Task force to examine Gilbert’s social ills

A

teacher, a pastor and a former cop are among the members of an 11-member task force handpicked to address social welfare issues in Gilbert.

The Community Engagement Task Force met for the first time March 7 for introductions and to learn about each other’s strengths to help them accomplish their

mission: identifying gaps and resources in Gilbert to help those suffering from violence, mental and financial struggles and acceptance in the community.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said Councilwoman Kathy Tilque, Council’s liaison to the group. “There are times people don’t think these things happen in Gilbert but they do.”

Tilque said 84 people applied to serve on the ad-hoc group. Council appointed

n yet another sign of the relentless increase in housing prices, the Valley’s top market analyst said the average price of a home listed in Gilbert ZIP codes 85297 and 85298 exceeds $1 million, putting it among 28 Valley postal zones with seven-figure list price averages.

“If rising house prices scare you, then the best place not to look is the average price for active listings,” the Cromford Report wrote. “Unless you are made of stern stuff, you should look away now.”

Cromford Report then proceeded to note that the average home list price in 85297 is $1,180, 505 – nearly double the $598,296 average list price in that ZIP code three years ago this month and ranked 20th among its list of high-dol-

Council ignores ethics complaint against mayor

G

ilbert Town Council is ignoring the latest ethics allegation against Mayor Brigette Peterson.

The allegation accused her of lying last year to the investigator who cleared her of five separate ethics violation complaints.

The deadline was last Thursday for at least three council members to ask for an item to be placed on agenda to determine if Peterson violated the Town’s Code of Ethics and impose penalties.

“I do not intend to take action at this time,” Councilwoman Yung Koprowski said. “I think one of the reasons why it’s difficult for any council member to bring forth these ethics complaints is that I feel there would be little change to the town and that’s causing more distraction and harm than we can bring benefits to the town.”

Council members Kathy Tilque and Scott Anderson and Vice Mayor Aimee Yentes did not return calls for comment.

Councilman Scott September three days before the deadline said he hadn’t made up his mind. He said he needed to talk more with the town attorney and would be available on deadline day to comment further. However, when contacted, he didn’t respond.

The complaint is now dismissed with prejudice, according to Town Clerk Chaveli Herrera.

Town Attorney Chris Payne recommended against hiring an outside attorney to investigate the latest complaint, unlike with the previous ones last year, noting that the Council has the investigator’s Ethics Report and all the relevant material in the complaint filed by resident Jim Torgeson.

“Town Council has all the material it needs in order to decide whether Mayor Peterson was untruthful to the investigator, and if so, whether such conduct violated the Code of Ethics,” Payne wrote Council.

“I recommend that the Town Council carefully review the September 2021 Ethics Report, the Ethics Complaint, and the material provided in conjunction with the Ethics Complaint.”

(GSN file photo) cused Peterson of deceiving the investigator when she said she communicated on a Sunday with a developer about his proposal to increase density in an apartment project because she typically don’t bother Town employees on the weekends and needed information in order to respond to concerned residents.

Two of the complaints last year centered on Peterson’s communication with Morrison.

In her emails to Morrison, she said residents had started a petition opposing the project and were looking to hire an attorney to fight the proposal.

Peterson also volunteered to let Morrison know if she found out any more information and she named the resident she considered the “most aggressive” against adding more apartment units. Morrison co-chair Peterson’s mayoral bid and was one of her largest campaign donors.

In his report the investigator stated, “Mayor Peterson does not typically contact Town staff members on weekends. So the mayor reached out to Howard Morrison to determine the procedure posture of the proposal.”

Torgeson, backed up his claim with emails, text messages and phone records from a public records request showing Peterson regularly communicated with staff on weekends, which is Friday to Sunday for Gilbert employees.

“The Council is just embracing a lack of transparency and truth to the public,” Torgeson said. “When you are on the dais, you are acting in your official position.

There is no room for a white lie, there’s no room for a lie of convenience.

“Either you’re telling the truth or not.

What else are you willing to lie about? I don’t care what she ate for lunch, she can lie all she wants about what she ate. But when you’re on that dais I want to know that what comes out of your mouth is the best as you know it,” he continued.

“When you’re saying something as ridiculous, ‘I don’t typically talk to staff on weekends,’ everybody with half a brain would know that is not true.”

Councilman Laurin Hendrix asked the investigator in October if he verified Peterson’s statement, and he said that he did not.

