osh Buckley found his calling after he graduated from college in Michigan and moved to Arizona, following his grandfather’s advice that teaching jobs were available.

But what the Mesa teacher never envisioned was that he would play a central role in the historic walkout of teachers and support staff in a statewide effort aimed at forcing Gov. Doug Ducey and the state Legislature to improve school funding after a decade of cuts.

That walkout has impacted him in several ways: As presidentof the Mesa Education Association, he’s a leader of the Mesa contingent of the #RedforEd movement; he’s married to someone in management (a high school assistant principal) and his two children attend public schools shut down by the walkout.

After 12 years on the job and obtaining a masters degree, he knows he made the right choice.

“I love my job. When I went into the classroom, that was the best part’’ of his college experience at Saginaw Valley State University, he said. “Working with kids, there’s a real sense you are doing something, that you are making a difference every day.’’

Moving to Mesa and starting his job at Skyline High School only verified his choice of a career, Buckley said.

“I really love working with students, not just in class, but as they are growing up and figuring out the world,’’ said Buckley. “It’s cool to

Two Congress members civilly discuss their differences

T

he East Valley Partnership’s annual Statespersons Luncheon brought together two members of Congress from across the aisle who bridged the partisan divide to discuss NAFTA and other issues that affect Arizonans.

Democrat Kyrsten Sinema, whose District 9 includes parts of Ahwatukee, Tempe, Mesa and Chandler, and Republican Andy Biggs, who represents a large swath of the East Valley in District 5, participated in the event for the secondstraight year.

Sinema previously took part in the luncheon series for several years alongside former Rep. Matt Salmon.

Sinema and Biggs did not always agree, but they remained cordial – reminding attendees on multiple occasions that they are good friends – throughout the hour-long conversation.

That geniality was in stark contrast to the acrimonious relationship between the Republican and Democratic parties in Washington, D.C. – a point not lost on Biggs and Sinema.

Both representatives spent a good deal of time talking about the need to improve the relationship between the two parties in order to end the gridlock in Congress.

The two representatives have different ideas about how to get there, though.

Sinema said that she believes in retaining the Senate’s cloture rule, by which 60 senators can circumvent a filibuster and quickly end debate on a bill.

Instead of doing away with the oftused maneuver, she said the country needs more senators who won’t invoke cloture in order to avoid debate.

“I think the solution is to get senators who are more willing to work together across the aisle to solve problems and get things done, because we used to have a Senate that worked,” Sinema said.

Biggs disagreed, arguing that cloture “dilutes representation” and is an arcane rule that “needs to go.”

He blamed cloture for the last-minute spending additions that ballooned the price tag for Congress’ $1.3 trillion omnibus budget bill and the fact that hundreds of other bills passed by the House currently sit untouched in the Senate.

The bills, he said, “are sitting there with no action, and it’s because of the 60-vote cloture rule.”

Ashlynne Mike AMBER Alert in Indian Country Act – legislation they co-sponsored that expands the AMBER Alert system into tribal communities – in hopes that their example can work as a template for how members of Congress from both parties can work together to pass legislation.

If they can continue to work through the stagnation in Congress, both Biggs and Sinema are focused on a range of national issues that could have major effects on Arizona.

A big area of concern was NAFTA, the free-trade agreement between the U.S., Mexico and Canada that has drawn frequent criticism from President Donald Trump and could potentially be renegotiated in the future.

Any renegotiation of NAFTA could have a massive impact on the Arizona economy. Mexico and Canada are Arizona’s top two trade partners and account for nearly 50 percent of the state’s foreign exports, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Biggs said he has heard that “tremendous progress has been made” and that the renegotiations will likely result in two bilateral agreements between the U.S. and Mexico and U.S. and Canada.

“It is going to look a lot like the NAFTA deal that is in place now with some updating on things like environmental regulations – which we have much more onerous regulations than our neighbors to the south… (and) intellectual property; from both sides we have been victimized in intellectual property theft and abuse.”

Sinema offered a different perspective, saying that there have been five meetings between the three countries and “they have not gone particularly well.”

“The renegotiation of NAFTA is really important for Arizona. If it is done well

and benefits the U.S., then we are in a good place,” she said. “But if the talks fall apart or go poorly, then Arizona can really lose from the renegotiation or the end of NAFTA.” Sinema said the Trump administration has unilateral control over the negotiations and Congress has no formal input on the process, though Congress would have to approve any “substantive changes” to NAFTA. Biggs said he requested a meeting with the U.S. trade representative to gain further information on the progress of the negotiations.

Sinema said that representatives on the Arizona delegation – both Republicans and Democrats – have reached out to the U.S. trade representative to advocate for issues of importance to Arizonans, such as agricultural trade and manufacturing exports.

The hour-long conversation also touched on other topical issues like the national debt, a potential trade war with China, the U.S. role in the Syrian Civil War and healthcare – a topic that Sinema said she hears about most from her constituents.

“People are really concerned about healthcare,” she said. “Businesses are concerned because the costs are continuing to increase. We expect to see more increases this October, so the premiums are going to go up again.”

She added that healthcare exchange “is not working in Arizona” as counties in the state have only one insurance option on the Affordable Care Act marketplace.

Next year’s Statespersons’ Luncheon could look very different. Biggs is up for re-election in District 5, and Sinema will not seek re-election in District 9 as she attempts to win the Senate seat vacated

by Sen. Jeff Flake’s impending retirement.

efforts to feed hundreds of children whose families are so poor that their only source of nutritious meals are federally funded free and reduced-price breakfasts and lunches.

For other kids with working parents, districts and volunteers also rallied to offer places and supervision during the day.

It is not clear how long both efforts can be sustained if the walkout becomes prolonged.

Details varied from one East Valley school district to another with some offering free daycare programs and others charging a reduced fee. Even private businesses, such as educational camps and childcare centers, jumped in to help, setting up special programs or cutting fees on ones that had already been planned.

No matter the details, the goal was always the same: keep kids fed and safe.

Mesa city and school district officials opened four recreation centers staffed by striking teachers to feed and supervise children in grades K-6 for free, including special-needs children at the Eagles Community Center.

The Chandler Unified School District opened four elementary schools to feed all children under 18 for free and offered daycare through the Kids Express program for about $32 per day per child.

Higley set up a camp at two schools for a $20 per day fee.

Gilbert Public Schools simply coordinated with food banks to send more food home with kids before the walkout. The Tempe Elementary School District set up free breakfast and lunch programs at schools and parks.

Ben Smith, president of Mesa Public Schools Governing Board, said he started working on a plan to mobilize Mesa two weeks before the walkout. He secured a commitment from the city to open four Mesa recreation centers, giving working parents a safe place for their children to go during the walkout.

He said teachers embraced the plan enthusiastically, agreeing to staff the centers. MPS will launch a federally funded summer school lunch program a little earlier than usual to feed the children in grades K-6.

Nonprofits that already serve children and families, such as the East Valley Boys & Girls Clubs, Valley of the Sun YMCA and Salvation Army, also made accommodations to serve more kids – either with an entertaining combination of sports, games and arts and crafts or free or reduced-price breakfasts and/or lunches.

fun options, they also require a fee.

“It’s been passionately responsive. Everybody wants to help,’’ Smith said, noting many teachers volunteering to care for children at recreation centers.

Volunteers included special-needs teachers who cared for special-needs children at the Eagles Recreation Center in central Mesa, according to the MPS website.

“It’s a way to show they still care about their children,’’ Smith said. “If through this effort they maintain public support, that goes a long way.’’

He said that many disadvantaged children depend upon Mesa Public Schools for federally subsidized breakfast and lunch programs, as well as for their educational needs.

