resh and stylish Yxta Cocina brings life to its little corner of the Arts District on Central Avenue and Sixth Street for 10 years with authentic Mexican dishes and an extensive tequila selection. Part of Jesse Gomez and Jose Acevedo’s Cocinas y Calaveras Restaurant group, which also includes the four Mercado locations.

Mercado Taqueria in Studio City and Maradentro in Brentwood, Yxta’s brick and beveled glass interior is lined with the works of contemporary Mexican artists whose canvases are as colorful as the restaurant’s well-crafted dishes.

Tacos with handmade tortillas, slow-cooked carnitas, mouth-watering mole and fresh guacamole are just a few of the staples that have made Yxta a neighborhood favorite since opening in 2009. However, this isn’t just your abuelita’s traditional Mexican food. The creative kitchen is full of surprises for diners who want a healthy, fresh update to their favorite dishes. Try the Mexican Kale Salad with candied pepitas and cotija-pesto bread crumbs, or the grilled salmon in cilantro pesto for something that will make your palate sing. Cilantro lime rice, chipotle mashed potatoes, or grilled corn all make the perfect sides to round out an incredible meal. Finish your dinner with the chef’s signature flan or Mexican bread pudding with churro ice cream, called capirotada.

In addition to a careful selection of Mexican and local beers and eight lovely wines, the bar has its sights laser-focused on great tequila. Yxta’s more than 55 premium silver, reposado and añejo tequilas and mezcals give seasoned aficionados a dazzling array of new tastes to try. ou know you’ve reached legend status when your restaurant’s signature item is so good that people simply refer to it as the #19 – tender pastrami, coleslaw, Swiss cheese and tangy Russian dressing on mind-blowing rye bread. It’s perfection between two slices.

Since founder Al Langer created this sandwich masterpiece, it has become one of those storied L.A. traditions that is passed down from generation to generation. The pastrami at Langer’s Delicatessen is known world-wide, and is consistently ranked among the best in the country.

This family-owned Jewish deli will celebrate its 72nd anniversary in June. When Langer’s first opened, there were about a dozen seats. Today there are 135, though the vintage appeal has remained virtually unchanged – wood paneling, upholstered booths, and coveted counter stools.

Many of the friendly servers have worked here for decades, becoming part of the Langer’s family.

In true deli fashion, the menu here is epic, starting with breakfast favorites like corned beef, lox and cream cheese and a chicken liver omelet.

There are heavenly cheese blintzes, golden potato pancakes and soul-warming matzo ball soup. Specials feature grilled liver and onions, roast brisket and a half-dozen cold fish plates.

Langer’s still has soda fountain favorites such as egg creams, chocolate phosphate, root beer floats and sundaes. You’ll want to save room for dessert when the options include apple pie with brandy sauce, rice custard, noodle kugel and cheesecake.

From humble beginnings to a thriving business, the corner of Seventh and Alvarado streets has become the historic Langer’s Square.

he skyline of Downtown Los Angeles is among the most iconic and familiar in the world, thanks in part to one building in particular: the US Bank Tower. With its distinctive stepped design and crown-shaped top, it was until recently the tallest building west of the Mississippi.

Residing just below that famous crown, on the 71st floor, at 950 feet above street level, is a jewel: 71Above Restaurant and Skylounge.

Riding the express elevators up to the 71st floor, it’s hard not to feel a sense of anticipation. The doors open into an intimate foyer. As you’re led into the airy main dining room, nothing can prepare you for the vista with the floor-to-ceiling windows revealing hundreds of square miles of the city below and the ocean shimmering at its edge — those views are reflected in the polished glass walls of the wine rooms behind you.

Dining tables hug the windows along the edge of the room, large upholstered booths anchor the center, and wherever you sit, there’s always that view. For the ultimate in exclusivity, two “Chefs Tables” are set right in front of where the action is—the open kitchen. And while it would be easy to rely on the views alone to keep customers coming in, owner Emil Eyvazoff has built a restaurant that wows the senses in every other way, with a world-class food, wine and bar program.

Leading the kitchen is Executive Chef Javier Lopez, who oversees a menu that is as diverse as the city it serves, with influences from cuisines across the globe. A threecourse prix-fixe dinner ($78 per person) starts with an amuse that offers a thrilling glimpse of the flavors to come. The first course might be a plump oyster, luxuriously poached in champagne, bathed in Béarnaise sauce, and topped with uni and caviar. Or perhaps a green garlic soup with crème frâiche, sweet garlic, potato and smoked trout roe, a dish that

manages to be creamy and luscious while also tangy and savory.

For the second course, when it’s in season, the White Asparagus is a dazzling complex dish of sweet white asparagus, rich spicy XO sauce, uni aioli and crunchy sea beans. A luxurious scallop might be the choice for the third course, sharing space with heirloom carrot, coconut, curry, almond and chile de Árbol, in an ode to Thai flavors that still feels uniquely L.A. and familiar.

