One of the ways it does this is through its Mobile Education Exhibit, which travels across the country. It will make several stops in Arizona through April.

“The MEE fits into (our mission) because it is our largest tool in our teaching toolbox, literally,” said Trish Gardner, the MEE manager.

“It’s 70-feet long, so the MEE goes out on the road, and we travel through the United States, and we teach people about Wreaths Across America.”

Wreaths Across America is a nonprofit that places wreaths at veterans’ graves every December. To accomplish its goals, the Mobile Education Exhibit shows plaques,

The Mobile Education Exhibit also serves as the official welcome home station for Vietnam veterans who were not properly welcomed home. Gardner said the first exhibit was in 2019.

“In 2019 our director of transportation, Don Queeney, had this great idea about an educational trailer and taking it out across the United States,” she said.

“One of the biggest challenges Wreaths Across America faces is that I want to say at least six out of 20 people don’t know anything about us.

So, the MEE is our tool to get us out there and get that word (out) about Wreaths Across America.

Last year in the United States we had 2 million volunteers place over 2.7 million wreaths at over 3,700 locations with about 6,100 sponsorship groups.”

David Edwards, a petty officer who served in the U.S. military from 1969 to 1973, has helped Wreaths Across America place wreaths at Beaufort National Cemetery for the past 15 years. He said Wreaths Across America’s work has been invaluable to veterans.

“It means quite a bit to me to honor my brothers and sisters that gave parts of their lives to the military,” he said. “Whether it

FOUNDERS' DAY from page 1 in Southern Arizona, and Founders’ Day is a source of pride for that achievement.

This year’s iteration, on Saturday, March 18, starts with the traditional parade at 10 a.m., followed by performances, activities and food at the Marana Municipal Complex.

While Founders’ Day has expanded into multiple events, the town considers the parade to be the main attraction. It’s community entry, meaning anyone can be a part of the parade, and sign-up is free for all participants. Whether riding vehicles, walking with animals or dancing across the street, the entire Marana community can participate.

“The parade has always been the crown jewel of the day,” Scheer said. “Over the years, on the backside, the festival has expanded into a resource showcase.”

The town council and Mayor Ed Honea will ride in a vintage fire truck, preceding costume-clad members from Old Tucson and Marana’s high school marching bands.

Local businesses and associations will also participate, handing out candy and accessories.

As the special events supervisor of Marana Parks and Recreation, Scheer and the association played a vital role in organizing the event. The festival following the parade introduces many attractions that tell Marana’s story and its history prior to

incorporation.

“It’s a pretty big day, parade and festival combined,” Scheer said. “We want people to go out and learn about the history of Marana. It’s all about honoring Marana’s founding–who we were and who we are.”

While Founders’ Day includes a car show and live music, it will also feature a Chinese lion dance from the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center. The performance honors the descendants of immigrants who came to Marana with the railroad.

Along with an additional show from Compañía de Danza Folklórica, the Marana Heritage Conservancy will have its history RV open for families to learn about their community.

Marana is as strong as its local businesses, and Founders’ Day supports many through their 20-plus food trucks, nonprofit stands and other company activities.

Scheer encouraged families arriving early to take advantage of the Copper Cafe, open from 8 to 10 a.m. and located in the MHC Healthcare Building.

“They can grab a cup of coffee and they can support not just a locally owned cafe, but a workforce reintroduction program,” Scheer noted.

Another major attraction is the Wreaths Across America truck, which only drives to the region every five years. According to Scheer, this is the first time it’ll visit Ma-

utton Brew House combined two Southern Arizona staples — beer and cycling — to develop an event that fosters fun, fitness and commu-

nity.

For two years, Beer + Bikes has met bimonthly for a roundtrip ride to 1912 Brewing Company.

Cathay Klein — active cyclist and longtime friend of Button Brew House owners Todd and Erika Button — has cycled the event since the start. She’s now considered one of the ride’s leaders and said there are many reasons why she returns.