Helen Hollands, a spokeswoman for MPS, said 66.5 percent of Mesa students qualify for free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch because they are from low-income families.

“The teachers aren’t walking out on their students. They are walking out for their students,’’ Smith said. “I would love to have them teach, but I am proud they are standing up.’’

The four Mesa recreational centers accepting children on a first-come, firstserved basis throughout the city are Webster, 202 N. Sycamore; Jefferson, 120 N. Jefferson; Eagles (formerly Mesa Junior High School), 828 E. Broadway Road, and Broadway, 59 East Broadway Road.

The centers will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Jenny Bracamonte, resident district manager for food and nutrition at the Chandler district, said officials picked four schools that would be within walking district for most students, using the federal summer school program to pay for meals.

“We want to make sure our kids get what they need,’’ she said. “Anyone under

18 can come to these four sites.’’

The four Chandler schools were Fyre, Hartford Sylvia Encinas, Galveston and San Marcos elementary schools.

Tempe Elementary School District took a similar approach, providing free breakfast and lunch at a series of five schools and at parks as well. Kyrene School District offered reduced-price breakfast and lunch at four schools and extended the hours of its Family Resource Center, Josh Buckley, president of the Mesa Education Association, said teachers and other school employees solicited donations from supermarkets and packed lunches that students could take home with them after school on Wednesday.

“We are trying to make sure we are helping these students out,’’ he said.

Some districts also tried to recruit older high school students to help supervise young children, noting they could earn credits for community service requirements.

Ruth Collins, president and founder of Arizona Brainfood, said volunteers came in early on Wednesday and packed extra food that was sent home with students at a large number of schools.

Normally, the care packages of food are sent home on Friday nights to tide children over until Monday because many kids go hungry the entire weekend. In response to the walkout, the focus this time was to send home enough food for Thursday and Friday in addition to the weekend.

While elementary schools are normally the focus of Arizona Brainfood’s outreach efforts, the walkout prompted the nonprofit organization to include junior high schools and high schools as well.

At least 125 schools were served by the group in Chandler, Mesa, Gilbert, Tempe, Scottsdale and Fountain Hills.

In addition to the usual kid-friendly nutritious food, this week each student also received a 10-pack of tortillas, a loaf of bread, extra peanut butter and canned pasta to try to keep them fed through Monday, Collins said.

“We had a request from a lot more schools than normally take Arizona Brainfood this week,” Collins said. “They’re all concerned about the kids being out of school the extra two days. There have just been so many requests this week. That’s what Arizona Brainfood is all about.”

Collins said she has been heartened by the response of teachers willing to help Arizona Brainfood supply extra food to their students.

“I had 100 emails from teachers all over in the schools saying, ‘We’ll come pick it up,’” she said. “It was pretty awesome. The teachers are still looking out for their kids.”

The Boys & Girls Clubs and the YMCA are essentially adapting programs already in place during the summer and during school vacations. The Boys & Girls Clubs charge $20 per day along with a $30 membership fee for new members but are willing to waive some fees if there is financial hardship, Smith said.

He said the Boys & Girls Clubs also are essential to Mesa’s efforts because the four recreation centers couldn’t possibly accommodate the Mesa district’s 64,000 children.

“They are very passionate. They have agreed not to turn any children away,’’ Smith said.

Lisa Ellis, director of communications for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley, said staffing for the extra children already was in place because of preparations for the summer program.

She said most branches are participating, but it may be necessary to consolidate children at a single club if there is not enough demand to keep several clubs open.

Libby Corral, senior vice president for operations at the Valley of the Sun YMCA, said the Y’s programs would include the usual mix of sports, games and art projects. Fees ranged from $35 and $60 per day, per child.

“The YMCA is committed to making sure youth and families are safe and happy.

We respond to community needs. As soon as we heard this could become an issue, we wanted to be responsive and make sure that kids and families have a place to go.”

She said the programs are similar to those offered at other times of the year.

“One of the great things about the Y is we do offer summer camps and full-day programs during breaks, so we are able to modify curriculum and engage staff to modify programs we offer throughout the year.”

Ground broken for rebar plant expansion in Mesa Commercial Metals Company has broken

ground on a 63,000-square-foot expansion to create spooled rebar at CMC Steel Arizona, an environmentally conscious micro-mill in southeast Mesa.

“CMC Steel’s commitment to innovation and new technology makes them a leader in the steel production, fabrication and recycling industry,” Mayor John Giles said.

The company is investing in a spooler to produce hot-rolled, spooled rebar at its 260-acre campus at 11444 E. Germann Road. This will be CMC’s second spooler operation in the United States.

“The fact that they are growing their footprint, and keeping in tune with changes in technology, show that Mesa and the Germann Road Industrial Corridor will be their home from now and well into the future,” Councilman Kevin Thompson said.

CMC expects to begin shipping spooled rebar from its Mesa location in the spring of 2019.

“The micro-mill technology lends itself well to spooled rebar production as CMC remains committed to supporting and servicing the concrete reinforcing industry with new and innovative products,” said Barbara Smith, chairman, president and CEO of Commercial Metals Company.

The facility has grown from 200 jobs after startup in 2009 to just over 260 employees with another 20 indirect employees working for vendors on-site. The new manufacturing line (spooler line) will at first add a few positions, with further jobs created in the near future.

Group salutes music programs in Mesa schools, Campo Verde High The National Association of Music Merchants Foundation last

week said Mesa Public Schools and Campo Verde High School in Gilbert are among the best schools for music education in the nation.

The foundation, which advocates the advancement of music education, listed only Mesa and Tucson as the best Arizona communities for music education. Among a separate list of best individual schools for music education, Campo Verde and Rover Elementary in Tempe were the only Arizona schools to qualify.

Now in its 19th year, the awards program recognizes the efforts of teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders for their “exceptionally high commitment and consistent access to music education.”

Foundation spokeswoman Mary Luehrsen said the designees share two common traits: “consistent funding that anchors music education as part of the core curriculum and music programs that are located in communities where music education is viewed as a jewel of the school system.”

Mesa Community College now home to state’s first accredited arboretum Mesa Community College marked Arbor Day last Friday by planting

a salvaged mature native tree in what is now the state’s first arboretum accredited by the global ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program.

Located at MCC’s Southern and Dobson Campus, the 140-acre arboretum is home to thousands of plants from around the world, nearly 100 species of trees and over 80 species of cacti and succulents. The collection largely focuses on native and desert-adapted trees. Visitors can explore it free of charge between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. with the help of an interactive online map at mesacc.edu/arboretum.

All trees are inventoried in a database and labeled with small ID tags.

Mesa mulls sales tax hike for public safety

M

esa is considering a sales tax increase to hire additional officers, firefighters and civilian support

staff.

The proposed 0.25 percent increase, from 1.75 percent to 2 percent, received unanimous support at a City Council study session last Thursday.

The council will vote May 7 on whether to put the issue before voters in the November election.

A 0.4 percent sales tax increase proposed by the city in 2016 that would have provided additional funds for public safety did not receive voter approval.

However, that increase also would have funded the construction of four buildings for Arizona State University in downtown Mesa — a fact many blamed for the measure’s failure.

The current collective sales tax in Mesa, including the 5.6 percent state tax and 0.7 percent county tax, is 8.05 percent.

BUCKLEY

Revenue from the additional sales tax would total approximately $25 million annually to give police 60 percent and fire-medical 40 percent.

Officials estimate the tax will yield roughly $15 million annually for police.

Those funds would support hiring an estimated 65 officers and civilian patrol, and related costs, including police vehicles.

