Cox wants to help students in Arizona pay for college
BY FOOTHILLS FOCUS STAFF
As area high school seniors start their last term and are making plans for college, Cox will award 10 Arizona seniors with a $3,500 Cox Diversity Scholarship.
Cox has a long track record of supporting youth and education programs in the communities that Cox serves.
The competitive scholarships require applicants to be on track for graduation with a minimum 2.5-grade point average, provide demonstrated leadership and community service, as well as submit an essay focused on a signiicant leader from their respective diverse community.
To apply for a Cox Diversity Scholarship, visit azfoundation.org/ scholarships. Apply using the “general application,” found at the large button in the middle of the site that says begin your application.
The deadline to apply is March 1.
“At Cox, inclusion, diversity and equity are part of our core values. Over the past nine years, we are thrilled to have awarded more than $300,000 to students in our Southwest region, including Arizona,” said Susan Anable, vice president of government and public affairs, Cox Southwest Region.
“Helping students achieve their educational goals helps make our communities stronger. We’re proud to connect families to opportunities like this one and many others.”
In 2021 Chloe Hiller, an Arcadia High School graduate, received a Cox Diversity Scholarship to help her pursue her dream to become a news producer.
“Being awarded this scholarship not only reduces my inancial burden, but it further motivates me to stay committed to working hard as I pursue a degree in journalism at the University of Arizona,” Hiller said.

Senior leads charge for BC hoops’ success
One of the keys to any great team’s success is leadership.
Boulder Creek High School basBrewer’s leadership. “He’s been phenomenal. He’s our captain, so he has extra responsibilities, and ketball senior captain Hayden Brewer embodies this.
In his third year with the team, Brewer has helped reine the culture and is now a key contributor to the Jaguars’ best starts.
One of four seniors on the team, Brewer said he enjoys leading the young guys on the team.
“We have a lot of potential coming up,” Brewer said.
“And so, I’m just trying to teach them as best I can and just lead and be positive. I’m just proud of these guys. They’re always here on time. They’re always working hard and always focused.”
He credited his team’s success to experience.
“And then in the spring, summer and fall, we spent time together just playing games, practicing, lifting and getting stronger,” he added. The team is shooting to win the conference. “They’re not worried about themselves,” said Justin Collard, coach. “They just worry about the team.” He has been particularly impressed by he makes sure everybody’s here on time. And he just he goes above and beyond. He’s ready for the real world.” The future and real world are coming soon for the 6-foot-3 guard and forward. Brewer said he’s “looking to play basketball at the lower level, like D3, NAIA.” This season, Brewer is trying to keep his priorities straight. “I don’t have much of a personal goal,” Brewer said. “I’m just focused on the team. So, whatever I can do personally, depending on the game, to help the team win is what I’m going to try to do and academically just get good grades. Grades are what get you into college. They show we’re student athletes and that comes irst.” Brewer credits this maturity to his fa-

Brewer’s teammates recognize his inluence. His teammates have taken notice to the effect Brewer has on the team. “Hayden is great,” said the team’s leading scorer, sophomore Roan McKenzie. “He’s started since his sophomore year. So, he has a lot of experience. And he, like the other seniors, bring me up if I’m doing poorly. They just make me stay positive. Just keep me high.” Collard said the team’s continued dediAs one of four seniors on the team, captain Hayden cation, exempliied by players like Brewer, Brewer said he enjoys leading the young guys on the stands out to him. team. So, it’s easy to make kids like the game because they’re good at it. They’re such a special group of kids. I’m a pretty lucky guy.”