Save room for dessert, as an excellent pastry program rounds out the menu. A recent addition is a Honey Custard, topped with yuzu gelée, pine nut brittle, freeze dried and fresh mandarin, and matcha marshmallows—it’s as playful and delicious as it sounds. Splurge on a wine pairing from lead sommelier Catherine Morel, for $48, or simply pick a bottle or glass from the extensive wine list.

Lunch at 71Above is a two-course prix-fixe for $35 that offers Downtown business people a perfect place to entertain clients or to join co-workers for a special meal that while feeling luxurious is a remarkably good value.

And visitors to Los Angeles can enjoy the spectacular views of the city before exploring the neighborhoods they see from the restaurant.

One of the best-kept secrets is the bar and lounge at 71Above. Cozy up to the bar and order a perfectly crafted cocktail from the extensive program of classic and signature drinks. There’s even an exceptional value bar burger that comes “view included.” If you time it well, you might catch one of Southern California’s spectacular sunsets, before settling in to dinner at 71Above, or ordering bites from the bar menu.

ngelenos looking for an authentic taste of Mandarin and Szechuan cuisine head to Plum Tree Inn. For decades, this favorite Chinatown eatery has become a mainstay for everyone from Downtown workers to residents to tourists.

Located on a bustling stretch of Broadway, Plum Tree is centrally located and even boasts its own convenient parking lot. The attractive, contemporary space features an inviting dining room with airy artwork on the walls and a stunning dragon sculpture hanging from the ceiling. The restaurant also offers a cozy bar for a pre-dinner glass of wine or a cocktail.

The food, of course, is the main attraction.

The vast menu features all the classics like panfried noodles and minced chicken in lettuce cup to mushu pork and orange chicken. But there’s also a selection of house specialties that are not to be missed. Among the favorites are spicy crispy prawns, the lion’s head, the tender scallops in lemon sauce, and the Kung Pao Three Delicacies with shrimp, fish filet and scallops sauteed with the restaurant’s famous Szechuan sauce. ant a taste of L.A. history? How about a 45 cent cup of coffee? Incredibly, you can find them both at the same place, a block away from Union Station, at Philippe, The Original.

In 1908, Philippe Mathieu opened what would become one of the city’s oldest restaurants, and was credited with creating the first French dipped sandwich a decade later. Like many great discoveries, this one was an accident, as Mathieu inadvertently dropped a sliced French roll into a roasting pan filled with cooking juices. A good-natured customer, an LAPD officer, agreed to take the sandwich anyway, soggy roll and all. He loved it so much that he returned the next day with friends, asking for the same thing. The rest is culinary history.

Today, six people involved with Philippe’s are descendants of the family that brought the restaurant to the area in 1927. Freeway construction forced it to move from Aliso Street to its current location in 1951, where it has welcomed diners with its signature sawdust-covered floor and long communal tables for more than 50 years.

Hearty breakfasts are served daily until 10:30 a.m. Philippe’s offers several delicious versions of the French Dip, including pastrami, roasted pork, leg of lamb, turkey, ham and roast beef. They’re all served on freshly baked crusty French rolls, which can be single-dipped or double-dipped. Add one of the tasty side dishes, such as tangy coleslaw, potato salad, macaroni salad or the signature eggs pickled in beet juice, and you’ve got a classic L.A. meal.

Instantly recognizable by the charming storefront that has remained unchanged for decades, Fugetsu-do is known for specializing in Japanese confections, namely rice cakes (mochi) and sweet bean-filled rice cakes (manju).

his bastion of French country cuisine is a Los Angeles original. Taix is that rare place that possesses both three generations of customers and staff members. Known for their kindness and dedication, servers regularly give impromptu tours of the memorabilia.

The Taix family’s roots go back to the HautesAlpes in southern France, where they were third and fourth generation sheepherders and bakers. In the late 1800s, they opened a hotel in the French Quarter of Downtown Los Angeles. In 1927, a restaurant debuted on the bottom floor of the hotel, and 35 years later that restaurant moved to its current location a chalet-like icon that attracts city politicos, businessmen, couples looking for a little romance, late-night hipsters and Francophiles who can’t get enough of the region’s cuisine. It’s just five minutes from the heart of Downtown in Echo Park, with inexpensive valet parking for meals.

t. Patrick’s Day may have passed, but that doesn’t mean you should forget the friendly neighborhood Irish pubs when looking for a place to meet up with friends and family.

Limericks Tavern, a modern gastropub that serves Irish and American comfort food, recently opened in the heart of the Downtown Financial District (its fourth location in Los Angeles) and offers a welcoming, refined atmosphere with bar and table seating.