“I don’t believe that Mayor Peterson intends to be untruthful,” Hendrix said last week. “She does need to think about the consequences of her decisions and comments and evaluate their impact. Are they ethical? Are they in the best interest of the community? Leaders must be accountable for their actions, even when those actions are unethical or inappropriate. The mayor is no exception.”

Torgeson is gathering signatures to run for one of four open Council seats. The primary is in August.

Torgeson also has filed a lawsuit seeking to invalidate the $515-million transportation bond that passed by 164 votes in November. He maintained that the Town targeted him and removed his anti-bond signs, which skewed the election results. The suit is pending in the Arizona Supreme Court.

The advisory group is tasked with tackling domestic violence, mental health and suicide prevention, homelessness and low-income challenges, human and sex trafficking and ensuring Gilbert is a welcoming and inclusive community.

Tilque said for the first four or five meetings the group will do a deep dive into each of the topics to identify what needs to be done to create change.

The social issues were identified as top concerns in a Community Needs Assessment commissioned by the Town.

Gilbert’s first Community Needs Assessment in 2014 resulted in the 2018 opening of the Heritage Resource Center, where most services such as medical, dental, counseling and others are free to families in need.

“There’s a huge disconnect with what’s available here versus the rest of the Valley,” said Alexandra Rodriguez, a mental-health therapist. “Hopefully, we’ll bring more services to town.”

Warren, a pastor with a Gilbert church, said joining the group was personal as he had a brother who was homeless and died of fentanyl addiction.

“I want to make the Town more compassionate,” he said.

Watts, a mental-health therapist, said she is passionate about helping people who she sees struggle with so much hurt.

“I find lot of the time people don’t know how to help,” she said. “I want to learn more to be the bridge so people can know how they can help.”

Javier Rodriguez, an SRP employee, said the issues before the group “hit home for me.”

He said he has a teenage daughter who is going through some things and that there is a lack of help available in the community.

Hackett, a Realtor, wanted to address human and sex trafficking. “I was sex trafficked at 17,” she said.

The bulk of the group’s time at the meeting was spent interacting with a Gilbert business consultant who helped identified their strengths that they bring to the task force.

“The role that you play in Gilbert will have significant impact,” JW Rayhons told the group. “You are at the beginning stages of something absolutely wonderful.

Iya Affo. A 15-year resident, she is a social worker and life coach for Red Mountain Behavioral Health Services.

She and her husband have raised three sons in Gilbert and own an orphanage in West Africa. She said all the focus areas hold interest for her but she is especially drawn to inclusively as well as mental health and suicide prevention.

Chris Curley. An 11-year resident, he was a Phoenix cop for 23 years and is now a fraud and abuse investigator for CVS/Caremark. He served 13 years

on an Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and has deep knowledge of trafficking and sexual predators. And because of his professional experience, he feels he has expertise on domestic violence and mental health issues as well.

Katie Hackett. A 10-year resident, she is a self-employed Realtor and notary signing agent. She is a survivor of sex trafficking from age 17 to 25 and understands what the community can do to help. As a mom, she wants to make Gilbert a safe and inviting place for years to come.

Amy Holstein. She is the director of Florence Crittenton Services of Arizona, which supports at-risk and disadvantaged girls and young women with services, including housing, healthcare

and counseling. She also is a trainer for human trafficking education and awareness and for youth mental health first aid. Her focus is homelessness, domestic violence, human trafficking, crisis response and mental health support.

Alexandra Rodriguez. A 21-year resident, she is a trauma and substance abuse therapist with Transformative Counseling and Trauma Healing Services. Her main areas of interest are mental health and suicide prevention.

She’s lost a close friend to suicide and believes there needs to be more prevention services and early intervention.

Javier Rodriguez. A 34-year resident and ex-marine, he works in the technology industry and is employed by Salt River Project. As a youngster his family

moved often due to homelessness issues. All the issues are important to him, he said, but mental health and suicide are atop his list.

Christine Sabel. A 26-year resident, she is an advisor for Chandler Gilbert Community College and is a licensed real estate agent. She’s previously worked for Gilbert Public Schools. She is most interested in domestic violence and wants the community to teach how to empower women.

Sean Warren. A seven-year resident, he is a Realtor and pastor of Community Engagement for Redemption Church. He has worked five years for a rescue mission in Tennessee dealing with people

you’re part of a mission.”

After going around the room with each member listing their strengths, accomplishments and challenges, Rayhons told them, “Your strengths make you unique and the more you live by them, the stronger you will be.

