SHARP School won the “Bench the Bag” Challenge by collecting 1.11 pounds of plastic bags per student for the citywide recycling challenge.

In addition to the 135 personal quilts that were on display, the Las Sendas Club had an amazing year in producing charitable projects. May Programs Abound at Usery Mountain Park

Usery Mountain Regional Park offers programs for all ages during the month of May. The Movie Night in the Park: “Grand Canyon Adventure” will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, May 9, at the Nature Center. In the movie, three parents and their daughters take viewers deep into the Grand Canyon on a ride through raging rapids and breathtaking canyons. Attendees can bring snacks and drinks, no glass bottles, to the movie. Concessions will also be available. After the movie watch park staff feed snakes.

The Saguaro Blossoms Walk begins at 9 a.m. Monday, May 12, at the Nature Center. The program will answer such questions as why does a saguaro cactus have white blossoms?

Why do the buds open for only one night and what are pollinators?

Participants will walk the quartermile Desert Hawk Trail to search for the cactus and its flowers.

Are you interested in walking 2 miles under the glowing light of May’s “Full Flower Moon?” The Full Moon Hike is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, at the Staging Area. Experience the sights and sounds of the desert with a park ranger. Pets are not permitted for the hike.

The “Just for Kids” Story Time in the Desert begins at 10:30 a.m.

Wednesday, May 21, at the Nature Center. Kids and their caregivers will learn about the desert through a short nature walk, a fun story and game during the program. Attendees are allowed to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the outdoors.

Learn all about butterflies at 6 p.m. Friday, May 23. The program will touch on what makes butterflies different from other insects; how do they survive and what are the different species that live in the area. The onehour “Brown Bag It” series will be held inside the Nature Center. Attendees are

encouraged to stay and watch feeding time for the snakes at 7 p.m. and the “Animal Flashlight Walk” at 7:30 p.m.

The first scorpion hunt of the year will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 31. Ranger B will take attendees of all ages on a safe, fun, 1-mile walk to find scorpions. Throughout the walk, cool facts will be revealed, as skill are sharpened for spotting scorpions.

Gilbert Photographer Showing Works at Mesa Kinkade Galleries

By Lynette Carrington The Thomas Kinkade Gallery has been known for its limited edition art and collectibles in its locations nationwide.

The gallery recently made a rare move and incorporated the works of Gilbert photographer Jim Moon as a featured artist through June at its Superstition Springs Center and Arrowhead Towne Center locations.

“I took photography classes in junior high and high school,” Moon explained.

In the late 1990s, he did architectural photography, but after he had a heart attack nearly 10 years ago, he looked to his hobby.

“My wife decided I needed a different hobby besides work,” he said.

So, he bought a new camera and shortly thereafter went on a storm chase and captured exquisite images.

“That moment sort of changed my life and reignited that passion.”

This is the first time in the United States that a photographer has had

his or her works featured in a Thomas Kinkade Gallery. At the Superstition Springs gallery, director DeAnne Furr Kleiner, as well as owners John and Rachel Hickey, couldn’t have been more excited.

“I came across Jim because my parttime employee is friends with his daughter,” Furr Kleiner said.

“I saw his photos on Facebook and I looked at them and just said, ‘Whoa.’

His photos on canvas are exclusive to us for the next three months. They are gorgeous and they really look like paintings.”

Indeed, Moon has many of his photos on canvas on the walls of his home. Moon’s favorite subjects include wildlife, scenery and Route 66-style photos.

The feedback at the Thomas Kinkade Gallery has been fantastic, according to Moon.

“It’s been fabulous. I took a few pieces to the Superstition Springs location yesterday that are going to the Arrowhead location and the moment I opened up that 30 by 40 photo to

Moon will soon visit the Continental Divide to shoot photos and he has additional plans to travel to Mexico, Canada, Yellowstone and Jackson Hole, Wyo. “I’m looking forward to it and I have a very good guide up in Jackson Hole who will take me to some places that most people have never seen,” Moon said.

By Meghan McCoy The East Valley Friends and Neighbors organization is a firm believer in the ties that bind friendship, companionship and charity work.

Ethel Marques serves as its publicity officer and first vice president in charge of programs.

She got involved after moving from Australia to Scottsdale, and then onto Mesa. Marques has found East Valley Friends and Neighbors to be a great resource for meeting people.

“You can come to us and make friends,” she said.

The club, which has a strong female presence, is a meeting place for folks who are seeking friendship, because they are homebound, they are from out of state or because they merely want to increase their circle of friends.

