In your December issue, you had a Sound Off from someone who had complaints when he or she asked for an ID for anyone who wanted alcohol, even though that person was obviously well over 21.

This takes me back 53 years, to the day I turned 21. I took my UofA activity card and my driver’s license (for identification) and my birth certificate (to prove I was 21) to the State Building to get my Arizona age-21 card. At that time, if you wanted an alcoholic drink, you had to have either an age-21 card or a military ID card. (There must have been provisions for transients or older people, but as a 21-year-old, I couldn’t have cared less.) A couple of years ago, after I moved back to Tucson for retirement, I was “carded.” Knowing it wasn’t the waiter or waitress’ fault, I put up no fuss. Then, maybe four years ago, I came across my age-21 card, and stuck it in my wallet—just in case. Finally my chance came. I whipped out my age-21 card, the waitress looked at me, puzzled, and asked what it was.

I explained, and she took it, explain-

ing she had to ask the manager. She came back apologizing that her manager told her she could not accept it. (I was about 74.) I laughed, and showed her my driver’s license. Later, I saw the official chart that showed what could be accepted as proof of age and, sure enough, the Arizona age-21 card was not there. Now I’m wondering: what, in the intervening 52 years, caused the age-21 card to go from the only acceptable proof of age to an unacceptable document? Did the state have trouble with people who were over 21 in the ’60s suddenly reverting back to being under 21 in the 2000s?

I have a Sound Off. I have a neighbor who has not gotten a license plate in almost five years. She drives around with the little paper in her window and has never paid the amount to get her license like all of us. They say there’s nothing they can do until she does something wrong on the street and they pull her over.

You’d think there would be something in computers that they can keep on track with people who haven’t paid.

o those of you waiting breathlessly, here are my annual Curmuddy Awards, presenting ugly mud-pie statuettes to those deserving wretches for wacky, wicked and witless conduct in 2014.

Bureaucratic Blundering Bullies: The Social Security Administration is aggressively trying to collect old debts from the children of people who were allegedly overpaid benefits decades ago. Many of those benefits recipients are now deceased.

A Failing Grade in Common Sense: Canon City Schools near Colorado Springs, Colorado, suspended 6-year-old kindergarten student Hunter Yelton for kissing a girl on the hand.

The boy was accused of sexual harassment by the brilliant school administrators.

Punishment Unfitting the Crime: At another school, Gracemor Elementary in Kansas City, Kansas, a blind 8-year-old student, Dakota Nafzinger, supposedly hit a classmate on a bus. As punishment, school officials took away the blind boy’s cane and replaced it with a swimming pool “noodle,” a water toy, “so he could have something to hold onto.”

The Obnoxious Bloviator Curmuddy goes to the Rev. Al Sharpton, who inserts himself into any issue, including a facts-be-damned harangue against the Ferguson, Missouri, police and officer Darren Wilson who had to defend himself by shooting Michael Brown. After weeks of testimony and hard evidence, a grand jury determined not to criminally indict Wilson.

were leaving before it was over. Well, I encountered this last month while at a luncheon. Granted, he wasn’t good—played guitar, sang and tried to be funny. Bless his heart; a person can’t be something you’re not. But women left and he was singing. I didn’t care for him either, but in no way would I have left. I wrote an apology on a napkin and gave it to him. At least I felt better.

(He thanked me!) I honestly couldn’t believe these dumb women!

My Unswift Justice Curmuddy goes to the sluggish judicial system in Phoenix that convicted Jodi Arias of the first-degree murder of her boyfriend Travis Alexander in 2008 and has yet to complete the sentencing phase. When will we hear the last of the monstrous Arias?

And finally, the Lifetime Achievement Award for Failures, Fiascos and Malfeasance is awarded to President Barack Obama and his administration of inept hard-core ideologues who have trampled on the Constitution and proved that the leftist policies embraced by the Democrat Party are the most destructive and divisive America has ever experienced.

The Lost Art of Customer Service

ur fridge went rogue the other day.

Unsatisfied with chilling just our vegetables and beer supply, it lashed out across the entire kitchen: freezing our milk into cinderblocks, petrifying our fruit and making the adjacent microwave cold to the touch. When one of the dogs frosted over, we decided to act.

“It’s a motherboard,” the repairman told me.

“That sounds expensive,” I said.

Turns out, it’s only slightly more expensive to have Beyoncé come over with dry ice and an electric fan. So my wife and I went appliance shopping. And boy howdy, did we make friends!

“Is there anything I can do for you?”

(No, I’m staring at fridges.)

“Would you like to know about our pricing?” (No, it’s here on the fridges.)

“Looking at refrigerators?”

There’s something about watching the floor rep stride your way that makes you feel like chum in the water. I don’t blame them—they’re trying to earn a living— but these days, their companies program them with so much strategy that it takes a lot of effort just to keep them at bay.

“Would you like to hear about our value points program?”

“Would you like to open a credit card?”

“Would you like to give me your name so I can see if you’re in our system?”

I would like you to shut up for awhile.

Some of us are calculating how much plasma we’ll have to sell to support this new fridge.

In the end, we bought a fridge from the third store we went to, largely because of the floor clerk and her unusual approach: she walked up to us, said, “Hi,” and let us stare at a floor model for as long as we wanted. The three of us stared like the secret of life might tumble out of the icemaker. Then we noticed the bruises all over her face.

“Yeah,” she said. “I fell down a flight of stairs.”

We then discussed a number of things: the stained glass coloration of her face; anecdotes of injury and swelling; the treachery of stairs. Then she nodded toward the fridge. “Those are pretty good,” she said. “I’ll be over there if you have any questions.”