“This is a very strong task force. Understand where you are strong and leverage each other. What you do now will show up years from now. I am thrilled as a resident of Gilbert you all accepted the responsibility to be part of this task force.”

Talks about resurrecting the Town’s Human Rights Commission came about two years ago following weekly protests between Black Lives Matter supporters and pro-police/Trump groups not far from the Municipal Complex.

The Town held a three-day listening session with the community and some people called for bringing back the HRC, which was to address diversity issues and was disbanded after 2017. The HRC was formed shortly after a 1999 beating of a teenager by a white supremacist group of high schoolers in Gilbert called the Devil Dogs.

Bill expanding lethal force for businesses fails

A

rizona lawmakers are not going to give business owners the right to kill vandals who damage or deface their property.

But the reason for that decision is less than clear.

Only 13 of the 16 Senate Republicans voted in support last week for SB 1650.

The proposal by Sen. Michelle Ugenti-Rita sought to expand the ability of not just business owners but their employees to use deadly force beyond saving lives or stopping rapes to criminal damage if the perpetrator also was armed with a deadly weapon or “dangerous instrument.’’

And that latter category, it was pointed out, could include anything that, depending on how it is used, is “readily capable of causing death or serious injury,’’ something that lawmakers debated in committee could include a block of wood or even a pen.

Monday’s vote was a surprise as it reflected what appears to have been a change of heart by Sen. Sonny Borrelli, R-Lake Havasu City.

In committee, Borrelli said he sees the issue through the eyes of business owners who, unless they act, could see their entire livelihoods destroyed. He even recalled the 1992 Los Angeles riots that occurred in the wake of police being acquitted in the beating of Rodney King.

By Monday, though, Borrelli was telling a different story.

“I can understand you use force to save your life, of your friends, your family or another person,’’ he said. “Any kind of reasonable force I will stand for, will stand with.’’

But this, Borrelli said, is different.

He noted that the crime of committing criminal damage is a Class 3 felony. It carries a presumptive prison term of 3.5 years.

“You can replace property,’’ Borrelli said.

“You can’t replace life,’’ he continued.

“This bill is a little on the extreme side.’’

Borrelli said he had hoped that Ugenti-Rita would have “watered down’’ the measure. She did not.

But Ugenti-Rita told Capitol Media Services after the defeat that she sees something quite different in his vote.

“I think he was retaliating because I voted against his bill,’’ she said.

That refers to SB 1457, which dealt with security issues for voting machines.

It came up two votes short on Monday as Ugenti-Rita and Sen. Paul Boyer, R-Glendale, joined with Democrats to vote against it.

Borrelli, for his part, said that has nothing to do with it.

“It’s not spite,’’ he told Capitol Media Services. But he declined to answer other questions, including why his views reversed in the six weeks between the time he supported it in the Senate Judiciary Committee and when it came for a final vote Monday.

Ugenti-Rita also lashed out at Senate President Karen Fann, R-Prescott. She said Fann knew that she was two votes shy of the majority 16 she needed but chose to schedule it anyway.

Fann, however, said there was nothing sinister about that, pointing out that she had delayed a final vote before. And the Senate president said she was trying to get final votes on all Senate measures by Monday so they could go to the House.

GPS teacher offers home to Ukrainian refugees

B

onnie Hickman knows firsthand what the ravages of conflict cause and that prompted her to open her own home to Ukrainians displaced by the invading Russian Army.

So the Gilbert Public Schools sixthgrade teacher saw accounts of the chaos Ukrainian refugees are enduring, she felt compelled to act.

A Mesa resident, Hickman first saw a Facebook post about people donating money to Ukrainians on AirBnb and her effort snowballed from there.

Now, she’s ready to welcome into her home anyone whom the nonprofit working with the rental app sends her way from half a world away.

“If we’re going to make a difference in the world, we better start where we can,” she said.

On Feb. 28, Airbnb announced it would offer free, short-term housing to up to 100,000 refugees fleeing Ukraine.

“These stays will be funded by Airbnb, Inc., donors to the Airbnb.org Refugee Fund, and the generosity of hosts through Airbnb.org,” it announced.

All this started when Hickman read about people purchasing AirBnb rentals in Ukraine for approximately $32 per night. She purchased three nights

“It was one of the ways to get money into the country,” she said.

She said the rentals she purchased in Ukraine were mainly by rescue teams and humanitarian workers helping people escaping the violence.