The Fire and Medical Department would receive an estimated $10 million to $10.5 million annually. Those funds would support the hiring of 45 firefighters and civilian technical staff.

The proposal pointed to an overall increase in calls for police and fire service – primarily for mental-health service, which can require more time.

There were no details on whether some funds would be used to resurrect Mesa Fire and Medical’s community-care program, which took an innovative approach by providing in-home services rather than resorting to costly emergency room visits.

It’s not a shock that Buckley ended up president of the Mesa Education Association. Buckley comes from a union household in Michigan, where his father and grandfather were both employees of General Motors and members of the United Automobile Workers.

He experienced a reduction of force in 2008 after two years as a Mesa teacher and ended up teaching in Queen Creek. Not knowing if he would have a job inspired him to work in labor relations beyond the classroom, Buckley said.

“I wanted to be an advocate for the profession and for the students,’’ Buckley said. “I decided, I don’t want this to happen to other educators.’’

What’s more surprising to Buckley is that teachers, in a right-to-work state such as Arizona, would watch their peers in West Virginia strike and become inspired to vote for the unprecedented and controversial action.

The uprising by teachers also comes in Buckley’s first year as MEA president, although he credits #RedforEd for igniting the grassroots movement.

It is a movement fueled by the deep frustrations of teachers with low pay and limited resources, combined with the power of social media.

“I think West Virginia hit a nerve with a lot of teachers. It’s a right-to-work state just like us,’’ Buckley said. “It shocked a lot of teachers. They said, ‘Can we do that?’’

After a series of walk-ins at about 1,000 schools, where teachers wore red and walked to schools carrying pro-education

over three years but was suspended when a federal grant funding the program ran out, the Tribune reported in March.

Both departments are dealing with complications arising from Mesa’s growing population, as well.

“The east side and west side of the city have different types of issues that they are dealing with,” Mesa Budget Director Candace Cannistraro said.

“On the east side, the population is growing, and we have geographic areas where there is a large expanse of area that someone needs to go to for response on a call, she continued.

She said the west side showed “multiple calls within the same area for the same unit, causing other units to have to come in and backfill for those calls.”

The departments would not add all positions at once. Rather, they would likely be phased in over a period of three to six years.

Because of that, there is a potential for the some of the funds to be used for other public safety expenses, including paying

off the unfunded pension liability.

In addition to increased hiring, the additional revenue from the sales tax increase would fund several one-time expenses, including resurfacing the driving track, a computer-aided dispatch system replacement and heart monitor replacements.

Mayor John Giles noted that crime is down in Mesa, “but that’s not to say it is always going to be that way.”

“We do have some unmet needs as a result of the growth,” he added. “To me, the need for this is very apparent, and I not only am in favor of it but plan on doing everything I can to assist the campaign to help tell the story to make this happen.”

Mesa’s current sales tax — 1.75 percent across the categories of retail, contracting and utilities, with no tax on food — is among the lowest in the Phoenix metro area.

Its retail rate ranks fourth lowest of the 17 largest municipalities in the Valley, behind Chandler, Gilbert and Scottsdale.

If raised to 2 percent, its ranking would be sixth lowest.

But teachers doubted Ducey’s plan was sustainable, citing its reliance on projected economic growth rather than a new funding source.

They also objected to Ducey sweeping funds from other important state programs to pay teachers. Buckley said he doesn’t want a pay raise for teachers at the cost of depriving children with disabilities, for instance.

Despite Ducey’s plan, teachers throughout the state voted overwhelmingly, by a 78 percent mandate, to support the walkout, according to the Arizona Education Association.

Buckley said 69.8 percent of MPS employees also voted in favor of the walkout.

“It’s a historic thing for Arizona. We held a statewide vote. That’s something that never happened before,’’ Buckley said. “I don’t think any of us thought that this year, this would happen. I think West Virginia really struck a chord.’’

West Virginia teachers walked out for nine days and finally won a 5 percent increase in pay.

Arizona teachers are seeking restoration of $1 billion in funding cut since 2008, including an immediate 20 percent raise and more funds for buying up-to-date text books and repairing schools.

“We have been working in under-funded schools for a long time.’’

Buckley has experienced the problem not only as a teacher, but as a parent.

Buckley’s entire family has connections to MPS. His wife, Gabrielle “Gabbi’’ Buckley, is an assistant principal at Dobson High School, the same school from which she graduated in 1995.

The couple met while they were teaching together at Dobson. Buckley said one of them had to become an administrator to help make ends meet with a larger salary. Buckley transferred to Red Mountain to avoid a conflict of interest.

“She can’t be my boss at work, too,’’ he said.

Buckley also is the father of two MPS students; Grace, 16, who attends Red Mountain High School, and Renner, 7, who attends Pomeroy Elementary School, an MPS school in Chandler.

After a series of less-strident measures, such as marching on thes Capitol in 2009, working to garner support for budget override elections and working on the campaigns of pro-education candidates, teachers resorted to the walkout, he said.

“We don’t think there is any other way to prove a point after a decade of cuts,’’ Buckley said. “The only way to go is to take the fight to the governor. It’s kind of a last-ditch effort.’’

Kalania Goldberg is scheduled to visit the First Lady May 7.

Two weeks ago Gilbert Mayor Jenn Daniels recognized the 13-year-old girl’s courage in speaking out against bullying in a special way.

Kalania in February covered her upper body with Post-It notes bearing the words of insults directed at her by classmates and then video-taped a message decrying such conduct.

The teen broke down in tears toward the end of the one-minute video as she told of how those insults hurt her.

Despite possible deal, EV schools' mired in uncertainty

epublican legislative leaders were closing in on a deal late Thursday to give Gov. Doug Ducey the pay hike he wants for teachers – but not the package being demanded by tens of thousands of educators who walked off the job.

That means East Valley parents should keep a close eye on their school district’s website to see when classes resume.

Chandler Unified Superintendent Camille Casteel on Thursday afternoon announced classes would resume on Monday. But she reversed her decision a few hours later after some parents and teachers questioned the move on the district’s Facebook page.

They expressed anger that the district also put out a call for substitute teachers in case many regular teachers stayed off the job on Monday. The district was prepared to double its $50-a-day rate in at least some cases in an apparent move to entice enough subs to report for duty.

In a late Thursday message, Casteel said that based on the number of teachers who indicated they’d return, “our schools will need to remain closed April 30.”

“Many of you feel this is the right decision and an equal number that bit is wrong,” Casteel wrote. “For that I apologize.”

Other East Valley districts made no mention of what they would do on Monday – or even this week.

At the Capitol, the plan is to provide Ducey with the 19 percent increase for teacher pay – he says it’s 20 percent if you count the 1 percent salary hike already in this year’s paychecks – assuming that funding details can be worked out for other non-educational programs, like health care for the poor and aid to counties.

It also means that lawmakers will not demand that Ducey provide a dedicated revenue source for the more than $1 billion price tag for his entire education package.

But there is still no agreement on exactly how those dollars will be divided up.

Sen. John Kavanagh, R-Fountain Hills, said it isn’t a simple matter of saying that teachers will get a 20 percent pay raise by the 2020-2021 school year.

Kavanagh, who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee, said the plan as crafted by Ducey is worded in a way that

teachers – and only teachers – would get a 9 percent increase this coming school year, another 5 percent the year after that and 5 percent more the third year.

But that, he said, means each new raise is compounded on the other, making the effective net pay increase actually more than 20 percent.

A potentially more troubling sticking point is whether schools will have to spend the $670 million for teacher salaries strictly on that.