Turns out we did. And she answered them. And we wound up buying the fridge. And even though the transaction made us part with $1,000 painfully close to the holidays, my wife’s takeaway, as we left the store, was this: “I liked her. She was nice.”

These days, businesses look for differentiators—those things that distinguish them from the pack. In this era of club cards, Groupons, coupons, website deals and membership drives, the mostoverlooked differentiator is the human element.

Everybody gives lip service to customer service. It’s like “national security” in the political arena—you have to be for it. Every business today says customer service is a critical part of their value system. And yet I still spend eons of time on the phone listening to hold music, (“Your call is important to us”) or bouncing between departments as they describe how they can’t help me.

The Internet has only made this worse, because many companies believe pop-up boxes can substitute for actual human contact. That’s why, whenever you’re on the web, you collect “Let your voice be heard!” and “Your opinion matters!” boxes like burrs. Your opinion doesn’t matter. They just want to collect your demographic information to see who’s rolling across their website.

If it mattered, they’d send you a woman with a stained glass face.

“I’ve been in this business 40 years,” our sales lady said. And you could tell, because we were not rushed. (Car dealerships taught me: If they’re rushing you into a decision, it’s because there’s something they don’t want you to notice.)

We talked about the evolution of refrigerators. I told her motherboards were from the devil. “It’s the buttons,” she said, gliding her hand across a fridge door. “All these fridges have computerized buttons. All the buttons go to a motherboard. Motherboards go wrong.” So she sold me on the extended warranty, without using the words “extended” or “warranty.”

Human interaction is the most compelling—and least predictable—part of the sales process. And companies hate

that. Because you cannot plan humanity into a sales campaign. You can’t dissect personal interaction into discrete components and measure out exactly how much of human-ness you need to close a sale. You can try—and organizations do: Every one of us has fielded a “can I help you?” and a firm handshake from a representative on a sales floor.

But the moments that follow tell you whether they really want to help you, or they’re simply doing the “I care” dance they learned in sales training.

In the last five years or so, I’ve seen smarter companies begin to get the idea that there’s no substitute for genuinely caring about your customers. Recessions can do that. When business dwindles, profits dive and new prospects become precious ore, smart companies rediscover that customers don’t bond to a logo, or a catchphrase or even a price point nearly as well as they do through relationships.

In the meantime, it’s both hilarious and aggravating to see businesses that don’t get it try to fabricate the human touch. Some think they can do it by building sensitive buzzwords (“caring,” “kind” and “personal”) into their ad campaigns and onto their websites. Be-

cause carpet-bombing you with fuzzy adjectives is the quickest way to your heart. Others air videos, on television and social media, showing their representatives doing philanthropic things in their communities.

And some organizations say, “The hell with subtlety,” and just tell you they care. I know my former cable company cared about me, because I spent so many hours holding a phone to my ear, listening to a customer service message repeat it like a mantra, while I stared at a screen full of snow.

If that organization ever called me and asked how they could win back my business, I’d refer them to a certain appliance store. I’d tell them to look for a nice lady with a bruised face, ask her about refrigerators, and take notes on what follows. Success depends upon customer loyalty, customer loyalty is won through relationships, and relationships are built with genuine human contact, one at a time.

I’d put them on hold first, though. For about a half an hour. Even though their call is important to me.

Believe it or not, if you have an old car or an old system that is running in your house, and it needs replacement parts, you may be out of luck. Someone has bought up all the extra plumbing, auto and electrical repair parts. That’s the height of greed, to have a bidding war on leftover parts for running America. Sounds more like Congress than ever. It’s the new way of business.

To the person who was surprised that the Obama administration is using the IRS to spy on people and do other harmful things to people. You act as if this is the first time this has happened. Does anyone out there remember the Nixon administration? They used every federal agency that they could to spy on and use corruption and any other dirty tricks that he could to get at their supposed enemies. They were paranoid.

By the way, for all of you great Republicans out there, Nixon was a Republican and arguably the worst president

we’ve ever had in the history of our country.

I was appalled to read an opinion in Sound Off repeating the false information about the Obama’s losing their law licenses to avoid ethics charges. Why do you allow these falsehoods to be published without fact checking. This is not opinion, but rather deliberate misinformation that could easily be fact checked at www.factcheck.org/2012/06/theobamas-law-licenses.“We are all entitled to our opinions, but not our own facts.”

What I would like to know is why can’t the states that need water get together with the states that have way too much now and make arrangements to harvest that snow because snow, when melted, is nothing but water. Texas has been in a longtime drought. Arizona’s lakes and rivers need water. California is depleting its water reserve because of drought. It seems to me that harvesting the snow would not only help states that need the water, but it would also ...continues on page 38

The Widow’s Corner The 1924 Phoenician

have a Phoenix Union High School yearbook, “The Phoenician,” from 1924 that belongs to a mystery person.

It’s a tan book with an orange spine that I taped together wanting to keep it in intact for the owner or owner’s family.

There is no name on it to identify if this person is a student or faculty member.

However, I believe from the few quotes inside the front and back pages, this book once belonged to a student.

How I came upon this treasure is a story in itself. My husband arrived home from work five years ago carrying an old tattered book. As an antiquarian, my curiosity was immediately aroused.

Within minutes of flipping through the pages, I blurted out, “Where did you find this yearbook?”

“One of my sales people gave it to me knowing I display memorabilia on the walls of my restaurant,” said my husband, who owned the downtown eater, Tom’s Tavern.

“But who does the book belong to,” I asked him.

