Prather Entertainment Group has partnered with Lonely Street Productions to produce shows at The Palms Theatre in Mesa. Family patriarch Tom Prather spent much of last season commuting between the Mesa theater and his full-time home in Florida. The dinner-theater mogul resolved that the enterprise would be stronger and more successful with a full-time Arizona-based management team by his side. The Prather organization will continue to play a vital role in the artistic and development side of the business, while new corporation The Palms Theatre Inc. will handle the marketing and day-to-day operations of the venue. “We have full faith and trust that The Palms Theatre Inc. will continue to deliver the same high-quality Broadway musicals, concerts and comedies that our audiences have come to enjoy over the years,” Prather said. “They

are committed to our audiences and are looking to introduce new ways to enhance the dinner-theater experience.” In addition to the popular buffet, patrons will have the opportunity to order from an a la carte menu and enhanced bar menu. Other improvements include pre-show entertainment by the new performing waitstaff, a “show-only” option that allows choice of any available seating in the theater, and deeply discounted “Cheap Seats” in the back of the venue. The Palms Theatre Inc. management team includes President and CEO Robert Shaw, founder and CEO of Lonely Street Productions with nearly 20 years of entertainment experience in the world of theater and concerts; COO Andrew Birgensmith, who joins the team from his most recent

role as president and CEO of the Tucson Symphony and 10 years as general manager of the Kansas City Symphony; and Creative Director Khris Dodge, artistic director of Lonely Street productions, former Arizona Opera orchestra manager, and versatile musician with more than 20 years’ experience playing and music directing across the United States. Season tickets are available now, with individual tickets going on sale Sept. 16. The theater is located at 5247 E. Brown Rd., Mesa. For more information call (480) 924-6260 or visit www. Grand Marshal Named for East Valley Veterans Parade Ret. Army Col. Bruce Crandall, a Medal of Honor recipient, has been named grand marshal for the 2014 East Valley Veterans Parade in Mesa. Crandall, a former public works manager for the City of Mesa, received the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military honor, from President George W. Bush in 2007 for his actions during the Battle of la Drang during the Vietnam War. During the battle, he flew 22 missions in an unarmed helicopter into enemy fire to bring ammunition and supplies, and to evacuate the wounded. In one day, Crandall and his wingman, Capt. Ed Freeman, flew for 14 and a half hours and rescued 70 wounded soldiers. Crandall and Freeman were the first helicopter pilots in any branch of military service to receive the Medal of Honor. Crandall’s heroism at the Battle of la Drang is depicted in the 1992 book “We Were Soldiers Once… And Young” and in the 2002 movie “We Were Soldiers,” in which he was portrayed by Greg Kinnear. Crandall

served as an aviation consultant during filming. By the end of the Vietnam War, Crandall had flown more than 900 combat missions and received numerous military decorations in addition to the Medal of Honor. He was inducted into the U.S. Air Force’s Gathering of Eagles in 1994, one of only seven Army aviators so honored. He was inducted into the Army Aviation Hall of Fame in 2004. The 2014 East Valley Veterans Parade will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, along Center Street in Downtown Mesa. Parade information will be available at www.evvp.org. The 2014 East Valley Veterans Parade has also named its honorary service representatives who will represent all five branches of the U.S. military. All are members of the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame. They are: Army: Col. Karl Kohlhoff, U.S. Army Reserve, Retired. Kohlhoff is a former assistant utilities manager with the City of Mesa still active in civil engineering.

