Sonorita area could see welcome changes

Glendale Planning Commission unanimously recommended a change during the Nov. 8 meeting to the Sonorita Community Overlay zoning text amendment, which would allow existing single-family resident homeowners to make improvements to their homes in the area.

The recommendation came after Ocotillo Councilmember Jamie Aldama requested staff research a zoning text amendment that would allow existing

homes to construct additions in accordance with specific standards within the Sonorita community. “This amendment would allow existing homes to remain in this community and to potentially expand should the property owner wish to construct something, such as a room addition,� Senior Planner Thomas Ritz said. “It would also allow them to apply for additional funding.�

The Sonorita Community, which is bounded by Grand, 59th and Maryland avenues, is currently zoned light industrial and the amendment would allow

current residential properties in the community to apply for local, state and federal assistance for home repairs. “New home construction on vacant lots would not be permitted with this change,� Ritz said. “Aldama had requested staff to research if establishing a residential overlay would allow Sonorita residents to apply for assistance for any needed repairs.�

City continues to add new housing projects

Glendale continues to grow as council approves more zoning changes and numerous housing tracts within city limits.

Among the housing tracts recently approved are the Camelback 95, Camelback Village, Northern Ridge Estates, Positano, among the nearly 3,300 homes currently in various stages of review and construction, with nearly 67 percent in the Westgate Sports and Entertainment District.

The largest addition is the Camelback 95 apartment complex near 95th Avenue and Camelback Road, which will include 240 luxury units. Council approved the general plan and zoning text amendment in September and construction is already underway on the project.

“I think the commercial property around it is going to benefit from it, all the way to Westgate and north,” Barrel District Councilman Bart Turner said during an August council meeting. “So, we not only have to have land for retail, we also have to have families that bring home nice paychecks that they can spend in those retail locations, too.”

Camelback Village, near 84th Lane and Camelback Road, will add nearly 53 new homes with two-car garages and standard covered patios. All exterior elevations include a finished surface and concrete tile roofs. Concrete tile roof and ground-mounted mechanical equipment are standard features for all house products.

Mayor Jerry Weiers said both the projects will help business growth in the area.

there that is currently economically distressed,” Weiers said. “We have an Am/Pm store that went out of business five years ago on one corner and, with these new homes coming in, I think that we have a real strong chance of somebody going back in and opening that store up, and possibly that whole shopping center area. It’s exciting to know that maybe we won’t be the seventh-largest city (in Arizona), maybe we can get back up to fifth, or something, if we keep growing like this.”

All of the projects were approved unanimously and continue the council vision of increased growth within the city limits.

Recent reports about the former parking lot south of Kellis High School, which was used for overflow parking for Arizona Cardinals games before the city completed the new parking lot south of State Farm Stadium, has been in the process for months.

The Planning Commission gave city staff approval for a rezoning of the lot in August, and look into the possible sale

of the land for possible new housing or an apartment complex.

The recently approved projects, including the Stonehaven development that was approved last year near Bethany Home Road and 91st Avenue, will bring nearly 4,000 new homes into the city limits.

Among the other recently approved housing are the Deer Valley Vistas, near Union Hills Drive and 51st Avenue, which will add 18 new homes north of Deer Valley High School — one of the smallest new housing tracts to be approved.

The Planning Commission approved numerous new plans during its Oct. 18 meeting that will now be forwarded to council for final approval.

Manistee Ranch will add a 109-unit senior care facility on more than 147 acres near 53rd and Haywood avenues, Golden Lane Apartments would add a 192-unit apartment complex near West Alice and 67th avenues; and Paradise Cove will add 17 single-family homes near Paradise Lane and 67th Avenue.

Opinion One last slap in the face to GCC football These players, coaches and fans deserved so much more if that was the final home football game at Matt O. Hanhila Stadium at Glendale Community College Nov. 3.

After 51 years, barring a change on the Maricopa County Community College Board following Tuesday’s election, GCC football will end after its Nov. 10 game at Scottsdale.

Maricopa County Community College District board announced earlier this year the end for Glendale, Scottsdale, Phoenix and Mesa football programs. Pima Community College decided a few months later to also end football at the end of the year.

But, the final game at home should not have been the mess it was off the field Nov. 3 when the game, scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff, was delayed until nearly 3 p.m. because someone forgot to hire referees to officiate the game.

I arrived about 20 minutes before the scheduled kickoff and walked onto the field to something I have rarely seen that close to the start of a game: no players or coaches on the field.

What was going on, did I read the time wrong?