“We don’t know. A vendor found it 40-some years ago when he was 12 and has kept it ever since.”

The first page reads: “Arthur ‘curly’ Brutus Crude Sheik Boob Mercer—’25.’ Every time you swat the tennis ball remember all the tricks you got from me.” I know now the owner of this yearbook played tennis.”

Two pages over, I find a small rectangular box which reads: In Memoriam, William Seaton Gregg, Died Feb. 25, 1924. William Gregg was the instructor of industrial arts at the time of his death.

A name, Sharlot Hayes, stands out under “autographs.” My Google inquiry turns up a death certificate with “Cause of Death: Injuries to head, received in an automobile accident, skull crushed, jaw broken, instantaneous.”

She died in June 1924.

One student, Reg, had a passion for drawing. He doodled with ink pens in class and passed personalized black and white sketches to his friends. He became art editor for the school paper and yearbook. His graphic illustrations launched his career as a cartoonist and commercial artist for the Arizona Republic. Reg

Manning later won a Pulitzer Prize (1951) for his political cartoon, HATS. Another student, Kemp, ran track, played tug of war and was president of the Spanish club. He grew up riding horses and punching cows. He always had to win. After prohibition was repealed, he built the state’s liquor empire and became Arizona’s first billionaire.

The name Kemper Marley will be forever linked to the infamous Don Bolles car bombing.

I don’t want to forget the Queen of the Phoenician, Miriam Servinghaus, nor her King, Stuart Treadwell. Rose Hess was president of the sophomore class and Barry Goldwater, president of the freshman class. He looks like a young Barry with his sculptured nose and mouth. His yearbook essay describes his class: “The Freshman class of ‘27 promises to leave a memory of remarkable achievements during its four years of high school life. It is a class well worth watching.”

The Phoenix Union football team didn’t wear helmets as we know them, but instead a cross between a Shriner’s hat and a fighter pilot’s cap. They dressed in knickers, high socks and sturdy boots.

Priscilla Thayer, a French club member, and Lois Stidham, who belonged to the scholarship club and the debate squad, signed the book. Florence Campbell, who played volleyball and baseball, signed the book. They didn’t write short memories to preserve the moment, nor did they write sentimental blurbs to their friends. They kept it short and to the point; a simple name, an autograph, but nothing more. Not a “To” someone, which might have identified the owner. There are few clues as to who this book belongs to.

So please, if anyone knows of a Georgia Chambers, an Oma Adams, Healen McCalmont, a Margery Alexander, Bea Miller, Verna Harmon or Helen Heyne, known as Pickles, please let them know that I have a yearbook they signed in 1924 for a certain “mystery” student.

How Healthy Are Your Investments?

ell-known investment manager Peter Lynch encouraged investors to “buy what they know,” or use their own experiences as a guide to purchase stocks. As we enter 2015, it may be a good idea for you to find, research and possibly buy stocks in companies you are passionate about.

There are many ways to invest in healthy living: buying stocks in sports apparel companies, health and organic food companies, gyms, sporting goods stores, and even pharmaceutical, medical device and other health care companies.

Thanks to the Internet, it can be easy to find out if a company is publicly traded. You can try a search like, “XYZ company stock” or “XYZ stock quote.” This will almost always bring something up. If it is not publicly traded, you may find something that says, “XYZ...a private company.”

If the company you’re searching for is private, you won’t be able to buy stock in it, but don’t give up. If you like the company, chances are others do, too, and if it is rapidly growing, the company may eventually decide that it makes sense to come to market with an initial public offering of stock.

Another place to look for information on a company stock is on its website. Once you are on its site, look for “investor relations.” This is usually in amongst the small print areas like, “about us,” “press,” “career opportunities,” etc. If you do find investor relations, you know for sure the company is publicly traded. You will find a wealth of information here, including earnings reports, balance sheet information, a list of board of directors and officers of the company and, oftentimes, research reports from analysts at investment firms that follow the company’s stock.

After you’ve determined if your favorite healthy living companies

are public and therefore have stock, consider adding them to your portfolio.

It is then important to consider some investing basics.

Sir John Templeton, the founder and creator of the Templeton Funds, believed in some basic investing rules.

First, “buy value not market trends.”

Even if the market indexes continue to hover around multiyear highs, there are always some stocks that are not immediately in favor.

Remember, when possible, to buy low. This is one of the most basic and simple concepts, but it is difficult to have the patience to execute.

Second, he would advise to “invest, don’t speculate.” Remember, as a shareholder, you are an owner of the company, and act accordingly.

The last of Sir Templeton’s rules worth mentioning is to “diversify…by company, by industry. In stocks and bonds, there is safety in numbers. No matter how careful you are, you can neither predict nor control the future.

So you must diversify.”

Of course, diversification makes no guarantee that you will make a profit— or that you won’t see a loss—but it can help even out the highs and lows of different investments.

Buying what you know and are passionate about can be very rewarding emotionally. May you have a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

Continue Favorite Activities During the Aging Process

hen I was asked to write this month about healthy living while aging, my immediate thought was to suggest that we all continue doing the things that we like to do.

Don’t eliminate your favorite activities because you think you’re too old and for heaven’s sake, don’t worry about looking like you’re not acting your age.

Here are a few other elements to consider: Physical Activity: Embrace fun.

Try something new. If you’re bad at it, practice. But be practical. If something really hurts, find out why. If anyone tells you it’s just a function of getting older, please know that while many things have an age-related component, there are often causes entirely independent from aging. Take balance issues, for example.

