosted the 49th Super Bowl in 2015 and the 42nd Super Bowl in 2008. The 30th Super Bowl (1996) was held at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe.

“We are very grateful that the NFL and its owners have once again selected Arizona to host the pre-eminent event in sports,” David Rousseau said in a written statement. “It is a testament to the stellar reputation that our community has earned for staging world-class events, and there are none bigger than the Super Bowl. “Westgate’s revitalization required iStar’s full suite of real estate expertise and problem-solving capabilities,” said David Sotolov, iStar executive vice president. “With nearly $500 million of additional investments in the Southwest, we remain active lenders, investors and partners to the most sophisticated real estate investors in the region.”

The sale happened rather quickly, according to YAM Properties Vice President of Communications Curtis Steinhoff.

“The property was placed on the market in April, and we closed on June 12,” Steinhoff said.

6. City extends Gila River Arena management contract with AEG After more than two years running the city owned Gila River Arena, AEG was awarded a five-year extension to continue operating the home of the Arizona Coyotes.

The city and AEG agreed to an extension until June 30, 2026.

“I think this is something you don’t see a lot of in markets, to have a vote of confidence from a city like this,” Gila River Arena general manager Dale Adams said. “We strive for this arena to be a place where people want to come and see great events because this has been a hidden gem in Arizona for too long.”

Based in Los Angeles, AEG owns, operates or consults with more than 120 venues worldwide, including Staples Center in Los Angeles. AEG also developed L.A. Live, the sports and entertainment district adjacent to Staples Center, Microsoft Theater and the Los Angeles Convention Center. It also runs The O2, a 28-acre development in London that includes a 20,000-seat arena.

Adams was quick to point out that the success AEG has had is because of the location and venue.

AEG has been successful over the past two years with events such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Sugarland, UFC, Lorde, Katy Perry and Brad Paisley, among other programming, such as ACE Comic Con and the Professional Bull Riding Association.

“The ultimate goal is to get as much exposure to show people how great this area and arena is,” Adams said.

“Our goals are to always increase the programming and work with the Coyotes and support them as they move forward and hopefully continue to build and get this building the exposure it deserves.”

Glendale selected AEG to be the manager in February 2016 when three requests for proposals were submitted after the city voided a long-term contract with IceArizona in 2015.

7. City makes major cuts to annual special events budget After two years of work trying to ensure the success of the downtown area with a major plan for changing the economic vision for the area, which included the possible elimination of the city’s major holiday events, City Manager Kevin Phelps announced his recommendation for the future of those events.

“We will continue to propose funding for the events, but we will not be increasing our funding level,” Phelps said. “We will not make any changes and we expect the 2019-20 events season to look the same as the 2018-19 season.”

In a letter sent to Glendale City Council Nov. 2, Phelps pointed out that part of his job has been working on improving the success of business in the downtown area and trying to bring

visitors downtown.

“While we have made significant progress on many of the council’s initial priorities, there is still much to be done,” Phelps said in the memo. “In June, I informed council that I was preparing to roll out a new economic development strategy focused on energizing our struggling downtown.”

The major idea presented in early March was to rebuild and refurbish the E. Lowell Rogers Amphitheater in Murphy Park and hold events year-round to drive people to the area.

The downtown area under discussion is bordered by Myrtle Avenue on the north, Grand Avenue on the south, 59th Avenue on the west and 55th Avenue on the east.

“The city budgets approximately $1 million per year to support the downtown area,” Phelps said. “This includes the special events, such as Glendale Glitters, Glitter and Glow and the Chocolate Affaire, as well as the downtown manager and increased security and street sweeping.”

In return for the money spent downtown, the city collects an estimated annual gross sales tax of $403,000, which is 0.003 percent of the total collected by the city. Nearly $60,000 of the $403,000 comes during special events.

He said his original idea was to focus the downtown Glendale area on “Experiential Retail,” which refers to a retail or restaurant location in which customers can have an experience with shopping, including upscale restaurants and bars.

He said part of the plan staff researched was the possibility of relocating the Velma Teague Library from its current location in Murphy Park to the old Bead Museum down the street.