The couple has been married for more than 30 years and her husband, Ed, served 20 years as a meteorologist in the Air Force.

It’s a place Don and Charlene Udoni of Illinois know all too well since they’ve been coming to Arizona for their beloved Cubs nearly every year since 2008.

The Udonis, who will celebrate their 54th wedding anniversary this October, have been fans of the “North Siders” all their lives.

While the couple became “pretty disgusted” by the lockout, they said they’re “glad to be here.”

“We got to the point where we didn’t care if they were going to start or not,” Charlene said. “But happily, everything turned out and here we are.”

They made the trek from Midlothian, Illinois, about an hour drive from the

Now, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, along with the withdrawal from Afghanistan, Ed said “it really hurts” and feels helpless to watch.

When his wife told him about her idea, he said he’d support her generosity.

“If that’s where your heart is, I’m behind it,” he said.

While he doesn’t think people would want to come to Arizona, he’ll welcome anyone who needs their help.

“They’re more than welcome to come,” he said.

Charlene attributes her love of baseball to her late brother-in-law Bob. She recalled jumping on the L Train at age 12 with him and her sister from their South Side neighborhood.

“For a dollar, I had a full day,” she said.

Unfortunately, her childhood escapades all came to an end after a few day games. “My mother finally caught on to me,” she said.

Although Bob passed away in 2008, Charlene was expecting her sister to arrive for Spring Training on March 22.

s excitement begins to build over next month’s return of the Easter Pageant to the Mesa Arizona Temple after a three-year hiatus, a newly published book offers a detailed look at its evolution across eight decades.

For nearly three years, writers Jill Adair, a Mesa resident and the Temple’s communications director, and Cecily Condie, a former Mesa resident and editor-owner of Inglestone Publishing, combed through hundreds of photos, interviewed scores of people and burrowed through microfilm to produce an homage to a production that draws over 100,000 people over the course of its multi-day presentation.

produce “The Mesa Easter Pageant – 80 Years of Sharing the Story of Jesus the Christ,” a 280-page hardcover book that details both the pageant’s history, and its community impact and historical significance.

From a humble Easter sunrise service, it has evoled into a work that depicts the life of Jesus Christ with a cast of more than 400 people and another 400 other volunteers.

The free pageant this year features a revised script, a new soundtrack specially recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra and a massive stage with new props. It will be presented at 8 p.m. April 6-9 and 12-16, on the north lawn of the Mesa Arizona Temple, 101 South Lesueur. No tickets are needed.

Petty Officer 1st Class Richard Hagerty reenlisted for four years of Navy service aboard USS Constitution while Petty Officer 3rd Class Connor Williams is now serving aboard one of the world’s largest warships, the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson.

“Reenlisting is about having a plan,” said Hagerty. “My plan is to continue serving in the U.S. Navy.”

Williams joined the Navy two years ago and serves as a machinist’s mate.

“I joined the Navy to experience more structure in my life and serve the country,” said Williams.

Growing up in Gilbert, Williams attended Arizona College Prepartory-Eerie Campus and graduated in 2015. Today, Williams relies upon skills and values similar to those found in Gilbert to succeed in the military.

“You cannot take care of others if you don’t take care of yourself,” said Williams.

These lessons have helped Williams while serving in the Navy.

Its popularity has grown so much that 9,600 folding chairs will be set up for each of the nine performances next month.

For a show that has grown in size and stature over time, you’d think its history would be well-established.

But Adair and Condie discovered multiple gaps in the collective memory of pageant and church leaders and decided a meticulously documented history was in order.

They interviewed more than 50 principals in past pageants – such as directors, men who played Jesus, pageant presidents, crew members and costume designers – and sifted through a variety of documents to achieve that goal.

“We also had hundreds of photos,” said.Adair, whose husband, Scott, took many of the photos over the years. “We said we could do 10 volumes, so we included as much as we could, particularly the photos, to make it more than just a historical book.”

Added Condie: “To take 80 years of history and boil it down would be a challenge under any circumstances. But in this case, you add the hundreds of individual stories from a cast of nearly 500 and a crew of almost that many every year and you start to see the magnitude of what it would take to put it together.”

The two women struggled to decide on the best way to present all the information they had acquired, finally opting for a chronological approach.

The book is filled with photos from eight decades of Easter pageants at the Mesa Arizona Temple. (Special to GSN) the Mesa Public Library and the Church Historical Museum in Salt Lake City – is a chat with the oldest person they could find with a connection to the pageant.

