Historic Chocolate Shop Up For Sale

A

hidden piece of Los Angeles history could receive a facelift in the near future.

The Dutch Chocolate Shop was put on the market by its anonymous owner last week, opening the door for a refurbishment at the 105-year-old space. Located on the ground floor of a building on Sixth Street near Broadway, the space is notable for its striking brown-hued tile finishing, including a collection of large tile murals by artist Ernest Batchelder. The murals depict Dutch women at work, as well as images of ships, windmills and other features of the Dutch countryside.

The shop primarily sold hot chocolate during its heyday and most recently held a small electronics store. The Los Angeles Times first reported the story. According to The Times, the owner of the building is seeking $12 million for the property.

City Triples Illegal Dumping Fines

ly increased following a vote by the Los Angeles City Council last week. The city council approved an ordinance that triples fines for illegal dumping on Wednesday, Oct. 23. The new ordinance raises fines to $250 for the first violation, and $500 for the second violation. A third violation can be bumped up to a misdemeanor, alongside a $1,000 fine and possible jail time. The ordinance also allows the city to charge for cleanup costs for illegal dump sites, as well as up to 40% of any administrative costs attributed to scheduling a cleanup. “If you do business in LA, you are, by law, required to have trash-collection services, and if you don’t and you commit misdemeanor illegal dumping ... you will be subject to a $1,000 fine or six months in jail,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said during a press conference. Garcetti said that close to 80% of all trash found on city streets are the result of illegal dumping, 75% of which is linked to local businesses.

Close to 40% of illegal dumping, according to city officials, occurs in Downtown Los Angeles. The new ordinance went into effect immediately.

Leasing Changes for At Mateo, Soylent Moves to Row DTLA

T

he Arts District’s At Mateo project has experienced a shake up. The office and retail campus is losing one of its main tenants, meal replacement beverage company Soylent, with another compa-

ny opting to gobble up the leftover space.

Last month Soylent announced that it is leaving its 29,000-square-foot offices for 14,000 square feet to the southwest at Row DTLA. It’s undetermined when they will move into the new space. Its former home will be taken over by Spotify, which is expanding its footprint at the 550 S. Mateo St. facility. Meanwhile, the University of Southern California’s Roski School of Art and Design, which currently occupies 15,000 square feet at At Mateo, have leased up an additional 10,000 square feet.

The new space will house the school’s entire graduate programming. The school expects to take over the new space in January 2020, and the additional area will see the Roski School host art exhibitions.

Rally for Immigrants Rights At State Historic Park

his weekend, look back on the impact of Proposition 187 with a free rally and concert at Los Angeles State Historic Park. Rally for Our Rights: We Are 25 Years Beyond Prop 187 takes place on Saturday, Nov. 9 and examines the political fight over immigration in the state that came to a head in 1994. The ballot initiative prohibited undocumented immigrants from programs such as public education and non-emergency services, but after voters approved it, a federal court struck it down as unconstitutional. The event runs

from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the park at 1245 N. Spring St. and will include remarks from California Secretary of State Alex Padilla, former State Senator and current Los Angeles City Council District 14 candidate Kevin de León, County Supervisor Hilda Solis and others. The line up also includes performances from L.A.’s own Ozomatli and rapper and singer Aloe Blacc. The event is organized by a collection of labor and political activist groups. Perch LA Earns Open Table’s Best Date Night Honors

t’s old news to Downtowners that Perch LA, with its sweeping views of the Downtown, is one of the best date spots in the Central City. Now, the space is getting its due on the national stage. The reservation website OpenTable selected Perch LA as one of the nation’s “50 Best Restaurants For A Date” earlier this month. Located on the 15th floor of the Pershing Square Building at 448 S. Hill St., Perch LA serves up mouth-watering French cuisines, matched with tasty cocktails and outdoor patio dining. The restaurant was just one of three Los Angeles restaurants selected for the list, joining Castaway in Burbank and Catch LA in West Hollywood. Restaurants were selected based off of an analysis of over 12 million restaurant reviews made on the company’s platform.

PUBLIC MEETING ON THE PROPOSED CHANGE IN CONTROL AND GOVERNANCE OF GOOD SAMARITAN HOSPITAL The Attorney General is reviewing the proposed change in control and governance of Good Samaritan Hospital, a California nonprofit public benefit corporation, that operates and controls Good Samaritan Hospital, a 408 licensed bed, general acute care hospital, located in Los Angeles, California. The Affiliation Agreement is between Good Samaritan Hospital and PIH Health, Inc., a California nonprofit public benefit corporation. The proposed nonprofit hospital transaction is being reviewed as required by Corporations Code sections 5920 et seq. The terms of the proposed transaction are set forth in the written notice to the Attorney General. The written notice is available on Good Samaritan Hospital’s website at https://www.goodsam.org.

