Come for the wine, stay for Fredericksburg There’s a reason people keep coming back to Fredericksburg. Maybe it’s a glass of Texas wine overlooking the vines, a plate from a restaurant you’ll still be talking about on the drive home or an afternoon spent wandering Main Street. Maybe it’s standing atop Enchanted Rock, hearing live music in Luckenbach or watching Fredericksburg light up for Christmas. But those of us who spend our days here know Fredericksburg is more than the sum of its attractions. What makes this place special is the way its history, traditions and people
remain part of everyday life. German heritage isn’t something tucked away in a museum. You’ll find it in our food, music, architecture, festivals and family names. The arts thrive here. So do independent shops, winemakers, chefs, musicians and people who have built something uniquely their own. That’s what we hope to share in this edition of GoFredTX. Inside, we’ll help you explore Texas wine country and some of Fredericksburg’s celebrated restaurants, then point you toward breweries, distilleries and plenty of places to satisfy a sweet
tooth. We’ll take you inside historic homes and museums, out to some of our favorite Hill Country parks and through a community rich with artists and galleries. And because fall and winter may be Fredericksburg at its most festive, you’ll also find Oktoberfest, the Food & Wine Festival, live music, theater and the Christmas traditions that transform this town each holiday season. Whether this is your first visit or your 50th, there is always something else to discover. Willkommen in Fredericksburg!

Straight from the Vine The Texas Hill Country’s fertile soils and varied climate create a diverse winemaking region. The limestone soils impart a minerality to the wines, while clay soils help retain moisture and give wines bold structure. Varieties found throughout the Texas Hill Country AVA include Tannat, Petite Sirah, Tempranillo, Aglianico and Syrah.

A Taste of the Hill Country Fredericksburg Food & Wine Festival | fbgfoodandwine.com For one October weekend, some of the best flavors of the Texas Hill Country converge in Fredericksburg. Wine poured by Hill Country vintners, dishes prepared by area chefs, locally crafted beer and spirits and ingredients connected to the farms and ranches of the region all share the spotlight during the Fredericksburg Food & Wine Festival, set for Oct. 22-25. And when organizers say local, they mean it. Every winery, chef, brewery and distillery participating in the 2026 festival must be based in the Texas Hill Country, turning the four-day celebration into something of an edible and drinkable tour of the region. Rooted in Fredericksburg since 1991 and now produced by the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the festival brings together chefs, winemakers, farmers, ranchers and artisans in

a celebration of the agricultural and culinary traditions that have helped make Fredericksburg a destination. The festival has grown well beyond a single afternoon of wine tasting. More than 4,000 tickets were sold in 2025, with more than 75 food and beverage purveyors and 45-plus wineries, breweries and distilleries participating. At-
tendance at the signature Grand Tasting roughly doubled from the previous year. In 2026, the celebration stretches across four days and several distinctly Fredericksburg settings. Opening Night on Thursday, Oct. 22, begins on the bluff at Contigo Ranch, pairing sweeping Hill Country views with wine, cocktails, bites from local talent and live music. On Friday, the Street Dinner transforms downtown Fredericksburg into an open-air dining room. A long table set down the center of the street welcomes guests for a reception followed by a four-course dinner prepared by Hill Country chefs and paired entirely with Texas Hill Country wines. A new Après Garden Party offers the chance to keep the evening going with cheese, chocolate, bubbles and martinis. Then comes the centerpiece. The Grand Tasting takes over Marktplatz on Saturday, Oct. 24, with more than 75 wine, culinary, brewery and distillery tastings. Between tastes, visitors can explore culinary demonstrations, live music, a beer garden, Rosé Garden and tequila cantina, along with experiences ranging from a whole-hog roast to a silent disco. Sunday slows the pace with the Waterfront Brunch at the Fischer & Wieser Farmstead. Set along the water behind Das Peach Haus, the closing event combines a chef-prepared brunch with Fischer & Wieser wines, handcrafted cocktails and live music.
The celebration also reaches beyond what’s on the plate or in the glass. A portion of festival proceeds benefits the Hill Country Hospitality Workers Emergency Relief Fund, which supports hospitality professionals throughout the region. In 2025, festival initiatives contributed $10,000 to the fund, along with $2,000 to the Fredericksburg High School culinary program and $40,000 toward flood relief. That connection between food, agriculture and community is central to the festival’s mission. From Hill Country vineyards and locally grown peaches to ranch-raised beef, the goal is not simply to give visitors something good to eat and drink, but to introduce them to the people and places behind it. Prost to Oktoberfest Oktoberfest | oktoberfestinfbg.com
For one weekend each fall, the sounds of polka and oompah music spill from Marktplatz as Fredericksburg celebrates its German roots. The 46th annual Oktoberfest returns Oct. 2-4 with three days of music, dancing, food and plenty of Gemütlichkeit, the German spirit of good cheer and fellowship. The festival was ranked No. 6 in the nation in the 2026 USA TODAY 10BEST Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Oktoberfest. Five covered stages will keep dancers moving throughout the weekend, while traditions such as OkTubaFest, the Hauptstrasse Chicken Dance, Stein Hoist, polka and waltz contests and the Family Dirndl and Lederhosen Contest invite visitors to join the fun. Away from the dance floor, festivalgoers can explore three artisan tents, enjoy German and American favorites and choose from more than 50 varieties of beer and a selection of Texas wines. KinderPark offers games, face painting, a jumping castle and other entertainment for younger visitors. Presented by the Pedernales Creative Arts Alliance since 1981, Oktoberfest also supports student scholarships, local arts programs and the MarktPlatz Musical Evenings series.