It wouldn’t be advisable to take up rock climbing, but you could certainly learn exercises to help. And you can explore whether anything else is fueling those changes, from hearing issues or an infection. Don’t just write changes off to old age. If it’s fixable, get it fixed.

If your provider’s explorations yield nothing, then ask about coping skills to compensate so you don’t limit your life.

Cognitive: Healthy living means keeping your mind open and active, whether that means developing additional expertise, taking a class, or trying new hobbies and interests. Your brain is like any other organ. It needs exercise. And the remarkable thing about learning and accomplishment is that it boosts your mood.

Having said that, please see someone if you are concerned about your cognitive functioning. As you age, it will likely take a little longer to recall things.

You might experience some short-term, word-finding difficulties. But you should eventually be able to find that recall or retrieve those words. If you find you can’t learn to do something new with time and patience, that’s a problem. Maybe your thyroid is off, you have a B12 deficiency or you are taking a medication that is interfering with your cognition. Find

out if there is an identifiable root cause.

If early onset of dementia is identified, there are groups and classes that can help improve your quality of life.

Social Connections: We’ve all heard that seniors who are more engaged in their community and have more social connections have better outcomes. But you also have to be true to yourself. If you have always enjoyed being on your own and like doing solitary things, don’t change your whole personality.

As a culture, we really don’t plan for losses in our lives, but they’re going to happen—and if you are a person who has never been completely alone and are anticipating a loss, start to seek out new friends and new activities. Join a book or chess club. Volunteer. Strengthen your existing networks and be open to new ones. It’s not always easy, but if you are not used to being alone, those connections become more important, not less.

Basic Functions: As you age, your appetite might shrink and you may start to lose weight. That’s particularly true if you’re eating alone and just don’t want to bother. Make sure you are getting the proper nutrition to maintain your health and energy.

Sleep needs go down as you age.

If, however, those fewer hours leave you tired or confused, then seek out assistance, particularly if sleep apnea or frequent urination is a cause. The key isn’t the number of hours you’re sleeping.

It’s how it makes you feel to not sleep.

Address hearing problems. The sooner you can get hearing assistance, the easier it is to adapt. You could be missing out on good conversation and better jokes.

Mood: If you’re feeling isolated and depressed, there’s nothing wrong with seeking help in the form of a group, a counselor or medication. Don’t let stigma prevent you from living a full life.

Loss and challenges are simply a part of life—and not the exclusive domain of seniors. Then again, so it is with resilience and hope.

We have tried to get him to sell and move into an assisted living place, but he will not hear of it. He says we will have to take him out of his house when he is through with this life. I worry about him all the time. His memory is good so far, and he is a pretty good cook. His vision is not so good, although he still drives to the store. How do I get him to see he is not safe in his home anymore?

ear Worried: You are describing a common problem, a problem that I saw like you are seeing it, when I was a younger person. Now that I am older, I see it differently. Now, I believe that one of the privileges of age is to make choices for myself, even if they make be risky for my health or safety. For example, if I want to stay in my house and fall occasionally, I should be able to make that choice. I would wear a pendant to call for help if I have a serious fall, or if it is not serious, I would get up and go about my business. There are some wonderful assisted living places now, but please understand they cannot keep your father from falling. Of course, if he fell there, there would be helpers readily available. What I am saying is that the right answer for you may not be the right answer for your father. You do not need to feel guilty for letting him do things his way. If his health greatly deteriorates, he may not be able to continue his choices. Signed, GG

You can only imagine what it was like 40 years ago to be labeled a lesbian. After 40 years together, we were able to get married and come out of the closet and go fully public. Shaved Salad with Dijon Vinaigrette :: by Jan D’Atri T hey say never look back, so onward to 2015. But just this once, I’m looking back to holiday dishes, because there was one side salad I was introduced to that is just too good to leave behind. It’s going to be my go-to salad this year for a tasty and healthful plate of goodness and I think you’re going to love it too.

It’s a shaved salad with bursts of sweetness from cranberries or raisins, the perfect amount of crunch from toasted almonds, and a phenomenal Dijon dressing punched up with horseradish. The combination leaves your taste buds wanting to come back for more and more and more.

The original recipe was given to me

by Chef Ryan Clark, the executive chef of Agustin Kitchen in Tucson.

Clark, a three-time “Iron Chef ” winner, two-time World Margarita Champion and author of “Modern Southwest Cooking,” prepared this salad for a cooking demonstration recently and the dish absolutely wowed the crowd. He made it with shaved Brussels sprouts and I have since

created variations with green cabbage or Napa cabbage and substituting raisins for the dried cranberries to change it up a bit.

The tangy vinaigrette is the perfect complement to balance the sweetness from the raisins and dates. It introduced me to grape seed oil, and now it’s one of my favorite cooking and finishing oils.

Now, this recipe is designed for a party-sized bowl of salad. You can cut the recipe in half for a smaller amount, but I’ve kept the original amounts because one of the best things about this particular salad is that you can make it ahead, and it keeps in the refrigerator for days. Unlike a regular salad tossed in dressing, this one stays crunchy, firm and flavorful.

I love this recipe so much that I now keep plenty of chopped dates, raisins and slivered almonds on hand to fulfill my craving for this salad anytime I want.

Plus, it’s a great way to eat well in the New Year. Here’s to your good health in 2015!

Shaved Salad with Dijon Horseradish Vinaigrette

(Party size. Cut recipe in half for four to six servings) 3 pounds Brussels sprouts (can substitute one large green cabbage or two Napa (or cabbage) add toasted almonds, cabbages) cranberries (or raisins), dates, shallots, 1 1/2 cups sliced almonds, lightly toasted fresh grated cheese, salt and pepper.