“It’s the camaraderie,” Klein said. “It’s getting together and chatting and drinking a beer.”

The Beer + Bikes ride is a 16-mile trip to 1912 Brewing Company and back to Button Brew House. Both brewers are located on the Chuck Huckelberry Loop, a popular trail for most outdoor activities around Tucson’s perimeter. Klein said it contributes to cycling’s popularity.

“With these two breweries being just off the loop, it makes it convenient to be able to stop and have a beer,” Klein said.

It started as an evening event in the summer, but the Buttons run it during the day in cooler months. The Beer + Bikes group meets around 11 a.m. every other week. They bike 8 miles to 1912 Brewing Company for a drink or two and then ride the 8 miles back to Button for another.

It’s casual. Klein said they never drink too much to be unsafe, and they rarely stay in time for more than a few drinks at the other brewer.

“We only have time for two beers,” Klein said. “It’s pretty doable with a 16-mile bike ride.”

Beer + Bikes also ensures that no matter the skill level of riders, no one gets left behind. Some cyclists bring road bikes and zip down the path; others are slower or more averagely paced. Many who join aren’t experienced cyclists.

Klein encouraged people not to let their bike experience sway them from joining. The consistent riders lead everyone safely to and

“We watch out for each other,” Klein said.

“There are a lot of people who have shown up and haven’t ridden 16 miles before. There is one of us who will wait for them and make sure they’re good and able to get to the brewery.”

The ride is also not exclusive to bicycles, either. Klein noted that one time, someone rode a Hoverboard with the cyclists. Anyone can join with any vehicle as long as they can keep up. The point of Beer + Bikes is to enjoy the ride on the Loop and the brews of the companies.

The group will meet next on Saturday, March 18. The event usually ends around 2 p.m. in the spring, but during summer evening hours, riders can also partake of the food trucks near Button Brew House. They switch out weekly, and both brewers also serve a range of snacks.

While the alcohol and food are not included, the ride and company of fellow bike and brew lovers are free. Beer + Bikes is an introduction to classic Tucson activities, and to Klein, the close camaraderie is the best part of it.

“I’ve met most of my best friends through breweries,” Klein said. “That’s the really neat thing about Tucson. The beer community is such a small community. We’re tightknit.”

Museum supports wildlife with wine festival

he Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is a wilderness nonprofit powerhouse, supporting itself with creative fundraisers like its upcoming WineDown with Wildlife. These events help fund the museum’s attractions, including the zoo, botanical garden, art gallery, natural history museum and aquarium.

“We have these five different aspects and every aspect needs support,” said Tianna Holder, marketing and media manager.

“We have fundraisers for all different areas of the museum, but this one is to support our wildlife.”

The museum’s third WineDown with Wildlife will be hosted on Saturday, March 18, on the museum grounds and features performances and animal spotlights.

Holder said the festival, like many other museum events, strives to support the local community. The museum will offer drinks, food and acts, all from Arizona.

“We’re huge on supporting local in both Tucson and the regions of Arizona,” Holder said. “It’s really fun to partner with these local wineries and help promote the Arizona wine scene.”

Attending wineries include Bruzzi Vineyard and Rancho Rossa Vineyards, and refreshments will be served by Bawker Bawker Cider House and The Meading Room, among others.

For food, Holder noted that most vendors are returning from the last few years. Beyond Bread, Ciao Down and The Curry Pot will make appearances, as well as treats from Popped Artisan.

“Some of them we reach out to and some

of them reach out to us,” Holder said. “They are all vendors we’ve worked with before...we have great relationships.”

The main attractions, however, are the animals. The event starts with a complimentary visit to the Stingray Touch exhibit. Later that night, the museum will host three animal spotlights, including separate animal enrichment with its resident ocelot and Mexican Wolves. The third spotlight is a surprise, and guests can purchase the add-on with their ticket.

The Mexican wolves are a new addition, which the museum acquired as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The museum goes through associated protocols to ensure safe transitions for the animals.