It meets at 9:30 a.m. the first Wednesday of each month at Grace United Methodist Church, 2024 E. University Dr., Mesa. She said many of the members arrive around 9 a.m. to socialize before the short business meeting at 10 a.m.

Members bring coffee, tea and cakes to enjoy during the activities or featured speaker. For April, members decorated Easter hats with donated decorations for a holiday hat parade.

But that’s not the only get together.

The club hosts luncheon meetings at different restaurants on the third Wednesdays.

On the fourth Saturday, members meet at a restaurant, which attracts anywhere from eight to 30 people.

The East Valley Friends and Neighbors organization packed food for “Feed My Starving Children,” one of many charity events the group participates in.

In addition, the club has many women’s activities, including seeing films; reviewing books; playing games like pinochle, dominoes, shanghai, mahjongg and canasta; golf, and stitch and chat.

Men meet up for an informal breakfast at different restaurants to socialize.

Originally dubbed the Welcome Wagon Club of Mesa, the East Valley Friends and Neighbors, which hosts two charitable events per year, costs $25 annually for a single or couple. That grants members a monthly newsletter, membership directory and participation in group functions, annual fundraisers and general meetings. Those interested can attend a meeting and event to help them decide if they want to join.

“I enjoy the friendship and companionship and the fact that you always have someone to call if you needed help,” Marques said.

Members send each other emails asking for recommendations and help when needed.

The local organization Time to Blossom will host its seventh conference in five years from Monday, June 9, through Friday, June 13, at the East Valley Institute of Technology in Mesa.

The conference is tailored for 11- to 18-year-old LDS young women in Arizona, but girls of all faiths are welcome.

The program includes classes, workshops and activities covering a range of topics such as spiritual, social, inner beauty, outer beauty and leadership.

Speakers include sought-after LDS presenters Elaine Dalton and Brian Andre, along with popular locals, performer Michele Baer, Olympian Lacey Nymeyer John and motivational speaker Dr. Kris Heap. The girls will participate in a large-scale service project, craft projects, dance parties, a talent show and a DownEast Basicssponsored fashion show.

Young women can choose to register for the day or overnight option. Those who register for the day option ($298) attend from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and go home at night. Those who register for the overnight option ($428) stay at the Hyatt Place hotel in Mesa for the week and are bused to and from EVIT every day.

In 2008, Mesa moms Carla Jorgensen and Debbie Forrest were asked to be in charge of a service project for LDS

girls who were attending a summer camp. As they planned the project, the two women discussed another need. They talked about how girls are facing incredible challenges and need to feel hope and courage in their complicated teen years.

The two women created Time to Blossom to empower young women with inner strength, courage and confidence to reach their potential and find lasting happiness. Time to Blossom has since become a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization. This summer will mark the organization’s fifth year and seventh conference.

Choosing a Camp This Summer Starts with Questions

By Tracy House Day camps, overnight camps, out-of-town camps. From sports and drama camps, to cooking and engineering camps, there are as many types of camps as there are kids who go to camp and choosing the right one for a child can be one of the most important decisions parents make.

Ginger Pauley, executive director of American Camp Association (ACA), said the first thing a parent should consider when choosing a camp is the age of the child.

“If it’s a young child, say 7 years old or 8 years old, and they’ve never been away from home, I would suggest that they first put them at a day camp because that’s an area where the child will be comfortable coming home in the afternoon and wouldn’t have to stay overnight,” Pauley said.

“I would never put a child in an overnight camp if they’ve never stayed the night at a friend’s house or grandma and grandpa’s where they’ve been away from their parents.”

Parents, Pauley said, should consider the child’s interests when thinking about a day camp.

Most of the camps that have been accredited through ACA, said Pauley, are in northern Arizona and have gone the extra mile. They’ve taken every step to assure that the camp is safe.

She continued that camps that are not credited by ACA can be very safe.

“There are many reasons why they don’t do accreditation, where they can’t afford accreditation,” Pauley said.

“It could be a church camp, where they don’t think they need to. Boy Scouts, where they don’t think they need to.”

Accredited or not, choosing the right camp starts with gathering information about the camp, which can include the philosophy of the camp, how the staff is trained, what the disciplinary procedures are and what the camp fee includes, such as transportation, meals and activities.