1/4 cup dried cranberries (can substitute Pour Dijon Horseradish Vinaigrette raisins, regular or golden) over salad and gently toss. When 1/4 cup fresh dates, chopped into small plated, sprinkle small amount of pieces shaved cheese over top.

2 medium shallots, sliced thin 1/2 cup grated Pecorino Romano or Dijon Horseradish Vinaigrette Parmesan cheese, shaved or grated 1 cup grape seed oil Salt and pepper to taste 1/4 cup Dijon mustard 2 ounces horseradish (regular or prepared) Discard any loose leaves from the 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar Brussels sprouts. Holding the stem, 1 teaspoon salt cut the Brussels sprouts into very thin 1/2 teaspoon pepper slices. Toss in a large bowl to separate layers. In a dry skillet, lightly toast Whisk or blend all ingredients sliced almonds. Place in a plate or together until well combined. Pour bowl to cool. To the Brussels sprouts over salad and toss.

Entertainment Zoppé Circus Comes to Reid Park’s Big Top ::by Manali Chavan

Z

oppé, the Italian family circus, has been dazzling audiences for about 170 years and will come to Reid Park Friday, Jan. 9, through Sunday, Jan. 11.

Established in Italy by a young street performer named Napoline Zoppè and then transplanted to America before World War II, the Zoppé Circus served as a symbol of victory once the war ended.

“Everyone wanted to see the circus because it was like a big celebration,” Sandra Zoppé says.

Sandra’s husband, Alberto Zoppé, is Napoline’s great-grandson. Alberto left Italy in the late 1930s to be part of the movie production of Cecil B. DeMille’s “The Greatest Show on Earth.” At first, Alberto was hesitant about leaving his homeland and family to work in America. However, he eventually decided to venture to America after the head of Ringling Brothers Circus, Johnny North, agreed to leave an elephant behind so that his family’s circus wouldn’t suffer. He continued to perform while in America and eventually met his future wife.

“I was on tour and he was doing the same variety show I was doing,” says Sandra. “He was doing a comedy act and he asked for girls from the audience to come and ride the horse, but he couldn’t get anyone to come from the audience.”

Jumping into action, Sandra pulled her hair into braids and offered to ride the horse for Alberto. He later asked if she was available to work for a few more of his shows. It wasn’t long before sparks flew between the two.

“I fell very much in love with him,” says Sandra.

The couple has three children: Carla, Giovanni and Tosca. Together

“It’s like watching something very beautiful,” says Sandra. “It’s not theater, it’s not circus, but it’s an inbetween mix. They have created a very beautiful show.”

Giovanni takes on the role of Nino the Clown and performs comedy acts. Carla and her husband perform a dog act. Tosca, taking after her father, is an equestrian artist.

“She’s (Tosca) our bareback rider,” says Sandra. “She does ballet on horse back and she jumps over fire.

She’s amazing.”

Dealing with the ‘Holiday Blues’

Overwhelming Sadness Is Not a Normal Part of Aging

S

ome people think sadness is a natural part of getting older. After all, as we age, the likelihood of experiencing health issues and loss of loved ones increases significantly. The holiday season can sometimes make issues of sadness more acute. Periods of sadness can be normal. But it’s more than a little sadness when it persists to the point that it regularly interferes with your daily life.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines depression as a persistent sad, anxious or empty feeling, or feeling of hopelessness and pessimism.

According to a 2007 report at www.ajpmonline.net, about 7 million adults 65 and older (roughly 15 to 20 percent of that population) are affected by depression. Despite its prevalence, depression often goes unrecognized or untreated because people are ashamed to discuss it. They may view depression as a personal weakness or a character flaw. That’s unfortunate. Left untreated, depression can delay recovery or worsen the outcome of certain illnesses and even lead to suicide. Although many people assume that the highest rates of suicide are among young people, white males age 85 and older actually have the highest suicide rate in the United States, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

Get Screened. Routine screening can successfully identify people who are depressed and direct them to appropriate treatmentaccording to the CDC. Medicare covers the cost of depression screening in a primary care physician’s office, as long as the provider has resources to follow up with appropriate treatment and referrals. Additionally, depression screening is typically covered in a “Welcome to Medicare” visit or an “Annual Wellness Visit.” Depression

is evaluated with a screening tool, such as the Patient Health Questionnaire, or PHQ-9, which includes questions about the patient’s mood, energy, appetite and sleep habits.

Consider Treatment. When someone has been diagnosed with depression, their doctor may prescribe antidepressant medication for them. Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans, like those administered

by CareMore, cover most antidepressant medications. This includes selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, which affect the brain’s neurotransmitters. Because different medications affect different neurotransmitters, it may take time to find the one that works best so it is important to be patient. Take the medication as prescribed and watch for any side effects, such as trouble with balance. To be safe, remove all fall hazards from the home. Drug copays may apply. Lowincome members may qualify for extra help with payment for their drugs.

Some people may prefer talk therapy to medication. Talk therapy can be effective in treating mild to moderate depression, according to a report at www.nimh.nih.gov. Therapy also can be effective when combined with medication.

Medicare typically covers visits with mental health experts, including a psychiatrist, a clinical psychologist or a clinical social worker.

Copayments or coinsurance may apply. Talk to your doctor about a referral for therapy.

Be Active. Exercising three times a week can be effective in relieving major depression among seniors and decreasing the chances of depression returning, according to a study by Duke University Medical Center. Walking, gardening, dancing and swimming are all good forms of exercise. Many MA plans include a free gym membership as well as classes with other seniors.