The California Attorney General will conduct a public meeting on Tuesday November 19, 2019, beginning at noon, in the Moseley-Salvatori Conference Center located at 637 Lucas St., Los Angeles, CA 90017. The purpose of the public meeting is to receive comments on the proposed change in control and governance of Good Samaritan Hospital and to consider the Health Care Impact Statement for Good Samaritan Hospital prepared by consultants engaged by the California Attorney General.

Do Not Neglect Pershing Square

D

owntown Los Angeles is expected to grow by 125,000 people by 2040, and in the meantime city leaders are placing a focus on building new and accommodating green spaces to match the expansion.

We’ve already seen some of that effort pay off. The 12-acre Grand Park, which opened in 2012, has become a destination for civic and cultural events, while the 32-acre Los Angeles State Historic Park to the north offers a massive lawn that is regularly used for music festivals. Smaller spaces, from the city’s half-acre Arts District Park to the privately developed 13,000-square-foot South Park Commons have also sprung up in recent years.

As part of the city’s plans to overhaul zoning and set guidelines for Downtown’s development by 2040, the Department of City Planning is aiming to increase green space around the Fashion District, while the two-acre First and Broadway Park is expected to break ground next year.

But with all the focus on expanding Downtown’s park stock, why has Pershing Square, the neighborhood’s most storied park, sat neglected for so long?

Located in the heart of Downtown, Pershing Square has been a gathering space for more than a century. The square underwent a redesign in 1994 that quickly grew outdated, reflecting the now-abandoned trend of communal spaces with hardscaped surfaces.

It still hosts events, including a bevy of summer concerts and film screenings, and people still gather there, but amid Downtown’s embrace of outdoor public space, it’s fallen behind the neighborhood’s other, more inviting spaces.

What makes that trend so unfortunate is that it’s not as if there isn’t a plan. The city has been pursuing a major update for the park, with the nonprofit Pershing Square Renew working to find funds via Quimby funds and general public benefits dollars. A team led by Paris-based Agence Ter won a design contest in 2016, with a concept built around “radical flatness.” But since the design was chosen, there was silence until this summer, when the Department of Recreations and Parks offered a small update that work at the park would be done in phases. However, only the first phase, demolishing the pastel colored walls on Olive Street and putting in new stairs and elevators to replace faulty escalators, has been fully funded.

The seemingly endless renovation process is unfortunate. It’s one of the city’s most important park spaces and should be treated as such.

If the city can’t handle the process, than the city should reach out to outside forces willing to help transform the five-acre space.

We’ve seen it happen before. The aforementioned Grand Park was funded primarily through a public-private partnership between the County of Los Angeles and Related Cos., part of the latter’s contract to build The Grand. The Music Center now runs the space and organizes a litany of popular community events.

Pershing Square has long been Downtown’s Central Park, and as Downtown booms, the city should explore all options to bring it up to date for a new crop of Downtown residents.

I enjoyed the comment by Judith Hansen in response to the editorial re Proposition HHH criticism. That is right to the point. I would not replace the Mayor and council; just get them to recognize that the homeless question should be the most important and immediately addressed by other than wasting time. Minimum space is all that is necessary to help the unfortunate, not $400,000 luxury units. Stop talking and start acting.

City Rolls Out New Zoning Proposals to Accommodate Future Growth DTLA 2040 Plan Anticipates a Community That Will See Its Population More Than Double, Amid Other Major Changes

By Sean P. Thomas and Nicholas Slayton ast week the Department of City Planning released new proposed zoning rules for Downtown Los Angeles. The package of proposals is part of the wider Downtown Community Plan, also known as DTLA 2040, and seeks to anticipate and prepare for a period of phenomenal growth in the Central City.

On Thursday, Oct. 31 the department outlined plans to nearly double the land area in Downtown where housing can be built, as well as increase mobility across Downtown. Revised zoning regulations would issue new designations for much of the eastern and southern neighborhoods in Downtown, which city officials believe will allow for easier development in those predominately industrial areas.

