FREDERICKSBURG FOOTBALL
Billies football set to battle through tough district By Cary Burgess Standard-Radio Post Sports Editor The Fredericksburg High School varsity boys football team will compete in a heavily loaded District 134A Division I that consists of several traditional powerhouse programs such as Comal Davenport, Austin LBJ and Kerrville Tivy. The Battlin’ Billies are coming off a 3-8 overall record and 2-4 district finish last year. This year, the football landscape will look a lot different from years past. District realignment forced Fredericksburg to compete with a host of teams that are generally aligned with the Austin area. Davenport will be the lone program to hail from the San Antonio metro area. Kerrville Tivy will be in the same district as Fredericksburg for the first time in nearly two decades, renewing a storied rivalry that dates nearly 100 years. The new landscape provides a unique opportunity for the Billies to perform under the Friday Night Lights. “It’s definitely a very, very tough district,” FHS head football coach Bill Wilder said. “It’s one of the tougher 4A districts in the state. Every single week, we seem to have that Austin corridor in our schedule and then there’s Davenport and Tivy and Canyon Lake and those schools have been pretty stout contenders even at the 5A level like Tivy.” Austin LBJ is now in Fredericksburg’s district again for the first time in five years. “They have been our nemesis in
the playoffs for the last few years,” Wilder said. “Now we are in a district with them, so it's definitely going to have its challenges and we are in unfamiliar territory within Austin Northeast and Taylor. We haven’t seen Taylor in a long time.” The Billies lost 17 lettermen to graduation last year; 13 returning lettermen are on the roster this season. The offense returns three starters while the defensive unit returns six starters. “Our expectation is to continuously get better,” Wilder said. “We have a pretty much new offensive line and we are trying to get those guys up to speed. As they get better, we are going to get better.” Kress Mohr is expected to become the Billies’ leader at quarterback once again and has varsity experience for the past two seasons. “We’ve got a returning quarterback in Kress Mohr,” Wilder said.
“We have a lot of returning receivers and a returning running back who saw playing time last year.” There are some new faces offensively that simply need time to mature on the field. “We’ve got some inconsistency offensively and we will need to get some of the kids used to playing at the varsity level,” Wilder said. “Defensively, most of our defensive line is back this year. We moved Eli King to inside linebacker and Dylan Fowler had some experience last year playing inside linebacker, too. We’ve got some new faces there, but also a mix of familiar faces to bring some depth to us.” The secondary is an area where faces are still changing. “In the secondary, we’ve had to move some people around due to graduation,” Wilder said. “It’s kind of a mix in the secondary of learning how to gel and being more consistent and we are hopeful that we,
as a team, will continue to get better week after week.” Wilder doesn’t focus on any specific game on the calendar as being the most important game to watch. “For me, it’s week by week and every single game is important,” Wilder said. “We want to be able to play our very best game every week and get out there and compete and come away with a victory no matter who we are playing from week to week.” For the Billies, the new landscape is certainly tough, but presents the team with an opportunity to grow up quickly. “As a team, we are just trying to grow up and sort things out,” Wilder said. “The chemistry has been good and the effort has been good in practice and they’ve had a great attitude. That’s what we need right now to improve.” FHS will open its regular season at home against Bandera at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, at FHS Stadium.

