Two apparent political action committees, or PACs, voiced opinions in the Glendale Nov. 5 election.

Did one of them ignore campaign laws?

Proposition 424 asked to raise the salary of councilmembers by 55%, from $34,000 to $52,685. The mayor’s salary would have increased by 43%, from $48,000 to $68,490. The proposition was rejected, with 74% voting against it.

Before the election, two groups sent high-quality mailings.

The Best of the West urged voters to approve raises to the mayor and city council.

Arizonans 4 Fair Government lobbied

Glendale residents to “Send a message to Glendale council: Vote No on their pay raises.”

The Best of the West registered with the city of Glendale, providing a “Statement of Organization” and financial report.

Arizonans 4 Fair Government did not register with the city of Glendale. Nor did the group provide financing documentation.

In searchable databases online, there is no record of Arizonans 4 Fair Government (or Arizonans for Fair Government) registered as a PAC with the Maricopa County recorder or secretary of state.

He made two big milestones: His 94th birthday and one last Veterans Day. Then on Nov. 12, World War II veteran Howard Benson died in Florida. He was with his family, which is how Glendale Police Sgt. Jeff Turney wanted him to go.

In September, Glendale Police received a call from a frantic family member: Benson was planning to move to Florida, which was fine, as he was in ailing health.

But he was planning to drive himself from Glendale.

bination, of at least $1,000 in connection with any election during a calendar year.”

According to the “Campaign Finance” guide by the secretary of state’s office, “At the city and town level, statements of organization must be filed with the city or town clerk.”

The Glendale Star emailed Glendale City Attorney Michael Bailey, asking him if Arizonans 4 Fair Government not registering with the city as a PAC is a potential campaign violation.

“The city has received a complaint,” Bailey answered. He did not respond to a follow-up question asking if he is investigating the complaint.

The leader of Best of the West feels strongly about there being no record for the Arizonans 4 Fair Government mailer.

“This should be investigated,” said Diane McCarthy.

“We have a PAC. They don’t.”

McCarthy and Vern Crow — both were on the Council Compensation Commission, which recommended raises to council — formed the Best of the West PAC in October. Both documented donations, with McCarthy giving $100 and Crow donating $1,000.

The only other donor was Louis Sands. The Sands Chevrolet owner donated $10,000 to Best of the West.

Best of the West financial forms, filed with Glendale Oct. 28, show consultant Constantin Querard gave an “in-kind contribution” of $550.

Best of the West spent a total of $8,672.36.Grassroots Partners was paid $1,768.73 and ModLuxe Print $6,903.63.

How much Arizonans 4 Fair Government spent, and who funded the group, is not clear.

According to McCarthy, “all kinds of very negative information” in the anti-raise mailing “caused us to lose.”

“I think we did the best we could,” McCarthy added.

She said the committee which recommended the raises “did it in a very masterful way. A very fair way.”

The main reason she lobbied for the pay increase: “They haven’t had a raise in 13 years.

A mailer from Arizonans 4 Fair Government urged Glendale residents to “Send a message to Glendale council: Vote No on their pay raises.”

“They deserved a raise. We have a really good mayor and council.”

She said that the biggest donor, Sands, agreed with her. “He was more than happy” to contribute, McCarthy said.

“I made the ask. He said he would for the same reasons I did: They deserve to have a raise.”

The Glendale Star left a message for Sands asking for comment, but had not heard back by press time.

On her joyceclarkunfiltered.com blog, councilwoman Joyce Clark suggested state Sen. Paul Boyer (D-20) is associated with Arizonans 4 Fair Government group, as its Tweets are “all about Paul Boyer and only Paul Boyer.”

“There are many in Glendale disappointed with Mr. Boyer’s insertion into what is a local, Glendale issue, not a state issue,” Clark wrote, in an Oct. 22 blog.

“He’s very angry with Glendale and seems to be running a vendetta. He gained media attention when he protested the issue of a Glendale firefighter with cancer having been denied coverage by the appropriate state agency.”

Boyer’s response, regarding Arizonans 4 Fair Government: “I have nothing to do with that organization nor had I even heard of it until I received a phone call from a reporter asking about it. I stayed out of 424 and city elections entirely.

“Councilwoman Clark is misinformed.”

to talk Benson out of the plan failed, Turney offered to use his off days to drive the fellow veteran to Florida.

The “buddy-veteran road trip” made national news, though Turney shrugged it off as “just what we do.”

On the long drive, Benson was an enthusiastic conversationalist, sharing stories of flying for the Navy as a radar operator during World War II. Near the end of the three-day drive, Turney gave Benson a tour of the Keesler Air Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, where Turney was stationed during part of his 21 years in the Air Force.

“I tell you, I wish that I was able to walk again and do things with him,” Benson told the Glendale Star, from Florida after the trip.

“I think he and I would be great friends, forever.”

Less than two months after taking him home, Turney received the news of Howard’s passing by phone.

“I was surprised when his son called me,” Turney said.

“It confirms my decision to take him home was the right decision. He was able to see and be with his family for his 94th birthday and saw one last Veterans Day celebration.”

Howard Benson’s death inspired Turney to write the following poem, titled “The Veteran”: When countries invade, they’re on the front line; they stand tall and defend, pushing death from their mind They may be afraid, but the enemy won’t know; they’ve answered the call, defending liberty as they go Our way of life is so precious, they will fight to the end; standing beside each other, they will not bend Protecting our freedom, can take a tremendous toll, but liberty requires them to perform their role

‘Shocking’ pace of development near Loop 303

While it may not be as high-profile as the Entertainment District or Downtown Glendale, the Loops 303 area could be a prime economic development area for Glendale.

The pace of development here is “shocking,” said one at a recent workshop.

Fueling this pace, a few big projects are looming in west Glendale. This is the same hot area commercial property sales site loopnet.com describes as: “The Loop 303 Manufacturing Corridor is a premier location that meets the increasing demand for industrial and commercial space. The Loop 303 provides direct access to Interstate 10 (5 miles south) and Interstate-17 (29 miles northeast). The corridor is a key location providing access to the western and southwestern regions of the United States.”

On Nov. 12, Glendale City Council held a workshop concerning “Loop 303 Development and Annexation.”

Chris Anaradian, assistant city manager, introduced the workshop as addressing “a continued wave of interest in development along our freeway corridors.

“It’s a shocking and surprising pace of rapid change that has come about,” Anaradian said. ”What is happening is very positive.”

Councilwoman Joyce Clark asked what the area will look like in five years.