“Staff had researched moving the Velma Teague Library to the old Bead Museum and making it a larger and more up-to-date library,” Phelps said.

“Then we would try and attract one or more restaurant or bar type retailers to open right in Murphy Park.”

In comparison, the city invested $10,000 in the Westgate Entertainment District, which was for the fireworks during the Fourth of July event, and spent nothing at Arrowhead Towne Center.

In return, Arrowhead Towne Center contributed 13 percent of the city’s total annual sales tax and Westgate contributed 10 percent.

Phelps said the ultimate goal of driving people and potential business to the downtown area is a huge priority for council and city staff, but the city also wants merchants to work toward assisting with those plans.

During an interview earlier this year, Phelps pointed to changing the entire focus of special events from four to five mega events to 100 to 150 events year round.

“Staff and I had been looking at this and wanted to roll out a new strategic development that, under ideal perfect conditions, would still be a challenge,” Phelps said. “We are not the only city in the country having challenges with their downtown area; even shopping centers are stressing because brick and mortar businesses are changing around the country.”

8. City sells former St. Vincent de Paul building for $25,000 Nearly 10 years after purchasing the old St. Vincent de Paul building at 7018 N. 57th Ave., and more than three years of standing empty, the city approved the sale of the structure, but not without numerous questions from councilmembers.

Glendale, which purchased the building in October 2008 for $735,000 from St. Vincent de Paul Diocese of Phoenix, approved a sale to C+D LLC as is for $25,000 with the caveat that the new owner pay nearly $500,000 for any and all improvements to the building.

“The purchase price was determined by the offer made by C+D in their letter of intent to the city,” Director of Economic Development Brian Friedman said. “This was after C+D evaluated the condition of the building and conducted their own market analysis to determine the amount of capital investment that would be required if they purchased the building in an as-is condition.”

The building has been empty since June 2015, when St. Vincent de Paul closed its thrift store.

“C+D LLC, in June 2018, submitted a letter of intent to purchase the property as is for $25,000 and enter into a separate agreement to make all required improvements to the property,” Friedman said. “There were significant findings, including uninhabitable condition to the 7,000-square-foot structure and the building requires significant investment see

Vice Mayor Lauren Tolmachoff questioned the estimated value of the property.

“It was a net value of $35,000 for the raw land and the nearest comparable properties in the surrounding area were zoned C-3 and C-O and the average vacant land cost was $10 per square foot.” Freidman said. “To demolish the building and sell raw land, the city would have had to invest approximately $35,000. Even if this land, after demolition, could have been sold at $10 per square foot, the city’s net after demolition would be $35,000 and would leave another vacant, non-revenue generating parcel in downtown with a significant cost associated with new build.”

“I read an article about downtown Glendale and the hiring of (Downtown Manager Katy) Engels and the commitment the council here was promoting the area,” Chase Albright said. “We figured if we were going to invest our significant savings, we thought where can we not just be a number and I realized Glendale was it.”

To receive a certificate of occupancy, the Albrights must improve the building within 180 days following the close of escrow, with two extensions of 45 days and 20 days at the discretion of the city.

“The major renovations that must take place, considering the current state of the building, include but are not limited to: heating, cooling, plumbing, roofing, electrical and a fire suppression system. We won’t know what the full extent will be beyond the items mentioned above until development plans are submitted,” Friedman said.

“The city estimates that it could cost $500,000 or more to bring the building into compliance and receive a certificate of occupancy.”

Barrel District Councilmember Bart Turner asked why the deal was coming to a vote when the city recently said the building was not for sale.

“I am sure the applicant is fine and I admire their commitment to Glendale, but I have concerns about the process,” Turner said. “In (2014 and 2015), council considered this property along with others and whether they wanted to put it

up for sale and council decided then they did not want to sell this property.”

Turner questioned if the sale was done the right way.

“I have not missed a council meeting and there has been no change in this property and that tells the community that this property was not for sale. I have concerns that this has not been transparent,” Turner said. “So, those paying attention haven’t had the chance to make an offer and I believe we owe it to citizens to allow them to get all the offers that may be out there, whether it is cash or this deal; we owe citizens the chance to present all offers and determine which ones are the best ones for taxpayers.”