FREDERICKSBURG VOLLEYBALL
FHS volleyball brings youth, confidence to court By Dalton Sweat Regional Editor
Youth will be easy to find on the Fredericksburg volleyball roster this season. It might be a little harder to spot once the Battlin’ Billies step onto the court. With only four returning starters and one senior on the 13-player varsity roster, Head Coach Jamie Kneese knew Fredericksburg would have plenty of new faces in important roles this season. What has surprised her is how quickly some of those young players have looked comfortable in them. “You might not realize that they’re so young when you’re watching them,” Kneese said. “We have some freshmen who own the court, but in a really positive way.” Fredericksburg is replacing three seniors from last season in setter Kate Roemer, middle Alexandria “Allie” Page-Tamez and right-side hitter Willa Heep. Page-Tamez provided a strong presence at the net, while the left-handed Heep gave opposing defenses a different look from the right side. The Billies return four starters, including their lone senior, Lila Aldrich. A defensive specialist, Aldrich gives the young Billies experience on the back row. Kneese said Aldrich’s leadership is often more visible in what she does than what she says. “She’s a leader without being really loud about it, which I think is pretty special, because the girls just follow what she does,” Kneese said. “She kind of shows them how to do it, and then she does it, and they all trust her.” Kneese said Aldrich has also
gotten better at recognizing a mistake and quickly making an adjustment, something she hopes the younger players pick up from watching their senior. Junior Jorie Jenschke is another key returner and someone Kneese expects to keep on the floor as much as possible. Jenschke will play outside hitter and defensive specialist this season after working throughout the offseason to improve her allaround game. “Her serve receive is incredible, especially for her being a hitter and then playing back row as well,” Kneese said. “Her serve receive is top two on the team right now, which makes a huge difference. It makes it really hard to take her off the court.” The freshmen have also wasted little time working their way into the lineup. Allie Seidenberger is playing
middle and has already emerged as Fredericksburg’s leader in blocks. Kneese has also been impressed by her ability to read the opposing defense and find open spots on the court. “She always plays really hard, and she has this incredible ability to read the opponent’s court and put the ball where she sees the hole,” Kneese said. “She sees it, and she’s aggressive. Definitely doesn’t play like a freshman.” Fellow freshman Mackenzie Love has seen time at outside hitter and defensive specialist. Kneese said Love has been consistent, keeping the ball in play and finding ways to score with smart placement. “She’s keeping the ball in play a lot, and she’s placing the ball really smart,” Kneese said. “She’s getting a bunch of kills that way.” With so many young players taking on varsity roles, Fredericks-
burg has used the early part of the season to get them as many gamespeed repetitions as possible. The Billies have faced tough competition and taken some early losses, but Kneese said she has seen the team begin to come together. “We definitely want to get lots of touches and lots of contacts early in the season to kind of bring the team together and make sure everyone’s meshing,” Kneese said. “We’ve played some pretty tough teams so far, and we’ve come up short in several of them. But ultimately, making progress together as a team and seeing that chemistry and them meshing together and building on that has definitely been happening.” The next step is learning to stay aggressive when points become difficult or the Billies are forced out of the system. “The goal is to gain that confidence to really put themselves out there and be more aggressive on offense when it might not feel perfect,” Kneese said. “Not to back off as the rally gets longer or as the set goes on. Just keep staying aggressive.” While the Billies are still developing their chemistry on the court, Kneese said there has been little work needed when it comes to how the players get along away from it. “They really genuinely care about each other, and you can see it,” Kneese said. “They cheer hard for each other, and you can tell when they’re happy for each other when they do something good. And it’s everybody. I don’t know that I’ve ever had a full group of kids who genuinely just really want to see each other succeed.”

FREDERICKSBURG CROSS COUNTRY
FHS boys cross country looking to repeat By Cary Burgess Standard-Radio Post Sports Editor The Fredericksburg High School varsity boys cross country team is coming off a district championship last season and a new district landscape awaits as the Billies try to win it all for the second season in a row. “We were the district champions last year and we returned everyone back in a bid to repeat this year,” FHS head boys cross country coach Jason Roemer said. “We have everyone back from the district championship team, which is exciting.” The new district landscape features a nearby foe in Kerrville Tivy. “We inherited a really good ath- ing door of track and cross country letic program in Kerrville Tivy,” Ro- coaches lately but they have a new emer said. “They have had a revolv- coach in Dee Heiner and they will
be competitive. Davenport is not new to us and we won district but they won regionals last year. It will be a very competitive district.” Ivan Cop returns as the top runner for the Billies so far this season. “Ivan (Cop) was in the third spot last season and he put a lot of work in during the summer,” Roemer said. “He’s doing really well and it is his senior year which is motivating him to run faster this year.” Roemer likes the entire group of runners he has in the remaining positions on the varsity roster. “We have a pack of really strong runners that are light years away in terms of experience and we also have Cody Helmers returning as
he splits time with football and cross country this year,” Roemer said. “Cody (Helmers) wants to help the team and I think he will. I admire him for what he is doing by running for us and playing football as a running back at the same time.” see BOYS XC page 12