City Manager Kevin Phelps said, while it is hard to project out that far, things are happening in the near future: “Property deals are being transacted, construction documents are being created, there’s actual money being spent.

“In five years the 303 Corridor is going to look substantially different.

A half-dozen projects will be vertical in the next 18 months,” Phelps said.

According to the agenda for the workshop, the purpose of it was “to update City Council on current and upcoming development along the Loop 303, including the status of multiple annexation applications.”

more rapidly than originally projected. Largely due to expansion of the EPCOR (a utility provider) wastewater sewer main, which was kicked off by the new Ball, Rauch, and Red Bull production facility.”

The Red Bull production center is on Reems and Peoria avenues, roughly 1 mile from the 303.

In anticipation of the area growing quickly, the agenda recommended forward-thinking: “Annexation and development in the Loop 303 region will allow the city of Glendale to control land uses and development patterns in and around Luke Air Force Base. Job creation, employment opportunities and private sector investment will be realized long term in this area as Loop 303, and the Northern Parkway are developed.”

The workshop focused on annexing and rezoning two large development properties within the Loop 303 region: •The Barclay Group, 97 acres south of Glendale Avenue on the west side of the Loop 303 Freeway.

•The Moss Property, 76 acres at the northeast corner of Sarival and Maryland avenues.

Both are in Maricopa County. Glendale is looking at moving forward from pre-annexation agreements to bring both of those areas within the city limits.

On the Barclay property, the workshop agenda states city council approved “a Pre-Annexation Development Agreement (PADA)” on Aug. 27.

Moving forward with annexation and rezoning to planned area development (PAD) would facilitate development plans, according to the workshop

material.

“The 7 acres along Glendale Avenue will include potential office, hotel, retail and similar commercial-type uses.”

The other 90 acres are to be developed with industrial buildings.

The Moss land is proposed project is for warehouse and office space of approximately 1.25-million-square-feet.

Lisa Collins, a city planning administrator, gave a Powerpoint presentation to council on both projects.

“We’ve been working closely with Economic Development to get them moving along quickly,” Collins said.

For both properties, Glendale’s Planning Department staff was “requesting City Council provide direction to move forward on the annexation and rezoning processes.”

Regarding the Barclay project, two councilors were enthusiastic.

“I’m very supportive of this project,” said Clark.

“I’m very supportive of this project as well,” agreed Councilman Ray Malnar. “It’s going to provide hightech jobs that are going to help our community.”

In a newsletter he sent out a few days after the workshop, Malnar wrote, “We received information that thousands of additional acres of land are being considered for development.

Most of this land is within the Luke Corridor and has restrictions on residential building, thus may become the commercial and industrial mega zone in the West Valley.”

No action was taken as the potential annexations will be presented at city council meetings.

New information on officer involved shooting

Glendale Police clarified information regarding the Oct. 13 incident, in which Levy Isaac Madueno Santibanez, 17, was shot and killed by a Glendale Police officer.

A Glendale Star report stated Santibanez fired a handgun at an officer responding to a late-night “illegal party” on 68th Avenue.

“There was very preliminary information put out on the night of the shooting that was factually incorrect and through the continuing investiga-

tion we learned that officers were not fired upon,” said Jay O’Neill, a police spokesman.

O’Neill said Santibanez was firing his handgun when police arrived. “His arm and handgun were pointed in the direction of where the party was taking place,” O’Neill said.

Santibanez, he added, “received multiple verbal commands to both put his hands up and to get on the ground, all of which were ignored.”

The Glendale Police Department has not released the name of the officer who shot and killed Santibanez.

BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF A woman died early Tuesday morning and a pregnant woman was hospitalized after a crash near Grand and Missouri avenues.

“Preliminary information is that there was a two vehicle accident, unknown on cause or direction of vehicles at this time,” said Glendale Police

spokeswoman Tiffany Ngalula.

“An adult female was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel. One pregnant adult female has been transported to a local valley hospital with unknown injuries.”

Police closed Grand Avenue from 51st to 43rd avenues Tuesday morning as they investigated the crash.

City closing in on sale of Bank of America building

Following a “north of $6 million” sale of Glen Lakes Golf Course, another sale is being finalized by Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps.

“With the Bank of America building, we are working on a sales agreement,” Phelps said.

“We hired a broker to go out and solicit bids, and now we’re working towards getting an agreement (to present) to council.”

As in a tentative sale of the golf course, a sale of the Bank of America building will have to be approved by Glendale City Council.

The Bank of America building sale is not quite as large as the golf course.

“It’ll be north of $4 million,” Phelps said of the bank building sale.

“In both cases, we felt very strongly about the way we marketed it toward going in the hands of private sector” rather than continuing public ownership, Phelps added.

“We don’t see this as anything but a win-win.”

was spending hundreds of thousands per year to maintain, the bank building had been generating revenue for the city.

“We paid cash for it, so we had netlease dollars coming in,” Phelps said.

Even so, he said that, in addition to the sales price, shifting the building ownership to the private sector will continue to pay off, in the long run: “It’ll go on the tax rolls.”

“Bank of America Plaza is currently owned by the city of Glendale, which seeks to sell its interest in the building thereby allowing the city to focus more on its core responsibilities of providing services to its residents and local businesses. Also owned by the city is an adjacent five-level parking garage. The city will give Bank of America Plaza rights to 309 designated parking spaces in the garage with additional public parking available if needed.

Phelps said the Bank of America Plaza sale is another key piece of the city’s economic turnaround.

Less than a decade ago, “We were in a tedious financial condition,” Phelps said. “We felt what we had to do was right the ship financially. The best way to do that is with new revenues, economic development.

“That has been our single biggest success story: economic development.

We are kicking tail all over this region in projects.”

Though the anticipated sales of the golf course and bank building would bring Glendale more than $10 million, Phelps hinted this is just the tip of a financial iceberg.

“What you will see announced and built over the next few years will blow people away,” he said with a smile.

“We have a lot of stuff going on.”

PUSD superintendent search continues

BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF The Peoria Unified School District Governing Board announced four PUSD superintendent finalists.

The following finalists will be invited to interview with the Governing Board and stakeholder teams on Dec. 9 and 10: Dr. Alexa Cunningham. superintendent of Salt Lake City School District in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dr. Jason Reynolds, deputy superintendent of Peoria Unified School District.

Dr. Arsenio Romero, superintendent of the Deming Public Schools in Deming, New Mexico.

Dr. Scott Menzel, superintendent of Washtenaw Intermediate School District in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The finalists will meet with teams, comprised of parents, students and support staff, in two weeks.

PUSD Superintendent Linda Palles Thompson announced her intent to retire at the end of this school year.