Specifically, for the children, parents should ask about the ratio of campers to counselors and practices of taking the campers out on field trips. “It depends on the age of the children,” Pauley said. “I believe the ratio starts with 1 to 5, depending on the younger kids. As they get older, it goes up exponentially. If they’re a teenager, it’s going to be 1 to 10. If they’re going out in groups there are always two people with them, one at the beginning, one at the end. They do the buddy system; they do count off, to ensure the child is safe when they’re out.”

Camps in Arizona are governed by the county in which they are located,

and Pauley said there is no statemandated ratio.

Pauley said parents should always ask how the staff at the camp is hired.

“They should always ask the director what the rules are of the camp. What are the training procedures? Anything they want to ask, the camp director should be willing to answer that. If they’re not, don’t put the child there.

When my children were growing up, if they (the director) couldn’t answer the questions, they’re not going.”

“You want to know your child is safe,” said Pauley. “You want them in a safe environment.”

East Valley Moms Midwives Provide Moms-To-Be With Delivery Options

Valley Women for Women is a caring community of experienced nurse-midwives who offer the genuine experience of childbirth where the person in charge is the mom.

Janice Bovee—one of the nursemidwives at VWFW with 16 years experience as a nurse-midwife and 22 years of labor/delivery and emergency room nursing experience—explained VWFW is an OB/GYN practice, with 14 female physicians, five full-time nurse midwives, four women’s health nurse practitioners and one female physician assistant.

Bovee said the difference between a birth with a nurse-midwife and an

OB/GYN is “we spend more time with our moms in the office and we’re with them the whole time during labor.”

She clarified that during labor in the hospital, a labor nurse takes care of the mother-to-be until the doctor comes in for the delivery. Nurse-midwives are present during the entire labor process through to delivery. Whether it’s wiping a brow, holding a hand or offering words of encouragement, the nurse-midwife is present monitoring mom.

“The other most important thing is we believe in the normalcy and the normal process of pregnancy and birth and that it’s best not to intervene and that Mother Nature usually doesn’t need any help, but if she does we can help her.”

Brought to you by: Bovee explained the nursemidwives deliver in the hospital and can take care of most emergencies.

In the case that a mother may need a cesarean section, doctors are on hand and the nurse-midwife is there to assist or serve as birth support. Bovee said the rate of cesareans is only 5 percent for VWFW compared to 33 percent nationally. She credits the low percentage to minimal amounts of medical intervention and watchful waiting for normal processes during labor.

“We don’t induce unless there’s a real true medical reason and consider the mother normal until proven otherwise.” she added. “In labor we have them eating and drinking, walking and moving. They’re not treated like a patient with an IV, put in bed and put on a monitor. We don’t do that unless there’s a true medical reason for it.”

As you are doing your spring cleaning, set aside some of the items you plan to get rid of and host a garage sale. The weather is perfect in the Valley and it is a great way to make some extra cash! Here are some tips to help you have a successful sale.

Pick the Right Date and Time.

Weekends are best for garage sales, but make sure you don’t pick a holiday weekend because you won’t get as many customers.

Talk to your neighbors about the date to see if they also want to do a sale. The more sales in a certain location, the more likely people will park and walk around.

Also, make sure you start early to maximize your selling time—and yes, shoppers are out early to buy!

Variety is Key. Don’t limit your garage sale. Start collecting items from all areas (baby stuff, tools, clothes, mirrors, toys, books, photo page

dishes, appliances, etc.). General rule: If you haven’t used an item in the past year, you don’t need it. Sell these items that you don’t need—and someone else does— and make some cash!

Price Reasonably. People are looking for a bargain when they are garage sale shopping. Don’t price your items too high and be willing to negotiate with the buyers. Remember you don’t want it anyhow and everything you don’t sell you will have to lug back inside or to a donation center. You’ll also want to make the prices visible so buyers can look, shop and buy with ease.

Nurse-midwives maintain a relationship with the mother through the process, even if complications arise and a physician becomes involved.

Bovee has been part of 1,368 deliveries in her 16 years. “The midwife service (at VWFW) did 430 births last year...The buzzword about midwives is ‘We don’t deliver babies, the mother does.’ We assist her. We take no credit for all the work she’s doing. It’s her birth and we’re just there to make sure everything goes safely.”

As more women embrace midwifery as an option for childbirth and go back to the natural ideas, Bovee suggested that moms-to-be choose a midwife who will listen to them. “Listen to their wishes and desires. Listen to their concerns.”

There is a misconception that all deliveries by a nurse-midwife are done at home. Bovee said, “All of our births are in the hospital, either at Mercy Gilbert or Chandler Regional (medical centers).”