I

started doing some research to find out more about the validity of a 2,000-year-old document called the Bible. Is it really an unreliable mess, due to centuries of writing, rewriting, and translation? I was surprised to learn in my personal research that what I had been told by others about the Bible wasn’t true. So this got me to reading. Reading what? The BIBLE. I was told that Romans is a good place to start, because this is the best picture of how our relationship with God is today, but I didn’t stop there. When I got to the book of Hebrews, I was blown away. This is where I learned that I had been lied to. As I read, I found that God loves me regardless of my behavior; that I have His favor and blessing, not because of what I do, but because of my faith in Jesus. This is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The lie came from living in a world where men determine who is, and who is not, acceptable to God. They say, “Look what he did. Okay, now he can’t come in, or be part of this event, or do this thing in the church,” which is the same as God also refusing to accept us based on our actions. But the Bible says something different. Hebrews is very clear about whom our Priest is and how the temple works, with all of its traditions and procedures. So here is the part where I bare my soul. I got my girlfriend pregnant. We got married later, but we weren’t allowed to get married in the church. Why? We had sinned. And I felt like God had rejected me. I was taught that sin cannot enter the Holy Place, and that the Holy Place must be kept sacred from the impurities of man. But according to the book of Hebrews, after Jesus died, He went through the temple in heaven and redeemed us all, so that we can boldly stand in God’s September 2014

presence in the Most Holy Place, free from sin and condemnation. Jesus replaced the old man-made priesthood forever. A man-made priesthood may reject me, but the High Priest, Jesus, has accepted me and called me righteous! According to 1 Corinthians 3:16, our bodies are the temple of Holy Spirit. He dwells in anyone who receives Jesus Christ, the only son of God who died for our sins, as Lord and Savior. The fear that my sin should not be allowed in the Holy Place doesn’t make sense with what we know about the Spirit; the Spirit is within me. He wouldn’t stay in me, if I were somehow tainted by sin. He wouldn’t remain with anyone, because we are all sinful on some level. So if that was true, then Christ died for nothing. Hebrews says this: Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 w let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. (Hebrews 10:19-22)

Pilgrim Lutheran Welcomes New Principal Pilgrim Lutheran School, now in its 43rd year of offering quality Christian education to Mesa families, has welcomed Jim Wade as its new principal. Wade will also teach select classes in the upper grades and oversee the music ministry of Pilgrim as choir director and organist. Wade brings more than 35 years of experience to Pilgrim, most recently serving as principal and middle school teacher at Bethany Lutheran School in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. In addition to being a school administrator, he has filled positions as staff minister, high school choir director and school counselor. His teaching career has taken him to a variety of schools in Wisconsin, California, Florida and Ohio. He is a 1979 graduate of Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota, and earned his master’s

degree in educational leadership from Florida International University in Miami, Florida, in 2005. “I’m very excited about serving the families of Pilgrim Lutheran School,” Wade said. “It’s obvious we have talented, dedicated teachers and staff members who are passionate about educating not only the minds, but also the hearts of the impressionable young people entrusted to our care. My wife, sons and I are thrilled to be a part of the Pilgrim family.” Wade, his wife, Kristen, and their two sons, Jarrod and Joel, live in Phoenix where they enjoy golf, tennis, biking, swimming and NFL Sundays. Young Marine Unit Awarded Camarena Award The East Valley Young Marine Unit was recognized by the Drug Enforcement Agency for its commitment to alcohol, tobacco and other drug and violence prevention, not just in its schools and neighborhoods but for the impact it has in Mesa, Tempe and surrounding communities. Enrique “Kiki” Camarena Award is awarded to the Young Marine Unit that best exemplifies the qualities and principles for which Camarena gave his life to keep Americans off drugs. There are more than 300 units in the program and only six units were given this award, named after a deceased DEA agent. Besides participating in Red Ribbon Week every October, all the Young Marine staff and senior Young Marines are Project Alert certified. The Project ALERT curriculum was created and tested by RAND, the nation’s leading think tank on drug policy. Developed over a 10-year period, Project ALERT addresses the pro-drug mindset of teens and effectively increases their likelihood to remain drug-free. This