The new superintendent is expected

to begin July 1.

According to PUSD, “community feedback will be integrated into the process.” Details have not been announced.

PUSD has released an updated timeline on the process: Nov. 18: Executive session and selection of superintendent finalists.

League of Women Voters to discuss climate change

Members of the League of Women Voters of Northwest Maricopa County will discuss the United Nations Report on climate change and plastic pollution at 6 p.m.

Monday, Nov. 2 Darnell Kirksey and Becky Sayler – chair of the committee and a league member, respectively – will take questions and discuss the issues from the report at the Universalist Unitarian Church at 17450 Avenue of the Arts, Surprise Sayler is set to speak about the impact plastic has on the environment, through global warming, air, land, water, and wildlife just to name a few. She will also provide tips to the audience about how they can use less plastic and reduce their personal damage and carbon footprint.

Kirksey is a retired educator and

has many years studying and teaching about climate change issues. She works on several environmentally-friendly groups, including the League and the Audubon Society.

League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League also welcomes men as members.

Meet Abrazo West’s ‘Dr. Robot’ aka Dr. Pandey

In the physicians’ lounge at Abrazo West Campus, all Dr. Sushil Pandey did was press a button on a machine.

His hot chocolate was mixed inside the machine and poured into a waiting cup, perfectly delivered.

Some day, his colorectal surgeries will be just as easy.

“Absolutely,” he answered when asked if fully-automated surgery is coming. “It’s like a self-driving car: It’s going to happen.

“This is the future.”

Until a “Dr. Robot” comes along, Pandey will continue to work with machines, using robotics in the surgery room.

As he will at the Surgical Robotics Showcase from noon to 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, Pandy demonstrated how he uses robotic technology.

For the demonstration, instead of a live patient, a plastic torso — dubbed “Fred” by hospital staff — lies patiently on the operation table. Four long arms of a machine are inserted into holes in the plastic torso.

If this were an actual patient, Pandey would surgically create those four small holes. During two- to three-hour procedures, the robotic machines help him to noninvasively complete his surgeries, while never having to physically touch

his patient.

He sits in front of a video monitor in the corner of the surgery room, about 10 feet from the operating table. Using two fingers of each hand and a foot pedal, Pandey operates the machine “hands,”

separating intestines, cutting through organs, digging out cancer, then tying or stapling sutures.

Pandey’s children, ages 2, 5 and 8 have used the machine for simulations.

“They love it,” he said.

“For them, it’s very easy to comprehend,” said Pandey, who lives in Glendale. “It’s the same technology as video games.”

“We have some surgeons that are very young— they grew up on video games,” added Trisha Pollard, Abrazo West’s director of Surgical Services. “They pick this up very easily.”

Pandey said one of the reasons he loves the DaVinci Xi is the range of motion; unencumbered by human limitations, the machine “hands” can move 360 degrees.

Perhaps more important is the camera attached to one arm allows for extreme closeups, looking into hidden areas and magnifying far beyond the capabilities of the human eye.

“It is faster, it is more precise and it’s safer,” Pandey said.

One of his greatest success stories would not have been possible without robotics, he said. Three years ago, a 37-year-old woman was experiencing severe bleeding shortly after childbirth.

A colonoscopy revealed she had colon cancer.

Using robotic techniques, Pandey was able to remove the tumor with minimal invasion.

Without the DaVinci apparatus, Pandey said, “I would have had to take the bowels out —everything.” Adding: “She would have had to have a colectomy bag for the rest of her life.”

Abrazo West began using the robotic device in 2014. Pandey, 41, used the DaVinci a few years prior to Abrazo introducing the surgical robot into operating rooms, while he was training at the University of Chicago. Since moving to Arizona and joining Abrazo, he has done hundreds of surgeries with the robotic device.

Even with complicated surgeries, he said, patients often go home the day after robotic-assisted surgery — as opposed to spending three or four days in the hospital following traditional surgery methods.

And, when compared to “open surgery” in which a line of flesh is cut open for the surgeon to operate, recovery time at home is faster and far less painful with robotic surgery, Pandey said.

“It’s just four small holes,” he said.

“Before they go home, I give patients a prescription for pain medication. And on follow up they tell me, ‘I didn’t even need the pain medication — I just used Tylenol.’”

How reliable is this machine? Pandey grinned.

“It’s more reliable than my eyes,” he said. “More reliable than my hands.”

Stacey Frederico thinks her surgeon is extremely reliable.

“I would highly recommend Dr. Pandey, that’s for sure,” said Frederico, 51, of Goodyear.

A week after her Nov. 6 surgery to remove a damaged part of her intestines, she was walking around, feeling good and ready to get back to work as an administrative assistant. “I couldn’t be happier. Everything has gone just great,” she said.

How does she feel about Pandey using robotic arms for her surgery?

“I think that’s really cool,” she said.

“That’s amazing that he can do that.”

David Stipp agreed with that.

Stipp, 59, and a Phoenix resident had a routine colonoscopy — and found out he had a tumor in his intestine. His doctor recommended Pandey.

“He told me he was going to make some small incisions to insert cameras and robotics. And one main incision to remove the tumor,” Stipp said.

On Sept. 25, Pandey used the DaVinci machine to remove a golfball-sized tumor from Stipp.

“Everything was good, recovery was great,” Stipp said. “I’ve had zero problems.

“I was out of the hospital within 24 hours.”

His recovery at home also went well. “The first week, I had to manage the pain (with medication). It wasn’t overwhelming, but I had to manage it. By the end of the second week, I was back to work,” the data analyst said.

He said it probably wouldn’t have been nearly as fast recovery, doing traditional surgery with a “stem to stern” incision, as he put it.

Stipp’s thought’s on robotic surgery?

“Pretty remarkable,” he said. “It’s the world we live in now.”

And that world is fast-changing.

Standing in front of the DaVinci Xi, Dr. Pandey said he saw the remarkable progression from its predecessor, the Si. Pandey expects another update in the next year or two, moving closer to autonomous surgery.

Although he is an enthusiastic proponent of technology, Pandey is not concerned about job security.

“This machine is not going to replace me,” he said. “It’s going to help me.”

One wonders what Sahara Pandey, 8, will be operating by the time she is her father’s age.

“She broke her arm, so I took her to the hospital,” Dr. Pandy said. “The nurse asked what she wanted to be when she grows up. She said, ‘I want to be Daddy. I want to be a colorectal surgeon.’”

BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF The 19th annual Operation Santa Claus holiday charity drive kicked off Nov. 14. Every person who contributes will have a chance to win a brand-new vehicle.