Avoid Alcohol. It’s not uncommon for seniors to self-medicate with alcohol as a way of coping with loneliness or chronic pain. However, alcohol is actually a depressant that can compound depression. Medicare provides outpatient substance abuse counseling for people who need help to quit drinking.

Some Medicare members have access to a behavioral health service through their plan. In other instances, this benefit can be purchased for a small premium. Community mental health centers and social workers also may be able to provide services.

A

s cold and flu season begins, it is important to pay attention to the active ingredients in prescription and overthe-counter medications you take to alleviate your cold symptoms, especially if you already take medicines for chronic pain.

Every year, it is estimated that more than 126,000 hospitalizations and 17,000 deaths in the U.S. are due to overdose of acetaminophen and NSAIDs. Acetaminophen, which is an active ingredient in brands such as Tylenol, NyQuil and Percocet, is safe when taken as recommended, but can lead to liver damage when taken in excess.

NSAIDs, which are a class of pain-relieving drugs that include brands such as Advil, Motrin and aspirin, can cause stomach damage when overused.

The evaluation, which typically takes about two hours, is not intended as routine care, but assesses how a patient is doing medically, cognitively, psychosocially and functionally.

The clinic operates under the medical direction of Dr. Marlene Bluestein, who is board-certified in internal medicine with a subspecialty focus on geriatrics. Nurses and social workers are also part of the interdisciplinary team.

“It was the best physical I’ve had in years,” Goodrick says. “I thought the team worked together very well and it was a friendly, helpful environment.

You don’t feel scared or uncertain in any way. It was just very comfortable.”

Goodrick has a good relationship with her existing doctors, so in her case, the assessments were valuable in

confirming that she was doing what she needs to do to stay healthy.

In fact, because the assessment clinic has the luxury of time and doesn’t operate under the same time constraints as a primary care office, the clinic is structured to partners with patients’ physicians to share information on complex patients.

“It doesn’t do a patient any good for us to help them draw a roadmap to wellness, and then leave their provider out of the loop regarding our findings,” Bluestein says. “We’re very committed to sharing our findings with a patient’s primary care provider in order to inform their routine care. And if a patient doesn’t have a doctor, which is so important in developing continuity of care, we can help provide referrals.”

Dr. Jeffrey Selwyn, the medical director for Arizona Connected Care and a primary care physician by training, says that communication piece is pivotal. One of his more complex patients was being treated by 10 different specialists for a plethora of ailments from coronary artery disease to diabetes, kidney disease and vascular disease. The information gleaned from those specialists was key in developing a well-coordinated care plan to keep the patient as healthy as possible.

“Getting this information into a primary care physician’s hands in a timely manner really closes the loop on fragmented, uncoordinated care and helps inform the right decision for that patient’s care,” Selwyn explains.

“There is no question that sharing this kind of detailed information can only improve coordinated quality care delivery and better control costs by reducing duplication of services and helping physicians choose wisely.”

The clinic is a key piece in the TMC for Seniors service line, as is the new TMC Geropsychiatric Center at Handmaker, which opens this month

to offer short-term inpatient mental health treatment for older adults facing emotional and behavioral disorders.

“Getting older isn’t always an easy thing, with concerns over health or finances or loss,” says Terri Waldman, the director of the center, adding about 20 percent of older adults experience behavioral health issues at some point.

“If you’re 65 or older, you certainly have some coping skills. So this unit is a place where we can help people focus on their strengths—not on what’s wrong—and focus on those coping strategies that have taken them this far already.”

The Geropsychiatric Center will feature 16 beds, and offers around-theclock assessment and monitoring.

The two new centers join an existing menu of senior services that include educational classes and lectures, as

well as Medicare counseling, support groups and a meals program.

“There is no question that there are physiological and cognitive changes that come with aging, but gains in health and longevity are really recalibrating how we view aging in our culture,” says L’Don Sawyer, director of TMC for Seniors. “Our goal is to provide the education and resources that help honor the experience of aging, while helping to minimize its impacts and empower people to live more healthful lives.”

God’s Country on Alaska’s Inside Passages :: by Ed Boitano

F

or me, the cruise vacation is about sampling a new location, then deciding if I want to come back. My problem is that I want to return to every destination. And this was never truer than when I took an Alaska Inside Passage cruise and set eyes on Sitka. I knew I had to come back to Sitka with its rich native culture and Russian history. And seven years later, I did.

Back Story Sitka is located on Baranof Island in southeastern Alaska on the outer coast of the Inside Passage. The area was settled by the Kiksadi Clan of the Tlingit (pronounced: Cling-git) Indians, who called their home Sheet’ka Kwaan, “people on the outside of Shee.” Their 10,000 years of dominance ended in 1799 with the arrival of Alexander Baranof and the Russian-American Company, who came for the sea otter pelts, dubbed “soft gold.” An uneasy truce was established between the two groups, until the Tlingits drove the Russians out in 1802.

Three years later, Baranof returned—this time with a battleship— and proceeded to bombard the Tlingits until they retreated deep into the forest.

The Russians enjoyed a period of prosperity, but once the sea otters were gone, so were they, and the territory was sold to the United States in 1867. Sitka continued to prosper, thanks to fishing, but grew dramatically during World War II with the arrival of a naval airbase.

Today, Sitka is a thriving city with a population

of 8,881 (18.6 percent of whom are Tlingit), devoted to tourism and commercial fishing. Like most Inside Passage cities, it is only accessible by boat or plane. The downtown road runs 7 miles to the east and 7 miles to the west, and abruptly stops. Sitka is one of the most culturally advanced places I have ever visited. Its main road was welcoming to every ethnicity and income level. In a local bar one night, I saw millionaire commercial fishermen, museum curators, student summer workers and Tlingit artists with bloodlines that led to royalty, all laughing and joking together.