Talking to fans who were sitting in the stands who came to show support of the kids and program, the reaction was swift.

“Somebody forgot to get referees to officiate the game, there are none here,” Phoenix resident Joan Robinson, sitting in the visiting stands in a Phoenix Bears jersey, said. “This is the next to last game and this says a lot as to what administrators really think about football. What a joke.”

Heck, even the cheerleaders, except four from GCC, did not take the time to show up to the game.

Independence defeats Glendale to win first Unified Sports badminton championship

Two Glendale Union High School District Unified Sports teams shined during the Unified Sports Badminton State Championship as Independence defeated Glendale in the championship match Oct. 21.

Independence’s Oscar Arredondo Torres and Enrique Arrellano defeated Glendale’s Rogelio Miranda Real and Vanessa Sanchez two matches to none in the championship matchup.

Hundreds of spectators packed the Independence gym and cheered from the opening introductions to every point. The band played during timeouts and numerous cheerleaders cheered like it was every other sporting event.

“The competition was great and most matches had very close scores,” Independence head coach Jennifer Perry said. “The sportsmanship was impressive and there was an incredibly positive vibe throughout the day.”

Coaches were excited about the match and the fact that games were competitive.

“Both teams played incredibly well and displayed the highest level of sportsmanship,” Perry said. “It was so exciting to know that our district was going to have a championship regardless of which school won the final match.”

Unified Sports and Special Olympics Unified sports is a program designed to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities

to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Unified Sports is sports in which regular education students “mentor” and assist developmentally delayed students in sports as well as everyday high school life.

“Independence has competed in Unified events for years,” Perry said.

“The past few years we have done Unified bowling, soccer, bocce ball and track.”

Special Olympics Arizona (SOAZ) and Unified sports has grown to over 12,000 participants now play Unified Sports in Arizona.

said. “Everyone at Kellis has been so supportive and helpful to schools in the Glendale Union High School District as they started their programs.”

GUHSD gains acceptance and success Independence, which had more than 40 participants on their squad with 21 athletes and 23 partners, had four teams qualify for the tournament.

“The Independence Special Olympics Unified program is run in conjunction with our peer tutoring program and the tutors are the partners during our practices and competitions,” Perry said. “I feel that these programs are incredibly important to the culture of the campus so the tutors/partners become advocates for those with special needs and there’s a ripple effect into the community as they graduate.”

Perry said a lot of the unified athletes move on to other jobs after competing in the program.

“They may become the manager who is willing to hire employees with disabilities or the next generation of teachers and speech therapists or a first responder who has a deeper understanding of working with community members with special needs,” Perry said.

Glendale had 20 athletes and 10 partners in Unified Sports and, in their first year of competing in the sport, had Miranda Real and Vanessa Sanchez advance to the finals before losing.

“The competition was evenly matched,” Glendale head coach Megan O’Donnell said. “There was a positive atmosphere throughout the tournament and the purpose is to get more students involved and to open up opportunities for students who want to be part of athletics.”

The main philosophy of Unified Sports is about inclusion and recognition of the Special Olympics athletes on their high school campus. The athletes enjoy the competition as it is happening by not being overly competitive, thus losing site of the overall spirit of inclusion.

the response has been strong for the new additions to the athletics program.

“Currently this year, Glendale will be participating in badminton, basketball and track for our first year,” O’Donnell said. “I would like to eventually compete in all unified sports and my goal is to take as many players to the state competition as possible.”

SOAZ partnership with Arizona Interscholastic Association In June of 2011, a partnership was formed between Special Olympics Arizona (SOAZ) and the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) with the sole purpose of building a state-wide Unified Sports system.

“This was the second year for badminton, but the first year teams could earn a state title from AIA,” Forsell said.

“Arizona was the first state to establish a partnership with a regulatory body for high school athletics and that was huge for us.”

But, at the possible end of the sport, there should have been more.

Every former football player should have been invited and showcased, there should have been a parade showcasing the three National Junior College Athletic Association 1988, 2000, and 2005 National Championship teams — and all former coaches should have been introduced.

Instead, we got nearly a two-hour delay with one ref showing up midway through the first quarter and another showing up after the first quarter had ended.

Plus, to top it off, none of the administrators that voted to end the sport had the nerve to show up.

Sad and embarrassing were the only two words that came to mind while watching this game.

The people who made this decision are so enmeshed in their own issues, they don’t realize they are ending opportunities for hundreds to continue their educations.

Having talked to hundreds of community college athletes over the years, and I say athletes because there are rumors that MCCCD will end all athletics in the next year, most have told me if it wasn’t for community college, they would not have had the opportunity to attend college.