Senior leadership expected to anchor FHS girls’ cross country program By Cary Burgess Standard-Radio Post Sports Editor The Fredericksburg High School girls cross country team enters the 2026 fall season with a mixture of seniors and a host of freshmen and sophomores on the varsity team. The junior varsity program is filled with freshmen and sophomore girls ready to work their way up the chain as the season progresses. Fredericksburg’s immediate district remains virtually the same with the exception that Kerrville Tivy enters the district race in place of New Braunfels Long Creek High School, which moved up to Class 5A in the latest UIL realignment. “The main change for us is going to be Kerrville Tivy, who was 5A and dropped down to 4A,” FHS head girls cross country coach Dan Aldrich said. “As far as that’s concerned, that is a big change. Kerrville has been 5A competing at the 5K level and not allowed to race at the two-mile distance like Class 1A4A, so they have been training at higher miles and now will be running at lower distances, so I can see a big confidence boost at Tivy because they are confident and excited to compete at the 4A level and a shorter race distance than years past in 5A.” Aldrich expects the district race to be very competitive this year. “It was already tough to get out of the district and it’s going to be a little tougher now with Tivy in the

mix,” Aldrich said. Despite tougher competition at the district level, the team’s expectations remain the same as they have always been during Aldrich’s time at FHS. “The expectation doesn’t change,” Aldrich said. “We have set a high standard with the girls and the expectation is that, at the end of the season, we should be racing at the state meet as a team and we want to finish on the podium.” Canyon is the projected favorite to win the Class 4A division at state this year, according to preseason polls. Canyon Randall is picked second and Salado is picked third, followed by Fredericksburg checking in at No. 4 in the Cross Country Coaches Association of Texas preseason poll. “Each of those groups ahead of us lost one senior but they had some-
where right there that was just as fast as the seniors they lost,” Aldrich said. “Canyon is the favorite to win the state and they are the favorite again. Knocking one of those three programs off the podium is going to be a huge task, but that’s our goal. We want to try and get back up there.” District rival Davenport is ranked No. 5 right behind Fredericksburg, and Wimberley is ranked No. 9 in the preseason CCCAT polls. “Rankings are one thing in the preseason but now that we are starting to run races, people are going to start seeing times and the rankings will work things out as the season goes along,” Aldrich said. “What matters is where we are ranked when the season comes to an end in October and November.” Seniors Abbi Brown and Madalyn Kovar have set the fastest times so
far in the top two running spots, followed closely by junior Mary Catherine Cop in the No. 3 position for FHS. “What we will need to find out is who will be our actual leader of the team this year and then figure out who will be running in our two, three, four and five positions,” Aldrich said. “Right now, the girls are competing really well together and I’m excited about the team this season because they all get along and they all believe in what our vision is. They are pushing each other and encouraging each other. We need to run well as a pack. If we do that, we will be fine.”
Ranch High School in Liberty Hill on Friday, Aug. 14. “James (Trim) and Kyle (Moellendorf ) had great middle school track careers and I’m excited for them to finally get to high school,” Roemer said. “We have kind of coached both
of them up on the strategy of racing and they just need more experience as the season unfolds. Those are two really good freshmen who are going to earn points for us if they stay healthy.” Roemer likes what he has seen
so far this late summer. “I like where we are and I like our depth,” Roemer said. “They are pushing each other in practice and our team has a really good competitive environment, which we need.”