For years, community regulars have staked out their favorite haunts, befriending servers, memorizing specials and delighting in locally sourced ingredients. Increasingly, diners well beyond Gillespie County are taking notice, too. The following restaurants have not

sausage meal with German trimmings and tea or water, with the serving line open from noon to 7 p.m. Beer, wine and soft drinks will also be available for purchase. Four Hill Country parks worth the trip From a newly opened backcountry wilderness to millions of bats taking flight, the Fredericksburg area offers outdoor experiences that go well beyond a walk in the park. 1. EXPLORE THE NEW SIDE OF ENCHANTED ROCK Enchanted Rock State Natural Area There’s now a lot more Enchanted Rock to explore. A new Backcountry Area opened for self-guided day use in July, giving visitors their first opportunity to freely explore part of the more than 3,700 acres recently added to the state natural area. The expansion adds more than 10 miles of new trails, ponds and Hill Country views. Combined with the existing park, Enchanted Rock now offers nearly 21 miles of hiking trails. The new experience is decidedly backcountry. Visitors enter through the
36
existing park and hike approximately two miles before reaching the new area’s pedestrian gate. There is currently no parking in the Backcountry Area, and trails are rugged with limited shade. Of course, the original attraction isn’t going anywhere. The massive pink granite dome remains one of Texas’ signature natural landmarks, with the Summit Trail providing a steep climb to sweeping Hill Country views. Visitors can also camp, backpack, rock climb, picnic, bird-watch and stargaze. Know before you go: Enchanted Rock frequently reaches capacity, so advance reservations are strongly recommended. 2. WATCH MILLIONS TAKE FLIGHT Old Tunnel State Park Texas’ smallest state park delivers one of its biggest wildlife spectacles. An abandoned 920-foot railroad tunnel south of Fredericksburg becomes home to as many as 3 million Mexican free-tailed bats and thousands of cave myotis bats from May through October. During bat season, visitors can watch the colony pour from the tunnel at dusk as the bats begin their nightly hunt for insects. Ranger programs explain the animals’ ecology and the unusual history of the tunnel, which once belonged to the railroad connecting Fredericksburg with San Antonio. Outside bat-viewing hours, visitors can hike the park’s short nature trail, picnic, bird-watch and explore the railroad and bat history. Know before you go: The trail is open sunrise-5 p.m. year-round. From May 1-Oct. 31, advance tickets are required to remain after 5 p.m. for bat viewing, and tickets are not sold on-site.

Free guided tours of the boyhood home are offered daily. Know before you go: Pick up a free LBJ Ranch driving permit at the neighboring LBJ State Park and Historic Site Visitor Center before entering the ranch. LBJ Ranch 1472 State Park Road 52, Stonewall