“If there’s an exhibit that’s empty, it doesn’t just get filled,” Holder noted. “There’s a process you have to go through, and we hold a very high standard of ethics. We were really excited to get these wolves.”

Along with the spotlights, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum will provide live entertainment throughout the festival. Local band Barnaby and the Butcher is scheduled to perform, as well as Flam Chen, a modern circus and fire theater. According to its mission statement, the group merges daredevil acrobatics, pyrotechnics and a mastery of air and fire arts.

Barnaby and the Butcher will perform onstage while Flam Chen will roam the museum grounds and display their work in costume. Holder was also eager to note the natural spectacle of the sky from the museum’s view. The museum will offer sunset and

“Most people don’t get the opportunity to watch the sunset at the museum because of our operating hours,” Holder said. “It’s a special time to be on the grounds when the sun goes down, and you get all those beautiful colors of the Arizona sunset. There’s really nothing like it.”

Tickets are available with general and VIP admission. Both allow attendees to 10 wine tastings and Stingray Touch. Vino VIP offers earlier entry and a goodie bag filled with local and regional items. Highlights include a Bruzzi Vineyard wine-tasting voucher, a limited-edition Trevor mock bandana and a pack of Nature/SEARCH sunflower seed mix.

All tickets are available at a discount to desert museum members. There will also be designated driver tickets available for general or VIP admission. These guests will receive all the perks from either ticket except for alcohol. With VIP, they will get their bottle of wine from the goodie bag at the end of the event.

Holder explained that due to its location and complicated roadway, the museum promotes safe driving practices for all guests.

“We really want to put an emphasis on drinking responsibly,” Holder said. “It can be a little difficult to get an uber to or from the museum. It’s a winding road, and city buses don’t come to the museum, either.”

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum offers a variety of experiences for visitors, but it also promotes wildlife outreach. All proceeds from the wine festival will go directly to animal care and museum maintenance. It’s events like these that help the museum educate the community and make a difference in the environment.

“The desert museum is a nonprofit organization, so all fundraising, all donations and every ticket sold is important to us,” Holder said. “It takes a lot of time, money, dedication and a lot of hands.”

He also said Wreaths Across America also helps veterans and civilians connect — even if they can’t be there in person to honor their fallen veterans.

“I have people come out here who have no family at Beaufort National Cemetery who help me lay a wreath for families who can’t come during the ceremony,” he said.

“There’s a lady who lives in the state of Washington. She can’t come every year but we lay a wreath on her relatives’ grave and I take a picture and send it to her. This gets all of us close together.”

Each month, the organization distributes close to 90,000 pounds of food to around 1,200 local families. Marana Unified School District is one of the largest school districts in Arizona, covering an astounding 550 square miles. It takes a lot of staff and faculty to make something that big happen, but MUSD is up for the job, with 1,700 employees keeping watch over 13,000 students. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dan Streeter keeps everything humming.

One night in June 2021, Alejandro and Gilbert Diaz talked about opening a restaurant. That same night, Gilbert died. Last year in July, Alejandro opened his family-owned restaurant Alejandro “Serious Mexican, Mariscos and Fusion Food” to honor the memory of his brother and celebrate his life. The restaurant pays tribute to Alejandro’s living and deceased relatives through different menu items, which are named after them. Everything at the restaurant is made from scratch with fresh ingredients. Alejandro works with small, local vendors to source food such as ribeye and tortillas. The vendors are listed on the menus.

Scheer claimed the event is a key way to get families involved in the community, especially kids. There will be lawn games, finger-painting and arts and crafts stations throughout Founders’ Day. FC Tucson will also provide interactive inflatables. The Marana Public Works Division will scatter macro machines across the grounds to promote its department and share the stage with the Obsessions Car Club show.

All attractions, from exhibits to shows, are of little to no cost to participants.

“We really do pride ourselves in providing low-cost and free experiences at our events,” Scheer said. “It’s fun to transition to the festival side and have all the families running around all of our attractions and activities.”