“We want to be assured that the money is directed to pay increases,’’ Kavanagh said. But he said it’s not that simple.

He said some school districts, including in Scottsdale, already have raised teacher pay by 14 percent, putting off things like repairs. Kavanagh said there is some sentiment to allowing school boards to use the new “teacher pay’’ money to backfill those repair accounts.

One option, Kavanagh said, would be to give school boards more leeway – but only after a public vote, what he called “kind of a shaming.’’

And then there’s the question of whether the dollars for teacher pay have to be divided up evenly. Kavanagh said some districts might want to use the lion’s share of their dollars to sharply bump up the salaries of new teachers.

While there may be enough GOP votes for the package, none of this is likely to satisfy members of the #RedForEd movement who drew more than 50,000 supporters to rally at the Capitol on the first day of the strike.

Joe Thomas, president of the Arizona Education Association, pointed out that supporters that the plan provides for a pay hike solely for classroom teachers.

Left out are support staff like counselors, custodians, bus drivers and teaching aides.

“The governor thinks he’s going to buy enough of you off that you’ll shut up and go back to the classroom,’’ he said. And Thomas said nothing the governor is offering deal with other demands, like restoring the cuts that have been made in state funding to education that currently leaves per-student funding in Arizona below where it was a decade ago, even before inflation is taken into account.

The governor has countered that his plan also would restore $371 million in school district assistance during the next five years, money that was denied during the recession. Ducey said these dollars do not have a lot of strings, giving school officials sufficient latitude to provide raises

for those who are not teachers.

What’s also missing, Thomas said, is a demand by educators to restore student funding to where it was a decade ago.

And then there’s the fact that Ducey believes the cost of the package can be financed through economic growth, with no new taxes.

In that last point, the educators find themselves in agreement with Ducey’s predecessor.

“They need a permanent funding source moving forward,’’ said former Gov. Jan Brewer, calling the idea of financing the $1 billion package with future tax collections and cost savings “just pie in the sky.’’

Lack of revenues aside, Brewer said Ducey stumbled in rolling out a hastily crafted plan which actually has yet to be reduced to an actual written proposal.

Instead, Ducey went from defending his original plan for a 1 percent pay hike on April 11 to unveiling and promoting this three-step 19 percent plan just two days later, all without actual legislation.

“They should have had a bill,’’ Brewer said. More to the point, she said, any proposal needs to be credible, something the governor and his aides can “explain to the public.’’

While Republicans may be ready to vote for a plan, Sen. Steve Farley, D-Tucson, warned colleagues of a potentially unintended effect if lawmakers approve the additional dollars that the governor wants.

He pointed out that voters in 2016 ap-

proved Proposition 123. It will add $3.5 billion in aid to schools between now and 2025 after the Arizona Supreme Court ruled the state had not met meet its constitutional obligation to increase state aid annually to keep pace with inflation.

But that measure contains a poison pill of sorts: It put a provision in the Arizona Constitution to say that, beginning in 2024, lawmakers would no longer have to finance future inflation increases if K-12 funding exceeds 49 percent of the entire state budget.

Farley said an analysis of Ducey’s plan by legislative budget staffers show that by the 2020-2021 school year aid to education will hit 48.6 percent. But he said the provision would be triggered if lawmakers approve future tax cuts that trim overall state spending.

The solution, said Farley, is that outside, dedicated revenue source to keep overall spending on state government high enough not to trigger the cut in education funding.

Senate President Steve Yarbrough dismissed that claim as “disingenuous.’’

He said the state is bringing in more dollars.

And Yarbrough pointed out that the governor on Wednesday signed legislation to increase the vehicle license fee, a move he said could free up more than $100 million for state needs.

When a child has cancer, Chandler family helps

P

atti Luttrell’s son Jeff was just 12 when he needed a bone marrow transplant.

It was the latest attempt to save his life after fighting cancer for several years.

Despite the tremendous strain the East Valley family faced, they knew the issue was bigger than them.

They wanted to help other people in their situation.

Luttrell, co-founder and executive director of the Chandler-based Children’s Cancer Network, recalled how a little girl in the hospital room next to Jeff’s died of cancer.

The girl’s family did not have money to put gas in their car for the trip home after her passing.

Jeff’s sister, Jenny, 15 at the time, said, “That’s not fair. We’re gonna make a difference.” She suggested that their family organize a fundraising fashion show where child-cancer survivors could shine as the models.

“It was her idea to get the whole thing started,” Luttrell said. “Cancer does not

The show’s success prompted the Luttrells to start the Children’s Cancer Network in 2004.

The nonprofit organization provides financial help to families affected by cancer, promotes education about can-

cer-related topics and offers many activities to help boost the self-esteem of child cancer patients and their siblings.

“We build programs based on what the parents say is needed,” Luttrell said.

“We talk to our hospital partners. We fill the gaps. We take the middle ground.”

The organization began in the Lut-

trells’ home and was made up of volunteers for about the first 10 or 12 years, Luttrell said.

Now, Luttrell works for the organization full time after leaving her position as a pediatric nursing professor at Grand Canyon University.

Today, the Children’s Cancer Network has its own office, about 350 to 400 volunteers and four part-time staffers.

Children’s Cancer Network has a 13-member board of directors, of which Patti’s husband, Steve, is president as well as co-founder.

Their daughter, Jenny Lane DeAugustinis, who spearheaded the original fashion show, is also on the board. At 29, Jeff is cancer-free and a graphic designer who does illustrations for the cancer network.

The Children’s Cancer Network serves 750 families a year throughout the state and has donated about $4.5 million in programs and services to families over the last 14 years.

Judging by the size of the campus it’s building in east Mesa, Legacy officials apparently believe the demand is pretty high.

families impacted by cancer.

The nonprofit organization also expanded its office space by about 2,000 square feet several months ago. The additional area includes a room painted pink (decorated by the East Valley Women’s League) where cancer survivors and their families will be able to get makeovers and wigs.

Earlier this year, a therapist at Phoenix Children’s Hospital who counsels cancer survivors and their families went from working part time to full time with funding from a grant. Families do not have to pay for the counseling.

Patti understands the importance of finding the right person to talk to when going through the trauma of a family member suffering from cancer. Her family’s experience with cancer began in 1993, when Jeff was 5 years old and in kindergarten.

Jeff had not been feeling well and a pediatrician discovered his platelets were dropping over time with no explanation for the changes. He was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, said Patti, who at the time was a pediatric ICU nurse at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

“That was a really scary night,” Patti said. “So many things go through (your) mind of what will happen, just a lot of concern on many, many levels.”

Jeff endured chemotherapy and radiation, but the leukemia was “difficult to treat and it kept coming back,” she said.

Jeff was always optimistic. “He would always tell us, ‘It’s OK, we got this,’” Patti said.

He missed all of seventh grade because of his bone marrow transplant but recovered and went on to graduate from Corona del Sol High School before starting at Arizona State University.

His health seemed stable, but shortly before he turned 21, Jeff was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer of the tongue in 2009 and was treated with surgery and radiation. But the cancer returned in 2013 and he underwent many surgeries to try to remove it.

A little over a year ago, it returned, this time on the floor of his mouth. He had surgery to replace his jaw and chin.

The medical officials utilized his shoulder blade to form his new jaw and chin.

He has been cancer-free for 15 months, Patti said.

“It’s been a life-changing surgery for him,” she said. “He’s been cancer-free for a little over a year.”

Jeff also has earned a bachelor’s degree in graphic design from the Art Institute of Phoenix.

“He’s never given up hope throughout all of this,” Patti said. “The first thing he said to us is, ‘There has to be hope.’ He’s playing golf. We’re traveling. He still has good days and bad days.”