The first stop is Sitka National Historical Park, Alaska’s oldest federally designated park. The 113-acre coastal park is nestled in a temperate rain forest with beaches, hiking trails and scores of totem poles. The Isabel Miller Museum not only houses displays from Sitka’s history, but is also a great place to purchase local artwork. Another must-see is the Sheldon Jackson Museum, home to one of the oldest Native culture collections in the world. The museum, designated on the National Register of Historical Places, was created to preserve Alaska’s rich Native culture for today’s ancestors.

Adventures Meeting at 7:30 a.m. on a Saturday is not my idea of fun, but after five minutes into my journey on a Sitka Sound Ocean Adventure Kayaking Trip, I realized there was no other place I’d rather be.

Paddling through pristine waters, encountering sea birds, seals and even a family of whales—with majestic 3,200-foot Mount Edgecumbe (Sitka’s Mount Fuji) as a backdrop—is something that I will never forget.

ook around. It’s no secret that the way we communicate has changed over the years. From landline telephones to cellphones and video technology—what once was a staple in the home or office has gone by the wayside as wireless and Internet-based services have become the new platform for communicating.

With communication technology improving so rapidly, what are the chances that devices like TTY (text telephone) become outdated? Will iPads, IP-based services and VRS (Video Relay Service) become a necessity?

These days, technology has developed from cellphones to iPads to computers and all the apps that go along with them. As we look to the next generation of technologies, we need to make sure those services are contemplated now so that individuals will be ready to use those services in the future.

Goodbye Landlines During the past decade, customers have cut the cord on landlines and began to shift service to wireless or Internet-based options. For many people, this means making calls more convenient through different relay service options.

So, what can we expect?

To start, more VRS (Video Relay Services) options will be available. Video relay is accessed by contacting relay service via a videophone or a webcam on a personal computer, laptop, iPad, smartphone or other tablet, together with videophone software or apps.

With this service, those with a hearing loss can communicate virtually anywhere there is a Wi-Fi connection.

In addition, Internet Protocol (IP) Relay Service options will be used

more often. Through the use of the Internet, IP Relay Services would allow individuals to make calls from their computers instead of using their devices. An Internet relay service can be accessed via a relay service website or instant messaging.

Because many IP Relay Services now support various methods of communications, those with a hearing loss will have greater accessibility with IP Relay Services to communication through the use of Web browsers, mobile phone apps, text messaging, instant messaging and real-time text methods.

Things to Consider Out with the old and in with the new! With communication platforms and options for relay services changing, it may be time to upgrade to a device and service that will support advancing technology.

TCA Presents Orff’s Rarely Performed Version of ‘Carmina Burana’ “C

armina Burana” has been described as the most popular classical music, as “O Fortuna” has appeared in many films and been performed by both pop and classical musicians worldwide.

This month, the Tucson Chamber Artists will bring a rarely performed version of the popular cantata to Tucson in partnership with the third annual international Tucson Desert Song Festival.

Most music lovers are familiar with the orchestral version of Carl Orff’s profane cantata “Carmina Burana,” but few are familiar with the version prepared by Orff’s disciple, Wilhelm Killmayer, in 1956 and authorized by Orff 20 years after the original composition, to allow smaller ensembles the opportunity to perform the piece. This version features two pianos, percussion and choir. In addition, TCA will feature special guest soloists Edwin Vega, tenor; Hye Jung Lee, soprano; and Hugh Russell, baritone.

Orff’s classic deals with mortality and fate, nature, drinking, and tender, explicit, and highly sensual love. It’s no

wonder the authors of the original text, the Goliards, were a group of defrocked monks and minstrels known for their rioting, gambling and intemperance.

Don’t miss this rarely performed and equally exhilarating version of Orff’s timeless masterpiece!

This concert is being done in partnership with the Tucson Desert Song Festival, a three-week international music extravaganza pairing Tucson’s leading musical organizations with international musicians.

Celebrate the New Year With a Hike

he holidays pass us by as quickly as the cold winds blow. Come January, the seasonal events are over and a peaceful quietness abounds after New Year’s Eve parties subside.

This is a prime time to focus on oneself and one’s goals. Many desert dwellers start the New Year with a “firstday” hike or bike ride, and many more will begin this year with some kind of fitness or health resolutions in mind.

Hiking and biking are the perfect sports to begin an adventurous New Year’s fitness routine. Spending time outdoors is not just good for the body, it nurtures the spirit as well. January is a beautiful month to really explore the lower trails and enjoy our endless desert arena. Take a stroll with Niccole through a few quintessential winter hikes all accomplished in less than five hours and each very close to town.

Wasson Peak is a New Year’s favorite.

For many Tucsonans, it is a tradition to scale this peak on Jan. 1. The highest peak in the Tucson Mountains, Wasson Peak boasts magnificent 360-degree views of Tucson from the summit.

This trek is comprised of rocky switchbacks that get increasingly steeper as you hike to the top. With towering saguaros, the views here are unmated by any others on the west side. Leading up to Wasson Peak, King Canyon Trail is usually packed with outdoor enthusiasts every season except the summer because the weather is perfect.