Just like all of the other programs at Fredericksburg High School, the district landscape has changed due to district realignment by the UIL. “We added Kerrville Tivy and they are traditionally a very solid program,” FHS head tennis coach Randall King said. “They are transitioning with a new coach coming in this year, but they are traditionally a pretty good team so that changes the landscape of things a little bit.” Even though Tivy is a new addition, common foes like Wimberley and Davenport return to the district. “Wimberley and Davenport are always going to be challenges,” King said. The girls’ squad is poised to compete with the best that the district has to offer. “Our girls are traditionally pretty solid and we’ve got really good depth this season,” King said. “I’ve got good senior leadership with Ava Collins and Caroline McDade. They were state qualifiers last spring. I’m very happy with where our girls are right now.” For the boys’ team, there is a mixture of returning experience and new faces this year. “It’s split down the middle as I have three seniors and a junior and then we are young after that,” King said. “Chandler Carnett, Liam Ahern and Max Hogan are our seniors and Brady Bonn is a junior and was a letterman last year.” Ashton Mazurek, Will Martin, Max Duncan and Isaac Gold have
seen varsity playing time this season, too. “They are younger players who are only going to get better with time,” King said. “They are solid, but as the season goes on, we need improvement out of the lower half of that boys’ ladder and I think we will see it. They just need more match play.” For both squads, senior leadership is the key for the rest of the team to be successful. “Our seniors are our strength,” King said. “All of our top players are all very experienced and have spent a lot of time on the court this summer. They came in ready in August to get the season started.” The philosophy does not change despite a new district opponent on the court. “I’m always going to say that my expectation is to make a run in the playoffs,” King said. “The kids will tell you that they want to make the state tournament and the potential is there if we continue to improve and make it to the regional tournament. We need to be playing our best tennis when that time comes.”

HERITAGE FOOTBALL
High football expectations for Heritage Eagles By Cary Burgess Standard-Radio Post Sports Editor The Heritage Eagles varsity boys football team is counting on senior leadership to help the Eagles improve upon their 8-3 finish last year in TAPPS Division III District 4. “This year, we always have at the top of our goal pyramid to win the state title,” Heritage head football coach and athletic director Tim Shipman said. “A couple of years ago, we made it there and got beat and became the state runner-up and then last year, in a heartbreaker, got beat by Brazosport. We lost that on pretty much the last play of the game by not punching it into the end zone in the state semifinals, so I think this
year’s team is as hungry as they have ever been to try and reach that top goal and get back to the state championship game.” Heritage starts school a little later than the local public schools, but football practice has already begun and the players are eager to get the season underway. “This season, they came back from summer break into two-adays in shape and they came in focused and we are looking at one game at a time and one practice at a time to get things going,” Shipman said. “I feel like the expectations are high and at the same time, we are focused on reaching a lot of goals along the way. We want to be a more disciplined team and that’s what has been one of our known qualities here at

Fredericksburg Heritage over the years.” One of the goals the team has set is on the defensive side of the ball. “One of the goals is that we want to break the turnover ratio record and that’s +31 and that means that you can’t put the ball on the ground and you have to look for opportunities to take the ball away from your opponents,” Shipman said. “If we can do those things, then I think we are going to accomplish a lot of our other goals and hopefully, if we can stay healthy and focused, we can punch our ticket to the state championship game again and take a shot at winning it all.” Heritage will rely on several veteran players coming back to help the Eagles achieve success on the football field. “We have several veterans coming back but we are also a little bit young which is a good problem to have,” Shipman said. “The 13 players that we have on our roster have great chemistry and they are focused and working hard. If we stay healthy, we will have as much depth as we need.” Shipman likes the athleticism he sees this year. “We’ve got great speed and a lot of weapons,” Shipman said. “Anyone who plays us is familiar with Quatro Stewart. He is one of our seniors and he is very talented. He is a great athlete and I don’t think that’s a surprise to anybody.” Shipman said there are other weapons on his roster that many people may not know about yet. “Being able to be versatile on offense is going to be important

and we have some plans in place to counter other teams that may focus on Quatro Stewart alone,” Shipman said. “I think we have great overall speed and on offense, we should not have a problem moving the ball up and down the field.” That speed is expected to translate to the defensive side of the ball as well. “We don’t have the biggest players on the field, but we do have speed,” Shipman said. “We’re hoping to be a fast and aggressive defensive team as well.” Heritage is in a four-team district comprising San Marcos Christian, Kerrville Our Lady of the Hills and Corpus Christi Annapolis. Heritage opens up the season on Friday, Aug. 28, at San Marcos Academy at 7:30 p.m. in San Marcos.