Get things going with one of Limerick Tavern’s starters. The menu includes a bevy of appetizers, everything from scallop sliders and calamari to traditional chicken wings and poutine. There’s even Irish nachos.

If you’re looking for something heartier, Limericks has a wide selection of entrees.

There are a variety of sandwiches, among them the chicken club, steak sandwich and the BLTA. Or go for a plate with options including shrimp linguine, braised short ribs and Scottish salmon.

Of course, it wouldn’t be an Irish-style gastropub without corned beef and cabbage. Everything is made fresh daily.

Close out a meal with one of Limericks’ desserts; try New York cheesecake, chocolate mousse or bread pudding.

Naturally, Limericks Tavern has a wide selection of beers on tap—there are more than 60, and the options are both familiar and surprising.

Limerick’s is a great place to gather with co-workers for happy hour. It runs daily from 3-7 p.m. and 10 p.m. to close, and there are numerous specials including a buy one, get one for $1 beer option, and $5 well drinks.

In Downtown, Public School 213 goes beyond the general gastropub idea to deliver a diverse and eclectic selection of beer and food, making it a great spot for weekend brunch or a post-work stop with friends.

Head to the Financial District restaurant and enjoy a rotating seasonal menu with items such as a PB&J burger, roasted beet and goat cheese salad, and bacon cheddar tater tots.

The gastropub stands out for its extensive craft beer list, with around two dozen rotating options ranging from Germany’s Weihenstephaner to California selections from brewers such as Stone and Lagunitas. There are always specials on tap, including limited releases, so be sure to see what’s on the menu.

The beer goes down well with Public School’s lunch and dinner selections. There are skirt steak tacos, hand-tossed pizzas and plenty of large shared plates for a group. Defying the stereotype of bar food, there are a number of healthy options, with quinoa salads, Brussels sprouts, and gluten-free choices such as steak frites.

Then there’s “Recess,” Public School 213’s daily happy hour (starting at 3 p.m.), with drink specials and small plates including ahi tuna poke, and twists on classic bar food such as crispy naked wings and buffalo cauliflower.

French roses, white wines from Brazil, New Zealand and California, and, befitting a steakhouse, an extensive list of reds. That is split between Californian Cabernet Sauvignons and spicy, strong Malbecs and Pinot Noirs from South America. Keeping the dessert choices in mind, the restaurant also has French and Portuguese port and ice wine.

H&H Steakhouse is also a great spot for private events and special occasions, with three separate spaces—the Lacador Dining Room, the Fireplace Room and the Wine Private Room— that can be booked for a personal or business gathering. The wood floors and plush chairs, along with a modernist aesthetic, gives the new arrival a look that is distinct from most smoky steakhouses.

Downtown’s Seventh Street corridor is home to a diverse mix of dining options. H&H Steakhouse stands out as a fresh addition. n recent years Seventh Street has emerged as a sort of “Restaurant Row” in Downtown Los Angeles. Now there’s a new addition to the busy and eclectic dining hub. H&H Steakhouse opened in March, serving up organic meats done churrasco style, along with other Brazilian food.

H&H Steakhouse specializes in Southern Brazilian cuisine. Owner Henrique Huyer has crafted a modern, large steakhouse where the focus is on all-you-can-eat options. The focus of the family-owned business is organic, grass-fed meat.

Huyer spent a decade working at the meat emporium Fogo de Chao, and has capitalized on that knowledge and experience to bring Downtown Los Angeles the best in Brazilian barbecue from Rio Grande de Sul. That means, whether at lunch or dinner, you pay one price, and the gracious servers continuously come by offering premium meats such as filet mignon, lamb chops, pork ribs, rib eye and chicken.

The warm, welcoming space also has a selection of enticing sides, including cheese bread, fried polenta, garlic mashed potatoes, and golden bananas. H&H Steakhouse takes care to offer crispy and sweet complements to the richness of the meat.

Along with the meat, H&H Steakhouse offers a selection of lighter options, including a large Brazilian sea bass. There is also an extensive and “bottomless” salad bar stocked from gluten-free, organic, vegan and vegetarian items.

In addition to expected greens there are fresh Brazilian ingredients such as papaya and other fruits.

If you don’t have much time or just want a snack, H&H Steakhouse has a wide range of appetizers available at the bar, including Brazilian-style empanadas stuffed with cheese, tomatoes and oregano, and gluten-free cheese breads. Pair that with some crispy polenta topped with parmesan cheese or picadinho bagual and a glass of wine.

The dessert menu has Brazilian flan, along with fruit-based treats including mousse de maracujá, made with passion fruit, and a papaya cream that is topped with black currant liqueur.

The beverage program is also full of familiar and exotic options. Some of the most unique offerings are the Brazilian sodas, including Gaurana and homemade coconut water.