The biggest shift will be the removal of parking requirements for new residential projects in Downtown. The Department of City Planning expects that removing parking minimums will allow for greater housing density, and provide environmental bonuses.

“For decades, we’ve prioritized shelter for cars over people by requiring parking minimums in Downtown,” Director of Planning Vince Bertoni said in a prepared statement.

“All of that changes today with the new policies that we’ve laid out in this plan. We’re removing onerous regulatory requirements

that have either slowed or impeded development — unlocking in the process the potential for new housing and jobs.”

Currently, developers who hope to build in Downtown are required to provide a certain amount of parking spaces based off of the building’s use. Downtown would be the first neighborhood in Los Angeles to nix parking minimums.

The elimination of those minimums also encourages investing in multi-modal transportation options, according to Hillary Norton, executive director of FASTLinkDTLA and a member of the California Transportation Commission.

The Department of City Planning also notes that by eliminating parking minimums, it would mean developers could build on narrower lots as they would not have to build large podiums which typically house parking and require space for ramps and stalls. That would allow for more infill in Downtown, opening up sites that were previously too small for large housing construction.

The proposed changes to the zoning map come as the Downtown is prepping for even more growth over the next two decades. Downtown currently has an estimated 80,000 residents. If the DTLA2040 projects come true, the local population will climb to 200,000 over the next two decades, as the area sees the addition of 70,000 housing

units and 55,000 jobs.

The report projects that 20% of the entire city’s growth will take place on the 1% of Los Angeles land that Downtown covers.

Per the new zoning rules, there would be new base allotments for how dense developers can build. The city is also hoping to incentivize developers by allowing greater density for those that offer community bonuses and more affordable housing.

The effort is part of the city’s wider re:code LA initiative. The project was sparked in 2013 to update the city’s aging zoning structure.

The city still operates under guidelines first approved in 1946, which has failed to keep up with the needs of the city.

The DTLA Community Plan is the first part of that project to be released and replaces existing plans for the Central City and Central City East. The new zoning rules follow the July release of a draft general plan land use designation map and draft policy document.

Mapping the Impact The document details what parts of Downtown is expected to experience the heaviest amount of development; the southern and eastern portions of Downtown are seen as likely boom areas.

A new community plan is not necessary for Downtown’s growth to continue, but would help streamline and clear up things, said Dan Rosenfeld, a land-use consultant

who has worked in both the public and private sector.

“The reason we need one is that it would be nice if there were rules. I’m a developer.

I know my colleagues and I would like public policy where we know what we can build and what we can’t,” Rosenfeld said. “How tall?

How dense? The more prescriptive the public policy is, the more the development community will deliver.”

Rosenfeld said that developers in Downtown currently have to request spot changes and zoning variances on individual projects, which can be costly and chew up time. A Downtown with neighborhoods more readily zoned for hybrid industrial or residential purposes would allow developers to avoid those hurdles, he noted.

The new zoning rules are expected to reduce general plan amendments, sometimes referred to as “spot zoning,” where developers hope to get exceptions in certain zoning areas to build specific types of individual properties. Per the Department of City Planning, the majority of those requests center on the Arts District, which is currently zoned for industrial uses. Under the proposed revisions, that area would be designated as hybrid industrial. Building Up Downtown An Update on Noteworthy Developments in Downtown

By Sean P. Thomas and Nicholas Slayton owntown has experienced an unprecedented development boom over the past two decades, with new high-rise residential and commercial developments ushering in a new era of the Central City.

That growth is only getting started. A collection of new parks, community spaces, office buildings and residential projects are currently in the works in Downtown, with some expected to open next year, and others two-three years out.

Los Angeles Downtown News is providing updates on standout Downtown projects.

The first five are detailed in this issue, with five more to be published next week.

Name: First and Broadway Park Budget: $28 million Developer: The City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks Location: Hill and First Street Projected Opening: Winter 2022 Key Details: The two-acre site that will eventually hold the park is within walking distance of most of the Civic Center and Historic Core, and will include a three-story edifice that will house a restaurant, a bar, a rooftop patio and dining terrace.

On the ground floor, will be a coffee shop and space for outdoor dining. The park is designed in a way to provide a link between the Regional Connector station on Spring and Second streets, and the rest of the Civic Center.

The Latest: In August, Council District 14, along with the Department of Recreation and Parks released the latest renderings for the long-gestating park, which included the addition of more greenery, trees, and grass.

The meeting included gathering insight on the final details for the park, including any potential art components and a new a new statue gifted to the city by the Mexican Consulate.

