Scottsdale Grammy Winner Roars With ‘Tiger’ For Grammy Award winner April Stevens, penning her book “Teach Me Tiger” was a true labor of love. Stevens, who along with brother Nino Tempo earned the 1964 Best Rock ‘n’ Roll Recording prize for “Deep Purple,” admitted she cried while writing “Teach Me Tiger.” “There was still a lot of crying going on,” she said. “I got lost sometimes and I had to stop. I had a little ankle surgery. I thought, ‘Well, great. I’ll be able to work and just finish it.’ I didn’t even want to look at it. When you’re in pain and your body is trying to get well, you just can’t do anything like that.” April Stevens was born Carol LoTempio in Niagara Falls, N.Y., in 1929. Blessed with a beautiful voice, she found success in the 1950s through 1970s, recording for a number of labels, including RCA Victor. The book “Teach Me Tiger” tells the story of her career and her life between 1950 and the present. It is named after her sexually suggestive 1959 hit, which peaked at No. 86 on the Hot 100 chart. “I remembered so much that I didn’t expect to remember,” said Stevens, who is married to Bill Perman. “I thought, ‘How will I remember every incident?’ But one incident reminded me of the next incident.” One of those incidents is her and her brother’s Grammy win. Stevens keeps the award on her mantle in her Scottsdale home and is contemplating taking it with her on book-signing events. “We never expected to win,” she said. “I had my mouth full of food. I was chomping away. I couldn’t believe it.” She and Tempo didn’t invite friends or family because, frankly, classifieds

they thought a win wasn’t possible. Their parents, however, had been very supportive. “They left their hometown and all their families just to come out to California in the ‘40s,” she said. “I was just about 11 or 12 and Nino was about 6. It turned out well though— really well.” She credits her friends, such as Cary Grant, for helping guide her career. “He used to come to our house and have spaghetti dinners,” Stevens said. “He said, ‘Have fun on the way up because there are no rewards at the end. The fun is trying to get there.’ He was right. He was absolutely right. He was a wonderful friend.” She and her brother also counted among their friends Phil Spector, Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers, Atlantic Records’ founder Ahmet Ertegun, Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, Cher, Anthony Quinn and Bobby Darin. “If I hadn’t fallen in love with the fella I did, who knows what might have happened,” Stevens said about her career. “I always wonder about that, but I had a great life. After attending entrepreneurial and momclub meetings, she said she felt like she didn’t belong. She left one of the meetings and wrote about how she felt on her blog. “I’m a mom. I’m an entrepreneur. I’m both and there isn’t something that meets those needs for me in terms of meeting other like-minded women,” Pelletier explained. Her blog was read by a local newspaper and as they say, the rest is history. The Mom-e Club started in September 2010. The group has eight chapters in the Valley and seven

years. Edwards doesn’t have children. “It’s not exclusively moms of children,” she said. As a teacher she has 22 kids every day and comes home to fur, feather and bristle children. Mom-e Club is unlike any other organization out there, Edwards said. “It’s about empowering women entrepreneurs, helping them feel a connection, so I like to call it the coffee break from traditional networks.” She mentioned that with Mom-e Club there are so many chapters you show up when you can make it and sometimes you laugh, sometimes you cry. “You always get something out of it whether you want to or not.” The form of the club is different from other organizations. “The basis of the group is a roundtable discussion,” Edwards said. “Every single chapter has the same question. Scottsdale Author Shares Experience Living Off the Grid By Tracy House It sounds like a work of fiction: A family decides to live off the land, at one time living in their car. In talking with Anne Lafferty Hudgins, however, the story isn’t a work of imagination, but the retelling of how she, her husband and three children subsisted off the land in Wisconsin for 15 years. The Scottsdale author tells of her adventures and experiences in her new book, “Pared to the Bone—Core Hollow Days.” “We lived in the rugged hills of Wisconsin,” Hudgins said. “It’s a very rocky, rough hilly area. We were completely off the grid and we fended for ourselves for every provision. That means we provided our own shelter. We raised and hunted our own food. We warmed our home with the available wood on the property.” They were originally from the city, Page 14

selling their house and moving out to the 50 acres of abandoned property where they slept in the back of their pick-up truck and tents until building a shelter. “We learned how to do everything and we didn’t get many second chances,” Hudgins said. “We learned really fast.” The story chronicles the 1990s, “when everybody else was totally involved in their career and making lots of money,” Hudgins said. “We were edgy adventurers. The back to the land movement is really popular today and in the ‘70s and ‘80s it was, too.” Hudgins said suburbia and wall-to-wall carpeting wasn’t for her. She and her now-deceased husband made the conscious decision to forgo all the necessities of life and make-do with what they could find on the 50 acres. Hudgins was an adult education