This year’s Founders’ Day marks the 46th anniversary of Marana, and among the festivities is an honoring of the city’s culture. It’s something the Arizona Parks

and Recreation Association recognized with the 2022 Best Cultural Awareness Program Award. Along with the Natural Resources Award, the acknowledgment shows Marana’s impact in Arizona.

Since the late 1970s, Marana has been a major contributor to commerce in Southern Arizona. State recognition is the icing on the cake.

Local students to compete in state spelling bee

wo local students are cramming this week for the 2023 Arizona State Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 18, at Madison Center for the Arts in Phoenix.

Nathan Merrill of Legacy Traditional School and Karen Opoku-Appoh of Marana Middle School are among the state’s 27 spellers — ranging from grades three to eight — who will compete.

Arizona Educational Foundation is the main organizer of the Arizona State Bee, which is the final competition each year to determine who will represent Arizona in the Scripps National Bee in National Harbor, Maryland.

Arizona has one of the largest spelling bee participation rates in the nation, with 484,122 students competing this year from public, private, parochial and homeschools statewide, according to the foun-

dation.

For the two students who place first and second place in the State Spelling Bee, AEF supports travel for the students and their chaperones to represent Arizona in Maryland.

A recorded copy of the Arizona spelling bee will be uploaded to the Arizona Educational Foundation’s YouTube channel following the bee. The 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee Finals will be broadcast live on ION on Thursday, June 1.

you know how to spell it.”

Nathan said he wakes up early in the morning to go over the 4,000 possible words he may be asked to spell. Math is his favorite subject and he’s also an avid soccer player.

Otherwise, he spends time reading and with his four siblings. He enjoyed the fivebook series, “Unwind,” by Neal Shusterman.

Nathan’s parents, Curtis and Karalee Merrill, said their son reads voraciously, much like his 12-year-old sister.

“He also loves a good YouTube video by Denis Daily, Marc Grober or Dude Perfect,” Curtis said.

When he grows up, Nathan wants to work as a pilot — and he’s already had a chance to experience that.

“When I was in the fifth grade, our school did a program where we went through the curriculum of the history of aviation,” he said.

“I got to co-pilot an airplane for 20 minutes.

I really liked that. I just want to do it again.”

Curtis said he’s proud of his son.

“He’s really taken the initiative to study for the spelling bee,” Curtis said.

“He usually studies for an hour a day or more. His mother quizzes him on words and he writes down the words he misses. He has pages of words that he’s written.”

Nathan is a natural at public speaking, having had opportunities at his congregation, the Church of Latter-day Saints, his father said.

“He’s done so well,” he said. “He’s done almost all of this himself. We’re just here to watch him. It’s his vision for himself to do well and he’s succeeding.”

Karen Opoku-Appoh The daughter of Taucia González and Kofi Opoku-Appoh, Karen is in the eighth grade at Marana Middle School. One of six children, Karen is excited about the spelling bee.

“I have this document on my tablet that I use that has a bunch of words, so I study one page a day,” she said. “I use Merriam-Webster on the Chromebook to search the words.”

English language arts is her favorite subject and she’s hoping to go to medical school to be a pathologist.

“I always wanted to be a doctor,” she said.

“I was just sitting there, and I searched all the types of doctors. I came across pathologist and thought I wanted to try that out.”

When she’s not studying, she plays basketball or soccer or runs cross country. She looks up to her brothers, who are “really good at sports,” and obsesses over astrology.

González said she and her husband are proud of Karen.

“She’s always been the speller of the household,” she said with a laugh. “At each stage, she stayed super humble. She’s super honored to go to the next stage. If she doesn’t win, she still sees it as a win because at least she’ll get a lot of hours in her week back.”

Her mother called her “super studious,” and the type of student who’s curious about learning.

“She talks to us about what she’s learning — especially through the spelling bee process,” González said. “Her dad and I laugh that her vocabulary has surpassed us for college-educated adults.”