Like his other family members, Jeff uses his trials to help others. Though he likes to stay behind the scenes, he encourages cancer survivors and their families.

“He’s a very quiet guy, optimistic,” Patti said. “Life is good and he’s grateful for all that he has. I’ve seen him reach out to other family members and try to provide that help.”

Like Jeff, Patti keeps an optimistic outlook, saying she loves to help other people going through scary times as their family members deal with cancer.

She said she has a “passion for taking a world that is not fair and working together.”

Brenda Vanderbur of Chandler, a volunteer for the Children’s Cancer Network, understands how unfair life can be. Her son, Ridge, died three years ago at age 18 while he a student at Corona del Sol. He had suffered from leukemia and

died of heart failure caused by a complication due to more than eight months of treatment for the cancer.

Brenda said she and her family have “an amazing support system” in the Children’s Cancer Network.

“I want to make a difference because I know what it’s like,” she said. “It’s a hard road and I see these families and I get it. Here we are, still part of the family.

We’re still part of the CCN.” Gretchen Baumgardner of Phoenix also said the Children’s Cancer Network has been a tremendous source of support for her and her family. Her daughter, Olivia, who is now 10, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia when she was 3 years old.

“Patti’s just amazing,” Baumgardner said. “She does so much. It’s great sometimes to get out of your own bubble, not to think about your own stuff.”

“She has created that world where we can focus on a lot of good,” Baumgardner added. “She’s just one of the most positive people and just a ray of light.

She’s very selfless, almost to a fault.

They’re just a wonderful, wonderful family.”

The 89,577-square-foot campus sits on eight acres at 10707 E. Guadalupe Road, and will sport 47 classrooms, a computer lab, library, full-size gymnasium with wood floors, full-service commercial kitchen and cafeteria, athletic fields for baseball, soccer and football, outdoor basketball courts and playgrounds separated according to grade level.

Aimed at drawing families from east Mesa and Gilbert, it will be Legacy’s 14th school in Arizona and its fifth in the East Valley.

“The 2018-19 school year will be here before we know it, and we’re excited to begin welcoming our inaugural group of students at Legacy Traditional’s brandnew east Mesa campus,” said Aaron Hale, co-founder and executive director of Legacy Traditional Schools.

Though it may seem large, the school reflects Legacy’s experience with parents.

“With Legacy’s structured environment, 1,200 is an average-size capacity campus for Legacy,” Benson said.

With a student-teacher ratio averaging

around 30:1, it stresses a “back-to-basics curriculum, accelerated pace of studies, and high expectations for academic achievement, behavior and dress code.”

The school stresses its requirements for “a firm commitment from every parent, student and teacher” in achieving its goals and offers “direct teacher instruction blended with technology” in a “civilized, tolerant and peaceful school culture.”

And it boasts a K-8 curriculum that “is taught using whole group, uninterrupted, teacher-led direct instruction.”

The school also will offer a variety of electives for seventh and eighth-grade students, including a wide assortment of music instruction from singing and guitar to piano and media technology, two- and three-dimensional art classes and theater.

Mesa Police cyberdetective’s job inspires a business

Web. And he still works as a cyberdetective for the Mesa Police Department, crime prevention also has become the basis for a business he runs with his wife, Shenta, called Online Safety Specialists.

As a certified forensic computer examiner for Mesa Police, Pietrzak uses his technical skills in two ways.

His day job involves extracting data from computers and other digital devices that can be used as evidence in the prosecution of crime, online or not.

But he also is assigned to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, whose members “investigate crimes such as child pornography, sextortion, cyberbullying, sexual exploitation of a minor and child luring.”

Now, as president of his three-monthold business, he gives presentations to groups and even families in their homes about the criminals he uncovers and the damage he has seen them do.

“I educate not just kids, but also parents on the risks of chatting online, whether it be through their phones or through online gaming. My presentation is geared toward junior high school and above, but the online gaming portion could also be taught to elementary school kids,” Scott explained.

“One of the most important components of the presentation is educating the parents. Most parents are clueless when it comes to what their kids are doing online, so I show them what to look for, not just online, but also with their kids. I try to make the presentation very interactive with a few quizzes and lecture, and I encourage questions throughout the presentation.”

Lawmakers curbing local regulation of home-based businesses

tate lawmakers are trimming the ability of cities and counties to keep people from running businesses out of their homes.

On a 32-25 margin Monday, the House approved legislation that carves out an exception to existing local ordinances spelling out where individuals can – and cannot – sell products and services in residential areas.

To get an exemption from local rules, a business would have to be operated by the homeowner and anyone else in the immediate family, with no more than two employees who do not live there.

SB 1387 also says there cannot be more than one client on the premises at any

one time. And the business would have to generate no on-street parking or any substantial increase in traffic through residential areas.

Rep. Jeff Weninger, R-Chandler, said the legislation is based on complaints by some people that their efforts to operate something as simple as an accounting service are being thwarted by unfair and burdensome local regulations.

“What about the freedom to start your own business and break through on your own and not have to depend on somebody else to give you that break or give you that leg up?’’ he asked.

Weninger said it’s matter of practicality.

He said someone who might want to start his or her own firm does not want to take the risk of signing a lease of three years or more for commercial space at

$2,000 a month. Those leases, Weninger said, usually require a personal guarantee.

And if the business falters after the first year?

“You’re going to owe that landlord $24,000,’’ he said, with the landlord obtaining a judgment on the former tenant.

“Your credit’s going to be wrecked,’’ Weninger said. He said allowing someone to start and run a business at home is “giving these people who are poor, undercapitalized, a chance at the American dream.’’

Weninger said the measure still leaves cities with some authority to use zoning laws to govern what can and cannot occur in someone’s home. And nothing in the legislation trumps rules of homeowner associations that can have their own limits on business.

But some other legislators were skeptical of overriding local rules.

“This takes away a tool a city might have that helps me as a homeowner,’’ said Rep. Kelli Butler, D-Paradise Valley. “We want people to have the freedom to start their own businesses, but not at the expense of their neighbor.’’

Rep. Ken Clark, D-Phoenix, agreed.

He said lawmakers may find they have opened the state to litigation from neighbors who say that a new, unregulated home-based business has reduced their property values.

And Rep. Kirsten Engel, D-Tucson, said she feared the measure, as approved, still allows for more than minimal business operations out of someone’s home.

“It used to be when I was a kid, Catholic families were really big,’’ he said. “I don’t want to get into the business of

“I am giving these presentations either after work, or on the weekends. I am willing to work with anyone’s schedule,” he said.

Pietrzak said the most vulnerable people are girls between 12 and 17 years of age, although boys are not immune to the dangers on the internet.

Even if you have a rock-hard password and state-of-the-art security software, he warned, “There’s always the risk of being hacked.”

“Using an unsecured Wi-Fi is a great way to have your accounts hacked. Also, using the Dark Web makes you very vulnerable and is a great way to be hacked,” he said.

Pietrzak said the habits that make users the most vulnerable are “chatting with a stranger, sending nude images of yourself, using your real name for gaming or chat apps, not monitoring what your kids are doing online and giving out too much personal information.”

As for the best ways to protect yourself, well, that’s what Pietrzak’s business is all about.

“We are fairly new, but everyone has had a story to tell, which is what makes this presentation so rewarding,” he said.

“It has really opened up a dialogue between the kids and their parents.”

He recalled how his and his wife’s best friends were driving home from one of his presentations when he told his mother a stranger had been inviting him to go onto a chat app – something she had

been unaware of.

