Aunanimous Oro Valley Town Council has directed staff to pursue installation of a conventional elevator within a lowered front entryway at the Oro Valley Community and Recreation Center.
This solution to access for people with disabilities has an estimated cost of $1.75 million. Council has budgeted $1.5 million for the project.
Crews for Sundt Construction are building roads and pouring concrete for La Posada at Pusch Ridge, the Oro Valley multimillion-dollar senior living community that’s years in the making.
In this first phase, Sundt is building 342,688
square feet of space for apartments and fitness facilities on the 79.5-acre parcel, which lies behind low hills east of First Avenue, roughly between Naranja and Lambert, and west of the Canada del Oro Wash.
Officials say the site is ideal for the project.

The March 1 decision drew immediate praise from at least one resident who has called for better accommodation.
“The physically challenged people in our community will now have a facility they can easily use,” resident Jim Horn said in email. “Seniors will now feel comfortable entering and leaving the building...It was a long time in coming, too long, too many missed opportunities, but that’s behind us now, and many physical-

ly challenged people will feel a sense of relief that the new entrance will be finished.”
For years, people with physical challenges have used a side ramp, walking or rolling past garbage dumpsters to access the building, which was the El Conquistador Country Club before the town bought it in 2015. Inside, those guests have encountered further obstacles to reach the bar, restaurant, golf, meeting space and other facilities.
“This is the only option to finally provide a respectable ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) access,” Councilmember Steve Solomon said of the proposal. “It’s long overdue, and money well spent.”
In November, staff heard “loud and clear from council” its desire to install a standard elevator at the community center, public works director Paul Keesler said. At that time, council asked staff to explore alternatives. Keesler returned with cost estimates for a conventional elevator as well as a “LULA,” a limited use/limited application elevator that is a hybrid between a commercial elevator and a wheelchair lift. One or two people can ride a LULA at any given time.
Breckenridge Group Architects Planners identified four solutions, two with conventional elevators, two with LULAs. Each mode was priced for installation within the existing entrance level, as well as within a lowered entrance. Currently, everyone must climb at least one flight of stairs to get into the main section of the building.
A conventional elevator within the existing entrance was estimated at $1.25 million. The two LULA options were $750,000 within the current entrance level, and $1.35 million at a lowered level. “I know it was not a preference of council,” Keesler said of the LULA. That said, a LULA “fits neatly in the building.”
When Keesler finished

the world to maximize the well-being of seniors,” La Posada President/CEO Joni Condit said at a Jan. 13 groundbreaking.
“This is a truly majestic and special place,” said architect Jay Silverberg of Gensler Architects. Designs “allow the outside to become part of the inside of the community,” he added.
When this work is done in mid-2025, residents shall occupy 166 one- and two-bedroom apartments in three towers of staggered heights up to five stories tall, each with a view.
As part of a “hearth” concept, those residents will enjoy centralized dining and fitness spaces, a library, a beauty spa, a bar, an outdoor yoga lawn, a pool with both lap and open swimming, an art studio, gathering spaces, access to recreational trails, among other amenities.
In an anticipated Phase 2, La Posada at Pusch Ridge plans to construct up to 24 assisted living apartments and 24 memory care suites to provide residents “supportive living options if needed,” according to Paul Loomans, senior vice president of strategy and marketing.
Once planned single-family homes are complete, “up to 300 residences” will be available, he added.
“We’re excited to be able to offer this great opportunity in Oro Valley,” Loomans said. “We’re up and going, and we’re doing well.”
La Posada at Pusch Ridge is a sister property to La Posada at Park Centre, the nationally recognized Green Valley community opened in 1987. Today, La Posada at Park Centre has some 750 residents and more than 500 employees. It generates an estimated annual economic impact of more than $50 million. Similarly, in Oro Valley, La Posada at Pusch Ridge expects to create “hundreds of jobs,” Loomans said, with “tens of millions” in annual economic activity.
Construction is the current economic activity. Sundt is doing “an awesome job,” Loomans said.
This phase requires an estimated 30 months to complete. That two-and-ahalf-year time 00frame “gives people a great start on planning to downsize,” said marketing manager Cindy Barbee said. “We call it ‘right-sizing.’”
As of mid-February, La Posada at Pus-
ch Ridge was reaching 50% commitment for its Phase 1 apartments, Barbee said. The nonprofit company is using digi-