If all goes according to plan, First and Broadway Park could break ground as early as Winter 2020.

Name: The Grand Budget: $1 billion

Developer: Related Cos. Location: Bunker Hill, on the southwest corner of First Street and Grand Avenue Projected Opening: 2021 Key Details: It took 15 years, but the Frank Gehry-designed mixed use development The Grand, finally broke ground in February, with construction crews fast at work to meet the projected estimated 2021 opening date.

The project includes a 20-story building with a 309-room Equinox Hotel and a 39-story building that will hold 436 rental units, 20% of which is set aside for affordable housing.

The Grand will also hold a 430-seat movie theater, a restaurant and other retail offerings.

The project is designed as a new anchor for Grand Avenue, joining institutions like the Music Center, the Colburn School and The Broad. The Grand will feature a public plaza that will include permanent and temporary art installations.

The Latest: Currently, the foundation of the project’s first tower is beginning to peak out from the top of the large construction pit, with crews working to finalize the site foundation.

Name: Perla Budget: Undisclosed Developer: SCG America, a subsidiary of the Shanghai Construction Group Location: 400 S. Broadway Projected Opening: Early fall 2020 Key Details: The Perla project is not only the first high rise to be built in the Historic Core since the start of the development boom, but also the neighborhood’s first new largescale condominium building, with 450 new residential units soon to come online once construction is complete.

Designed by the architecture firm CallisonRTKL, Perla will rise up 35 stories, including a 10-story podium. A large 10-story atrium is being built inside of the podium as well. Plans also call for 7,000 square feet of ground-floor retail and landscaped amenities decks on top of the podium and the tower.

Name: Southern California Flower Market Budget: Undisclosed Developers: Southern California Flower Growers Inc. Location: Seventh and Wall streets Projected Opening: Undetermined Key Details: Designed by the architecture firm Brooks + Scarpa, the project would bring a 15-story tower next to the historic Flower Market, replacing one of the two current buildings on the site. The tower will hold 323 residential units, plus nearly 140,000 square feet of commercial, wholesale and event space.

Originally built in 1909 on Los Angeles Street, the flower market moved to Wall Street in 1923, where it has remained since.

The market is now owned by a collection of descendants of the market’s original owner.

The flower market will remain in operation during and after construction.

The Latest: Last week, the Los Angeles City Council’s planning and land use management committee approved the project’s environmental impact report, in the process denying two appeals, one brought by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and the other from the Coalition for Responsible Equitable Economic Development.

The AHF’s appeal targeted the amount of affordable housing in the project, but the committee found that the project’s plans were submitted prior to the passage of Measure JJJ in 2016. The measure sought to in-

crease the amount of affordable and low-income units in new developments.

A ground breaking for the project has not been determined.

Name: Terasaki Budokan Budget: $25 million Developer: Little Tokyo Service Center.

Location: 237 S. Los Angeles St. Projected Opening: Winter 2022 Key Details: The two-story community and recreation center was originally proposed in the mid-1990s, but only broke ground in 2017.

The central part of the space is a two-story gymnasium with space for two basketball courts. Other aspects of the 39,000-squarefoot facility, designed by Gruen Associates, include an outdoor stage and auditorium, a children’s playground, rooftop terrace, garden and multipurpose rooms for the community.

The project is named for Dr. Paul Terasaki, a major donor to the facility.

The Terasaki Budokan will also include underground parking for up to 60 cars.

The Latest: Crews have topped out the lowslung building, with the structure’s frame fully in place.

The Little Tokyo Service Center is continuing to fundraise past the $25 million construction budget. The draft also makes a push to increase live/work developments in neighborhoods like the Fashion District and the Arts District, that currently are zoned for more commercial and manufacturing uses.

The Arts District, which has experienced some of the most pronounced growth in Downtown over the past two decades, is currently designated as heavy manufacturing and zoned for industrial uses. By transitioning the designation to hybrid industrial, officials believe that more mixed-use and live/ work projects will be able to be built in the area without having to request spot changes or general plan amendments.

In addition, the proposal also calls for new rules around Skid Row to allow for more affordable housing, according to the department.

DTLA 2040 proposes that the core of the community, along Fifth, Sixth and Seventh streets east of San Pedro Street, be limited to affordable housing. Currently there is no limit to what can be built, or requirements for af-

fordable housing, within that area. The new rules would create limitations aimed at providing housing for lower-income Angelenos.