Local residents also questioned the purchase price after the city bought the building for three-quarters of a million dollars.

“I was shocked after seeing this item on the agenda, Cheryl Kappes, owner of Country Maiden, said. “If there are more buildings for sale in the city at this price, I would love to go buy some so I can make money. I would appreciate you postpone the vote and let this building be offered publicly for sale because you do not know what you could get for it unless you ask.”

Council did not delay the vote and the sale was approved 6-1, with Turner the only councilmember voting against the sale.

9. IKEA cancels proposed Glendale store Glendale city officials were dealt a blow to economic development May 25 when IKEA announced it was backing out of its planned store near State Farm Stadium.

a final decision on the future of Glen Lakes Golf Course during its Nov. 27 workshop, which had the course re-open Dec. 1, as staff begins researching the possible sale of the land.

Councilmembers are expected to vote at their Dec. 11 meeting to issue a 90-day notice to cancel the city’s contract with the course manager, Golf Maintenance Solutions 5W LLC (GMS).

The course re-opened at 7 a.m. Dec. 1 out of interim facilities. The course will be available for play from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

GMS was awarded a $429,500 management contract in July to manage the course through June 30, 2019, but council can cancel the contract with a 90-day written notice.

The 52-year-old course at 5450 W. Northern Ave. sits on 44.6 acres of cityowned land. The nine-hole, executivelength golf course opened in 1966 and is a Par 33, totaling 2,403 yards. The city initially purchased the course for $1.1 million in 1979 and has operated it through a series of qualified golf course management firms since then.

A handful of residents were present with signs saying, “Save Glen Lakes,” and “Kiss Your Grass Goodbye” among other statements in support of saving the course.

During a workshop presentation, staff started with original estimates for capital investment needed to restore the course at between $5.1 million to $7.6 million.

“That original estimate was what is needed for design costs, demolition and construction of a clubhouse, pro shop, maintenance facility, course restroom, irrigation systems and other needs at the course,” Field Operations Director Michelle Woytenko said.

“After staff redesigned a smaller clubhouse, repairing the current restroom and golf cart storage with no kitchen or food service, the new number is $1.525 million.”

Original estimates on capital investment that would be required by the city to get the course up to standards include $2.125 to $2.975 million for design and construction of a new pro shop and clubhouse, $800,000 to replace the irrigation system, and

$750,000 for a new maintenance facility among the highest costs.

Staff worked to improve the estimates, and reduced the size of the clubhouse down to 4,000 square feet and a tent to cover the maintenance areas instead of a building.

“We got more information from GMS about capital investment needs for the course and the estimates are for design costs, construction of pro shop and clubhouse, maintenance facility, course restroom, irrigation systems and other needs at the course,” Woytenko said. “We looked at assuming just a 4,000-square-foot clubhouse and pro shop with no food kitchen or food service and the new number is $1.525 million for the clubhouse.”

Within the new estimates of $2.125 to $2.975 million costs, Woytenko said there was large wiggle room when it comes to the costs.

“A third of the total is the clubhouse and pro shop and I am not very comfortable with the $1.5 million estimate,” Woytenko said. “I think those numbers may be a little low and if we move forward with these numbers, we may have to come back for more funding in the future.”

Also, if council had agreed to continue to run the golf course, Assistant City Manager Tom Duensing said the city would have to borrow funds for the project.

“If the course was to remain, the city would have to find the money, which would add to the debt service,” Duensing said. “If we financed the project, we would have to recoup $550,819 to $274,664 in user fees from the course based on the estimates.”

Hotshots prepare for launch of Alliance of American Football League

As a new spring football league prepares for launch, theArizona team in theAlliance of American Football League (AAF) — known as the Arizona Hotshots — held its inaugural media day Dec. 17 at the new Arizona Christian University campus in Glendale.

“We are very excited and it is kind of a homecoming for me,” Hotshots head coach and former Tempe McClintock graduate Rick Neuheiselm said. “I grew up here and my mom and dad have already promised 4,000 tickets to friends and family members.”

The AAF, announced in March 2018, is the brainchild of filmmaker Charlie Ebersol.