As the election comes to a head Nov. 6 (after press-time) the current members of the board up for re-election have shown what they think by not showing up to any of the candidate forums to discuss the issues. Numerous emails and calls from me and other reporters have

gone unanswered and they have yet to give clear reasons as to why the decision was made.

The board has been questioned about the transparency of their decision with cost estimates at more than $20 million to maintain the program at the four schools that will be eliminated.

The college district’s 2018-19 budget totals $537,254,929, with an additional $193,805,061 listed for district offices. Athletics total $12,178,728, which represents 1.2 percent of the total district budget ($731,059,890).

Here’s a thought. Maybe we take $20 million from the district offices budget and keep athletics and improve the facilities. Heck, let’s take $50 million from the district offices and really make sports relevant at the community college level.

The board also estimated that, “ongoing costs to maintain the football programs could exceed $20 million in needed capital improvements and associated expenses.�

But that point was also questioned when it was announced in an email by GCC President Teresa Leyba Ruiz, that Matt O. Hanhila Stadium alone, “is in dire need of repair and would exceed $23 mil-

lion to bring into compliance and repair of various plumbing problems and upgrades.�

Cold calls by myself to contractors in Arizona, with no specifics and asked if they knew of the stadium, I asked how much it would cost to rebuild the stadium as is without specifics.

The answered ranged from $5 million to $15 million for a basic stadium to be rebuilt.

So where does MCCCD come up with $20 million for capital improvements and Ruiz says GCC’s stadium is up to $23 million alone?

But issues are not just at GCC. Pima’s football team, which was scheduled to travel to Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, Nov. 3 for its game, had to scramble after head coach Jim Monoco found out that a $6,800 non-refundable deposit on airline tickets earlier this year was lost when it was not paid in full by the school.

All of this, combined with the lack of respect for what could be the final football game held at GCC, and it all adds up as one last slap in the face from the board to everyone who coached, played or attended one of the team’s games over the 51 years of its existence.

Coaches, players and parents have also donated time to make the sports successful and all have great goals for the future of the program “Not just Independence, but across the district and state, I would love to see Unified Sports classes become the norm,� Perry said. “That way, students are taking their physical education classes together and preparing for Unified competitions so that the spirit of inclusion is part of their daily schedule.�

Just perfect The Glendale Elementary School District honored 94 students who earned perfect scores in all or part of last spring’s AzMERIT state assessment.

The students were recognized by their families, schools and District during a reception and special ceremony. The District honored students who received a perfect score on either the language arts or math portion of the assessment, or a perfect score on both.

Four students — American’s Wesley Flores, Bicentennial North’s Zaid Del Rio Enriquez, Burton’s Draigan Morris and Coyote Ridge’s Leonardo Rodriguez — earned perfect scores on both the English Language Arts and Mathemat-ics portion of the assessment. Additionally, five students earned perfect scores on two mathematics assessments. They are: American’s Alicia Flores (mathe-matics and algebra); Coyote Ridge’s Alberto Mora Trinidad (mathematics and algebra); Mensendick’s Jailynn De La Rocha Rodallegas (mathematics and ge-ometry) and Javsel Rodriguez (mathematics and geometry); and Sunset Vista’s Carlos Ayala Flores (mathematics and algebra).

In all, five students from Bicentennial North, three from Bicentennial South, five from Challenger, six from Coyote Ridge, eight from Desert Garden, nine from Desert Spirit, three from Discovery, nine from Don Mensendick, four from Glendale American, four from Glendale Landmark, ten from Glenn F. Burton, five from Harold W. Smith, eight from Horizon, one from Isaac E. Imes, one from Melvin E. Sine, eleven from Sunset Vista, and two from Wil-liam C. Jack were honored.

“Earning a perfect score on any assessment is difficult, but to do so on a state-wide assessment can be difficult,” said Superintendent Cindy Segotta-Jones. “We are extremely proud of all of our students, and of the work of their teach-ers, staff and families that helped make their achievement possible.”

GESD student achievement trajectory moves upward Students in the Glendale Elementary School District continue to make academic gains based on the results of last spring’s AzMERIT exam.

Gains were noticable across the District and at individual schools, including: • an increase of 11 percent in third-grade math scores; • a seven percent increase in eighth-grade reading scores; • an increase of 15 percent in geometry scores; • and significant decreases in the number of students underperforming in English Language Acquisition (ELA) classes, special education and other areas.

GESD offers parents free English language classes The Glendale Elementary School District is offering free English classes to parents of students who do not speak English.