“When they got home, she texted me and told me that her son revealed he had been invited to go onto WhatsApp (a chat app) and FaceTime with people he didn’t know,” he said.

Like any new business owner, Pietzcak “there have been some sleepless nights.”

“The biggest challenge is getting the word out about what we have to offer and what makes us unique, compared to other businesses that are similar,” he said.

And there’s the challenge of “keeping the presentation current and relative.”

On that, Pietrzak offers a sobering revelation: “Unfortunately, because these issues are a huge problem not just in Arizona, but also in the U.S., updating the presentation is not as challenging as it should be.”

based businesses, if not subject to onerous regulations, can eventually grow to be successful. One of those, he said, is Apple, started by Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs in a garage.

As it turns out, though, that may be more myth than reality.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Wozniak said there was no actual designing of computers in the garage.

“We would drive the finished products

to the garage, make them work, and then we’d drive them down to the store that paid us cash,’’ he said.

“There were hardly ever more than two people in the garage,’’ Wozniak continued. “Mostly they were sitting around kind of doing nothing productive.’’

But Rep. Randall Friese, D-Tucson, said that whatever led to Apple and its ultimate success did not require the kind of legislation approved by the House.

An honorable man reflects on the absence of honor

A

ll around us, coarseness and self-interest fill every available nook, every last cranny.

You see it in our politics and on the news channels, in Hollywood, on Twitter and Facebook, and in our capitols, federal and state. In a nation where vanity and selfishness are twin kings, a question arises: Is honor dead in America today?

This is the question I posed recently to the most honorable public servant I’ve ever known.

When I met Rick Romley in 1995, he was in the midst of a 16-year-run serving as Maricopa County Attorney. Romley was the prosecutor who took down our Legislature’s AzScam criminals, the law enforcer who toppled the Phoenix Bishop Thomas O’Brien over a sex abuse coverup and a hit-and-run vehicular killing.

Long before he ever saw a courtroom, however, Romley served this country as a Marine squad leader in Vietnam. There in the jungle, on an April day in 1969, 19-year-old Romley lost his legs above the knee to an enemy land mine.

When I think of honor, I think of this upright Marine, 69 now, moving proficiently with his cane, heading to his next case as a judge pro tem – his next act of service for his fellow military veterans.

“It just seems like character, integrity – those fundamental things you always expect in your leadership in our country – don’t play the role they used to,” says Romley. “Every time I see something, it just drives me nuts. It drives me nuts.”

Romley says he noticed the value we place on honor begin to recede a decade ago. I agree.

That was when the screamers began to scream so loud and with such partisan fervor, the sensible rest of us first turned down the volume, then completely tuned

out. If narcissism and “me first, screw you” invaded our politics, that only makes sense: By then, these cancers had invaded our entertainment and, with the advent of social media, everyday life.

In a world where no one is more important than me, how can honor – the value of serving a cause greater than the self – ever find a toehold?

“The way you hold yourself, that honor you believe in, it instills in people such strength,” says Romley. “The ability to give back more than you’re getting … that makes you an incredibly strong person.”

Honor always looms largest in situations where a steep price must be paid and where payment is inevitable.

Romley faced such a moment in 2010.

He had been appointed interim County Attorney, to serve out the term of the disgraced Andrew Thomas. Meanwhile, Romley also was running to keep the job.

Along came Senate Bill 1070, an alleged solution to illegal immigration

that Romley opposed as an unconstitutional overreach and a nasty form of racial profiling destined to divide the state and to fail.

In a Republican primary, opposing SB 1070 meant certain political death.

Romley opposed it anyway. And he got crushed by Bill Montgomery – with an assist from Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

The courts ultimately sided with Romley on 1070. Regardless, he still carries the label RINO – Republican in Name Only. Not that he cares a whit.

“Quite frankly, yeah, we sometimes listen a little too much to the bitchers of the world,” says Romley. “There’s still a lot of good people out there, a lot of honorable people. That’s why I guess I just have confidence still. It’s going to turn. I see it – how sick people are getting of where we are today, of how everything is a fight.”

“I’m optimistic,” says the most honorable man left standing, “but I am frustrated as hell.”

Epstein devoted countless hours to teen suicide issue

he article “Suicide Prevention Now Part of State’s School Safety Debate” totally omitted a huge and dynamic reason the state Legislature is even aware of the teen suicide crisis, now 25 teen deaths by suicide since the beginning of the school year in the East Valley alone.

While I recognize the article was addressing Gov. Ducey’s plan, essential parts were left out and credit given incorrectly.

It should be clearly recognized the primary legislative members making it their personal mission to change the trajectory of our vulnerable youth regarding suicide are Sen. Sean Bowie and Rep. Mitzi Epstein Epstein has been devoting countless hours to researching and finding solutions to the teen suicide crisis and was somehow missing from the article. Rep. Epstein is the reason this Arizona legislature is even considering a state suicide prevention coordinator.

I’m not certain how Representatives Norgaard and Weninger’s names were associated with this. They were not instrumental in any part of it.

Rep. Epstein masterminded the revival of the state coordinator when it was clear that the Legislature did not want to support “mandating” training for teachers on signs of suicide ideation. The Wrangler re- ported this accurately in its April 6, 2018, issue when it spoke of HB2593.

I must also point out, because Rep. Epstein listened many, many months ago, she initiated a neighborhood council of counselors, teachers, parents and community members who are effectively working on many aspects of teen suicide – especially prevention, intervention and postvention protocol in schools and is bringing much awareness to the whole child regarding social and emotional wellness.

She continues to meet with us monthly.

And Sen. Bowie has been working with our small group of parents (Parents for Suicide Prevention) for quite some time.

It was the death of Mitch Warnock, a student at Corona High School, that insti-

gated the formation of our group.

When we recognized many of our teachers had a complete unawareness of the initial signs of suicide and there was no real district-wide protocol publicized or enacted, we knew we had to do something.

Perhaps naively, we thought asking the legislature for two hours of suicide prevention training as an aid to teachers who are on the frontline with our kids everyday was a no-brainer. Who would argue with that?

But, the Legislature has continually resisted both Bowie and Epstein’s requests on our behalf. Rep. Norgaard even passed up the opportunity to co-sponsor the bill Sen. Bowie crafted in Mitch Warnock’s name (SB1391). I’m not sure why. If it was about money and she had listened to us then, she would have known Arizona has many free resources for suicide prevention training and could replace teacher training on less-relevant subjects.

Also, early in the process, two committees were slotted, rather than one, to hear SB1391, a tactic used to slow down, ignore or overlook a bill if it’s not pop- ular with the majority in the state house. They

can do that here in AZ and Sen. Nancy Barto refused to hear it.

So, Sen. Bowie proposed “The Mitch Warnock Act” be inserted into Gov. Ducey’s school safety plan – a plan I hope is under much scrutiny by all Arizona voters because it has a long way to go.

As I write this, Bowie is still valiantly attempting to work with a resistant congress who is stymied by a “mandate,” although they have no problem mandating other issues within the schools or women’s health, for that matter.

If they neuter the verbiage of “The Mitch Warnock Act,” it will be a disgrace to the memory of Mitch and to any child who is contemplating ending his pain by taking his own life.

Again, we’ve lost 25 teens to suicide in the East Valley alone since school started. So, it’s appalling to me that while so many members of our Republican congress profess to be “pro-life,” they would evade, naysay, thwart or play games with any solutions, while our teens, living and breathing, and thinking about dying, could be in their last hour of life.

East Valley sports seasons to continue despite walkout – so far

H

igh school varsity sports programs in the East Valley soon could feel the impact of the teachers’ walkout if it becomes a prolonged affair.