curriculum gives the Young Marines the tools they need to Close the Gate on Drugs and to be able to stand in front of their peers and educate them on the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. “We at DEA were very happy and proud to find that there were young people in AZ, in Phoenix, doing such good work in reducing the demand for drugs on our streets,” said Special Agent Shannon Scheel, Phoenix Division Drug Enforcement Agency. The Young Marines is a national nonprofit 501(c)(3) youth education and service program for boys and girls, age 8 through the completion of high school. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral and physical development of its members. The program focuses on teaching the values of leadership, teamwork and selfdiscipline, so its members can live and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Parents Have School Choice for Children with Autism: Pieceful Solutions By Tracy House Kami Cothrun just wanted to give autistic children a chance to be themselves. Witnessing the frustration of parents of autistic children with traditional public schools, Cothrun saw a need for a safe and caring place for autistic children. She started Pieceful Solutions in Mesa in 2008. “For so long parents just went with their only option being the public school, and so for them to have options is crucial. “They’re relieved to know there is a place that their child can be themselves, where they are understood, not only by the teachers, but their peers, is huge. So many of our kids come with anxiety because they haven’t been able to be themselves, they’ve had to hold it together while they’re at school and then they get home and they totally crash and melt down. So many families have told me how much better their family life is...they’re not fighting the battle to get their kids to school every morning.” From humble beginnings with six students in a church portable, there are now Pieceful Solutions schools in Chandler, Mesa and Gilbert. Each school has a dedicated director. Classrooms have a maximum of 14 students, grouped by grade, age and then, also, ability. “We service the entire spectrum,” Cothrun said. “So we’ve got some students who are nonverbal who have high sensory needs and then we have students who are choice, exceptional, gifted more on the Asperger side, so we September 2014

service the whole range. The majority of our students are the higher end, but we do service both.” Learning takes place through direct and small group instruction enhanced with computer-based learning. “The biggest piece is that small group where they can get some individualized help. It really helps our kids be able to focus better. Our class sizes are small and when we break up into those smaller groups, they really get a lot more attention,” Cothrun said. Each campus provides the core subjects and the curriculum includes yoga, karate, music therapy, different specials and electives. Students have the opportunity to learn life skills such as cooking and laundry as well as social skills; each campus does community outings weekly. Occupational therapy is also available. “We service both the sensory needs of the students as well as the fine motor needs,” Cothrun explained. “We’ve got a fulltime speech/language therapist, and each campus has a fulltime speech/ language assistant. So the kids get lots of speech and language. It’s crucial.” An advocate for the autism community, Cothrun said, “The ultimate goal is to be here for the kids and to provide resources for the families.” Parents interested in more information about Pieceful Solutions are invited to call and schedule a tour of the facilities or to speak with Cothrun. Information is available at www.piecefulsolutions.com or by calling (480) 309-4792.

Parents Find Answers for Bipolar, ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, and Mood Disorders As a result of serious bipolar disorder, Tony Stephan’s wife, Debbie, committed suicide in 1994. Two of their children, Autumn and Joseph, were also diagnosed with the same illness. Tony met with physicians and therapists, and pursued numerous treatments and medications for his children, but Autumn and Joseph continued to suffer. Two years later his journey led him to the discovery of micronutrients. Working with scientists and experts, Tony created a nutritional formula and began giving it to his children. The results were nothing short of a miracle, and Autumn and Joseph have been well without medication since 1996. Now, EMPowerplusQ96 is available to benefit millions of people in more than 105 countries. Kellie Schroeder, of Mesa, has a daughter, Erin, with bipolar disorder.

“After years of doctors, medications and hospitals, hopelessness set in,” she said. “Nothing we tried was helping her to get better. Finally, like an answer to prayers, a good friend shared the EMpowerplusQ96 product with us, and we started her on it immediately.” Erin said she suffered from debilitating depression and anxiety. “At the best of times, I was barely functioning normally,” Erin said. “At the worst of times I could hardly get myself out of bed. I was so consumed with depression, I could not think rationally about my life, let alone care about myself or others. I was so consumed by my illness; I couldn’t properly socialize, even with my own family.” Kellie says her daughter is “living proof that this micronutrient does help. It has changed her life for the better.”