Housing advocates have taken issue with the new proposal, stating that more of the neighborhood should be earmarked for low-incoming housing.

The new zoning plans also include design overlays for residential neighborhoods with distinct cultural characteristics, such as Little Tokyo.

This draft is the first part of a wider process before any new zoning plans are adopted.

The Department of City Planning will next release a draft environmental report on its proposed plans, which would then be reviewed and scrutinized in a series of public community meetings. The department will revise the rules based on those meetings, before the Los Angeles City Council decides on whether to adopt the changes. The department anticipates adoption by the end of 2020.

Low-Key Staging and Impeccable Timing Helps Mike Birbiglia’s Latest One-Man Show Build to an Honest and Satisfying Finale

By Jeff Favre owntown’s Ahmanson Theatre has begun this season with back-toback self-deprecating solo performances by male comedians joking about family issues.

Despite those surface similarities, they are miles apart in tone and style, but both deliver thoroughly thoughtful, wonderfully satisfying results.

While Latin History for Morons highlighted John Leguizamo’s chameleon-like skills at portraying dozens of character changes, in-your-face bawdy humor and frenetic pacing, Mike Birbiglia’s autobiographical The New One is akin to having coffee with your pal, that is if your friend is nonstop funny and endlessly fascinating.

Directed with a gentle hand by Birbiglia’s frequent collaborator Seth Barrish, the 80-minute intermission-free New One, which appeared on Broadway before its recent tour, runs through Nov. 24.

Though it’s closer to a long-format stand-up routine, Birbiglia doesn’t feel out of place in a theater, in large part because his monologue is tight, structured and

builds into a single cohesive tale that you can easily picture being performed by a full cast.

The plot may center on Birbiglia’s becoming a father — and his fervent desire not to — but the story’s lynchpin is furniture.

From his first couch — an abandoned piece of junk — to the beloved ambiguously colored favorite place for his wife and him to share thousands of hours laughing and crying, the couch (portrayed by a solitary simple wood stool) is his symbol for comfort and consistency.

His place on the couch, as well as his entire way of life, is threatened by his wife when she says she wants a child.

Birbiglia recites his list of seven reasons he doesn’t want one (it’s actually much longer), including that he thinks there shouldn’t be any more children, anywhere, ever. Don’t worry, he says children already born can finish their time being young — but that’s it.

The list touches on his sleep disorder, which 15 years ago caused him to jump through a second-floor window, and

which became the source for his first solo show Sleepwalk With Me. Now, he sleeps in a zipped sleeping bag while wearing mittens.

Somehow, his wife convinces him they should try to become parents, which is when things really begin to unravel for him while becoming increasingly funny for everyone listening.

Birbiglia’s timing and delivery are impeccable. Few-second pauses before unexpected punchlines, and his mumbles of hysterical asides prove he’s aware of how to get the most out of the material.

He also adds short poems penned by his wife that are poignant punctuations to a few scenes.

Birbiglia has called Barrish’s direction invisible, and it is low-key, but the blocking adds a bit of action that enhances the pacing of the story. Likewise, Beowulf Boritt’s minimal set design offers one impressive surprise. Also, Aaron Copp’s lighting accents some of the most tender and intense moments, bathing Birbiglia in deep reds and blues.

What makes The New One work so well,

though, is its honesty. Birbiglia never tries to make anything epic or insane, so almost anyone old enough to have a child — or to wrestle with the choice — can identify with his feelings and actions.

There’s only one story he admits being embarrassed to tell, but he unloads the unflattering anecdote because he believes many men are so horrible that he is “decent” by comparison.

The other impressive attribute is its length. There’s not a line that feels expendable. Everything fits, and its ending is as satisfying as its open.

Like Leguizamo’s latest effort, a filmed version of The New One will soon appear on Netflix, but there’s no way it will capture the way Birbiglia plays off the audience, and it will sorely lack the knowing laughs of hundreds who have been in similar situations.

This is a story that earned its place at a prestigious theater, and it’s one that should be shared by as many people as possible.

Days of Future Past with a New Downtown Pop-Up Neotropolis Bar Recreates the Cyberpunk Aesthetic With a Multi-Level Bar with Sci-Fi Characters

That’s the science-fiction aesthetic that imagined a near-future ruled by corporations, dominated by East Asian culture, and soaked in rain and neon. It’s the dystopian vision dreamt up in part by works such as William Gibson’s book Neuromancer and Ridley Scott’s influential film Blade Runner. The genre was anchored in Los Angeles, with images of old Art Deco buildings covered in bright neon and blunt advertisements on rainy days becoming the defining visual of the genre.