Another misconception Bovee mentioned is that women who go to

a midwife in the hospital cannot have an epidural. “Oh yes they can,” she said. “If she desires an epidural and she’s progressing very well, we go for it.”

“What I love is that we get to do the best of all worlds,” Bovee said. “We get to do the traditional midwifery stuff which is home style, low intervention and then we can add medical intervention if the mother wants it or if she needs it. The person in charge at all times is the mother.”

Mesa Public Schools Addresses Technology Needs

By Mesa Public Schools In 2012, voters approved a $230 million bond issue for Mesa Public Schools. These funds are providing much-needed upgrades to their facilities, technology infrastructure and transportation services. A critical need being addressed is the aging computers for instruction and productivity.

Technology with a Purpose As the demand for technology increases and new software programs are adopted, older computers do not have the processing power required. The initiative that is underway far exceeds the scope of a traditional “computer refresh” project. Mesa Public Schools stands to fundamentally change the way in which instruction is facilitated in the classroom through technology.

Teachers will employ a device that takes full advantage of the recent advances in mobile Windows technology, and the district’s ongoing initiative to provide all school and administrative sites with wireless Internet access by August.

The district’s Information Systems and Education Technology departments will provide a Lenovo Helix Ultrabook powered by Windows 8.1 to every certificated teacher and administrator through a series of four consecutive deployment cycles. The rollout will be completed by end of the fall semester.

According to Nathan Meyers, educational technology department specialist, “This is an exciting initiative as Mesa Public Schools has the opportunity to provide each teacher with an educational technology tool for engaging online content and digital

resources to students while facilitating teaching and learning in a manner not previously possible.”

Facilitating Classroom Instruction The Helix is a powerful tool with incredible flexibility. Each classroom will be outfitted with a docking station that connects the Helix to a fullsized monitor, mouse and keyboard, providing a traditional desktop workstation. By simply removing or untethering the device from its docking station, the Helix becomes a tablet, freeing teachers to move about the classroom. Parenting Evolution In a recent parenting class, the mother of a 4-year-old child observed that it seems like just when she gets comfortable using a particular strategy, it Eva Dwight loses its effectiveness and she has to figure out a new way to manage a challenge. “It’s like we have to be constantly evolving to keep up with our kids!”

To which another parent quipped, “Yeah, but without evolution there’s extinction!” Oh, so true! Each developmental stage our children goes through forces parents into a new stage of development as well.

These challenges can be annoying and frustrating...or they can be an opportunity for creativity and connection, depending on our mindset. pasta vixen

A tool that I use with coaching clients puts mindset into two categories: judger and learner. Judgers see challenges from a perspective of limitation. They ask: What’s wrong?

Whose fault is it? How can I stay in control? How could I lose? And even sometimes: Why bother?

Learners see challenges from a perspective of openness and opportunity. They ask: What’s right?

What am I responsible for? What are my choices? What’s useful about this?

What can I learn? What’s possible?

When I am being a judger parent, I see challenges presented by my child as win-lose and I need to win to maintain my sense of power. I become less flexible and my primary mood is protective—of my perspective, of my way, of the status quo. I am more likely to punish without seeking an explanation or an alternative

navigating parenthood

perspective from my child and I create an environment in which he isn’t comfortable voicing an opinion or suggesting alternatives. So I build walls between my child and me, which could lead to the extinction of our relationship.

When I am being a learner parent, my primary mood is curious. I seek to understand the belief behind my child’s behavior, and I want to know his perspective on a situation so I can determine whether some teaching on my part is warranted in order to set him up for success the next time.

When I think about the choices available to me as a parent, I take time to consider what acting on those choices will teach my child and how making a particular choice will help me build skills as a parent. I’m a better listener, a better problem solver, and I’m better at adapting to the changes my child is going through as he develops. So I build bridges between my child and me.

Being a learner parent doesn’t mean there are no days when I just want

to crawl into bed with both pizza and cheesecake and forget that I am responsible for this other human life.

It does mean that I see my child as growing, developing, experimenting with life and its boundaries; and I see myself as his teacher, his teammate and, yes, his boundary enforcer.

We’re both learning and growing, we make mistakes, we recover and learn from them, and we move on. We’re evolving.

Keb’ Mo’ Brings ‘BLUESAmericana’ to Mesa Arts Center

By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Three-time Grammy winner Keb’ Mo’ is apologetic for calling an hour late for a phone interview about his Mesa Arts Center show and his new album “BLUESAmericana.” But who can blame him.