The AAF will be overseen by former National Football League general manager Bill Polian. Former NFL players Troy Polamalu, Hines Ward, Justin Tuck, and Mike Singletary are part of the league.

The league consists of eight teams in Phoenix,Atlanta, Birmingham (Ala.), Memphis, Orlando, Salt Lake City, San Antonio and San Diego.

“There is a massive amount of people in this country who watch only one sport on television and that league only plays a set period of time,” Ebersol said in March. “They stop watching sports on TV the day after the Super Bowl and don’t come back until the NFL returns.”

The league is using a business plan that relies on cost controls among players (all will sign three-year deals with annual salaries of $70,000, $80,000 and $100,000) and fans (Ebersol says a family of four should be able to go attend games for $220) for stability.

The league is also using rules that include no kickoffs, shorter play clocks and fewer commercial breaks which league officials hope means games will take a total of twoand-a-half hours to complete.

Ebersol added that, most importantly, all teams will be league-owned, meaning there will be no billionaire owners trying to control everything. While players will have set salaries, they can make more based on fan engagement (and fan betting) and are free to leave at any time if they receive NFL opportunities.

“We built our model based on a five- to seven-year plan,” Ebersol said. “The leagues that failed previously were banking on massive fan audiences’ opening night. We’re not looking to put up crazy television or attendance numbers overnight. We want to build slow and steady and be a long-term business

over the years.”

The AAF will begin its inaugural, 10week season on Feb. 9, 2019, and the Hotshots begin Feb. 10 when they host the Salt Lake Stallions. The league is split into two conferences, Eastern and Western, with a four-team playoff to end with a championship game to be held in Las Vegas in late April.

The Hotshots play in the Western Conference along with the Salt Lake Stallions, San Antonio Commanders and San Diego Fleet.

The Eastern Conference consists of the Atlanta Legends, Birmingham Iron, Memphis Express and Orlando Apollos.

Neuheisel, who was announced as the head coach of theArizona team in May 2018, and the teams announced the name Hotshots in September as a tribute to the region’s firefighters. The team colors of green, orange and yellow were also selected because they are commonly worn by the fire crews.

Twelve players have local ties: former Northern Arizona defensive tackle Siupeli Anau, Arizona State defensive lineman Will Sutton, linebackers Carl Bradford and D.J. Calhoun and wide receiver Devin Lucien, along with University ofArizona tackle Lene Maiava and linebacker Scooby Wright.

“Right now, we are all teammates, but I do give some of the Arizona players some hard

times, because that is what we do — it’s in our blood,” Sutton said during media day.

“Our main thing is we want to go out and win gamesand the main thing we want to do is get this rolling.”

The Hotshots will play home games at Arizona State University Sun Devil Stadium.

Sutton was quick to point to the home grown talent and the chance to play again at ASU Sun Devil Stadium.

“This makes ASU fans exited for this because we get to play in front of them and my social media has been blowing up,” Sutton said. “All us ASU guys are excited to play at Sun Devil Stadium again.”

Most of the players said they are excited because they get to further their football career after either just missing in the NFL. “This is great because we get the opportunity to play here,” former ASU defensive back Robert Nelson said. “What is the point of the NFL tag if you don’t get to play? This is a great opportunity to have fun and play and I want to play and show everyone I am the best and help my team be the best.”

Hotshots president Scott Brubaker said the goal is to put a winning team on the field

and build an organization that is strong both on and off the field.

“It is pop culture now in sports to talk about process, but we are all very much about process,” Brubaker said. “We put a good process in place on the field, off the field and in the community, which has a strong marketing, strong business relationship and good community. If we can do that, the results will come.”

Neuheisel added that he believes the league can be successful based on the demand for the game and if they can be a strong team.

“Sunday afternoon in February, March or April in Sun Devil Stadium, where would you rather be?” Neuheisel said. “Especially if the environment as I am promised by all the people working in the organization will be fan friendly, fan exciting and, hopefully, the play will match that.”

The Hotshots have been training in Surprise in preparation for the season but are focused on building their brand statewide.

“We are focused on a community-wide growth and we want everyone to have fun during our games,” Brubaker said.