Operation Santa Claus is a partnership between ABC15 and Sanderson Ford to collect food, toys, clothes and monetary donations for Arizona charities.

This year’s charities are: St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance, Special Olympics Arizona, Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center (SARRC), Military Assistance Mission (MAM) and Chicanos Por La Causa (CPLC).

“Operation Santa Claus” runs through Dec. 18 and culminates the following day with a “human chain” of volunteers who help deliver all the collected goods to Arizona families in need.

One word stirs much terror, anger and frustration

My mother’s father, a dressmaker, was a man I cannot remember speaking a word, though I met him a few times when I was a little boy.

This was the early 1970s and he had been afflicted with cancer of the brain.

My mother, who would later become a nurse, explained to me that doctors had been forced to slice out the bad parts of my grandfather’s brain to keep him alive.

So, he couldn’t speak, not after his lobotomy. He was a pale-skinned shell in a wheelchair, a husk of a human being whose blank expression and grunts frightened me almost as much as the disease that had done so much damage.

Cancer. To this day, just reading and hearing the word chills my guts.

So, you can imagine how little I enjoy typing those six letters. But I am going to regardless because every day in this country more than 4,800 people learn that they’ve been diagnosed with cancer.

None of them write a newspaper column, so let me take a moment to offer them a voice and to give a voice to their tens of thousands of loved ones who hear that diagnosis and feel terror, frustration, pain and anger.

Damn you, cancer.

Yes, I understand that’s not the worst profanity you can use. I apologize if you’re offended, but to be honest, the six-letter “c-word” really calls for a four-letter word.

As you read this, a man I consider a brother is pumped full of poison five days a week in hopes of killing the cancer — which struck first in his testicles and then his lymph nodes.

He’s a warrior, strong in body, heart and mind. So, I cannot fathom what the hell cancer was thinking messing with him. But maybe cancer thinks it’s the baddest dude on the block, given it kills 600,000 Americans every single year.

Cancer is wrong. And I mean it in every sense of the word.

A few days into his chemotherapy, I went to sit with Bryan at the Mayo Clinic during his treatment. To see him and listen to him, you’d think he was suffering from nothing more nagging than a head cold.

We talked about golf, politics, his beautiful wife and niece, all our usual topics.

His strength gave me the strength to keep it together until I left his cubicle. But out in the third-floor lobby a glimpse of something brought me to tears.

There were so many people waiting.

Dozens. Scores. I mean, it was one big lobby and it felt populated as far as my eye could see.

Cancer had bullied its way into every life in the room.

Then it occurred to me that I was standing in one waiting room on one floor of one oncology clinic in one city in one state.

You can do the math.

Cancer, it seems, grows like cancer, endless multiplying, invading, destroying, gobbling up lives.

In the car before I lost my nerve, I called my primary care doctor and made an appointment. For years, I have been too afraid to get any sort of cancer screening.

This week, I confessed my failure and got the referrals I need to get a colonoscopy and a prostate screening and a full examination of my sun-weathered skin.

I’m not one to give advice, but I suggest you do the same if you’re the right age.

The doctor scolded me a bit for skipping years of exams, but she seemed to understand when I told her about my sudden burst of inspiration. Why now?

Because cancer be damned, that’s why. In this world, I cannot think of a single belief I hold more strongly.

Peoria kids will suffer because we are selfish voters

Voting is a privilege. It also takes time.

Even when voting by mail, there is the act of drawing a line in ink and driving or walking to a post box. When the Peoria Unified School District budget override ballot came to my house, I did not hesitate. I mailed mine, and my Yes vote came with much contemplation and it will continue to, even when I am retired and don’t have kids attending the schools I live close enough to have an impact on with my little pen mark on a very important ballot.

I want to see funding supported for my schools to ensure our community’s children maintain the best possible educational experience this state can seem to muster. But - and here comes the hard truth - there are selfish residents out there who traded a $2 to $6 per month increase on property taxes with the bandaid faulty logic that “this doesn’t impact them so why should they pay for it.”

It’s a fair question, I guess. Especially when you might have to dial back once a month on that $6 beer you get from the cart girl during your daily outing on that par-3 golf course you live by. Why would you care if the young people who may, one day, be your doctor, your lawyer, your utility and civil engineers, mechanics, pilots, financial planners, etc. have a solid and thoughtful early education? Sure, you walked 10 miles in the snow to get to your school back in your day. Today’s kids should feel the struggles of over-crowded classrooms that let students slip through the cracks. And teachers. I mean, we all know they make way too much already, right? What’s a few less of them in the system and it’s not like they need to afford a $6 beer on the course.

Did you know that quality public education is one of the leading factors when considering economic investment in a community? A company is more likely to locate to a community that places a priority on its educational system. Employees want to live in communities with good schools—so do CEOs. And they bring jobs, which brings more money into the coffers which take some of the burdens off of those very voters who were inclined to say NO to things on the ballot. Good schools also have a direct correlation to lower crime. Still that $6 beer is awfully good. (Yeah, that was an eye roll you felt in those words.)

I ask all of this rhetorically because any vote other than a YES on our recent district override was just foolish.

And I acknowledge that there are some residents whose income is so very rigid that any change carries a consequence.

But any state that somehow puts truly desperate citizens on fixed incomes with zero wiggle room in a situation where they have to make a choice on school funding is heartless.

And now the personal hard truth I must admit to myself: I should have done more. I was naïve and thought that casting my vote was enough. I had faith in the greater good, in a mass understanding of what a Yes and No on this measure meant. I believed that the greater good would win on my vote alone. I was wrong. But I have learned from this, and we all can. The good news is nothing in the world of budget funding and politics is ever permanent. There is an opportunity for us to right this wrong. In 2020, the measure can be on the ballot again.

It may be more difficult to inform every voter next year as presidential elections increase turnout, but it’s a task I’m willing to take on, and my optimism leads me to believe there are others willing to take it on with me. I (we) will inform the voting masses here in Peoria’s District of the real facts.

We also don’t have to wait for an election to get started. The funding issues, of course, start at the state. Yes, this quagmire has not been solved for years, but it doesn’t mean we stop trying. It doesn’t mean we sit quietly. It doesn’t mean that the pressure and sense of urgency don’t have to be felt by all. This op-ed I’m writing will go to a lot of places, along with my personal and passionate plea that the people we, as a whole, have elected to positions to do something, in fact, do just that—something. Something that makes a positive change, that eliminates the anxieties my son has to feel knowing his education is a constant political game resting in the hands of the often uninformed.

