Mesa land auction rekindles a stormy past BY JIM WALSH Tribune Staff Writer

A

tranquil desert wash meanders through a 132-acre property Mesa owns at Thomas and Recker roads where a pleasant walk on an undulating trail offers a close-up view of several saguaros as Red Mountain looms on the horizon. But behind this rare, expansive, beautiful property is a stormy history that includes two failed attempts to build housing and one failed attempt to build a park, fears of industrial development near toney Red Mountain Ranch, and a development company’s attempt to influence an election. On Thursday, the city will put up for auction that huge parcel – adding a new chapter to that stormy history. Critics question why there were no public hearings before the Mesa City Council decided to auction it after the city paid $4 million in 1998 and reserved it for a regional park. They also question whether the lure of a bid of $15 million or more is motivating Mesa to reopen a pandora’s box that seemingly was sealed 20 years ago.

This undulating, pristine piece of desert at Recker and Thomas roads in Mesa is about to be put on the auction block for developers who might see the 132-acre parcel with its views of Red Mountain as a perfect site for homes. But the land, which the city purchased in the late 1990s for $4 million, also poses enough challenges with its topography and geological makeup that an appraiser dropped its estimated value by $10 million. Mesa voters rejected a park bond issue twice in 2000 that included building sports fields on the property. Outside of a city lift station not included in the auction,

it has remained vacant and pristine ever since.

feeling of isolation that summer recess often brings. “We know the time leading up to and after spring break can be especially stressful for teens,” said Michelle Moorhead, Teen Lifeline executive director. “Stressors can be anything from midterm exams to a break from friends which can leave teens feeling overwhelmed and alone.” The challenges can loom so large in the minds of many teens that Teen Hotline volunteers will be bracing for a 10 percent spike in calls from some boys and girls who are troubled at best and depressed and even suicidal at worst.

That spike this year also is occurring at a time when suicide prevention advocates fear that the State House may kill a bill that would require all school personnel who deal with sixth- through 12th-graders get training in recognizing suicidal individuals and how to respond to them. Against the backdrop of 38 teen suicides since July 2017 in the East Valley – mostly in Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa and Queen Creek – the bill won rare bipartisan support in the Senate earlier this month as it passed with the only

s most East Valley students return this week from spring break, they also are starting a troubling period that generates a noticeable spike in calls to the suicide prevention teen hotline, experts warn. Representatives of the Teen Lifeline last week issued a reminder for parents and other adults that the final eight weeks of the school year pose significant emotional challenges for many teens that range from upcoming performance exams to life after graduation to a