That future never came to pass, but now Angelenos can get a taste for what might have been with a new pop-up bar in Downtown. Neotropolis Bar launched on Friday, Nov. 1. Set up on three floors in the back of the Chapman Building at 750 S. Broadway, the space runs through the end of the month and mixes a nightclub feel with elements of interactive theater. A ticket costs $82.

The idea grew out of a fascination with the 1980s and its science fiction, according to creator Jared Butler, who also was one of the developers behind Wasteland Weekend, an

annual post-apocalyptic-themed festival that takes place in September in California City.

“We’re 20 years past 1999. When I grew up, 1999 was the future,” Butler told Los Angeles Downtown News at a recent media tour.

“We got there, but it wasn’t quite the future we imagined 20 years later, I thought maybe I can create that future we thought we were going to have.”

Neotropolis is the latest themed bar to arrive in Los Angeles, following the path set by spaces like the Star Wars-inspired Scum & Villainy Cantina, which started as a pop-up in Hollywood before transitioning into a permanent Hollywood Boulevard fixture. Downtown has also seen a number of Instagram friendly pop-up venues, but Butler said he wanted to create more than just a visually engaging bar, instead leaning on immersive elements and in-character staff that would bring people back.

The creative staff is quick to state the space is not a Blade Runner-themed bar. That said, the 1982 film, itself set in Downtown Los Angeles in November 2019, is a major influence on the cyberpunk aesthetic, and Neotropolis’ mix of retro-futuristic technol-

ogy and noir trappings harkens to that dark vision of the future from the 1980s.

Butler said that Downtown’s history and appearances in media made it the right location. The Neotropolis team then added custom furniture, art pieces and decorations to iron out the setting.

Neotropolis is set up in the upper mezzanine and basement of the Los Angeles Biergarten (heavy curtains separate the spaces), but the décor draws from 1930s noir, with dark wood panels, Art Deco light fixtures and old fashioned rotary phones. Those are accented with heavy amounts of neon and a series of video monitors illuminating the space with ads, designed by fabricator Mel Ho. It’s been 10 years since Matt and Kim Kim’s released their second studio album Grand, propelling the indie rock duo onto the playlists of high school student’s everywhere. Since, the pair has released four albums, but Matt and Kim fans still have a special place in their hearts for the band’s sophomore entry. In celebration of a decade of dance-ready tunes, the duo is gearing up to play the album in its entirety (plus few fan favorites) at The Novo on Thursday, Nov. 7. Expect to here the chart-topping “Daylight,” alongside favorites like “Lessons Learned” and “Good Ol’ Fashion,’ which took home a 2009 Video Music Award for Breakthrough Video. Don’t Tell Comedy describes itself as the perfect for people who love laughing and despise overpriced drinks. If that’s the case, then we’re sold. Since sprouting in a friend’s backyard in 2017, the company has grown, running shows every weekend across over 40 cities and towns. There is a show planned for Downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, Nov. 9 but there is a catch: both the location, and the comedians are revealed at noon on the same day as the show. Some heavyweights have partnered with the group, from Tom Segura, to Ali Wong and David Koechner, so you know your in for a good night. One of the most engaging and gifted pianists in the world is making a return trip to the Walt Disney Concert Hall for another evening of beautiful artistry.

Yuja Wang, who has wowed the Bunker Hill venue with her heavenly musicality and stage presence, is partnering up with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic for two evenings of high-energy classical music. On Thursday, Nov. 7 at 8 p.m. and Friday at 11 a.m., Wang will partner with the Phil to perform John Adams’“Must the Devil Have All the Good Tunes,” while Dudamel will conduct the LA Phil’s performance of Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring.” Protip: arrive at 7 p.m. on Thursday to learn a bit about the program from members of the LA Phil before the concert begins. There are artists who try their best not to rock the boat, and others who make it their sole purpose to challenge the status quo; rapper Immortal Technique falls into the later category. Born in Peru and raised in New York, Technique rose through the ranks as a battle rapper, before releasing his first album The Revolutionary Vol. 1, which featured the underground classic “Dance With the Devil.” Now a bonafide legend in hip hop, Tech hasn’t released a studio album since 2008’s The 3rd World, but is still recording new music, some of which, will be performed when the rapper brings his Middle Passage tour to The Regent Theater on Friday, Nov. 8.