Classes are held every Tuesday and Thurs-day from 4:25 p.m. until 6:15 p.m. at Issac E. Imes, Harold W. Smith, Desert Garden and William C. Jack schools. Classes started on Oct. 23 and will run through April 25, 2019.

Interested parents can contact Maria Ur-rutia at 623-237-7207 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Students in the third- through eighth-grades saw a fourth consecutive year of growth in both mathematics and ELA. In addition, both fourth- and eighth-grad-ers continue to make positive gains on the AIMS science exam. Finally, GESD students continue to pass both geometry (93 percent) and algebra (92 percent) at significant rates, which count for high school credit.

“We’re proud of the advancements we see from our students,” said Assistant Superin-tendent for Educational Services Dr. Gerry Petersen-Incorvaia. “These scores are a tes-tament to the students’ hard work, as well as the dedication of our teachers and staff.”

Adobe Mountain Boy Scout Troop 4, Grand Canyon Council, is like any other Boy Scout troop - Scouts earn badges, learn life skills and make new friends. The only difference is the troop is inside Adobe Mountain School which is operated by the Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections. Nancy Welton, 62, has been a Scout leader since 2005. In 2007, she founded the troop at Adobe Mountain to help boys ages 14 to 17 through a difficult time in their lives. She said she never anticipated she would still

be involved 11 years later.

Her husband, Chris Welton, is an assistant scoutmaster and so is her son, Cody Welton. An additional five assistant scoutmasters also help out.

But more volunteer help is needed.

“Anything on the other side of the fence is called the Outs,” Welton said.

“People on the Outs are welcome to come in and help these kids learn new skills and confidence. Leadership and duty to God is also a component of scouting. Not one religion — it’s a nonsectarian organization. We open and close each meeting with a prayer, and I’m never lacking for kids to say

The scouting program celebrated its 10th anniversary in August.

“It’s a phenomenal program being recognized across the country and we’re very proud of that,” Welton said.

Troop 4 was the first Boy Scout Troop in the U.S. to go behind bars, metaphorically speaking. The model is working well and now other Scouting Councils across the country are trying out or considering similar programs to reach boys who might not have ever had an opportunity to participate in scouting.

To date, Troop 4 in Phoenix has served more than 300 young men.

The average stay at Adobe Mountain School is six to eight months. Troop 4 can take up to eight Scouts at a time.

They meet weekly and participate in many of the same merit badges all scouts do and from time to time, they camp overnight on the facility’s athletic field, and occasionally are allowed to go on hikes or attend special events on approved furloughs with Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections security present.

Welton said she spends about eight hours a week volunteering her time with scouting. She fell into her role in 2007, she said, “Because, quite honestly, no one else wanted to take the job.”

She was a proud mother of two Eagle Scouts and knew what an important role scouting played in her children’s lives.

Troop 4 has a need for volunteers.

They need adults over 21 years old to serve as a scout leader, volunteer as a merit badge counselor or sit on the troop committee. All permanent volunteers must be fingerprinted, go

through a comprehensive background check and take a drug test. “Occasional volunteers” can be approved for a sixmonth span of time by going through a cursory background check.

Welton said, “I love helping at risk youth. These boys are mostly respectful and kind. Scouting is providing an environment for them to grow and succeed. It’s really rewarding to see them turn their lives around.”

Scouting also gives the boys a chance to become boys again, Welton said. “They’ve been arrested, in the back of police cars. Scouting allows them to rediscover fun, go to the Outs and begin again. Back to school, go to college, seek a career,” Welton said.

“They are boys, they’re not adults, and many adults have failed them to get there; that’s the sad part.

“I look at it as a ministry of sorts to go and serve young people and give them hope for the future. It’s a beautiful opportunity to work with them. And I have fun.

“Have them become Scouts, not be gangbanging. They’re not horrible people, they’re absolutely not.”

Welton emphasized that there are no boys with violent crime backgrounds in the Scouting program.

Volunteers do not have to wear a uniform or go through the scout program. “You can be in business, be in

Midwestern recognizes community outreach at annual gala Academic, healthcare, business, and community leaders from around the Valley joined together at Midwestern University on Oct. 13 at the annual Bright Lights, Shining Stars gala, which recognizes and honors community service and leadership. The event was held at the University’s Glendale Campus, 19555 N.59th Ave. This year, Kathleen H. Goeppinger, president and CEO of Midwestern, presented the 2018 COMET (Community Outreach: Motivating Excellence for Tomorrow) Award to Joe A. Tyler, and the 2018 Shooting Star Award to Dana S. Devine and William H. Devine.