Elsewhere in the park, visitors can follow nature trails past Texas Longhorns and American bison, see historic cabins, picnic along the Pedernales River or fish from the bank without a license. The Visitor Center also serves as the starting point for visitors headed across the river to the LBJ Ranch. Know before you go: Admission is free. Home-grown literary festival The Fredericksburg Book Festival will return for its third year on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2027. “We are very excited to host our third Fredericksburg Book Festival and bring more Texas authors to the community of Fredericksburg,” said David Schafer, who co-chairs the event alongside Kathy Shearer. “We’ve been very fortunate to have a literary event that the community has embraced.” The free event has grown each year, with close to 1,000 attendees recorded at last year’s event. At the start of 2027, eight highly awarded Texas authors will hold sessions throughout the day in Downtown Fredericksburg. The authors scheduled to attend the third annual Fredericksburg Book Festival are: Kathi Appelt, Rick Bass, Mike Blakely, Pamela Colloff, David Hillis, Bret Johnston, William Strong, Lisa Wingate. The sessions will include readings, panels, interviews and question and answer sessions. Book signings and sales will be put on by San Antonio’s Twig Book Shop; a portion of the sales will be donated to
the Pioneer Memorial Library. The festival will be hosted in three locations– the Pioneer Memorial Library, St. Joseph’s Halle and the Sanctuary at the Gillespie County Historical Society. A complimentary trolley will shuttle attendees between the three venues.
A popular children’s storybook mascot will be present for photos and entertainment. Poets from Typewriter Rodeo will also be onsite clacking away at vintage typewriters and producing custom poetry for attendees, based on whatever topic is requested.
Pages, programs and preservation The Pioneer Memorial Library lives in a proud, historic limestone building which beams out at Main Street from the heart of downtown Fredericksburg. The 144 year old building, which is the former home of the Gillespie County Courthouse, serves visitors and locals alike with a vast array of physical media and community programs. In the early 60s, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene McDermott of Dallas funded the preservation of the building so that it could be repurposed into a public library. It was originally dedicated in May of 1967, and then later restored and rededicated in 1984. Adults and children six years or older who live in Gillespie County can obtain a library card at no charge. All children must have their card signed by a parent
40
or guardian when filling out a library card application. County residents and visitors who stay for three months or more are eligible to receive a library card. Residents of Blanco, Kendall, Kerr, Kimble, Llano and Mason counties can obtain a card for a $5 fee. All library card applicants are required to show a valid photo ID and proof of residency. Library books can be checked out for up to two weeks. If no other library user submits a request, a checked-out book may be renewed for another two week period. The library also sells gently used books year round in the volunteer run used book store. Cash is preferred. Proceeds from the book sales go toward the summer program and other library programs.
GoFredTX Fall/Winter 2026
ADULTS Adult fiction and non-fiction books, books on CD, large print books, the Texas collection, magazines and newspapers are located on the second floor of the library. Current periodicals, covering a wide range of subjects, are available for reading in the library or at home. All but the latest issues are circulated. The library subscribes to the Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post. YOUTH Children’s books can be found on the first floor. Picture books, easy readers, fiction and non fiction for older children are available. Storytimes are offered throughout the school year. The library participates in the summer reading Program sponsored by the Friends of the
Pioneer Memorial Library. Reading certificates are presented to those who complete the program. FRIENDS OF PML The library, which is a department of the County of Gillespie, is also supported by the Friends of the Pioneer Memorial Library. These volunteers support the library through fundraising and advocacy efforts. The Friends host a variety of programs, including: book sales, summer programs, staff appreciations, library supplies and annual library scholarships for seniors.

Main Street: Where shopping meets small-town charm Few small-town Main Streets can match Fredericksburg for the pure strolling and shopping appeal. Historic buildings, wide sidewalks and block after block of locally owned shops give downtown the kind of atmosphere visitors hope to find in a Hill Country getaway but rarely do. More than 150 locally owned shops, boutiques and art galleries help make Fredericksburg a shopping destination in its own right. Main Street also includes dozens of restaurants, wine tasting rooms, a brewpub and two museums, giving visitors plenty of reasons to spend a full day exploring downtown. Part of what makes the experience
42
distinctive is what shoppers will not find. Franchises and chain stores are generally not allowed in Fredericksburg’s National Historic District along Main Street, helping preserve the independent shops and local character that set downtown apart. Visitors can hunt for Texas-made gifts, Western wear, jewelry, antiques, home décor and artwork, with plenty of unexpected finds tucked between longtime favorites. Specialty food shops offer another taste of the Hill Country, from preserves and sauces to chocolates, baked goods and other treats worth taking home. That shopping, dining and enter-
GoFredTX Fall/Winter 2026
tainment mix is also a major part of a tourism economy that generated $175 million in visitor spending across Gillespie County in 2024, supporting about 1,200 local jobs. Just as important is the experience between the storefronts. Visitors can wander at an easy pace, stop for lunch or a glass of wine, duck into a gallery, admire the historic architecture and then keep shopping. Side streets add even more boutiques and local businesses within an easy walk. It is the kind of downtown that has helped make Fredericksburg one of Texas’ quintessential small-town destinations.

GO Guitars that tune good in the ’90s as the site of Willie Nelson’s famed Fourth of July Picnics, hosts a number of events. This year, on Saturday, Oct. 17, a large party is planned to celebrate Luckenbach’s certification as the 100th Music Friendly Texas Community. Later in the year, the ninth annual Luckenbach Christmas Bazaar + Tumbleweed Hill is slated for Dec. 5.