Festive Sicilian Fig Bars ‘Cucidati’ pasta vixen

You get two Italians together and it’s not long before the conversation settles food and family—especially during the holidays! Thus began my friendship with Vinny Dejohn, formerly the wine and specialty food buyer at Whole Foods Market in Scottsdale. Getting his suggestions for a good vintage was great, but getting his vintage family recipe for an Italian fig cookie was even greater. Cucidati is one of the most delightful and delicious Sicilian holiday treats. Thankfully, Vinny’s mission a few years ago was to contact his great aunt, carve out some time and preserve a family recipe once and for all. Here’s how Vinny put it: “Great Auntie Antoinette Arnone was 93 years old when she died. Ten years ago during the holidays, I went back to New York and I made arrangements to spend time with events calendar

Auntie Arnone and have her teach me how to make ‘Goog-i-dottie,’ as she would call them. “We spent all afternoon making the cookies. Not only did I leave with Cucidati, but also her handwritten recipe card and her grandmother’s meat grinder that she herself has been using to grind the fig mixture for 60 years! I was so appreciative of her for taking the time to pass along her recipe. I often think of those treasured moments together.” Vinny’s version of this soft, flavorfilled fig cookie with icing and little colorful candies is now part of my own holiday tradition. What better way to honor my own Sicilian father. The time put into making these delights is well worth it. Keep them in an airtight container and pass them around the table for a festive holiday treat.

Cucidati For the Fig Bar Filling 1 (11 oz.) package of dates 1/2 box raisins 1 string of dried figs or 2 packages (7 oz. each) figs. 1 small can of frozen orange juice concentrate (do not dilute) 1 tablespoon cinnamon 1/2 tablespoon ground cloves 1/2 cup honey 1 cup strawberry preserves 1 shot whiskey 1 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Soak raisins and figs in warm water. Drain, Add raisins, figs and dates in food old-fashion grinder or food processor. Add the remainder of ingredients and mix together. Set aside. For the Dough 2 eggs 1 cup sugar 1/2 lb shortening 6 cups flour 1/4 cup baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup of milk 1 tablespoon vanilla

Mix eggs, shortening and sugar in mixer. Sift flour, baking powder and salt. Add alternately to the first mixture along with milk and vanilla. Refrigerate for three to four hours (It rolls out easier) Roll out dough as thick as piecrust. Cut into 3-inch wide strips. Put filling in center and fold over dough. Cut into 1 1/2 inch bars. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Recipe makes about 80 bars. Recipe can be cut in half. Icing: 2 cups powdered sugar 2 tablespoons milk or cream (slightly more if needed) 1 teaspoon vanilla Candy sprinkles

Scottsdale Station Restaurant Global Cuisine and Big, Bold Flavors Scottsdale Station is open in The Village at Hayden and for those not familiar with their concept, they’ll love what they’ve been missing. Owners Robert and Linda Gabrick are also the owners of Prescott Station, and previously Carefree Station. Their unique menu and libations are a tour de force of flavors and quality that have repeatedly thrilled diners for years. The new restaurant boasts both an elegant and slightly rustic feel that creates an entirely welcome ambiance. Executive Chef Thomas Nasworthy presents one-of-a-kind global cuisine sensations at Scottsdale Station with the assistance of Chef Ben Lieberman and Pastry Chef Heather Nasworthy. Together, they bring a diverse and upscale menu to the new restaurant. “We searched the world for flavors and came up with unique recipes,” stated Assistant General Manager Tim Buell. “We have everything from Asian and French Provincial to Regional Americana and Southwestern. The food features big, bold flavors and we’re definitely a chef-driven restaurant.” Scottsdale Station boasts 8,200 square feet, a 120-seat bar, beautiful patio areas, outdoor fireplaces and a comfortable private dining room. The location and spaciousness were important to the Gabricks when considering where to open their concept restaurant. “This place is amazing,” Buell said. “It has a neighborhood feel which is what we’re used to and we’re looking forward to meeting our new guests. We’re also very involved in the community.” The bar is also known as “BevHeaven.” Buell stated, “We have the highest-rated wine, beer and liquor from all over the world.” In fact, Scottsdale Station’s motto for their unique bar is “BevHeaven, where only the best wine, spirits and beer get to heaven.” This is definitely not a sports bar. Rather, BevHeaven is focused on the appreciation and on the town

Scottsdale Station also has a “raw bar” with oysters, sashimi and carpaccio dishes, plus a fusion twist on sushi hand rolls. “We have a huge smoker here, so we’ll be doing charcuterie, too,” Buell said. There is something for every taste palate, but save room for dessert. Nasworthy’s handmade dessert selections include Chai Tea Tiramisu, Tres Leche and award-winning nontraditional crème brulees, pot de crèmes and fluff y cheesecake with chocolate ganache. Many of the desserts are offered “bite-sized,” just perfect when you only want a small portion. Lunch and dinner are served daily in addition to Sunday brunch.