And when the opportunity presents itself to share the facts, don’t be shy. The fate of a really big list of important stuff rests at the tip of someone’s ball-point pen.

Cactus High powers past rival Peoria in football playoffs

BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF For the second time in three weeks, Cactus High defeated rival Peoria Highl.

In the 4A football quarterfinals Nov. 15, the speedy Cobras struck to a 34-7 win.

Making the win all the more impressive was that it took place at Peoria.

After allowing the Peoria Panthers a touchdown early in the first quarter, the Cactus defense muscled up and shut down Peoria. The Cobras rolled up 34 unanswered points to march to the semifinals.

Special teams came through as Antonio Pratt put Cactus on the board with a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Cactus blocked another Peoria punt for a safety.

Early in the third quarter, senior quarterback Conner Cordts connected on a 77-yard touchdown pass to Jacob

1, when the Panthers had the Cobras on the ropes early. Cactus High’s comeback was more dramatic two weeks

before, as the Cobras trailed 14-0 at the half.

Cordts rallied Cactus in the second half Nov. 1. The Cobras scored 20 unanswered points, including 14 in the fourth quarter. Cordts delivered the knockout punch with a 55-yard touchdown pass to take the lead in the waning minutes of the game.

When the two met again in the highly-anticipated quarterfinals, Cactus’ lockdown defense dialed it up. The defense, led by defensive coordinator Brian Belles, has held opponents under 14 points in four straight games.

That defense and an explosive offense look to push for a state championship.

Next up, the 10-2 Cactus Cobras battle No. 6 Mesquite High of Gilbert at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22. The site of the semifinals game was not available at press time.

Matheson turned his focus to training for the state championship meet on Nov. 8.

He finished third in the 500-yard freestyle and fourth in the 200-yard IM. Matheson will now hunker down for several months in club swimming and take part in the process of choosing where he will swim in college after graduating in 2021. He already has several college offers and took a few visits as well. Dilworth said Matheson will make a coach happy wherever he decides to go.

“He’s really talented, and has the work ethic and natural skill to succeed,” Dilworth said.

“But it’s the other stuff that makes him a good teammate.”

Mustang swimmer trained at US Olympic pool

Daniel Matheson, a junior swimmer for Sunrise Mountain, was one of a select few athletes across the United States to work out for several days at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado from Oct. 24-27.

Matheson was one of 96 high-schoolaged athletes from around the country, selected by their top times in different meets, to go to the training center in Colorado Springs on an all-expenses-paid trip.

There, he spent several hours each day fine-tuning his strokes, fitness and the mental aspect of swimming, with high-level coaches and instructors there every step of the way.

He also saw just how many great swimmers there are across the country.

“I’m used to doing pretty well and finishing pretty high in high school meets,” Matheson said. “But there, everybody’s out to do their best and you’re sharing the lane with so many good swimmers. It’s motivating.”

Sunnyslope tames Tigers in volleyball championship

Just a year removed from a devastating loss on the road to a championship title, the No. 6 Sunnyslope volleyball team celebrated its much-anticipated championship win, defeating No. 1 Millennium 15-25, 25-21, 25-18, 1425 and 16-14 in the 2019 AIA 5A Girls Volleyball Championship Final.

The Vikings found themselves in the same situation going into the finals as they were during the 2018 postseason wrap-up. Only, they lost last year’s championship game to Millennium, who was making its foray into 5A play.

This year’s title was a bittersweet treat, but to earn it with a side of revenge was an even greater delight.

“They’re such a good team, so it’s hard to describe just how much this means,” said Sunnyslope junior Michelle Jung.

Down 13-7 in a final set to 15, the Vikings seemed all but finished. Even the Vikings coach thought so.

“I was kind of looking at the score like ‘Dang it, we’re done, this is over,’ but they never gave up,” coach Amber LeTarte said.

The Vikings, though, won six consecutive points to force a tie, even faced a Millennium match point down 14-13.

But in the eleventh hour of the game, after a Millennium player’s jump-spike hit went fluttering out of bounds - the Vikings knew they snagged the championship title and swarmed the floor in celebration.

believed so much in ourselves no matter the score and held together,” Jung said.

While top-seeded Millennium mostly ran dominant through its 2019 5A regular season, Sunnyslope previously beat the Tigers 2-, during a midseason tournament. However, they knew it would be even more difficult to take down the defending champions in the postseason title match.

But, Sunnyslope retooled to take the second set, minding themselves not to miss the same shots they did during the first round. They even took an early lead, at one point reaching a 21-14 lead. But the girls kept a cognizant eye on the court to sustain playing great defense - including stepping it up a few notches with some effective blocking.

“That was amazing, just getting touches off the block and going after everything,” LeTarte exclaimed

The Vikings continued to dominate in the third set, breezing to a relatively-easy third-set win and deflating the Tiger team, who previously did not trail during any matches all tournament.

But, Millennium would not go away so quietly. A bitter battle to the end ensured between the two teams, but ultimately the Tigers pulled away and forced a tiebreaker.

The win constitutes a storybook finish for the Vikings, who LeTarte disclosed had an ‘up-and-down’ season with injuries and tough losses.

Several pivotal seniors, who contributed much to the program, played their last game wearing Sunnyslope’s black and green colors: The team plans to honor those girls through the start of next season. However, the Vikings are still young and many of the team’s best players will return next season.

They aim to be back-to-back championship-title winners and expect to hold the gold ball again in 2020.

“It means a lot because we want to be right back here again next year,” Jung affirmed.

‘The Report’ breaks down Senate investigation

There is no “Hollywood-ization” in Vice Studios’ upcoming film “The Report,” which is set to receive a limited theatrical release and hit Amazon Prime Video later this month.

At least that’s what Daniel J. Jones said.

According to writer/director Scott Z. Burns, who took some liberties in his sucessful condensed version in the film documenting the seven-year journey, Jones, a former U.S. Senate Select Committee chairman and intelligence staffer experienced.

“There’s so much drama involved,” Jones said during a press junket at Mountain Shadows Resort in Phoenix.

“The Report” stars Adam Driver as Jones, who was tasked by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Annette Bening) with investigating the Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) Detention and Interrogation Program implemented in the years after 9/11. Resulting in a 6,700-page report released in a 525-page summary, nicknamed “the torture report,” late 2014.

Also in the Steven Soderbergh-produced investigative drama—recently screened at the Scottsdale International Film Festival and the Arizona Science Center—is an ensemble cast that includes Jon Hamm, Sarah Goldberg, Michael C. Hall, Douglas Hodge, Fajer Kaisi, Ted Levine, Jennifer Morrison, Tim Blake Nelson, Linda Powell, Matthew Rhys, T. Ryder Smith, Corey Stoll and Maura Tierney.