He is Grant Gunnell of Mesa, who sang at the sunrise service when he was a senior at Mesa High School in 1944.

Through a painstaking review of microfilmed editions of the Mesa Tribune for 80 years – “We found at least something published about the event from every year,” Adair said – the two women also clear up some historical ambiguities and misconceptions about the pageant.

They found that the pageant has been held every year between 1938 and 2018 except for 1975 – the year the Mesa Temple held an extended open house prior to its rededication after its first major renovation – and became an evening event in 1977.

Prior to embarking on their project, Adair said she and Condie discovered in conversations with former pageant

leaders that they didn’t know answers to some basic questions.

“Cecily and I would look at each other and say, ‘Someone should document the history of the pageant before it’s lost,’” Adair recalled.

“As we uncovered the vast number of articles written in the Tribune and other newspapers, found personal mementoes and letters, and then interviewed individuals who had made contributions over the years, we were able to collect and to verify facts and to even sort out some of the mistaken ideas about the pageant that had been passed down over the years,” Condie said, adding: “The result is not only a clear history of the growth of the annual Easter celebration, it is also a chronicle of what the event has meant to those who have participated and attended and, also, how it has impacted the community as a whole over the past 80 years.”

“It was one of our goals to make the book beautiful because the pageant is so visually beautiful and we wanted to represent that with our book,” Adair added.

Gilbert sweetener company joins NASCAR driver

ne way that JTG Daugherty Racing is preparing for the sweetest NASCAR series yet is by adding Gilbert-based SweetLeaf to their Kroger Racing family of brands.

SweetLeaf, the first and oldest stevia sweetener in the U.S., is partnering with NASCAR driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. to reach a new audience – NASCAR fans.

While NASCAR may not be known for nutritious offerings, SweetLeaf President Michael May said he wants to expand SweetLeaf’s presence to people who probably haven’t been exposed to his brand previously in order to give them the opportunity to make healthier choices.

“We have a marketing slogan and it goes ‘Making the World a Sweeter Place,’” he said. “But for us it’s not our slogan, it’s our mission. We want to improve the world and we want to do it one person at a time by improving the things that are taken into their bodies.”

People can’t choose “better-for-you products” if they don’t know they exist, May said. With NASCAR’s national reach, SweetLeaf’s sponsorship will introduce their products to a new demographic.

“We have to democratize our products,” May added. “The natural channel where we’re number one in, there’s a certain type of consumer that goes into that store. We need to get our brand in front of people who have never heard of SweetLeaf before.”

As someone who has to be in good shape to race, Stenhouse shares the same goal as SweetLeaf in encouraging people to make more health-conscious decisions.

“Our sport is always changing and on the driver’s side there’s a lot of effort in working out and eating healthy,” he said.

Listings under contract averaged $300 per square foot – double what it was just five years ago with 15% of that increase occurring since the 2021 holiday season.

Buyers are not only challenged with finding a home but also navigating the confusing environment to secure it.

List prices are simply marketing tools to gain the largest number of eyeballs on sellers’ properties, the most foot traffic and the greatest online exposure – meaning that winning offers of $100-$200K over asking price are becoming more and more common place.

s kids prepared for spring break March 10, the West and SouthEast Realtors’ WeSERVE Leadership program teamed up with the Rise and Dream Foundation to pack food for 75 children facing food insecurity.

“Some less-fortunate children look forward to school because it provides them with a meal they would’ve otherwise not had due to financial circumstances,” noted a spokesman for the West and SouthEast Realtors.

Items were to students at Gateway Pointe Elementary School in Gilbert. The children are received backpacks filled with food to supplement their meals throughout the break. Food consisting of breakfast, lunch, and dinner items were discreetly placed in the backpacks.

Assuming you have to buy locally after you sell, homes are at least 10 percent cheaper than they’ll be by the end of the year – if not more – and less expensive to finance than they likely will ever be, meaning your payment is MORE affordable today than if you try to wait this out.

You’d have to have a pretty good case for selling and renting right now, especially with the number of programs allowing you to buy before you sell and the expected appreciation you’d lose out on.

Testing the waters has become more and more common with sellers and the need to prepare your home for the market continues to become more and more valuable.

Do they both sell? Absolutely. Are the prices and terms different? Most definitely. Is this a price and terms market?