Margo Johnson, also of Mesa, said six family members faced challenges that ran the gamut from depression, to schizoaffective disorder, ADHD, autism and anxiety. “Things were so bad and we had dealt with them for so long...we were simply Kellie Schroeder, right, with daughter, Erin. overwhelmed,” she said. “With the EMPowerplusQ96 my and autism. September 2014

By Alison Bailin Batz Did you know the next Aroldis Chapman, Bryce Harper, Andrew McCutchen, Dustin Pedroia, Giancarlo Stanton or Mike Trout might be playing baseball in your own backyard this fall? Throughout October and November, Cubs Park in Mesa will be home to the Mesa Solar Sox, one of six Arizona Fall League (AFL) teams comprised by many of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) elite young prospects—some of whom hail from right here in the Valley. “The Arizona Fall League is regarded throughout professional baseball as the finishing school for top prospects,” explained league director Steve Cobb. “It features top prospects from every organization in Major League Baseball.” The AFL’s role in baseball’s development process goes deeper than players, too. The league has helped future major league managers, coaches, umpires and front office administrators and executives reach the big leagues. For instance, last July, 36 ex-AFL players and four umpires were selected to participate in MLB’s All-Star Game plus 10 former players in the Futures Game and six of 10 participants in the Home Run Derby. Fans certainly are not forgotten, either. “We also are proud to offer an affordable alternative for fans and families to enjoy professional baseball played at the highest level by an assortment of minor-league all-star and first-round draft choices who are headed to the major leagues,” Cobb said. Approximately 60 percent of players selected for the AFL reach MLB. Just some of the MLB standouts who played in the AFL in recent years include: • Starlin Castro (Cubs SS) • Aroldis Chapman (Reds closer) • Josh Donaldson (Athletics 3B) • Sean Doolittle (Athletics LHP) • Freddie Freeman (Braves 1B) September 2014

• Bryce Harper (Nationals LF) • Drew Hutchison (Blue Jays RHP) • Craig Kimbrel (Braves closer) • Tommy LaStella (Braves 2B) • Andrew McCutchen (Pirates CF) • Salvador Perez (Royals C) • Albert Pujols (Angels 1B/DH) • Giancarlo Stanton (Marlins RF) • Marcus Stroman (Blue Jays RHP) • Troy Tulowitzki (Rockies SS) • Mike Trout (Angels CF) The Arizona Fall League remains among the most affordable outdoor activities in the East Valley this fall. “Both day and night games are only $8 for adults and $6 for children or seniors—and you can sit wherever you like. Season passes are similarly wallet-friendly at just $85 for adults and $75 for children or seniors,” said Cobb, noting that all 30 MLB teams are represented on the AFL’s six teams with at least seven players. The Solar Sox will be stocked with prospects from the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays and Washington Nationals. They play each of the five other teams, whose rosters are made up of players from the rest of the MLB, including the Arizona Diamondbacks, who play on the Salt River Rafters out of Salt River Fields at Talking Stick in Scottsdale. Finally, just as MLB features signature events—such as its All-Star Game and Home Run Derby—so does the AFL. Major events during the 2014 season include: • Bowman Hitting Challenge, 6:35 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, Salt River Fields • Fall Stars Game, 5:08 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, Salt River Fields • Military Appreciation Game (Mesa Solar Sox at defending champion Surprise Saguaros), 6:08 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, Surprise Stadium • AFL Championship Game, 1:08 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, Scottsdale Stadium Visit www.mlbfallball.com for information and tickets.

Grammy Camp ‘Surreal’ for Mountain View Grad By Meghan McCoy A devout music lover, Kassandra Winchester took a few cues from the best in that industry after spending 10 days in Los Angeles for Grammy Camp this summer. She sums up the experience as “surreal.” “That will be one of the most highlighted experiences of my life at this point because I am only 18,” said Winchester, a Mountain View High School graduate. Grammy Camp is a live-in music industry camp where participants with varied interests learn how the music business works. She was one of 167 high school students who attended the camp, which is offered in St. Paul, Los Angeles, Brooklyn and Nashville. “You go to camp with 75 campers and you bond instantly,” she said. “It’s probably the greatest thing that I have ever experienced. I know that some of the people at the camp are people that I will work with in the future. People I can trust with talking with them.” Winchester was accepted to the music journalism portion of the camp, which costs around $2,000, after posting a YouTube video sharing why she deserved to be a part of it. She hit the ground running as soon as she arrived in Los Angeles. The 10 days were filled with activities, ranging from field trips, to instruction, panels of individuals in the industry and putting together a big launch party. “Over the entire trip (I had) about a total of 24 hours of sleep,” she explained. “It was pretty intense.” Winchester said she had the opportunity to work with an