Oro Valley, AZ – When it comes to chronic pain and/ or neuropathy, the most common doctor-prescribed treatment is drugs like Gabapentin, Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Neurontin. The problem with antidepressants or anti-seizure medications like these is that they offer purely symptomatic relief, as opposed to targeting and treating the root of the problem. Worse, these drugs often trigger an onset of uncomfortable, painful, and sometimes harmful side effects.
The only way to effectively treat chronic pain and/or peripheral neuropathy is by targeting the source, which is the result of nerve damage owing to inadequate blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet. This often causes weakness, numbness, tingling, pain, and balance problems. A lack of nutrients causes the nerves to degenerate – an insidious and often painful process.
cannot survive, and thus, slowly die. This leads to those painful and frustrating consequences we were talking about earlier, like weakness, numbness, tingling, balance issues, and perhaps even a burning sensation.
The drugs your doctor might prescribe will temporarily conceal the problems, putting a “BandAid” over a situation that will only continue to deteriorate without further action.
Thankfully, Oro Valley is the birthplace of a brandnew facility that sheds new light on this pressing problem of peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain. The company is trailblazing the medical industry by replacing outdated drugs and symptomatic reprieves with an advanced machine that targets the root of the problem at hand.
1. Finding the underlying cause
2. Determining the extent of the nerve damage (above 95% nerve loss is rarely treatable)
3. The amount of treatment required for the patient’s unique condition
Arrowhead Physical Medicine in Oro Valley, AZ uses a state-of-the-art electric cell signaling systems worth $100,000.00. Th is ground-breaking treatment is engineered to achieve the following, accompanied by advanced diagnostics and a basic skin biopsy to accurately analyze results:
1. Increases blood flow
2. Stimulates and strengthens small fiber nerves
3. Improves brain-based pain
The treatment works by delivering energy to the affected area(s) at varying wavelengths, from low- to middle-frequency signals, while also using Amplitude Modulated (AM) and Frequency Modulated (FM) signaling

Cathay Klein — active cyclist and longtime friend of Button Brew House owners Todd and Erika Button — has cycled the event since the start. She’s now considered one of the ride’s leaders and said there are many reasons why she returns.
“It’s the camaraderie,” Klein said. “It’s getting together and chatting and drinking a beer.”
The Beer + Bikes ride is a 16-mile trip to 1912 Brewing Company and back to Button Brew House. Both brewers are located on the Chuck Huckelberry Loop, a popular trail for most outdoor activities around Tucson’s perimeter. Klein said it contributes to cycling’s popularity.
“With these two breweries being just off the loop, it makes it convenient to be able to stop and have a beer,” Klein said.
It started as an evening event in the summer, but the Buttons run it during the day in cooler months. The Beer + Bikes group meets around 11 a.m. every other week. They bike 8 miles to 1912 Brewing Company for a drink or two and then ride the 8 miles back to Button for another.
It’s casual. Klein said they never drink too much to be unsafe, and they rarely stay in time for more than a few drinks at the other brewer.
“We only have time for two beers,” Klein said. “It’s pretty doable with a 16-mile bike ride.”
Beer + Bikes also ensures that no matter the skill level of riders, no one gets left behind. Some cyclists bring road bikes and zip down the path; others are slower or more averagely paced. Many who join aren’t experienced cyclists.
Klein encouraged people not to let their bike experience sway them from joining. The consistent riders lead everyone safely to and
from Button Brew House.
“We watch out for each other,” Klein said. “There are a lot of people who have shown up and haven’t ridden 16 miles before. There is one of us who will wait for them and make sure they’re good and able to get to the brewery.”
The ride is also not exclusive to bicycles, either. Klein noted that one time, someone rode a Hoverboard with the cyclists. Anyone can join with any vehicle as long as they can keep up. The point of Beer + Bikes is to enjoy the ride on the Loop and the brews of the companies.
The group will meet next on Saturday, March 18. The event usually ends around 2 p.m. in the spring, but during summer evening hours, riders can also partake of the food trucks near Button Brew House. They switch out weekly, and both brewers also serve a range of snacks.
While the alcohol and food are not included, the ride and company of fellow bike and brew lovers are free. Beer + Bikes is an introduction to classic Tucson activities, and to Klein, the close camaraderie is the best part of it.
“I’ve met most of my best friends through breweries,” Klein said. “That’s the really neat thing about Tucson. The beer community is such a small community. We’re tightknit.”