Tyler is an artist, sculptor, and horticulturist whose work has been commissioned and displayed all over the world. He graduated in 1972 from Arizona State University with a master of science degree in environmental horticulture. He then owned and operated a nursery for 15 years, after which

he sold his business and became the founding director of the arboretum at Arizona State University for six years.

After deciding to pursue art on a full time basis, he has worked on more than 100 projects, most of them large public art sculptures. Among his artworks on display at Midwestern University are a collection of decorative benches lining the campus’ reflecting pool; an artistic ironworks sculpture representing the College of Veterinary Medicine’s inaugural graduating class gift; and a symbolic iron sahuaro cactus in front of Sahuaro Hall.

Dana Devine has spent 45 years educating physicians, residents, interns, and student doctors and has taught pathology at Midwestern University for more than 20 years. Devine worked for more than 40 years as a pathologist at various hospitals in the Phoenix

William Devine is the director of Postgraduate Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) at Midwestern University’s Osteopathic Postgraduate Training Institute (OPTI) and the program director of the Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (NMM) Residency Program at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is also the OMM Specialty Clinic coordinator at the Midwestern University Multispecialty Clinic and clinical professor at AZCOM. He is the recipient of numerous educational and service awards,

including the Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association’s “Excellence in Osteopathic Medical Education Award” and Midwestern University’s highest honor, the Littlejohn Award.

PTSD Foundation/Camp Hope opens Arizona chapter The PTSD Foundation of American is known for providing hope and healing for the unseen wounds of war. According to a VA study in 2015, 20.6 veterans a day with PTSD commit suicide nationwide. To combat this statistic, the PTSD Foundation became “boots on the ground” in Houston, Texas in 2009 to help military veterans afflicted by posttraumatic stress disorder. By 2012, Camp Hope was built to house, serve and protect veterans suffering with PTSD. Today, the PTSD Foundation of America has 13 national chapters, 53 groups and 500-plus attendees weekly outside of the Houston area. On Oct. 30, the PTSD Foundation of America hosted the inaugural Warrior Group meeting in Phoenix to begin the Arizona chapter. The meeting was held at the Blue Steel Security office, 2320 W. Peoria Ave. in Phoenix.

Andrina Shields, advocate and supporter of the PTSD Foundation and

Camp Hope, knows all too well the impact of veteran suicide. Her son, Robert M. Graves, took his life on Memorial Day, 2017.

“By the time we realized the depth of Robbie’s illness, it was too late. We did our best to get him to Camp Hope, unfortunately we ran out of time. He slipped through the cracks and became one of 20 a day that takes their life,” Shields said.

Since her son’s untimely death, Shields has been a key component to bringing the PTSD Foundation to Phoenix.

Shields said, “The aftermath of Robbie’s death has been nothing short of devastating. It is heartbreaking to think that his 5-year-old son, Michael, will never know the great man that Robbie was. My hopes and goals for the future is to prevent another veteran suicide triggered by PTSD, and another family to feel pain of this magnitude, death by suicide changes everyone, and everything”.

The PTSD Foundation of America opened Camp Hope in May 2012.

Camp Hope is a six-month peer-to-peer program completely free to veterans to help them with their issues with combatrelated PTSD and resulting conditions.

The staff is comprised of alumni of the program, “who have been there and done that,” and can speak to other combat veterans through experience-based mentoring.

Glendale Chamber Military & Veterans Affairs Committee making history Thunderbird flag-raising ceremony Nov. 10 The Glendale Chamber of Commerce Military & Veterans Affairs Committee will be making history at 7 a.m.

Nov. 10 by raising a permanent flag atop the highest peak in Glendale. The committee is inviting the community to take part in the special flag-raising ceremony.

The community is invited to participate in a human chain to carry (hand-over-hand) the flag to the newly installed flag pole at Arrowhead Point at Thunderbird Conservation Park, where it will be permanently displayed as a point of pride for residents and visitors alike. The event coincides with Veterans Day weekend and pays tribute to those who have served and are serving in the U.S. armed services. Residents can show their support and patriotism by wearing red, white and blue.

“The Glendale Chamber Military & Veterans Affairs Committee has taken on the responsibility to keep the flag up to code, we will run up the mountain to lower it down to half-staff and when it’s time to raise it back up, we’ll raise it up again,” said Jeff Turney, chair of the Glendale Chamber Military & Veterans Affairs Committee.

While the event is free, donations are being welcomed to help fund the project, as the Glendale Chamber has made a 20-year commitment to properly maintain the flag.