Sports year in review 2018

As another year comes to a close, local sports showed the end of junior college football in Arizona, local high school athletes’ and other major successes on and off the fields.

A local Glendale high school graduate shined on the national stage, another was picked in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft and Unified Sports shone in West Valley high schools during the year.

As we close 2018 and look forward to 2019, here are the top 10 stories, as selected

by The Glendale Star of sports news over the past 12 months.

1. Junior College football ends in Arizona

After announcing in October 2017 that the Maricopa County Community College District would not cut football at the four remaining schools that still play the sport, it was announced Feb. 5 that 2018 would be the final season of football at those schools.

“A difficult decision has been reached regarding the MCCCD football program; we will eliminate football following the upcoming 2018 season as a MCCCD sponsored sport,” said Glendale Community College President Teresa Leyba Ruiz, Ed.D in an email obtained by The Glendale Star.

After a firestorm of controversy and discussion about the possible elimination of football erupted late last year, the Maricopa County Community College District Board

of Governors announced in October it had decided against eliminating the sport.

They then said the decision would “be reevaluated again in 2019, as the district continues to try and cut expenses at local colleges.”

“We want to make sure we are putting the resources that taxpayers entrust us with to good use across the entire system,” said Matt Hasson, MCCCD director of communication. “(Football players) are in and out of the schools and are not there for education and when you spend the money we spend, we want to focus on the collective community.”

In a release from MCCCD, they pointed to the fact that, “football programs make up 20 percent of the total MCCCD athletic budget and is responsible for more than 50 percent of related insurance costs. Ongoing costs to maintain the football programs could exceed $20 million in needed capital improvements and associated expenses.”

Later in the year, Pima, Eastern Arizona and Western Arizona all eliminated their programs as football at the junior college level ended at the conclusion of the season.

2. Ironwood graduate wins first two UFC bouts

MacKenzie Dern had been the most sought after free agent in the world of combat sports for the past few years, but wasn’t sure she wanted any part of it before the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) came calling.

“I really didn’t want to get hit in the face,” Dern said, during a sit-down interview at

MacKenzie Dern, a 2010 graduate of Ironwood High School, won her first two matches after debuting for the UFC in 2018.

The MMA Lab. She is a multi-time world champion in Jiu-Jitsu, having been ranked No. 1 in the world by the International Brazilian JiuJitsu Federation in 2017, having won 12 world titles and 18 medals (9 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze) from 2014 to 2016.

Dern defeated Ashley Yoder March 2 in her long-awaited debut via split decision before earning her second UFC victory May 12 via a rear-naked choke in the first round over Amanda Cooper.

Members of the UFC knew they wanted Dern, but it was a chance encounter that got her to become an actual fighter.

“I was competing in a Jiu-Jitsu tournament, where a UFC expo was, and I took a picture with Shawn Shelby’s (UFC matchmaker) daughter, who was also competing,” Dern said. “He asked me if I had ever thought about MMA and I actually told him I had more to accomplish in the world

of Jiu-Jitsu.”

Dern said she started training with The MMA Lab in Glendale to improve her JiuJitsu and got a feel for the exciting sport.

3. Liberatore selected No. 16 by Tampa Bay Rays

After being projected as one of the top high school prospects in the 2018 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft, and expected to go anywhere from the top of the draft to No. 10, Mountain Ridge pitcher Matthew Liberatore had to wait a little longer than expected.

But, Liberatore was excited when his name was called at No. 16 and he found out he had been chosen by the Tampa Bay Rays. He had said earlier he came into the draft with no expectations and showed that after the pick was announced. see

And now for the happy new year I hope you’ve had a Merry Christmas, and now for the happy new year. New years are resets, turning the page. That was the year that was, it’s over, let it go. This is much easier said than done. But there is power in starting fresh with a new perspective and a new beginning.

Here’s a post I read on Facebook. Consider it carefully and prayerfully.

“I’m walking into 2019 with a clear heart and mind. If you owe me, don’t worry about it – you’re welcome. If you’ve wronged me, it’s all good – lesson learned. If you’re angry with me, you won – I’ve let it go. If we aren’t speaking – it’s cool – I wish you well. If I’ve wronged you, I apologize – it wasn’t intentional. I’m grateful for every experience that I received.