instructor, Steve Baltin, who wrote for Rolling Stone. He offered interview tips, which were helpful when she quizzed pop star Colbie Caillat in person. “Colbie Caillat is so sweet in person,” she said. Another of the camp’s many highlights was building an entire song in less than 90 minutes. “That was incredible for me to see because I have never been around the production side,” said Winchester, who will attend University of New Haven in Connecticut this fall. “It’s interesting to see how fast things happen when you have the chemistry.” At the end of the 10 days, it was difficult to leave, she said. Her group’s final project was to plan a party. “It was surreal that we put on this huge event and it was just over,” she explained. “The after party was our last goodbye to everybody. I remember crying. The 10 days went by quickly, now looking back. I enjoyed every single second that I could. I did my best to live in the moment.” The sole lesson that Winchester took away from the camp was networking with others. “It’s all about a balance of not burning your bridges and remembering people you meet and making sure people remember who you are,” she said.

I’m an Ad I’m also a salesperson in print. I talk to about, oh, 30,000 prospective customers every month. How many prospective customers do you talk to a month?

Preparing Your Child for the First Eye Doctor Visit

By Tracy House Checking children’s eyesight may seem like something that can wait until they are in school. But developmentally, the sooner children have their eyes evaluated, the better. Dr. Lisa Mihora, an ophthalmologist with Banner Health, offered some insight for parents about visiting the eye doctor. Mihora said newborn children should be evaluated if they are born prematurely. “There is no age that is too early to do an eye exam,” Mihora said. “If there was an infection or fetal distress during pregnancy, the child should also be seen early on. “The other question we always have is, ‘What is the family eye history?’ Specifically, what we’re looking for

with that is if there is any history in mom, dad or siblings.” Strabismus (when the eyes are not properly aligned) and amblyopia (lazy eye) are two hereditary eye conditions. From the ages birth to 3, unless there is an indication of an eye condition, ophthalmologists rely on the pediatrician for eye care, Mihora said. “The bottom line, though, is if there’s any question, it’s never too early.” The American Academy of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus recommends the first official visit should be between ages 3 and 5. “Prior to starting school is the recommendation,” Mihora said. She explained the reason for early

screening is to diagnose problems at a younger age. Preparing a child for an eye doctor visit is important. The first thing the doctor should do is interact with the child. Using “fun” visual tools, the eye doctor can evaluate the child and look for responses to visual cues, moving eyes up and down and left to right. The next step is to check the child’s 3-D vision. “There will be Dr. Lisa Mihora bunnies jumping off the page,” she said. “If you have good 3-D vision, it’s telling you that both eyes are working really well together, and both eyes have really good vision. Because to see those cues, to know that something is coming off the page at you, you’ve got