“I got so into being home,” said Keb’ Mo’ via telephone from his Nashville abode. “I was working in the backyard doing stuff. It’s just so great to be home. I was gone for five weeks.”

He’s preparing to head out again for a series of dates that includes a Thursday, May 15, stop at the Mesa Arts Center’s Ikeda Theater. The show will feature tracks from his 12th fulllength album, “BLUESAmericana,” and a retrospective of songs covering his 20-year career in roots music.

“We’ll try to make sure we shower before we come so we don’t smell the place up,” he said in jest.

“No, I kind of mix it up when we go to these shows. By that time, the record will be out. I will have moved into the new record. Right now I’m

playing three songs off the new record, but some people come and they don’t even know you have a new record out.

I’ll dig in on the new stuff.”

The “new stuff ” includes “The Worst is Yet to Come,” which opens “BLUESAmericana” in an unlikely way.

“I was kind of like, ‘Do you really want to start an album with “The Worst is Yet to Come?”’” he said with a laugh. “But it just felt right. When you line up all the songs and you go, ‘Where do you start?’ You look at them all and go, ‘There it is.’ Live without fear, I say.”

He’s done just that. During the past two decades Mo’—born Kevin Moore on Oct. 3, 1951—has cultivated a reputation as a modern master of American roots music through the understated excellence of his live and studio performances. His songs have been recorded by B.B. King, Buddy Guy, the Dixie Chicks, Joe Cocker and Robert Palmer, and his playing

inspired leading instrument maker Gibson Brands to issue the Keb’ Mo’ Signature Bluesmaster acoustic guitar.

He’s collaborated with a host of other artists including Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Brown, Cassandra Wilson, Buddy Guy, Amy Grant, Solomon Burke and Little Milton. He also performs the theme song for the sitcom “Mike and Molly” and was the music composer for TV’s “Memphis Beat.”

He’ll spend the rest of this year touring behind “BLUESAmericana,”

including a few gigs with fellow musician G. Love. It took three years to formulate his latest album, but he’ll be ready by October to head back into the studio for a new collection.

“I’m a little too happy to play the blues, but I will play it,” he said with a hearty laugh.

Yes, I am declaring the ENTIRE month we celebrate moms. I know you’re thinking this is because I’m a mom. It’s more than that. You see, when you have shared a similar experience with someone, you understand that person more than someone who hasn’t.

As a mom, I know what goes into being a mom. I know what it feels like to desire to be the best and yet come up short. I can relate to the sacrifices that we joyfully make in being “mom.” What it means to be crazy tired, and yet find yourself up all night with a child that doesn’t feel well, has had a bad dream, or doing a stupid science project. The struggle within between using the degree you fought hard to obtain, or staying home to wipe noses and run carpool.

It’s a daily task of keeping everyone on schedule, making sure homework, doctor’s appointments, piano lessons, laundry, vacuuming and dinner not only get accomplished but with some level of consistency and excellence.

The mom quickly packing a special lunch while alternately making sure the briefcase holds all she needs for the day’s meetings at work, or those moms who find themselves micromanaging teenagers to complete college and scholarship applications and honor curfews. Not to mention, the list of hopes, dreams, desires and tasks that belong to us moms!

Please understand that I’m not whining - we have made the choice to be moms. But moms are just like the rest of the world, making choices, then finding we need to be reminded of why we chose the way we did. In the grand scheme of life, this is the best profession we could ever have imagined. I have learned how to overcome the biggest of power struggles that could bring any corporate executive to their knees and have an amazing solution to dealing with severely loud tantrums wielded by selfish people. I can go from nurse, cook, counselor, bodyguard, referee, teacher, taxi driver to warden all in under an hour - a feat that takes compassion, self-control, intelligence, stamina,

perseverance, wisdom and a whole lot of grace!

It’s in the having done this myself, that I appreciate the moms around me. Mom to mom, I appreciate what you go through to raise and build up healthy kids who will turn into adults with character and integrity.

Kids who know their potential and that good sportsmanship and a strong work ethic are highly valued and rewarded. The moments where you have to sit by and let your child walk through a rough time, wanting so desperately to rescue them, but knowing that in resisting you teach them problem solving and the importance of standing up for themselves and what is right.

Several years ago I was listening to a local radio program. A caller had just called in to try and win one of the contests they were running. The radio personality asked the woman what her name was and what she did for a living. She responded with her name first, followed by, “… and I’m just a mom.” I will never forget the response by the radio personality.