HERITAGE CROSS COUNTRY “We are excited to get this cross country season rolling. There are multiple returning team members along with some new faces, and we’re looking forward to seeing progression both as a team and for each runner individually. Three key points to being successful this year are pushing boundaries to reach the next level (of speed and strength), adapting, and keeping a joyful spirit/enjoying the process. For us, success is teammates building one another up and pushing each other toward their personal and team best both running and relationally. We anticipate seeing some personal bests this season and hope to have a strong showing at the state meet in October.” — Cross Country Coach Megan Jones

HARPER FOOTBALL
Harper football sets sights on District 14-2A title
The Harper Longhorns aren't shying away from what they want to accomplish in 2026. With eight starters returning on both sides of the ball and a 10-player senior class leading the way, Harper enters Head Coach Chad Zenner's seventh season with a District 14-2A Division II championship firmly in its sights. “Our kids, coaches, families and fans want a district championship this year,” Zenner said. “We have to say it out loud and believe it before it happens.” The Longhorns return a veteran core led by seniors Braydon Lake, Tayven Pickens, Jace Helfrich and Jaylon Wilson. Lake returns at quarterback and linebacker, while Helfrich plays running back and outside linebacker. Pickens provides experience on the offensive line and at linebacker, and Wilson returns at wide receiver and defensive back. Those four will be among the players Harper relies on to lead a roster that Zenner expects will have at least eight players contributing on both offense and defense. Despite returning eight starters on each side, Harper still has several positions to settle before district play. Offensively, the Longhorns are looking for an F-back who can line up in a twoback set or move into the slot, along with an outside receiver and right tackle. Defensively, Harper must replace two safeties and a defensive lineman. Zenner believes a difficult nondistrict schedule should help an-

swer some of those questions. “Our new 2A Div. 2 district is tough, but not like what we’ve been in,” Zenner said. “I needed to put together a tough pre-district schedule to challenge our kids and set up high hopes of finishing at the top or near the top at the end of the regular season.” Three of Harper's four nondistrict opponents — Sonora, Johnson City and Bangs — compete in Class 2A Division I. The Longhorns open the regular season Aug. 28 on the road against Yorktown. Harper then turns its attention toward a new District 14-2A Division II that includes Junction, Brackettville, Sabinal, D'Hanis, La Pryor and Center Point. While a district championship is the stated goal, Zenner isn't interested in predictions about where Harper should finish.
“I’m confident in our kids and know what they can do,” Zenner said. “I also know we don’t need outsiders validating or judging what we do.”
Instead, the Longhorns are building their season around a simple theme: “Just One More,” or JOM. “Sometimes the difference between good and great is doing something just one more time,” Zenner said. “One more rep, one more second, one more yard, one more workout, one more try or attempt.” For Zenner, that approach puts the emphasis back on the work Harper does long before kickoff on Friday night. “We can talk about a district championship, but whether we achieve that goal or not, the outcome won’t be dictated by the opinions of others,” Zenner said. “We win and lose our games on the practice field Monday through Wednesday so on Friday night, when the lights come on, we’re ready to roll.” Information provided by Lindy Segall