to have at least 20/50 to 20/60 in each eye.” Checking vision one eye at a time and sometimes together using letters, numbers, pictures or tumbling E’s, depending on a child’s verbal skills, is the next step in screening. Next would be a glasses’ prescription check. Later, doctors will dilate the eye to look at the back of it. “It also helps to look for a glasses’ prescription on a nonverbal child or child less than 1 year old with actually using the drops,” she said. “There’s actually no age too young to check a glasses’ prescription.” The drops can be traumatic for a child. Resilience: Bubble Wrap for Life Life can be a bumpy road. Some bumps leave us gleeful and squealing with delight. And some leave deep bruises that we think may never heal. If Eva Dwight you’re a parent, you may have found yourself wishing you could find some kind of emotional bubble wrap that would protect your kids from those awful bumps. There actually is such a product, by the way. It’s called resilience. What causes some children to bounce back from a tough experience, while others seem to crumble at the slightest sign of stress? Angela Duckworth, researcher at Penn State University, refers to resilience as grit. The word evokes images of children playing rough and tumble in the dirt, dusting off their skinned knees and racing off to their next adventure. Tough cookies, those kids. I also picture persistent students asking questions and coming in for extra help until they understand... athletes committing extra hours to practice that results in mastery over their bodies during those crucial moments of competition...kids standing tall in the face of meanness or peer pressure. Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, in his book “Building Resilience in Children and Teens: Giving Kids Roots and Wings,” defines resilience as the ability to recover from setbacks, the quality of bouncing back. Resilient people: • see challenges as opportunities • don’t seek problems, but understand that they will ultimately be strengthened from them • seek solutions rather than engaging in self-doubt, catastrophic thinking, or a mindset of victimization • are equipped to navigate a stressful, complicated world pasta vixen

• push their limits and learn from their mistakes. Ginsburg encourages parents to develop resilience in their children using the seven C’s as their guide: competence; confidence; connection; character; contribution; coping; and control. Kids who have these assets become adults who can take on the world. Growing these assets in our children means being aware of our purpose, and how we can live that in the moment. If I want my children to be capable, I need to find ways for them to learn skills—school skills, housekeeping skills, yard skills, people skills, selfmanagement skills. I need to step back and allow them to practice those skills with ever-increasing levels of competence, and not do too much for them just because it’ll look better if I do it instead. As they develop competence, they will gain confidence and develop character, while making a contribution to our home and family. If I manage my parenting challenges effectively, my children will feel a connection to me, and they’ll feel supported as they cope with their own challenges, which will, hopefully, result in the realization of the power and control that they have over their lives. If we try to keep our kids from experiencing the pain of life’s bumps, we will grow adults who can’t stand up without leaning on us. Instead, we must teach skills to soften the blow and speed the healing so they can push through and move forward. We must give our kids resilience. It’s bubble wrap for life. Some of the changes are visible, while others impact the environment and comfort levels of students and staff members. Here is a snapshot view of some of the improvements.

Italian Crème Cake I love this recipe. Love, love, love it. Elaine Nall’s Italian Crème Cake is just plain crazy out-of-this-world delicious. Period. I got my hands on it a few years ago, and it’s always on my short list of favorite desserts. The recipe was given to Elaine, a longtime Scottsdale educator, more than 40 years ago, and it has withstood the “friends and family favorite” test of time. It’s apparently the most requested dessert at Nall family birthdays, anniversaries, holiday gatherings and even at Elaine’s church group—the one that has met for four decades every Christmas for a white elephant

sale. I’m just happy that when daughter-in-law Donna Nall quietly mentioned to me that Elaine was famous in the family for this cake, I paid attention. In between three ever-so-richtasting layers of buttermilk cake is a luscious slather of cream cheese and pecan icing. The combination is either perfectly sinful or heavenly; I just haven’t quite decided which. Now that we’re heading into fall harvest and baking season, Elaine’s Italian Crème Cake is a must! A big thanks to Donna for sharing a family treasure. And, Elaine is not Italian, but a true Texan, so, “Buon appetito, y’all!”

Besides teppanyaki filet and chicken, As regulars of Got Sushi?, an East Mesa restaurant that serves up she rolled out the Chimichanga teppanyaki, sushi and other delectable ($10.95). We’re not talking the Japanese dishes, sometimes we take a traditional Mexican dish, but sushi rolls—deep-fried tuna, salmon, few things for granted. The teppanyaki dinners ($16.95 to $29.95) are served with steamed rice or stir-fried Japanese noodles, teppan soup, salad, shrimp and vegetables. For $2 extra, visitors may have fried rice, which is what Dave and Maddy ordered. The multiple-course meal began with the teppan mushroom soup, which is simple yet tasty. Meanwhile, the salad is topped with a rich gingerbased dressing that rivals that of chain teppanyaki restaurants. After the salad, it was time for the show. Carlos puts his all into teppanyaki cooking. He started out by making Dave and Maddy’s fried rice. The spatulas flew, as did broccoli and peas. Chock full of vegetables and egg, with a dash of soy sauce and garlic, the fried rice tops any others in the area. Vegetables came next and they were stir fried to perfection. Carlos fashioned the onions into a train’s smoke stack and created a flame in the middle. He pulled out a whistle and

A ‘Beta Marriage’... What is Going On?