Despite the statewide walkout, all sports seasons can continue – but school districts can choose to suspend activities if desired.

Arizona Interscholastic Association sports information coordinator Seth Polansky said all state tournaments will go on as scheduled. It’s up to the school districts to decide how to approach those competitions.

“That is a school/school district decision in all cases. The association is going forward with the postseason as planned,” Polansky said.

The reason behind continuing the spring seasons seems to be the financial investments already in place. For example, the upcoming state baseball tournament will be held at various MLB spring training sites across the Valley and reservations were made months ago.

Playoffs already have begun for several spring sports, including baseball, softball, tennis and beach volleyball.

Gilbert Public Schools has committed to playing in state tournaments, while the Chandler Unified School District stopped just short of saying the same. In an email sent to all parents, the CUSD promised to evaluate future participation in sporting events during school closures.

Mesa District Athletic Director Steve Hogen stated, “We will participate in the state playoffs. Lower levels will be can-

celled if there are any still to be played.”

The school districts’ decisions have resulted in differing opinions across the Valley sports scene.

“The thing I’m most sad about is the fact that kids are being affected this much on and off the court,” said Mesquite High School volleyball coach Ryan Olsen. “As a See

S’no joke, Austin Parent unfazed by wintry spring

P

erhaps former Highland High School baseball star Austin Parent is on his way to becoming a snowbird.

After all, the Gilbert native is enjoying the best season of his career all the way up in the bitter northeast.

Parent is currently a junior on the University of Pitt-Bradford baseball team.

And while the winter weather lingers deep into the spring, it hasn’t stopped Parent from putting up big numbers at the plate.

“I’ve said all along that I actually enjoy the snow and the cold,” Parent said of making the transition from Arizona to Bradford, Pennsylvania.

“My freshman year here was probably the biggest shock, but since then I’ve gotten used to it. It is weird playing games with snow in mid-April. This is probably the worst winter they have had in program history.”

The treacherous weather has not slowed him down at all. In fact, the catcher is thriving in it.

Former Highland High baseball player is racking up big plays at a Pennsylvania campus despite miserable winter weather that won’t go away.

III Player of the Week award. He earned the honor after hitting five home runs and 14 RBIs in just five games. For Parent, his big week was simply the result of endless preparation.

“I put in a lot of hard work this past summer in the weight room and the cage,” he said. “I just tried to figure out who I am as a hitter. I used to be one of those guys

who just swings as hard as he can. This past week, I just really calmed down and let my ability come to fruition.”

Parent’s best stretch of baseball culminated in a memorable doubleheader performance. On April 14, Parent connected on three homers, including a grand slam against Pitt-Greensburg.

When asked if he had ever experienced

a high like that on the diamond, he joked, “Just in batting practice!”

“That one game was probably the craziest thing I’ve ever done,” Parent added.

“The last time I had hit a grand slam was in Little League. That whole doubleheader, I just kind of blacked out. That’s probably the best way I can describe it.”

Despite Parent’s fuzzy recollection of the whirlwind week, he has been more locked in than ever at the plate this season.

He currently leads the Panthers in every meaningful hitting category – batting average, home runs and RBIs. The budding star was quick to credit Highland High School’s coaching staff for his progression as a player.

“Every coach there instilled in me a good work ethic and determination. If you have a good year, you can’t just rest on your laurels,” said Parent, who graduated in 2015. “If you want to make it somewhere, you’ve got to keep pushing.”

A single moment came to his mind when recalling his four years on the Hawks.

coach, I teach my kids to put their head down and work, but now we have to cancel JV matches for this. They get no reward for their work.”

Hamilton High tennis coach Phil Gonzales thinks finishing out the campaigns is the right thing to do.

“Who knows what changes are coming, but the kids worked so hard and I don’t think we should take the playoffs away from them,” he said.

But coaches’ school colleagues may eventually steer them away from play.

It is possible coaches will be asked to step away from their teams during a prolonged strike in a sign of solidarity – especially since many varsity coaches are also teachers.

That predicament certainly applies to Cody Brassfield, Desert Vista High School’s varsity baseball coach and a chemical physics teacher.

When questioned about the possibility of being asked to abandon his team, Brassfield responded, “I’m not excited about that. I’ll talk to the A.D. to see what we can do to make sure that doesn’t happen.

willing to sacrifice what I’m doing in the classroom and all the baseball stuff.”

Meanwhile, the players are cognizant of how the walkout could impact their seasons as well.

But so far, they have been able to separate the issues on and off the field.

“It really hasn’t been a distraction for my players,” Desert Ridge High School baseball coach Joe Bergen said. “They know that it could or could not happen, but it’s been business as usual for them.”

For now, players, coaches and teachers appear to be on the same page during this turbulent time.

“I don’t see this as a difficult situation,” said Gilbert High baseball coach Matt Gutierrez. “I think the districts have done a good job of relieving some of the tension that might exist amongst teachers with differing opinions on the walkout.”

“My junior year, we were playing Mesquite. The pitcher we were facing was having a really good game,” he said. “I looked at one of my teammates and said, five bucks says he’s going to throw me a fastball first pitch and I’m going to hit it hard somewhere. That was exactly what he did and I ended up hitting a walk-off home run.”

To put it simply, Parent called his shot.

And that shot was just the first of many memorable home runs to come during Parent’s time playing ball at the high school and collegiate levels.

With Pitt-Bradford currently in the postseason hunt, he is focused solely on winning games this season. But as his college days wind down, he can’t help but wonder about his next chapter in the game.

“I would love to continue playing,” he said. “It’s been a dream of mine since I was two years old. Whether it’s at the pro level or semi-pro level, I couldn’t care less as long as I’m playing baseball.”

‘Sand-to-table’ Mexican restaurant opening downtown

A

longtime restaurateur and a seasoned chef have teamed up to transport diners to a culinary Mexican oasis with “sand-to-table” seafood, flavorful chiles and fruit-filled cocktails in a new downtown Chandler eatery.

Julian Wright, owner of Pedal Haus Brewery on South Mill Avenue in Tempe, plans to open Las Palmas Cantina at 95 W. Boston St., next month in what used to be Vintage 95.

Hoping to give visitors the feel of sandy beaches and warm breezes, he has teamed up with Michael O’Dowd, who will be the head chef.

O’Dowd, a chef for more than 30 years, worked for more than 10 years as executive chef for the Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass. There, he planned the menus for Kai, a AAA Five Diamond/Forbes Five Star restaurant, and other dining options at the resort.

An avid fisherman, he had also worked as executive chef at L’Auberge de Sedona for more than a year. After taking annual trips to Mexican beach towns like Playa del Carmen and Tulum, Wright decided to bring the cultural and lifestyle elements of that tropical region to his next restaurant.

O’Dowd said Las Palmas will offer “Yucatáninspired cuisine with an emphasis on coastal dishes.” “We’ll be kind of recreating some of the dishes you might find in that tropical area of Mexico,” Wright said. “That whole region from Costa Rica to St. Thomas is all sort of tropical. You’ve got tropical fruits and veggies. We’ll be representing coastal, southern Mexico in our dishes, which includes a lot of seafood, lighter food.”

O’Dowd said the dishes will include snapper, triggerfish, corvine and white fish, as well as at least three to four varieties of ceviche – a dish that typically includes raw fish and seafood combined with vinegar or citrus juices from limes and lemons.

Among them is a “Bloody Mary-style” ceviche with a tomato, horseradish root, avocado and grilled shrimp, he said.