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is a wilderness nonprofit powerhouse, supporting itself with creative fundraisers like its upcoming WineDown with Wildlife. These events help fund the museum’s attractions, including the zoo, botanical garden, art gallery, natural history museum and aquarium.
“We have these five different aspects and every aspect needs support,” said Tianna Holder, marketing and media manager.
“We have fundraisers for all different areas of the museum, but this one is to support our wildlife.”
The museum’s third WineDown with Wildlife will be hosted on Saturday, March 18, on the museum grounds and features performances and animal spotlights.
Holder said the festival, like many other museum events, strives to support the local community. The museum will offer drinks, food and acts, all from Arizona.
“We’re huge on supporting local in both Tucson and the regions of Arizona,” Holder said. “It’s really fun to partner with these local wineries and help promote the Arizona wine scene.”
Attending wineries include Bruzzi Vineyard and Rancho Rossa Vineyards, and refreshments will be served by Bawker Bawker Cider House and The Meading Room, among others.
For food, Holder noted that most vendors are returning from the last few years. Beyond Bread, Ciao Down and The Curry Pot will make appearances, as well as treats from Popped Artisan.
“Some of them we reach out to and some
of them reach out to us,” Holder said. “They are all vendors we’ve worked with before...we have great relationships.”
The main attractions, however, are the animals. The event starts with a complimentary visit to the Stingray Touch exhibit. Later that night, the museum will host three animal spotlights, including separate animal enrichment with its resident ocelot and Mexican Wolves. The third spotlight is a surprise, and guests can purchase the add-on with their ticket.
The Mexican wolves are a new addition, which the museum acquired as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The museum goes through associated protocols to ensure safe transitions for the animals.
“If there’s an exhibit that’s empty, it doesn’t just get filled,” Holder noted. “There’s a process you have to go through, and we hold a very high standard of ethics. We were really excited to get these wolves.”
Along with the spotlights, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum will provide live entertainment throughout the festival. Local band Barnaby and the Butcher is scheduled to perform, as well as Flam Chen, a modern circus and fire theater. According to its mission statement, the group merges daredevil acrobatics, pyrotechnics and a mastery of air and fire arts.
Barnaby and the Butcher will perform onstage while Flam Chen will roam the museum grounds and display their work in costume. Holder was also eager to note the natural spectacle of the sky from the museum’s view. The museum will offer sunset and

stargazing opportunities.
“Most people don’t get the opportunity to watch the sunset at the museum because of our operating hours,” Holder said. “It’s a special time to be on the grounds when the sun goes down, and you get all those beautiful colors of the Arizona sunset. There’s really nothing like it.”
Tickets are available with general and VIP admission. Both allow attendees to 10 wine tastings and Stingray Touch. Vino VIP offers earlier entry and a goodie bag filled with local and regional items. Highlights include a Bruzzi Vineyard wine-tasting voucher, a limited-edition Trevor mock bandana and a pack of Nature/SEARCH sunflower seed mix.
All tickets are available at a discount to desert museum members. There will also be designated driver tickets available for general or VIP admission. These guests will receive all the perks from either ticket except for alcohol. With VIP, they will get their bottle of wine from the goodie bag at the end of the event.
Holder explained that due to its location and complicated roadway, the museum promotes safe driving practices for all guests.
“We really want to put an emphasis on drinking responsibly,” Holder said. “It can be a little difficult to get an uber to or from the museum. It’s a winding road, and city buses don’t come to the museum, either.”
The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum offers a variety of experiences for visitors, but it also promotes wildlife outreach. All proceeds from the wine festival will go directly to animal care and museum maintenance. It’s events like these that help the museum educate the community and make a difference in the environment.
“The desert museum is a nonprofit organization, so all fundraising, all donations and every ticket sold is important to us,” Holder said. “It takes a lot of time, money, dedication and a lot of hands.”