This can be an out-and-back adventure or a loop from the parking lot, to the west via King Canyon Trail and back down the unmarked trail on the east side (opposite King Canyon).

to picnic and enjoy the ancient art on the high rock faces above. This entire trip takes between three to five hours to complete with nearly 2,000 feet of elevation gain in 3.25 miles (full hike is 6.5 miles). To get here, follow Gates Pass Road through the winding mountains until you reach Kinney Road. Turn right and park in the lot marked K24. (Wasson can also be accessed from the Sweetwater Trail in the Sweetwater Preserve. This is a 3.4-mile hike one way.)

Located in Romero Canyon of the Santa Catalina Mountains, Romero Pools is one of Oro Valley’s finest hiking destinations. The Romero Canyon Trail will prove to be a great workout without a total body punishment or remorse (unless you try to take it on mid-summer at noon).

This short-yet-steep trek promises great rewards with gorgeous canyon views and an ever-changing landscape along the way until finally reaching the cascading pools. This trail begins in the Catalina State Park parking lot near a sandy wash and leads through the scenery of the flat desert floor before hitting steep and sandy switchbacks.

There are myriads of saguaro that are hundreds of years old, and many tall and fallen saguaro skeletons, which are interesting in their own right. Tucson Mountain Park is beautiful during the winter months with its majestic desert scenery, washes and hills.

To get to Tucson Mountain Park, head out west on Speedway Boulevard until it turns into Gates Pass Road.

These trails begin on either side of the winding road and continue all the way down Kinney Road. Tucson Mountain Park is an extensive network of trails. It is best to get a map and plan your hike—as many of the trails are unmarked.

State Park will be on the east side of Oracle.

Starr Pass Trail system is in one of Tucson’s most gorgeous areas.

It overlooks tall and dense forest of Cholla cacti that look like the desert’s coral reefs with wiry ocotillos dispersed between them. Starr Pass is the park’s eastern entrance, which is very close to the resort and not far from downtown.

This trail is much less challenging than the Wasson or Romero Pools trails.

Starr Pass is popular with mountain bikers and hikers, as well as trail runners. Starr Pass is an 8-mile loop that is fairly easy and only takes about three hours to complete. It winds in and out of other trails that are equally as impressive. To get to the trail, take 36th Street west. There are trailheads at ends of 36th Street, Clearwell Road and Starr Pass Resort.

Want to know what the prize was valued at? $9,000! And it wasn’t even that great of a trip. You shouldn’t even be taxed on a trip, but that is the U.S. Government for you! If you find 50 cents on the ground they will want their cut. So please make sure that whatever contest you are entering is worth it since you’ll be getting a 1099 in the mail come January.

Officer Darren Wilson, who was doing his job and who was cleared by the grand jury, has resigned and will not get one penny severance pay. Meanwhile, Michael Brown’s siblings will get fully paid college tuitions. Don’t tell me crime doesn’t pay.

Regarding a “Sound Off” post in the December issue regarding Barack and Michelle Obama losing or surrendering their law licenses. Here is another case of an overdose of “faux news” or believing every word of a chain email you’ve received. Maybe checking some facts may help.

It isn’t the judicial system that is at fault. It is state law that in a capital murder case where the death penalty is on the table, the penalty phase has to be decided by a jury not a judge. So blame the jury for taking so long in this case. And too it has been sensationalized by the media.

Introduction to Racewalking Offered

Racewalking is a great sport. It’s great for cardiovascular fitness, excellent for strengthening the upper and lower body and, as any racewalker will tell you, it’s sexy to watch! When done correctly, it uses as many calories as running. It, however, avoids the jarring of the joints and spine, and is a sport where you can compete as soon as you learn the technique.

Arizona Senior Olympics is hosting a free racewalking workshop at 11 a.m.

Friday, Feb. 6, at Steele Indian School Park in Phoenix. At the workshop, participants will learn the basic rules of racewalking, as used by the Olympians, as well as how to improve technique and

simply get a better workout. This clinic is also for those who want to learn to walk efficiently and avoid injury while increasing their workout.

Park in the small parking lot upon entering the Seventh Street entrance to Steele Indian School Park and meet instructor Ellie Kallal. The entrance is located just north of Indian School Road, on the west side of Seventh Street. Wear comfortable clothing—shorts or tights if you want to qualify for the state games— and flexible running shoes. Walking shoes are too rigid. Bring water. Everyone is welcome!

Consumer Reports Says: ‘Get Off Your Butt’

ccording to a recent issue of Consumer Reports, sitting in a chair all day isn’t healthy. Australian researchers confirmed this.

They studied more than 222,000 people and found that those who sit for eight to 12 hours a day are 15 percent more likely to die—from any cause—in the next 2.8 years than people who sit for four or fewer hours per day. “Sitting for more than 11 hours a day increases that risk to 40 percent.” So what can we do about it?

Stand Former NASA Director of Life Sciences Joan Vernikos, author of “Sitting Kills, Moving Heals,” studied the negative effects of minimal gravity on astronauts. She says that all it takes to counteract the damage caused by sitting is to stand every 30 minutes. Here’s a tip to help: Put your water bottle, TV remote or other items you use often,

across the room as a reminder to get up every half hour. Each time you get up, congratulate yourself on doing something good for your health!

Stretch When you are sitting, try stretching to increase your circulation and decrease tension in your muscles. Neck rolls, shoulder shrugs and leg extensions are just a few of the ways you can ease those achy muscles. Good stretching will help to minimize the damage of sitting for long periods. Joanna Coles, editor in chief of Cosmopolitan Magazine, works most of the day at a treadmill desk designed here in Arizona. These desks are becoming popular because of the negative aspects associated with sitting all day. That may be a little too extreme for many, but now that you know that sitting for long periods is actually damaging your body, the best advice you can get is to “Get off your butt!”