HARPER VOLLEYBALL
Harper Ladyhorns under new leadership By Cary Burgess Standard-Radio Post Sports Editor The Harper Ladyhorns volleyball team is under new leadership after former head coach Gina Lumpkins retired after last season. Jessica Wolsey has been an assistant coach under Lumpkins for the past 10 seasons and was named the new head volleyball coach over the summer. “I’ve been a part of the district for 14 years, so I’ve been around, but just in a new role,” Wolsey said. When the UIL announced realignments for Class 2A sports, the volleyball team was left untouched despite changes across the board in

other sports at Harper. “With volleyball, we are still in the same district that we always have been and we were not affected,” Wolsey said. “We are still with Johnson City, Junction, Center Point and Sonora. That has been our district for the last four years. Volleyball was untouched.” The Ladyhorns will have new leadership with Wolsey taking over the reins, but she has a strong nucleus of
players ready to step up this year. “It’s kind of a unique situation because they are an older team with primarily juniors and seniors with a brand new freshman libero,” Wolsey said. “Even though most of our players are older, they don’t have the varsity experience because over the past two years, we have had senior-heavy classes, so for some of the upperclassmen, this is their first time stepping up to the varsity role.” Wolsey likes the group she has on her team this year. “They are just a great group of girls that get along so well,” Wolsey said. “They are out there having fun and at the same time, they are coachable and want to learn and they want to do things right. They are just a great
group of girls.” The season started in early August with some games already under the Ladyhorns’ belt. “The season got off to a slow start but every day, we are getting better,” Wolsey said. “Our motto this season is ‘New Season, Same Standard’ and that just because I’m in a new role and some of the players are in new roles, our expectations are still high.” Wolsey expects her team to perform well on the court. “I still expect our team to finish in the top two or three teams in our district and go into the playoffs like we always have in the past,” Wolsey said. “I’m still holding them to that standard and I think we are going to get there.”

HARPER CROSS COUNTRY
Ben Anderson highlights Harper boys cross country By Cary Burgess Standard-Radio Post Sports Editor The Harper Longhorns varsity cross country team returns for the 2026 season anchored by Ben Anderson. “We are really young on the boys’ side but we have two runners that ran last year that are returning this year,” Harper head cross country coach Kenny King said. “Ben Anderson is one of them and he was fourth in the district last year behind three Mason kids. He’s only gotten better and he’s going to be the one who leads the way for us. Ben (Anderson) should be
able to win district this year.” Anderson will be joined by several young runners who have performed well so far. “We fully expect to get back to regionals this year after going to regionals last year,” King said. The Harper boys’ team may be young, but they have great potential this season. “They are young, but the expectations are still the same,” King said. “We had a lot of turnover from last year but we still expect to make it to Corpus Christi for regionals and actually take it one more step beyond that and make it to Round Rock at the state level.”
Harper inherits strong freshman group By Cary Burgess Standard-Radio Post Sports Editor
The Harper High School girls cross country team will be competing in a new district this year thanks to UIL realignment last year. “Harper, Johnson City and Center Point are still together and we join Brackett, Sabinal, La Pryor and San Antonio Stacey in our new district,” Harper head cross country coach Kenny King said. “With that, we no longer have to run against Mason, which is a perennial power.” King believes that his girls’ team can be a regional qualifier this year. “As long as everything goes the way that it should, we should be a regional qualifier,” King said. King said the girls’ team needs to gain more experience in varsity competition. “We are really young with a couple of juniors and then it’s sophomores and freshmen,” King said. “The freshmen that are coming in

are a strong group that were second in the district last year in middle school and were really good. I really think, as a whole, we can win district with this group.” King likes the chemistry he has
witnessed in practice so far. “They all get along really well with each other and it’s been great,” King said. “The freshmen we have on the team have been together since they were in diapers pretty much, so they all get along and have really good chemistry.” King has Sept. 12 circled on his calendar. “We are going to run in the Islander Splash at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi,” King said. “It’s the regional meet course and it’s the fourth meet for us and the halfway point for our season. If we have a good showing there, then I will have a good feeling about how we are, overall.” Harper also has the luxury of hosting the district meet in October. “It’s at our place and we are going to host it on Oct. 14,” King said. “We are young, but we are going to be really competitive and I am really excited about what this group can do.”