If you don’t want to be treated like just anybody, drive down to Luckenbach, where everybody is guaranteed to be somebody. Thanks to the likes of Hondo Crouch, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings, the historic community in southeastern Gillespie County awoke from its slumber as just another ghost town and has come to be known as one of the state’s most beloved venues for country music, two-stepping and cold beer. The town possesses all the essential elements for a perfect Texas afternoon: shade provided by 500-year-old oak trees, live music daily and an air-conditioned dance hall. Open at 9 a.m. daily, Luckenbach’s general store sells T-shirts emblazoned with the town’s iconic oval-shaped logo or its beloved slogan, “Everybody’s Somebody in Luckenbach Texas.” The destination, which gained notoriety

HISTORY Luckenbach, founded in 1852 by brothers Jacob, William and August Luckenbach, started with nothing more than a farm and a post office. By the late 19th century, the town’s offerings were expanded by the Engel family, and little by little, a general store, blacksmith shop, dance hall and cotton gin cropped up. By the middle of the 20th century, Luckenbach’s population fell to just 25 residents. After the Engel family sold the town to Hondo Crouch, Kathy Morgan and Guich Koock in the ’70s, it awoke from its ghost-town status and carved out a new reputation as a kooky, fun-loving destination. Crouch declared himself mayor and transformed Luckenbach into a fairytale-esque Old West town full of dominoes and fiddle pickers. In December 2002, Texas Monthly named the town one of the “Top 25 Unusual Treasures of Texas.” Its reputation as a laid-back treasure bursting with homegrown musicians persists today. Keep tradition alive with German Choirs Fredericksburg keeps its German choral heritage alive through two local choirs: the Arion Men’s Choir and the Hermann Sons Mixed Choir. The Arion Männerchor (Arion Men’s Choir) was established in 1908, and the Hermannsöhne Gemischter Chor (Hermann Sons Mixed Choir) followed in 1934. Both groups rehearse weekly and perform throughout the year. Joining is voluntary, and any adult who enjoys singing is welcome to become a member at any time. Their repertoire spans sacred music,
classical masterworks, and folk songs. The choirs will perform at Fredericksburg’s Oktoberfest at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, in the Kinder Hall at Marktplatz, 126 W. Main St. Their annual Fall Concert will be held on Sunday, Nov. 1 at the Holy Family Center of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 306 W. Main St. The social hour, or Gëmutlichkeit, will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the concert will start at 7 p.m. Throughout the year, both choirs also occasionally perform at nursing and retirement homes.

BETHANY LUTHERAN CHURCH ‘A CHRISTMAS JOURNEY’ “A Christmas Journey” is a live drive-through and walk-through Christmas presentation created as a gift to the community by Bethany Lutheran Church, 110 W. Austin St. The annual event returns Friday and Saturday, Dec. 11-12, from 6-8:30 p.m. at no cost to visitors. All cash donations will benefit the Fredericksburg Food Pantry. Nearly 200 volunteers dressed in detailed period attire transform the church’s rear parking lot into scenes of ancient Israel. The layout features nine distinct set pieces detailing biblical moments surrounding the nativity — from the countryside of Bethlehem to the manger scene — complete with live farm animals, period lighting and recorded audio narration. Visitors can view the display from their personal vehicles, walk through along marked footpaths or ride a shuttle bus operating from Main Street. LBJ STATE PARK TREE LIGHTING The 57th Annual Tree Lighting on Dec. 20 at Lyndon B. Johnson State Park & Historic Site, 199 Park Road 52, maintains a public Hill Country tradition initiated by President Lyndon B. Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson. Held in nearby Stonewall, the event begins near Park Headquarters with live choir performances, a live nativity scene, children’s activities, and a visit from Santa Claus. At dusk, officials light the official state park Christmas tree. Following the ceremony, guests follow lantern-lit paths to the historic Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farmstead. Costumed interpreters guide visitors through a 19th-century Texas-German holiday setup featuring real cedar trees decorated with handcut paper ornaments, candlelit rooms, traditional German cookie tastings, and acoustic folk music. The tree lighting runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and is free to attend. Learn more at tpwd.texas.gov.
ZWEITE WEIHNACHTEN Celebrating Fredericksburg’s deep German roots, “Zweite Weihnachten” (“Second Christmas”) preserves the traditional European holiday celebrated on Dec 26. Montabaur Sister City Verein, this afternoon gathering invites residents and travelers to extend their Christmas celebrations. Held inside the GCHS Historic Sanctuary, 312 W. San Antonio St., the gathering features live accordion and brass music, communal singing of holiday carols in both English and German, and traditional refreshments including warm spiced Glühwein (mulled wine) and sliced Stollen (German Christmas fruit cake). The event is free. Learn more at pioneermuseum.org.