Life is too short for pent-up anger, holding of grudges and all the

extra stress or pain that comes with holding on to what is holding me back and you back. Remember, forgiving someone is for you, not the other person. Don’t block your blessing. Make 2019 a year of positivity by forgiveness and getting things right where you can.”

You might be thinking, “Who is this person? Who could do all this stuff? This isn’t real. People don’t do this.”

Believe it or not, there are people who have done one, two or even all the New Year’s proposals presented. You don’t find this very often. It’s upside down. It’s counter cultural. It’s the high road. It’s the opposite of getting even. It’s opposite of playing the victim. It’s mercy triumphing over judgment.

It’s “The Beatitudes” in the Bible expressed by a real person in what has happened in their life to and from others.

It is so sad when you have a young person in front of you who has let his or her newfound freedom mess up their lives. I had a young lady in front of me that had been a straight A student and was a freshman at Arizona State University.

Because of drugs and alcohol, she had been arrested for a D.U.I. and thrown out of school.

I fined her $2,500, 10 days in jail and suspended her driving privileges. Her mother said they would no longer pay for the girl’s education. Getting a job now will be difficult with no driver’s license, and no education. So sad.

As we approach the New Year of 2019, it is time to make our New Year’s

The New Year -2019 resolutions. I have listed 10 News Year’s resolutions I am sure will help keep you out of court. They might even save your family, your health or maybe your life.

I know they will make life a lot more enjoyable and meaningful. You might notice they bear a strong resemblance to the Ten Commandments.

1. Don’t take or sell drugs. They are addictive and before long it controls you. Drugs become your God. 2. Don’t let drugs, money or possessions become so important in your life that you will cheat and steal to get them.

3. Don’t curse and use four-letter words. It leads to fights and all sorts of bad problems.

4. Take the first day of each week to reflect on what you are doing with your life. People who have no goals or purposes in their life usually have problems.

5. Young people, listen to your parents and do what they say. That would go a long way in keeping you out of trouble.

6. Respect life. Don’t kill each other.

People should not shoot, knife, or beat each other up. Keep your temper under control.

7. Men, don’t play around with another man’s wife. That causes a lot of domestic violence and assault cases.

Divorces are expensive.

8. Don’t take something that does not belong to you.

9. Don’t lie, tell the truth.

10. If it belongs to someone else, leave it alone. Wanting what belongs to someone else causes you a lot of problems.

Lesson : 2,000 years ago, laws very similar to the above were given to the people of Israel and it is still good advice today.

regardless; the good and bad, the nice and nasty. If all you do is love the lovable, do you expect a bonus? Anybody can do that. If you simply say hello to those who greet you, do you expect a medal? Any run-of-the-mill sinner does that.

What I’m saying is, grow up.

You’re kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and

graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.

How can you have a better New Year this year? The answer might be right in the “crazy” person’s proclamation. Pick a sentence in the proclamation you know you should do and do it. You will need to tap into God’s power to do this.

That will turn your “should” into a “can.” Set yourself free from who

you are upset with or what you are upset with. Grow up and go on.

Build a bridge and get over it.

4. Mountain Ridge falls short of first baseball title

After a season that led the Mountain Ridge baseball team to its second state title game in the past three years, the Mountain Lions were in line to win the school’s first baseball title May 15 at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

Unfortunately, the Mountain Lions were unable to throw their ace pitcher on the mound and Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor took advantage in cruising to a 7-1 victory to claim the 6A state title before a crowd of 4,286.

Tied at one entering the fourth inning, the Eagles broke the game open when O’Connor sophomore Colton Kucera reached on an infield single and stole second. Kucera moved to third on a wild pitch before Dyer loaded the bases with back-to-back hit batters.

Junior Zach Martinez grounded out, bringing in one run, before Noah Burgarello singled in two runs to put the Eagles up 4-1.

The victory ended a highlight season for the Mountain Lions, who entered the season with high hopes but came up one game short in their quest for the school’s first title as Skaugrud was dominant.