The film is told in a nonlinear fashion, featuring two timelines: Jones’ quest to bring the results of the investigation to the public, as well as the CIA’s “enhanced interrogation” program as it unfolds.

“It’s basically the story of someone overcoming a succession of obstacles,” Burns said. “The more invested he (Jones) gets and the more harrowing the truths he discovers, the more im-

portant it becomes to get those out.”

But it was originally conceptualized over half a decade ago as a more satirical film akin to Stanley Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb,” Burns said. At that time he planned to focus on James Mitchell and Bruce Jessen, the two psychologists who were reportedly inexperienced with interrogation, yet were paid more than $80 million to spearhead the CIA’s program.

Burns said he essentially scrapped everything and started anew when the Senate released its report in late 2014.

He was shocked to discover that it was a “very well-funded and sort of diabolically conceived program.”

He ultimately reached out to Feinstein’s office in hopes of speaking with Jones, with whom he said he struck a rapport. He then redirected his attention to the investigation, inspired instead by the films of Sidney Lumet and

works like Alan J. Pakula’s “The Parallax View” and “All the President’s Men” as well as Sydney Pollack’s “Three Days of the Condor.”

“It struck me as an amazing story that was timely and significant beyond just the CIA’s program,” Burns said.

Jones, who also met with some of the film’s actors, said he was impressed with Burns’ attention to detail. The director, he said, “was already pretty steeped in the weeds by the time we connected.”

During Burns’ research, according to press notes, he met and spoke with military intelligence, Navy SEALs, psychologists, lawyers, senators, journalists, John McCain’s chief of staff, and a human rights investigator at Harvard.

The film ultimately compiled hours of interviews with military and human rights experts as well as more than 120 different written sources, though it was primarily driven by the Senate report

itself.

“I kind of geeked out on just talking to him (Burns) because so few people did read the report, and he was asking questions about footnotes and context, books he’d read, so I knew that it was in good hands,” explains Jones, who was at the time tasked with speaking to the press and academics about the report.

With the film’s release nearing, Jones wants audiences to take away an understanding of the importance of governmental checks and balances, as well as to look into the details of the report itself.

“We hope that, and I hope that, people watch the film and want to learn more and they take the lessons of the report itself and what Scott did and apply it to current problems and future problems,” said Jones, who is now president and founder of research and investigative advisory The Penn Quarter Group and nonprofit public-interest investigative organization Advance Democracy Inc. “I guess the way that I look at it and the way that the movie sort of ended for me is that there are sort of two things that coexist,” Burns adds. “One is that our system, as flawed as it may be, can yield really remarkable results.

“There’s a line in the movie about ‘what country in the world would even do a report like this?’ Or as Sen. Feinstein said—and she said this in her speech on the day the report came out—that this program and what the CIA did are a stain, but that America is unique in that it’s able to acknowledge its mistakes.

“So on one hand, I hope that people look at it and are angry about what we did, but I also hope that they’re hopeful and motivated to see what we can be.”

“The Report” received a limited theatrical release on Nov. 15. It will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video starting Nov. 29.

Next to losing our ability to remain independent and keep active, memory loss and a declining ability to concentrate are two of our most common fears associated with getting older. According to Neuroscientists, between the ages of 30 and 90, some of our brain cells begin to decrease in size. However, the majority of memory-related problems associated with age are actually caused by poor concentration, motivation or anxiety and stress.

Your memory is like any other muscle. You need to use it to function at an optimum level and in the case of memory, there’s a lot of truth in the old adage: ‘use it or lose it’. So, how can you get your memory back on track and stay sharp?

A lot of studies have found that exercise plays a big role in improving your memory. When you get your body moving not only your body will benefit, but your brain will too! If you don’t already exercise, start slow with gentle, short walks, and build up from there.

And if you do – challenging yourself!

We get told all the time about the importance of drinking enough water during the day, and there are many good reasons for it! But did

you know that dehydration can affect your memory? To make drinking water easier, aim to have a full glass with every meal and in between meals too.

Doing activities like reading, playing an instrument, a game of cards, chess and board games – are linked to a lower risk of Dementia. But it’s important to not just stick to things you know – learn something new, and give your brain something challenging to get stuck into.

Making manageable healthy changes to your diet and you should feel benefits in all sorts of ways – including better memory and a sharper brain.

By choosing to consume vegetables, fruits, fresh poultry, fish, whole grains, olive oil and even wine (but not too much), you’ll be supplying your body and brain with a wide variety of nutrients – the key to good brain health!

Making sure you get enough shuteye is important for both your physical and mental health. If you don’t get enough sleep each night, in the short term it can affect the decisions you make and how well you learn and remember information. If you find it hard to get enough sleep on a night and get to bed early, taking naps (even for as little as 20 minutes) can make a difference to how you feel and give you more mental clarity.

WalletHub, an online finance and money magazine, ranked Glendale at No. 39 in the United States in an article titled “2019’s Best & Worst Places for Veterans to Live.” Glendale was ranked ahead of cities like Seattle and Nashville.

According to the Veterans Association, there are over 19.2 million veterans currently living in the United States, many of whom face challenges in reacclimating to normal civilian life and finding gainful employment.

The study by WalletHub ranked the cities several categories like employment of quality of life, each with their own individual score.

Glendale’s highest individual catergory was veterans employment, where it ranked No. 9. This came as no surprise to American Post 29 adjutant Dee Hoisington.

She said veterans often come into the American Legion and post “help wanted” signs to help ease veterans back into the workforce.

“Some of them have businesses that they opened up or run, and they want to hire veterans like themselves to help out and because they know some of their characters,” she said.

Also important to veterans in the study was quality of life.

Part of that quality of life in Glendale consists of the willingness of the city’s members to welcome the veterans back as part of regular society.

Walter Coley, the president of the Retired Enlisted Association’s Chapter 34 in Arizona, said Glendale and other West Valley residents are very

welcoming. Not only do they accept veterans as a part of the community, but they embrace them. So much so that he decided to move back to the area after he retired.

“The friendliness, culture of friendliness was what stood out more than anything else. It was a culture of giving back, not just to veterans, but to a lot of different people. That made me want to be here,” Coley said.

Programs for veterans in the area do not just stop in Glendale immediately after they arrive back home.

One such initiative is the Missing in American Project, which buries unclaimed veterans who pass away with full military honors. President Linda Smith said people from all throughout the West Valley will show up to the burial events, both as an homage to the fallen and as a show of solidarity to the veterans in the area.