Lesko staffer inducted into Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame Oct. 26, the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame inducted its Class of 2018 honorees at a ceremony at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale.

One of the 28 inductees this year was Charles “Chuck” Byers Jr., Military and Veterans Community Liaison for Congresswoman Debbie Lesko (AZ-08).

“Chuck has been an advocate for veterans across the nation since his service in the United States Army,” Lesko said.

“Now, he works tirelessly on behalf of veterans and their families in the Eighth Congressional District. Here in Arizona, Chuck is well-known in the community and is a member of numerous veterans’ organizations. I thank Chuck and the other 27 inductees for their service and sacrifice to our nation and congratulate them on this extraordinary achievement.”

Born in Houston, Texas in 1948, Byers served in the U.S. Army for six years, including service as a combat medic in Vietnam. Byers is a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Military Order of the Purple Heart, and Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA). He serves as the Second Vice President for the State Council of Arizona Vietnam Veterans of America

Religion Things are changing and they’re changing fast In the era when commuters routinely traveled by train, a businessman en route to an important meeting asked a porter to make sure he got off the train at five o’clock in the morning. Imagine how he felt when he woke up at nine o’clock in the morning, miles past his destination.

Furiously, he ripped into the porter and he didn’t mince words.

“That’s one angry man,” remarked a passenger who overheard the tirade.

“If you think he was angry,” the porter said, “You should have seen the guy I put off the train at five o’clock this morning.”

Now, there’s a story for you. Some will laugh, and some will cry, depending on whether they were the player or the audience.

Dr. James Comer of Yale Medical School observes, “We have a sense the

world’s closing in on us, that there are too many people around, and that we’re getting ripped off. We feel powerless about our problems and we explode in frustration.”

Sound familiar? Currently, many things seem, well, out of control. It feels like we are on a never-ending emotional roller coaster ride of elections, the economy, problems in relationships, decreasing confidence, political polarization, violence and increased family needs and concerns.

Things are changing, and things are changing fast. No one really knows where all of this is going. We are losing our trust in anyone and anything. With all of this going on we can lose the mental and emotional ability to process what is going on around us and get frustrated or angry, start to hate, throw up our

Maybe God is trying to say something to us in these troubling, frustrating times. Maybe God wants to show us His power to you personally in your problem as a person or in our country’s problems.

Here’s the truth and it’s not fake news.

Whether we like it or not, God is still in control. Just ask Job. He was the guy in the Bible who invented Murphy’s Law. I think he may have invented the roller coaster, too. Job lost it all and but got it all back in the end.

Maybe this is the time that God has been waiting for to get our attention to show us our need of a source and a resource that is higher than ourselves.

He has been knocking at our door, but in good times, we tend to ignore that knock. I guarantee you God would rather not have to use Plan “B” to get our attention, but if Plan “A” doesn’t work, what is a benevolent God left to do?

Allophones Karr said, “Some people are always grumbling because roses have thorns. I am thankful that thorns have roses.”

Whatever you do, don’t quit in frustrating times. Adjust, rethink, retool,

explore different ways, examine yourself, and grow. Every person, every company, every country goes through good and bad times. When in tough times, we must be careful how we talk to ourselves because we are listening. Jesus calmed storms on the outside of people and He calms storms on the inside of people, too.

Here’s some ancient wisdom from the Bible you can depend on in these frustrating or angry times. No, if’s, and’s or but’s about it ... it’s true and it works.

“Take the old prophets as your mentors. They put up with anything, went through everything, and never once quit, all the time honoring God. What a gift life is to those who stay on course.

You’ve heard of Job’s staying power, and you know how God brought it all together at the end. That’s because God cares, cares right down to the last detail.”

James 5:10,11.

Consider this. It takes a problem to have a miracle. In other words, if you have a problem or dilemma, you are a candidate for a miracle. If your country has a problem, it is a candidate for a miracle. Miracles are God’s business.

I’m not sticking my head in the sand. I’d rather believe God because I don’t like the other alternatives.

Don’t put too much weight on first impressions When I first became a judge for the Manistee Justice Court, my mom attended the ceremony in which I was sworn in. This is referred to as “The Investiture Ceremony.” It is a formal ceremony in which a judge swears his or her oath to the office that he or she now holds.

As all of you know, judges traditionally wear black robes. I am no

exception. During the ceremony, I put on my robe for the first time. The robe serves several purposes; it immediately identifies me as the judge in a courtroom setting. Personally, it also reminds me of the responsibility I have to the citizens of Maricopa County. It also reminds me I should not have any prejudices when making my rulings. This simply means I

Judge Donald Watts Manistee Justice Court should make my ruling on what is presented to the court and what the law says and never based on any personal opinion.