Mountain Ridge (21-11-1) struggled on offense. Entering the game averaging more than five runs a game, they could only get one across against Skaugrud.

5. Independence wins first Unified Sports badminton championship

Two Glendale Union High School District Unified Sports teams shined during the Unified Sports Badminton State Championship as Independence defeated Glendale in the championship match Oct. 21.

Hundreds of spectators packed the Independence gym and cheered from the opening introductions to every point.

The band played during timeouts and numerous cheerleaders cheered like it was every other sporting event.

“The competition was great and most matches had very close scores,” Independence head coach Jennifer Perry said. “The sportsmanship was impressive and there was an incredibly positive vibe throughout the day.”

Coaches were excited about the match and the fact that games were competitive.

“Both teams played incredibly well and displayed the highest level of sportsmanship,” Perry said. “It was so exciting to know that our district was going to have a championship regardless of which school won the final match.”

6. UFC makes debut at Gila River Arena

Arizona native Justin Gaethje won two high school state titles at Gila River Arena, and on April 14 he returned to the arena to fight in an Ultimate Fighting Championship main event in front of a packed house at the arena for the first time since 2007.

Gaethje, who entered the fight ranked No. 6 in the UFC lightweight division, pounded and battled No. 5-ranked Dustin Poirier in front of more than 12,000 standing fans inside the arena before losing by technical knockout in the fourth round.

“I know the fans booed me, but we left it all out here in the octagon for everyone. Justin is a warrior and wouldn’t have stopped unless (referee Herb) Dean stepped in like he

did,” Poirier said to the crowd after the bout.

“I’ve been through two weight classes, this is my 20th fight in the UFC. I know what it’s like to battle through adversity, get knocked down, get knocked out and stand back up.

I would never ask for something unless I knew I earned it.”

7. Apollo coach receives Educator of the Year award

and basketball coach at Apollo High School, was recognized as the Matt O. Hanhila Educator of the Year. Apollo Principal Brooke Parsons introduced Prado-Ortiz at the Glendale Rotary Club luncheon May 17.

Her comments drew applause once she read Prado-Ortiz’s professional biography.

“Coach Prado is a product of the Glendale Union High School District,” Parsons said. “She attended Glendale High School her freshman year and then graduated from Independence. Sue attended Glendale Community College, where she played basketball for a year and finished her degree at Arizona State University.”

8. Glendale high school football makes playoffs for first time in 12 years

Glendale ended the season 9-2, while Sahuaro (9-2) advanced to the quarterfinals and hosted No. 13 Seton Catholic Prep (83) 7 p.m. Nov. 10 at Tucson Sahuaro High School.

The Cardinals ended their best season since the 1980 team finished 10-0, winning nine games and qualifying for the playoffs for the first time since 2006.

9. Cactus softball falls in title game

In the Cobras’ 2016 title game, a nonhome run call cost them, and in 2018, a safe call at first base led to two Tucson Salpointe Catholic runs that were the difference; Cactus (30-5) lost 2-0 in the 4A title game at Arizona State University Farrington Field May 15.

Cactus starting pitcher freshman McKenna Feringa was dominant and through five innings had only allowed two infield singles after retiring the first 10 Lancers while striking out five.

Then, in the fifth, controversy ensued when Salpointe Catholic’s Alyssa Ortiz dropped a bunt that Cactus third baseman Aubrey Chavez fielded and fired to first for what appeared to be the first out of the inning, but the umpire called her safe.

10. Deer Valley graduate shines at Colorado Mesa University

Deer Valley graduate Taylor Woods was one of the most underrated volleyball players in the West Valley and wanted a challenge when she made her college decision in 2015.

After struggling through the recruitment process, the school she selected has made her a better person as well as volleyball player, she said.

“I hated the recruiting process because it was so difficult and pulls on your emotions and I struggled with my confidence,” Woods said during a phone interview. “I did not get a lot of offers, but I believe I made the right decision.”

She elected to continue her education and career at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colo., a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II school.

“I know CMU was where I needed to come,” Woods said. “I really think this is the perfect place for me, and being a Division II school, I could not imagine myself at a Division I school and I love the way the public supports us at CMU.”