his presentation, Vice Mayor Melanie Barrett quickly moved to proceed with the $1.75 million option for a conventional elevator within a lowered front entrance.
Councilmember Josh Nicolson seconded.
Councilmember Dr. Harry “Mo” Greene II said he met with wheelchair tennis players. One told him, “When I bring a date here and come up to the community center,” he must enter via the ramp past the trash receptacle. That takes time. Greene said that individual was also discouraging of the LULA option. “You want to be able to go up the elevator with others,” he said.
In the $1.75 million preferred alternative, the community center’s entrance
and facade would be lowered, providing walk-in access to all. The elevator would be installed near that entry, with a stop at all three floor levels. Existing stairs will be relocated. The elevator would penetrate the existing roof; architectural treatment would soften its exterior appearance. ADA parking will be added at the building’s entrance.
With council’s consent, Keesler plans to “give the architect a push to move forward” with a specific design. Permitting, and a call for bids would likely occur in July, with a contract award and perhaps the start of construction in August. It would take 6-9 months to build.

They make me feel like I’m part of their family when I’m there, and are always happy to see me. They get me in fast and bend over backwards to help me when I have a problem. “Athena Storey is truley a dream to work with, everyone there is. Dr. Storey was so gentle, thorough, observant and overall kind. I needed a handful of fillings done and she made each tooth look and feel COMPLETELY natural and perfect in the end. I’s recommend her in a heartbeat to anyone who needs any dental work. Even her assistant at the time when I got my fillings done was super comforting and friendly to me.”

“Dr. Storey and her staff are all very kind, most definelty the MOST caring and non-judgmental environment I’ve ever been to for dental care. I’m happy I found them when I got insurance because it’s been a couple years now and there’s no one else like them. I even convinced my dentist-phobic sweetheart to go and now he loves it there too. THAT in itself is amazing. Love their gentle approach, their very modern offices, their professionalism and I recommend Dr. Storey to anyone.”

Alright. So you can’t get on a plane bound for New Delhi, but you still crave onion bhaji and a plate full of sa ron mughlai. Head directly to Sa ron, where they promise an authentic Indian food experience. Of course, they have chicken tikka masala and tandoori lamb chops, but here there’s a chance to branch out with mutton cooked with a very hot vindaloo sauce. Now let’s talk about their naan, baked in a traditional tandoor oven. Besides the plain naan, there are 13 more to choose from. Finish it up with homemade mango ice cream, called kulfi.

Welcome from Oro Valley! For me, being positive and friendly is more than a personality trait; it’s also an essential building block of my approach to real estate. Kindness, respect and empathy are attributes I use to build strong relationships in all aspects of my life. While I am a driven professional, I also believe that a little humility goes a long way in forging connections with my clients that keep their best interest squarely within my sights. I had a long and successful career in human esources working for one of the world’s largest apparel and footwear manufacturers. The attributes and personal characteristics that made me successful in human resources are the same that make me successful in real estate. I relocated to Tucson after spending much of my adult life in Pennsylvania. I couldn’t be happier with my move, between the warm and friendly people, fantastic restaurants, and strong University of Arizona community, Tucson is an endlessly satisfying place to live, When I’m not engaging in the wealth of outdoor activities here, I enjoy gardening, cooking, traveling throughout the world and creating and appreciating art. I also believe in giving back to my community and have served of the board of directors and committees of many national and local non-profit organizations. Always smiling and always keeping your needs in mind, I focus on delivering a superior customer experience. That is my promise to you as your REALTOR. I look forward to meeting you soon.
“Jeff has been phenomenal in supporting us on 4 out of 4 real estate transactions with the last few months. He is a requisite professional, and all you could hope for a realtor.”