Like all good sons, I agreed to have my picture taken with my mother while wearing my robe at the ceremony. I am not very fond of pictures of myself, but this particular picture turned out pretty good and my mom had it framed and later put in her living room.

A few months later, my mom’s friend saw the picture and commented that it must be nice to have a son that sings in the choir. Singing is not my

best quality; as a matter of fact, I am the only person I know that was asked to leave a choir. My mom explained that I did not sing in the choir, but that I was a justice of the peace. Her first impression of me was not remotely close to what my robe represented.

They both got a good laugh.

Personally I’ve never been fond of first impressions because they are usually wrong. All of us have good days and bad days. I am sure you don’t want people to make permanent opinions about you if you just happen to have a bad day. Give that person an opportunity to disprove (or prove) your initial impression.

Lesson from the bench: Always put your best foot forward by not putting too much weight on first impressions.

“Along with room additions, could homeowners add something like a patio or porch to existing homes or are they not allowed?” Froke asked.

Ritz said any expansions of current homes would be allowed, and homeowners would have a one-year time frame to rebuild the current residences in the area.

“This change would allow for them to repair or add on, as well as rebuild if they do it within one year of the zoning change,” Ritz said. “It would not allow for any new home construction in the overlay area.”

During public comments, a business owner in the area, Pat Reid, asked if any of the proposed changes would change property taxes, to which staff said it would not and there would be no additional taxes added to the area.

Commissioner Warren Wilfong asked if a homeowner had vacant land next to their current residence and wanted to open a machine shop (or something similar), could they do that currently.

“Basically, because it is zoned light industrial, if they wanted to do that, they could open that type of business,” Ritz said.

“So, if they wanted to put a machine shop on their vacant property, that would be allowed without restriction?” Wilfong asked.

“They would have to follow codes for noise issues, but their vacant lots, by rights, would be available to be used for light industrial uses,” Ritz said.

In August 2016, Aldama originally requested staff research whether alternative funding was available for the Sonorita neighborhood since the area is exempt from federal Community Development Block Grant funding for rehabilitation activities.

Any changes from residential to light industrial would be allowed, given that homeowners followed all codes and compliances, but they would not be allowed to change back.

“They can change their homes to light industrial, following all zoning codes in their changes,” Ritz said. “But once it is completed, it would not be allowed to be changed back to residential.”

The changes will now be brought to a future council meeting for further consideration and final approval.

Hundreds cheer GCC’s final home football game

As the final seconds clicked off the clock at Matt O. Hanhila Stadium Nov. 3, hundreds of fans stood and cheered in what may be the final football game for Glendale Community College.

During the final GCC home game, approximately 250 fans t attended and were forced into a nearly two-hour wait as referees had not arrived at the stadium in time for the scheduled 1 p.m. kickoff.

“How do you not have the refs here for what is possibly the final home football game,” Glendale resident George Garcia said. “This is such a disgrace and a kick in the face to everyone playing and here to support these kids.”

As fans cheered the players, they were quietly hoping the Nov. 6 election would change and the sport would return to the field.

Fans were upset that there was no announcement or honoring of former teams, coaches and players.

“How can you not mention it with a program that has had the history that GCC has had over the years?” Glendale resident Sandra Dobson asked. “They have won national titles and you are not even going to mention that? How can you do that to the people that have played here?”

GCC won National Junior College Athletic Association National Championship titles in 1998, 2000, and 2005, and the 2005 team is the only team from Arizona to be inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame. GCC has won the Valley of the Sun Bowl 19 times, the top bowl game for Arizona Community College football.

Maricopa County Community College District announced Feb. 5 that 2018 would be the final season of football at GCC, Scottsdale, Mesa and Phoenix, with Pima announcing later in the year they would also end their program at the end of the season.

Cactus 37, Tucson Canyon del Oro, 26 Cactus scored its first of four touchdowns on big plays as the No. 7 Cactus Cobras defeated No. 10 Canyon del Oro 37-26 Nov. 2 at Cactus High School.

After falling behind 14-7 early in the second quarter, Anthony Flores broke three tackles and rumbled 60 yards for a touchdown.

Plas Johnson scored two minutes later on a 68-yard punt return and the Cobras led 22-13 at halftime.