“Some of them are thankful and want to talk to us and shake our hands, while others get emotional because one of their brothers in arms has been taken care of. There’s a lot of different reactions, but really a lot of it is just being thankful that they have someone at their final moments,” she explained.

Overall, Hoisington said there are always improvements to be made for the welcoming of veterans back into Glendale after the war. But, she said, Glendale is making strides to do its part.

“I know if I walk down the street wearing my cap, people will stop and say something. They’re always generally pleasant and nice, so that way it’s a good place,” she said.

O.U.R. Phoenix Rescue Run to fight human trafficking

Organizers of an upcoming 5k race in Peoria have two goals: raise awareness about human trafficking and raise funds to battle the problem.

The race kicks off at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 7, at the Peoria Sports Complex, 16101 N. 83rd Avenue. The kid’s run starts at 9:50 a.m. Registration includes a medal, T-shirt, raffle entry, snacks, photos to download and free kids zone for racers.

Registration is $40 in advance or $45 on race day. Kids run registration is $15 in advance or $20 on race day. All proceeds go to Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R.) to prevent human trafficking. For more information and to register, visit ourphoenixrescuerun. com.

The first three years of the event raised a total of $38,000, used in efforts to rescue and rehabilitate victims of human trafficking. Trista Kruckenberg is the O.U.R. Phoenix Rescue Run event director.

She said until recently, she was oblivious to the human trafficking problem in the U.S. Several years ago, her friend in another state put on a 5k run to benefit O.U.R., and Kruckenberg followed the progress on social media.

That’s also when she learned about the issue of human trafficking.

“I didn’t even know this was a problem in our world,” she said. “It’s such a dark thing, it’s not really on people’s radar.”

Later, she came across Elizabeth Smart’s book about her first-hand account of being abducted and enduring being raped by her captor for months. Kruckenberg said the story inspired her to dig deeper into the subject.

“The more I learned, I realized good people don’t even know what’s going on,” she said.

“It’s been eye-opening. We just go through our day to day and life seems good and safe, but for so many, it’s not that way.”

Kruckenberg wondered what she could do to help. She reached out to her friend and found out how she could put on a similar 5k here in the Phoenix area. That was four years ago, the first year the O.U.R. Phoenix Rescue Run was put on. Since then, it’s grown and the money raised has helped free children who were enslaved and assisted in rehabilitation efforts.

O.U.R., a national nonprofit founded in 2013, hosts various events all over the country to raise funds, and it also partners with law enforcement to rescue those trapped in human trafficking.

O.U.R.’s Underground Jump Team consists of former CIA, Navy SEALs and Special Ops operatives that lead coordinated identification and extraction efforts.

According to O.U.R., human trafficking is $150 billion industry and is set to surpass drugs in the next couple of years. Over 30 million people sold

in trafficking with 2 million being children who are sold as sex slaves.

Nicki Blackhurst is the O.U.R. Arizona volunteer team leader who assists Kruckenberg with the Peoria race, and also holds other events in Arizona to spread the message of human trafficking.

“We try to educate the community on various things, even beyond human trafficking, like how to keep your kids safe on the internet, how to get involved on a local level with aftercare, how kids are being targeted in Arizona, and of course what human trafficking looks like in Arizona,” Blackhurst said.

In October, O.U.R. Arizona hosted “The Music and the Message” with keynote speaker Elizabeth Smart and various artists, including Rosevelt Sings and William Joseph. O.U.R. Arizona also hosted its first-ever gala in April, which featured Tim Ballard, founder of O.U.R., and musician Lindsey Stirling.

Through these events, many people in Arizona are learning how to spot human trafficking and also donating to help the cause. Blackhurst added that about 40 percent of the missions for O.U.R. is funded by people who donate monthly.

“Human trafficking in Arizona is very real,” Blackhurst said. “In fact, my husband reported it just last weekend while at a small park in Ahwatukee while he was there with my son.

Predators are getting bolder every day.

They mostly target our children online through various apps and gaming, although you will see the occasionally attempted kidnapping.”

Blackhurst praised the Mesa Police Department for a sting that arrested more than 25 alleged pedophiles.

“Mesa PD went undercover and posed as teenage girls to lure them out.”

‘Yes, No, Grow and Slow’ in our lives and prayers Let’s consider two humorous prayers today with life lessons for all of us. One prayer is about prayer itself. The other is about prayer in the process of maturity in human beings. Often used and seldom understood, prayer and prayers require a bit of explanation and exploration. Let’s get started with this lesson in understanding answers to prayer.

Two missionaries agree, just before they leave for their respective mission fields, once a year they will get together to go hunting on the first day of deer season. They did this for several years together.

One year as they were hunting, they came upon a clearing in the woods to find a very large bear devouring wild berries. The bear heard them, raised himself up to see better and turned to move toward the friends. They quickly became frightened. “What do we do?”

They headed for the woods for protection. They could hear the deep panting of the bear gaining on them with every breath. “What should we do?” one friend asked the other. “Pray!” was the swift reply. They both stopped in their tracks and spoke the following prayer. “Father in Heaven, please make this bear a Christian. Amen!”

The bear then stopped dead in his

tracks. The two missionaries could not hear the bear any longer. They each slowly turned around to observe the bear. The bear was kneeling on the ground with his massive arms folded in quiet reverence. Then they heard a groan from the bear that sounded like: “Father in Heaven, bless this food I am about to partake. Amen.”

The moral of this story is be careful of what you pray for, you might just get it!

One thing I have learned in forty years of ministry is you never want to underestimate the power of prayer.

Our tendency toward self-reliance and skepticism often gets in the way of prayer. We want to be in control, doing everything on our own. But what happens when you aren’t in control? What happens when you have a crisis or need much bigger than your self-sufficiency? Prayer gets God involved. Prayer takes you to a Source and Resource much higher than your limited human resources.

Someone once noted God answers prayer in three ways; “Yes, no, and you’ve got to be kidding!” Can you imagine what we sound like to God in some of our prayers? I think God’s answers to our prayers are more like yes, no, slow or grow. Yes, God is a God who answers prayer. I believe that.

However, when we get the no, grow or slow answer, we need to trust Father God knows best. When you can’t see God’s hand, trust in His character.

Don’t let a few ‘no, slow, or grow’ answers spoil your prayer life!

Here’s a prayer about lifestyle and the process of maturity. “Dear Lord, so far today, I’ve done all right. I haven’t gossiped, haven’t lost my temper, haven’t been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish or overindulgent. I’m very thankful for that. But, in a few minutes, Lord, I’m going to get out of bed. And, from then on, I’m probably going to need a lot more help. Amen.”