Highland’s Khamis sets example after injury

O

n Dec. 24, 2019, the last day of a baseball camp, Highland senior third baseman Drake Khamis went back for a flyball when someone then slid and collided into him and broke his leg.

He wanted to quit baseball months earlier, and now, leaving baseball seemed inevitable.

During his freshman year, Khamis started out at Perry High School alongside his best friend and current Highland senior pitcher/outfielder Jack Ellsworth. Throughout his freshman season, he felt unappreciated and didn’t see himself playing a big part of the future and culture of the program.

A transfer to Highland his sophomore year presented a change of scenery, but after not meeting his personal expectations with baseball, he was ready to call it quits.

After breaking his leg and going through three surgeries, Khamis had days upon days to sit and reflect on his future with baseball. Suddenly, his mindset and light switch completely flipped.

“I never realized how much I loved baseball until I literally could not play it,” Khamis said. “So then ever since that, I just had that awakening moment. I’m like, I’m gonna prove everyone wrong.

I’m going to be that guy now.”

After working his way back and showing glimpses of health, Khamis and Ellsworth spent the summer of junior year grinding nonstop, putting in hours of work every day to get ready for the new season.

Unfortunately, junior year came around and it turned out that Khamis was not fully healthy, resulting in a subpar season. His archenemy, disappointment, started to linger around again.

This time, Khamis went beyond himself

Khamis and Kehoe got off on the wrong foot when Khamis first came to Highland. Family and friends of Khamis even had to encourage Kehoe to speak with Khamis because he didn’t think that Kehoe liked him.

“I’m like, ‘Dude, I’m doing this for a reason.

You have the ability, you have great leadership qualities. I just gotta see more of that out of you,’” Kehoe said.

“You’re not emptying your tank so to speak. Khamis reads many books and listens to many podcasts about the art of leadership with the goal of getting his teammates to perform at the highest level possible.

“I wanted to experiment with the intangibles. How what you say can get people to like … subconsciously go to battle for you and with you,” Khamis said.

Ellsworth has been with Khamis every step of the way. He transferred from Perry to Highland after his sophomore year to join Khamis and was also one of the main reasons Khamis didn’t quit baseball.

“He can’t just quit on us, and he has to stay by our side and finish out through high school,” Ellsworth said. “He’s only young once so you don’t want to waste it on other stuff besides sports.”

Ellsworth added that Khamis will do anything for his loved ones and he will cross those boundaries to make sure his loved ones are happy and safe.

Now entering his senior year, Khamis is ready to use his leadership to propel his team to the next level. But more importantly, he is fully healthy for the first time in nearly two years.

“This year, I’m back 110 percent and if things keep going the same way they have in the fall and all the scrimmages, I’m due for a really, really, really good year.”

On March. 2, 2022, Highland lost a heartbreaker to Chandler for its first loss of the young season. While the coaches were sitting around and reflecting on the loss, a text from Khamis was

sent out to the team group chat. “‘Hey, hang in there together, we’re going to win and lose as a team and tonight we proved that the only team that can beat us is us,’” Kehoe said while paraphrasing the text.

This is the kind of approach Khamis plans on having the rest of the season, with the ultimate goal of getting Highland to the playoffs for the first time in over 10 years.

“I’m literally fearless of the ball because I know if I’m fearless, I can help someone be a little less scared. I have to show everyone that if Drake isn’t scared, then I shouldn’t be scared either,” Khamis said.

After this season, Khamis will continue playing baseball at the Division II level at Concordia University Irvine. Until then, look for Khamis to cement his legacy in his final ride with Highland.

Obituaries Thomas P. Gaj

Thomas P. Gaj, 53, of Gilbert AZ passed away on January 14, 2022. Tom, the youngest of 13 siblings, enjoyed his childhood in Hinckley Ohio, graduated from Highland High School and the University of Akron. In 2005, Tom packed his Jeep and drove west. Tom embraced his life in Arizona but never forgot his roots believing that being OhioStrong prepared him for all of life's challenges.

Tom's greatest source of comfort was family and his unending admiration of his parents, striving to model himself after them. He was preceded in death by his parents, and oldest brother and sister.

Tom is survived by his 10 siblings, girlfriend Corri Busby of Gilbert AZ, & Cooper the dog, his constant and loyal companion. Although Tom passed away in Arizona, his wish to be returned to Ohio will be honored with a funeral mass at 10:00 AM on May 23rd at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Ohio followed by interment of ashes at Resurrection Cemetery in Ohio.