It is incredibly rewarding representing people in the purchase or sale of their home; it is so meaningful, especially when there are so many agents to choose from. I take a lot of pride in the service and experience that I provide to my clientsThank you for voting me the No. 1 Realtor in Tucson.

“I cannot say enough about our wonderful experience with Jim Storey. I recommend Jim’s knowledgeable and professional services to anyone buying or selling in the Arizona market. Getting us one million cash over our asking price says it all. Follow his recommendations and let him make the magic happen !!!”
B Zauft
“Jim Storey is the epitome of excellence, professionalism, and knowledge with regards to real estate in the Tucson area. His demeanor and presence created an instant sense of comfort and made our homebuying experience one of great joy. We met Jim a year prior to purchasing our house while working through the ebbs of the market, and he never once pushed or pressured us into something we weren’t fully comfortable with; on the contrary. Jim listened to our needs and executed our vision through his network to make the impossible happen. Our current purchase with him is our dream home, and he made all of it possible.” -
K. McCune“Jim Storey sets the bar for real estate professionals. To start, he’s knowledgeable, personable, communicative, and trustworthy — all the things you expect from a great realtor. Why is he a cut above the rest? Jim’s deep understanding of Tucson-area real estate and connection to the community make all the difference in a saturated market. His diverse experiences as a serial entrepreneur equip him with an arsenal of negotiation and marketing skills that the average agent simply doesn’t have. Previous agents we worked with lacked the creativity and confidence to effectively negotiate on our behalf. Jim is just the opposite — there was never a moment where we doubted that he was living up to his fiduciary duty to us. A true advocate for his clients throughout what can be a complex process, he’s always willing to explain strategies, options, pros and cons (multiple times and with admirable patience!). At every step, we felt assured that Jim’s sole concern was our best interest. Never any pressure, just solid guidance.”
LA POSADA from page 4
venues on the Northwest side, and 1:1 meetings at its Oracle Road sales office to tell the story and secure sales. Eleven floor plans are available, averaging 1,300 square feet.
“We’re an organization that wants to help people make good decisions, without pressure,” Loomans said. “It’s a decision people typically are happy they make. People find out what fits them best.”
La Posada at Pusch Ridge asks an entrance fee deposit to secure a life lease, and a monthly fee for housing, dining, housekeeping, maintenance and wellness services. After residents pass or leave the community, a sizable percentage of the entrance fee is refundable, Loomans said.
Local residents are “really, really thankful” they can age in place with “their same mountains, and near their doctors,” Barbee said. “They’re excited to have a community like this, where they’re familiar, to downsize.” Their pets are welcome, too.
“This is very much a good fit for this community and its residents,” Loomans said.
The project is eight years in the making. The La Posada parent company purchased the site in 2014, gained permissions from the town of Oro Valley in 2016, and conducted preliminary site work at what was then called Nakoma Sky. Then, in 2018, the project was halted because of rising materials prices and a tight labor market.
With new architectural and construction firms aboard, the renamed La Posada at Pusch Ridge has renewed energy. In November 2022, La Posada issued and sold bonds to resume the project. The 501c(3) company does not disclose the bond issue total, nor estimated cost of the project. It’s in the “tens of millions” of dollars, Loomans said.
Permit fees to the town of Oro Valley were based on a "total construction cost" of more than $140 million, town staff said. That value includes the cost of the main building, fitness building, site walls and site improvements such as grading, drainage, roads and sidewalks. That figure does not include future phases nor additional “soft” costs such as fixtures, furnishings, design and engineering fees, the town added.
In an accredited life-plan community, residents aged 62 and older can find services they need for a lifetime, from independent to assisted living and memory care. “The majority of our residents in Green Valley never utilize assisted living,” Loomans said. “But they know it is available.”
At a La Posada community, “you don’t have to stress that much,” Barbee said. Its residents are fed — and fed well,