Like anything else, Christianity is much easier to preach than to live, isn’t it? It’s easy to go to church. It’s hard to be the church. It easy to read the Bible. It’s much harder to live the Bible.

The inconsistency of knowing and liv-

ing Christianity is what drives others crazy. That’s why Christians are often called hypocrites.

The truth is all people struggle to live out what they know. Every group is full of hypocrisy because human behavior is initially learned and then integrated slowly into how we live. Knowledge starts with the head, then moves to the heart and finally to the feet. The distance between the head and heart is the longest foot in the world. The idea is for what you know to be integrated into behavior exhibited consistently in our lives. It’s a process more than an event. Which includes all people, not just church people.

What you know and desire to do is a belief. What you consistently do is a value. For example, I believe I shouldn’t eat French fries or chips. I believe French fries are strings of carbohydrates, soaked and boiled in saturated fat that can plug up arteries. Now, ask me if I eat fries. Of course, I do.

You see, I have a belief, but it is not a value. How hypocritical, huh? But as we consistently choose the act upon what we know, beliefs turn into values.

We are all works in progress. Can we give one another a little grace on this?

And, besides, if a hypocrite is what is standing between you and God, it could be the hypocrite is closer to God than you are. What often makes us critical of others is we often see ourselves in others.

There you have it, some great wisdom on prayer and allowing prayer to elevate your life. After all, I don’t want you to be running around with a bear behind. (I can’t believe I said that!).

Group is against ‘live-shooter trainings’ at schools

One group of psychologists believes “active-shooter” drills are not an effective way to deal with - and prepare for - potential violence on campus.

Days before yet another horrific school shooting, this one Nov. 14 in the Los Angeles area, Claudia Weiss of the Arizona Association of School Psychologists sent an email regarding National School Psychology Awareness Week Nov. 11–15.

“Recently several West Valley schools have chosen to conduct active-shooter awareness training which is something that, in our professional opinion, is not best practice,” Weiss wrote.

“Our association has developed guidance and best practice documents to help balance meeting safety needs without provoking unnecessary anxiety for relatively rare events such as school shootings.”

When asked to clarify this position, Weiss responded: “The opposition is as follows: 1) Lockdown drills appear to increase ones’ perception that one will be prepared for an emergency situation. 2) Research on

While that document clearly has “simulation” drills as an option, Weiss said she prefers an emphasis on communication.

Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers The National Association of School Psychologist’s “Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers”: High profile acts of violence, particularly in schools, can confuse and frighten children who may feel in danger or worry their friends or loved-ones are at risk. They will look to adults for information and guidance on how to react. Parents and school personnel can help children feel safe by establishing a sense of normalcy and security and talking with them about their fears.

1. Reassure children they are safe.

Emphasize schools are very safe.

Validate their feelings. Explain all feelings are okay when a tragedy occurs. Let children talk about their feelings, help put them into perspective and assist

them in expressing these feelings appropriately.

2. Make time to talk. Let their questions be your guide as to how much information to provide. Be patient; children and youth do not always talk about their feelings readily. Watch for clues they may want to talk, such as hovering around while you do the dishes or yard work. Some children prefer writing, playing music, or doing an art project as an outlet.

Young children may need concrete activities (such as drawing, looking at picture books, or imaginative play) to help them identify and express their feelings.

3. Keep your explanations developmentally appropriate.

• Early elementary school children need brief, simple information should be balanced with reassurances their school and homes are safe and adults are there to protect them. Give simple examples of school safety like reminding children about exterior doors being locked, child monitoring efforts on the playground and emergency drills practiced during the school day.

• Upper elementary and early middle school children will be more vocal in asking questions about whether they truly are safe and what is being done at their school. They may need assistance separating reality from fantasy. Discuss efforts of school and community leaders to provide safe schools.

• Upper middle school and high school students will have strong

and varying opinions about the causes of violence in schools and society. They will share concrete suggestions about how to make school safer and how to prevent tragedies in society. Emphasize the role students have in maintaining safe schools by following school safety guidelines (e.g. not providing building access to strangers, reporting strangers on campus, reporting threats to the school safety made by students or community members, etc.), communicating any personal safety concerns to school administrators and accessing support for emotional needs.

4. Review safety procedures. This should include procedures and safeguards at school and at home.

Help children identify at least one adult at school and in the community to whom they go if they feel threatened or at risk.

5. Observe children’s emotional state.

Some children may not express their concerns verbally. Changes in behavior, appetite and sleep patterns can also indicate a child’s level of anxiety or discomfort. In most children, these symptoms will ease with reassurance and time.

However, some children may be at risk for more intense reactions.

Children who have had a past traumatic experience or personal loss, suffer from depression or other mental illness, or with special needs may be at greater risk for severe reactions than others. Seek the help of mental health professional if you are at all concerned.

6. Limit television viewing of these events. Limit television viewing and be aware if the television is on in common areas. Developmentally inappropriate information can cause anxiety or confusion, particularly in young children. Adults also need to be mindful of the content of conversations they have with each other in front of children, even teenagers and limit their exposure to vengeful, hateful and angry comments might be misunderstood.

7. Maintain a normal routine. Keeping to a regular schedule can be reassuring and promote physical health. Ensure children get plenty of sleep, regular meals and exercise.

Encourage them to keep up with their schoolwork and extracurricular activities but don’t push them if they seem overwhelmed.

Suggested points to emphasize when talking to children

• Schools are safe places. School staff works with parents and public safety providers (local police and fire departments, emergency responders, hospitals, etc.) to keep you safe.

• We all play a role in the school safety. Be observant and let an adult know if you see or hear something makes you feel uncomfortable, nervous or frightened.

• Although there is no absolute guarantee something bad will never happen, it is important to understand the difference between the possibility of something happening and probability it will affect you (our school community).

• Sometimes people do bad things hurt others. They may be unable to handle their anger, under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or suffering from mental illness. Adults (parents, teachers, police officers, doctors, faith leaders) work very hard to get those people help and keep them from hurting others. It is important for all of us to know how to get help if we feel really upset or angry and to stay away from drugs and alcohol.

• Stay away from guns and other weapons. Tell an adult if you know someone has a gun. Access to guns is one of the leading risk factors for deadly violence.

• Violence is never a solution to personal problems. Students can be part of the positive solution by participating in anti-violence programs at school, learning conflict mediation skills and seeking help from an adult if they or a peer is struggling with anger, depression, or other emotions they cannot control.