G

Local Businesses Add to the Culture and Flavor of Our Community

looking back

Family law is evolving. Millennials are the driving force. (Millennials are those reaching adulthood around the year 1980Paul S. Rowley 2000.) The actual definition of marriage is at the forefront. It is called the “beta marriage.” So what is a “beta marriage”? Beta was the latest release in the software cycle. You may have heard the terminology “a beta test.” In a “beta marriage,” you “couple”—a strange word to use in such a special and sacred relationship such as marriage—for two years. It’s basically a two-year trial period. At the end of two years, you can just “uncouple” or, alternatively, you can formalize and really commit, not just try each other out. Surprisingly, 43 percent of the millennials support the notion of a two-year beta trial marriage. If they “uncouple” after the two years, there would be no divorce, no paperwork. Not good for a divorce attorney! But, really bad for the couple. Thirty-seven percent of millennials favor the “real estate marriage.” Just like a mortgage, we obtain a marriage license for 10, 15 or 30 years or an adjustable term so we can bail at any time! Upon expiration of the term, the marriage is uncoupled. No divorce, no attorneys. The “presidential marriage,” which 21 percent favor, is a four-year arrangement and then poof! You are uncoupled or you can recommit, but only for four more years.

Nearby News • For News Around Our Neighborhood

And 10 percent even favor the “multiple partner model.” Marriage can be with more than one partner, each who fulfills some need in your life! Statistics show millennials cohabitate more, delay marriage until later in life, and even believe divorce is a positive alternative to marital difficulties. From a legal perspective, I can tell you the unintended consequences of redefining marriage will be disastrous. If you are married, make it work if you can! If you are not married, don’t be discouraged. If someone suggests a “beta marriage,” run! That person might just have a problem with commitment. Divorce is always hard on both parents, the children, extended family, and your pocketbook. Adding different categories of marriage to our statutes like “beta,” “real estate,” “presidential” and “multiple partner” is a legal train wreck. If you do have family issues that require court or legal involvement, give us a call. But if you can hang in there, that is even better. Paul S. Rowley is the managing partner at Rowley Chapman and Barney Ltd. His primary legal practice is family law, but he also practices in aviation law as well as a variety of litigation matters. Tammy Parker of DPR Realty Specializes in East Valley financially speaking

With the end of summer coming soon, the housing market will be ramping up for the next phase of buying and selling. Realtor Tammy Parker of DPR Realty values exceptional client service with a personal attention to detail. Parker has been with DPR Realty for three years and primarily works in the East Valley, specializing in Mesa and Gilbert. “I stress communication and customer service,” explained Parker. “When my phone rings, I answer it. When I’m with a client I will call them back as soon as possible, and I respond to emails right away.” With a prior career in education, she enjoys on the town

teaching buyers and sellers about the home buying and selling process. Parker noted that the Valley is in the middle of a summer slump. “The weak demand is a little surprising since interest rates are still in the fours, and home prices have stabilized. Plus, buyers have negotiating power once again.” There are also loan programs available that require little or no down payment. Prices have stabilized which, for the market overall, is good. “In a balanced market, we only see a 2- to 4-percent increase in home prices per year, so that’s what we’re expecting to see in ’14. Now, there is low supply and low demand, which

is interesting because interest rates are still low, and there are good opportunities for buyers,” Parker said. A 30-year Mesa resident, Parker is familiar with the neighborhoods, schools and businesses that make up her hometown and surrounding areas. “I’m passionate about my career,