Loomans said, because dining is “extremely important” — cared for, and socially active. “Whatever your lifestyle is, let us know, and with enough interest we will incorporate it into our community,” Loomans said.
More than half the Oro Valley parcel will remain undeveloped. Sustainable energy, landscaping and water harvesting practices are in the plans. “We will be good stewards,” Loomans said.
Two local students are cramming this week for the 2023 Arizona State Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 18, at Madison Center for the Arts in Phoenix.
Nathan Merrill of Legacy Traditional School and Karen Opoku-Appoh of Marana Middle School are among the state’s 27 spellers — ranging from grades three to eight — who will compete.
Arizona Educational Foundation is the main organizer of the Arizona State Bee, which is the final competition each year to determine who will represent Arizona in the Scripps National Bee in National Harbor, Maryland.
Arizona has one of the largest spelling bee participation rates in the nation, with 484,122 students competing this year from public, private, parochial and homeschools statewide, according to the foun-
dation.
For the two students who place first and second place in the State Spelling Bee, AEF supports travel for the students and their chaperones to represent Arizona in Maryland.
A recorded copy of the Arizona spelling bee will be uploaded to the Arizona Educational Foundation’s YouTube channel following the bee. The 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee Finals will be broadcast live on ION on Thursday, June 1.
Nathan MerrillAn eighth grader, Nathan called spelling bees nerve wracking. However, he said he believed he could do well.
“I just didn’t know I would be able to win,” he said about what it took to get to the state finals. “There’s a lot of studying involved, and we worked on being very poised. If you’re nervous, you could mess up the word, even if
you know how to spell it.”
Nathan said he wakes up early in the morning to go over the 4,000 possible words he may be asked to spell. Math is his favorite subject and he’s also an avid soccer player.
Otherwise, he spends time reading and with his four siblings. He enjoyed the fivebook series, “Unwind,” by Neal Shusterman. Nathan’s parents, Curtis and Karalee Merrill, said their son reads voraciously, much like his 12-year-old sister.
“He also loves a good YouTube video by Denis Daily, Marc Grober or Dude Perfect,” Curtis said.
When he grows up, Nathan wants to work as a pilot — and he’s already had a chance to experience that.
“When I was in the fifth grade, our school did a program where we went through the curriculum of the history of aviation,” he said. “I got to co-pilot an airplane for 20 minutes. I really liked that. I just want to do it again.”
Curtis said he’s proud of his son.
“He’s really taken the initiative to study for the spelling bee,” Curtis said.
“He usually studies for an hour a day or more. His mother quizzes him on words and he writes down the words he misses. He has pages of words that he’s written.”
Nathan is a natural at public speaking, having had opportunities at his congregation, the Church of Latter-day Saints, his father said.
“He’s done so well,” he said. “He’s done almost all of this himself. We’re just here to watch him. It’s his vision for himself to do well and he’s succeeding.”
The daughter of Taucia González and Kofi Opoku-Appoh, Karen is in the eighth grade at Marana Middle School. One of six children, Karen is excited about the spelling bee.
“I have this document on my tablet that I use that has a bunch of words, so I study one page a day,” she said. “I use Merriam-Webster on the Chromebook to search the words.”
English language arts is her favorite subject and she’s hoping to go to medical school to be a pathologist.
“I always wanted to be a doctor,” she said. “I was just sitting there, and I searched all the types of doctors. I came across pathologist and thought I wanted to try that out.”
When she’s not studying, she plays basketball or soccer or runs cross country. She looks up to her brothers, who are “really good at sports,” and obsesses over astrology.
González said she and her husband are proud of Karen.
“She’s always been the speller of the household,” she said with a laugh. “At each stage, she stayed super humble. She’s super honored to go to the next stage. If she doesn’t win, she still sees it as a win because at least she’ll get a lot of hours in her week back.”
Her mother called her “super studious,” and the type of student who’s curious about learning.
“She talks to us about what she’s learning — especially through the spelling bee process,” González said. “Her dad and I laugh that her vocabulary has surpassed us for college-educated adults.”