“It’s not your typical Mexican restaurant, where it’s really based on a lot of heavy beans and rice,” O’Dowd said. “You’ll have coconuts, mangoes, papaya and lime and fresh seafood from the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean area.

be a little bit lighter and driven more (by) tropical flavor profiles but yet still have chiles. I’m still able to bring in accents from around the world. It’s almost like Yucatáninspired cuisine with global accents.”

O’Dowd said he enjoys using his kitchen for a kind of cultural exchange.

“What I like to do is find out about different cultures and learn about what people ate and bring a twist to the past and bring some uniqueness to the future,” he said.

O’Dowd, who was still in the test kitchen working on the menu recently, said he might use curries from India and mix them with coconut to create a coconut soup or sauce.

He plans to spice up meals with guajillo, Ají Amarillo, pasilla and other Mexican chiles.

“I haven’t really seen anyone in Arizona exploring this type of cuisine or region,” O’Dowd said. “Being able to learn about the culture and history of the Mayans and create a way to pay homage to the past while creating new ideas, dishes and flavors is what I thrive on.”

The menu will have many dishes that can be shared as well as street-style bites.

A “shaken greens” salad with spicy jerk chicken, sweet corn, local goat cheese and date jam will be offered at Las Palmas. Cochinita pibil or slow-cooked pork, likely paired with dirty rice, will be one of the

heartier meats on the menu.

O’Dowd said Las Palmas will also have a “spin on tacos or just tacos itself” with fresh tortillas made in-house. The new restaurant also will offer its own version of “street corn nachos” at the bar with corn, cheese and queso fresco.

O’Dowd said he has worked “all over,” including at the now-closed Marquesa at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, as well as at the Stanhope Hotel in New York City and The Jefferson Hotel in Washington, D.C. He is excited to set up shop in Chandler.

“What I like about it is that I think it’s still a little bit untouched and there’s a lot of curiosity and foodies overall, foodies in Chandler,” O’Dowd said.

“I love to see what’s going on with the build-out, the city’s plan for Chandler,” the Scottsdale resident said.

“People are becoming more and more foodies and enjoying dinner outside. We want to give them that opportunity to have fun and relax, really build a culture around a thriving sort of interesting food scene in Chandler.”

Wright said when he was considering a location for the restaurant, “I was looking for an area that basically wasn’t overdeveloped.”

“I like areas that have an urban feel and some kind of synergy with other businesses,”

Wright said. “I just knew a bunch of folks down here. That, and I really like the building.

“I’m looking forward to being a part of downtown Chandler and to bringing one of my favorite regions of the world to this community. I love that Chandler is still very independent. Everyone is still very much your neighbor.”

The restaurant’s 5,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space will include two bars, two patios and an eclectic elevated deck area designed to look like beach-side cafes. Garage-style doors added to the front and back of the building will allow diners to see Boston Street clear through to the elevated back patio. Wright said the indoor area will have a “bit more high-energy and kind of hip” feel to it while the back patio will be “very casual and laidback.”

The idea is customers who want a more relaxed vibe while they wear shorts and flipflops can hang out on the back deck while those who want to dress up might prefer dining inside, he added.

Wright, who has been in the restaurant business since the 1990s, opened his first restaurant, Jax Thai Bar, in Tempe in 2000. He has owned several other restaurants in the Valley including La Bocca Urban Kitchen + Wine Bar in Tempe and North Phoenix and Canteen Modern Tequila Bar, formerly in Tempe.

Folks visiting Las Palmas will be able to try specialty tropical cocktails and craft-brewed Mexican-style beers made specifically for the restaurant. The drinks will have a heavy emphasis on tequila, mezcal and rum.

Barb Harris of Tempe is eager to try Las Palmas because she has “eaten at all of Julian’s restaurants.” The public relations consultant and her husband, Scott, are regulars at Pedal Haus Brewery.

“I’m really excited about it,” Harris said. “(Julian) and I had been talking about it for a while. I’m excited about it because that’s really that type of food is something my husband and I love, the creative, the street tacos; the food out of Oaxaca.

“It just looks like its going to be such a great vibe. I’m really excited about Michael O’Dowd being the chef. We’re kind of beach people. We go down to Puerto Peñasco all the time.”

Jake’s in Mesa adds an adults-only evening

A

rizona native Ryan Cockerham is shaking things up at Jake’s Unlimited in Mesa with its new adults-only evenings, Jake’s After Dark.

The lead mixologist and bar manager, Cockerham has been with the company since he was 16. When Amazing Jake’s was transitioning into Jake’s Unlimited, Cockerham was asked to oversee the upgrade to two full bars.

Cockerham was interested in fire science and even earned his EMT certification. He sees a future in the medical field, but for now he’s loving his Jake’s Unlimited position and wants to “ride with it” for as long as he can.

How was Jake’s After Dark born?

With the remodeling, they were trying to stay with the Jake’s brand. To show people that, “Yes, we can still do birthday parties and are a great place for kids and family entertainment, but at the same time, we can still do adults as well.”

We upgraded to two full bars and, starting at 8 p.m., we no longer have an admission fee. So, if people want to come in for

date night or grab a drink and go bowling, it’s something for the adults to do.

What’s the oddest drink request you’ve received?

With me being fairly new to this, anything with a weird name. I remember the first time that somebody came up and said, “Can I get a Salty Dog?” and I’m thinking, “What the heck?” But honestly, anything with a weird name that doesn’t tell you what’s in the drink.

No. 1 pet peeve when working?

When it’s a Saturday and you are running around the bar and people can tell that you are busy doing something but there is that one person saying, “Excuse me, excuse me” and they just kind of repeat it.

What is your go-to drink when off the job?

When I turned 21 and was able to go out with friends, I liked a drink called Liquid Marijuana, which we have on our cocktail menu.

We changed it to Fuel Cell, going with our gamer theme. I would probably do a vodka press with lemon and lime, something super-simple, nothing too sugary.

What does ordering a vodka tonic say about a person?

They know what they want. It’s something plain and simple. They are easy to impress, in a way. They aren’t too high-maintenance.

Tell us about the cocktail program at Jake’s.

When we were doing the renovation, the manager and I were working together to come up with names for new drinks. Adults are bringing their children there and it’s for the children to have fun, but the adults can have something and it can have a theme.

So, with us, we do birthday parties so we will have a pineapple upside-down cake shot. We try and make it tie into each other as much as we can.

What is cocktail do you like this month?

The Cotton Candy Martini. We make all of our cotton candy in house, so it’s made fresh every day. In fact, it’s more of a presentation drink. You prepare the martini glass with a generous amount of cotton candy and mix all of the ingredients in a shaker and when you pour it over it, it melts the cotton candy. It’s a really cool idea.

Chandler Children’s Choir to mark 10 years with concert

he Chandler Children’s Choir will close out its 10th anniversary season with a concert featuring a newly commissioned song, a special alumni appearance and messages of hope and inspiration.

“Let Me Fly” will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at Chandler Center for the Arts, 250 N. Arizona Ave. in Chandler. Tickets are $15 for general seating and $20 for preferred seating.

“The theme ‘Let Me Fly’ echoes the mission statement of the Chandler Children’s Choir, about building the foundations of character and musicianship in young people so they can utilize those skills to soar in life,” said Aimee Stewart, the choir’s co-founder and artistic director.

“Madison has learned countless songs, some in different languages, performed in countless concerts and performances, made numerous friends who are all creative and likeminded, and has been taught by such talented and caring directors,” Ibarra said.

The program has grown her daughter’s confidence and respect for the performing arts, but also enriched the family, she said “Every year we leave the concerts saying ‘This was the best one yet’ and we always look forward to seeing what the new season of CCC will bring,” Ibarra said.