He replied, “Just a MOM! There is no such thing as JUST a mom! My wife is a mom. She stays home with our kids, and I don’t know how she does it. I could never do what she is accomplishing every day, and I appreciate her for it. Please, don’t ever refer to what you do as such a menial thing. It’s a put-down, and you deserve much more for all your hard work.”

Affirm the moms in your life during this month, whether it be your own mom, your wife, friend, or co-worker. The list of reasons for why moms should be valued and encouraged could go on and on. Each story is unique and different and helped create legacy—destiny. The simple fact that you are reading this would imply that someone turned you from a thought into a reality. In a world filled with imitation, Roma Café is the real deal when it comes to Italian food. When you visit this restaurant, it isn’t just a meal; it is family dinner with the Magliozzis.

Antonio, Anna and their son, Marco, happily cook and serve Italian food with recipes from their hometown of Gaeta.

The family opened its first restaurant in Arizona in 2005 at McKellips and Recker roads and moved to the location on Main Street just east of Power Road a few years ago. The building is nondescript from the outside, but inside the low ceilings, dark wood tables and booths, murals, family pictures and stained glass lighting fixtures offer a warm homey feel. There are two nice dining rooms with a full-service bar in between.

A new study finds a correlation between Twitter usage and relationship problems, including divorce. The more frequent the Scott R. Rowley Twitter usage, the higher the likelihood of discord in the couple. The study found the same results for couples who had been together for years, as well as newly formed relationships. The results of this and other studies tends to show that people use social media as an outlet for real-world frustrations.

Facebook (including private messages), Twitter, and text messages are frequently used in court proceedings regarding custody, child support and alimony. Although Arizona is a no-fault state, issues such as criminal conduct and substance abuse can still have major impacts in a divorce. Parties’ motivations in the divorce can also be important for seeking reimbursement of attorney fees. For example, in child support or alimony disputes, claiming financial hardship will be more difficult when the opposing party shows pictures of your recent vacation that you wrote about on Facebook. Tweeting about your wild weekend might not be a good idea, especially if it happened to coincide with your parenting time.

Why the Financial Media is so Bad for You In my line of work I am often asked about my opinion on stuff. The person will typically cite a recent macro economic report, or refer to the opinion of an analyst on CNBC or an investment guru’s monthly newsletter.

Inevitably they ask me if I am adapting my clients’ investment strategy as a result of this recent news. My answer is always the same: Basing investment decisions on financial media pundits is bad for you!

Here’s the problem—much financial news purports to be about the future, but it is really just an account of the past. As a result, many investors project what has already happened onto an imagined future.

It’s understandable that investors, with the help of a short-term focused media, will tend to focus most of their attention on what has happened in financial markets in the past month, week, day or even hour. When stocks have fallen heavily in price, this is routinely reported as, “More bad news for investors today...” In fact, recipe corner

unless you liquidate your portfolio that particular day, it is unlikely to be bad news at all. The media could just as easily say, “Stocks went on sale today, as falling prices offered investors higher expected returns...” If you are a long-term investor, the key issue is how your portfolio performs from now on, not what happened yesterday.

Warren Buffett is considered by many to be America’s greatest stock picking and investment guru. His press conferences are considered a major event by the financial media. In one recent conference the press asked him the following questions: What does he think about the Federal Reserve taper? What could be the implications for emerging markets of a Russian military advance into Ukraine? What does an economic slowdown in China mean for developed markets?

Buffet’s responses to such questions over the years are very insightful. In his 2013 annual letter to shareholders he wrote, “Owners of stocks...too

often let the capricious and irrational behavior of their fellow owners cause them to behave irrationally.” He went on to say, “Because there is so much chatter about markets, the economy, interest rates, price behavior of stocks, etc., some investors believe it is important to listen to the pundits and, worse yet, important to consider acting upon their comments.” “The goal of the nonprofessional should not be to pick winners,” he wrote. “The know-nothing investor who both diversifies and keeps his costs minimal is virtually certain to get satisfactory results.”

As I have explained to our clients and anyone hoping to learn the secret of successful investing, the fastest way to significantly improve your long-term annual investment return is to completely ignore the financial media and take speculation out of the equation. Once you learn that markets are efficient and current stock prices reflect all available news, you will understand that the only thing that will move those prices up or down in the near term are events that have yet to occur, and which have yet to be predicted by the collective wisdom of millions of investors.

A successful investor need only understand diversification and

master their emotions and they will outperform 95 percent of their fellow investors in their investment portfolio. Working with a qualified financial adviser who understands these principles can be key.