After the Cobras’ defense stopped Canyon del Oro on a fourth down at the Cobra three-yard line, Zaach Cullop took the first snap, dropped back and lofted a 97-yard touchdown pass to Johnson in what proved to be the winning touchdown with just a little more than eight

minutes left in the third quarter.

Flores rushed for 236 yards and two touchdowns and Cullop passed for 136 yards and one touchdown while rushing for 27 yards and another touchdown in the victory.

In his third season as head coach, Rob York improved his three-year record to 22-9, with his first season his worst at 55. Since the last time the team qualified for the playoffs in 2006, when the team finished 6-5, the Cardinals had compiled a 21-70 record in the nine years before York took over.

The offense improved this season, averaging 42.8 points a game, while the defense allowed 17.2 points per game.

GCC volleyball signs 2 to letters of intent

As the Glendale Community College volleyball team prepared for the Arizona Community College Regional tournament, head coach Lisa Stuck announced the signing of two high school players with letters of intent to play for the Gauchos next season. “This is one of the biggest decisions they will make and my hope for them is that when they are done and ready to move, in their heart they would hope that GCC is a four-year school because of the fun they will have,� said Stuck. “We want to compete and win, but we also want them to enjoy their time here, because it will go fast.�

Ford, who helped Sunrise Mountain to a 23-12 record and advancing to the Arizona Interscholastic Association 5A quarterfinals before losing to Gilbert Campo Verde 3-0, had 514 digs and 42 service aces in three seasons on varsity. “I know I will have to work for my spot because there are a lot of great girls on the team, but I am ready for the challenge,� Ford said.

Bernard, who led Mountain Ridge to a playoff play-in game before losing to Gilbert Highland 3-1, finished her high school career with 227 kills and 361 digs. “I wanted to sign with GCC because I played for Coach Stuck a couple of years ago and she was my all-time favorite coach ever,� Bernard said. “I definitely wanted to play for her again and it is a great opportunity for me because I wanted to continue playing and I didn’t want to play for anyone else.�

Stuck said both girls were recruited for the same reason she has recruited during her 21 years at GCC. “I have coached both of them in club ball and had a good amount of time

know they will have to compete and I think you need that and it makes a healthy environment,� Stuck said. “We lose eight players (to graduation), but these two have the talent and work ethic to contribute next season.�

GCC dominates for 52-29 victory over Phoenix

In what may be the final home football game at Glendale Community College, the Gauchos sent hundreds of fans home happy after a 52-28 victory over Phoenix College Nov. 3 at Matt O. Hanhila Stadium.

After a nearly two-hour delay because no referees were on site, the Gauchos opened the game with a stop of the Phoenix offense before their offense started rolling on their first drive.

Running back Dexter Carter carried the ball six times on a seven-play drive, culminating when he took a handoff, raced up the middle, breaking two tackles and racing 26 yards for a touchdown with 8:27 left in the first quarter.

“Carter has been playing really well the past few games, is really running strong the past few games,” GCC head coach Michael Bell said.

After the Gauchos defense came through with a three-and-out for Phoenix, the Gauchos offense wasted little time, when on the second play, quarterback Elijah Lorence dropped back and was nearly sacked before escaping the sack and rolling to his left.

With two defenders chasing him out of the pocket, Lorence lofted a pass down the field to a wide open Andrew Banks who pulled the ball in, spun around a defender driving toward him, and raced into the end zone for a 54-yard touchdown to put GCC up 14-0.

“Our offensive line is probably the strongest part of our team, with maybe five to seven kids that can play Division I football,” Bell said. “We are really doing the things we need to right now and playing strong.”

Maybe feeling a little left out in the early part of the game, the defense stepped up in the final seconds of the first quarter.

As Phoenix was at midfield, quarterback Cameron Yowell dropped back to pass. As three defenders pressured, he fired a pass that was picked off by the Gauchos’ Quintin Estice. Estice turned around, cut up the middle, missing two tacklers, and raced 74 yards down the sideline for a touchdown.

Gaucho, completing 10 of 19 passes for 202 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Carter finished with 192 yards rushing and three touchdowns in the Gauchos victory.

Phoenix quarterback Yowell passed for 312 yards and four touchdowns, but was also intercepted twice as the Gauchos (possibly) closed Matt O. Hanhila Stadium with a victory.

“I had to move (Woods) from receiver to defense and he has been playing really well on defense for us,” Bell said. “As we head into the final gam, we will be facing a strong team and just need to play our game.”

GCC (3-7 overall, 2-4 in Western States Football league) ends the season 1 p.m. Nov. 10 at Scottsdale Community College (6-3, 3-3).
